  1. Acts chapter 15 is where we are today. It's the centre of the book. We're kind of halfway.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  2. ! But in many ways Acts 15 is the centre of our faith. Acts 15 addresses what is the core of Christianity.

  3. It talks about an issue that if you take it out of Christianity, the whole movement kind of comes crumbling down.

  4. It's 15 years have passed since Acts chapter 2. 15 years ago the Holy Spirit came upon the church and we have seen in the book of Acts the gospel go out from Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria to the ends of the earth.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  5. The last two chapters saw Paul and Barnabas spreading the gospel all over Asia Minor but the churches are still very young and very fragile.

  6. Any major disruption could cause the movement to spiral.

  7. And this chapter involves key places, key people and a critical time.

  8. In terms of places you've got Jerusalem. It's like the religious epicentre of the world.

  9. It's where all the core leaders are located.

  10. What happened in Jerusalem on a religious level had implications all over the world.

  11. All across the Middle East. All across Asia.

  12. It's a bit like Westminster.

  13. And so decisions that are made in Westminster, well the rest of the country we feel the force of them.

  14. On the other side there's Antioch, another city.

  15. And Antioch is the kind of cultural, social, economic force of the time.

  16. It's a cosmopolitan crossroads.

  17. And it was a key place for the gospel movement of those who weren't Jewish.

  18. It's a bit like kind of Hollywood really.

  19. The kind of cultural centre.

  20. And Hollywood decides on something and that spreads all across the globe doesn't it?

  21. And Antioch was a bit like that.

  22. It was the kind of cultural centre of the world.

  23. Trends in Antioch affected all over the place.

  24. And at the centre of this newfound faith you have Jerusalem with Jewish believers.

  25. You have Antioch with the non-Jewish believers.

  26. Paul and Barnabas are sent off on their missionary journey from the church in Antioch.

  27. And when they come back from their journey they land right where they started.

  28. But it wasn't just places that are important in Acts 15.

  29. And there are people.

  30. Giants of the faith.

  31. Heavyweights like Paul and Barnabas.

  32. Like Peter and James.

  33. The big beasts of Christianity.

  34. And all of this leads up to one main issue.

  35. There's lots of things you can look at in Acts 15.

  36. But I want to focus in on one issue.

  37. So there are four parts of the story.

  38. And they all begin with D.

  39. A demand.

  40. A debate.

  41. A decision.

  42. A delivery.

  43. A demand.

  44. A debate.

  45. Delivery.

  46. A decision.

  47. And then delivery.

  48. So the first few verses of Acts 15.

  49. There are grey clouds and a storm is brewing.

  50. It's got the potential to fracture the Christian movement.

  51. And it all revolves around a demand in verses 1 to 5.

  52. There are a few guys that come up from Jerusalem to Antioch.

  53. Where tons of Gentiles are being saved by the good news of Jesus Christ.

  54. But they don't come up with encouragement.

  55. They come up with a demand.

  56. And they basically say if you want to be in God's family.

  57. Believing in Jesus is not enough.

  58. You've got to follow the laws of Moses.

  59. And you've got to be circumcised.

  60. The claim is that to follow Jesus is not enough.

  61. But you have to adopt the Jewish customs to be a real Christian.

  62. And it threatens the very foundation of the Christian message.

  63. The gospel is good news.

  64. We have great news for this city.

  65. And the good news is that Jesus has done all the work.

  66. Jesus has paid all the price.

  67. So that sinners like you and I can be saved from the penalty of sin.

  68. And be brought back into a relationship with God.

  69. Into the family of God.

  70. Jesus has done it all.

  71. And the gospel is free.

  72. This morning you don't have to do anything to earn your right.

  73. Into the family of God.

  74. Paul and Barnabas have risked their lives spreading the good news.

  75. That people could have a relationship with God again.

  76. That there's a door that was opened for them.

  77. Opened by the Lord Jesus.

  78. And there's nothing that you can do.

  79. And there is nothing more to be done.

  80. But this group come from Jerusalem.

  81. And they say well actually to enter into God's family.

  82. You've got to become Jewish.

  83. To be a real follower of God.

  84. You've got to become Jewish.

  85. Imagine you've got a friend who works for Legoland.

  86. Children have you been to Legoland?

