  1. There we go. We've seen that there's an intermediate state after death, a state between the point of death and the return of Christ, where we exist in soul form.

  2. So our bodies remain on earth, but we go either to heaven, if you're a believer, hell, if you're an unbeliever, in soul form.

  3. And then everyone is resurrected after that, believer and unbeliever, and then it's the final state.

  4. And that's how eternity will be forever, never to change again.

  5. And for the believer, that's living in the new creation, in our physical, resurrected, perfected bodies.

  6. And for the unbeliever, it's eternity, body and soul in hell.

  7. And so we've been following this timeline, but we've skipped something, haven't we?

  8. Something critical. How do we get from this stage over here, this intermediate state or just life on earth, how do we get from this to the final state of new creation or hell?

  9. Well, today, we're coming to the missing gap in the middle.

  10. And we're going to find out what triggers all this final state.

  11. And we'll see it's the return of Christ and judgment day.

  12. That's our focus today.

  13. We're going to peer into the future and see what will happen to the world and to us and to the church and to all people when Christ returns.

  14. And the first thing to see is this.

  15. The return will mean the end of this age.

  16. So we're going to look at the first point today.

  17. The return means the end of this age.

  18. So cast your mind back a few weeks ago to our session on heaven.

  19. Where is Christ now?

  20. Christ is in heaven, isn't he?

  21. So in Acts 1, he ascended into the heavenly realm bodily.

  22. Do you remember?

  23. Where are my pens?

  24. There we go.

  25. You can see this at the bottom.

  26. So you remember God created all things.

  27. So this is going to be small.

  28. All things, all creation.

  29. And then you have heaven.

  30. It's one realm of creation.

  31. Hell is another.

  32. And then you just have the universe.

  33. That's the visible universe.

  34. All other things.

  35. That's where we live.

  36. And so Christ is in heaven right now.

  37. Bodily.

  38. He's ruling from there over all creation.

  39. He's growing his church.

  40. He's bringing his kingdom.

  41. He's sustaining atoms from this realm.

  42. And he's enthroned in heaven right now.

  43. But what is promised as soon as he ascends into heaven?

  44. Look at Acts 1 verse 11.

    Acts 1:11

  45. This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

  46. As soon as he goes, Jesus promises he will return to this earth.

  47. And when he does, the Bible tells us that his second coming, so remember his first is Christmas, right?

  48. That's his first coming.

  49. But his second coming, when he comes down from heaven, that will bring a close to this age.

  50. So look at what the disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 24.

  51. They're asking about the end times.

  52. What will be the sign of your coming and the close of this age?

  53. The Bible speaks of two ages.

  54. I've added to our diagram here.

  55. I hope it's not complicated, but it's just getting fuller.

  56. So the Bible speaks of two ages.

  57. History is split into two ages.

  58. This age and the age to come.

  59. And you hear that language a lot through the Bible.

  60. I've got some verses there, Matthew 12, Luke 18, Ephesians 1.

  61. You often hear this, this age and the age to come language.

  62. And the age to come refers to this final state.

  63. Can you see it matches up with this final state here?

  64. You have the age to come.

  65. This is how eternity will be.

  66. And so it's marked, for the believer, it's marked by perfection and eternal life.

  67. It's the new creation that this is the age to come.

  68. And so from now until that point, things run as they are.

  69. So life as we know it, which is, how is it marked?

  70. How is this life marked?

  71. It's marked by sin and death and opposition to God.

  72. Imperfection.

  73. We are in this age.

  74. Okay?

  75. So remember, even if you go to heaven or hell, that earth still continues.

  76. Life as we know it still continues.

  77. And all of that together, that is this age.

  78. And so because it's marked by sin, Paul calls it in Galatians 1, the present evil age.

  79. It's an evil age.

  80. And so this is how you can think of history.

  81. It's split into two parts.

  82. This age and the age to come.

  83. But what triggers the age to come?

  84. How do we get from this current present evil age to the age to come?

  85. Well, the Bible says it's the return of Christ that closes this age and begins the age to come.

  86. So look at these passages I've written, I've got there for you.

  87. Matthew 24.

  88. What will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?

  89. The second coming and the close of this age go together.

  90. They are one event together.

  91. And look at 2 Thessalonians 1.

  92. Christ's return marks the end of evil and persecution and injustice.

  93. And it's the point.

  94. It's the long-awaited relief for the church.

  95. And look at 2 Peter 3.

  96. The coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved,

  97. and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn.

