  1. The singer-songwriter Jason Isbell, American kind of country rock, may not have heard of him.

  2. He wrote a song called Maybe It's Time. You might have come across that song if you're not a Jason Isbell fan in the film.

  3. A Star is Born when Bradley Cooper sang it. Eddie Vedder, formerly of Pearl Jam, he does a nice version as well by the way.

  4. It's on YouTube. But this song, Maybe It's Time, reflects on how hard it is to change your life for the better in your own strength.

  5. How difficult it is to actually make changes in your life so that things move in a more positive direction.

  6. Maybe it's time to let the old ways die. It takes a lot to change a man. It takes a lot to try.

  7. Maybe it's time to let the old ways die.

  8. The lyrics speak about how simplistic some people's view of life is.

  9. And it is actually especially dismissive of the Christian faith that I think probably Jason Isbell grew up with.

  10. But that repeated line, Maybe it's time to let the old ways die, could be the theme tune of the book of Hebrews.

  11. Hebrews. The first hearers of the book were looking back to the old ways, to their old religion, their old forms of worship, their old covenant structures, and they wanted to go back.

  12. And the writer's message is, Maybe it's time to let the old ways die.

  13. Well, actually, more accurately, there's no maybe about it.

  14. But it's time to let the old ways die.

  15. The old VHS religion, if you were here last week, has to die, he's saying.

  16. And the reason is, the reason why the old ways need to die is because Jesus is better.

  17. Way better.

  18. And this evening of chapter 8, we move into a new section of the book where that word, better, is going to come up again and again.

  19. And chapter 8 tells us specifically that he is a better priest who mediates a better covenant.

  20. That's what we're looking at this evening.

  21. He's a better priest who mediates a better covenant.

  22. Now, why is that relevant?

  23. Well, let's go to our first point.

  24. Jesus is a better priest, and the author tells us, because he works in heaven.

  25. That's verses 1 to 5.

  26. Do you notice in those first five verses, the author is fixated on Jesus' location?

  27. Now, the point of what we're saying is this.

  28. We have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven,

  29. a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

  30. Now, we labored through chapter 7 through Melchizedek last week, and verse 1 tells us,

  31. here's the point of what we've just been saying.

  32. Here's the point.

  33. You want to know what the point of the Melchizedek chapter is?

  34. For all of its kind of complexity and confusion, here's the point.

  35. We have the great high priest that we need who will fit us for God's presence.

  36. Now, we've seen again and again in this section that the author keeps quoting Psalm 110 with the invitation there for the Lord to sit at my right hand.

  37. The Lord says to the Lord, God the Father to God the Son, to take his seat in that position of authority and rule.

  38. And here in chapter 8, we're told that this has taken place.

  39. He has done this.

  40. We have such a high priest, one who has taken his seat at the right hand of the majesty.

  41. And where is that majestic one?

  42. In heaven.

  43. Verse 2, Jesus and minister.

  44. Where?

  45. In the holy places.

  46. In the true tabernacle of God.

  47. Back in chapter 4, we're told we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens.

  48. In chapter 6, we see Jesus as our forerunner who has entered the inner place behind the curtain as the high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

  49. And last week, we saw chapter 7, verse 25, he is exalted above the heavens, above the skies.

  50. Where is Jesus now?

  51. Where is he now?

  52. As we gather here, he's in heaven.

  53. He is ministering as our priest in the very presence of God.

  54. Earthly high priests.

  55. They were appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices on behalf of their people.

  56. Verse 3, Jesus as our priest after Melchizedek.

  57. Has offered himself as our sacrifice.

  58. We'll say more on that, Lord willing, next week.

  59. But this is why he sits down at the right hand of the Father.

  60. His sacrificial offering has dealt with every sin.

  61. His work of atonement has been completed.

  62. When he cried out, it is finished.

  63. From the cross, it was.

  64. And so he sits down.

  65. But his ministry is also one of intercession.

  66. 7.25 again.

  67. He ever lives to intercede for us.

  68. He is mediating between us and the Father.

  69. It's like he applies in heaven the ongoing effectiveness of his once-for-all sacrifice,

  70. day after day, before the Father.

  71. When we sin, he steps in as our advocate.

  72. It's almost as if you can imagine he goes,

  73. Father, I have dealt with their sin.

  74. When we call out to our Father, think of those times when you're confused,

  75. when you're trying to pray and you're confused,

  76. or you find yourself rambling,

  77. or you find yourself not really able to say the things that you need to say,

  78. or even not able to say anything.

