  1. Money and success won't make you happy or content.

  2. !

  3. I was rich. I had everything.

  4. I guess it's like the old songs about movie and pop stars who want to commit suicide.

  5. They have everything and yet they are so unhappy.

  6. It is true. I had nothing on the inside.

  7. We could quote film star after music icon after business tycoon and they would have a similar tale.

  8. All the money, no peace.

  9. All the success, no contentment, no satisfaction.

  10. Mick Jagger was right all those years ago.

  11. Mick Jagger was also right that we try and we try and we try to find it in all the same places.

  12. We still believe that money and success are the answer.

  13. Because we believe that we are the exception to the rule.

  14. You see, money and success won't make you happy and content.

  15. It's advice that we hear all the time but we think that we would actually be okay with it.

  16. If we were trusted with it, if we had money, if we had success, we wouldn't fall for those old trip wires that everyone else tripped over.

  17. All the testimonies are the same.

  18. They don't work.

  19. You get money, they solve one problem, they create another.

  20. You get success, it solves one problem, it creates many others.

  21. We think though that we're the exception.

  22. If we just had those things, we'd be content.

  23. We'd be happy.

  24. We would have that inner peace that we're all striving for.

  25. And so we just follow the same path.

  26. It is, when you think about it, the definition of madness.

  27. And part of the reason it is just so crazy, so crazy to live that way, so crazy to continue down the same path that everybody says don't make you happy, don't deliver contentment.

  28. And the people that have got the things that we think if we had them, they'd make us content, they say it doesn't make you content.

  29. The reason why it is so crazy to live this way is that actually satisfaction and contentment and peace and joy are actually available.

  30. You see, the longings that we have for these things aren't some cruel trick that our hearts play on us.

  31. Those desires and longings that are there exist because in God's design, there is actually a way that they can be met.

  32. And that is in relationship with Him.

  33. You see, we were made for God.

  34. And it's true.

  35. All of us know this.

  36. The Christian life is beset in the present by frustration and struggle.

  37. Yes.

  38. However, many of us, most of us, if we're absolutely honest with ourselves, we know that those who follow Christ can and do know contentment of some degree and joy of some degree in our lives.

  39. But more than that, we know that those things in their fullness, contentment and joy and peace, those things in their fullest sense are our future.

  40. That's what the writer to the Hebrews is describing when he talks about rest in our passage this evening.

  41. Quoting Psalm 95, talking about God's people in an earlier generation, he says, chapter 3, verse 11,

  42. As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  43. He talks again in 4, verse 3.

  44. Can you see?

  45. The good news came to, for he who has believed, for we who have believed, enter that rest.

  46. As he has said, as I swore in my wrath, they shall never enter my rest.

  47. The rest that the they that he's talking about failed to receive was the peace and prosperity of Canaan, the promised land.

  48. But the writer to the Hebrews is applying this to his first century hearers and the future that they look forward to.

  49. He is holding out to them, entering his rest.

  50. His rest is the state that God is in eternally.

  51. You see, before God created the world, he was at rest.

  52. That's how he describes his perfect communion of love and joy as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  53. He entered time to create our world, his work of creation.

  54. And when he had completed that work, he rested.

  55. So one commentator says this, quote,

  56. The goal of human existence, here it is, here's why we all exist.

  57. The goal of human existence is a share in God's own glory.

  58. It is stated explicitly in chapter 2, verse 10, that God is leading, do you remember last week, many sons to glory.

  59. And this must mean a share in God's own way of existing, a participation in God's own presence and power.

  60. This rest is therefore to live as God lives, end quote.

  61. Life in the presence of the supremely wonderful, supremely joyful, supremely content God.

  62. That's actually what we talk about when we talk about eternal life.

  63. You know, when we talk to people about, put your faith in Jesus Christ and you'll receive eternal life.

  64. That can sound a bit like you'll receive existence for a very long time.

  65. Now, eternity is a very long time.

  66. But that is what we're talking about when we talk about the life of eternity.

  67. When we come to Christ, this is what we receive.

  68. This is what we look forward to.

  69. Life in the presence of the supremely wonderful, joyful, content God.

  70. And the perfect fullness of this, and the full experience of this,

  71. is what we look forward to as God's children, as we were described last week as brothers of Jesus.

