  1. Please turn in your Bibles to Malachi chapter 3, the last book of the Old Testament.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  2. We're finishing off Malachi today.

  3. The plan is to begin a series in Acts next Sunday, God willing.

  4. If you want to do some prep for that, maybe read Luke's Gospel and read Acts in preparation for that.

  5. Malachi chapter 3 verse 13, to the end of the book.

    Malachi 3:13

  6. Let me tell you some things that I've learnt recently.

  7. I've learnt you can waste a lot of time in traffic on the Xbridge Road, can't you?

  8. I've learnt that trying to get the E1 bus to go faster is a waste of time.

  9. I've learnt that expecting to pass exams without doing any revision is a waste of time.

  10. I've learnt that hoping your park run time will improve without doing any training or any runs in between is a waste of time.

  11. We waste our time, don't we, on lots of things.

  12. We waste our time in loads of things.

  13. I might say to somebody, what a waste of time.

  14. What about serving God?

  15. What about living for God?

  16. Is that a waste of time?

  17. Look at Malachi chapter 3 verse 13.

    Malachi 3:13

  18. It's the final kind of dispute argument of the book.

  19. And the pattern we've seen repeated over the last few weeks.

  20. Israel question or challenge God and God responds.

  21. And you see it for one last time in chapter 3 verse 13.

  22. Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord.

  23. But you say, how have we spoken against you?

  24. You have said it is vain to serve God.

  25. It's a waste of time to serve God.

  26. What is the profit of keeping his charge or walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?

  27. And now we call the arrogant, blessed, evil doers not only prosper,

  28. but they put God to the test and they escape.

  29. And God rebukes Israel, the people of God, for the harsh things they've said.

  30. They plead innocence before God, but God replies by outlining and showing them their sin.

  31. And on this occasion, the allegation is that serving God is a waste of time.

  32. It's futile.

  33. And those who do wrong things, those who live for themselves and for pleasure,

  34. they seem to get away with it.

  35. And so they say, what's the point?

  36. It's similar to chapter 2 verse 17, isn't it?

  37. Where God says, you've wearied me with your words.

  38. I'm fed up of you.

  39. But you say, how have we wearied you?

  40. By saying everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord and delights in them,

  41. or by asking, where is the God of justice?

  42. It's easy to see this, isn't it, from God's perspective, how offensive it is.

  43. But we need to get inside the head of the people of God at that time.

  44. Why did they feel that way?

  45. They may have seen the world in the same way we see the world.

  46. They saw evil people doing great harm to others and yet seemingly getting away with it.

  47. And they may well have experienced what we often experience as the people of God.

  48. They were doing the things that God had asked them to do,

  49. but it didn't feel like it was a blessed way of life.

  50. It didn't feel like it was all it was cracked up to be.

  51. In fact, it felt hollow.

  52. It felt that God was far away.

  53. When it all boils down to it, it seems as if they felt there was no punishment for doing evil

  54. and no reward for doing good.

  55. So what's the point?

  56. They thought that there was no distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.

  57. And I don't know about you, but those sentiments are not always that far from my mind.

  58. It's probably not the sort of thing that I say to my Christian friends.

  59. And we wouldn't readily admit it, but I suspect many of us here have, at one time or another,

  60. have thought this, or perhaps we've even said it to God.

  61. It can sometimes feel like there's no distinction between the righteous and the wicked.

  62. It can sometimes feel there's no punishment for evil, no reward for doing good.

  63. It can sometimes feel like serving God is a waste of time.

  64. And we can feel that the Christian life is not all that it's cracked up to be.

  65. We can look, can't we?

  66. And maybe you children and young people do this.

  67. You look at your friends who are from non-Christian families,

  68. and you think, well, they're having more fun than I am.

  69. And God has us working hard and living through maybe difficult things,

  70. and sometimes we feel there's not a lot of reward to go with the sacrifice.

  71. And certainly that's how it felt for Israel.

  72. But not quite all of Israel.

  73. Can you look at verse 16?

  74. It's a beautiful verse.

  75. Those who feared the Lord.

  76. They spoke with one another.

  77. And what did the Lord do?

  78. The Lord paid attention and heard them.

  79. And a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.

  80. There's a group of people who refused to believe that serving God was futile.

  81. Here are those who maintained that actually serving God is not a waste of time.

  82. And as such, they shine like a beacon in the darkness of Israel's doubt.

  83. Chapter 3, verse 16 really is a standout verse in the book of Malachi.

  84. Malachi.

  85. These people serve God, and so therefore they fear God.

  86. That is, they want to honour his name.

  87. It isn't a fear like you might, a fear of the dark,

  88. or a fear of things that go bump in the night.

