  1. Good morning, everyone. Handouts at the back, pens as well. I'm a bit more alive today.

  2. I might still cough, so please excuse me, but I'm here. I'm well. Let me pray and we'll

  3. just dive straight in. Lord God, we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ, the Anointed

  4. One, the Prophet, Priest and King who has come to save us, who intercedes for us in heaven

  5. right now and whose cross, that glorious cross, is our salvation. And we ask that we would

  6. gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of his work today, of his death, of the cross.

  7. And would we not only know it in our minds, but would we love it in our hearts? And we

  8. ask all this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. Amen. So this is a series all about the work of Christ. As we've seen over the past few

  10. weeks, we've seen that God saves us through offices. So through prophets, priests and

  11. kings. So God doesn't just generally save. He doesn't just zap this thing called salvation

  12. down to us. No, he saves by providing three types of men, three offices, which are given

  13. to solve our three problems of sin. Prophets cure ignorance, priests cure guilt, and kings

  14. free the enslaved. And over this series, we're seeing how each of these offices Christ fulfills,

  15. and that's how he saves us. And so when Christ came to save us, he came to fulfill these three

  16. offices. That's how he saves. So as we learn these offices, we then better appreciate how

  17. Christ saves us. And that's the intention of this whole series. And today we've come to

  18. the office of priest. And there's a lot to get through. So let's first just define what a

  19. priest is and does. And this is the first point today. A priest brings us to God. So Hebrews

  20. 5 gives us the classic definition of a priest. For every high priest chosen from among men

  21. is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

  22. So just a few things to note here. We'll unpack this as we go. But just a few things to note here.

  23. First, do you see a priest is a man, a human being. They're chosen among men. And that's important

  24. because a priest is appointed to act on behalf of men. A priest represents the people. And representing

  25. how, did you see, in relation to God. So they don't represent the people on behalf, like toward other

  26. nations or towards animals or nature or whatever it might be. No, that they represent the people in

  27. relation to God. A priest represents God's people up to God. So we can't come to God on our own.

  28. We can't come individually or kind of in any old way. But instead, a priest represents us to God,

  29. brings us to God. And what does he do for us in order to bring us to God? Do you see at the end of

  30. verse one, he offers gifts and sacrifices. Sacrifices are inseparably tied to the priesthood

  31. and coming to God. Priests and sacrifices go together. But if you want to just simplify all

  32. that, just think, a priest brings us to God, okay? And this is in distinction to prophets who bring

  33. God to us. So think of it like this, and think back to all we've learned about prophets. A prophet

  34. is a mediator who brings God down to us, and the arrow goes down, right? So we need to hear from

  35. God, and so a prophet does that. A prophet represents God to the people. But a priest represents the people

  36. up to God. So we come to God through a priest. And we need both of these for salvation, don't we? So we need

  37. to know God for eternal life, and we need to hear from him, prophets. But also, we need to be with God

  38. for eternal life. Knowing him means being with him. And to understand why we need a priest to do this,

  39. to be able to come to God at all, we need to understand that the effects of sin are very vast.

  40. So first, just think, as we think of prophets, we've seen that sin has done something in us.

  41. Hasn't it? So it's changed us. Do you remember why we need a prophet? Well, because sin has done

  42. something in us, we've become ignorant, haven't we? Our minds have become darkened.

  43. And in ourselves, we've become corrupt.

  44. So sin has done something in us. I would just kind of like you put this, that over us and in us were not that artistic.