  72. Now, for most of us, that future day is a long way off.

  73. At least we hope it's a long way off.

  74. And this text reminds us that if we're going to partake of this rest, we need to persevere to the end.

  75. Chapter 3, verse 6.

  76. Can you see?

  77. And we are Christ's house, that is, we belong to Him,

  78. if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

  79. Look down 3, verse 14.

  80. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  81. He's saying you've got to keep going.

  82. If you want this rest, you've got to keep going.

  83. But the truth is, like these first hearers, we're beset by temptation.

  84. Temptation from within, temptation from without.

  85. And the thought of struggling on for 2 or 3 or 4 or hopefully 5 or 6 more decades,

  86. well, it feels like an impossible task.

  87. Yes, we want the contentment.

  88. We want the joy.

  89. But how do we get there?

  90. That's the question that we're dealing with this evening.

  91. The contentment, the joy, the rest, sharing in the presence and the power of God.

  92. That is what is held out to us.

  93. That's what we're looking forward to.

  94. How do we get there?

  95. Well, Hebrews 3 and 4 tell us.

  96. The answer runs right through these chapters, and it's this.

  97. We get there by faithfulness.

  98. We get there by choosing faith and choosing obedience to Christ

  99. and by rejecting the alternative, which is unbelief.

  100. To make this point, Hebrews has us learn the lesson of history,

  101. the history of God's people.

  102. And the author says first,

  103. If we're going to get there,

  104. first of all, we must hold fast to the faithful son.

  105. We must hold fast to the faithful son.

  106. That's chapter 3, verses 1 to 6.

  107. 3, verse 1.

  108. Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling,

  109. consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,

  110. who was faithful to him, who appointed him,

  111. just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house.

  112. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses,

  113. as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.

  114. As those who are in Christ's family,

  115. we are called to consider or to contemplate Jesus.

  116. And to do so because he is both, do you see,

  117. our apostle and our high priest.

  118. Now, that's an interesting phrase

  119. because it's the only place in the Bible

  120. where Christ is called an apostle.

  121. The word we heard this morning means sent one.

  122. So an apostle is sent,

  123. and he is sent with the authority and the commission of the one who does the sending.

  124. So Christ's apostle, apostles, the 12,

  125. they were sent out by him and they had his authority.

  126. That's what we saw in Acts 9 this morning.

  127. Here, though, Christ is the apostle.

  128. So what's going on there?

  129. Well, it is he has been sent by God the Father

  130. and represents God to us.

  131. At the same time, he's also called our high priest.

  132. That is, as one of us,

  133. he is to represent us to God.

  134. The priests were chosen from among the people

  135. and stood before the people to represent them to God.

  136. So for Christ to be our apostle and high priest

  137. means that he represents God perfectly to us

  138. and us perfectly to God.

  139. So when it comes to thinking about your standing before God,

  140. in Christ you have one who has been faithful to his calling

  141. and he has done all that you need.

  142. Boys and girls, how much is left for you to pay?

  143. Zero.

  144. Zero.

  145. He has done all that you need.

  146. And that, I want to say, just to be clear,

  147. that is where our journey to glory, to rest, must start.

  148. If you want to know God,

  149. if you want to be in relationship to the God of all the earth,

  150. you need to put your faith in Jesus.

  151. One of the most compelling invitations that Jesus makes

  152. during his earthly ministry

  153. is when he calls people who were stubbornly rejecting him

  154. in Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  155. And he says this,

  156. very familiar to many of us.

  157. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

  158. and I will give you rest.

  159. That's the offer.

  160. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  161. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  162. and you will find rest for your souls.

  163. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  164. Rest for your soul.

  165. No religious system.

  166. No secular vision of life.

  167. No spiritual practice can give you this deep, enduring soul rest.

  168. But because he is a faithful apostle and high priest,

  169. Jesus restores us to the relationship where this rest is available.

  170. That's why, in the context of chapter 3, he is greater than Moses.

  171. Remember, Moses is the great hero of those who want to go back to the old shadows of old covenant Judaism.

  172. The author uses the image of a house.

  173. 3 verse 4,

  174. Remember at the start of this series,

  175. I talked about this lesser to the greater argument,

  176. that you see again and again and again in the book of Hebrews.

  177. Here it is again.

  178. So he's not saying,

  179. Moses was bad,

  180. Jesus is good,

  181. old covenant bad,

  182. new covenant good.