  89. It's the fear of knowing the all-powerful God,

  90. and how great and how majestic he is.

  91. How awesome he is.

  92. And these people have appreciated God for who he is and what he does.

  93. And how he deserves to be treated.

  94. And Malachi tells us that God commits himself

  95. to remembering those people favourably.

  96. He writes their name on a scroll.

  97. It's a bit of a hint to us about what God is about to say,

  98. but at this point they stand, don't they, as a quiet minority.

  99. They resist the majority view in Israel.

  100. And they force us to ask at this point, well who is right?

  101. Is serving God a waste of time?

  102. There are some that say yes.

  103. There are many that say no.

  104. Is there really a distinction between the righteous and the wicked?

  105. Some say yes.

  106. Others say no.

  107. And verses 13 to 16, they raise those questions.

  108. And we're going to try and answer that question this morning.

  109. And the short answer is, there's point number one, there is a distinction.

  110. There is a distinction.

  111. Verse 17 sees God responding to the faithful group of verse 16.

  112. And this is what he says.

  113. Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another,

  114. and the Lord paid attention and heard them.

  115. And a book of remembrance was written before him,

  116. of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name.

  117. They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts.

  118. In the day when I take up my treasured possession, my jewels,

  119. and I will spare them, these people who fear me,

  120. I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.

  121. And God is saying that their future will be shaped by compassion.

  122. They will be part of God's treasured possession.

  123. If you remember back to the start of the book, chapter 1, verse 6 of Malachi,

  124. God's complaint against Israel was that they weren't treating him as a father or a master.

  125. But here we find people who are treating God properly.

  126. And they serve him as their master, and they are his sons.

  127. And so God says they will be spared.

  128. The implication, of course, is that some won't be spared.

  129. Because there's a day of wrath coming.

  130. And on that day there will be those who are spared and those who are not spared.

  131. And that is the great distinction, the dividing line.

  132. Look at verse 18 with me.

  133. Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked,

  134. between one who serves God and one who does not.

  135. And chapter 4 flushes that distinction out.

  136. Chapter 4, verse 1,

  137. For behold, behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven,

  138. when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be like stubble.

  139. That's the future we all have to face.

  140. Those that arrogantly stand against God, instead of honouring him, will suffer punishment.

  141. God's fire will burn and leave them as stubble.

  142. The evildoers will receive justice.

  143. You can see, can't you, how directly this answers the complaints of chapter 2, verse 17,

  144. and chapter 3, verse 15.

  145. Where is the God of justice?

  146. Well, all who do evil,

  147. all who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, it seems.

  148. And certainly the evil do us prosper.

  149. And the answer is no, no.

  150. They will be like stubble, says the Lord Almighty.

  151. The fire of God's anger will burn against them and they will be ruined.

  152. But the future that the righteous face is different, isn't it?

  153. Look at verse 2.

  154. But for you who fear my name,

  155. the sun of righteousness will rise

  156. with healing in its wings

  157. and you will go out leaping like calves from the stall.

  158. Leaping like calves from the stall.

  159. It's bizarre imagery, isn't it?

  160. God wants you to imagine this morning

  161. a sun with wings

  162. and jumping baby cows.

  163. They are very stark pictures, aren't they?

  164. But the meaning is clear.

  165. Instead of the fire of God's anger

  166. that the wicked will face,

  167. the righteous will face

  168. the brilliance and the warmth

  169. of God's righteousness.

  170. Rising like the sun.

  171. And that sun will bring healing and peace

  172. instead of anger and disaster.

  173. God will make his people

  174. whole

  175. and their righteousness will be met

  176. with a far greater righteousness

  177. of God himself.

  178. and they will be

  179. exhilarated.

  180. There will be joy

  181. and there will be freedom.

  182. They will run

  183. and jump around the fields

  184. like baby cows.

  185. Try to think

  186. of a similar metaphor.

  187. I've tried to think of

  188. an illustration that goes along that.

  189. Who runs around

  190. and jumps around like baby cows?

  191. And the description

  192. reminds me

  193. of the kind of

  194. inhibited celebration

  195. of footballers

  196. after they score.

  197. Last week,

  198. Toto Scalacci.

  199. Do you remember him?

  200. Salvatore Scalacci

  201. in the Italian 90

  202. when he scored?

  203. And there's these amazing images

  204. of wide, wide eyes

  205. of him running

  206. to an adoring crowd.

  207. You know what it's like,

  208. isn't it,

  209. when footballers score?

  210. Grown men running around

  211. like school kids.

  212. Some of them

  213. pulling their shirt

  214. over their heads,

  215. screaming at the camera,

  216. kissing the corner post,

  217. diving on the ground

  218. over each other.

