  1. And turn, if you will, to Acts chapter 17. I get up early on a Sunday morning and do the children's sheets.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  2. ! Thankfully what rarely happens, happened this morning, that you begin to look at your sermon and your sermon kind of falls apart before your very eyes.

  3. And so this is half of what you should be getting, but otherwise you'd be here until about one o'clock.

  4. And so I don't know whether we'll get to the other half, but we'll see.

  5. And because of that I've done an outline, which I don't normally do, but you'll be able to follow the outline.

  6. And many people consider Christianity to be a primitive idea.

  7. Churches like ours are often pigeonholed as those Christians who are intolerant, closed-minded.

  8. And we're told, aren't we, sometimes that we have unevolved views of human sexuality.

  9. And back in AD 50, the Apostle Paul's missionary journey that we've been tracing led him to a Greco-Roman city that was the ancient equivalent, really, of a city like London.

  10. And that city was called Athens in Greece.

  11. Athens has been the foremost city in the world since the 5th century BC.

  12. And even after the Roman Empire swept through it, Athens is granted kind of special status in the Roman Empire.

  13. Athens is a free city.

  14. It boasted a rich philosophical tradition.

  15. Wonderful literature.

  16. Wonderful art.

  17. Notable achievements in human freedom.

  18. F.F. Bruce has summarised the intellectual significance of Athens saying this.

  19. The sculpture, the literature, the oratory of Athens in the 4th and 5th century remain and surpassed.

  20. In Philosophy 2, she took the leading place.

  21. Athens is the native city of Socrates and Plato.

  22. And it was still, in Paul's age, a leading centre of learning.

  23. We describe it as a great university city.

  24. Just before we walk through Paul's time in Athens, we see in the first half of the chapter, in verses 1 to 9, he's been in Thessalonica.

  25. His mission team have gone to this city of Thessalonica.

  26. They've seen great fruit as they preach among the Jews and God-fearing Greeks.

  27. But that fruitfulness, people responding to the good news, is met with jealousy by other Jews.

  28. They eventually end up driving him out of town.

  29. And so there's fruitfulness and opposition.

  30. Those same two things that go hand in hand.

  31. His team have driven out.

  32. Verses 10 to 15, they spend their time in Berea.

  33. And they meet there, people who are eager to search the Bible.

  34. They want to see, is what Paul's saying true?

  35. But then Jews come from Thessalonica and they stir up trouble once again.

  36. So Paul's got to move on.

  37. We read in verse 15, they escort him to the coast of Athens.

  38. But Silas and Timothy stay in Berea.

  39. As he waits in Athens, Paul decides to go for a walk around the city.

  40. He's heard of Athens.

  41. Everyone's heard of Athens.

  42. And now Paul has got the chance to encounter this great city for himself.

  43. How did he respond?

  44. That's the question I want us to ask.

  45. How did Paul respond to this great city of learning?

  46. And seeing how he responds, we've got to ask ourselves, how do we respond to our great city?

  47. The first thing we see is in verse 16.

  48. Can you see, Paul is distressed.

  49. That's the key word there.

  50. Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked.

  51. And distressed within him.

  52. As he saw that the city was full of culture, literature, art.

  53. Now what does Paul see?

  54. He sees full of idols.

  55. And there's so much that Paul could have seen, isn't it?

  56. So much beauty in the culture.

  57. He could have visited stunning buildings like the Parthion,

  58. the Agorah, the cultural centre, the marketplace, the gathering place of ideas.

  59. Where great works of art was painted.

  60. There was in little porches gatherings of people discussing philosophy.

  61. Teachers gathered their group of disciples to teach and exchange the latest ideas.

  62. It would have been of great interest to an intellect like Paul.

  63. He could have visited the various schools of philosophy.

  64. He could have stopped off at the galleries, admired the art, looked at the buildings, loved the literature.

  65. But they're not the primary things that struck the Apostle Paul.

  66. As he walked around the city, more than anything else, he was struck by the idolatry.

  67. And he saw it everywhere.

  68. The city was buried under idols.

  69. Roman satirists of the time quipped,

  70. It's easier to find a god than a man in Athens.

  71. The Greeks had gods for absolutely everything.

  72. Go home, Google Greek gods and see the list that comes up.

  73. And Paul, as he walked around Athens, saw these little shrines, little temples, little monuments,

  74. built to honour and attribute glory.

  75. Imagine, a monotheistic Jew,

  76. believing in one god who made the heavens and the earth,

  77. who's now at an encounter with Jesus Christ.