  98. But according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

  99. Christ's return triggers the purification of this current creation.

  100. That's what the fire is referring to.

  101. It's not talking about being incinerated.

  102. It's talking about being purified.

  103. And his return, it marks the commencement and transformation, the beginning of the new creation.

  104. And look at 1 Corinthians 15.

  105. In Christ shall all be made alive.

  106. Remember, this is the resurrection.

  107. But each in his own order.

  108. Christ the firstfruits.

  109. Christ's return triggers the resurrection.

  110. At his second coming, we will all be raised from the dead.

  111. And so there is a point in history when something cataclysmic will happen to the universe and to life as we know it.

  112. Christ will return, bring a close to this age, wrap things up, and then he will begin the final state.

  113. History is wrapped up and a new history begins.

  114. A few mic checks.

  115. There we go.

  116. And what we need to realize is this will be a real physical event in history.

  117. So remember Acts 1 again.

  118. It's promised Jesus will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

  119. How did Jesus go up into heaven?

  120. He was taken up physically, wasn't he?

  121. He had a physical body visibly taken up.

  122. The disciples saw him.

  123. And he will return physically and visibly from the realm of heaven to this planet.

  124. That's why the language of this event is not only called the coming or the second coming, but it's also called his revealing or his appearing.

  125. There's a real emphasis in the Bible that this will be a public, visible event for every living creature to see.

  126. It's something they must see.

  127. And it will be an awesome sight.

  128. So just listen to 2 Thessalonians 1.

  129. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus,

  130. they will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.

  131. When he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints and to be marveled at among all who have believed.

  132. Although heaven itself, the realm of heaven, it isn't actually kind of in the clouds up there.

  133. He could well appear from the clouds above.

  134. 1 Thessalonians 4 says he's going to descend from the air.

  135. And he's going to come in all his glory.

  136. With his army of angels surrounding him.

  137. And he will visibly appear in the full revelation of his glory and power.

  138. It's Christmas time, isn't it?

  139. When Christ first came, how did he come?

  140. He came in a manger, didn't he?

  141. In all humility.

  142. His glory was veiled.

  143. You can look at that little baby in a manger, but you wouldn't be able to tell that, oh, this is the glorious king of the universe.

  144. But when he comes a second time, there is no veil.

  145. And there will be no doubt about his glory.

  146. And he could actually well be shining in his glory as he appears.

  147. And when he does it, he will raise the dead.

  148. Believer and unbeliever, do you remember last week, it's all will be raised from their graves.

  149. He will transform creation and bring an end to life as we know it.

  150. And so for the Christian, this is the day of relief for the church.

  151. This is the day when all our troubles and sorrows will end.

  152. And so it's what we're all longing for.

  153. This is the deep desire of the Christian for Christ to return.

  154. I mentioned this a few days ago in the Tuesday lunchtime service.

  155. So don't answer if you were there.

  156. But who knows what the final prayer in the Bible is?

  157. I'll give you a clue.

  158. It's Revelation 22.

  159. Last chapter of the Bible.

  160. Anyone know what the final prayer is?

  161. Come Lord Jesus.

  162. And that's no surprise.

  163. When Jesus comes, what happens?

  164. Sin ends.

  165. Bodies resurrected.

  166. Pain gone.

  167. Death wiped out.

  168. New creation begins.

  169. The Bible paints it as an awesome day.

  170. But it will be a wonderful day for the Christian.

  171. It's a day of Christian hope.

  172. History is heading somewhere, building up to something.

  173. And there is going to be a climax, a resolution, a finale.

  174. And it's this.

  175. It's the return of Christ.

  176. But let me ask, when will this be?

  177. We know this is to come.

  178. This is going to be an event in history.

  179. But when?

  180. Well, this is the second thing to see.

  181. The timing.

  182. The return.

  183. The timing.

  184. So when will this second coming be?

  185. Well, here's the answer.

  186. Write this down.

  187. We don't know.

  188. Okay.

  189. Right.

  190. Let's pray.

  191. No.

  192. We don't know.

  193. So look at these passages.

  194. Mark 13.

  195. But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows.

  196. Not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

  197. If you're going to ask, why not the Son?

  198. Come back in the summer.

  199. I'm going to do Sunday school on Christ.

  200. So we'll answer it there.

  201. Luke 12.

  202. The Son of Man is coming.

  203. And an hour you do not expect.

  204. Acts 1.

  205. It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.

  206. And the Bible repeatedly tells us that Jesus is going to come like a thief in the night.

  207. So think about that.

  208. What time does a thief break into a house in the night?

  209. What's the time?

  210. What time?

  211. You don't know, do you?

  212. That's the point.

  213. It's a surprise.

  214. It's sudden.

  215. It's something you can't predict.

  216. If it was, then the thief wouldn't come in, right?

  217. Just like the second coming.

  218. Now, the Bible does say that there will be signs and events in the build-up to the return.

  219. But we're going to get onto that next week.

  220. But even then, I'll give you a little sneak peek.

  221. Even then, even with then, we still don't know.

  222. We won't necessarily know if we're in those signs and events.

  223. And so we don't know.

  224. But we need to realise this.

  225. It is a real date.

  226. It's a coming event in history.

  227. So if you have an iPhone, probably any smartphone,

  228. if you have an iPhone, on your calendar,

  229. if you zoom out to the year,

  230. you can scroll down to the future years.