  219. It's this kind of

  220. uninhibited celebration

  221. that's being described here.

  222. Or think of the runner,

  223. the sprinter

  224. in the Olympics

  225. who crosses the line first.

  226. What does he do?

  227. Does he stop

  228. and just shake hands

  229. with everyone?

  230. No, he doesn't, does he?

  231. He skips around.

  232. He celebrates.

  233. He dances.

  234. And it's saying here

  235. that the righteous

  236. servants of God

  237. will be like a calf

  238. that's been held back

  239. and hemmed in by its stall

  240. and suddenly it's released

  241. to frolic in the field.

  242. It's like a footballer

  243. scoring a goal

  244. in the last minute.

  245. It's like a 100 metre runner

  246. winning the Olympics.

  247. Irrepressible joy.

  248. Wild celebrations.

  249. And the order of things

  250. will be reversed.

  251. Because in this life

  252. the wicked

  253. often trample

  254. the righteous

  255. under their feet.

  256. But God says

  257. when his day arrives

  258. it will be different.

  259. Justice will be

  260. the vindication

  261. of the righteous

  262. and the humiliation

  263. of the wicked.

  264. There is a day

  265. coming when the tables

  266. will turn.

  267. That's what verse 3 says

  268. isn't it?

  269. Verse 3

  270. you shall tread

  271. down the wicked

  272. for they will be ashes

  273. under the soles

  274. of your feet

  275. and on that day

  276. I will act

  277. says the Lord of hers.

  278. Can you again see

  279. the foolish claims

  280. of verse 14 and 15

  281. of God's people

  282. saying it's a waste of time

  283. are being answered.

  284. God says no

  285. there is a day coming

  286. when the reward of God

  287. for the righteous

  288. will far outweigh

  289. all the sacrifice

  290. and there is a day coming

  291. when the horror

  292. of God's anger

  293. will cause the wicked

  294. to deeply regret

  295. every day

  296. of their so-called fun.

  297. When they lived

  298. with no regard for God.

  299. But point number two

  300. when?

  301. When will this happen?

  302. When will this distinction

  303. take place?

  304. Well according to

  305. chapter 3 verse 17

  306. we will see it

  307. on the day when God

  308. takes up his

  309. treasured possession.

  310. Chapter 4 verse 1

  311. refers to the same day

  312. and simply says

  313. it's coming.

  314. And chapter 4

  315. verses 5 and 6

  316. tell us what will

  317. happen before that day.

  318. Verse 5

  319. Behold

  320. I will send you

  321. Elijah the prophet

  322. before the great

  323. and awesome

  324. day of the Lord

  325. comes

  326. and he will turn

  327. the hearts of the

  328. fathers to their

  329. children

  330. the hearts of

  331. children to their

  332. fathers

  333. lest I come

  334. and strike the land

  335. with a decree

  336. of utter destruction.

  337. He tells you and I

  338. that Elijah will come

  339. before the day of the

  340. Lord.

  341. What does that mean?

  342. Well it's really the

  343. same pattern as

  344. chapter 3 verse 1

  345. there we learn that

  346. the Lord

  347. would come to bring

  348. justice but his

  349. messenger would prepare

  350. the way first.

  351. It's the same thing

  352. here.

  353. We read Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  354. chapter 11

  355. a couple of weeks

  356. ago that tells us

  357. that the messenger

  358. this Elijah figure is

  359. none other than John

  360. the Baptist.

  361. Let me read to you

  362. from Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  363. chapter 11

  364. Jesus says this

  365. Behold I send my

  366. messenger before your

  367. face who will prepare

  368. the way before you

  369. He's talking about

  370. John the Baptist

  371. Truly I say to you

  372. among those born of

  373. woman there is arisen

  374. no one greater than

  375. John the Baptist

  376. yet the one who's

  377. least in the kingdom

  378. of heaven is greater

  379. than he.

  380. From the days of

  381. John the Baptist

  382. until now the kingdom

  383. of heaven has

  384. suffered violence

  385. and the violent

  386. take it by force.

  387. For all the prophets

  388. and the law

  389. prophesied it

  390. until John

  391. and if you're

  392. willing to accept

  393. it he is

  394. Elijah

  395. who is to come.

  396. So John the

  397. Baptist is the

  398. Elijah figure

  399. that Malachi is

  400. talking about.

  401. Jesus is really

  402. clear about that.

