  1. If you turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 1 and Matthew chapter 1, keep a finger in both.

Luke 1 chapter mention Matthew 1 chapter mention

  2. I might be reading this book, The Virgin Birth of Christ by Gresham Maitin, I will speak on it next year.

  3. It's a brilliant work, it's nearly 100 years old. It's a brilliant work, it's pretty dry stuff.

  4. Mary Maitin, who's Gresham's mother, wrote to him and said,

  5. your book, Gresham, is not one to read when groggy with sleep.

  6. Which is a great, when your mother is saying that about the book.

  7. So don't rush on Amazon and buy it.

  8. But actually I find it really, really helpful and what I want to try and do is condense this into 25 minutes.

  9. And you will know that there's not an original bone in my body and so what is helpful, a lot of that comes from Gresham Maitin.

  10. And we say those words, don't we, again and again and again.

  11. Yet how often do we think, even at Christmas time, of that wonderful truth, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.

  12. I want to begin by saying that the Bible sets the mission of Christ Jesus and his ministry in the world between two supernatural events, two supernatural bookends.

  13. One supernatural event by which he entered into the world and the other by which he left it, his resurrection.

  14. The first is his virgin conception, his supernatural birth.

  15. And the second is his bodily resurrection and his ascension to the right hand of God.

  16. Both are supernatural, aren't they?

  17. In the way that he came and in the way that he left.

  18. And both are given in fulfilment of prophecy.

  19. So in Matthew chapter 1, it tells us this happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  20. And Matthew quotes Isaiah 7.

  21. The virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call him Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  22. The resurrection, the exit miracle, again it's the fulfilment of lots of Old Testament prophecies.

  23. You could take Isaiah 53, verse 10.

    Isaiah 53:10

  24. He shall prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

  25. And so both of these events, his resurrection and his ascension, and his virgin conception, carry with them, don't they, the same message.

  26. The Lord Jesus Christ is not less than man, but he is certainly more than man.

  27. They underline his supernatural nature, his deity.

  28. The virgin birth is unambiguously supernatural.

  29. You cannot misinterpret the virgin birth.

  30. What you have to say tonight is either I believe it, or I don't believe it.

  31. The virgin birth, it's thrust like a stumbling block.

  32. Like a test.

  33. Right at the beginning of the Gospels, Donal MacLeod says this,

  34. The revelation of God has placed the stumbling block of the virgin birth to offend and to test us.

  35. To ascertain whether we are prepared to do justice to Jesus' uniqueness,

  36. and to the inability of human wisdom to know him,

  37. and to the utter discontinuity between him and all else that could conceivably explain him.

  38. Here at the right of the start of the Gospel,

  39. God sets before us this biblical, attested truth that Jesus entered into the world by supernatural conception.

  40. Three things tonight.

  41. First of all, the biblical evidence for the virgin birth.

  42. Does the Bible really teach this?

  43. And then secondly, I want to talk just about some common objections to it.

  44. And then thirdly, I want to talk about two implications and the relevance of it.

  45. The biblical evidence.

  46. It's in Matthew 1 and Luke 1.

  47. And the two focuses of those genealogies,

  48. and Ruben didn't do well in reading their list of names.

  49. The first of them, Matthew, focuses on Joseph's story.

  50. The second focuses on Mary's story.

  51. They are separate and independent accounts,

  52. and yet strikingly harmonious.

  53. Most people think that Luke was closely allied to the Apostle Paul,

  54. and much of Luke's theology comes from the Apostle Paul,

  55. who calls him the beloved physician, the beloved doctor.

  56. But it is significant.

  57. The Luke, right at the start of his gospel,

  58. if you look there in Luke 1, verse 1,

    Luke 1:1

  59. he's a careful historian.

  60. Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative

  61. of the things that have been accomplished among us,

  62. just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word

  63. have delivered them to us,

  64. it seemed good to me,

  65. also, having followed all things closely for some time past,

  66. to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

  67. that you may have, what's the purpose of Luke's writing?

  68. That you may have certainty concerning the things that have been taught.

  69. And so the virgin birth is recorded as sober history.

  70. He's a careful historian,

  71. he's a qualified physician,

  72. and Luke sets out the virgin birth as sober history.

  73. The account Matthew gives us sets out the account of Joseph,

  74. the heartache of Joseph in many ways.

  75. He's betrothed to be married to Mary,

  76. and she turns out to be with child before.