  231. And I once scrolled.

  232. I use my time really wisely.

  233. I once scrolled all the way to the year 5,000.

  234. Don't ask me how long that took.

  235. And I could have kept going.

  236. I think I just got a bit bored.

  237. You could have kept going.

  238. It's kind of built into the programme.

  239. Which means, if you think about it,

  240. in your iPhone,

  241. there is a date in your calendar app

  242. where you can click on add event

  243. and you can type in Christ return.

  244. And if I ask you to,

  245. do you want to repeat, just say no.

  246. You don't want to repeat that.

  247. So we don't know when,

  248. but it is real.

  249. It is coming.

  250. And that's why we should always live

  251. like it could come any moment.

  252. We should never think that we have time.

  253. Now is the time to repent.

  254. Don't delay anymore.

  255. But also,

  256. the return is going to trigger something else.

  257. It triggers the final state.

  258. But something must happen

  259. at the beginning of the final state.

  260. The return of Christ

  261. triggers judgment day.

  262. And this is the third thing to see.

  263. Judgment day.

  264. The return of Christ means judgment day.

  265. So when Christ returns,

  266. we've seen it's going to trigger the resurrection.

  267. And we know,

  268. think back to last week,

  269. we know that includes

  270. every single human being.

  271. It's the resurrection of the just

  272. and the unjust.

  273. But it will not be the case

  274. that people will be raised

  275. and instantly sent to hell

  276. or they can instantly run around

  277. in the new creation.

  278. No.

  279. At first,

  280. there will be judgment.

  281. And I want us to read Matthew 25.

  282. This is a key text

  283. about the return of Christ.

  284. Turn to Matthew 25,

    Matthew 25:31

  285. verse 31.

  286. We can't cover everything in this.

  287. But this is a really helpful insight

  288. into judgment day.

  289. Matthew 25,

  290. this will be 831

  291. of the church Bibles.

  292. Matthew 25,

  293. 31 to the end.

  294. This whole chapter

  295. is Jesus talking about

  296. the end of the age,

  297. the second coming.

  298. We get a peek

  299. into the final judgment here.

  300. So Matthew,

    Matthew 25:31

  301. chapter 25,

  302. verse 31.

  303. When the Son of Man

  304. comes in his glory

  305. and all the angels with him,

  306. then he will sit

  307. on his glorious throne.

  308. Before him will be gathered

  309. all the nations

  310. and he will separate people

  311. one from another

  312. as a shepherd separates

  313. the sheep from the goats

  314. and he will place

  315. the sheep on his right

  316. but the goats on his left.

  317. Then the king will say

  318. to those on his right,

  319. come you who are blessed

  320. by my father,

  321. inherit the kingdom

  322. prepared for you

  323. from the foundation

  324. of the world.

  325. For I was hungry

  326. and you gave me food.

  327. I was thirsty

  328. and you gave me drink.

  329. I was a stranger

  330. and you welcomed me.

  331. I was naked

  332. and you clothed me.

  333. I was sick

  334. and you visited me.

  335. I was in prison

  336. and you came to me.

  337. Then the righteous

  338. will answer him saying,

  339. Lord, when did we see you

  340. hungry and feed you

  341. or thirsty

  342. and give you drink?

  343. And when did we see you

  344. a stranger

  345. and welcome you

  346. or naked and clothe you?

  347. And when did we see you

  348. sick or in prison

  349. and visit you?

  350. And the king

  351. will answer them,

  352. Truly I say to you,

  353. as you did it

  354. to one of the least

  355. of these my brothers,

  356. you did it to me.

  357. Then he will say

  358. to those on his left,

  359. depart from me,

  360. you cursed,

  361. into the eternal fire

  362. prepared for the devil

  363. and his angels.

  364. For I was hungry

  365. and you gave me no food.

  366. I was thirsty

  367. and you gave me no drink.

  368. I was a stranger

  369. and you did not welcome me.

  370. Naked and you did not

  371. clothe me.

  372. Sick and in prison

  373. and you did not visit me.

  374. Then they also

  375. will answer saying,

  376. Lord, when did we see you

  377. hungry or thirsty

  378. or a stranger

  379. or naked or sick

  380. or in prison

  381. and did not minister to you?