  79. Sometimes we're so heartbroken that we sit down to pray.

  80. Sometimes life is so complicated that we go to God and we can't say anything.

  81. Well, when we call out to our Father,

  82. or when we come into his presence in silence,

  83. the Lord Jesus perfects those prayers,

  84. the longings of our heart as they are directed to him,

  85. and those are heard in the very throne room of heaven.

  86. Through our union with Christ,

  87. that's what the New Testament tells us again and again.

  88. We put our faith in Christ, we are united to him.

  89. And through that union,

  90. our communion with God has a heavenly aspect.

  91. We experience it here in the day-to-day,

  92. down here in the grit and the grime of life on earth,

  93. life in London,

  94. but it has a real expression in heaven.

  95. Because our priest is in heaven representing us there.

  96. And we'll hear more on that, as I say, hopefully in coming weeks,

  97. but this also especially means that there is a sense in which,

  98. through the Spirit, we are gathered now in the presence of heaven.

  99. As I say, we'll hear more of that later.

  100. But that heavenly aspect of our priest's work,

  101. it's so important.

  102. This is what he is developing here, the author, at the beginning.

  103. This is what Christ's priestly work means,

  104. here and now.

  105. But why is that better?

  106. Why is that better than the old order of things?

  107. You're not asking that question?

  108. I'm asking that question.

  109. So he's in heaven.

  110. All right, so what?

  111. Well, it's better because the author tells us

  112. that Christ's ministry there in heaven is reality.

  113. Look at verse 5.

  114. The old priests, they serve a copy and a shadow of the heavenly things.

  115. For when Moses was about to erect the tent,

  116. he was instructed by God, saying,

  117. See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.

  118. Moses, you remember,

  119. Moses was given the pattern for the tabernacle and for the priesthood,

  120. based on what God had shown him on the mountain.

  121. He had been given, we're told, in Exodus 25 to 30,

  122. a pattern to follow.

  123. And the construction that was built,

  124. the priesthood that was instituted,

  125. were based on the heavenly reality.

  126. The earthly priesthood, in one sense,

  127. you look around and the earthly priesthood looks very real.

  128. However, it was a copy.

  129. Think of it like an artist's sketch of a building.

  130. That sketch is the building, in a sense.

  131. And depending on the artist's talent, it might look impressive.

  132. When you go to an art gallery and look at a drawing or a portrait,

  133. it could be stunningly good.

  134. But it's still only a copy of the real thing.

  135. The real thing is somewhere else.

  136. And the earthly priesthood was also a shadow.

  137. Now, we know there is no such thing as a shadow

  138. without the substance to create the shadow.

  139. If I put my hand kind of here,

  140. I can see a shadow on the lectern.

  141. The light is there.

  142. But there's a reality that creates the shadow.

  143. The shadow isn't the real thing,

  144. but it is connected to the real thing.

  145. So the old priesthood, the old priesthood was not the real thing.

  146. But like a shadow points to the existence of the substance,

  147. its existence pointed to something real that cast the shadow.

  148. And that reality is Christ and His priestly work in heaven.

  149. Now, with this, the implication is obvious.

  150. Now that we have the reality,

  151. there's no need for the copy.

  152. When the building has been built, there's no need for the drawing.

  153. No one stands in a new building and pours over the architect's drawing.

  154. Don't worry about that.

  155. Look at the drawing.

  156. No one experiences the reality of something and says,

  157. Oh, I wish the shadow of that reality was still here.

  158. That is why Christ is a better priest.

  159. In contrast to the limits of earthly priests,

  160. He ministers in the reality of heaven,

  161. in the true tabernacle,

  162. in the presence of God.

  163. And this is why Jesus is the priest that we all need.

  164. Any form of religion or philosophy

  165. that is entirely focused in the here and now

  166. may have some temporal benefits.

  167. There may be things that an earthly religion

  168. can do for you in terms of creating discipline in your life,

  169. in terms of creating a community

  170. that you can be part of.

  171. And there are temporal benefits for that.

  172. But it is always going to have limits

  173. because it doesn't penetrate to the reality of heaven.

  174. We live in a world where there is a reality above us

  175. and that is the reality of heaven.

  176. The phrase you sometimes hear,

  177. they're so heavenly minded that they're no earthly use.

  178. You've heard it.

  179. You may have even used it.

  180. It is something that people say to describe often a Christian

  181. who is usually a bit naive and a bit out of touch

  182. with the experiences of life down here

  183. in the real world where we live.

  184. The truth is,

  185. if you are genuinely heavenly minded,

  186. you are engaged in the real world.

  187. Because that's where real business is done with God

  188. and it is there and only there

  189. where the real issues of life,

  190. the universe, and everything are resolved.

