  2. !

  3. To us in the experience of our lives and the realities that we face, we ask that you would

  4. do this for Jesus' sake.

  5. Amen.

  6. Well, we're all in search of a good life.

  7. That's what we want.

  8. That's what those of you that are younger and are looking ahead and thinking about universities

  9. and futures and careers, really the goal is a good life.

  10. You want to live well in the world.

  11. That's what politicians are always promising us.

  12. They say, if you vote for me, we will give you a good life.

  13. We will deliver the sorts of things that will give your life the sort of meaning and purpose

  14. and joy that you want.

  15. That's what Rachel Reeves thinks that this budget will deliver for British people.

  16. That's what Donald Trump ran on the promise of as he was elected this past week.

  17. He actually didn't just want to deliver the good life for American people, but the great

  18. life.

  19. We're told that a vote for him was a vote for a healthier, wealthier, safer America.

  20. And people voted for him because that's what they want.

  21. That is the great human quest, a life that goes well, a life that has purpose and that is

  22. imbued with joy and satisfaction, a life of flourishing.

  23. At one level or another, all of us make the choices we do, make the decisions that we do,

  24. because that's what we want.

  25. That's what we're searching for in this life.

  26. And Solomon has told us from the start of this really rather enigmatic book that he is just

  27. like us.

  28. Ecclesiastes chapter 2 verse 3,

    Ecclesiastes 2:3

  29. I searched with my heart till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under

  30. heaven during the few days of their life.

  31. I'm searching for the good life, he's saying.

  32. And we've seen he has searched and searched and searched.

  33. He's tried everything, he's told us.

  34. We've seen he looked, first of all, at the cycle of life.

  35. He thought maybe wisdom is the way to go, and so he searched out wisdom.

  36. And he's given himself to pleasure and wealth and hard work, and he has explored then whether

  37. honor and respect will deliver the joy and significance that he is seeking.

  38. He said, these things are the things that people tell us will deliver the good life.

  39. I am going to road test every single one of them.

  40. He's turned every stone that there is to turn, and we've seen that his conclusion has been

  41. consistent the whole way through.

  42. It's all vanity.

  43. All of it.

  44. It's all vapor.

  45. That's what the word translated vanity, meaningless in some translations.

  46. It's vapor, foggy vapor.

  47. He's saying there's nothing there.

  48. And the more that you grasp after it, the more you realize how thin the mist actually is.

  49. You know, sometimes when you get a heavy fog, you don't maybe get it so much in the city,

  50. anymore, but when you get a really heavy fog, and they call it a real pea super, because

  51. you can't see, and you feel like in a really heavy fog, almost like you could lean against

  52. it and it would hold you up.

  53. Well, what he's saying here, what Solomon is saying is that there is a mist.

  54. It doesn't hold you up.

  55. In fact, when you grasp after it, it is handfuls of vapor.

  56. It is fistfuls of nothing.

  57. And yet, there's been a drumbeat, hasn't there, the whole way through the letter that gives

  58. us hope that the search for the good life is not a vain search.

  59. Play on words.

  60. Chapter 2, verse 24, there is nothing better, he says, for a person than he should eat and

  61. drink and find enjoyment in his toil.

  62. Chapter 5, 18, behold, what I have seen to be good, okay, we're listening, good and fitting,

  63. is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun

  64. the few days of his life that God has given him.

  65. 8, 15, and I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and

  66. be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has

  67. given him under the sun.

  68. 9, verse 9, enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life that

  69. he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at

  70. which you toil under the sun.

  71. What is the good life, Solomon?

  72. Eat your food, drink your wine, and enjoy them.

  73. See, when you know, as the Christian does, that God is in complete control of absolutely

  74. everything in the world, that you have what you have because he has given it to you, that

  75. you don't have what you don't have because he has kept it from you, well, you can receive

  76. the gifts that he gives and you can say thank you and you can enjoy them.

