  1. In 1966, John Lennon said this, quote, Christianity will go.

  2. ! It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that. I'm right and I will be proved right.

  3. ! End quote. Here we are at the start of a new year, almost 60 years on, and in some ways,

  4. it feels like John Lennon's prophecy was just about right.

  5. What we've witnessed recently, over the passing of the time since he said that,

  6. is a steady rejection of Christian morality, laws that have been consistently passed that

  7. flatly reject the law of God, and this year, over the last couple of years really, it has taken a

  8. sharp turn into the fast lane. 2024 was the year that our elected leaders voted to legalize

  9. assisted suicide. Plus, we're also in the middle of a spectacularly destructive game of let's pretend

  10. on the question of what it means to be a man or a woman. Even though everyone knows what a boy is

  11. and what a girl is, the political agendas around the issue are so strong that people don't feel able to say that

  12. because of the costly backlash that will inevitably follow.

  13. However, alongside this structural and institutional rebellion and decline,

  14. the past year has seen what I would describe as a low-level spiritual awakening. High-profile people

  15. who were once opponents of the Christian faith have changed their tune. They've dialed back their rhetoric.

  16. Joe Rogan, Louise Perry, Tucker Carlson, especially Jordan Peterson, even Richard Dawkins

  17. described himself this past year as a cultural Christian. Now, he was obviously quick to clarify that

  18. it's cultural. He said nothing more than appreciating what Christianity has given to him.

  19. But it is inconceivable to think that Richard Dawkins, the most famous atheist this country has

  20. probably ever produced, would have used that language only a few years ago. And there have been

  21. others who've gone even further. They've publicly converted to Christianity. Iyan Hersey Alley,

  22. James Dellingpole, Russell Brand has had plenty to say about it all.

  23. So, on the one hand, we see the decline. On the other hand, there seems to be this spiritual life.

  24. This tension was really stark to me in the Christmas edition of The Spectator.

  25. There were two articles side by side. You open it up on one page. Here we have A.N. Wilson.

  26. He'd written an article titled, The End of Christendom is Nigh.

  27. And he looks at Britain and he concludes this, quote,

  28. For those of us who believe, the everlasting gospel will go on being true. But the end of

  29. Christendom is not only inevitable. In northwestern Europe, it has already happened. If you don't

  30. believe me, go to Scotland. If that doesn't persuade you, go to Sweden. I suspect we in Britain are nearer

  31. the equivalent of 529 than we realize. And that in less than 50 years, those in charge of such matters

  32. will decide that the Gothic cathedrals of Europe will be allowed to become like the temples of

  33. Pestum, bare ruined choirs of a forgotten cult, end quote. That's on the left-hand side. On the

  34. right-hand side, on the opposite page, we have Ayaan Hirsi Ali with an article titled, A Christian

  35. Revival is Underway. She says, quote, Christmas isn't just crass commercialism. It is vital to

  36. Western civilization and revival. Celebrating is more important than ever, end quote.

  37. Now, I would prefer that we waited a little longer with some of these high-profile figures before

  38. giving them a voice on a topic that they're only starting to understand. But the sense of spiritual

  39. awakening is undeniable. So the question is, which is it? Is it the end of things or is it the beginning?

  40. Well, I think the answer is both. We have a growing opposition to the Christian faith and we have a

  41. growing spiritual hunger. It is both harder to be a Christian and God's kingdom continues to advance.

  42. And this takes us into our passage this morning. Please turn it up, page 876, Luke 17, beginning of

  43. verse 20. At this point in Luke's gospel, we know from our perspective that Christ's ministry is

  44. perfectly on track. We know that He is going to Jerusalem where He will conquer decisively Satan,

  45. sin, and death at the end of this story. We know that everything is unfolding exactly as God has planned

  46. in the ministry of His Son. And yet, the experience of His followers, the disciples, is getting harder.

  47. When Jesus enters history, He begins His ministry by announcing Himself as God's King who has come to

  48. bring in God's kingdom. And here, verse 20, the Pharisees, the religious establishment,

  49. come with questions about it all. Verse 20, can you see? Their question is this, well, where is it?

