  1. So please do ask if you need one. So let's jump in and just read Genesis 2, okay? Just Genesis 2. We'll skip a few verses, I'll tell you when. But Genesis 2. So open up your Bibles there. It's on page 2.

  2. Genesis 2. Let's start from verse 5.

  3. When no bush of the field was yet in the land, and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground, then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  4. And the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he put man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

  5. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  6. And then verse 15.

  7. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

  8. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,

  9. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

  10. Then the Lord God said,

  11. It is not good that the man should be alone.

  12. I will make him a helper fit for him.

  13. Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them.

  14. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

  15. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.

  16. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

  17. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man.

  18. And while he slept, took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.

  19. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man, he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

  20. Then the man said,

  21. This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

  22. She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.

  23. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh.

  24. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

  25. This is the word of God.

  26. Did you see, did you notice in what we just read, there was a wedding in that passage.

  27. So verse 22.

  28. God brings the woman to the man.

  29. The man delights in the woman.

  30. He says a poem.

  31. At last, bone of my bones.

  32. Then verse 24.

  33. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh.

  34. Do you recognize those words?

  35. We use those words at weddings, don't we?

  36. Paul Levy in the last wedding that was here.

  37. He said those words.

  38. And that's because what we have in front of us is a wedding.

  39. Jesus even quotes these words in Matthew 19 to talk about marriage.

  40. Okay.

  41. Jesus looks back at Genesis 2 and says, yeah, this is the wedding.

  42. This is the first wedding.

  43. Here in Genesis 2 in the garden was Adam and Eve's actual wedding day.

  44. If you want a soundtrack for this, you can put wedding bells over these last few verses.

  45. And so marriage, let's be clear on this.

  46. Marriage is not something we invented as society.

  47. No, marriage was there from the beginning.

  48. And this, like all we've been seeing, this is the blueprint for marriage.

  49. And it's tied to our calling as male and female.

  50. Man is to form and women is to fill in all of life.

  51. And they're to do this together.

  52. And this is most clearly seen in marriage.

  53. It's all of life, as we saw last week.

  54. But actually, it's most clearly seen in marriage.

  55. And so I want us to look at this marriage blueprint today.

  56. And I want us to see what marriage is all about.

  57. What it really means to be husband and wife.

  58. And our culture is confused about this, isn't it?

  59. Confused about men and women and the idea of marriage.

  60. And are there any roles in marriage?

  61. And so we need to look at this blueprint.

  62. And when we do, we see another difference and complementing between men and women.

  63. Between Adam and Eve, there was a difference in responsibility, in leadership, and in authority.

  64. And so I just want us to unpack those things.

  65. So let's just look at this blueprint.

  66. And the first thing we see is this.

  67. Adam had responsibility for Eve.

  68. This is sub-point A.

  69. Adam had responsibility for Eve.

  70. So, as we saw last week, Adam, and only Adam, was told to work and keep the garden, wasn't he?

  71. Look at verse 15.

  72. It was just told to Adam.

  73. That's his domain.

  74. That's his task.

  75. And the word keep there, it means protect and guard.

  76. So whatever is in the garden, he's the one to protect it, including Eve.

  77. Eve's in the garden, right?

  78. Eve was not called to protect, strictly speaking.

  79. Explicitly that that is Adam's calling.

  80. And that's what we see in the way Eve was made.

  81. She was taken from Adam's side.

  82. So I quoted Matthew Henry last week.

  83. He kind of sums up the imagery well.

  84. Eve was not taken out of Adam's head to top him, neither out of his feet to be trampled on by him,

  85. but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected by him,

  86. and near his heart to be loved by him.

  87. And all this is related to man being made first.

  88. Remember, Adam was made first, then Eve.

  89. He's there first to form and protect.

  90. And then Eve arrives, and then she is protected by Adam,

  91. and she's allowed to flourish and fill the garden.

  92. And this is the blueprint.

  93. God has designed man to have responsibility for woman,

  94. to protect her, to shield her.