  78. And he's come to realise that this god, the Lord of heaven and earth,

  79. exists in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  80. And this god has sent Jesus into the world

  81. to provide a way that you and I can worship him.

  82. And to enjoy him.

  83. And no one in Athens seems to know about it,

  84. or care about it.

  85. And Paul is majorly distressed by it.

  86. There's this compound going on in Paul's heart.

  87. He's got a passion for the name of the one true God,

  88. and he's got a burden for the blindness of these people.

  89. And as that combination works,

  90. there's passion for the glory of God in the person of the Lord Jesus,

  91. and this profound sadness about the people of Athens.

  92. It causes him to be deeply moved.

  93. And there's a great challenge, isn't there?

  94. Paul's faith shaped how he viewed this world.

  95. Paul's faith shaped how he viewed this city.

  96. He would have seen the beautiful buildings,

  97. the art, the literature.

  98. But the problem was that the people of Athens

  99. were using all those God-given gifts

  100. to give glory to idols.

  101. They were using their God-given gifts

  102. to serve everything

  103. apart from the one who gave them those gifts.

  104. All that intellectual ability.

  105. All those giftings given to them by God,

  106. but they refused to give that God glory.

  107. Does that remind you of anywhere?

  108. How do you see the city that we live in?

  109. What do you see through the architecture?

  110. And through the intellect?

  111. And through all the culture that's here?

  112. Through everything that's so impressive

  113. and sometimes so intimidating in London?

  114. There are idols everywhere in London.

  115. When we define an idol as anything

  116. which takes the place of God,

  117. an idol is anything

  118. which takes the central place

  119. in every human's life

  120. that only God should have,

  121. we suddenly see there are idols everywhere.

  122. When we define an idol

  123. as anything that takes up God's place,

  124. we see, don't we,

  125. that there are many people in London.

  126. There are many people on our streets

  127. who we work with in our schools

  128. and God is not at the center

  129. of their affections and their love.

  130. In fact, there are many, many things

  131. at the center of their affections.

  132. And as I've cycled around Ealing this week,

  133. the question I've been asked

  134. as I've studied Act 17 is this,

  135. is there any part of me

  136. that's distressed about it?

  137. And my own answer is this,

  138. nowhere nearly enough.

  139. That actually I've become accustomed

  140. and I sit way too easily

  141. with all the idolatry

  142. that's all around me.

  143. And that shouldn't be the case,

  144. should it?

  145. That I should be more burdened

  146. for this borough,

  147. for this city.

  148. And so one of the applications

  149. of Act 17 is this,

  150. we must pray,

  151. Lord, give me eyes

  152. to see this city

  153. as you see this city.

  154. And give me a burden

  155. for the idolatry

  156. that is all around me.

  157. So how does Paul respond

  158. to the impressive city of Athens?

  159. First, he's distressed,

  160. but the second key word

  161. is it moves him,

  162. that distress,

  163. to action.

  164. And so we go to

  165. verses 17 to 21.

  166. Because of this distress,

  167. he goes to the local synagogue

  168. and he reasons with the Jews

  169. and the God-fearing Greeks.

  170. But as well as that,

  171. he goes not only to the synagogue,

  172. but he goes to the marketplace.

  173. And day by day,

  174. distressed and motivated

  175. to action,

  176. he goes out

  177. and he speaks

  178. a simple message

  179. that is summarised

  180. for us in verse 18.

  181. Can you see it?

  182. It's a beautiful summary.

  183. He preaches the good news

  184. about Jesus,

  185. and the resurrection.

  186. Isn't that a lovely summary?

  187. We keep getting them,

  188. don't we,

  189. in the book of Acts.

  190. The good news

  191. about Jesus

  192. and the resurrection.

  193. You cannot speak

  194. of the resurrection of Jesus

  195. unless you speak

  196. of the death of Jesus,

  197. can you?

  198. And the coming of Jesus.

  199. He speaks of all it accomplished

  200. and all it meant

  201. and we're told

  202. that he's doing this

  203. to a group of Epicurean

  204. and Stoic philosophers.

  205. They begin to debate

  206. with him

  207. with mixed reactions.

  208. They're the two great

  209. schools of thought

  210. of the day,

  211. each with their own answers

  212. to the big questions

  213. of life.

  214. The Epicureans

  215. believed in gods,

  216. but those gods

  217. are so remote

  218. that they would take

  219. no interest in you.

  220. And those gods

  221. had no influence

  222. on human affairs.