  191. Jesus is the better priest

  192. because he works in heaven.

  193. But it doesn't stop there.

  194. His ministry is linked to the covenant

  195. that God has made with his people.

  196. So as the better priest,

  197. he also mediates,

  198. point number two,

  199. a better covenant.

  200. Because he works in us.

  201. It's our second point.

  202. He mediates a better covenant

  203. because he works in us.

  204. Verse six,

  205. for if that first covenant had been faultless,

  206. there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

  207. For he finds fault with them when he says,

  208. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,

  209. when I will establish a new covenant

  210. with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

  211. Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers

  212. on the day when I took them by the hand

  213. to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

  214. For they did not continue in my covenant,

  215. and so I showed no concern for them,

  216. declares the Lord.

  217. The Lord found fault with the old covenant.

  218. The old system had a flaw.

  219. Not that there was a problem with his law

  220. or what that law pointed to.

  221. The flaw wasn't in the covenant as such,

  222. but in the people.

  223. Do you see?

  224. For he finds fault with them.

  225. Verse eight,

  226. the fault was on the people's side of the covenant

  227. because they were unable to keep its requirements.

  228. But the prophet Jeremiah promised many years earlier

  229. that the days were coming.

  230. Days that when the author is writing this,

  231. that have now come in these last days.

  232. Chapter one,

  233. where the shadow covenant will give way

  234. to a real heavenly covenant

  235. which is founded on better promises.

  236. And these are better because they are promises

  237. that actually deal with us.

  238. They're better because they take our sin into account.

  239. Indeed, they are promises

  240. that overcome our sinfulness.

  241. How is that the case?

  242. Well, in the new covenant,

  243. God gets to work inside us.

  244. Verse 10, do you see?

  245. For this is the covenant

  246. I will make with the house of Israel

  247. after those days, declares the Lord.

  248. I will put my law into their minds

  249. and write them on their hearts,

  250. and I will be their God,

  251. and they shall be my people.

  252. Under the old covenant,

  253. the law was written on tablets of stone

  254. out there externally.

  255. In the new,

  256. it is etched on hearts.

  257. It is etched on minds

  258. and written on hearts.

  259. It's common to hear people say

  260. that the old covenant

  261. was all about what a person did.

  262. All ritual and external practices.

  263. Whereas in the new,

  264. it's all about the internal,

  265. what God does in you

  266. and how you respond.

  267. But the truth is

  268. that God has always cared more

  269. about the heart

  270. behind the actions of his people

  271. than he has the actions

  272. for their own sake.

  273. Sincere faith has always been

  274. a matter of the heart.

  275. That's not a point of difference.

  276. But in the eyes of the author of Hebrews,

  277. the old covenant was unable

  278. to adequately accomplish

  279. this heart transformation.

  280. Luke Timothy Johnson

  281. in his commentary says this,

  282. What is needed is the participation

  283. of God's Son

  284. on the side of humans

  285. as their anchor of hope

  286. and pledge of the covenant.

  287. What is different

  288. is not the desired end,

  289. but the divine agency

  290. to accomplish that end.

  291. What he's saying is this,

  292. the obedience from the heart

  293. which was expected

  294. under the old covenant

  295. is accomplished by God

  296. in the new.

  297. In the new covenant,

  298. we have the promise

  299. of God's work in us

  300. by his Spirit

  301. to transform our minds

  302. and hearts

  303. and to draw us

  304. into relationship with him.

  305. I will be their God

  306. and they shall be my people.

  307. That is the covenantal pledge

  308. that God makes

  309. all the way through

  310. the Old Testament.

  311. But now,

  312. the ability for us

  313. to keep the terms

  314. of the covenant

  315. is granted

  316. through the new hearts

  317. and the transformed minds

  318. that God himself

  319. has given.

  320. the relationship

  321. that we were created for

  322. is now possible

  323. because God gives us

  324. a new heart

  325. to love and serve him.

  326. You cannot obey God

  327. apart from this internal work.

  328. But here's the thing.

  329. When you turn from your sin

  330. and put your faith in Christ,

  331. this is what he does for us.

  332. He transforms us

  333. from the inside.

  334. Do you know that

  335. you can really know God?

  336. You can really know him.

  337. All of the striving

  338. and all of the effort

  339. of those who think

  340. that religion is a good idea

  341. is an attempt to connect

  342. with reality in some way.

  343. Everybody that you see

  344. that is devoted to religion

  345. in some way or other

  346. is trying to connect

  347. with reality in some way

  348. to find real answers

  349. to the problems of life.