  77. Gratitude and trust.

  78. Gratitude and trust.

  79. They are the two, they are the touchstone, you could say, of the whole Christian faith.

  80. Gratitude for what you have and trust God for what you don't have.

  81. Gratitude for the things that you enjoy and trust God for the things that are difficult

  82. and a struggle.

  83. Now, our temptation, of course, is to grasp, is to grasp after these things, to do that

  84. thing of trying to grab the things that Solomon has told us are vapor.

  85. We want to gain in some way.

  86. We want to advance ourselves.

  87. Use these things in order to secure our position.

  88. Make us the center of things.

  89. We go after these things hoping that they will be the means by which we can control our lives

  90. and we can deliver happiness.

  91. But that's not the life of faith.

  92. It's all a gift.

  93. And we are to receive what we have as such.

  94. And we're to be thankful.

  95. But you'll notice, you'll notice as we've gone through that it's not just eating and drinking

  96. that Solomon wants us to enjoy, but also something he calls toil.

  97. Each of those exhortations that I read for you that kind of are these little sound bites

  98. at different points as we go through the book, each one of those includes a call to enjoy our toil,

  99. our labor.

  100. Indeed, that is part of the programmatic verse I mentioned from chapter 2, verse 3.

  101. I searched with my heart till I could see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven

  102. during the few days of their life.

  103. And Solomon hasn't really expanded on what that to do means,

  104. of what the toil actually is,

  105. until Ecclesiastes chapter 11, 1 to 6.

    Ecclesiastes 11 chapter mention

  106. See, he's bringing the plane into land.

  107. And as his descent towards the conclusion of this book comes around,

  108. he tells us what the good of our toil should be.

  109. And it's a summary of how we are to live the good life.

  110. You could say it's a practical summary of the life of faith.

  111. And there are two elements.

  112. Point number one, he tells us,

  113. admit what you don't know.

  114. Admit what you don't know.

  115. Did you notice 11, 1 to 6, Solomon repeats that phrase.

  116. Verse 2, you know not.

  117. Verse 5, you do not know.

  118. You do not know.

  119. And again, verse 6, you do not know.

  120. There is so much about this life of which we are ignorant.

  121. Think about how limited our knowledge is,

  122. how little we know of ourselves,

  123. how little we know of other people.

  124. All the things we are ignorant about,

  125. how ignorant we are of the deep state,

  126. of God Himself.

  127. There are so many questions that we could ask one another.

  128. And the honest answer is,

  129. I don't know.

  130. But how often are we prepared to do that?

  131. We don't like doing that.

  132. We don't like recognizing

  133. that there are limits to our knowledge.

  134. Now, of course, if I was to ask you the question,

  135. do you know everything there is to know in the world,

  136. you would say, no, of course I don't.

  137. But then I ask you another question,

  138. and you don't know,

  139. but you give an opinion.

  140. Because it's really important

  141. that you're seen to have an opinion.

  142. But recognizing these limits

  143. is a vital part of true wisdom.

  144. That's what Solomon is saying.

  145. But 25 years ago,

  146. I knew a guy, and his name was Dave.

  147. But in our group of friends,

  148. he was known as,

  149. I know.

  150. In fact, back when I used to put

  151. people's nicknames in my phone,

  152. and when I put somebody's name in my phone,

  153. I put their nickname in,

  154. it came up, I know.

  155. Anytime anyone commented

  156. on something in conversation,

  157. they might have seen,

  158. they might have heard,

  159. quite apart from whether Dave was around or not,

  160. his response was always,

  161. I know.

  162. Or, I thought that.

  163. You say, I see they're closing the road

  164. for maintenance next week.

  165. I know.

  166. It became a running joke.

  167. In fact, we would invent things

  168. to get him just to say it.

  169. Scandalous things made up

  170. about celebrities,

  171. politicians, famous people.

  172. Did you see such and such

  173. has turned into a frog?