  45. So just think, all that sin is in the people, with the people.

  46. And so God sends prophets to save us from these effects of sin.

  47. But sin has also done a lot more than that.

  48. Sin has done something to God's attitude toward us.

  49. How God relates to us has changed.

  50. So just look at some of these verses to see God's disposition toward us as sinners.

  51. So Ephesians 2.

  52. We are children of wrath.

  53. In our sin, God's attitude towards us is wrathful.

  54. And what else?

  55. Sin has faced God's wrath and fury, Romans 2.

  56. We are God's enemies.

  57. There's enmity now.

  58. What else?

  59. And how does God feel about his enemies?

  60. Well, he says they need to die.

  61. That's why the promise to Adam is, if you sin, you shall surely die.

  62. And the wages of sin is death.

  63. And that means both physical death and eternal death in hell.

  64. So something has changed in our relationship with God.

  65. Ever since the fall, God's attitude and relationship toward humanity has changed.

  66. He's now wrathful and furious.

  67. Now, that isn't to say that God has changed in himself.

  68. As if, kind of, he was a nice God before, but now with sinners, now he's turned into an angry God.

  69. No, no, we're not saying that.

  70. Think back to our doctrine of God classes.

  71. God doesn't change in himself.

  72. That's why I've written these words, not in God, but kind of in the relationship between God and man.

  73. That this is a change in relation.

  74. That this change is a reaction towards sin.

  75. Our sin now provokes God's holiness and the justice of God, which results in a change of relationship.

  76. Wrath.

  77. And so now, there is this huge and terrifying demand hanging over humanity, and it's needing to be met.

  78. It's separating us from God, and it's this demand needing to be met.

  79. And it's weighing down on humanity.

  80. So it's going to be like this.

  81. Okay, we can just sum it up with wrath and death.

  82. Okay?

  83. So, that there is now, in our relationship with God, that there is now this huge demand both separating us, weighing down on us.

  84. And it's a demand that needs to be met.

  85. It's a penalty.

  86. A demand needing to be met if we're to relate to God at all.

  87. And so, we can't approach God as we are.

  88. God is too holy, too righteous, too just for us to just approach him as we are in our sin.

  89. Because as soon as we approach him, all that we would encounter is his wrath and death.

  90. These demands separate us from God, bar us from coming to him.

  91. And so, if we want to approach God and be reconciled to him and to know him and to have a good relationship with him and to have life with him, what needs to happen?