  87. You've been?

  88. Or have you been?

  89. So imagine you've got a friend who works for Legoland.

  90. And he comes to you and he says.

  91. Here are some tickets for your family.

  92. Go to Legoland on me.

  93. Probably want to throttle him.

  94. But he says to the family.

  95. Go to Legoland on me.

  96. Free tickets for the entire family.

  97. You can go whenever you want.

  98. You kind of work hard to clear your schedule.

  99. You put it on the family diary.

  100. And so you can take all the family there.

  101. Everyone is super excited to spend a day at Legoland.

  102. You get everyone ready to go.

  103. You pack your lunch.

  104. You queue up in the enormous queue.

  105. And the person at the gate says.

  106. Ah come on in.

  107. Welcome to Legoland.

  108. You're riding the rides.

  109. You're enjoying the displays.

  110. You're loving the day.

  111. It's a wonderful time.

  112. And then somebody from Legoland.

  113. Who's employed by Legoland.

  114. Comes up to you and says to you.

  115. Can I see your tickets?

  116. You hand the free tickets over.

  117. And they say.

  118. They say.

  119. I'm really sorry.

  120. But you either have to leave now.

  121. Or you have to pay the full price.

  122. Can you imagine the confusion?

  123. And the frustration.

  124. You say.

  125. No, no, no.

  126. Our friend.

  127. They gave us these free tickets.

  128. They work for Legoland too.

  129. And the person says.

  130. No, you either have to leave now.

  131. Or you need to pay the full price.

  132. For the whole family.

  133. And you're thinking.

  134. Who am I supposed to believe?

  135. Am I supposed to believe my friend.

  136. Who works for Legoland.

  137. Who gave me the free tickets.

  138. Or am I supposed to be.

  139. Believing this person.

  140. You say.

  141. Is there no one else.

  142. I can talk to.

  143. Can I speak to a manager?

  144. Is there anyone higher up.

  145. That I can speak to?

  146. We've sacrificed a lot.

  147. To be here.

  148. We've cleared our schedule.

  149. We're enjoying our time.

  150. It would be so confusing.

  151. Wouldn't it?

  152. Well the Gentile Christians.

  153. In Antioch.

  154. Were probably feeling that.

  155. Times a million.

  156. It was deeply unsettling.

  157. For them.

  158. To hear.

  159. That they had to become.

  160. Jewish people.

  161. In order to be true Christians.

  162. Who do you believe?

  163. Do you believe.

  164. Paul and Barnabas.

  165. Who told us the message.

  166. Or do you believe.

  167. These people.

  168. Who've come from HQ.

  169. Who are coming on the scene.

  170. Who seem to have authority.

  171. Who do you believe.

  172. Can you imagine.

  173. Being told.

  174. You have a free gift.

  175. And then afterwards.

  176. Being told.

  177. No.

  178. You've got to pay a steep price.

  179. Not just a financial one.

  180. But one that would affect.

  181. The whole of your life.

  182. From now on.

  183. I'm sure there were loads of men.

  184. In this group.

  185. Desperately hoping.

  186. That the.

  187. The Jerusalem delegation.

  188. Was wrong.

  189. The issue is so central.

  190. It couldn't be.

  191. Ignored.

  192. It couldn't be.

  193. Accommodated.

  194. And so.

  195. Paul and Barnabas.

  196. Quickly confront these guys.

  197. Because they're.

  198. Out of line.

  199. With God's way.

  200. And God's message.

  201. The demand.

  202. Become.

  203. To become Jewish.

  204. Would fracture.

  205. The early church.

  206. But if Jerusalem.

  207. And the leaders.

  208. Of the church.

  209. There in Jerusalem.

  210. Agreed.

  211. With the people.

  212. That had been sent.

  213. It would mean.

  214. There would have to be a break.

  215. There would have to be.

  216. A fracturing.

  217. There was no way.

  218. That these two things.

  219. Could go forward together.

  220. Either the gospel.

  221. Was a message.

  222. Of free.

  223. Unimaginable grace.

  224. Or it was.

  225. That you had to become Jewish.

  226. People could not.

  227. Coexist.

  228. There's a lot on the line.

  229. And so.

  230. What would.

  231. The leaders.

  232. In Jerusalem.

  233. Where would they stand.

  234. On this issue.

  235. The Pharisees.

  236. That is the religious authorities.

  237. Weren't just challenging.

  238. The doctrine.

  239. Of grace alone.

  240. But they're also challenging.

  241. Aren't they?

  242. The credibility.

  243. Of Paul and Barnabas.

  244. And so the church.

  245. In Antioch.

  246. They get a convoy.

  247. Convoy together.

  248. They get a delegation.

  249. With Paul and Barnabas.

  250. And they send them.

  251. Up to Jerusalem.

  252. 200 miles away.