  95. And that especially goes for marriage.

  96. A husband is to protect and sacrifice and physically guard, spiritually guard his wife.

  97. So if a burglar came into the garden, what should Adam do?

  98. He should go get his baseball bat, right?

  99. Or if Satan came into the garden, what should Adam do?

  100. Well, let's think about that next week, because Satan did come into the garden.

  101. But for now, just see that there is a special responsibility given to man.

  102. Adam had responsibility for Eve.

  103. That's the dynamic in the blueprint.

  104. But within this blueprint, there's another difference.

  105. It's point B.

  106. Adam had leadership over Eve.

  107. Adam had leadership over Eve.

  108. Now, I want you to look up some of these verses in your little discussion box.

  109. Answer these questions.

  110. And for now, we're just gathering data.

  111. Just answer these questions.

  112. It shouldn't take too long.

  113. I'll give you a minute or two.

  114. So break out into groups and answer these questions.

  115. Thank you.

  116. Thank you.

  117. Thank you.

  118. Thank you.

  119. Thank you.

  120. God gave a command.

  121. Who did he give it to?

  122. Zuko?

  123. Adam.

  124. Adam, right?

  125. It was just Adam formed.

  126. Adam got the command.

  127. All right.

  128. Who broke this command by eating?

  129. I don't know.

  130. Eve.

  131. Yeah.

  132. Was Eve the only one that ate?

  133. And then she gave some to Adam.

  134. Say again?

  135. Who was standing right there the whole time.

  136. Exactly.

  137. So both ate.

  138. Both broke this commandment.

  139. Okay?

  140. When the command was broken, who did God look for?

  141. Marius.

  142. Adam, right.

  143. Where are you?

  144. Adam.

  145. He comes straight for Adam.

  146. And now Romans 5.12.

  147. Who does the Bible say is responsible for the fall?

  148. Fernando.

  149. Adam.

  150. Right.

  151. Through one man came sin and death.

  152. Right?

  153. And so as we see this, there's an interesting dynamic between men and women.

  154. Yeah.

  155. God gives the command to Adam.

  156. He was the one responsible to lead his wife in godliness.

  157. To obey this command.

  158. And so Adam was given the command.

  159. And of course, that means Adam would have had to teach it to Eve.

  160. Right?

  161. It would have been passed down onto her from him.

  162. Because Eve knows of this command.

  163. She quotes it to Satan.

  164. But it was given to Adam directly.

  165. And both broke the command, didn't they?

  166. But both ate.

  167. Eve ate first.

  168. But when God comes down in judgment,

  169. who does he look for?

  170. He looks for Adam.

  171. And he addresses Adam.

  172. Adam is the one to go to.

  173. And so, who does Romans 5 say is responsible?

  174. It's Adam.

  175. Sin came into the world through one man, not one woman.

  176. And so, in this marriage dynamic,

  177. Adam and Eve are not identical.

  178. They're of the same worth and dignity.

  179. Absolutely.

  180. But there is a different function.

  181. Adam is in a leadership role.

  182. A representative role.

  183. He represents her and his household.

  184. And he has the responsibility and the leadership over the welfare of Eve.

  185. And not the other way around.

  186. Adam had leadership over Eve.

  187. Which is to say, Adam had authority over Eve.

  188. Adam had authority over Eve.

  189. This is a sub-point C.

  190. As with all leadership,

  191. there is a difference of authority.

  192. Now, we'll see this more as we open up the New Testament in a moment.

  193. But something in Genesis suggests that there is a difference of authority.

  194. Because, and this is key,

  195. Adam names Eve.

  196. Do you notice, in chapter 2, verse 19 and 20,

  197. Adam names the animals, doesn't he?

  198. And naming it is quite a significant act.

  199. You can't name something you don't have authority over.

  200. Well, Adam has authority over the animals,

  201. and so he names them.

  202. But also, he names Eve, doesn't he?

  203. So look at verse 23.

  204. What does Adam say?

  205. She shall be called woman.

  206. And at the end of chapter 3, in the fall,

  207. he says,

  208. the man called his wife's name Eve.

  209. He names her.

  210. In marriage,

  211. Adam has been given a particular responsibility,

  212. a particular leadership,

  213. and therefore a particular authority.

  214. He was to lead and protect

  215. and sacrifice for and represent his wife.

  216. And that does mean an authority.

  217. Now, authority,

  218. we don't like that word, do we?

  219. We often associate it

  220. with being domineering

  221. or crushing

  222. or even being abusive, don't we?

  223. But remember,

  224. that is bad use of authority.

  225. This, this is the blueprint.

  226. This is good authority.

  227. Just like Adam's protection over Eve

  228. is not a bad protection.

  229. It's wise.

  230. It's good.

  231. It helps Eve flourish.

  232. Well, this authority structure

  233. and leadership

  234. is designed to make Adam and Eve

  235. thrive and flourish

  236. and enjoy life even more.

  237. And in fact,

  238. the fall happened

  239. when all this responsibility

  240. and leadership and authority,

  241. the fall happened

  242. when all this was flipped.

  243. So,

  244. how did God design Adam and Eve

  245. and creation?

  246. what was that order?

  247. So, in creation,

  248. Adam was made first

  249. and then he was to be

  250. leader

  251. over Eve.

  252. Remember,

  253. I'm not saying better,

  254. I can say better,

  255. but both images

  256. have got both

  257. of equal worth and dignity.

  258. but there is an order

  259. of leadership

  260. and then both of them together,

  261. they would have dominion

  262. over creation.

  263. Draw a little

  264. slow there.

  265. Right?

  266. You see that?

  267. So, Adam, Eve,

  268. and then creation.

  269. But,

  270. but they're ruling

  271. over creation together.

  272. So,

  273. so God has designed

  274. an order

  275. into creation

  276. like this.

  277. but look what happens

  278. in the fall.

  279. Let's just quickly scan

  280. through chapter three

  281. in the fall.

  282. Who leads

  283. this whole event

  284. of the fall?

  285. Who kind of triggers

  286. it all?

  287. Who's the voice

  288. that is listened to

  289. that kind of gives

  290. all the commands?

  291. It's,

  292. it's the serpents,

  293. isn't it?

  294. He triggers it all.

  295. Right?

  296. And who does he address

  297. in the marriage?

  298. Who does all this

  299. conversation happen with

  300. that Satan,

  301. the serpents,

  302. speaks to?

  303. Eve.

  304. Right?

  305. Who's leading the marriage?

  306. It's Eve.

  307. And who is there

  308. watching the whole time

  309. and just follows along?

  310. It's Adam.

  311. Adam.

  312. God has designed

  313. a leadership dynamic

  314. in marriage

  315. and the fall happens

  316. when,

  317. when it's broken,

  318. when it's flipped.

  319. And humanity

  320. does not flourish

  321. when this order

  322. is flipped.

  323. And we can,

  324. we can summarize

  325. this dynamic

  326. as headship.

  327. Headship.

  328. So there's

  329. sub point B,

  330. D, sorry.

  331. In marriage,

  332. the husband

  333. is head

  334. over his wife.

  335. The husband,

  336. we can say,

  337. has headship

  338. over his wife.