  174. I know.

  175. I saw that.

  176. The truth is,

  177. we can all be a bit like that

  178. in our own ways.

  179. We don't want to admit

  180. that we have limits

  181. to our understanding

  182. and our knowledge.

  183. And Solomon is clear here

  184. that whatever we do know,

  185. there are some things

  186. that are simply beyond us.

  187. There are some things

  188. that you can't know yourself

  189. and you can't Google

  190. to find the answer.

  191. And he highlights

  192. three very obvious areas.

  193. Verse 2,

  194. first of all,

  195. we are ignorant about the future.

  196. Give a portion to seven

  197. or even to eight,

  198. for you know not

  199. what disaster may happen

  200. on the earth.

  201. Now, we'll see in a minute

  202. he's talking about generosity here,

  203. and the reason

  204. that we should be generous people,

  205. he's saying,

  206. is because we don't actually know

  207. what lies in the future.

  208. Those poor people in Spain

  209. last week,

  210. their diaries were filled with plans.

  211. And those plans were washed away,

  212. literally,

  213. in the floods.

  214. You could leave here this evening

  215. and get home

  216. and get into bed

  217. as you expect to do,

  218. and I hope that does happen,

  219. or you could leave here,

  220. you could drop down

  221. with a heart attack,

  222. or you could be crossing the road

  223. and one of those maniacs

  224. on an electric scooter

  225. could take you out.

  226. It could be the end of your life.

  227. You could be,

  228. the rest of your life

  229. could be significantly different

  230. than you'd hoped.

  231. You don't know.

  232. All those things

  233. that are in your diary,

  234. will you get to attend

  235. those meetings?

  236. Will you get to go

  237. on those holidays?

  238. Will you get to make that call

  239. or see that person for lunch?

  240. You don't know.

  241. We're ignorant about the future.

  242. Solomon also says

  243. we're ignorant about the work of God.

  244. Verse 5,

  245. As you do not know

  246. the way the Spirit comes to the bones

  247. in the womb of a woman with child,

  248. so you do not know

  249. the work of God

  250. who makes everything.

  251. We know that life begins

  252. at conception.

  253. We know that a baby

  254. is formed in their mother's womb.

  255. We know that cells divide

  256. to form a hand over here

  257. and an eye over here.

  258. But we don't know

  259. how life is created.

  260. We don't know

  261. how these things happen.

  262. There are some things

  263. that only God,

  264. the maker of everything,

  265. knows.

  266. This was his point

  267. when he spoke

  268. to Job from the storm.

  269. Job 38,

  270. Have you comprehended

  271. the expanse of the earth?

  272. Asking it in a way

  273. as if to say,

  274. Well, of course you haven't.

  275. I'm the only one

  276. that's done that.

  277. Where is the way

  278. to the dwelling of light

  279. and where is the place

  280. of darkness?

  281. Only God knows those things.

  282. I often hear people

  283. say things like,

  284. Well, I believe God

  285. will do this

  286. or I believe God

  287. will do that.

  288. We've no idea.

  289. One of the big themes

  290. about the book of Ecclesiastes

  291. is some of what we were hearing

  292. this morning

  293. from Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  294. God is in complete

  295. sovereign control

  296. of absolutely

  297. every single detail

  298. of the world

  299. and we don't know

  300. why he works things out

  301. the way he does.

  302. We've no idea.

  303. Thirdly,

  304. we're ignorant

  305. about the outcome

  306. of our work.

  307. Solomon tells us,

  308. Verse 6,

  309. Work hard, we're told.

  310. Get the grades, we're told.

  311. Then you'll get the job,

  312. the good job that you'd like.

  313. Put the work in,

  314. in the good job,

  315. and then you'll be set.

  316. That's what we're told.

  317. You'll be set.

  318. Will you?

  319. Will you?

  320. You don't know.

  321. And just because it worked

  322. that way for other people

  323. is neither here nor there.

  324. We all know people

  325. who followed the right advice,

  326. did all the right things,

  327. and failed.