  382. Then he will answer them

  383. saying,

  384. Truly I say to you,

  385. as you did not do it

  386. to one of the least of these.

  387. You did not do it to me.

  388. And these will go away

  389. into eternal punishment

  390. but the righteous

  391. into eternal life.

  392. I just want us

  393. to see a few things

  394. from this.

  395. The first is this.

  396. When Christ returns,

  397. he will raise up all humans,

  398. everyone that has ever lived,

  399. and he's going to gather us

  400. all together.

  401. Did you see that?

  402. Gather all the nations

  403. before him.

  404. And this could well be

  405. physically gathered

  406. into one place

  407. because we're going to be

  408. resurrected,

  409. standing in our resurrected bodies

  410. and seeing Christ

  411. visibly in front of us.

  412. We don't know exactly

  413. kind of how it will play out

  414. but whatever it looks like,

  415. every believer

  416. and unbeliever

  417. will be gathered

  418. in some way

  419. before him.

  420. And second,

  421. Christ will judge

  422. every human.

  423. Did you see?

  424. He will sort out

  425. who are the saved

  426. and who are the not saved.

  427. Those who are his sheep

  428. whom he loves

  429. and shepherds

  430. and laid his life down for,

  431. he's going to put

  432. to his right.

  433. And those who are the goat,

  434. who never knew him,

  435. who never belonged to him,

  436. who never loved him,

  437. he will put to his left.

  438. Those whose sins

  439. are forgiven

  440. by believing the gospel

  441. and those who rejected

  442. the gospel.

  443. He will judge

  444. by separating them.

  445. And this is why

  446. we say in the Apostles' Creed,

  447. but we're going to say it later,

  448. I believe in Jesus Christ

  449. that he shall come

  450. to judge the living

  451. and the dead.

  452. This is what we mean.

  453. It's this day,

  454. judgment day.

  455. And so he will publicly

  456. and openly announce

  457. who are the truly justified

  458. and who are the damned.

  459. And from there,

  460. he will bring every Christian

  461. into the eternal life

  462. of the new creation

  463. and every unbeliever

  464. he will send to hell.

  465. And it also seems like

  466. he's going to send demons

  467. and the devil

  468. to hell along with him,

  469. if you remember our session

  470. on hell.

  471. So look at Jude 6.

  472. And the angels

  473. who did not stay

  474. within their own position

  475. of authority

  476. but left their proper dwelling,

  477. he has kept

  478. in eternal chains

  479. under gloomy darkness,

  480. currently in hell,

  481. until the judgment

  482. of the great day.

  483. And so he's going to judge

  484. them on those days,

  485. on that day.

  486. And in Revelation 20,

  487. the devil was thrown

  488. into the lake of fire

  489. and suffered,

  490. tormented day and night

  491. forever and ever.

  492. So the devil

  493. and demons,

  494. fallen angels,

  495. are going to hell

  496. along with the unbeliever.

  497. And so when Christ returns,

  498. we need to realise

  499. that there will be

  500. a day of judgment

  501. and on that day

  502. all evil will be purged

  503. and wiped out

  504. from this creation.

  505. And so it's no wonder

  506. that this point

  507. of judgment day

  508. coincides with the beginning

  509. of the new creation.

  510. You need to destroy

  511. the germs

  512. in order to have

  513. a clean house,

  514. don't you?

  515. Well, you need judgment

  516. in order to have

  517. the new creation.

  518. Well, this is why,

  519. and this is why

  520. Christ's return,

  521. this is why

  522. it's our comfort.

  523. We know

  524. that we will be saved

  525. on that day

  526. and we know

  527. every wrong

  528. will be made right.

  529. Every sin

  530. and crime

  531. and evil

  532. that was done

  533. behind closed doors

  534. and no one

  535. ever knew about it.

  536. All those sins

  537. that never got punished

  538. in this life,

  539. all those crimes,

  540. all those unsolved mysteries,

  541. it will be judged.

  542. No sin

  543. will remain

  544. uncovered

  545. on that day.

  546. And for every

  547. injustice,

  548. we know

  549. for every injustice

  550. in this life

  551. that there will be

  552. final justice.

  553. And when is it?

  554. It's on this day.

  555. And the third thing

  556. we need to see

  557. is that this seems

  558. to all occur

  559. on a day.

  560. So the question

  561. of how long

  562. will this take?

  563. Well, this event

  564. is often referred

  565. to as a day.

  566. So you've got

  567. the day of judgment,

  568. Matthew 10,

  569. the great day

  570. of their wrath,

  571. Revelation 6,

  572. the coming

  573. of the day of God

  574. to Peter.

  575. Well, sometimes

  576. it's just called

  577. the day.