  339. And so headship,

  340. however,

  341. whatever your,

  342. your views of it

  343. or experience of it

  344. at all,

  345. headship

  346. is not part

  347. of the fall.

  348. Bad headship

  349. is part of the fall.

  350. We'll see that next week.

  351. But can we see

  352. pre-fall,

  353. while we're still

  354. in the blueprint,

  355. while things are still

  356. very good,

  357. pre-fall,

  358. there is an order

  359. and authority

  360. built into creation

  361. and marriage.

  362. God has designed

  363. the husband

  364. to be

  365. head of the wife.

  366. It's there

  367. in the blueprint.

  368. And this is how

  369. marriage

  370. and humanity

  371. flourishes.

  372. But we get

  373. most clarity

  374. over this

  375. when we enter

  376. the New Testament

  377. because the Apostle

  378. Paul,

  379. in Ephesians 5,

  380. he shows us

  381. there is an

  382. even more

  383. beautiful reason

  384. behind this idea

  385. of headship.

  386. So let's turn

  387. to Ephesians 5

  388. and let's just

  389. read this passage.

  390. Ephesians 5,

  391. 22 to 33.

  392. Ephesians 5.

  393. It's on page

  394. 978.

  395. So let's read

  396. verses 22

  397. to 33.

  398. Ephesians 5.

  399. Wives,

  400. so I'll wait

  401. for you to turn

  402. there.

  403. Ephesians 5,

  404. starting verse 22.

  405. It's on page 978.

  406. Wives,

  407. submit to your

  408. own husbands

  409. as to the Lord.

  410. For the husband

  411. is the head

  412. of the wife,

  413. even as Christ

  414. is head of the church,

  415. his body,

  416. and is himself

  417. its saviour.

  418. Did you notice

  419. the word head there?

  420. Now as the church

  421. submits to Christ,

  422. so also wives

  423. should submit

  424. in everything

  425. to their husbands.

  426. Husbands,

  427. love your wives

  428. as Christ loved

  429. the church

  430. and gave himself

  431. up for her.

  432. That he might

  433. sanctify her,

  434. having cleansed her

  435. by the washing

  436. of water

  437. with the word,

  438. so that he might

  439. present the church

  440. to himself

  441. in splendour,

  442. without spot

  443. or wrinkle

  444. or any such thing

  445. that she might be

  446. holy and without

  447. blemish.

  448. In the same way,

  449. husbands should

  450. love their wives

  451. as their own bodies.

  452. He who loves his wife

  453. loves himself.

  454. For no one ever

  455. hated his own flesh,

  456. but nourishes

  457. and cherishes it

  458. just as Christ

  459. does the church,

  460. because we are

  461. members of his body.

  462. Therefore,

  463. a man shall leave

  464. his father and mother

  465. and hold fast

  466. to his wife,

  467. and the two

  468. shall become one flesh.

  469. This mystery is profound,

  470. and I'm saying

  471. that it refers

  472. to Christ

  473. and the church.

  474. However,

  475. let each one of you

  476. love his wife

  477. as himself,

  478. and let the wife

  479. see that she

  480. respects her husband.

  481. So,

  482. Genesis 2

  483. that we've just seen,

  484. that is our blueprint

  485. for marriage.

  486. That is the model,

  487. but actually,

  488. there is a deeper

  489. and more ultimate model.

  490. It's Christ

  491. and the church.

  492. Did you see that

  493. in verse 31?

  494. Therefore,

  495. a man shall leave

  496. his father and mother

  497. and hold fast

  498. to his wife,

  499. and the two

  500. shall become one flesh.

  501. Recognize that verse.

  502. Marriage.

  503. marriage.

  504. This mystery

  505. of marriage

  506. is profound,

  507. and I am saying

  508. that it refers

  509. to Christ

  510. and the church.

  511. Do you see

  512. what he's saying here?

  513. The relationship

  514. between Christ

  515. and the church,

  516. that is the

  517. marriage blueprint

  518. which all

  519. other marriages

  520. are based on.

  521. So,

  522. think of it like this.

  523. So,

  524. if you have Christ,

  525. Christ is married

  526. to the church,

  527. to his bride.

  528. So,

  529. that is the

  530. ultimate marriage,

  531. right?

  532. And from that,

  533. from that,

  534. all other marriages

  535. are based on it.

  536. Right?

  537. There you go.

  538. That's me and Bethany.

  539. There you go.

  540. And so,

  541. if that's the model,

  542. and that's what

  543. all other marriages

  544. flow from

  545. and model

  546. and are kind of

  547. patterned after,

  548. that means

  549. there is

  550. a profound

  551. calling

  552. and design

  553. for the husband.

  554. So,

  555. so verse 25,

  556. husbands,

  557. love your wives

  558. as Christ

  559. loved the church.

  560. And gave

  561. himself up

  562. for her.

  563. Husbands

  564. are to be

  565. to their wives

  566. like Christ

  567. is

  568. to the church.

  569. And what

  570. does Christ

  571. do for his

  572. church for us?

  573. Well,

  574. he leads us.

  575. He represents

  576. us.

  577. He teaches

  578. us.

  579. He nourishes

  580. us.

  581. He protects

  582. us.

  583. He loves

  584. us.

  585. He sacrificed

  586. himself for

  587. us.

  588. He bled

  589. us.

  590. So that

  591. we would

  592. live.

  593. And a

  594. husband's

  595. leadership

  596. is to

  597. reflect that.