  77. So if you go to Matthew 1, verse 18,

    Matthew 1:18

  78. she's found to be with child before they come together.

  79. And immediately Matthew says,

  80. this conception was by the Holy Spirit,

  81. verse 18.

  82. It's important to realise, isn't it,

  83. that betrothal is not the same as engagement.

  84. Engagements can be broken,

  85. but a betrothal could only be broken by a legal divorce.

  86. And that's why we go on to read that Joseph comes to the conclusion, doesn't he,

  87. that she has been unfaithful to him, Mary.

  88. There's heartbreak there.

  89. She was bound to him in the same way as a wife is to her husband,

  90. and her husband Joseph,

  91. being a just man,

  92. unwilling to put out a shame,

  93. he resolves to divorce her quietly.

  94. He clearly thought, didn't he, Joseph,

  95. that Mary had been unfaithful.

  96. But to him then,

  97. the angel of God appears to him

  98. and interprets the situation in a completely different light.

  99. Look at verse 20.

  100. But as he considered these things,

  101. Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,

  102. saying, Joseph, son of David,

  103. do not fear to take Mary as your wife,

  104. for that which is conceived in her

  105. is from the Holy Spirit.

  106. Supernatural conception.

  107. You'll notice, won't you,

  108. that Jesus' birth is natural.

  109. His conception is supernatural.

  110. And the messenger of the Holy Spirit of God,

  111. he interprets that as the Spirit of God at work

  112. to fulfill the promise of Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14.

    Isaiah 7:14

  113. So verse 20 again,

  114. Joseph, son of David,

  115. do not fear,

  116. so it marries her wife,

  117. for that which is conceived in her

  118. is from the Holy Spirit.

  119. She will bear a son.

  120. You shall call his name Jesus,

  121. for he will save his people from their sins.

  122. And all this took place,

  123. why did it take place?

  124. Verse 22,

  125. to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  126. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

  127. and they shall call his name Emmanuel.

  128. Now, some people have suggested

  129. that perhaps the word in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  130. and verse 14,

  131. the word virgin,

  132. it may mean young woman.

  133. It doesn't strictly mean virgin.

  134. But that actually isn't the case.

  135. The overwhelming balance of probability of the word

  136. is that it is,

  137. the word is that of a virgin,

  138. somebody who's not had sexual intercourse.

  139. But for those of us who believe the Bible tonight,

  140. when you come to Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  141. what you discover is, again,

  142. when the angel comes this time to Mary,

  143. Mary is greatly troubled, isn't it,

  144. in verse 30.

  145. Can you see why?

  146. I do not be afraid, Mary,

  147. verse 30 of chapter 1,

  148. Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  149. for you found favor with God,

  150. and behold,

  151. you will conceive in your womb

  152. and bear a son,

  153. and you'll call his name Jesus.

  154. He'll be great,

  155. he'll be called son of the Most High,

  156. and the Lord God will give to him

  157. the throne of his father David.

  158. He'll reign over the house of Jacob forever,

  159. and of his kingdom there'll be no end.

  160. That is the announcement

  161. of the angel to Mary.

  162. Now, can you see what Mary's response is?

  163. This is the key thing.

  164. Verse 23.

  165. Verse 33.

  166. And Mary said to the angel,

  167. how will this be?

  168. Since I'm a virgin.

  169. She's saying, isn't she,

  170. the reason why this is such a mystery

  171. is I've never known a man.

  172. I've never had that kind of union.

  173. She's describing herself, isn't she,

  174. in the clearest possible terms as a virgin.

  175. And so whatever the ambiguities are

  176. of Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  177. there's no ambiguity in Mary's mind.

  178. She says, I am a virgin.

  179. So the New Testament sets these facts before us

  180. and presents us a virgin birth.

  181. It is an account, isn't it,

  182. of supernatural conception.

  183. The real issue that the virgin birth

  184. presents us with is not a biological

  185. or a philosophical issue.

  186. It is an issue of the authority of the Bible.

  187. If I live and think under the authority

  188. of the Bible,

  189. the virgin birth is a clear part

  190. of the teaching of the Bible.

  191. And I believe it.

  192. And so you either accept the Scripture

  193. or you do not accept the Scripture.

  194. But you cannot deny that Scripture clearly teaches it.

  195. So let's look, secondly,

  196. at the common objections to this.

  197. The first objection is it's a biological absurdity,

  198. isn't it?