  50. When is this kingdom that you're supposed to be bringing in coming? Where is it? And their tone

  51. and their demeanor is hostile as it is with the Pharisees' interactions with Jesus throughout the

  52. gospels. But on one level, it is a reasonable question to ask, is it not? It actually might be

  53. a question that you're asking yourselves. You've been told about Jesus Christ. We made a big old fuss

  54. about Him at Christmas, about His coming into the world as God's King and Savior. But you look around and

  55. all you see is the opposition bit. All you see is the decline. All you see is the opposition and the

  56. difficulty. It doesn't really look like this King that we talk about is reigning. Quite the opposite.

  57. But the kingdom of God doesn't all come at once, but little by little. Jesus Himself likens the way

  58. that the kingdom grows back in chapter 13 of Luke's gospel to the way yeast spreads through a loaf of bread.

  59. Slow and steady, but eventually filling the hole.

  60. Now, we might wish that the progress was a bit quicker, but if we think about it for a moment,

  61. actually this slow progress is a good thing. Because at the very most basic level,

  62. at the most selfish level, if God had brought everything at once in the first coming of Jesus,

  63. none of us would have been included.

  64. And the opportunity for people to keep entering the kingdom would not still be open.

  65. Jesus is clear. His kingdom has come. But we await the fulfillment of that kingdom when He comes again.

  66. And we live in a tension between those two days, between the decline and the progress,

  67. between what appears to be the end of things and what is very clearly also the signs of life.

  68. And so the question for us, the question for the church in our day is this,

  69. how do we live well in that tension?

  70. How do we live well between kingdom come and kingdom coming?

  71. Well, the passage that we have in front of us this morning makes two points.

  72. The first is this, how do we live well?

  73. Number one, don't get distracted.

  74. Don't get distracted.

  75. And the first word really on that point is to those of you who aren't sure about the Lord Jesus.

  76. Those of you who aren't convinced that He is who He says He is.

  77. Those of you who haven't yet given your lives to Him.

  78. Because Jesus' first words here in verse 20 are to His critics.

  79. Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them.

  80. The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed.

  81. Nor will they say, look, here it is, or there.

  82. For behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.

  83. The kingdom is in the midst of the Pharisees because the king is in their presence.

  84. He's within their grasp.

  85. That's what it literally means.

  86. The kingdom of God is within your grasp.

  87. And Jesus is saying that to this group who are still outsiders to Him and to His kingdom

  88. to urge them to enter His kingdom and to do it now.

  89. And the truth is, even in our day, that urgency remains for us all.

  90. Jesus came that first Christmas and He is still within the grasp of all and any who will reach out and receive Him.

  91. Now, perhaps you've been drawn to Jesus, but you're not sure.

  92. There's something about Him that you find compelling, magnetic, interesting, but you're not sure.

  93. Well, let me say, don't get distracted from that draw, that magnetism.

  94. Don't get distracted by the busyness and the ordinariness of life.

  95. Don't get distracted by anything for that matter.

  96. Come to Him.

  97. Keep exploring.

  98. Keep coming back to church on Sundays.

  99. We're delighted that you're here.

  100. You're always welcome.

  101. Don't get distracted.

  102. Come along to Hope Explored.

  103. Paul mentioned it earlier.

  104. Three weeks, this month, Wednesday evenings, when you can come along, explore more about who Jesus is.

  105. Ask your questions.

  106. Don't get distracted.

  107. Don't let it pass.

  108. But then, verse 22, Jesus turns to a different group of people, to His disciples.

  109. And He says to His disciples, those who do follow Him,

  110. the days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man.

  111. He's saying in the future, the persecution of the current religio-political establishment will be so hard to endure.