  598. A husband's

  599. leadership and

  600. authority is

  601. not about

  602. getting his

  603. way,

  604. not about

  605. domineering or

  606. crushing his

  607. wife or

  608. demanding whatever

  609. he wants.

  610. No,

  611. it is a

  612. self-sacrificial,

  613. loving

  614. leadership.

  615. And it's

  616. with a

  617. purpose.

  618. Verse 27,

  619. he does

  620. all this so

  621. that he

  622. might present

  623. the church

  624. to himself

  625. in splendor

  626. without spot

  627. or wrinkle

  628. or any

  629. such thing

  630. that she

  631. might be

  632. holy and

  633. without

  634. blemish.

  635. That is

  636. Christ's

  637. purpose in

  638. all his

  639. love for

  640. us.

  641. And that

  642. is the

  643. husband's

  644. goal in

  645. all his

  646. leadership and

  647. love for

  648. his wife.

  649. Husbands,

  650. let me speak

  651. to the

  652. husbands in

  653. the room,

  654. our big

  655. goal in

  656. marriage is

  657. to make

  658. our wives

  659. holy and

  660. without

  661. blemish.

  662. That means

  663. spiritually

  664. beautiful.

  665. We are to

  666. take onto

  667. our shoulders

  668. the leadership

  669. of the

  670. marriage so

  671. that our

  672. wives will

  673. love Jesus

  674. more and

  675. more.

  676. Because that

  677. is what

  678. Jesus is

  679. doing for

  680. us.

  681. And that

  682. will mean,

  683. let's think

  684. practical things,

  685. that will

  686. mean praying

  687. for her,

  688. reading the

  689. Bible with

  690. her,

  691. maybe doing

  692. the dishes

  693. so that

  694. she can

  695. spend time

  696. reading,

  697. doing all

  698. that you

  699. can to

  700. make Sunday

  701. a joy for

  702. her,

  703. whatever it

  704. is.

  705. And that

  706. means also

  707. a wife has

  708. a special

  709. calling too.

  710. Verse 22,

  711. wives,

  712. submit to

  713. your own

  714. husbands as

  715. to the

  716. Lord.

  717. This is

  718. God's

  719. beautiful

  720. design and

  721. purpose for

  722. a wife

  723. in marriage.

  724. marriage.

  725. It's to

  726. follow the

  727. leadership that

  728. God has

  729. given you.

  730. It's to

  731. submit,

  732. it's to

  733. be under

  734. the love

  735. of your

  736. husband.

  737. So just

  738. like Adam

  739. was to

  740. protect

  741. Eve at

  742. his side,

  743. well the

  744. wife is

  745. to willingly

  746. stand by

  747. her husband's

  748. side and

  749. be protected,

  750. be led,

  751. be made

  752. beautiful.

  753. And the

  754. word

  755. submission

  756. makes us

  757. flinch,

  758. doesn't it?

  759. Society

  760. doesn't like

  761. this word,

  762. but we

  763. need to

  764. see the

  765. beauty in

  766. it.

  767. It's when

  768. husbands and

  769. wives do

  770. this,

  771. not only

  772. is this

  773. where we

  774. flourish in

  775. our

  776. creative

  777. design,

  778. not only

  779. is this

  780. where we

  781. flourish in

  782. our

  783. creative

  784. design,

  785. but this

  786. is where

  787. we reflect

  788. something

  789. incomparably

  790. glorious.

  791. We

  792. reflect

  793. Christ and

  794. the church

  795. when we

  796. do this.

  797. And so

  798. God didn't

  799. think,

  800. oh,

  801. there's this

  802. thing called

  803. marriage down

  804. there on

  805. earth,

  806. that kind

  807. of looks

  808. like the

  809. gospel that

  810. I've got

  811. planned up

  812. in my

  813. head.

  814. I tell you

  815. what,

  816. I'm going

  817. to make

  818. Christ and

  819. the church

  820. be modelled

  821. after that

  822. thing called

  823. marriage down

  824. there.

  825. No,

  826. God has

  827. always planned

  828. Christ and

  829. his church.

  830. And he

  831. said,

  832. I'm going

  833. to model

  834. marriage

  835. after that.

  836. I want

  837. marriage on

  838. earth to

  839. reflect this

  840. heavenly

  841. marriage.

  842. And so

  843. all this

  844. that Paul

  845. is saying

  846. here,

  847. all this

  848. isn't

  849. cultural.

  850. Paul

  851. isn't saying

  852. this because

  853. this was

  854. just the

  855. old-fashioned

  856. way of

  857. thinking about

  858. marriage and

  859. we've moved

  860. on from

  861. that.

  862. No,

  863. this is

  864. rooted in

  865. two deep

  866. things.

  867. It's rooted

  868. in creation

  869. and it's

  870. rooted in

  871. the gospel.

  872. And so

  873. there is a

  874. good headship

  875. in marriage.

  876. Now,

  877. let's ask,

  878. are we

  879. doing for

  880. time?

  881. We're good

  882. for time.

  883. Let's just

  884. ask,

  885. is this

  886. dynamic,

  887. this headship,

  888. is this

  889. only in

  890. marriage?

  891. If this is

  892. how men and

  893. women design,

  894. is this only

  895. in marriage?

  896. Well,

  897. also we

  898. could ask,

  899. what about

  900. unmarried men

  901. and unmarried

  902. women?

  903. Well,

  904. we must say,

  905. let's just be

  906. clear,

  907. this command

  908. Paul is

  909. giving here

  910. in Ephesians

  911. 5,

  912. this command

  913. for women

  914. to submit

  915. and men

  916. to love,

  917. this is

  918. explicitly

  919. between a

  920. husband and

  921. a wife,

  922. isn't it?