  253. They stop.

  254. At different places.

  255. On the way.

  256. And they share.

  257. About what God.

  258. Has been doing.

  259. Among the Gentiles.

  260. They are.

  261. They are pumped.

  262. About it.

  263. And once they arrive.

  264. In Jerusalem.

  265. They're received.

  266. Well by the church.

  267. There.

  268. And again.

  269. They share.

  270. What God has been doing.

  271. All over Asia Minor.

  272. So are the Pharisees.

  273. Going to be right.

  274. Demanding.

  275. That all people.

  276. Become Jewish first.

  277. In order.

  278. To enter into the family.

  279. Of God.

  280. That's the demand.

  281. Here's the debate.

  282. The debate is in verses 6 to 11.

  283. If you look there.

  284. The debate begins.

  285. People from different.

  286. Side starts speaking up.

  287. There's probably a good deal.

  288. Of energy in the room.

  289. And commotion.

  290. And Peter.

  291. Takes the stage.

  292. Steps up to the mic.

  293. Peter reflects back.

  294. His experience.

  295. From a few years ago.

  296. When God showed him.

  297. That the Gentiles.

  298. Are to be included.

  299. In God's family.

  300. Remember Cornelius.

  301. He said.

  302. The Gentile.

  303. Who asked Peter.

  304. To come down.

  305. And Peter.

  306. Comes and goes into his house.

  307. And he starts preaching.

  308. And as he preaches.

  309. The Holy Spirit.

  310. Descends.

  311. On this.

  312. Non-Jew.

  313. This Gentile.

  314. Cornelius.

  315. And all his family.

  316. Before they were ever circumcised.

  317. Before anything had happened.

  318. God gave them.

  319. The Holy Spirit.

  320. Just as he'd given.

  321. The Holy Spirit.

  322. To the Jewish people.

  323. In Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  324. God had made.

  325. No distinction.

  326. On who he was going to.

  327. Pour his grace on.

  328. Notice how Peter.

  329. Again and again.

  330. Shows that God.

  331. Is the initiator.

  332. Of his work.

  333. Verse 7.

  334. God chose.

  335. Peter.

  336. To speak to the Gentiles.

  337. Verse 8.

  338. At the beginning.

  339. We see that God.

  340. Is the one.

  341. Who knows people's hearts.

  342. It is God.

  343. Who bears witness.

  344. To the Gentiles.

  345. It is God.

  346. Who gave the Gentiles.

  347. The Holy Spirit.

  348. It is God.

  349. Who made no distinction.

  350. Among them.

  351. It is God.

  352. Who cleansed their hearts.

  353. By faith.

  354. Over and over.

  355. Peter.

  356. Is emphasizing.

  357. And trying to hammer home.

  358. That it is God.

  359. Who initiates.

  360. God.

  361. Who chooses.

  362. God.

  363. Who pursues.

  364. God.

  365. Who rescues.

  366. God.

  367. Who bears witness to.

  368. God.

  369. Who provides.

  370. God.

  371. Who cleanses.

  372. The Gentiles.

  373. And so.

  374. If anyone is going to oppose.

  375. The Gentiles.

  376. Coming into the family of God.

  377. They are not just opposing.

  378. Paul and Barnabas.

  379. They are opposing God himself.

  380. And so.

  381. God.

  382. If God.

  383. Did not distinguish.

  384. Between Jew.

  385. And Gentile.

  386. How in the world.

  387. Why would we?

  388. Chop it off.

  389. Peter.

  390. Shows that.

  391. He is a.

  392. He is a Jew.

  393. Is saved.

  394. In the same way.

  395. As the Gentile.

  396. Look at verse 11.

  397. we believe that we will be saved

  398. through the grace of the Lord Jesus,

  399. just as they will be.

  400. There aren't two ways to God.

  401. There is only one way to God.

  402. And so this is the last we hear of Peter.

  403. Start of Luke's Gospel,

  404. he's just an ordinary fisherman.

  405. Until Jesus comes on the scene

  406. and encounters Peter,

  407. he invites him to be part of what he's doing.

  408. Jesus takes him along in his movement,

  409. this movement that changes the landscape of the world.

  410. But when Jesus is arrested,

  411. Peter denies him.

  412. He's ashamed of being associated with Jesus.

  413. Quickly, Peter realises his error.

  414. He confesses he was wrong and he comes back.

  415. In the book of Acts,

  416. it is Peter who preaches at Pentecost.

  417. It is through Peter

  418. that God brings thousands into his family.

  419. And then he uses Peter to spread the Gospel message.

  420. An ordinary fisherman

  421. used for global purposes in God's movement.