  403. Elijah in many

  404. ways was the most

  405. famous of all the

  406. Old Testament

  407. prophets and this

  408. is simply Malachi's

  409. way of pointing to

  410. John the Baptist

  411. as the last

  412. great prophet

  413. to come before

  414. Jesus.

  415. He'll be the

  416. last prophet

  417. before Jesus

  418. himself comes

  419. before the

  420. Lord arrives.

  421. This final

  422. section of Malachi

  423. right at the end

  424. of the Old

  425. Testament is

  426. pointing us

  427. forward to

  428. Jesus Christ.

  429. He's saying

  430. it's with Jesus

  431. that this day

  432. comes.

  433. And when Jesus

  434. comes he will

  435. tell us more

  436. about when that

  437. day will be.

  438. And so you

  439. go to Matthew's

  440. Gospel and

  441. Jesus tells

  442. parables doesn't

  443. he about the

  444. kingdom of

  445. heaven.

  446. You might be

  447. familiar with

  448. this parable

  449. where Jesus

  450. says the

  451. kingdom of

  452. heaven it's

  453. like a net.

  454. A net that's

  455. let down into

  456. a lake and it

  457. catches all kind

  458. of fish.

  459. And when it

  460. was full the

  461. fishermen pulled

  462. it up on the

  463. shore and then

  464. they sat down

  465. and they collected

  466. the good fish in

  467. baskets and they

  468. threw the bad

  469. away.

  470. Jesus says

  471. that's how it

  472. will be at

  473. the end of

  474. the age.

  475. The angels

  476. will come and

  477. they will

  478. separate the

  479. wicked from

  480. the righteous

  481. and they will

  482. throw them

  483. into a blazing

  484. furnace and

  485. they will be

  486. weeping and

  487. gnashing of

  488. teeth.

  489. Jesus uses

  490. the same

  491. language as

  492. Malachi uses.

  493. He speaks of

  494. the separation,

  495. the distinction

  496. between the

  497. righteous and

  498. the wicked.

  499. And he tells

  500. us when it

  501. will be.

  502. He says it

  503. will be at

  504. the end of

  505. the age.

  506. The justice

  507. that Jesus

  508. brings will

  509. ultimately come

  510. when he comes

  511. that second

  512. time to

  513. judge the

  514. world.

  515. It began

  516. when he came

  517. to earth the

  518. first time but

  519. the promises of

  520. Malachi 3 and

  521. 4 will

  522. ultimately be

  523. fulfilled when

  524. he returns.

  525. And of course

  526. the critical

  527. question is not

  528. actually when but

  529. point number

  530. three.

  531. The question

  532. is how?

  533. how is this

  534. distinction going

  535. to be made?

  536. How will this

  537. distinction be

  538. made between the

  539. righteous and

  540. the wicked?

  541. We know if

  542. we're honest with

  543. ourselves, isn't

  544. everyone wicked to

  545. some degree?

  546. if you're willing

  547. to be honest

  548. this morning, you

  549. will be willing

  550. to admit that

  551. you fall short

  552. of God's

  553. perfection.

  554. And so who

  555. can be

  556. righteous?

  557. Well in

  558. Malachi's day

  559. the righteous

  560. were described

  561. as those who

  562. honour God's

  563. name.

  564. Listen again to

  565. how Malachi puts

  566. it in chapter 16

  567. the second half.

  568. Then those who

  569. feared the Lord

  570. spoke with one

  571. another and the

  572. Lord paid

  573. attention and

  574. heard them and

  575. a book of

  576. remembrance was

  577. written before

  578. him of those

  579. who feared the

  580. Lord and

  581. honoured his

  582. name.

  583. Chapter 4

  584. verse 2

  585. But for you

  586. who fear my

  587. name the

  588. son of

  589. righteousness

  590. shall rise

  591. with healing

  592. in its wings.

  593. The New

  594. Testament and

  595. the coming of

  596. the Lord Jesus

  597. we are told

  598. more about

  599. what it means

  600. to honour

  601. the Lord.

  602. In that

  603. passage that

  604. Reuben read

  605. for us earlier

  606. from 2

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  607. Thessalonians

  608. chapter 1

  609. we read about

  610. the day when

  611. Jesus will

  612. return in

  613. blazing fire

  614. just as

  615. Malachi prophesied.

  616. The day when

  617. God's justice

  618. will be handed

  619. out.

  620. Just as

  621. Malachi said on

  622. that day it

  623. will be handed

  624. out.

  625. And the

  626. apostle Paul

  627. says that

  628. the wicked

  629. will be punished

  630. with everlasting

  631. destruction.

  632. But the

  633. crucial verses

  634. verse 8

  635. of 2

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  636. Thessalonians

  637. chapter 1

  638. let me read

  639. it to you.