  183. Both are described, you see here, as faithful.

  184. Moses was faithful in all God's house.

  185. Christ is faithful over God's house.

  186. Both are faithful.

  187. But Moses was a servant in God's house.

  188. Therefore, how much more greater,

  189. and worthy of glory is Christ as a son.

  190. Moses was faithful as a servant.

  191. His ministry pointed forward to Christ.

  192. Christ is greater than Moses because he brings a better, fuller salvation.

  193. We see this in that Christ is both the builder of God's house and Lord over the house.

  194. And the house that he's talking about here,

  195. the house that he built,

  196. was composed of people.

  197. Do you remember in 1 Peter chapter 2,

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  198. as you come to him,

  199. a living stone rejected by men,

  200. but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

  201. you yourselves,

  202. like living stones,

  203. are being built up as a spiritual house

  204. to be a holy priesthood,

  205. to offer spiritual sacrifices

  206. acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

  207. He's talking to a congregation of the people of God

  208. and he's saying,

  209. you're a spiritual house.

  210. You're building blocks that have been built together

  211. into God's house.

  212. When it comes to the Christian house,

  213. there are three classes of people.

  214. Some are never in the house.

  215. They have no interest in the house.

  216. They don't go to the house.

  217. They don't knock the door or nothing.

  218. They're never in the house.

  219. Others look like they're in the house for a while.

  220. They behave like they belong for a time,

  221. but then they walk away.

  222. Then there are those who truly belong,

  223. the elect of God.

  224. And they are those,

  225. verse 6 of chapter 3,

  226. who remain holding fast their confidence to the end.

  227. See what he's saying?

  228. Jesus is greater than Moses,

  229. so hold fast to the faithful son.

  230. So you go from here.

  231. I say to you,

  232. hold fast to the faithful son.

  233. You say,

  234. great,

  235. I'm going to hold fast to the faithful son.

  236. What does that look like?

  237. Thanks for asking.

  238. Point number two,

  239. here's what we do.

  240. Cultivate a faithful heart.

  241. If the first point is,

  242. he says,

  243. hold fast to the faithful son.

  244. The second point,

  245. how do we do that?

  246. We cultivate a faithful heart.

  247. And there are two key aspects

  248. of what this means.

  249. The first is this.

  250. Heed God's word today.

  251. Heed God's word today.

  252. You can't miss the refrain from Psalm 95

  253. running all the way through.

  254. Chapter 3, verse 7.

  255. Chapter 3, verse 15.

  256. Chapter 4, verse 6.

  257. Today, if you hear his voice,

  258. do not harden your hearts,

  259. as in the rebellion.

  260. The word today, here,

  261. is used most often

  262. in the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy,

  263. where the people are told

  264. of the demands of the covenant

  265. on them today.

  266. Deuteronomy 4,

  267. particularly,

  268. repeated there.

  269. Here,

  270. the book of Hebrews,

  271. God is speaking by his son.

  272. Remember,

  273. chapter 1, verse 1.

  274. And again,

  275. chapter 3, verse 7,

  276. by his spirit,

  277. through the scriptures.

  278. And because God is outside of time,

  279. his word is always today.

  280. And the emphasis here

  281. on listening,

  282. hearing,

  283. and responding in faith

  284. is to us in the moment.

  285. You see,

  286. this is not what the people

  287. in the wilderness did.

  288. Look at verse 8.

  289. Today, if you hear his voice,

  290. do not harden your hearts,

  291. as in the rebellion

  292. on the day of testing

  293. in the wilderness,

  294. where your fathers put me

  295. to the test

  296. and saw my works

  297. for 40 years.

  298. Therefore,

  299. I was provoked

  300. with that generation

  301. and said,

  302. they always go astray

  303. in their heart.

  304. They have not known my ways.

  305. I said at the beginning,

  306. the author here

  307. is taking us

  308. on a history lesson,

  309. as it were,

  310. from the people of God

  311. under the old covenant.

  312. And he's saying,

  313. when the people of old

  314. rebelled against God,

  315. they were faithless

  316. in three ways.

  317. He outlines it there.

  318. Verse 8,

  319. they hardened their hearts.

  320. In the Bible,

  321. the heart is the seat

  322. of both knowledge

  323. and choice.

  324. And to speak of it

  325. being hardened in this way

  326. is to describe

  327. a conscious choice

  328. to refuse to hear

  329. and to refuse

  330. to obey God's word.