  422. The debate's just getting started.

  423. Verse 12,

  424. Paul and Barnabas,

  425. they've just got back from their missionary journey,

  426. recounting how Gentiles

  427. are believing the Gospel

  428. and it's spreading like wildfire.

  429. They talk about how people are being healed

  430. and they wrap up.

  431. And as they wrap up,

  432. one of the most influential men

  433. in the whole of the council

  434. in the Church of Jerusalem

  435. gets to his feet.

  436. It's James.

  437. He's the half-brother of Jesus.

  438. He's well respected.

  439. The way that James goes

  440. will largely affect how the council goes.

  441. And so like this heavyweight champion,

  442. James comes with poise and carefulness.

  443. And James wants Jewish and Gentile Christians

  444. to be united.

  445. He threads the delicate needle

  446. of including Gentiles

  447. without making the Jewish people feel excluded.

  448. He doesn't want to put an unnecessary burden

  449. on the Gentiles.

  450. But at the same time,

  451. he doesn't want the Jewish Christians

  452. to feel alienated.

  453. Where Peter and Paul and Barnabas,

  454. they reflect what God has been doing

  455. in these last 12 years.

  456. James takes another approach.

  457. He goes back 700 years.

  458. He quotes from the Old Testament

  459. and he says,

  460. there's going to be a time coming

  461. when there would be a great restoration

  462. for the world.

  463. This rebuilding time.

  464. And it wouldn't only be for Jewish people

  465. but for Gentiles too.

  466. God was going to gather a people

  467. from the nations.

  468. From all over the world.

  469. And so James tells the Gentiles,

  470. he tells the Jews in council

  471. that the Gentiles have always been part of God's plan.

  472. The very scriptures that the Jewish people

  473. hold in high regard

  474. teaches them

  475. that the Gentiles

  476. don't have to become Jewish

  477. in order to be saved.

  478. They don't have to fulfill

  479. any ceremonial sacrificial laws.

  480. But James knows

  481. this would be a hard pill to swallow

  482. for some of the Jewish people.

  483. They would have wondered,

  484. if this doesn't matter,

  485. does anything matter?

  486. And so James winsomely

  487. weaves in a few thoughts

  488. to encourage

  489. the Gentile Christians

  490. to avoid this.

  491. Look what he says in verse 20.

  492. He says,

  493. but write to them

  494. to abstain

  495. from the things polluted by idols

  496. and from sexual immorality

  497. and from what has been strangled

  498. and from blood.

  499. Why does James put these four things down?

  500. Are these things

  501. that the Gentile Christians

  502. have to do

  503. in order to be saved?

  504. No.

  505. Not at all.

  506. But James' vision

  507. is that the church of Jesus Christ

  508. would be a unified church

  509. across the world.

  510. It would be filled with

  511. Jewish people

  512. and Gentile people

  513. who have come to know

  514. the Lord Jesus Christ

  515. and they've come together

  516. to know him.

  517. It's an issue

  518. for the Jewish people

  519. scattered.

  520. Where they are,

  521. they're a minority.

  522. And maintaining purity

  523. for the Jewish people

  524. was for them

  525. a matter of survival.

  526. and part of their identity.

  527. One of the bedrocks

  528. of the community

  529. was eating a meal together.

  530. There would have been

  531. no way

  532. would therefore

  533. Jewish Christians

  534. with very strict

  535. dietary requirements

  536. to sit and share a meal

  537. with Gentile Christians

  538. who don't

  539. follow the same.

  540. It's a bit like

  541. having vegans

  542. in church life.

  543. And so

  544. I want to say to you

  545. if you're a vegan here

  546. you're very, very welcome.

  547. But you've got to admit

  548. it's a pretty hard work

  549. having you for lunch.

  550. It's the type of thing

  551. that's happening here

  552. amongst the Gentile

  553. and the Jewish Christians.

  554. The Gentile Christians

  555. they're free to eat

  556. whatever they want.

  557. But the Jewish Christians

  558. by their conscience

  559. they're more restricted

  560. in their diet.

  561. James knows this.

  562. He knew they wouldn't be able

  563. to share a meal together.

  564. It shows us the importance

  565. of hospitality

  566. sitting around the table.

  567. He wanted them to be able

  568. to come together

  569. in unity.

  570. So he says

  571. Gentile Christians

  572. if you can abstain

  573. from certain foods

  574. it'll make it much easier

  575. to be united

  576. with your Jewish

  577. brothers and sisters.

  578. You don't have to

  579. become Jewish

  580. to be saved.