  640. Chapter 8

  641. of 2

  642. Thessalonians

  643. 1

  644. Paul wrote

  645. this

  646. he will

  647. that is the

  648. Lord Jesus

  649. in flaming

  650. fire

  651. inflict vengeance

  652. on those who

  653. do not know

  654. God

  655. and on those

  656. who do not

  657. obey the

  658. gospel

  659. of our

  660. Lord Jesus.

  661. What that

  662. helps you and I

  663. understand is

  664. what does it

  665. mean to honour

  666. God's name

  667. it means to

  668. obey the

  669. gospel of our

  670. Lord Jesus

  671. Christ.

  672. The great

  673. distinction on

  674. that final day

  675. will be how

  676. each one of us

  677. has responded

  678. to the good

  679. news of our

  680. Lord Jesus

  681. Christ.

  682. That's the

  683. critical issue

  684. because only

  685. Jesus has

  686. opened up a

  687. way for the

  688. wicked

  689. to become

  690. righteous.

  691. For sinners

  692. like you and

  693. I to be

  694. made right

  695. with God.

  696. Only Jesus

  697. has felt the

  698. full force

  699. of God's

  700. terrifying

  701. wrath

  702. in order

  703. that you

  704. and I

  705. might not

  706. have to

  707. if we

  708. will trust

  709. in Jesus.

  710. Only Jesus

  711. has made

  712. that breathtaking

  713. sacrifice

  714. which is

  715. actually about

  716. others

  717. receiving God's

  718. reward.

  719. That is the

  720. gospel.

  721. That Jesus

  722. was made

  723. sin for

  724. us so

  725. that in

  726. him we

  727. might be

  728. made the

  729. righteousness

  730. of God.

  731. And it

  732. is that

  733. gospel that

  734. the Bible

  735. and the

  736. Apostle Paul

  737. calls you

  738. to obey.

  739. The gospel

  740. that teaches

  741. you and I

  742. that Jesus

  743. is both

  744. saviour

  745. and Lord

  746. and to

  747. obey that

  748. gospel is

  749. not kind of

  750. really try

  751. harder.

  752. It's not

  753. to think

  754. I've got

  755. to do

  756. my best.

  757. It is

  758. to take

  759. refuge in

  760. him as

  761. your only

  762. hope and

  763. obey him

  764. as Lord.

  765. Which means

  766. of course

  767. there's another

  768. question isn't

  769. there to be

  770. asked and

  771. it's in

  772. lots of

  773. ways the

  774. most crucial

  775. question of

  776. all.

  777. More

  778. important than

  779. even what

  780. basis will

  781. the distinction

  782. be made.

  783. but this

  784. question.

  785. Which will

  786. you be

  787. on that

  788. day?

  789. Will you

  790. be one

  791. of the

  792. wicked

  793. or will

  794. you be

  795. one of

  796. the

  797. righteous?

  798. Will you

  799. be one

  800. of those

  801. who have

  802. lived

  803. without the

  804. Lord Jesus

  805. Christ

  806. arrogantly

  807. thinking you

  808. don't need

  809. him?

  810. Or will

  811. you be

  812. someone who

  813. has obeyed

  814. the gospel

  815. of our

  816. Lord Jesus

  817. Christ?

  818. That call

  819. to repent

  820. and to

  821. trust in

  822. him?

  823. Will you

  824. be punished

  825. with everlasting

  826. destruction?

  827. Or will

  828. you be

  829. spared from

  830. it?

  831. Because the

  832. blood of

  833. Jesus Christ

  834. saves you.

  835. Malachi would

  836. put it like

  837. this if he was

  838. preaching.

  839. He would

  840. say will

  841. you be

  842. stubble

  843. or will

  844. you be

  845. one of

  846. the

  847. leaping

  848. calves?

  849. And the

  850. Bible's

  851. message is

  852. crystal clear.

  853. There's

  854. nothing more

  855. important for

  856. you to

  857. understand

  858. that you

  859. will be

  860. one or

  861. the other.

  862. We all

  863. this morning

  864. are one

  865. or the

  866. other.

  867. In fact

  868. you're one

  869. or the

  870. other right

  871. now.

  872. But the

  873. great news

  874. is not

  875. just what

  876. we are

  877. today that

  878. counts.

  879. There is

  880. still time.

  881. There is

  882. still time

  883. for you

  884. this morning

  885. if you

  886. have been

  887. ignoring

  888. Jesus as

  889. your saviour

  890. and as

  891. your Lord.

  892. There's

  893. time for

  894. you to

  895. change

  896. course.

  897. There's

  898. still

  899. opportunity

  900. for those

  901. who are

  902. heading for

  903. stubble

  904. to obey

  905. the gospel

  906. of the

  907. Lord Jesus

  908. and join

  909. with those

  910. who look

  911. forward to

  912. that

  913. uninhibited

  914. and exuberant

  915. calf-like

  916. freedom.