  223. The world was

  224. random chance,

  225. no survival

  226. of death

  227. or judgment.

  228. So even though

  229. they believed in God,

  230. their God was so remote

  231. you could just

  232. get on and enjoy your life.

  233. Do you remember

  234. on the buses

  235. years ago,

  236. isn't it?

  237. There is probably

  238. no God

  239. so just enjoy your life

  240. the atheists put up.

  241. In many ways

  242. it's Epicurean.

  243. They criticised

  244. Athens

  245. they mocked

  246. these little temples

  247. that were there

  248. and people seeking

  249. to bring the needs

  250. of gods

  251. by bringing food to them.

  252. And we'll see

  253. how Paul picks up

  254. on that in a little while.

  255. The Stoics,

  256. we still use that word

  257. today, don't we?

  258. They believed

  259. that the human race

  260. came from one origin

  261. and through

  262. kind of logic

  263. and discipline

  264. they believed

  265. you could live in harmony

  266. with this natural order.

  267. But the world

  268. was governed

  269. by an impersonal force.

  270. they believed

  271. that God

  272. was like the soul

  273. of the world

  274. he pervaded

  275. everything to some degree

  276. and in a fatalistic way

  277. they believed

  278. humanity's job

  279. was basically

  280. to suck it up.

  281. To roll with the punches

  282. To be stoical

  283. in how

  284. the slings

  285. and arrows

  286. of outrageous fortune

  287. affected you.

  288. It led to this kind of

  289. prized attribute

  290. of being self-sufficient.

  291. You're self-sufficient

  292. as fate plays its way

  293. out in your life

  294. so you get the stoic

  295. mentality of today.

  296. I can do it myself.

  297. And Paul gets

  298. into debate with them

  299. about the good news

  300. of Jesus

  301. and the resurrection.

  302. They invite him

  303. to the Areopagus

  304. a kind of official

  305. city council

  306. that meets

  307. a court

  308. that sought

  309. the welfare

  310. of the city

  311. and in verse 20

  312. they say

  313. you're bringing

  314. some strange ideas

  315. to our ears

  316. and we would like

  317. to know

  318. what they mean.

  319. Verse 21

  320. tells us

  321. that the people

  322. of Athens

  323. they love

  324. this kind of thing

  325. they love new ideas

  326. they love

  327. sitting around

  328. listening to

  329. the latest fad

  330. or philosophical

  331. proposition.

  332. So they hear Paul

  333. and they say

  334. we want to hear

  335. more of this.

  336. They bring him

  337. to the council meeting

  338. it's an amazing

  339. opportunity

  340. for a guy

  341. who's just

  342. walking around

  343. the city

  344. originally

  345. as he waited

  346. for his friends

  347. to arrive.

  348. Paul distressed

  349. by what he saw

  350. was motivated

  351. to simply share

  352. the good news

  353. of Jesus

  354. and his resurrection

  355. and look at the door

  356. that's opened

  357. before him.

  358. And so even though

  359. the people of this city

  360. they scorn

  361. and they ridicule us

  362. for holding to the Bible

  363. as God's word

  364. even though some

  365. may misrepresent us

  366. we are called

  367. simply to share

  368. that message

  369. the good news

  370. of Jesus

  371. and the resurrection

  372. with anyone

  373. who will listen.

  374. What will be the results

  375. but we don't know

  376. what the results will be

  377. we leave the results

  378. to God

  379. don't we?

  380. But our job

  381. as a church

  382. is to simply

  383. and clearly

  384. tell the good news

  385. of Jesus

  386. and the resurrection.

  387. And Paul has now

  388. this amazing opportunity

  389. to deliver a sermon

  390. before some of the most

  391. influential people

  392. in Athens

  393. and so I want to move

  394. us to see

  395. what does he do

  396. with this speech?

  397. He is distressed

  398. by Athens

  399. he is moved

  400. to action

  401. but thirdly

  402. he is wise

  403. in how he speaks.

  404. He's wise

  405. in how he speaks.

  406. Let's look at his context

  407. and let's look

  408. at his content

  409. and then we'll look

  410. at the response

  411. really briefly.

  412. Paul is really aware

  413. as he stands

  414. in this council

  415. in Athens

  416. of who he's speaking to.

  417. When Paul is in

  418. a Jewish synagogue

  419. he argues

  420. from the Old Testament

  421. and they knew

  422. he would have read

  423. passages like

  424. Isaiah 53

  425. and unpacked them.