  112. You will so long for the kingdom to come.

  113. You will long to be vindicated for following the Lord.

  114. And you will love His enemies to be judged in the way that has been promised when His King is due to come again.

  115. But He says when you feel that pressure, don't get distracted.

  116. Don't take your eye off the ball.

  117. And He points to two possible ways that this could happen.

  118. We could say the first one is theological.

  119. Look at verse 23.

  120. Don't be misled about what the work of God looks like.

  121. Verse 23,

  122. We're the true people of God doing God's work our way.

  123. But Jesus says, no, don't follow them.

  124. You'll not miss it when I come to bring in my kingdom.

  125. It'll be like lightning on a dark night.

  126. And we often hear stories of cranks who tell the world that they know what God is doing and when He's doing it.

  127. A while ago I discovered a chap called Chris McCann of something called E-Bible Fellowship.

  128. He predicted Christ's return on the 7th of October 2014.

  129. And it's easy to say, you know, well, okay, where is it, Chris?

  130. Huh, that kind of thing.

  131. But when things are hard,

  132. the truth is that we can be distracted by theologies that promise other things to us.

  133. Look, they say, this is where the work of God is.

  134. Over here, they say, this is where the work of God is.

  135. The so-called prosperity gospel is very attractive to people who are poor.

  136. The no-cost gospel, where we just live the same as everyone else,

  137. unwilling to bear the sacrifice of refusing to bow the knee to the gods of the culture,

  138. is very attractive to all of us when the pressure is on.

  139. When we live at a time and people are saying,

  140. look here, that's God at work,

  141. but actually what they're pointing to is some sort of compromise

  142. in order that we don't have to stand out when we name the name of Christ.

  143. We've gone off course.

  144. And the Lord Jesus says, don't get distracted.

  145. Don't get distracted by cultural compromise,

  146. even if it has a theological veneer.

  147. And, he says, don't just get your head down either.

  148. That's where he goes next with the distraction of,

  149. it's not so much a theological one,

  150. it's the distraction of ordinary life.

  151. He makes this point with two examples from Israel's history.

  152. Verse 26,

  153. Just as it was in the days of Noah,

  154. so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.

  155. They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage

  156. until the day when Noah entered the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all.

  157. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot,

  158. they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

  159. But on the day when Lot went out from Sodom,

  160. fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

  161. So will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

  162. These examples emphasize how unexpected and devastating his coming will be,

  163. particularly for those who aren't ready.

  164. The example of Noah is looking back to Genesis 6 and 7.

  165. Noah believed the promises of God that he would destroy the earth by flood.

  166. So he started building an ark.

  167. And the people were going about their ordinary lives.

  168. They were eating and drinking and marrying and so on.

  169. Noah, in that case, would have been the laughingstock of his neighborhood.

  170. He was building this huge seafaring construction miles away from any sea.

  171. And then the rains came.

  172. And they came.

  173. And they came.

  174. And they came.

  175. And everyone was washed away.

  176. The same was true with Lot.

  177. That story is in Genesis chapter 18,

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  178. when Sodom was so unjust and inhospitable and immoral

  179. that God brought a devastating judgment on the city.

  180. People were eating and drinking and striking deals

  181. and building new homes and cultivating commerce.

  182. And in the midst of it all, fire and sulfur fell from heaven and destroyed them.

  183. It is a terrifying image.

  184. Jesus says the same thing will happen when he comes again.

  185. People will be so distracted with their ordinary lives

  186. that they'll be completely taken by surprise.

  187. Now, it is so important to keep this in mind when we face persecution.

  188. As we feel the sense of that opposition rising.

  189. As it bites for us in the cut and thrust of our lives.

  190. Because the temptation to allow ourselves to be distracted

  191. and to retreat into the regular things of life.

  192. Just the regular things that occupy the chat

  193. and the kind of discourse of everybody around us.

  194. We just are absorbed into that.

  195. That temptation is really powerful.

  196. We can so easily throw ourselves into the same things as everyone else.

  197. Weddings, verse 27.

  198. Business, verse 28.

  199. Mortgages, verse 28.

  200. And we just step back from faithfulness.

  201. Well, Jesus sounds the warning.

  202. Look at verse 32.

  203. Remember Lot's wife.

  204. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it.