  917. there's

  918. still time

  919. because it

  920. is that

  921. day that

  922. ultimately

  923. counts.

  924. And what

  925. makes it

  926. so urgent

  927. is that

  928. we don't

  929. know when

  930. that day

  931. will be.

  932. It could

  933. be tomorrow.

  934. And so

  935. first and

  936. foremost

  937. before anything

  938. else today

  939. we need to

  940. be clear

  941. how have we

  942. responded to

  943. the gospel

  944. of the

  945. Lord Jesus.

  946. And if

  947. you're not

  948. clear how

  949. you've

  950. responded this

  951. morning

  952. make it a

  953. matter of

  954. urgency to

  955. get clear.

  956. I take it

  957. if we have

  958. understood this

  959. morning that

  960. we are the

  961. calves then

  962. we will do

  963. whatever we

  964. can won't we

  965. for others

  966. so that their

  967. future would be

  968. secure too.

  969. We would

  970. seek to

  971. lovingly

  972. persuade

  973. others to

  974. obey the

  975. gospel of

  976. our Lord

  977. Jesus Christ.

  978. You would

  979. want to say

  980. to others

  981. come and

  982. hear the

  983. gospel of

  984. the Lord

  985. Jesus.

  986. The Bible

  987. paints a

  988. very stark

  989. picture of

  990. the future.

  991. It's one

  992. that's very

  993. unpopular

  994. isn't it?

  995. In our age

  996. but it's

  997. always been

  998. unpopular.

  999. But the

  1000. Bible cuts

  1001. through our

  1002. cultures and

  1003. through Satan's

  1004. lies with a

  1005. clear word

  1006. about the

  1007. future.

  1008. And how

  1009. central Jesus

  1010. is.

  1011. The Bible

  1012. uses words

  1013. like hell

  1014. even if

  1015. they're very

  1016. very unpopular

  1017. today.

  1018. But what is

  1019. more even

  1020. those of us

  1021. who believe

  1022. it often

  1023. live day

  1024. to day

  1025. like that

  1026. reality is

  1027. worlds away.

  1028. being

  1029. and it is

  1030. that

  1031. which means

  1032. that we

  1033. sometimes

  1034. fall into

  1035. the trap

  1036. of being

  1037. living

  1038. thinking

  1039. like the

  1040. Israelites

  1041. did.

  1042. You see

  1043. if there

  1044. never was

  1045. going to be

  1046. a distinction

  1047. between the

  1048. righteous and

  1049. the wicked

  1050. then all of us

  1051. would agree

  1052. well it's

  1053. pointless

  1054. serving God.

  1055. Serving God

  1056. is a waste of

  1057. time.

  1058. But because

  1059. there is a

  1060. distinction

  1061. to be made

  1062. then serving

  1063. God makes

  1064. perfect sense.

  1065. And we may

  1066. not see that

  1067. distinction all

  1068. that clearly

  1069. now but we

  1070. have God's

  1071. clear promise.

  1072. And so we

  1073. trust that

  1074. promise and we

  1075. wait patiently

  1076. and we serve

  1077. God and we

  1078. serve God

  1079. knowing that

  1080. it's not a

  1081. waste of

  1082. time.

  1083. It's not a

  1084. waste of time

  1085. for you to

  1086. live as a

  1087. Christian today

  1088. even though

  1089. it's hard.

  1090. It's not a

  1091. waste of time

  1092. for you to

  1093. call unbelievers

  1094. to repent

  1095. even when they

  1096. seem totally

  1097. disinterested.

  1098. It's not a

  1099. waste of time

  1100. for you to

  1101. diligently and

  1102. persuasively lead

  1103. a Sunday

  1104. school class

  1105. and seek to

  1106. teach children

  1107. the Bible

  1108. or to do

  1109. the Bible

  1110. reading at

  1111. the language

  1112. class when

  1113. there seems

  1114. to be little

  1115. fruit.

  1116. It is not

  1117. futile

  1118. because the

  1119. day is

  1120. coming.

  1121. The day of

  1122. God's justice,

  1123. the day when

  1124. Jesus Christ,

  1125. the judge,

  1126. will issue

  1127. his verdict

  1128. and you

  1129. may be

  1130. stubble

  1131. or you

  1132. may be

  1133. like a

  1134. calf

  1135. released

  1136. from its

  1137. stall.

  1138. Either way,

  1139. how you

  1140. treat God

  1141. now

  1142. matters.

  1143. How you

  1144. respond to

  1145. Jesus

  1146. now

  1147. matters.