  199. The virgin conception.

  200. Of course it's an absurdity.

  201. So,

  202. is the resurrection of Jesus as well,

  203. isn't it?

  204. Biology is no more sympathetic

  205. to a dead body being raised

  206. than it is to a virgin conceiving.

  207. And the problem people have is not with science,

  208. but with the supernatural.

  209. Do I believe the supernatural possibility

  210. of God raising the dead?

  211. Well, if I do,

  212. then the virgin conception

  213. is in the same category.

  214. If God is able to enter

  215. into the whole realm

  216. of the working of his created order

  217. and to produce such phenomenon,

  218. miraculously bringing into being

  219. the Lord Jesus Christ

  220. in a virgin's womb.

  221. It's a question of whether I'm willing,

  222. again,

  223. to believe the Scriptures.

  224. The other objection is

  225. that this makes Jesus

  226. less than fully human.

  227. It's more of a doctrinal objection,

  228. isn't it?

  229. You might say,

  230. well,

  231. it affirms his deity.

  232. You might say the virgin birth

  233. protects his godness.

  234. The whole issue of the supernatural entry

  235. of Jesus into the world.

  236. And it protects his deity,

  237. but it detracts from his humanity.

  238. To be truly human,

  239. doesn't Jesus have to be procreated

  240. in exactly the same way as we are?

  241. And the Bible's answer to that is no.

  242. Why is it no?

  243. It's no because Adam,

  244. Adam was not formed as we are.

  245. Adam was not formed as we are,

  246. and yet he was truly human.

  247. Adam was not procreated as we are,

  248. and yet we acknowledge his full humanity.

  249. And God has so ordered

  250. that if Adam's creation was different to ours,

  251. here the creation of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  252. the last Adam,

  253. the appearance of Jesus as a man,

  254. was accomplished by a miracle

  255. in the same way that Adam appeared.

  256. Adam is the prototype

  257. of one who has a supernatural origin.

  258. Here's the third objection,

  259. and I think the one I've probably heard most of.

  260. The rest of the New Testament

  261. scarcely mentions it.

  262. The rest of the New Testament

  263. scarcely mentions

  264. the virgin conception.

  265. It's here in Matthew 1 and Luke 1.

  266. But the rest of the New Testament

  267. is by and large

  268. silent about the virgin birth of Jesus.

  269. Matthew and Luke mention it at his birth,

  270. which is, isn't it,

  271. the natural place to talk about it,

  272. but neither of them mention it again.

  273. But that doesn't mean, does it,

  274. that they regarded it as unimportant.

  275. Its significance lies precisely

  276. in the area as the entry miracle

  277. by which Jesus came into the world.

  278. And this argument from partial silence

  279. is a really dangerous one

  280. because you'll know that neither Mark nor John

  281. say anything about Jesus' birth.

  282. But does that mean that it's unimportant?

  283. It simply means, doesn't it,

  284. there's a focus and a concentration here.

  285. Elsewhere, the virgin birth

  286. was not a matter of controversy.

  287. That is one of the reasons

  288. that it doesn't occur

  289. in the rest of the Bible.

  290. But one of the very significant things

  291. is that here,

  292. by the time these books

  293. are being written around 60 AD,

  294. the virgin birth is being affirmed

  295. by Luke,

  296. who'd received his training

  297. under the Apostle Paul.

  298. And when you come to the early church,

  299. the very earliest creeds of the church,

  300. one of the primary things that is affirmed

  301. is that the Lord Jesus was born

  302. of the Virgin Mary.

  303. So let me add here

  304. that the deity of Jesus Christ

  305. and his divine human nature

  306. are revealed truths.

  307. That is who Jesus was.

  308. It's not a truth

  309. to which the mind of men and women

  310. have unaided access to.

  311. It is a revealed truth

  312. and God has revealed the truth

  313. of the deity of the Lord Jesus

  314. partly through the miracle

  315. of the virgin birth.

  316. He's saying that

  317. in the virgin birth

  318. there is a new beginning.

  319. The living God

  320. is beginning a new humanity

  321. and he's beginning it

  322. with one who is fully God

  323. and fully man.

  324. I think this is illustrated later on.

  325. So Matthew chapter 16,

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  326. the issue of Peter's confession

  327. in Caesarea Philippi.

  328. Who do you say that I am,

  329. Jesus says.

  330. Who do you say that I am?

  331. And they say,

  332. well some say you're God's spokesman,

  333. you're like a prophet.