  205. But whoever loses his life will keep it.

  206. In the process of being rescued from the burning wreckage of Sodom,

  207. Lot's wife looked back and was destroyed.

  208. Not just because of a backward glance.

  209. It wasn't just that she heard something and turned around and that was it.

  210. No.

  211. It was because of what that glance represented

  212. about where her heart really was.

  213. She was longing

  214. to go back to everything the world had to offer her.

  215. She wanted what was back there.

  216. She wanted to preserve life on her terms.

  217. And when we cut it back,

  218. when we think about it,

  219. that is actually a really attractive option to all of us

  220. so we can have life on our terms.

  221. We love comfort.

  222. We hate hardship.

  223. We hate being,

  224. well, there are some people that hate being

  225. the person that stands out,

  226. but most of us don't.

  227. Those people,

  228. tricky company, let's be honest.

  229. There are people that just love a fight.

  230. They'd have a fight in an empty room,

  231. but most of us aren't like that.

  232. We hate hardship.

  233. We hate opposition.

  234. And we just love to hold on to

  235. the way things were when life was easier.

  236. And Jesus says to us,

  237. don't be distracted.

  238. Don't be distracted.

  239. Now,

  240. all of this talk is really clear

  241. about the judgment aspect.

  242. But I think we need to be here.

  243. I think we need to see

  244. that Jesus is primarily here

  245. reassuring the disciples.

  246. You see,

  247. His coming judgment

  248. is to be a source of strength

  249. and encouragement

  250. for His people.

  251. A day is coming, you see,

  252. when everything will be put right.

  253. Now, this happened

  254. for this generation

  255. when God judged the old order

  256. and the destruction of the temple

  257. in AD 70.

  258. What that means for us

  259. all these years later

  260. is that we can be sure

  261. that God keeps His word

  262. on these things.

  263. But what it means is

  264. that when we face injustice

  265. and when we face hardship

  266. for being faithful

  267. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  268. we know that He's going

  269. to put things right.

  270. There is a day coming

  271. when justice for that hardship

  272. will be done.

  273. So as you look ahead

  274. in this year, 2025,

  275. whatever persecution

  276. you are facing,

  277. whatever struggles

  278. for naming the name of Christ

  279. you come up against,

  280. in whatever tricky context

  281. that might be,

  282. hold on.

  283. Don't take your eye off the ball.

  284. Jesus will one day

  285. sort it all out

  286. and you will be vindicated.

  287. And your faithfulness,

  288. even in small and hidden ways,

  289. will be seen as good

  290. and right and true

  291. on that day.

  292. And on that day,

  293. your faithfulness now

  294. will be worth it.

  295. And you will reflect

  296. on that faithfulness

  297. and be grateful

  298. that you persevered.

  299. When the Lord smiles at you

  300. and says,

  301. well done,

  302. everything,

  303. every moment of struggle

  304. for the name of Christ now

  305. will be worth it.

  306. So don't get distracted.

  307. But the Lord's well done

  308. is a great motivator

  309. for faithfulness,

  310. that's true.

  311. But standing against opposition

  312. is still tough.

  313. It's still hard.

  314. As the temperature rises,

  315. continuing to be faithful

  316. is more difficult.

  317. Jesus knows this,

  318. which is why he then goes

  319. where he goes next

  320. in the passage.

  321. So here's the second point.

  322. The first is,

  323. don't get distracted.

  324. The second is,

  325. don't get disconnected.

  326. Don't get disconnected.

  327. That's the point

  328. about the story

  329. of the widow in 18,

  330. 1 to 8.

  331. And he told them a parable

  332. to the effect

  333. that they ought always

  334. to pray and not lose heart.

  335. That's our temptation,

  336. isn't it?

  337. We lose heart.

  338. Whether it's the world around us

  339. that have been talking

  340. about the opposition,

  341. or even just our own sin,

  342. even our own struggles,

  343. the fact that we fall

  344. into that pattern

  345. again and again,

  346. losing heart

  347. is a constant temptation.

  348. But here we are,

  349. this parable,

  350. this woman,

  351. shows us

  352. how it is

  353. that we won't lose heart.