  331. That's what it means.

  332. A hard heart,

  333. that's how a hard heart

  334. is expressed,

  335. to refuse to hear

  336. and obey God.

  337. Secondly,

  338. their hearts

  339. went astray.

  340. Verse 10,

  341. this has the sense

  342. of allowing their hearts

  343. to wander morally,

  344. to be led off

  345. after sin and foolishness.

  346. Their decision was,

  347. actually over here

  348. looks better,

  349. I'm going to go

  350. in this direction.

  351. I'm going to believe

  352. the promises

  353. of the culture over here

  354. and I'm going to go

  355. in that direction.

  356. Their hearts went astray

  357. and then thirdly,

  358. they saw,

  359. verse 10,

  360. three verse 10,

  361. and they saw God's ways

  362. and ignored them.

  363. See,

  364. he says there,

  365. they have not known

  366. my ways.

  367. Their not knowing there

  368. isn't about ignorance,

  369. isn't about knowledge.

  370. They saw what God did

  371. among his people.

  372. They knew that he had

  373. given them his law

  374. for how they should

  375. live to please him.

  376. It's about rebellious

  377. disobedience.

  378. It's about saying,

  379. I know what God says

  380. and I'm going to do

  381. something else.

  382. And that's what

  383. the people did.

  384. God was speaking today,

  385. in the moment,

  386. in the present,

  387. and that was how

  388. the people responded.

  389. They were faithless

  390. rather than faithful.

  391. And that is why

  392. he was angry

  393. with that generation.

  394. That is why

  395. he refused

  396. to bring them

  397. into his rest.

  398. That is why

  399. they did not get

  400. to the rest

  401. that lay ahead of them.

  402. And our author

  403. applies the same

  404. warning to the Hebrews

  405. as he does to us

  406. today.

  407. 3 verse 12.

  408. Take care,

  409. brothers,

  410. lest there be

  411. in any of you

  412. an evil,

  413. unbelieving,

  414. that is,

  415. faithless heart,

  416. leading you to fall

  417. away from the living

  418. God.

  419. But exhort one another

  420. every day,

  421. as long as it is

  422. called today,

  423. that none of you

  424. may be hardened

  425. by the deceitfulness

  426. of sin.

  427. He's saying,

  428. watch out.

  429. If you refuse

  430. the word of God,

  431. if you don't receive

  432. it with faith,

  433. if you consistently

  434. choose folly,

  435. making bad choices

  436. that lead you

  437. away from God,

  438. and if knowing

  439. how God's word

  440. calls you to live,

  441. you choose another

  442. route,

  443. you're in danger

  444. of falling away

  445. from Christ.

  446. Watch out.

  447. So,

  448. we need to take

  449. an honest heart check,

  450. don't we?

  451. If you play around

  452. with sin,

  453. you cannot expect

  454. to persevere

  455. to glory.

  456. You will fall

  457. away.

  458. You will forfeit

  459. your rest,

  460. just like

  461. 3, 16 to 18,

  462. those in the Old Testament.

  463. Their example is

  464. very sobering.

  465. Look at verse 16.

  466. For those,

  467. for who were those

  468. who heard

  469. and yet rebelled?

  470. Was it not all

  471. those who left

  472. Egypt,

  473. led by Moses?

  474. Who was it

  475. that rebelled?

  476. Some who'd

  477. experienced

  478. the glories

  479. of the Exodus.

  480. They'd seen

  481. firsthand

  482. the miraculous

  483. rescue through

  484. the Red Sea.

  485. God had done

  486. great things

  487. in their time.

  488. But they hardened

  489. their hearts

  490. and wandered away

  491. and so fell

  492. in the desert.

  493. You hear people

  494. say from time

  495. to time,

  496. if God just

  497. turned up

  498. and showed

  499. himself in a

  500. miraculous way

  501. in my life,

  502. well then,

  503. I would absolutely

  504. follow him

  505. no matter what.

  506. That's what I want.

  507. If he did that,

  508. then I'd be able

  509. to believe

  510. and I wouldn't

  511. be so faithless

  512. or I wouldn't

  513. struggle in the

  514. way that I do.

  515. Well,

  516. that's not true.

  517. That's not true

  518. because those

  519. who left

  520. Egypt,

  521. led by

  522. Moses,

  523. did the same.

  524. Imagine talking

  525. to one of them.