  92. These demands need to be met.

  93. They need to be satisfied, paid for, dealt with.

  94. But how can that happen?

  95. Well, we need someone holy enough to come into his presence.

  96. And we need that same person to deal with the demand that stops us approaching him.

  97. That is the only way we can come to God.

  98. In a word, we need someone to achieve propitiation for us.

  99. This is a strange but important word.

  100. I want to teach you new words here.

  101. And I want us to learn this.

  102. Propitiation means to appease God's anger.

  103. To end and satisfy the demands of God's justice and anger.

  104. So, when someone propitiates God, they settle his anger.

  105. Okay?

  106. Is everyone on board with that?

  107. And so, we need someone to achieve propitiation.

  108. Okay?

  109. So, propitiation is the state in God.

  110. With God's anger settled.

  111. And the verb to propitiate, someone propitiates toward God.

  112. And when that happens, this relationship is restored.

  113. We can come to God when that happens.

  114. And when someone does that, this is called atonement.

  115. Atonement.

  116. And this is another word I want us to learn.

  117. Atonement.

  118. There's a handy way to remember this.

  119. Atonement means being at one with God.

  120. Right?

  121. At-one-ment.

  122. Atonement.

  123. It means dealing with guilt.

  124. The guilt of sin.

  125. And propitiating God's anger.

  126. Restoring the relationship.

  127. And so, when you have propitiation, that means that disappears.

  128. And when you have atonement, it means it kind of refers to the whole relationship.

  129. The whole thing is restored.

  130. And so, we need someone to step in between us and God.

  131. A mediator.

  132. To propitiate God's wrath and achieve atonement.

  133. And this is where a priest comes in.

  134. A priest does exactly that.

  135. God provides priests as mediators to propitiate the wrath of God.

  136. And provide atonement.

  137. And provide atonement for our sins.

  138. And how do they do that?

  139. Remember the definition from Hebrews 5.

  140. They achieve this through sacrifice.

  141. So, if we are to come to God at all.

  142. We need a priest and a sacrifice to be able to come to God.

  143. One and two.

  144. Right?

  145. That's the only way to come to God.

  146. So, God says, you can't approach me in any old way.

  147. Your sin is too severe.

  148. My justice is too perfect.

  149. Instead, you must come through an appointed office.

  150. A priest.

  151. And through an appointed means.

  152. Sacrifice.

  153. And through him, only then can these demands be met.

  154. And only then can you approach God.

  155. And so, sacrifices are key to any priestly work.

  156. And key to propitiation and atonement.

  157. And coming back to God.

  158. They're key to salvation.

  159. And so, with this in mind.

  160. I want us to now just look at the Old Testament.

  161. And at how sacrifices and priests worked.

  162. And then we'll kind of piece it all together.

  163. And I want us to use all of this to shape our understanding of the cross.

  164. So, we'll do a quick Old Testament priests and sacrifices overview.

  165. So, this is the second point today.

  166. And there are two things I want us to see about the Old Testament.

  167. The first sub-point is this.

  168. Animal sacrifices were substitutes and propitiation.

  169. Now, there are various types of sacrifices in the Old Testament.

  170. And that we used at different times for different occasions.

  171. But I kind of want us to just simplify things for now.

  172. And just show that the typical sacrifice for sin.

  173. And the process went like this.

  174. So, if I was an Israelite sinner.

  175. I would bring an animal to the tabernacle or the temple.

  176. I'd bring it to the outer court.

  177. So, not inside the holy place or the holy of holies.

  178. I'd bring it to the outer court.

  179. And the outer court was a bit like a butcher's house.

  180. A slaughterhouse.

  181. So, I'd bring my, let's say, goat or bull.

  182. I'd bring it along.

  183. I would take it to the outer court.

  184. I would lay my hand on it.

  185. And then I would kill it.

  186. And then the priest would come along.

  187. And take the dead animal.

  188. And he would take it over slightly in the courtyard towards the building, the tabernacle of the temple.

  189. And just before you get to the entrance, there's this big metal grate, a big barbecue, basically.

  190. And you would put the sacrifice on that.

  191. Burn it.

  192. And depending on what type of sacrifice, there'll be different parts of the animal that would be burned.

  193. But ultimately, the priest would take it and burn it.

  194. Okay?

  195. That's kind of the sacrificial system in a nutshell.

  196. So, look at Leviticus 1.

  197. These are some of the commands of what happened.

  198. Now, key thing I want us to see here is the laying on of hands.

  199. When the sinner placed his hand on the animal, this was a sign of his sin and guilt transferring to the animal.

  200. It was showing my sin is now passing from me onto something else, onto this lamb or goat or bull.

  201. And so, in Leviticus 16, this is all about the Day of Atonement, when the high priest would atone for all the sins.

  202. Just look what he would do.

  203. This makes the picture a little bit clearer.

  204. And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel

  205. and all their transgressions, all their sins.

  206. As he touched the goat and confessed all the sins of Israel, it was showing that all the sins of Israel are now going onto this goat.

  207. Whatever happens to this goat from now on, this is happening instead of the people.

  208. The animal became a substitute for the sinner.

  209. And what would happen to it?

  210. It would be killed.

  211. It would die instead of the sinner.

  212. The sacrifice of this animal is this real vivid picture of what needs to be done to us.

  213. My sin goes to that goat and so that goat must die.

  214. The whole sacrificial system of the Old Testament, it reveals this demand of death and the need for propitiation.

  215. It's saying the only way you can approach God is if your sin goes onto something else and that something else needs to die

  216. because those are the demands separating you from God.