  350. All of the rejection of God

  351. that came with secularism

  352. is just another way

  353. of searching for truth

  354. and meaning

  355. in this world

  356. that we live in.

  357. People reject the idea

  358. of God

  359. because they think

  360. he is a fantasy

  361. or an irrelevance.

  362. But the promise

  363. of the new covenant

  364. is that you can know

  365. the God who created

  366. all that we have and see.

  367. You can know the God

  368. who defines reality.

  369. You can really,

  370. and have a look,

  371. verse 11,

  372. personally know him.

  373. And they shall teach

  374. each one his neighbor

  375. and each one his brother

  376. saying,

  377. Know the Lord

  378. for they shall all know me

  379. from the least of them

  380. to the greatest.

  381. Old Israel

  382. knew God

  383. in contrast

  384. to the other nations

  385. who were described

  386. as not following him,

  387. not knowing him.

  388. But this was a limited knowledge

  389. and it was a knowledge

  390. that they could lose

  391. in the sense

  392. that Hosea could say

  393. of the people

  394. in his day

  395. that,

  396. Hosea 4, verse 1,

    Hosea 4:1

  397. there was no knowledge

  398. of God in the land.

  399. But to know God,

  400. we talk about

  401. knowing God,

  402. that is to recognize him,

  403. to trust him,

  404. and obey him.

  405. And the point here

  406. is that under

  407. the new covenant,

  408. God's people are enabled

  409. to do this

  410. by God himself.

  411. New covenant believers

  412. have a direct

  413. and personal knowledge

  414. of him.

  415. It's not just kings

  416. that have that access.

  417. It's not just judges

  418. that have that access.

  419. And it's not just

  420. for a time either

  421. as we saw

  422. under the old covenant,

  423. but from the least

  424. to the greatest,

  425. every man,

  426. woman,

  427. boy,

  428. or girl

  429. who puts their faith

  430. in Christ,

  431. the better priest,

  432. is drawn into

  433. this relationship.

  434. Do you hear that,

  435. boys and girls,

  436. this evening?

  437. That applies to you.

  438. If you put your faith

  439. in Christ,

  440. the better priest,

  441. you're drawn into

  442. a relationship

  443. with the living God.

  444. You can know him

  445. and you can know him

  446. personally.

  447. The question is,

  448. how is this possible?

  449. How can sinful,

  450. rebellious people

  451. become children of God?

  452. How can we know

  453. and trust

  454. and be in relationship

  455. with a holy God?

  456. Well, it's because

  457. of what Jeremiah says

  458. in the climax

  459. of this promise.

  460. Look at verse 12.

  461. Here it is.

  462. How is it possible?

  463. For I will be merciful

  464. towards their iniquities

  465. and I will remember

  466. their sins

  467. no more.

  468. This pronouncement

  469. is repeated again

  470. in chapter 10,

  471. verse 17.

  472. It is the basis

  473. on which

  474. all that is held out

  475. to us,

  476. that is a new heart,

  477. a personal relationship

  478. with God,

  479. an immediate relationship

  480. with God,

  481. all of that is possible.

  482. The mercy of God

  483. in forgiveness

  484. is the reason why.

  485. The mercy of God

  486. to you

  487. in forgiveness

  488. for your sins.

  489. He sees our sin

  490. and He covers it.

  491. Again,

  492. forgiveness was present

  493. under the old covenant,

  494. but not like this.

  495. Not like this.

  496. In the new covenant,

  497. forgiveness is both

  498. personal

  499. and universal.

  500. That is,

  501. it is for every individual

  502. who knows the Lord

  503. and it covers

  504. every sin

  505. of those

  506. who receive

  507. the new heart

  508. that Christ's ministry gives.

  509. Just look.

  510. Just look at the extent

  511. of this mercy.

  512. He remembers

  513. our sin

  514. no more.

  515. Think of even

  516. the last few sins

  517. that you've committed.

  518. Even the last few,

  519. never mind everyone.

  520. Christ has taken them away

  521. and God has no recollection

  522. of them.

  523. Does this mean

  524. He has amnesia?

  525. Is God forgetful?

  526. No.

  527. So there is a plea

  528. that is repeated

  529. a number of places

  530. in the Old Testament.

  531. Psalm 25,

  532. 6 and 7.

  533. Remember your mercy,

  534. O Lord,

  535. and your steadfast love,

  536. for they have been

  537. from of old.

  538. Remember not

  539. the sins of my youth

  540. or my transgressions

  541. according to your steadfast love.