  328. I remember talking

  329. to an investor

  330. who wasn't a Christian,

  331. but he understood this.

  332. He'd been investing

  333. for many years

  334. and he said to me,

  335. I don't know why

  336. some businesses I've backed

  337. have flown

  338. and why others have flopped.

  339. I used the same criteria

  340. to decide.

  341. I only invest

  342. where I like the people,

  343. where the books were good,

  344. and where the product

  345. seemed like a good product.

  346. But one does well

  347. and the other fails.

  348. He said,

  349. it's a mystery.

  350. That is the wisdom

  351. of Ecclesiastes 11.

  352. Our pursuit,

  353. in our pursuit

  354. of the good life,

  355. wisdom requires us

  356. to admit what we don't know.

  357. It doesn't mean,

  358. of course,

  359. that we pursue ignorance.

  360. We're not trying

  361. to be stupid

  362. or that we consider

  363. not knowing.

  364. Like,

  365. some people,

  366. I think,

  367. maybe some Christians,

  368. think that ignorance

  369. is a virtue in some way.

  370. They can spiritualize it.

  371. Solomon is not saying

  372. that it is godly

  373. to be ignorant.

  374. Of course he's not.

  375. We should pursue knowledge

  376. and we should especially

  377. pursue knowledge of God.

  378. We should pursue

  379. the knowledge of God,

  380. which is a knowledge

  381. that we will never

  382. fully exhaust,

  383. but we should do it

  384. so that we know

  385. His ways better.

  386. But there will always

  387. be a white spot

  388. on the map

  389. when it comes

  390. to our understanding

  391. of God's providence.

  392. Admit what we don't know.

  393. But while we do that,

  394. while we admit our limits,

  395. Solomon doesn't want us

  396. just to sit on our hands.

  397. There is a positive toil

  398. that he wants us

  399. to lean into

  400. and to enjoy as well.

  401. So here's the second point.

  402. Act on what you do know.

  403. Act on what you do know.

  404. Solomon has told us

  405. that God is in complete

  406. sovereign control

  407. over every detail of life.

  408. He has repeatedly told us

  409. that we must live by faith

  410. in this reality

  411. if we will experience

  412. the joy that he keeps

  413. talking about.

  414. The question is,

  415. what does a life of faith

  416. actually look like?

  417. What does it involve?

  418. Well, again,

  419. we have three commitments.

  420. Verses 1 and 2,

  421. first of all,

  422. he commends to us

  423. risky generosity.

  424. Risky generosity.

  425. Cast your bread

  426. upon the waters

  427. for you will find it

  428. after many days.

  429. Give a portion to seven

  430. or even to eight.

  431. Casting your bread

  432. on the water

  433. sounds to me

  434. like quite a strange idiom.

  435. Conjures up images

  436. in my mind

  437. of feeding ducks

  438. in the park,

  439. throwing them some moldy crusts

  440. and watching them go soggy.

  441. So it's a bit strange.

  442. But what he's doing here

  443. is actually describing

  444. giving to other people

  445. and giving probably

  446. to those who are in need

  447. in some way.

  448. And he's saying,

  449. do that with great generosity.

  450. The number seven,

  451. you will know,

  452. is the biblical number

  453. of perfection.

  454. And he's saying

  455. that you should even

  456. go beyond that.

  457. He's kind of using hyperbole.

  458. Don't just go as far

  459. as you can.

  460. Go even further.

  461. He's saying,

  462. go to eight.

  463. It's a call

  464. to take risks

  465. as you invest

  466. in other people.

  467. It is a call

  468. to relinquish

  469. selfish control

  470. of your own life

  471. and your own possessions.

  472. He is saying

  473. the Christian

  474. is to live

  475. their life

  476. with open hands.

  477. Be generous

  478. with what you have.

  479. Remember,

  480. it's gift,

  481. not gain.