  578. 1 Corinthians 3.

  579. And so this could

  580. well occur

  581. within the span

  582. of a day,

  583. kind of an actual

  584. judgment day.

  585. But we're not

  586. entirely certain.

  587. Sometimes it's

  588. referred to as

  589. the hour of his return.

  590. So we're not

  591. entirely sure

  592. the exact length.

  593. But the impression

  594. we get is this,

  595. that the resurrection

  596. and judgment

  597. are linked together.

  598. They occur

  599. at the same time.

  600. And the judgment

  601. will be

  602. a climactic

  603. historical event.

  604. Not a

  605. drawn out

  606. process

  607. where some

  608. people kind of

  609. get judged

  610. first and then

  611. some run around

  612. the new creation

  613. but then they're

  614. brought back

  615. and then they

  616. have to go to hell.

  617. It's not going

  618. to be a process

  619. like that.

  620. No, judgment

  621. is the first

  622. thing that happens

  623. in the final state.

  624. And the fourth

  625. thing to see is

  626. that this will

  627. be public.

  628. Right now,

  629. the world

  630. doesn't know,

  631. doesn't acknowledge

  632. that Jesus is king.

  633. that they don't

  634. know that they

  635. should bow to him.

  636. We tell them

  637. in the gospel,

  638. we plead with them,

  639. but Jesus

  640. isn't acknowledged

  641. in this world.

  642. But on this day,

  643. when he returns

  644. and all the nations

  645. are gathered

  646. before him,

  647. everyone who

  648. mocked him

  649. or ignored him

  650. or persecuted him,

  651. they will see him

  652. face to face

  653. and they will

  654. finally realize

  655. who is king.

  656. Now,

  657. they won't

  658. worship him

  659. at that point

  660. but they will

  661. know

  662. who is the

  663. real king.

  664. And so,

  665. the return of Christ

  666. means judgment day.

  667. But what will

  668. that judgment

  669. be like?

  670. What will Christ

  671. say and do

  672. on that day?

  673. How will he

  674. judge these things?

  675. And what does it

  676. mean for the

  677. believer to be

  678. judged on that day?

  679. If Christ has

  680. already paid for

  681. our sins,

  682. if we're going

  683. to be resurrected

  684. along with the

  685. unbeliever and

  686. we're all going

  687. to stand before

  688. the judgment

  689. seat of Christ,

  690. what does that

  691. mean if our sins

  692. have already

  693. been paid for?

  694. Well,

  695. what we need

  696. to see next

  697. is this.

  698. Judgment day

  699. means that

  700. Christ will

  701. dish out

  702. different degrees

  703. of punishment

  704. and rewards.

  705. And I want

  706. to finish with

  707. this and we

  708. can stop for

  709. questions at

  710. the end.

  711. So,

  712. judgment and

  713. rewards.

  714. So,

  715. the language

  716. the Bible

  717. uses is that

  718. we will be

  719. judged,

  720. every human,

  721. believer and

  722. unbeliever,

  723. we will be

  724. judged according

  725. to our works.

  726. So,

  727. look at these

  728. verses.

  729. And before we

  730. dive into this,

  731. if you feel

  732. I'm heading in

  733. an uneasy

  734. direction,

  735. don't worry,

  736. I'm not going

  737. that way,

  738. let me assure

  739. you,

  740. your sins

  741. are paid

  742. for by

  743. Christ.

  744. The judgment's

  745. already been

  746. determined for

  747. you in Christ,

  748. okay?

  749. But I want us

  750. to see this,

  751. just let's see

  752. what the Bible

  753. says.

  754. So,

  755. Romans 2

    Romans 2:6

  756. verse 6,

  757. he will render

  758. to each one

  759. according to

  760. his works.

  761. 2 Corinthians

  762. 5,

  763. for we must

  764. all appear

  765. before the

  766. judgment seat

  767. of Christ,

  768. all of us,

  769. so that each

  770. one may receive

  771. what is due

  772. for what he

  773. has done

  774. in the body,

  775. whether good

  776. or evil.

  777. Romans 14,

  778. for we will

  779. all stand

  780. before the

  781. judgment seat

  782. of God,

  783. so then each

  784. of us will

  785. give an

  786. account of

  787. himself to

  788. God,

  789. an explanation

  790. for what we

  791. have done.

  792. And Revelation

  793. 20,

  794. I saw the

  795. dead,

  796. great and

  797. small,

  798. standing before

  799. the throne,

  800. and books

  801. were opened.

  802. Then another

  803. book was opened,

  804. which is the

  805. book of life,

  806. and the

  807. dead were

  808. judged by

  809. what was

  810. written in

  811. the books

  812. according to

  813. what they

  814. had done.