  542. Remember me

  543. for the sake

  544. of your goodness,

  545. O Lord.

  546. That's the plea

  547. and Jeremiah's

  548. new covenant promises

  549. that God is going

  550. to grant that request.

  551. God won't remember

  552. your sin

  553. but He will remember you.

  554. In Christ's new covenant

  555. it really is a case

  556. of God forgiving

  557. and forgetting.

  558. He won't remember

  559. your sin

  560. but He will remember you.

  561. What a relief.

  562. What a relief.

  563. How many of you

  564. are all twisted up

  565. out of shape,

  566. antsy,

  567. uncomfortable,

  568. describe it how you will,

  569. because of guilt?

  570. You feel guilt

  571. and shame

  572. about things

  573. that you've done

  574. and whatever you've tried

  575. to do,

  576. those things,

  577. that sense of guilt

  578. and shame

  579. clings to you

  580. the way food smells

  581. in a greasy cafe

  582. cling to you.

  583. You just can't seem

  584. to shake them off.

  585. I know for some of you

  586. it's almost like

  587. you can't remember

  588. what it feels like

  589. to enjoy yourself.

  590. You've forgotten

  591. what freedom feels like.

  592. Well,

  593. here's the promise

  594. that will lift

  595. your burden.

  596. The mercy of God

  597. is for you.

  598. And just as He remembers

  599. your sin no more,

  600. so you must take Him

  601. at His word

  602. and leave it behind.

  603. Sometimes I hear people say,

  604. look,

  605. I know God forgives me,

  606. I just can't forgive myself.

  607. And they remain stuck

  608. in their misery.

  609. Well,

  610. in that case,

  611. what that person

  612. is really saying is,

  613. I don't really believe

  614. that God can forgive me.

  615. If that's you,

  616. can I say,

  617. it's time for you

  618. to take God

  619. at His word.

  620. If you have put

  621. your faith in Christ,

  622. your sin has been dealt with.

  623. Every last one.

  624. All of it.

  625. And God is not like us.

  626. When we've been wronged,

  627. we love to hold it

  628. against others.

  629. We love to keep

  630. that thing in mind

  631. and hold it over them again.

  632. Gives us a bit of a power

  633. over them.

  634. When we've been wronged,

  635. we cannot let it go

  636. and we can hold it over others

  637. and we can tut

  638. and shake our heads

  639. and say,

  640. well,

  641. there you go again.

  642. God is not like that.

  643. When God forgives us,

  644. the matter is finished

  645. and we are reconciled.

  646. He won't bring it up again.

  647. What a relief.

  648. What a relief.

  649. Isn't that an astonishing thing?

  650. If you have put your faith in Christ,

  651. every single sin

  652. has been dealt with.

  653. But in closing,

  654. I want to be clear.

  655. This liberty,

  656. this joy,

  657. this relief

  658. is only on offer

  659. to people who see their need.

  660. Every other religion

  661. or philosophy in the world

  662. tells us what we need to do

  663. in order to fix our lives ourselves.

  664. Christianity is only for those

  665. who see that they can't fix

  666. their lives themselves.

  667. It is only for those

  668. who admit that we've made

  669. a mess of things

  670. and we have no plea before God

  671. except our great high priest,

  672. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  673. We've made a terrible mess of things

  674. and we do not have what it takes.

  675. We don't have the wisdom.

  676. We don't have the influence.

  677. We don't have the money.

  678. We don't have the ability.

  679. Whatever it is,

  680. we can't sort our lives out ourselves.

  681. If you think that you're okay,

  682. there is nothing for you here.

  683. But if you know you need

  684. the mercy of God,

  685. come on in.

  686. Jesus Christ flings wide

  687. the doors of His mercy for you.

  688. He has died

  689. and been raised

  690. to deal with all of your sin

  691. and He will take it off your shoulders.

  692. He will take it off your conscience.

  693. He will take it off your record

  694. before God

  695. and He'll welcome you

  696. into His family.

  697. So can you see?

  698. Can you see why it's better?

  699. Why we need to let the old ways die.

  700. Whether it is old forms of religion

  701. or it is any other kind of thing

  702. that might be drawing us away from Christ,

  703. there is nothing else

  704. because nothing else

  705. can penetrate to the reality of heaven,

  706. can do business with the living God

  707. on our behalf.

  708. and nothing else gets to work inside us

  709. but the high priestly ministry of Jesus

  710. by His Holy Spirit.

  711. Leave your sin

  712. at the foot of the cross.

  713. Leave it there

  714. and don't think about it again.

  715. Let the old ways die.

  716. Come and welcome to Christ.

  717. Let's pray.

  718. Let's pray.