  334. Some say you're a holy man,

  335. I'm like Elijah.

  336. Others say various things.

  337. But who do you say that I am,

  338. Jesus says.

  339. And here's the confession of faith

  340. in Jesus as the son of God

  341. and the Messiah.

  342. You are the Christ,

  343. the son of the living God.

  344. And Jesus says to Simon Peter,

  345. he says,

  346. blessed Simon,

  347. son of John,

  348. because flesh and blood

  349. has not revealed this to you,

  350. but my father.

  351. The revelation of Jesus

  352. is in his person,

  353. is supernaturally given.

  354. And it is given to us

  355. in part here

  356. in the virgin conception

  357. of Jesus.

  358. And so you cannot defend

  359. the virgin birth.

  360. No one gives evangelistic talks

  361. to students

  362. defending the virgin birth,

  363. do they?

  364. But what do we do?

  365. We proclaim it.

  366. We proclaim it.

  367. Here's the third thing.

  368. First of all,

  369. the biblical evidence.

  370. Secondly,

  371. the objections.

  372. Thirdly,

  373. what are the relevance to us?

  374. Why is it relevant to us tonight?

  375. First of all,

  376. it's related to the sinlessness

  377. of Jesus.

  378. When Jesus came

  379. to offer himself to God,

  380. he offered himself

  381. as the fulfillment

  382. of the perfect Lamb of God.

  383. Do you remember

  384. John the Baptist

  385. sees him behold

  386. the Lamb of God?

  387. He is a Lamb

  388. and without spot

  389. and without blemish.

  390. He himself

  391. bore no sin

  392. so that he might

  393. bear our sin.

  394. He had no sin

  395. of his own

  396. to atone for

  397. and so he was free

  398. and able

  399. to atone

  400. for our sin.

  401. The sinlessness

  402. of Jesus

  403. is so important.

  404. The virgin birth

  405. does not prove

  406. the sinlessness

  407. of Jesus

  408. but it's certainly

  409. related to it.

  410. What the Bible teaches

  411. is that we are not

  412. isolated individuals.

  413. Whether we like it

  414. or not,

  415. we belong to humanity.

  416. We are members

  417. of a union

  418. and Adam

  419. the first man

  420. he is the head

  421. of that union.

  422. And the Bible teaches

  423. that in Adam

  424. all those who are

  425. connected to Adam

  426. are brought down

  427. in our sin.

  428. You watch,

  429. well I hope you don't

  430. watch Eurovision

  431. but you watch Eurovision

  432. isn't it?

  433. And they will say

  434. the different countries

  435. go around voting

  436. isn't it?

  437. And they will say

  438. Great Britain

  439. gives,

  440. I don't know,

  441. six points.

  442. and all of

  443. Great Britain

  444. is counted

  445. by that one person's vote.

  446. By that one person's vote.

  447. They carry millions

  448. of votes

  449. in their one vote.

  450. And Adam,

  451. he is the head,

  452. it is his vote,

  453. he is the federal head

  454. of the old order.

  455. He is the head

  456. of the old humanity

  457. and he brought us down

  458. by his act of rebellion

  459. and we are involved

  460. in that.

  461. It's not just

  462. the things we do,

  463. it's what we are,

  464. isn't it?

  465. The twist in our nature

  466. that all of us

  467. know so well.

  468. The crookedness,

  469. the tendency

  470. in our heart

  471. that turns us

  472. towards sin.

  473. But what God

  474. is doing here

  475. in this new creation

  476. is that God

  477. has brought forth

  478. the Lord Jesus Christ

  479. and he calls him

  480. 1 Corinthians 15

  481. the last Adam

  482. to be the head

  483. of a new humanity.

  484. And so as in Adam

  485. all die,

  486. so in Christ

  487. all are made alive.

  488. And it is in union,

  489. being connected,

  490. trusting,

  491. by faith in the Lord

  492. Jesus Christ

  493. that we find

  494. newness of life now.

  495. The line of sin

  496. goes right through

  497. the old order

  498. until,

  499. until the conception

  500. and birth of Jesus.

  501. And by setting aside

  502. man as the procreator,

  503. God is saying,

  504. here is a new humanity.

  505. Here is a new humanity

  506. and the head

  507. of that new humanity,

  508. the Lord Jesus,

  509. is offering himself

  510. without spot to God.