  482. Now,

  483. one of the interesting

  484. things about this

  485. is that he doesn't just say,

  486. go and be really,

  487. really generous.

  488. Do you notice?

  489. Cast your bread

  490. upon the waters

  491. for you will find it

  492. after many days.

  493. See,

  494. part of the reason

  495. that we live

  496. with open hands

  497. is because

  498. the casting

  499. brings a return.

  500. Cast your bread

  501. for you will find it.

  502. The Christian knows

  503. that to give to others,

  504. especially the needy,

  505. is actually

  506. to give

  507. to the Lord.

  508. Proverbs 19,

  509. whoever is generous

  510. to the poor

  511. lends to Yahweh,

  512. lends to God,

  513. and he will repay him

  514. for his deed.

  515. One commentator

  516. says this,

  517. Solomon is issuing

  518. a call to be

  519. boldly generous

  520. and lavishly good

  521. to our neighbors.

  522. This is the epitome

  523. of wisdom,

  524. even though it looks

  525. like a losing proposition.

  526. Wisdom does not

  527. walk by faith,

  528. but by sight.

  529. See what he's done there?

  530. That's the key

  531. to any generosity,

  532. you see.

  533. Do we trust God

  534. to keep his word?

  535. We could hear this

  536. sort of thing,

  537. you know,

  538. give to the poor

  539. and you will find it again

  540. after many days.

  541. You know,

  542. if I give a bit over here,

  543. well,

  544. I might get a bit more

  545. back over here.

  546. There are certain theologies

  547. that would espouse

  548. that kind of nonsense.

  549. we're not trying

  550. to make our generosity

  551. come back to us

  552. because that's not

  553. being generous.

  554. Nor is it the life

  555. of faith.

  556. It's the life

  557. of seeking to control

  558. God in some way

  559. which when we put it

  560. like that actually

  561. sounds like a life

  562. of folly,

  563. doesn't it?

  564. I am going to seek

  565. to pursue controlling God.

  566. That is the absolute

  567. epitome of madness.

  568. What he's saying here is

  569. we are to be generous

  570. in a way that feels risky

  571. but it is surrendered

  572. to the will

  573. and providence of God.

  574. Isn't that what Jesus said

  575. in Luke chapter 6?

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  576. Luke 6, 35,

  577. Do good and lend

  578. expecting nothing in return

  579. and your reward

  580. will be great

  581. and you will be sons

  582. of the Most High

  583. for He is kind

  584. to the ungrateful

  585. and the evil.

  586. Verse 38,

  587. Luke 6, 38,

  588. Give and it will be given

  589. to you good measure

  590. pressed down,

  591. shaken together,

  592. running over

  593. will be put into your lap

  594. for the measure you use

  595. it will be measured

  596. back to you.

  597. Those who are generous

  598. without any desire

  599. to gain themselves

  600. end up gaining

  601. because that's the way

  602. the upside down nature

  603. of the kingdom of God.

  604. Same principle

  605. of the Apostle Paul

  606. in 2 Corinthians 9,

  607. Whoever sows sparingly

  608. will also reap sparingly

  609. and whoever sows bountifully

  610. will also reap bountifully.

  611. Each one must give

  612. as he has decided

  613. in his heart

  614. not reluctantly

  615. or under compulsion

  616. for God loves

  617. a cheerful giver.

  618. Be generous

  619. and do it with a smile

  620. on your face

  621. he's saying.

  622. Risky,

  623. and the only way

  624. that's possible,

  625. risky generosity

  626. is only possible

  627. if it is kind of

  628. coming out

  629. of a confident faith.

  630. Faith that God

  631. is in complete control

  632. of our lives,

  633. that we have

  634. what we have

  635. and we don't have

  636. what we don't

  637. because of him.

  638. And it's a faith

  639. that he will keep

  640. his promise

  641. to provide

  642. and return

  643. our generosity

  644. with blessing.

  645. So what are you doing

  646. to be generous

  647. to others,

  648. especially those

  649. who are in need?