  354. Dependent

  355. and persistent prayer.

  356. That's the means

  357. through which

  358. God sustains

  359. and builds His church

  360. in the face

  361. of opposition.

  362. Dependent

  363. and persistent

  364. prayer.

  365. Now,

  366. it's a parable,

  367. so there are limits

  368. to what we're supposed

  369. to draw from the story.

  370. Just because the judge

  371. is unjust and grudging

  372. doesn't mean

  373. that we should think

  374. of God like that.

  375. Obviously,

  376. He draws the contrast.

  377. That's not the point.

  378. The point,

  379. though,

  380. is this.

  381. If an unjust judge

  382. would give justice,

  383. how much more

  384. the perfectly just Lord

  385. who hears

  386. and answers

  387. the prayers

  388. of His people.

  389. Back in chapter 11,

  390. Jesus has taught

  391. His disciples

  392. how to pray.

  393. Our Father in heaven,

  394. hallowed be Your name.

  395. Your kingdom come.

  396. Your will be done

  397. on earth

  398. as it is in heaven.

  399. Give us today

  400. our daily bread

  401. and forgive us

  402. our sins.

  403. For we ourselves

  404. forgive everyone

  405. who is indebted to us

  406. and lead us not

  407. into temptation.

  408. It is a pattern prayer.

  409. It covers all the areas

  410. that we should bring

  411. to our Heavenly Father

  412. from His glory

  413. to our provision.

  414. It is the means

  415. through which we express

  416. a vital and meaningful

  417. relationship with Him.

  418. And this is essential

  419. when the pressure is on.

  420. And that's why we pray

  421. this prayer

  422. each Lord's Day

  423. as a congregation.

  424. In fact,

  425. did you notice

  426. it is the means

  427. by which

  428. when He returns

  429. Jesus will gauge

  430. the spiritual temperature

  431. of His church.

  432. Look at verse 8.

  433. Chapter 18,

  434. verse 8.

  435. When the Son of Man

  436. comes,

  437. will He find faith

  438. on earth?

  439. Chapter 17,

  440. God will do

  441. what He has promised

  442. to do.

  443. He will judge

  444. His enemies

  445. and vindicate

  446. those who are His.

  447. The question is

  448. when He comes

  449. to do that,

  450. will He find us

  451. faithful,

  452. trusting Him

  453. even through

  454. the hardships.

  455. When He comes

  456. as He promises

  457. in chapter 17,

  458. will He find us

  459. depending Him

  460. as He asks

  461. in chapter 18?

  462. When things are tough

  463. for you personally

  464. and you feel like

  465. giving up,

  466. prayer is the first

  467. step you should take.

  468. When we look around

  469. at the spiritual state

  470. of our city

  471. or our nation,

  472. prayer is the first

  473. instinct we should have.

  474. When we consider

  475. the proposed end

  476. of Christendom

  477. on the one hand

  478. and the spiritual hunger

  479. on the other,

  480. prayer is how one

  481. will grow

  482. and the other

  483. will be turned around.

  484. And it will be

  485. turned around.

  486. It will be turned around.

  487. When Jesus said

  488. these things,

  489. He had about

  490. a dozen followers.

  491. Today He has billions.

  492. The kingdom is growing.

  493. He keeps His word.

  494. He keeps His promises.

  495. But as we look ahead

  496. to 2025,

  497. here is an encouragement

  498. to lean on the Lord

  499. and know His sustaining grace.

  500. And it is a challenge

  501. to depend more deeply

  502. on Him

  503. in an active

  504. and persistent

  505. and faith-filled way.

  506. Which father among us here,

  507. if you've got children,

  508. which one doesn't love it

  509. when your child comes to you

  510. and says,

  511. can I talk to you?

  512. Dad,

  513. can I talk to you?

  514. How much more

  515. does our perfect

  516. Heavenly Father

  517. delight when we talk to Him?

  518. See,

  519. that's the thing.

  520. When we come to talk about prayer

  521. in a context like this,

  522. it's easy,

  523. isn't it?

  524. Because we all struggle.

  525. And it's easy to say,

  526. oh,

  527. you should try harder.