  1148. And so

  1149. we've come

  1150. to the

  1151. last two

  1152. words of

  1153. the Old

  1154. Testament.

  1155. After

  1156. these words

  1157. there was

  1158. 400 years

  1159. of silence.

  1160. Can you

  1161. see the

  1162. two words?

  1163. They're

  1164. curious to

  1165. say the

  1166. least,

  1167. aren't

  1168. they?

  1169. God's

  1170. parting

  1171. shot

  1172. ends with

  1173. utter

  1174. destruction.

  1175. there's

  1176. a reminder

  1177. in verse

  1178. 5,

  1179. verse 4

  1180. where God

  1181. reminds them

  1182. to obey

  1183. all the

  1184. laws

  1185. and Moses

  1186. and then

  1187. there's a

  1188. reminder that

  1189. this prophet

  1190. Elijah will

  1191. come before

  1192. the day

  1193. of the

  1194. Lord.

  1195. And

  1196. Malachi

  1197. says when

  1198. the day

  1199. comes,

  1200. people will

  1201. either repent

  1202. of their

  1203. sins

  1204. and renew

  1205. broken

  1206. relationships

  1207. or else

  1208. God will

  1209. come and

  1210. curse

  1211. them.

  1212. And very

  1213. cleverly,

  1214. what Malachi

  1215. has done

  1216. in these

  1217. last few

  1218. verses,

  1219. he's really

  1220. summarised

  1221. the whole

  1222. of God's

  1223. relationship

  1224. in the

  1225. Old

  1226. Testament

  1227. with his

  1228. people.

  1229. He's

  1230. reminded

  1231. them of

  1232. Moses and

  1233. the gift

  1234. of the

  1235. law.

  1236. He's

  1237. reminded

  1238. them of

  1239. Elijah and

  1240. all the

  1241. prophets.

  1242. And he's

  1243. reminding us

  1244. of the

  1245. chilling

  1246. reality of

  1247. sin.

  1248. And the

  1249. word really

  1250. at the

  1251. end of

  1252. Malachi,

  1253. if you've

  1254. got a

  1255. different

  1256. version,

  1257. is the

  1258. word

  1259. curse.

  1260. And what

  1261. Malachi is

  1262. doing is

  1263. he's taking

  1264. us right

  1265. back to

  1266. the beginning

  1267. of the

  1268. Bible,

  1269. to Adam

  1270. and Eve

  1271. and to

  1272. their sin

  1273. and the

  1274. curse of

  1275. God upon

  1276. humanity

  1277. because of

  1278. their

  1279. rebellion.

  1280. And that

  1281. curse has

  1282. hung over

  1283. God's

  1284. people ever

  1285. since that

  1286. time.

  1287. They've

  1288. not been

  1289. able to

  1290. shake

  1291. it.

  1292. And here

  1293. at the

  1294. end of

  1295. the

  1296. Old

  1297. Testament,

  1298. things

  1299. haven't

  1300. changed.

  1301. They're

  1302. still under

  1303. God's

  1304. curse.

  1305. Israel are

  1306. still full

  1307. of sin

  1308. and the

  1309. threat of

  1310. God's

  1311. curse still

  1312. hangs over

  1313. them.

  1314. And it

  1315. hangs over

  1316. them for

  1317. 400 years,

  1318. from the

  1319. end of

  1320. Malachi to

  1321. John the

  1322. Baptist.

  1323. But of

  1324. course,

  1325. the last

  1326. word of

  1327. the Old

  1328. Testament

  1329. is not

  1330. the last

  1331. word,

  1332. is it?

  1333. when

  1334. Jesus

  1335. stood on

  1336. that

  1337. mountain

  1338. of

  1339. transfiguration,

  1340. there were

  1341. two

  1342. people,

  1343. figures from

  1344. the Old

  1345. Testament,

  1346. that came

  1347. to talk

  1348. with him,

  1349. one Moses

  1350. and one

  1351. Elijah.

  1352. And it

  1353. was the

  1354. sign that

  1355. was saying

  1356. Jesus is

  1357. the one

  1358. that Moses

  1359. and Elijah

  1360. were looking

  1361. forward to.

  1362. And here

  1363. is the

  1364. one who

  1365. can remove

  1366. the curse

  1367. from over

  1368. Israel's

  1369. head.

  1370. And so

  1371. the last

  1372. word of

  1373. the Bible

  1374. is actually

  1375. Revelation 22.

  1376. Will you turn

  1377. there with

  1378. me?

  1379. Please turn

  1380. there,

  1381. Revelation 22.

  1382. And the

  1383. last word

  1384. of the

  1385. Bible

  1386. is that

  1387. there will

  1388. be justice.