  650. One of the things

  651. I think we often do

  652. is we think to ourselves,

  653. well,

  654. I think if,

  655. I know I need

  656. to be generous

  657. and I'm really keen

  658. to do that,

  659. but I think it would

  660. be better

  661. if I waited

  662. until I was

  663. in a better place

  664. financially

  665. in order to be generous

  666. then, you know,

  667. when I get to that point

  668. then, well,

  669. I'll have that much

  670. in the bank

  671. and then I'll be able

  672. to do it.

  673. Now, each of us,

  674. of course,

  675. must give according

  676. to our means

  677. and according

  678. to our conscience,

  679. but we are supplied

  680. by God's abundance.

  681. So what we're really

  682. talking about here

  683. is faith.

  684. It is trusting God

  685. that we can be

  686. generous with

  687. whatever we have,

  688. however much it is,

  689. however much

  690. or however little,

  691. we can be generous

  692. with that,

  693. trusting that God

  694. will supply.

  695. You can be generous,

  696. you can even be

  697. extravagant

  698. in your generosity

  699. because you know

  700. that God is faithful

  701. and He has been

  702. abundantly generous

  703. to you.

  704. We heard this morning

  705. about being bold

  706. and not giving way

  707. to fear

  708. as it comes

  709. to living out

  710. our Christian life

  711. and speaking boldly

  712. about the Lord Jesus.

  713. That principle

  714. applies here as well.

  715. We should be bold

  716. in our faith

  717. in trusting God

  718. as we are generous.

  719. His word calls us

  720. to do that

  721. that He will supply.

  722. Risky generosity.

  723. Secondly,

  724. Solomon calls us

  725. to a realistic busyness.

  726. Verses 3 and 4,

  727. a realistic busyness.

  728. If the clouds

  729. are full of rain,

  730. they empty themselves

  731. on the earth

  732. and if a tree

  733. falls to the south

  734. or to the north

  735. in the place

  736. where the tree

  737. falls there,

  738. it will lie.

  739. He who observes

  740. the wind will not sow

  741. and he who regards

  742. the clouds

  743. will not reap.

  744. There are some things

  745. that are predictable

  746. in life,

  747. like when the clouds

  748. come in,

  749. we can assume

  750. that rain will follow

  751. and there are some things

  752. that are unpredictable

  753. like when and where

  754. a tree will fall

  755. in the forest.

  756. And Solomon is saying

  757. that's how it is

  758. in the world.

  759. We've got to be realistic

  760. about that.

  761. And that should change

  762. nothing about

  763. how hard we work.

  764. I had a quick visit

  765. to Belfast this week

  766. and when we came in

  767. to land in Belfast,

  768. it was grey and wet

  769. and the person

  770. on the front said,

  771. you know,

  772. welcome to Belfast.

  773. Well, I'm afraid

  774. that the rain

  775. has arrived

  776. just ahead of us.

  777. Of course it has.

  778. It's Northern Ireland.

  779. What did he expect?

  780. It's not the Bahamas.

  781. It's grey and wet

  782. all the time

  783. in Northern Ireland.

  784. And yet,

  785. the country is full of people

  786. who still fire

  787. into their work

  788. every day regardless.

  789. Solomon's saying,

  790. don't look out the window

  791. and say,

  792. well, it looks like rain today.

  793. I don't think I'm going to work.

  794. Oh, it's a bit bluey.

  795. We can't work today.

  796. He's saying,

  797. work hard.

  798. Be busy in the things

  799. that God has given you to do.

  800. That includes the generosity

  801. that Solomon has just mentioned

  802. because another thing

  803. that Solomon is getting at here

  804. with this kind of

  805. looking at the wind

  806. and, you know,

  807. holding back

  808. from actually getting stuck

  809. into your work

  810. because you're looking

  811. at the weather

  812. and wondering,

  813. will it work out

  814. and everything else?