  217. And so the only way for us to approach God is for that wrath to land on something or someone else.

  218. Because look what this then achieves.

  219. Leviticus 1 again.

  220. It shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

  221. Do you remember atonement at one with God?

  222. These sacrifices propitiated the wrath of God and achieved atonement for the sinner.

  223. So, think of it like this.

  224. As the Israelites placed his or her hand on the animal, what happens?

  225. It's like all the sin...

  226. Let me write sin here.

  227. It's like all the sin and guilt of that people...

  228. It's going...

  229. It's not on them anymore.

  230. It's going...

  231. Onto the sacrifice, onto the animal.

  232. And so what then happens to the animal in death?

  233. Well, all the demands of God upon sin...

  234. It's not going on to the people anymore.

  235. It's going on...

  236. To the animal.

  237. To the sacrifice.

  238. It's being diverted.

  239. So the sin on us is being diverted to another.

  240. And the wrath, the demands of God are being diverted to another as well.

  241. And so, what is this whole thing?

  242. So, this...

  243. You can think of this little section here.

  244. This is propitiation.

  245. This is the demands, the wrath being satisfied.

  246. And this whole thing, with this restored relationship, this whole thing is atonement.

  247. So you can kind of think that's propitiation.

  248. But this whole thing is atonement.

  249. Right?

  250. And so, as the offerer laid hands on the animal, all the sin and guilt is going to be transferred to the animal.

  251. And in its death, the wrath of God, all these demands are being met and falling onto the animal instead.

  252. And then, the worshipper would then be made right with God.

  253. You see, atoned for.

  254. And so, the animal sacrifices were substitutes, right?

  255. In place of the people.

  256. And they were propitiation.

  257. Because the death goes onto the animal.

  258. But a second thing about the Old Testament.

  259. Priests carried the people with them.

  260. I think this is on the other side of your sheet.

  261. So, whenever the priests sacrificed and laid hands and went into God's presence in the tabernacle or did anything,

  262. it's important to understand they never did this kind of in solitude or just for themselves.

  263. Priests carried all the people of God with them in whatever they did.

  264. So, have a look at this picture of a priest that I got there for you.

  265. I want you to notice what they're wearing.

  266. Just have a look.

  267. What catches your eye?

  268. So, in Exodus 28, we read, it's kind of a whole laws about the garments for the priests.

  269. And we read that the priest had to wear two stones on their shoulders.

  270. You can kind of see them a little bit.

  271. Just on their shoulders there.

  272. Two stones on his shoulders.

  273. And on those stones were written all the 12 tribes of Israel.

  274. Simeon, Gad, Reuben.

  275. And not only that, look on their chest.

  276. They had a breastplate.

  277. And if you can count, how many stones were on that breastplate?

  278. Twelve.

  279. Each of those stones also had a name of the tribe of Israel written on them.

  280. And so, you could say that the people's names, all the people of God, were written on the heart of the priest.

  281. And he would carry God's people on his shoulders.

  282. And so, this was an amazing picture showing that whatever the priest did, he did it on behalf of the people.

  283. United to the people.

  284. Sacrificing and coming to God for them.

  285. On behalf of them.

  286. And so, when Aaron entered into God's presence in the temple,

  287. He was not just one bloke going in alone.

  288. But actually, all of Israel were coming in with him into God's presence.

  289. And so, God set all this up, all this system up, these priests and these sacrifices,

  290. all so that his people could come to him and approach him.

  291. Okay?

  292. This is the only way you can do it.

  293. But there's something insufficient about all this Old Testament priesthood and sacrifices.

  294. And I want you to look through Hebrews to find out what they are.

  295. So, in the little breakout box there, break out into groups and just answer two questions.

  296. Shouldn't take long.

  297. We'll give you a couple of minutes.

  298. Look up these passages and find out what is the problem with the Old Testament sacrificial system.

  299. Thank you.

  300. Thank you.

  301. Thank you.

  302. Thank you.

  303. Thank you.

  304. Thank you.

  305. Thank you.

  306. Thank you.

  307. Thank you.

  308. Thank you.

  309. Thank you.

  310. Thank you.

  311. Thank you.

  312. Thank you.

  313. Thank you.

  314. My name that that Ryan who has the Ryan who has the

  315. okay let's bring it together so what is the problem with the old testament sacrificial system

  316. uh hebrew said what was the problem with the the priesthood remember there are two elements

  317. the priests and the sacrifices uh moses what what was wrong with the the priesthood they would die

  318. right so so we need a priest to come to god but but that priest would die and so you would need to

  319. replace that priest and that priest would die then replace that priest and so in this system if we need