  581. That would be hypocrisy.

  582. But be mindful

  583. of your brothers and sisters

  584. who are Jewish.

  585. There are things

  586. that you might do

  587. that would be a huge

  588. stumbling block from them.

  589. So abstain from certain foods

  590. from foods

  591. for idols.

  592. Respect them

  593. in their situation.

  594. Accommodate to their needs.

  595. And as it relates

  596. to sexual immorality

  597. pagan temples

  598. scattered all over the land.

  599. Keep away from them.

  600. James says here

  601. the Apostle Paul says

  602. over and over again

  603. in his letters

  604. stay away from sexual immorality.

  605. That's not the way of God.

  606. He doesn't say this

  607. so that you can

  608. earn away

  609. to God.

  610. He's saying

  611. if you're a follower

  612. of the Lord Jesus

  613. you've got to let go

  614. of those pagan ways

  615. and follow God alone.

  616. Peter, Paul,

  617. Barnabas and James

  618. have all come

  619. to the place

  620. in this debate

  621. firmly landing

  622. with Jesus.

  623. Showing that

  624. anyone can be saved

  625. by God's grace alone.

  626. Number three

  627. the decision.

  628. Verse 22 to 29

  629. the council decides

  630. to write a letter.

  631. The letter is from

  632. the entire church

  633. in Jerusalem

  634. the leaders

  635. and the apostles.

  636. It is binding

  637. on other churches.

  638. They are of one accord.

  639. The letter begins

  640. by recognizing

  641. the tense situation

  642. in Antioch.

  643. They're unsettled.

  644. There's a stir

  645. being created

  646. because of these people

  647. that have come up

  648. from Jerusalem

  649. demanding that they

  650. become Jewish.

  651. Paul and Barnabas

  652. would have been

  653. so grateful

  654. for this letter

  655. that said

  656. these guys

  657. didn't come from us.

  658. They do not speak

  659. with the authority

  660. of the church.

  661. Tells those

  662. in Antioch

  663. that Paul and Barnabas

  664. they are dear brothers

  665. who risked their lives

  666. for the gospel.

  667. The church

  668. in Jerusalem

  669. the church council

  670. has decided

  671. that Paul and Barnabas

  672. were doing it

  673. the right way.

  674. The letter continued

  675. that key representatives

  676. are being sent

  677. along with them

  678. with this critical

  679. decision

  680. based on

  681. the Holy Spirit's

  682. direction.

  683. And the voices

  684. on the council

  685. the decision

  686. of the council

  687. which was binding

  688. was that there

  689. would be no

  690. further requirement

  691. to be followed

  692. except believing

  693. in the Lord Jesus

  694. Christ.

  695. Let me just say

  696. as an aside

  697. they didn't say

  698. did they

  699. and we're all

  700. independent churches

  701. alright

  702. you knock yourselves

  703. out in Antioch

  704. you decide what's best

  705. have a vote on it

  706. you decide

  707. that's not how

  708. it worked.

  709. There is

  710. isn't there

  711. there is an

  712. authority here

  713. with the elders

  714. that is obviously

  715. the prototype

  716. of a presbytery

  717. where decisions

  718. are made

  719. which are binding

  720. on all the

  721. congregations

  722. and so this

  723. decision is made

  724. based on the

  725. Holy Spirit's

  726. direction

  727. there is no

  728. further requirement

  729. to enter into

  730. God's family

  731. except to believe

  732. in the Lord Jesus

  733. Christ.

  734. You want to be

  735. in God's family

  736. this morning

  737. all you have

  738. to do

  739. is receive

  740. God's grace

  741. in Jesus Christ.