  815. He's saying,

  816. look,

  817. don't be anxious

  818. about that

  819. when it comes

  820. to generosity either.

  821. Remember,

  822. don't fear

  823. that you're going

  824. to be left short

  825. in some way.

  826. Get on with being generous

  827. as well as everything else.

  828. He's saying,

  829. waiting for the point

  830. at which you can read

  831. the way the wind is blowing

  832. and therefore can then

  833. live without risks

  834. or,

  835. to put it another way,

  836. to live without

  837. having to trust God

  838. because that's the opposite,

  839. isn't it,

  840. of the life of faith.

  841. He's saying,

  842. that's not the call

  843. for the Christian.

  844. Get after what it is

  845. that you're supposed to do,

  846. whatever the weather.

  847. Metaphorically

  848. and actually.

  849. If you're waiting

  850. for a fair wind

  851. in your life

  852. and whatever kind of

  853. call the Lord

  854. has put on your life,

  855. if you're waiting for that,

  856. you'll never get anything done.

  857. Some days,

  858. we've got to go

  859. and graft in the rain

  860. and push against the wind

  861. and some days,

  862. it is a bit easier.

  863. But he's saying,

  864. look,

  865. you've got to be realistic.

  866. This is the world

  867. we live in.

  868. Let's get busy anyway

  869. about the things

  870. that God has given us to do.

  871. The third element

  872. of enjoyable toil.

  873. First is risky generosity.

  874. The second is realistic busyness.

  875. And the third,

  876. he says,

  877. reasonable diversity.

  878. Five to six.

  879. Reasonable diversity.

  880. In the morning,

  881. sow your seed

  882. and at evening,

  883. withhold not your hand

  884. for you do not know

  885. which will prosper,

  886. this or that,

  887. or whether both alike

  888. will be good.

  889. Sowing seed,

  890. on the one hand,

  891. withholding not your hand.

  892. Those are two different

  893. pursuits actually.

  894. One is this,

  895. the other is that.

  896. Solomon is making that clear.

  897. So what he's really saying here

  898. is you think about your life,

  899. as you think about

  900. the things that you

  901. throw yourself into,

  902. don't put all your eggs

  903. into the one basket.

  904. We might call it

  905. pursuing a diverse portfolio.

  906. Not necessarily just

  907. financial investments,

  908. but just develop a side hustle

  909. in your work.

  910. Seek to find ways

  911. to be productive.

  912. Work hard.

  913. You don't know

  914. what might come of it.

  915. You don't know

  916. what God might do

  917. with your efforts.

  918. There are lots of good things

  919. that you could

  920. throw yourself into.

  921. Now, of course,

  922. those things have to

  923. kind of take their place

  924. among the priorities

  925. that you have,

  926. the commitments

  927. that you have.

  928. But he's saying,

  929. get after it.

  930. What he's doing,

  931. actually,

  932. is pressing us

  933. to do the very opposite

  934. of what we might think

  935. or what we might be

  936. tempted to think

  937. in this world of Hevel,

  938. this world of vapor.

  939. See, you might think,

  940. if everything is vapor,

  941. well, there's no point

  942. working hard.

  943. But what he's saying here

  944. is actually,

  945. vapor is a motivation.

  946. It's kind of counterintuitive.

  947. Our ignorance

  948. and lack of control

  949. that he's just emphasized,

  950. alongside the possibility

  951. of disaster,

  952. verse 2,

  953. you do not know

  954. what disaster may happen

  955. on the earth.

  956. So, these are a couple

  957. of really significant realities.

  958. We don't know loads of stuff.

  959. We don't have any control

  960. over the world

  961. in which we live.

  962. Disasters do happen

  963. in this world,

  964. and we might be tempted

  965. to think to ourselves,

  966. you know what,

  967. I'm going to lock the doors,

  968. I'm going to stay at home,

  969. I'm going to try and just

  970. be as safe as I possibly can.

  971. And he's saying,

  972. no, the opposite is true.