  815. Let's just

  816. see here that

  817. there is a

  818. link between

  819. what we have

  820. done in this

  821. life and

  822. how Christ

  823. will treat

  824. us on

  825. judgment

  826. day.

  827. So the

  828. books will

  829. be opened,

  830. this is the

  831. book of God's

  832. knowledge,

  833. right?

  834. God will

  835. recall everything

  836. we have

  837. done,

  838. every word,

  839. thought,

  840. deed,

  841. intention of

  842. our hearts.

  843. And we're

  844. going to be

  845. consciously aware

  846. of it because

  847. we will have

  848. to give an

  849. account,

  850. an explanation.

  851. We don't

  852. know how

  853. that will

  854. work,

  855. we can't

  856. really even

  857. guess,

  858. like is it

  859. going to be

  860. a video or

  861. are we just

  862. going to

  863. mentally

  864. recall it?

  865. We don't

  866. know,

  867. but this

  868. will happen.

  869. And Christ

  870. will treat

  871. us in a

  872. way linked

  873. to all that

  874. we have

  875. done,

  876. judged

  877. according

  878. to our

  879. works.

  880. Now,

  881. to see what

  882. this means,

  883. let's break

  884. this down.

  885. Let's just

  886. focus on the

  887. unbeliever

  888. first,

  889. okay?

  890. This means

  891. the more

  892. severe your

  893. sin,

  894. the worse

  895. the punishment

  896. you will

  897. experience in

  898. hell.

  899. Now,

  900. all sin

  901. deserves hell,

  902. even the

  903. smallest,

  904. slightest,

  905. but there

  906. seems to be

  907. different

  908. degrees of

  909. punishment in

  910. hell.

  911. So,

  912. Jesus even

  913. tells a

  914. parable

  915. about this,

  916. Luke 12,

  917. and that

  918. servant who

  919. knew his

  920. master's

  921. will,

  922. but did

  923. not get

  924. ready or

  925. act according

  926. to his

  927. will,

  928. will receive

  929. a severe

  930. beating.

  931. But the

  932. one who

  933. did not

  934. know and

  935. did what

  936. deserved a

  937. beating will

  938. receive a

  939. light beating.

  940. Everyone to

  941. whom much

  942. was given

  943. of him,

  944. much will

  945. be required,

  946. and from

  947. him to

  948. whom they

  949. entrusted

  950. much,

  951. they will

  952. demand the

  953. more.

  954. there seems

  955. to be a

  956. punishment in

  957. hell in

  958. accordance with

  959. someone's

  960. sins.

  961. So,

  962. the worst

  963. the sin,

  964. the worst

  965. the experience

  966. in hell.

  967. But also,

  968. there seems

  969. to be a

  970. link between

  971. knowledge of

  972. the gospel

  973. and the

  974. severity of

  975. the punishment.

  976. punishment.

  977. So,

  978. the one who

  979. knows the

  980. master's will,

  981. this is the

  982. gospel.

  983. In Matthew

  984. 13,

  985. when Jesus

  986. is talking

  987. about the

  988. parables,

  989. this knowledge,

  990. this responsibility,

  991. it's the

  992. gospel,

  993. essentially.

  994. So,

  995. the one who

  996. knows the

  997. master's will,

  998. the gospel,

  999. but ignores it,

  1000. will suffer more

  1001. than someone who

  1002. has never been

  1003. told the gospel.

  1004. Both sinners,

  1005. both guilty,

  1006. but different

  1007. degrees of

  1008. punishment.

  1009. which is a

  1010. sobering reality,

  1011. isn't it?

  1012. It should make

  1013. us all think,

  1014. okay,

  1015. now I know

  1016. the gospel,

  1017. what am I

  1018. going to do

  1019. with it?

  1020. But that's

  1021. Jesus' point

  1022. in these

  1023. parables.

  1024. And so,

  1025. if we try to

  1026. map it onto

  1027. this,

  1028. there's going to

  1029. be a temporary

  1030. punishment in

  1031. hell,

  1032. in the

  1033. intermediate

  1034. state,

  1035. but after

  1036. judgment,

  1037. there's going

  1038. to be full,

  1039. specific,

  1040. body,

  1041. and soul

  1042. punishment

  1043. according to

  1044. an unbeliever's

  1045. works.

  1046. Okay,

  1047. but what about

  1048. us?

  1049. What about

  1050. the church?

  1051. If we're going

  1052. to be a part

  1053. of this

  1054. judgment,

  1055. and we are

  1056. sinners,

  1057. what will that

  1058. mean for us?

  1059. Well,

  1060. it'll mean this,

  1061. and this is the

  1062. first thing,

  1063. and I really

  1064. want you to

  1065. remember this

  1066. one.