  742. You do not

  743. have to become

  744. Jewish

  745. there is no

  746. need for you

  747. to follow

  748. all the ceremonial

  749. laws

  750. but as James

  751. has already laid

  752. out there's a

  753. deep unity

  754. isn't there

  755. there's a deep

  756. oneness

  757. with our Jewish

  758. brothers and

  759. sisters in Christ

  760. and so abstain

  761. from sexual

  762. morality

  763. food offered

  764. to idols

  765. it's remarkably

  766. isn't it

  767. that the

  768. Jerusalem

  769. council

  770. came to

  771. a unified

  772. decision

  773. I think

  774. it's remarkable

  775. in our

  776. house

  777. somebody says

  778. what do you

  779. want to watch

  780. that decision

  781. takes ages

  782. there's all

  783. sorts of

  784. debate

  785. when the

  786. meal planner

  787. is not up

  788. to date

  789. and somebody

  790. says and

  791. what do you

  792. want to

  793. eat

  794. there's

  795. carnage

  796. debate

  797. goes on

  798. for ages

  799. but here

  800. there's a

  801. debate with

  802. great consequence

  803. one belief

  804. that is

  805. central for

  806. the great

  807. gospel movement

  808. and there's

  809. unity

  810. among the

  811. council

  812. the story

  813. concludes in

  814. Antioch and

  815. there's

  816. delivery

  817. fourth day

  818. verses 30

  819. to 33

  820. the leaders

  821. from the

  822. church in

  823. Jerusalem

  824. come up

  825. and they

  826. deliver this

  827. wonderful

  828. news

  829. a church

  830. that has

  831. been confused

  832. is now

  833. given clarity

  834. and encouraged

  835. that you

  836. and I

  837. can be

  838. restored

  839. to a

  840. relationship

  841. with the

  842. God

  843. who made

  844. us

  845. by believing

  846. in Jesus

  847. Christ alone

  848. and that

  849. is the

  850. good news

  851. of the

  852. gospel

  853. I can

  854. imagine

  855. that

  856. congregation

  857. was overjoyed

  858. I can

  859. imagine

  860. the men's

  861. group were

  862. absolutely

  863. delighted

  864. that they

  865. didn't have

  866. to get

  867. circumcised

  868. so Luke

  869. is establishing

  870. that the

  871. gospel

  872. which is

  873. moving

  874. throughout

  875. this

  876. region

  877. it's

  878. rooted

  879. in the

  880. promises

  881. of the

  882. Old

  883. Testament

  884. but you

  885. are not

  886. required

  887. to become

  888. Jewish

  889. belief

  890. in the

  891. Lord

  892. Jesus

  893. is the

  894. only

  895. requirement

  896. to be

  897. part of

  898. his

  899. family

  900. trust

  901. in the

  902. Lord

  903. Jesus

  904. reliance

  905. on the

  906. Lord

  907. Jesus

  908. is the

  909. only

  910. requirement

  911. to be

  912. part of

  913. his

  914. family

  915. you don't

  916. have to

  917. fulfill

  918. a long

  919. list of

  920. requirements

  921. you don't

  922. have to

  923. cover a

  924. prerequisite

  925. course

  926. you don't

  927. have to

  928. clean

  929. yourself

  930. up this

  931. morning

  932. Jesus

  933. says

  934. come

  935. to me

  936. all you

  937. who are

  938. burdened

  939. and heavy

  940. laden

  941. and I

  942. will give

  943. you rest

  944. there

  945. is

  946. nothing

  947. that you

  948. can

  949. do

  950. to earn

  951. your way

  952. to God

  953. there is

  954. nothing

  955. that you