  923. all right?

  924. He doesn't

  925. say,

  926. all women

  927. submit to

  928. all men.

  929. So,

  930. unmarried

  931. women here,

  932. if a random

  933. guy comes up

  934. to you and

  935. says,

  936. well,

  937. I'm a man,

  938. I'm the head

  939. over you,

  940. so do

  941. whatever I

  942. say,

  943. here's what

  944. you can say

  945. to him,

  946. you say,

  947. no,

  948. go away,

  949. all right?

  950. You can say

  951. that.

  952. Because this

  953. command is

  954. most clearly

  955. seen in

  956. marriage,

  957. but,

  958. how we

  959. are made,

  960. this order,

  961. this design,

  962. how we're

  963. made,

  964. it does

  965. ripple out

  966. beyond

  967. marriage.

  968. Adam had

  969. his calling

  970. even before

  971. Eve was

  972. made,

  973. didn't he?

  974. Men are

  975. designed for

  976. and called

  977. to this

  978. posture of

  979. leading and

  980. sacrificing and

  981. caring and

  982. protecting.

  983. And you may

  984. ask,

  985. well,

  986. I'm a single

  987. guy,

  988. or my

  989. son is

  990. single.

  991. You might

  992. think,

  993. well,

  994. I don't

  995. have a

  996. wife or

  997. family to

  998. protect.

  999. Well,

  1000. actually,

  1001. God has

  1002. given you

  1003. a family.

  1004. Firstly,

  1005. you have a

  1006. church family,

  1007. and that

  1008. is a realm

  1009. where you

  1010. can exercise

  1011. your calling

  1012. as a man.

  1013. Sacrifice

  1014. yourself for

  1015. the people

  1016. in this

  1017. church.

  1018. Sacrifice

  1019. your time

  1020. and energy

  1021. to serve

  1022. the people

  1023. in this

  1024. church.

  1025. Go out

  1026. of your

  1027. way to

  1028. protect the

  1029. people in

  1030. this church,

  1031. especially

  1032. the women.

  1033. Now,

  1034. what would

  1035. that look

  1036. like?

  1037. This is

  1038. kind of the

  1039. starting point.

  1040. I want you

  1041. to think

  1042. about this,

  1043. be proactive

  1044. in how you

  1045. can be

  1046. this,

  1047. but it

  1048. could be

  1049. practically

  1050. thinking,

  1051. stacking

  1052. chairs,

  1053. repairing

  1054. the building,

  1055. helping at

  1056. Club 16,

  1057. leading a

  1058. reading group.

  1059. There are

  1060. lots of

  1061. ways you

  1062. can do

  1063. this.

  1064. The church

  1065. is your

  1066. family,

  1067. where you

  1068. are called

  1069. to be

  1070. a

  1071. man.

  1072. But also,

  1073. what is

  1074. a nation?

  1075. What does

  1076. the Bible

  1077. say about

  1078. a nation?

  1079. What is

  1080. a nation?

  1081. A nation

  1082. is a

  1083. family.

  1084. Nations

  1085. come from

  1086. families.

  1087. You can

  1088. see this

  1089. in the

  1090. Old

  1091. Testament.

  1092. Married

  1093. and unmarried

  1094. men and

  1095. women,

  1096. you can

  1097. fulfill

  1098. your design

  1099. and calling

  1100. in this

  1101. family of

  1102. this nation.

  1103. Sacrifice

  1104. yourself and

  1105. lead and

  1106. form and

  1107. protect in

  1108. your community.

  1109. And for

  1110. unmarried

  1111. women as

  1112. well,

  1113. let me

  1114. speak to

  1115. you.

  1116. You have

  1117. a family

  1118. here too.

  1119. You have

  1120. a family

  1121. here in

  1122. church and

  1123. in this

  1124. nation and

  1125. that is

  1126. your opportunity,

  1127. that is your

  1128. domain where

  1129. you can be

  1130. a woman and

  1131. you can give

  1132. life and

  1133. you can fill

  1134. it with

  1135. vibrancy and

  1136. colour and

  1137. community and

  1138. you can make

  1139. this world even

  1140. more worthwhile.

  1141. And so just

  1142. think, men or

  1143. women, if you

  1144. are not married,

  1145. that doesn't

  1146. mean you are

  1147. less of a

  1148. man or

  1149. woman or

  1150. you can't

  1151. fulfill this

  1152. calling.

  1153. No, no,

  1154. you have a

  1155. wonderful design.

  1156. And this

  1157. design in

  1158. Dunantmach,

  1159. it goes beyond

  1160. marriage in

  1161. the church and

  1162. in the nation,

  1163. but also it's

  1164. particularly seen

  1165. in church

  1166. eldership.

  1167. And this is

  1168. where I want

  1169. to spend

  1170. this next

  1171. little bit.

  1172. Yeah, I

  1173. reckon.

  1174. Let's do,

  1175. let's stop

  1176. there just for

  1177. two minutes of

  1178. questions and

  1179. then we'll

  1180. go into

  1181. church

  1182. eldership.

  1183. Yeah,

  1184. Blackis.

  1185. Is there

  1186. some of

  1187. any

  1188. implications

  1189. for the

  1190. workplace?

  1191. Good question.

  1192. Yeah.

  1193. So the

  1194. practical

  1195. outworking of

  1196. this, this is

  1197. why I didn't

  1198. want to give

  1199. too many

  1200. concrete.

  1201. I think that

  1202. there's just a

  1203. lot of wisdom

  1204. in this.