  320. a priest to come to god this these priests really aren't doing it but because they're kind of a

  321. temporary measure to get us there but then they would die and we need to replace

  322. and so it he can only bring us to god as long as he lives so it's a bit like um have you ever seen

  323. watson gromit in the wrong trousers amazing film you know in the final kind of big uh train chase scene

  324. do you remember that um uh gromit's riding this little uh toy train and he's coming to the end

  325. of the track and what he does is uh he picks up a box of spare track and he's kind of laying it as he

  326. goes you're in that it's amazing um and so he he's uh you kind of think think of the old testament

  327. sacrificial system like that like we're trying to get to god and so we put a a priest down a bit of

  328. track and then we come to the end of that and we've got to lay another and so we're just constantly

  329. having to lay a new track new track but we're never really getting to god but we need a permanent

  330. eternal priest who can lead us all the way to god and who will never die

  331. and how about hebrews 10 what was the problem with the old testament sacrifices um malvina

  332. um they were never sufficient um yeah right yeah yeah there's a lot going on there but but it's

  333. quite it's quite striking isn't it it is impossible for the blood of bulls to take away sin to to to

  334. achieve forgiveness

  335. and that's in part because animals can't pay for human sins

  336. but remember the demands of death for us for humans

  337. and so think of all the the millions of liters of blood

  338. that was poured out by israel over the centuries even all that blood

  339. being shed every day throughout the centuries that that's just like throwing a thimble of

  340. water onto a fire so it's not actually solving the issue

  341. otherwise this is the point the writer the hebrews makes

  342. otherwise if a bull was good enough then one bull will do

  343. but but the constant sacrifices every day every week every year throughout the centuries

  344. these constant sacrifices were a constant reminder that this isn't really achieving propitiation

  345. or atonement it's not really doing it and so what do we need we need a priest who can live forever

  346. and we need one sacrifice that is good enough to atone for sin forever

  347. and so with this priesthood and this problem in the background that this shapes everything about why jesus had to become man

  348. what jesus's death achieved

  349. and what jesus was doing for us on the cross

  350. and i want us to see these three things as we look at jesus the great high priest