  526. Say to them,

  527. were you actually

  528. there?

  529. Did you see

  530. the sea part?

  531. Oh yeah,

  532. I walked

  533. through the Red Sea.

  534. Dry land.

  535. We got to the

  536. other side,

  537. we all sang hymns.

  538. Thinking back

  539. actually,

  540. it was quite a

  541. thing now that

  542. you mention it.

  543. Well,

  544. that's quite a

  545. story to tell.

  546. Do they get you

  547. up at church

  548. to share that

  549. and talk about

  550. what it was like?

  551. Well,

  552. I don't really

  553. go to church

  554. anymore,

  555. to be honest.

  556. It was a bit

  557. tough in those

  558. early days in the

  559. wilderness.

  560. We had some

  561. struggles as a

  562. family and to be

  563. honest,

  564. I found the

  565. preaching after a

  566. while didn't

  567. really connect

  568. with me.

  569. Plus,

  570. we were trying

  571. to make things

  572. work and I

  573. needed to provide

  574. and I was

  575. working very hard.

  576. I needed to be

  577. on the road a

  578. fair bit.

  579. looking back

  580. now,

  581. it was quite

  582. impressive,

  583. but I'm in a

  584. different place

  585. now.

  586. Is that even

  587. possible?

  588. It sounds

  589. absurd,

  590. doesn't it?

  591. That's what

  592. Hebrews tells us

  593. happens.

  594. That's how

  595. deceitful our

  596. hearts can be.

  597. None of us

  598. can presume

  599. on past

  600. experience

  601. or the

  602. soundness

  603. of our

  604. church.

  605. These guys

  606. heard Moses

  607. preach to them.

  608. or the

  609. ministers

  610. we've heard.

  611. These guys

  612. heard Moses

  613. preach to them.

  614. Whatever it

  615. might be that

  616. we think,

  617. well,

  618. because I

  619. grew up in

  620. that family

  621. or I went

  622. to that

  623. church or

  624. was part

  625. of that

  626. group or

  627. I read

  628. that translation

  629. of the

  630. Bible or

  631. whatever it

  632. might be,

  633. we cannot

  634. presume on

  635. the basis

  636. of those

  637. things that

  638. we are in

  639. the right

  640. with God.

  641. How do

  642. you know

  643. that you're

  644. in the right

  645. with God?

  646. You hear

  647. his voice

  648. and today

  649. you heed

  650. what it

  651. says

  652. and you

  653. follow it

  654. wherever it

  655. leads

  656. no matter

  657. what.

  658. That's

  659. actually the

  660. basis of

  661. what it

  662. means to

  663. believe.

  664. Chapter 4

  665. verse 3,

  666. have a look.

  667. 4 verse 3,

  668. for good news

  669. came to us

  670. just as them,

  671. them being a

  672. wilderness

  673. generation,

  674. but the

  675. message they

  676. heard did

  677. not benefit

  678. them because

  679. they were not

  680. united by faith

  681. to those who

  682. listen.

  683. For we who

  684. have believed

  685. enter that

  686. rest.

  687. the root

  688. of all

  689. of our

  690. problems

  691. is that

  692. we believe

  693. other things

  694. over God's

  695. word.

  696. He speaks

  697. to us in

  698. scripture.

  699. Today we

  700. open it up

  701. and we

  702. read it

  703. and then we

  704. do what our

  705. first parents

  706. did in the

  707. garden.

  708. We say,

  709. did God

  710. really say

  711. that thing?

  712. Does what

  713. appears to be

  714. absolutely

  715. crystal clear

  716. and obvious

  717. here really

  718. mean what it

  719. says?

  720. because you

  721. know,

  722. I really

  723. like living

  724. this way

  725. and what I

  726. read here

  727. seems to

  728. rule that

  729. out,

  730. so it

  731. can't mean

  732. that.

  733. There are

  734. scandalous

  735. and really

  736. obvious ways

  737. that people

  738. do that,

  739. but all of

  740. us,

  741. if we're

  742. honest with

  743. ourselves,

  744. are tempted

  745. in that

  746. direction.

  747. We battle

  748. hard,

  749. wandering,

  750. faithless

  751. hearts,

  752. and so we

  753. need to

  754. watch out.

  755. God's voice

  756. has never been

  757. more accessible

  758. to us

  759. than it is

  760. now.