  1205. Yeah, each

  1206. situation will be

  1207. different.

  1208. And quite

  1209. frankly, there's

  1210. no law here

  1211. about it.

  1212. I said this

  1213. last week,

  1214. there's no

  1215. strict law

  1216. about what

  1217. forming and

  1218. filling looks

  1219. like.

  1220. And the

  1221. application in

  1222. this big and

  1223. complicated,

  1224. messy world,

  1225. it will look

  1226. different and

  1227. it takes

  1228. wisdom to

  1229. apply this.

  1230. But what I

  1231. would say is,

  1232. first of all,

  1233. at least think

  1234. about it.

  1235. Don't just,

  1236. yeah, don't go

  1237. into things

  1238. blindly.

  1239. Like, care about

  1240. how God has

  1241. ordered the

  1242. world.

  1243. And also,

  1244. let's not be

  1245. nervous about

  1246. where these

  1247. things lead

  1248. either.

  1249. If God has

  1250. designed this

  1251. well to form

  1252. and fill and

  1253. for there to

  1254. be kind of a

  1255. creation order,

  1256. to follow it,

  1257. to embrace

  1258. that, let's

  1259. not be nervous

  1260. about where

  1261. that might lead

  1262. because it's a

  1263. good design.

  1264. And so, I'm

  1265. going to dodge

  1266. your question

  1267. there.

  1268. But I want

  1269. all of this,

  1270. I want this to

  1271. be a starting

  1272. point, to at

  1273. least begin to

  1274. think about it

  1275. and just embrace

  1276. it's a posture

  1277. to lean into.

  1278. So, yeah, I

  1279. think I'll

  1280. leave it there.

  1281. Any more

  1282. controversial

  1283. questions?

  1284. Let's go on

  1285. to something

  1286. else.

  1287. Church

  1288. eldership.

  1289. We can chat

  1290. afterwards if

  1291. you've got more

  1292. questions.

  1293. So, this

  1294. created order,

  1295. it flows out

  1296. beyond marriage

  1297. and we

  1298. particularly see

  1299. this in church

  1300. eldership.

  1301. So, if

  1302. you've noticed

  1303. in IPCE

  1304. link, we

  1305. only have

  1306. men as

  1307. elders and

  1308. ministers in

  1309. this church,

  1310. don't we?

  1311. And I want

  1312. to show you

  1313. today why

  1314. we do this

  1315. and also,

  1316. just like

  1317. marriage, I

  1318. want you to

  1319. see why this

  1320. is a really

  1321. good thing.

  1322. So, look

  1323. at 1 Timothy

  1324. 2, I've got

  1325. it printed out

  1326. there for you.

  1327. I'd love to

  1328. spend more

  1329. time in more

  1330. passages, but

  1331. let's just get

  1332. to the heart

  1333. of it.

  1334. 1 Timothy

  1335. 2, these

  1336. are Paul's

  1337. words to a

  1338. minister,

  1339. Timothy, and

  1340. this letter

  1341. is, Timothy,

  1342. this is how

  1343. you need to

  1344. order the

  1345. church, this

  1346. is how the

  1347. household of

  1348. the church

  1349. needs to

  1350. run.

  1351. So, there

  1352. are lots of

  1353. things, but

  1354. this, he

  1355. talks about,

  1356. well, let's

  1357. just dive in,

  1358. let's read it,

  1359. 1 Timothy

  1360. 2.

  1361. Let a

  1362. woman learn

  1363. quietly with

  1364. all submissiveness.

  1365. I do not

  1366. permit a

  1367. woman to

  1368. teach or to

  1369. exercise

  1370. authority over

  1371. a man,

  1372. rather she

  1373. is to

  1374. remain quiet.

  1375. For Adam

  1376. was formed

  1377. first, then

  1378. Eve, and

  1379. Eve was not

  1380. deceived, but

  1381. the woman was

  1382. deceived and

  1383. became a

  1384. transgressor.

  1385. So, the

  1386. first thing to

  1387. say about

  1388. this, and

  1389. let's just be

  1390. clear, what

  1391. Paul is saying

  1392. here is not

  1393. demeaning,

  1394. okay?

  1395. First of all,

  1396. this is God's

  1397. word, this is

  1398. good.

  1399. But in

  1400. fact, for

  1401. a woman to

  1402. be encouraged

  1403. to learn

  1404. at all in

  1405. this age, that

  1406. would have

  1407. been surprising

  1408. in those days,

  1409. Paul's saying

  1410. this.

  1411. So, Paul is

  1412. actually saying

  1413. something wonderful,

  1414. he wants women

  1415. to learn here,

  1416. and that was

  1417. very counter

  1418. cultural,

  1419. okay?

  1420. And what

  1421. does he say?

  1422. He says,

  1423. to do so

  1424. quietly and

  1425. with all

  1426. submissiveness.

  1427. Now, this

  1428. isn't saying

  1429. women should

  1430. be silent

  1431. always in

  1432. the church

  1433. whatever

  1434. occasion.

  1435. No, he's

  1436. not saying

  1437. that.

  1438. There are

  1439. other commands

  1440. in the New

  1441. Testament,

  1442. commands to

  1443. sing and

  1444. for women to

  1445. train the

  1446. younger women.

  1447. That's

  1448. commanding the

  1449. church.

  1450. That involves

  1451. talking.

  1452. So, he's

  1453. not talking

  1454. about utter

  1455. silence in

  1456. the church.

  1457. No.

  1458. But Paul's

  1459. focus here is

  1460. the teaching

  1461. ministry.