  956. have

  957. done

  958. that need

  959. keep you

  960. away from

  961. knowing

  962. God

  963. and being

  964. rescued

  965. from the

  966. penalty

  967. of your

  968. sin

  969. it is

  970. all

  971. accomplished

  972. through

  973. Jesus

  974. Christ

  975. Jesus

  976. Christ

  977. has done

  978. it all

  979. and so

  980. what do

  981. we learn

  982. four things

  983. about the

  984. gospel as we

  985. finish

  986. four things

  987. about the

  988. gospel

  989. number one

  990. the gospel

  991. which is

  992. the good news

  993. of the

  994. Lord Jesus

  995. is exclusive

  996. exclusive means

  997. isn't it

  998. the hello

  999. magazine

  1000. the okay

  1001. magazine

  1002. are they

  1003. still about

  1004. no

  1005. it would say

  1006. exclusive

  1007. it means

  1008. you can only

  1009. read it

  1010. there

  1011. you can't

  1012. find it

  1013. anyone else

  1014. you can only

  1015. read it

  1016. there

  1017. there's an

  1018. exclusive

  1019. offer

  1020. that means

  1021. the offer

  1022. isn't available

  1023. everywhere else

  1024. here's the

  1025. offer

  1026. it's

  1027. an exclusive

  1028. the gospel

  1029. is exclusive

  1030. that means

  1031. we can't

  1032. do anything

  1033. to earn

  1034. our way

  1035. to God

  1036. and so

  1037. the famous

  1038. question

  1039. is that

  1040. God

  1041. asks

  1042. why

  1043. should

  1044. I

  1045. let

  1046. you

  1047. into

  1048. heaven

  1049. and if

  1050. your answer

  1051. is well

  1052. I've

  1053. lived a

  1054. good

  1055. life

  1056. I've

  1057. tried

  1058. my

  1059. best

  1060. I've

  1061. treated

  1062. other

  1063. people

  1064. well

  1065. I'm

  1066. a

  1067. church

  1068. goer

  1069. it

  1070. shows

  1071. that you

  1072. are

  1073. basing

  1074. your

  1075. salvation

  1076. on your

  1077. own

  1078. good

  1079. works

  1080. there is

  1081. something

  1082. in each

  1083. of us

  1084. isn't

  1085. there

  1086. that

  1087. wants

  1088. to

  1089. earn

  1090. our

  1091. way

  1092. to

  1093. God

  1094. but

  1095. Jesus

  1096. Christ

  1097. has

  1098. done

  1099. it

  1100. all

  1101. it

  1102. is our

  1103. issue

  1104. isn't it

  1105. with Roman

  1106. Catholicism

  1107. that we

  1108. want to

  1109. say that

  1110. the Bible

  1111. teaches

  1112. it is

  1113. faith

  1114. in

  1115. Jesus

  1116. Christ

  1117. alone

  1118. by grace

  1119. alone

  1120. that

  1121. is what

  1122. saves

  1123. you

  1124. it

  1125. is

  1126. not

  1127. going

  1128. to

  1129. mass

  1130. it

  1131. is

  1132. not

  1133. going

  1134. to

  1135. confession

  1136. it

  1137. is

  1138. not

  1139. doing

  1140. penance

  1141. there

  1142. are many

  1143. things that we

  1144. stand with

  1145. Roman Catholics

  1146. on but on

  1147. this central

  1148. issue

  1149. isn't it

  1150. they've

  1151. misunderstood

  1152. the gospel

  1153. tragically

  1154. awfully

  1155. horrifically

  1156. !

  1157. the gospel

  1158. is exclusive

  1159. there is no

  1160. partnership

  1161. between you

  1162. and God

  1163. it is not

  1164. faith in

  1165. Jesus

  1166. Christ

  1167. plus

  1168. your good

  1169. works

  1170. it is

  1171. faith in

  1172. Jesus

  1173. Christ

  1174. alone

  1175. it's

  1176. incredibly

  1177. humbling

  1178. isn't it?