  761. You can

  762. listen to

  763. it,

  764. you can

  765. read it,

  766. you can

  767. access it

  768. in all

  769. kinds of

  770. different

  771. formats,

  772. listen to

  773. it today

  774. and heed

  775. what it

  776. says.

  777. Now the

  778. author knows

  779. heed God's

  780. word today,

  781. that's how

  782. you cultivate

  783. a faithful

  784. heart,

  785. that's the

  786. first step,

  787. but the

  788. author knows

  789. that we

  790. can't do

  791. this on

  792. our own,

  793. and he

  794. doesn't

  795. expect us

  796. to either.

  797. The second

  798. aspect of

  799. cultivating a

  800. faithful heart,

  801. 313,

  802. exhort one

  803. another every

  804. day as long

  805. as it is

  806. called today,

  807. that none

  808. of you may

  809. be hardened

  810. by the

  811. deceitfulness

  812. of sin.

  813. The first

  814. aspect of

  815. cultivating a

  816. faithful heart

  817. is heed

  818. God's word

  819. today,

  820. the second

  821. is heed

  822. God's word

  823. together.

  824. You were

  825. never meant

  826. to make

  827. the pilgrimage

  828. to glory,

  829. to your rest

  830. on your own,

  831. because you

  832. wouldn't be

  833. able to do

  834. it on your

  835. own.

  836. Some of you

  837. think you

  838. will,

  839. but you're

  840. wrong,

  841. sin is really

  842. deceitful,

  843. and we are

  844. all really

  845. prone to

  846. being self

  847. deceived.

  848. The house

  849. that God

  850. built is

  851. the church.

  852. If you

  853. belong to

  854. that house,

  855. you should

  856. belong in a

  857. meaningful way

  858. to a local

  859. church.

  860. We all

  861. need to

  862. belong to

  863. a group of

  864. people who

  865. will exhort

  866. us every

  867. day that

  868. God gives

  869. us breath.

  870. As long

  871. as there

  872. are days

  873. called

  874. today,

  875. we need

  876. one another

  877. to exhort

  878. us towards

  879. a deeper

  880. and a more

  881. faithful

  882. devotion to

  883. him.

  884. alongside

  885. that,

  886. the clearest

  887. foretaste

  888. of that

  889. future

  890. rest is

  891. experienced

  892. now when

  893. we gather

  894. each

  895. Lord's

  896. Day.

  897. 4 verse

  898. 9,

  899. there remains

  900. a Sabbath

  901. rest for

  902. those who

  903. have entered

  904. the rest

  905. of belonging

  906. to Christ.

  907. You enter

  908. your rest

  909. when you

  910. put your

  911. faith in

  912. Jesus,

  913. but there

  914. remains a

  915. Sabbath

  916. rest that

  917. future

  918. day,

  919. and it

  920. is on

  921. the Lord's

  922. Day when

  923. we come

  924. together

  925. under the

  926. preaching of

  927. God's

  928. Word.

  929. Look at

  930. chapter 4

  931. verse 12.

  932. For the

  933. Word of

  934. God is

  935. living and

  936. active,

  937. sharper than

  938. any two-edged

  939. sword,

  940. piercing to

  941. the division

  942. of soul

  943. and of

  944. spirit,

  945. of joints

  946. and of

  947. marrow,

  948. and discerning

  949. the thoughts

  950. and intentions

  951. of the

  952. heart.

  953. And no

  954. creature is

  955. hidden from

  956. his sight,

  957. but all

  958. are naked

  959. and exposed

  960. to the

  961. eyes of

  962. him to

  963. whom we

  964. must give

  965. account.

  966. Where is

  967. the two-edged

  968. sword of

  969. God's Word

  970. unleashed in

  971. the context

  972. where God

  973. has promised

  974. that he

  975. will visit

  976. that by

  977. his Spirit?

  978. It is when

  979. the church

  980. gathers.

  981. And it is

  982. here where

  983. that work

  984. is going

  985. on,

  986. where the

  987. Spirit of

  988. God

  989. recalibrates

  990. our hearts

  991. to keep

  992. us going

  993. so that we

  994. make it

  995. to glory.

  996. I want to

  997. suggest that

  998. the main

  999. today of

  1000. Hebrews 4

  1001. is the

  1002. today of

  1003. the Lord's

  1004. Day.

  1005. There is

  1006. nowhere more

  1007. important than

  1008. you can be

  1009. on a Sunday.