  351. i want us to see how jesus fulfills all this

  352. so look at the first point jesus became man

  353. to be a human sacrifice

  354. so look what hebrews says about why jesus had to become human

  355. why christmas

  356. hebrews 2

  357. therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect

  358. so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest

  359. in the service of god to make propitiation

  360. for the sins of the people

  361. the son of god

  362. had to become human

  363. because only human sacrifices will do to save us

  364. only a human sacrifice will make propitiation for our sins

  365. so jesus he was born

  366. with a purpose

  367. he was born in a human body

  368. to be a sacrifice

  369. and because he's sinless

  370. and because he's the son of god

  371. and his life is infinitely valuable

  372. infinitely more valuable than

  373. than any animal or bull or goat

  374. that means his life

  375. can match

  376. this huge and terrifying demand

  377. that hangs over us

  378. and that is why it says in hebrews 9

  379. but as it is he has appeared once

  380. for all

  381. at the end of the ages

  382. to put away sin

  383. by the sacrifice of himself

  384. millions of liters of animal blood

  385. could never do this

  386. but the cross

  387. definitively

  388. once and for all

  389. atoned for the sins of the people

  390. but also

  391. think about this

  392. if jesus was the sacrifice

  393. who offered that sacrifice

  394. priests

  395. priests offer sacrifices

  396. don't they

  397. right

  398. so if jesus is the sacrifice

  399. who offered it

  400. where's the priest

  401. in this transaction

  402. jesus is the priest

  403. he offered himself

  404. but what does jesus say

  405. in john 10

  406. i lay down my life

  407. for the sheep

  408. who laid it down

  409. who offered it

  410. jesus did

  411. jesus is both

  412. the priest

  413. and the sacrifice

  414. and so when christ

  415. comes in the fullness

  416. of time

  417. we have this pattern

  418. of priest

  419. and sacrifice

  420. needing to be fulfilled

  421. and how is it fulfilled

  422. it's fulfilled

  423. one man

  424. who will live forever

  425. the christ

  426. and it's

  427. on his cross

  428. on that first good friday

  429. as the skies were darkened

  430. something priestly was happening

  431. the true priest

  432. was offering

  433. the sacrifice

  434. of himself

  435. on the altar

  436. of the cross

  437. and his blood

  438. was shed

  439. to propitiate

  440. god's wrath

  441. and atone

  442. for the sins

  443. of the people

  444. this is why

  445. jesus is called

  446. the lamb of god

  447. this is why

  448. his death

  449. occurs

  450. on the passover

  451. that's no coincidence

  452. god is showing us

  453. that this is the sacrifice

  454. and the priest

  455. to end all sacrifices

  456. but a second thing

  457. all this shows us

  458. what the cross

  459. achieved

  460. so if we understand

  461. what jesus was

  462. on the cross

  463. he was a sacrifice

  464. we can understand

  465. what he achieved

  466. on the cross

  467. jesus

  468. was

  469. satisfying

  470. the demands

  471. of god's justice

  472. all the force

  473. of god's

  474. holiness

  475. on evil

  476. all the wrath

  477. that needs to be

  478. poured out

  479. on sin

  480. it was all

  481. falling

  482. on jesus

  483. to propitiate

  484. god's anger

  485. which means

  486. jesus didn't only

  487. die a physical

  488. death

  489. which he most

  490. certainly did

  491. but he also

  492. died a spiritual

  493. death

  494. he felt

  495. the wrath

  496. of god

  497. in his soul

  498. he experienced

  499. what it is

  500. truly like

  501. for god

  502. to unleash

  503. his anger

  504. on a sinner

  505. and that's why

  506. in gethsemane

  507. do you remember

  508. what happened

  509. in gethsemane

  510. that's why

  511. he was so

  512. terrified

  513. about what

  514. was about

  515. to happen

  516. that's why

  517. he sweat

  518. drops of blood

  519. he knows

  520. he's about

  521. to drink

  522. the cup

  523. of god's

  524. wrath

  525. all these

  526. demands

  527. and so

  528. look what

  529. the bible

  530. has to say

  531. about what

  532. that achieved

  533. what did

  534. the cross

  535. achieve

  536. 1 john 2

  537. he is

  538. the propitiation

  539. for our

  540. sins

  541. in this

  542. is love

  543. not that

  544. we have

  545. loved god

  546. but that

  547. he loved

  548. us

  549. and sent

  550. his son

  551. to be

  552. the propitiation

  553. for our

  554. sins

  555. christ jesus

  556. whom god

  557. put forward

  558. as a

  559. propitiation

  560. by his

  561. blood

  562. finally

  563. propitiation

  564. has been

  565. achieved

  566. christ has

  567. ended

  568. the anger

  569. of god

  570. for his

  571. people

  572. for you

  573. and so

  574. there isn't

  575. a single

  576. demand

  577. hanging over