  1462. And the

  1463. quietness he's

  1464. talking about

  1465. here, it's

  1466. to do with

  1467. submissiveness,

  1468. right?

  1469. Can you see

  1470. those two

  1471. things that

  1472. they're next

  1473. to each

  1474. other?

  1475. So, just

  1476. like when a

  1477. wife submits

  1478. to her

  1479. husband, it

  1480. means being

  1481. led, being

  1482. willing to

  1483. follow, right?

  1484. Well, a

  1485. woman in

  1486. church is

  1487. to be a

  1488. follower and

  1489. a listener

  1490. when it

  1491. comes to

  1492. teaching.

  1493. And Paul

  1494. just states

  1495. this explicitly

  1496. in verse

  1497. 12.

  1498. I do not

  1499. permit a

  1500. woman to

  1501. teach or

  1502. to exercise

  1503. authority over

  1504. a man, rather

  1505. she's to

  1506. remain quiet.

  1507. So, Paul is

  1508. highlighting a

  1509. dynamic between

  1510. men and

  1511. women in the

  1512. church here.

  1513. When it

  1514. comes to

  1515. ruling,

  1516. authority, and

  1517. teaching in

  1518. the church,

  1519. let's say

  1520. eldership,

  1521. right?

  1522. Church

  1523. eldership.

  1524. When it

  1525. comes to

  1526. church

  1527. eldership,

  1528. that position

  1529. and that

  1530. office, he's

  1531. saying, is

  1532. for men

  1533. alone.

  1534. Now, some

  1535. people may

  1536. not like to

  1537. hear that.

  1538. The culture

  1539. certainly wouldn't

  1540. like to hear

  1541. that.

  1542. But let's

  1543. first be

  1544. agreed, that

  1545. is what Paul

  1546. is saying,

  1547. right?

  1548. That is what

  1549. Paul is

  1550. saying.

  1551. But let's

  1552. ask, why

  1553. does Paul

  1554. say this?

  1555. a bit like

  1556. marriage?

  1557. Some people

  1558. want to

  1559. say, well,

  1560. this is just

  1561. Paul being

  1562. misogynistic.

  1563. He's just a

  1564. product of

  1565. his day.

  1566. But no,

  1567. Paul doesn't

  1568. give a

  1569. reason from

  1570. culture, but

  1571. creation.

  1572. So, look at

  1573. verse 13.

  1574. Why?

  1575. Why should

  1576. women not be

  1577. elders?

  1578. For, because,

  1579. because Adam

  1580. was formed

  1581. first, then

  1582. Eve, the

  1583. reason behind

  1584. male-only

  1585. eldership is

  1586. because Adam

  1587. was formed

  1588. first, and

  1589. then Eve.

  1590. He's referring

  1591. back to all

  1592. that we've just

  1593. been talking

  1594. about in

  1595. Genesis 2.

  1596. Man was

  1597. to have

  1598. responsibility

  1599. and leadership

  1600. and authority.

  1601. Adam had

  1602. that over

  1603. Eve, that's

  1604. the pattern

  1605. of creation.

  1606. And that

  1607. pattern, it's

  1608. to be in

  1609. the church

  1610. too.

  1611. It's good

  1612. for creation,

  1613. and so

  1614. it's good

  1615. for the

  1616. church

  1617. too.

  1618. And he

  1619. also gives

  1620. another reason,

  1621. verse 14.

  1622. Because,

  1623. why should

  1624. women not

  1625. be elders?

  1626. Because Adam

  1627. was not

  1628. deceived, but

  1629. the woman

  1630. was deceived

  1631. and became

  1632. a transgressor.

  1633. Again, I

  1634. could talk a

  1635. lot about

  1636. this, but

  1637. to get to

  1638. the heart

  1639. of it, he's

  1640. referring to

  1641. what happened

  1642. here in

  1643. the fall.

  1644. He's talking

  1645. about when

  1646. the creation

  1647. was flipped.

  1648. Eve was

  1649. deceived,

  1650. wasn't she,

  1651. by Satan,

  1652. and she

  1653. was acting

  1654. his head

  1655. over Adam.

  1656. And Paul

  1657. is saying

  1658. things go

  1659. wrong when

  1660. the order

  1661. is flipped.

  1662. And so

  1663. keep that

  1664. order within

  1665. the church.

  1666. And so

  1667. a woman

  1668. with teaching

  1669. authority over

  1670. a man,

  1671. that is

  1672. flipping the

  1673. creation

  1674. order.

  1675. better.

  1676. And it's

  1677. not because

  1678. men just

  1679. are better.

  1680. He's not

  1681. saying that.

  1682. It's not

  1683. because women

  1684. aren't good

  1685. at teaching.

  1686. There are

  1687. plenty of

  1688. gifted women

  1689. who are

  1690. incredible

  1691. teachers.

  1692. The reason

  1693. is far

  1694. deeper and

  1695. far better.

  1696. It's rooted

  1697. in the

  1698. order of

  1699. creation.

  1700. God has

  1701. designed

  1702. creation and

  1703. his church

  1704. with the

  1705. same pattern.

  1706. And that's

  1707. why in the

  1708. next chapter

  1709. of 1

  1710. Timothy, I

  1711. encourage you

  1712. to read

  1713. 1 Timothy,

  1714. in the

  1715. next chapter

  1716. straight after

  1717. this, Paul

  1718. gives a list

  1719. of qualifications

  1720. for elders.

  1721. And he

  1722. says, two

  1723. qualifications

  1724. stand out.

  1725. He must be

  1726. the husband

  1727. of one

  1728. wife.