  973. Get after it,

  974. work hard,

  975. hustle,

  976. give generously,

  977. and serve others,

  978. and trust all the while

  979. the outcome to God.

  980. That's the good life.

  981. That is,

  982. Solomon's words,

  983. what is good

  984. for the children of man

  985. to do under heaven

  986. the few days of our lives.

  987. Admit what you don't know,

  988. and act on what you do

  989. with a generosity

  990. and a busyness

  991. that is all the time

  992. submitted to God,

  993. trusting the outcome

  994. to him.

  995. The question we have is,

  996. well, does this actually work?

  997. Can we actually really

  998. call this the good life?

  999. You see, it's a vision

1000. of life that's quite different

  1001. from what we're given

1002. in other places, isn't it?

  1003. Our culture wouldn't call

  1004. that the good life.

1005. So we need to define

1006. what we mean by the good life,

  1007. because the truth

  1008. of the matter is,

  1009. this was the life

  1010. that was embodied

  1011. by the Lord Jesus.

1012. The one who is the way,

  1013. the truth,

  1014. and the life.

  1015. The Lord Jesus lived

1016. a life of absolute generosity,

  1017. giving, giving,

  1018. and giving again,

  1019. trusting his Father

  1020. with the outcome.

  1021. In his humanity,

  1022. Jesus was subject

1023. to the vapor of this life

  1024. just as we are.

  1025. In his humanity,

  1026. he didn't know exactly

1027. how every twist and turn

  1028. of his story

1029. was going to work out,

  1030. but he pressed on.

  1031. Remember,

1032. he wrestled with his Father

1033. in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  1034. In that moment,

  1035. he was anxious about,

  1036. you could say,

  1037. casting his bread

  1038. upon the waters.

  1039. In this case,

1040. that bread was his body,

  1041. the bread of life.

1042. But he gave it over,

  1043. not my will,

  1044. but yours be done.

  1045. He gave it over

  1046. as he surrendered

  1047. to the cross,

  1048. and in doing so,

  1049. he purchased life

  1050. for the world.

1051. How did it go for him

  1052. and then,

  1053. after that,

  1054. well,

  1055. three days later,

  1056. he was vindicated

  1057. as the Father

1058. raised him from the dead

  1059. and ushered him in

  1060. to resurrection life.

  1061. Solomon's wisdom

  1062. was embodied

1063. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1064. So,

1065. it's not just wise advice

  1066. for us,

1067. but it has been confirmed

  1068. as the path

  1069. that actually brings life

  1070. that is truly life.

  1071. It's the path

  1072. to resurrection glory.

  1073. So,

  1074. that is why

  1075. when Jesus tells us

1076. to take up our cross

  1077. and follow him,

  1078. to embrace

  1079. the generous pattern

  1080. of life,

1081. the pattern of my life

  1082. for yours,

  1083. which is essentially

  1084. the banner

  1085. over all of this,

1086. that's the way of toil

  1087. in Ecclesiastes 11.

  1088. When he calls us

  1089. to do that,

  1090. we should lean in.

  1091. We should trust him.

1092. We should live by faith

  1093. because we know

  1094. that actually,

  1095. in the end,

1096. the return is worth it.

  1097. See,

  1098. that's where this

  1099. all lands for us.

  1100. In the end,

  1101. when we embrace

  1102. this pattern of life,

  1103. when we say,

  1104. I don't know this,

  1105. but I'm trusting you,

  1106. and when we say,

1107. I'm going to lean in

1108. to what you've called me

1109. to do in a pattern

  1110. of generous service,

  1111. we're following

  1112. the example

  1113. of the Lord Jesus,

  1114. but we do that

  1115. confidently,

  1116. full of faith,

  1117. because we know

  1118. that is the path

  1119. to resurrection glory.

  1120. That's the path

  1121. of life.

  1122. That's the good life.

  1123. Let's pray.

  1124. Let's pray.

  1125. Let's pray.