  528. But the fact of the matter is

  529. when we come to think

  530. about these things,

  531. we need to see prayer

  532. as the gift that it is.

  533. And we need to recognize

  534. that it is something

  535. we get to do.

  536. We get to speak

  537. to the Creator

  538. of the universe.

  539. You know,

  540. it is a struggle.

  541. Here are three things,

  542. I hope,

  543. to encourage us in this.

  544. And the first is that

  545. it is a privilege.

  546. Prayer is a privilege.

  547. We get to pray.

  548. Because you are in

  549. the Lord Jesus,

  550. if you put your faith in Christ,

  551. you are in the Lord Jesus

  552. and you are given full

  553. and free access

  554. to the one who holds

  555. the whole world in His hands.

  556. And He is pleased

  557. to hear your voice.

  558. And He is pleased

  559. to have you

  560. coming back to Him

  561. with the same requests

  562. again and again.

  563. And He is pleased

  564. to hear your voice

  565. and to answer your requests.

  566. Prayer is a privilege.

  567. When we think about it like that,

  568. it reframes, I think,

  569. so much of how we think

  570. about prayer.

  571. Prayer in general.

  572. The second thing,

  573. the second encouragement

  574. I want to say is this,

  575. make use of the church

  576. prayer meeting.

  577. The first Wednesday

  578. of the month,

  579. if you find prayer difficult,

  580. all of us do,

  581. on the first Wednesday

  582. of the month,

  583. there is a time

  584. that we have set aside

  585. for the church

  586. to join together

  587. to pray through things

  588. that you haven't had

  589. to prepare or think

  590. through beforehand.

  591. How many of us think,

  592. oh, we sit down to pray

  593. and we start,

  594. we make good intentions

  595. and we make a start

  596. and we run dry

  597. pretty quickly

  598. because we haven't

  599. really thought

  600. about these things.

  601. What should I pray for?

  602. How do I go with this?

  603. I need to make a list.

  604. We lose the list.

  605. All of that.

  606. Well, here it is.

  607. There are things

  608. that we are putting before us

  609. as a congregation

  610. to pray for

  611. and to think through.

  612. It's all given to you.

  613. We lead you through the prayers

  614. of praise to God,

  615. petition for things

  616. that are all kinds

  617. of good things.

  618. And when we come together

  619. to do that,

  620. when we do it together,

  621. it deepens our bones

  622. as a fellowship.

  623. Then the third thing

  624. to try to kind of

  625. recalibrate your prayer life,

  626. pray the prayers in Scripture.

  627. Open your Bible,

  628. particularly the Psalms,

  629. and pray the prayers

  630. that are there.

  631. It's a great place to start

  632. if you've dried up

  633. and it will help you

  634. in tons of ways.

  635. Not least,

  636. you'll pray in a more

  637. biblical way,

  638. a more God-centered way,

  639. and you'll pray in ways

  640. that express

  641. the real experiences of life.

  642. That's what happens

  643. when you take up

  644. the psalmist's words.

  645. I know that it's really easy

  646. to find something else to do

  647. rather than to pray,

  648. rather than to depend on God.

  649. But if,

  650. here's the bottom line,

  651. if we will,

  652. not just endure,

  653. but flourish spiritually

  654. in the year ahead,

  655. that's what we want.

  656. We don't want to just make it.

  657. We want to flourish.

  658. We want to grow.

  659. If we're going to persist

  660. with joy

  661. in the face of opposition,

  662. we must not get disconnected

  663. from the source of that joy.

  664. So,

  665. our King has come.

  666. That's Christmas.

  667. He is coming again.

  668. And on that day,

  669. justice and joy

  670. will link arms.

  671. But while we wait

  672. for that day,

  673. we have to battle on today.

  674. So,

  675. don't get distracted

  676. and don't get disconnected

  677. because the victory

  678. is assured

  679. and so we're battling

  680. on a winning side

  681. and we're battling

  682. in the strength

  683. that He provides.

  684. Let's pray together.

  685. Thank you.