  1067. first,

  1068. when Christ

  1069. opens those

  1070. books on

  1071. that day,

  1072. our sins

  1073. won't be in

  1074. there.

  1075. They have

  1076. already been

  1077. written into

  1078. Christ's book

  1079. and already

  1080. judged on the

  1081. cross.

  1082. He remembers

  1083. our sin

  1084. no more.

  1085. There's no

  1086. condemnation.

  1087. We are

  1088. completely

  1089. covered in

  1090. Christ's

  1091. righteousness.

  1092. righteousness.

  1093. And so,

  1094. on that day,

  1095. our sins

  1096. will be

  1097. publicly

  1098. declared

  1099. forgiven.

  1100. The whole

  1101. world will

  1102. see that we

  1103. are justified,

  1104. but when

  1105. Christ moves

  1106. us to his

  1107. right hand

  1108. and calls

  1109. us his

  1110. sheep,

  1111. he will

  1112. say,

  1113. yes,

  1114. these are

  1115. the ones

  1116. I've

  1117. died for.

  1118. All their

  1119. sins are

  1120. covered.

  1121. They are

  1122. my sheep.

  1123. And so,

  1124. right now,

  1125. we already

  1126. know what

  1127. the outcome

  1128. of judgment

  1129. day is for

  1130. us.

  1131. There's no

  1132. doubt of

  1133. your salvation

  1134. on that day.

  1135. It will all

  1136. be because of

  1137. Christ,

  1138. his cross

  1139. and his

  1140. righteousness,

  1141. you will be

  1142. saved on

  1143. that day,

  1144. that there

  1145. is no

  1146. condemnation

  1147. now or

  1148. ever.

  1149. But at

  1150. the same

  1151. time,

  1152. we will

  1153. be judged

  1154. according to

  1155. our works,

  1156. but in a

  1157. good way.

  1158. Christ

  1159. will see

  1160. our good.

  1161. He will

  1162. see our

  1163. good Christian

  1164. works,

  1165. that the

  1166. love we had

  1167. for him,

  1168. the love

  1169. that we had

  1170. for each

  1171. other,

  1172. the fruit

  1173. of faith.

  1174. He will

  1175. see that

  1176. and he

  1177. will say

  1178. those works

  1179. show you

  1180. that you

  1181. are mine.

  1182. That's the

  1183. fruit of a

  1184. saved life.

  1185. All those

  1186. works,

  1187. that life

  1188. can only

  1189. come from

  1190. faith.

  1191. And so,

  1192. we won't be

  1193. saved because

  1194. we've done

  1195. good enough.

  1196. Christ won't

  1197. be like,

  1198. okay,

  1199. how much

  1200. good have

  1201. you done

  1202. in this

  1203. life?

  1204. Okay,

  1205. now you're

  1206. saved.

  1207. No,

  1208. we'll not

  1209. be like

  1210. that.

  1211. We're only

  1212. saved by the

  1213. blood of

  1214. Christ,

  1215. but our

  1216. works will

  1217. be evidence

  1218. in Christ's

  1219. scales to

  1220. show that we

  1221. are saved by

  1222. his righteousness,

  1223. not our

  1224. own.

  1225. But also,

  1226. it seems like

  1227. we will have

  1228. different rewards

  1229. in the new

  1230. creation.

  1231. I could

  1232. spend a lot

  1233. of time on

  1234. this,

  1235. but I'll

  1236. have to be

  1237. quite quick.

  1238. The parable

  1239. of the

  1240. miners in

  1241. Matthew 25

  1242. and the

  1243. parable of

  1244. the talents

  1245. in Luke

  1246. 19,

  1247. in both

  1248. these parables,

  1249. the servant

  1250. who is given

  1251. a lot and

  1252. does a lot

  1253. with it,

  1254. so given

  1255. God's will,

  1256. given the

  1257. gospel and

  1258. does a lot

  1259. with it,

  1260. is given a

  1261. greater reward

  1262. by their

  1263. master.

  1264. So one

  1265. servant gets

  1266. to rule

  1267. over five

  1268. cities,

  1269. but the

  1270. one who

  1271. did a lot

  1272. with what

  1273. the master

  1274. gave him,

  1275. they're going

  1276. to rule

  1277. over ten

  1278. cities.

  1279. And Galatians

  1280. 6 talks about

  1281. reaping what

  1282. we sow.

  1283. Our works

  1284. are going to

  1285. have a payoff

  1286. in the new

  1287. creation.

  1288. 1 Corinthians 15

  1289. talks about

  1290. different degrees

  1291. of glory.

  1292. And so in

  1293. the new

  1294. creation,

  1295. there seems

  1296. to be

  1297. different

  1298. degrees of

  1299. glory.