  511. The virgin conception

  512. of the Lord Jesus

  513. marks a break

  514. in the transmission

  515. of sin.

  516. To be fully human,

  517. Jesus was born

  518. of a woman.

  519. We saw it this morning,

  520. Galatians 4,

  521. didn't we?

  522. Born of a woman,

  523. born under the law

  524. to be sinless

  525. in his humanity.

  526. He was born

  527. of a virgin woman,

  528. not a sinless woman,

  529. but a virgin woman.

  530. And so the virgin conception

  531. helps us in

  532. that it is related

  533. to the sinlessness

  534. of Jesus.

  535. Jerry Packer says this,

  536. in the virgin

  537. born Christ,

  538. in the virgin birth,

  539. Christ did not inherit

  540. the guilty twist

  541. called original sin.

  542. His manhood

  543. was untainted

  544. by it.

  545. So it relates

  546. to Jesus'

  547. sinlessness.

  548. Second thing is this,

  549. the last thing is this,

  550. it's related

  551. to the saving

  552. initiative of God.

  553. It's related

  554. to the saving

  555. initiative of God.

  556. It's God

  557. who's acting here.

  558. an ordinary

  559. conception,

  560. an ordinary birth

  561. of Jesus,

  562. if it was like

  563. our conception

  564. and birth,

  565. would have meant

  566. that the initiative

  567. in Christ,

  568. the saving

  569. appearance

  570. in the world,

  571. lay with man.

  572. man.

  573. But here,

  574. what is God

  575. doing

  576. in the virgin

  577. birth?

  578. What is God

  579. doing in the virgin

  580. birth?

  581. He is setting

  582. man aside.

  583. He's doing it

  584. resolutely

  585. and he's doing it

  586. deliberately.

  587. He is putting

  588. man aside

  589. and saying

  590. from that

  591. line,

  592. from the line

  593. of Adam,

  594. there is no hope

  595. for man's

  596. salvation.

  597. And so he

  598. brings by

  599. supernatural means

  600. the last Adam.

  601. The last Adam

  602. comes onto the

  603. field as the

  604. firstborn of the

  605. new creation

  606. and he sets

  607. man aside.

  608. and in his

  609. place stands

  610. the God

  611. man,

  612. Christ Jesus.

  613. And that is

  614. the message

  615. of the virgin

  616. birth.

  617. What he's

  618. saying in the

  619. virgin conception

  620. is that salvation

  621. will never ever

  622. flow from

  623. man's initiative.

  624. By searching

  625. and by seeking,

  626. you will never

  627. by yourself

  628. unaided

  629. come to God.

  630. By working

  631. hard,

  632. by laboring,

  633. by attempts

  634. to do things

  635. that will

  636. satisfy God,

  637. you will never

  638. find acceptance

  639. with him.

  640. And the virgin

  641. conception and

  642. supernatural

  643. appearance of

  644. Jesus Christ

  645. tell us that

  646. it is God

  647. that takes

  648. the initiative.

  649. It is God

  650. who has to

  651. provide a

  652. divine saviour.

  653. Not a human

  654. saviour,

  655. but a divine

  656. saviour,

  657. the God

  658. man.

  659. One of the

  660. messages,

  661. surely,

  662. is that you

  663. will never

  664. find salvation

  665. from man,

  666. but you

  667. will find it

  668. from the

  669. God of the

  670. Bible who

  671. sent his

  672. only begotten

  673. son into

  674. the world,

  675. born of a

  676. virgin,

  677. to declare

  678. that salvation

  679. is all of

  680. God.

  681. And salvation

  682. is all of

  683. grace.

  684. And salvation

  685. is all in

  686. Christ.

  687. Christ.

  688. And that

  689. is the

  690. message of

  691. Christianity,

  692. isn't it?

  693. Certainly the

  694. message of

  695. Christmas.

  696. All of

  697. God,

  698. all of

  699. grace,

  700. all in

  701. Christ.

  702. And so the

  703. choice that's

  704. before every

  705. single one of

  706. us tonight,

  707. the choice

  708. that the

  709. virgin

  710. conception

  711. presents you

  712. with is

  713. either a

  714. Jesus who

  715. is supernatural,

  716. and sinless,

  717. and God

  718. saviour,

  719. or a

  720. Jesus who

  721. is something

  722. less,

  723. and something

  724. not.

  725. Let's pray.

  726. Amen.