  1389. Heaven

  1390. is a

  1391. wonderful

  1392. reality,

  1393. but not

  1394. everyone will

  1395. be there.

  1396. Look with

  1397. me at

  1398. chapter 22

  1399. in verse

  1400. 14.

  1401. Blessed are

  1402. those who

  1403. wash their

  1404. robes,

  1405. it's picture

  1406. language,

  1407. so that

  1408. they may

  1409. have the

  1410. right to

  1411. the tree

  1412. of life.

  1413. Remember

  1414. that from

  1415. Genesis 1

  1416. and 2?

  1417. And that

  1418. they may

  1419. enter the

  1420. city by

  1421. the gates.

  1422. Outside

  1423. are the

  1424. dogs and

  1425. idolaters and

  1426. everyone who

  1427. loves and

  1428. practices

  1429. falsehood.

  1430. That's the

  1431. great distinction.

  1432. Those who

  1433. have obeyed

  1434. the gospel

  1435. will be in

  1436. and those

  1437. who have

  1438. rejected or

  1439. ignored Jesus

  1440. will be out.

  1441. And for

  1442. those that

  1443. are there,

  1444. it's because

  1445. they will have

  1446. obeyed the

  1447. gospel of

  1448. Jesus Christ.

  1449. This is what

  1450. it will be

  1451. like.

  1452. Chapter 22

  1453. verse 1,

  1454. then the

  1455. angel showed

  1456. me the

  1457. river of

  1458. the water

  1459. of life,

  1460. clear as

  1461. crystal,

  1462. flowing from

  1463. the throne

  1464. of God

  1465. and of the

  1466. Lamb.

  1467. And in the

  1468. middle of the

  1469. street,

  1470. the city,

  1471. also on either

  1472. side of the

  1473. river,

  1474. the tree of

  1475. life,

  1476. with its

  1477. twelve

  1478. kind of

  1479. fruits,

  1480. yielding its

  1481. fruit each

  1482. month,

  1483. and the

  1484. leaves of

  1485. the tree

  1486. were for

  1487. the healing

  1488. of the

  1489. nations.

  1490. Listen to

  1491. the echoes

  1492. of Malachi

  1493. there,

  1494. the healing

  1495. of the

  1496. nations.

  1497. Because at

  1498. the end of

  1499. Revelation 22

  1500. there will be

  1501. no more

  1502. curse.

  1503. And for

  1504. those of

  1505. us who

  1506. have been

  1507. spared,

  1508. that is

  1509. our future.

  1510. And that

  1511. is God's

  1512. famous last

  1513. word,

  1514. no curse.

  1515. It's

  1516. brilliant.

  1517. It'll be

  1518. so brilliant

  1519. that all

  1520. our

  1521. obedience

  1522. and all

  1523. our

  1524. labour

  1525. will be

  1526. utterly,

  1527. utterly

  1528. worth it.

  1529. It will

  1530. be so

  1531. brilliant

  1532. that it

  1533. ought to

  1534. transform

  1535. our

  1536. priorities

  1537. for this

  1538. week.

  1539. And from

  1540. now on

  1541. until the

  1542. day we

  1543. die or

  1544. Jesus

  1545. comes

  1546. again.

  1547. It'll

  1548. be so

  1549. brilliant

  1550. that there

  1551. will be

  1552. people

  1553. just like

  1554. us who

  1555. will be

  1556. so filled

  1557. with

  1558. excitement

  1559. and

  1560. delight

  1561. and

  1562. overwhelming

  1563. happiness

  1564. that they

  1565. will be

  1566. like

  1567. calves

  1568. frolicking

  1569. in a

  1570. field,

  1571. footballers

  1572. scoring a

  1573. goal,

  1574. athletes

  1575. doing laps

  1576. of victory.

  1577. Malachi

  1578. says,

  1579. surely the

  1580. day is

  1581. coming,

  1582. it will

  1583. burn like

  1584. a furnace

  1585. and all

  1586. the

  1587. arrogant

  1588. and every

  1589. evil

  1590. doer

  1591. will be

  1592. stubble

  1593. and that

  1594. day is

  1595. coming and

  1596. it will

  1597. set them

  1598. on fire.

  1599. Not a

  1600. root or

  1601. a branch

  1602. will be

  1603. left of

  1604. them but

  1605. for you

  1606. who revere

  1607. my name

  1608. the sun

  1609. of

  1610. righteousness

  1611. will rise

  1612. with healing

  1613. in its

  1614. wings and

  1615. you will

  1616. go out

  1617. and leap

  1618. like calves

  1619. released from

  1620. the stall.

  1621. Let's pray.

  1622. Amen.