  1300. So let's

  1301. be clear,

  1302. everyone will

  1303. be glorious

  1304. and perfect,

  1305. but there

  1306. will be

  1307. different

  1308. rewards for

  1309. different

  1310. Christians

  1311. linked to

  1312. the fruitfulness

  1313. of their

  1314. life,

  1315. to what

  1316. they've done

  1317. with the

  1318. gospel that

  1319. they've been

  1320. given.

  1321. So think of

  1322. it like this

  1323. way,

  1324. we're all

  1325. going to

  1326. have full

  1327. cups in

  1328. the new

  1329. creation,

  1330. right?

  1331. If you

  1332. all have

  1333. a cup,

  1334. and when

  1335. it's full,

  1336. you're perfect,

  1337. you're joyful,

  1338. you are so

  1339. satisfied.

  1340. we're all

  1341. going to

  1342. have full

  1343. cups,

  1344. but everyone's

  1345. cup will be

  1346. a different

  1347. size.

  1348. We won't

  1349. feel lacking

  1350. in any way,

  1351. but it will

  1352. be different.

  1353. And we

  1354. don't know

  1355. what that

  1356. will look

  1357. like,

  1358. what that

  1359. degrees of

  1360. glory will

  1361. be like,

  1362. maybe ruling

  1363. over more or

  1364. less land in

  1365. the new

  1366. creation,

  1367. I don't

  1368. know,

  1369. maybe you

  1370. have a

  1371. house closer

  1372. to the throne

  1373. of God,

  1374. I don't know.

  1375. But it

  1376. does say

  1377. here,

  1378. your faithfulness

  1379. to Christ,

  1380. your faithfulness

  1381. to Christ,

  1382. it won't be

  1383. ignored on

  1384. that final

  1385. day.

  1386. Your

  1387. perseverance

  1388. and your

  1389. labours and

  1390. your sacrifices

  1391. for the

  1392. kingdom,

  1393. it won't

  1394. go unnoticed.

  1395. And it

  1396. may not be

  1397. the big

  1398. names of

  1399. the church

  1400. who are

  1401. going to

  1402. be rewarded

  1403. with those

  1404. great rewards

  1405. in heaven.

  1406. That

  1407. faithful

  1408. missionary

  1409. family from

  1410. the 19th

  1411. century,

  1412. who nobody's

  1413. heard of,

  1414. and their

  1415. ministry never

  1416. boomed,

  1417. and they

  1418. think that

  1419. they achieved

  1420. nothing in

  1421. this life,

  1422. but they

  1423. were so

  1424. faithful and

  1425. loving and

  1426. persevered and

  1427. went through

  1428. so much for

  1429. Christ and

  1430. lost so much

  1431. for him,

  1432. but loved him

  1433. all the way

  1434. through,

  1435. it's people

  1436. like that who

  1437. will probably

  1438. be given

  1439. much in the

  1440. new creation.

  1441. And let's

  1442. be clear,

  1443. this isn't

  1444. salvation by

  1445. works,

  1446. okay?

  1447. Even these

  1448. rewards are

  1449. by God's

  1450. grace.

  1451. God doesn't

  1452. need to bring

  1453. us into the

  1454. new creation,

  1455. and he certainly

  1456. doesn't need to

  1457. give us degrees

  1458. of glory,

  1459. no.

  1460. He doesn't

  1461. need to do

  1462. this.

  1463. And so think

  1464. of this,

  1465. this is an

  1466. encouragement for

  1467. us.

  1468. In the best

  1469. way possible,

  1470. our works will

  1471. follow us into

  1472. the new creation,

  1473. our sins will

  1474. be forgotten,

  1475. the old will

  1476. pass away,

  1477. but your

  1478. faithful

  1479. labours,

  1480. they will

  1481. be graciously

  1482. rewarded in

  1483. heaven.

  1484. And so this

  1485. life still

  1486. matters for

  1487. the Christian.

  1488. And on that

  1489. final day,

  1490. when Christ

  1491. moves us over

  1492. to his right

  1493. hand and

  1494. calls us his

  1495. sheep,

  1496. we will know

  1497. that we are

  1498. only standing

  1499. there because

  1500. Christ on the

  1501. cross won this

  1502. eternal life for

  1503. us.

  1504. and in

  1505. all his

  1506. grace,

  1507. he will say

  1508. to us the

  1509. words that we

  1510. all long for,

  1511. well done,

  1512. good and

  1513. faithful servants.

  1514. Welcome to

  1515. the new

  1516. creation.

  1517. I'll stop

  1518. there and

  1519. open up to

  1520. questions.

  1521. Thank you.