  1010. Look at the

  1011. work that is

  1012. happening,

  1013. verse 12,

  1014. when God's

  1015. Word is

  1016. opened and

  1017. proclaimed,

  1018. piercing to

  1019. the division

  1020. of soul

  1021. and spirit,

  1022. joints and

  1023. marrow,

  1024. discerning the

  1025. thoughts and

  1026. intentions of

  1027. the heart.

  1028. It is there

  1029. that we

  1030. bring our

  1031. hearts,

  1032. we lay our

  1033. hearts bare

  1034. before God's

  1035. Word.

  1036. He searches

  1037. us,

  1038. He recalibrates

  1039. us and

  1040. changes us

  1041. and urges

  1042. us on to

  1043. glory.

  1044. If you're

  1045. holding fast

  1046. to the

  1047. faithful Son,

  1048. you have

  1049. entered your

  1050. rest.

  1051. You know a

  1052. measure of

  1053. contentment and

  1054. satisfaction and

  1055. joy, but there

  1056. remains a

  1057. rest that you

  1058. don't want to

  1059. miss.

  1060. You don't want

  1061. to miss.

  1062. So we must

  1063. strive on.

  1064. Allow God's

  1065. living and

  1066. active Word to

  1067. search us, to

  1068. search us together

  1069. each Lord's Day

  1070. and to cultivate

  1071. a heart of

  1072. faith that

  1073. listens and

  1074. obeys Him all

  1075. the way to

  1076. glory, all the

  1077. way to

  1078. contentment in

  1079. its fullest

  1080. sense, to

  1081. joy in its

  1082. fullest sense, to

  1083. the rest of

  1084. the power and

  1085. presence of

  1086. God.

  1087. Let me say

  1088. in closing a

  1089. word to

  1090. those among

  1091. us who are a

  1092. bit more

  1093. sensitive.

  1094. Now these

  1095. warnings exist

  1096. here because

  1097. our hearts are

  1098. prone to

  1099. wander, but I

  1100. know that some

  1101. of you are

  1102. prone to

  1103. doubt.

  1104. And you

  1105. worry, chapter

  1106. 3, verse

  1107. 12, that you

  1108. have an evil,

  1109. unbelieving heart

  1110. that's going to

  1111. lead you to

  1112. fall away from

  1113. the living God.

  1114. You worry that

  1115. you're not really

  1116. a Christian.

  1117. You stumble, you

  1118. get up again, you

  1119. think, right, I'm

  1120. going to keep

  1121. going towards

  1122. glory and

  1123. towards this

  1124. rest, and you

  1125. stumble again and

  1126. you think, maybe

  1127. I'm not a

  1128. Christian.

  1129. Saving faith, faith

  1130. that will get you

  1131. to glory, looks to

  1132. Christ and His

  1133. promises.

  1134. It looks to

  1135. Christ and His

  1136. promises.

  1137. It doesn't focus on

  1138. the presence or the

  1139. absence of faith

  1140. itself.

  1141. So the idea, me

  1142. believing is not the

  1143. object of faith, Christ

  1144. is.

  1145. So yes, if you

  1146. think about it like

  1147. this, out of your

  1148. peripheral vision, by

  1149. all means ask the

  1150. question, do I trust

  1151. Christ?

1152. Am I aware of my

1153. sin in the way I

  1154. should be?

  1155. Do I believe that

  1156. Christ died for my

  1157. sins and rose again

  1158. for my justification?

1159. Do I repent of sin

  1160. when I know that I'm

  1161. aware of it?

  1162. Look at those

  1163. questions out of your

  1164. peripheral vision.

  1165. But as you look

  1166. straight on and look,

  1167. you must look to

  1168. Christ and trust Him.

1169. He is the object of

  1170. your faith.

  1171. Remember what the

  1172. children were told a

  1173. few minutes ago.

  1174. What has He done

1175. that is left for you

  1176. to do?

  1177. Zero.

  1178. He took it all.

  1179. Look to Christ and

  1180. keep trusting Him and

  1181. don't overthink it.

  1182. Martin Luther, the

  1183. great reformer,

  1184. said this, do you

  1185. doubt whether you're

  1186. elected to salvation?

  1187. Then say your prayers,

  1188. man, and you may

  1189. conclude that you are.

1190. It is as easy as that.

  1191. Let's pray together.