  578. your head

  579. anymore

  580. richard

  581. dawkins

  582. once said

  583. this in

  584. an interview

  585. he said

  586. this

  587. if god

  588. wanted to

  589. forgive our

  590. sins

  591. why not

  592. just forgive

  593. them

  594. without having

  595. himself tortured

  596. and executed

  597. in payment

  598. well can we

  599. see why

  600. he's so

  601. wrong to

  602. think that

  603. what needs

  604. to be

  605. done

  606. if there

  607. is to

  608. be any

  609. atonement

  610. or forgiveness

  611. what does

  612. it take

  613. the demand

  614. of god's

  615. justice

  616. and anger

  617. and wrath

  618. that needs

  619. to be

  620. satisfied

  621. god is

  622. too holy

  623. for this

  624. just a

  625. slide

  626. and he's

  627. too just

  628. to just

  629. ignore these

  630. demands

  631. this

  632. wrath

  633. it has

  634. to go

  635. somewhere

  636. but the

  637. question is

  638. where is it

  639. going to

  640. go

  641. who's it

  642. going to

  643. go on

  644. and on

  645. the cross

  646. jesus was

  647. our priest

  648. propitiating

  649. god's wrath

  650. so that we

  651. can now

  652. come into

  653. his presence

  654. the wrath

  655. isn't on

  656. us anymore

  657. it has all

  658. in the past

  659. been laid

  660. on christ

  661. which brings

  662. me to the

  663. final thing

  664. to see

  665. here

  666. we'll wrap

  667. up in a

  668. minute

  669. jesus was

  670. representing

  671. us on

  672. the cross

  673. so just

  674. like aaron

  675. had the

  676. people written

  677. on his

  678. heart as

  679. he went

  680. to the

  681. altar

  682. so jesus

  683. had our

  684. names

  685. written on

  686. his heart

  687. as he

  688. went to

  689. the cross

  690. this is

  691. why we

  692. can and

  693. we do

  694. say jesus

  695. died for

  696. us

  697. he was

  698. representing

  699. us on

  700. that cross

  701. look at the

  702. language of

  703. the bible

  704. god shows

  705. his love

  706. for us

  707. in that

  708. while we

  709. were still

  710. sinners

  711. christ died

  712. for us

  713. for us

  714. for the

  715. love of

  716. christ

  717. controls us

  718. because we

  719. have concluded

  720. this that

  721. one has

  722. died for

  723. all

  724. therefore all

  725. have died

  726. he himself

  727. bore our

  728. sins in

  729. his body

  730. on the

  731. tree

  732. so let

  733. me ask

  734. you did

  735. you die

  736. on the

  737. cross

  738. in one

  739. sense no

  740. praise god

  741. i didn't die

  742. on the cross

  743. because i

  744. could never

  745. do that

  746. only jesus

  747. could have

  748. done that

  749. he was

  750. the substitute

  751. in place

  752. of me

  753. jesus was

  754. replacing me

  755. on that

  756. cross

  757. but in

  758. another in

  759. another sense

  760. did you die

  761. on the cross

  762. yes

  763. because he

  764. was representing

  765. you he

  766. had your

  767. name in his

  768. heart carrying

  769. you on his

  770. shoulders and

  771. your sin in

  772. his body

  773. and so you

  774. were united

  775. to him

  776. on that

  777. cross

  778. this is why

  779. paul says

  780. we have

  781. been united

  782. with him

  783. in a

  784. death like

  785. his

  786. and so

  787. what is

  788. happening on

  789. the cross

  790. can be

  791. described in

  792. three words

  793. again i want

  794. to teach you

  795. new words

  796. here what

  797. happened on

  798. the cross

  799. was penal

  800. substitutionary

  801. atonement

  802. so you might

  803. have heard

  804. these words

  805. before it

  806. just means

  807. that on

  808. the cross

  809. jesus was

  810. the propitiation

  811. for our

  812. sins

  813. he took

  814. the penalty

  815. that demands

  816. the penalty

  817. of god's

  818. wrath

  819. penal

  820. he did

  821. it in

  822. our place

  823. representing

  824. us

  825. substitutionary

  826. and that

  827. death

  828. what did

  829. it achieve

  830. atonement

  831. and so

  832. there's a lot

  833. that we can

  834. say about

  835. the cross

  836. but this

  837. is the

  838. heart

  839. of it

  840. this is

  841. just the

  842. utter

  843. beauty

  844. of it

  845. and it's

  846. really shaped

  847. and appreciated

  848. but when we

  849. understand

  850. that this

  851. isn't random

  852. jesus worked

  853. it didn't

  854. come out

  855. of nowhere

  856. it's not a

  857. mathematical

  858. transaction

  859. either

  860. no

  861. he is a

  862. priest

  863. who offers

  864. the sacrifice

  865. of himself

  866. to achieve

  867. the propitiation

  868. of god's

  869. wrath

  870. and what

  871. does he

  872. achieve for

  873. us

  874. we now

  875. have

  876. atonement

  877. i'll end

  878. there and

  879. i'll open

  880. up to

  881. questions

  882. you