  1179. there is no

  1180. partnership

  1181. that is

  1182. initiated

  1183. by Jesus

  1184. it is

  1185. fulfilled

  1186. by him

  1187. and it's

  1188. offered to

  1189. you

  1190. and it's

  1191. offered to

  1192. me

  1193. and salvation

  1194. is found

  1195. nowhere else

  1196. other than

  1197. in Jesus

  1198. Christ

  1199. alone

  1200. and all

  1201. we do

  1202. is respond

  1203. we come

  1204. with open

  1205. hands

  1206. we come

  1207. saying

  1208. nothing

  1209. in my

  1210. hands

  1211. I

  1212. bring

  1213. simply

  1214. to

  1215. your

  1216. cross

  1217. I

  1218. cling

  1219. the gospel

  1220. is

  1221. exclusive

  1222. secondly

  1223. the gospel

  1224. is

  1225. inclusive

  1226. it's

  1227. exclusive

  1228. but it's

  1229. also

  1230. inclusive

  1231. isn't that

  1232. the wonder

  1233. of Acts

  1234. 15

  1235. it's for

  1236. all

  1237. people

  1238. it is

  1239. for Jew

  1240. and for

  1241. Gentile

  1242. it is

  1243. for Iranian

  1244. and Iraqi

  1245. it is

  1246. for

  1247. the Brits

  1248. and the

  1249. Europeans

  1250. it is

  1251. for all

  1252. cultures

  1253. all peoples

  1254. all ages

  1255. it is

  1256. for vegans

  1257. it is

  1258. for vegetarians

  1259. all sorts

  1260. of weirdos

  1261. the gospel

  1262. is open

  1263. the gospel

  1264. is inclusive

  1265. you might

  1266. feel very

  1267. very inadequate

  1268. you might

  1269. feel

  1270. you're from

  1271. the wrong

  1272. side of the

  1273. tracks

  1274. you've got

  1275. nothing going

  1276. the gospel

  1277. of the Lord

  1278. Jesus Christ

  1279. is for

  1280. you

  1281. it is

  1282. exclusive

  1283. it is

  1284. inclusive

  1285. number three

  1286. the gospel

  1287. is dividing

  1288. because it's

  1289. exclusive

  1290. which means

  1291. there is only

  1292. one way

  1293. to God

  1294. and there

  1295. is only

  1296. one mediator

  1297. between

  1298. God

  1299. and man

  1300. it is

  1301. good news

  1302. that people

  1303. have to

  1304. respond to

  1305. it is not

  1306. fake news

  1307. that you can

  1308. discard

  1309. it is not

  1310. irrelevant news

  1311. it is not

  1312. random news

  1313. some refute

  1314. it

  1315. some reject

  1316. it

  1317. some ignore

  1318. it

  1319. but wonderfully

  1320. some believe

  1321. it

  1322. and the

  1323. dividing line

  1324. is those

  1325. who put

  1326. their trust

  1327. in the Lord

  1328. Jesus Christ

  1329. alone

  1330. and those

  1331. who don't

  1332. and the

  1333. implications

  1334. for what you

  1335. do with this

  1336. news could

  1337. not be

  1338. greater

  1339. the gospel

  1340. alone is

  1341. the dividing

  1342. line

  1343. and the

  1344. way that

  1345. we respond

  1346. to this

  1347. gospel

  1348. message

  1349. is what

  1350. determines

  1351. whether we're

  1352. in God's

  1353. family or

  1354. not

  1355. that if

  1356. we will

  1357. believe in

  1358. him

  1359. we are

  1360. in

  1361. and if

  1362. we will

  1363. not believe

  1364. in him

  1365. we are

  1366. out

  1367. the gospel

  1368. is exclusive

  1369. the gospel

  1370. is inclusive

  1371. the gospel

  1372. is dividing

  1373. and lastly

  1374. the gospel

  1375. is unifying

  1376. that if you

  1377. are a follower

  1378. of the Lord

  1379. Jesus

  1380. you share

  1381. a bond

  1382. of unity

  1383. with another

  1384. follower of

  1385. the Lord

  1386. Jesus

  1387. in a way

  1388. that cannot

  1389. compare to

  1390. anything else

  1391. you may like

  1392. the same

  1393. sports team

  1394. you may like

  1395. the same

  1396. interest

  1397. you might be

  1398. from the same

  1399. part of town

  1400. you might

  1401. have the same

  1402. occupation

  1403. as someone

  1404. but if you

  1405. fly to

  1406. Turkmenistan

  1407. and you

  1408. meet with

  1409. a follower

  1410. of the Lord

  1411. Jesus

  1412. who you've

  1413. never met

  1414. before

  1415. you have a

  1416. deeper bond

  1417. with that

  1418. believer

  1419. because your

  1420. identity

  1421. is in

  1422. Christ

  1423. and he is

  1424. the source

  1425. of our

  1426. salvation

  1427. and your

  1428. hope in life

  1429. and in death

  1430. is shared

  1431. with that

  1432. brother or

  1433. sister

  1434. our identity

  1435. in Christ

  1436. together gives

  1437. us a deeper

  1438. unity than

  1439. anything else

  1440. that can be

  1441. found in the

  1442. world

  1443. and we see the

  1444. Jerusalem council

  1445. speaking in that

  1446. way don't we

  1447. verse 23

  1448. we see them

  1449. address people

  1450. who are

  1451. strangers

  1452. in Antioch

  1453. as brothers

  1454. and because

  1455. the gospel

  1456. is unifying

  1457. we are brought

  1458. into the

  1459. family

  1460. we're given

  1461. a common

  1462. mission

  1463. we're brought

  1464. into the

  1465. family

  1466. and we're

  1467. given

  1468. this task

  1469. of bearing

  1470. with one

  1471. another

  1472. of making

  1473. sacrifices

  1474. for one

  1475. another

  1476. of giving

  1477. up our

  1478. preferences

  1479. for one

  1480. another

  1481. to use

  1482. our freedom

  1483. wisely

  1484. for the

  1485. good of

  1486. our

  1487. brothers

  1488. and sisters

  1489. and so

  1490. this entire

  1491. gospel movement

  1492. hinges

  1493. doesn't it

  1494. on this

  1495. one belief

  1496. of how

  1497. one is

  1498. saved

  1499. of how

  1500. one enters

  1501. into the

  1502. kingdom of

  1503. God

  1504. how one

  1505. enters

  1506. into the

  1507. family

  1508. and Acts

  1509. 15 teaches

  1510. us that it

  1511. is by faith

  1512. alone

  1513. in Christ

  1514. alone

  1515. by grace

  1516. alone

  1517. there's one

  1518. requirement

  1519. this morning

  1520. there is

  1521. one thing

  1522. there is

  1523. one way

  1524. to God

  1525. to have

  1526. faith

  1527. alone

  1528. in Jesus

  1529. Christ

  1530. alone

  1531. by his

  1532. grace

  1533. alone

  1534. let's

  1535. pray