  1729. Another, the

  1730. actual phrase

  1731. is a one

  1732. woman man.

  1733. Okay?

  1734. And another

  1735. qualification, he

  1736. must manage

  1737. his own

  1738. household well.

  1739. The authority

  1740. in your

  1741. household needs

  1742. to match

  1743. the authority

  1744. in eldership.

  1745. Okay?

  1746. And all

  1747. these are

  1748. qualifications that

  1749. require elders

  1750. to be men.

  1751. But also, let

  1752. me just finish

  1753. with this.

  1754. Like Ephesians

  1755. 5, male

  1756. eldership reflects

  1757. the gospel.

  1758. What is going

  1759. on in the

  1760. preaching of the

  1761. Bible?

  1762. Like this

  1763. morning, but

  1764. what's going

  1765. to happen in

  1766. the preaching

  1767. of the Bible?

  1768. Christ, the

  1769. groom, is

  1770. speaking to

  1771. his bride.

  1772. And we, the

  1773. bride, humbly

  1774. submit and

  1775. listen.

  1776. And we're

  1777. nourished and

  1778. protected and

  1779. given life by

  1780. Christ as he

  1781. speaks to us.

  1782. Well, the

  1783. minister, as he

  1784. preaches, he

  1785. is an ambassador

  1786. of Christ,

  1787. speaking on

  1788. Christ's behalf

  1789. with an

  1790. authority given

  1791. by Christ.

  1792. And he's

  1793. speaking to the

  1794. bride of Christ.

  1795. And so, who

  1796. that minister

  1797. is, that

  1798. matters.

  1799. It must

  1800. reflect what's

  1801. going on in the

  1802. deeper reality.

  1803. ministry.

  1804. That minister

  1805. must reflect the

  1806. maleness of

  1807. Christ speaking

  1808. to his bride.

  1809. It's a living

  1810. picture of the

  1811. gospel.

  1812. And so,

  1813. headship in

  1814. marriage and

  1815. male church

  1816. eldership, this

  1817. isn't something to

  1818. be ashamed of.

  1819. Although the

  1820. culture would

  1821. make us think

  1822. that.

  1823. No, this is

  1824. glorious.

  1825. Both are the

  1826. pattern of how

  1827. we are designed

  1828. and how we

  1829. flourish.

  1830. And both are a

  1831. reflection of the

  1832. gospel.

  1833. Let me end

  1834. there and we

  1835. can have one

  1836. minute for

  1837. questions.

  1838. Or you can

  1839. come to me

  1840. afterwards and

  1841. ask questions

  1842. either way.

  1843. Yep.

  1844. Have a go.

  1845. Sorry.

  1846. Sorry.

  1847. About how this

  1848. other imagery

  1849. points back

  1850. that I know

  1851. you've got a

  1852. little bit

  1853. here.

  1854. It is Christ

  1855. and his

  1856. church.

  1857. Shirley was

  1858. talking about

  1859. the living

  1860. Christ and

  1861. the church

  1862. which is

  1863. the living

  1864. part.

  1865. And then

  1866. he was

  1867. talking about

  1868. marriage which

  1869. is a sacrament

  1870. and his

  1871. church.

  1872. So then how

  1873. is the

  1874. pastor a

  1875. picture of

  1876. Christ and

  1877. his church.

  1878. And he is a

  1879. member of

  1880. the church.

  1881. Yep.

  1882. So he

  1883. both.

  1884. So yes,

  1885. absolutely.

  1886. Every

  1887. day minister

  1888. is a

  1889. part of

  1890. the

  1891. Christ.

  1892. But there's

  1893. a

  1894. a

  1895. a

  1896. a

  1897. a

  1898. a

  1899. a

  1900. a

  1901. a

  1902. who

  1903. speaks

  1904. of

  1905. people

  1906. !

1907. so you are ultimately a sheep as well

  1908. but you should say

1909. actually elders and churches are also under shepherds

  1910. under the ultimate

1911. shepherd of the Lord's Christ

1912. so it's both, is that what you're

1913. yeah, I'd love to know that there's other references

1914. that are away from you

1915. sorry, I would love to go into this

1916. and so, well, let me

  1917. reference all this

1918. I mentioned this at the beginning, so

1919. well actually, let's do this, Men and Women of the Church

  1920. by Kevin Young, this

1921. basically goes into all the stuff I was

1922. talking to Abigail about, like all the more details

1923. if you're not quite sure about

1924. all this and you want like, you know, give me

  1925. some more Bible passages

1926. Kevin Young does that, I'm sorry, I just don't have the

1927. time to do all that, but

1928. I recommend go to Kevin Young, Men and Women of the Church

1929. we might be ordering some more

1930. I think that's on the way to the bookstall, if not

1931. if you're eager, just order online

1932. Men and Women of the Church, and this will talk about

1933. kind of the design for

1934. men and women as well, and just a

1935. general one for all that we've been doing

1936. on humanity, how many works

1937. image of God, this is on the

1938. books also, go have a look

1939. sorry for keeping you, come

1940. questions afterwards, let me pray

  1941. Lord God, we

  1942. thank you

  1943. for your wise

  1944. creation

1945. your wonderful ways in this world, in our

  1946. lives, in salvation, in

  1947. creation and providence

  1948. and Lord would you

  1949. please help us to

  1950. comprehend these things

  1951. help us to

1952. believe them, and to apply

1953. them into our lives with great wisdom and care

1954. and we ask all this

1955. in the help of your

1956. spirit and in the name of your son, amen

  1957. who

  1958. who

  1959. who

  1960. who

  1961. who

  1962. Thank you.