  426. That he was led

  427. like a lamb

  428. to the slaughter

  429. like a sheep

  430. before his shearers

  431. is silent

  432. so he did not

  433. open his mouth

  434. he was marred

  435. beyond all human likeness

  436. and he would have

  437. done that with

  438. the Jewish people

  439. because the Jewish

  440. people knew

  441. their scriptures.

  442. He would start

  443. with the Bible

  444. and he would

  445. unpack it to them

  446. but here in Athens

  447. he's dealing

  448. with people

  449. who don't know

  450. their Bibles.

  451. They don't know

  452. the Old Testament

  453. scriptures.

  454. They wouldn't know

  455. Isaiah 53

  456. and so he starts

  457. verse 22

  458. can you look with me?

  459. Men of Athens

  460. I perceive in every way

  461. that you are very religious

  462. for as I passed along

  463. and observed the objects

  464. of your worship

  465. I found also an altar

  466. with inscription

  467. to the unknown God

  468. what therefore you worship

  469. as unknown

  470. I proclaim to you.

  471. Paul is in one of those

  472. souvenir knick-knack shops

  473. you know like there are

  474. in central London

  475. in Athens

  476. he goes in

  477. there's little statues

  478. there's little kind of

  479. snow globes

  480. like there are

  481. and as he walks around

  482. he finds this little souvenir

  483. these little idols

  484. that are for sale

  485. and he picks it up

  486. and he sees there's

  487. an inscription on the bottom

  488. that says

  489. to the unknown God

  490. these Greeks

  491. in Athens

  492. so fearful

  493. of the gods

  494. there are so many gods

  495. they're paying homage to

  496. there might be one

  497. that they've missed out

  498. there might be one

  499. that they don't know about

  500. they haven't heard of

  501. and just in case

  502. they get on the wrong side

  503. of this god

  504. they've missed out

  505. through ignorance

  506. they've offered

  507. an altar

  508. saying

  509. this is to the unknown God

  510. just to cover their bases

  511. and Paul sees this

  512. and he starts to engage

  513. with it

  514. these people

  515. FF Bruce again says this

  516. this shows the value

  517. of finding a point of contact

  518. with your hearers

  519. insights from the world

  520. around us

  521. from general revelation

  522. Paul meets these people

  523. with language

  524. that is familiar to them

  525. he turns to their own poets

  526. for their own idolatry

  527. and he uses it

  528. so he can engage

  529. in a way that is relevant

  530. and appropriate

  531. with the good news

  532. of Jesus

  533. and the resurrection

  534. and so we must think

  535. we must think carefully

  536. about our context

  537. about our friends

  538. about our neighbours

  539. about our colleagues

  540. and something that's

  541. really helpful

  542. is to look for

  543. gospel

  544. analogies

  545. in our culture

  546. yesterday morning

  547. I went to Park Run

  548. it was

  549. it was a pretty depressing

  550. morning on that front

  551. but why do people

  552. who go to Park Run

  553. love Park Run

  554. why do people

  555. who go to Park Run

  556. talk about it

  557. in a boring way

  558. what is it

  559. that they're looking for

  560. what is it

  561. about this culture

  562. that there is

  563. of a group of people

  564. who religiously go

  565. the same time

  566. every week

  567. who are desperate

  568. for community

  569. who share this joy

  570. with one another

  571. what are they looking for

  572. what is behind that

  573. in the films

  574. that you watch

  575. what is the story

  576. that is behind

  577. the films

  578. what are

  579. what is the why

  580. behind the TV programme

  581. that you and your

  582. colleagues talk about

  583. yesterday morning

  584. I was

  585. I had to do some work

  586. on the kind of

  587. hedge at the front

  588. of our house

  589. and my neighbour

  590. came across the road

  591. he'd been in Japan

  592. he was kind of

  593. mocking my work

  594. in the garden

  595. and he said

  596. Japan is

  597. you know the amazing

  598. thing about Japan

  599. he says there's temples

  600. everywhere

  601. I couldn't believe it

  602. I absolutely fluffed

  603. the message

  604. I said why do you think

  605. what's behind that

  606. he said I don't know

  607. I said well people

  608. I thought I'd be

  609. Paul in Athens

  610. but what's the why

  611. behind that

  612. and we have to work

  613. hard at that

  614. don't we

  615. with our friends

  616. in our culture

  617. with the people

  618. what is the why

  619. behind what are they doing

  620. why do you do that

  621. we're so reluctant

  622. to ask that

  623. there are illustrations

  624. everywhere aren't there

  625. in our city

  626. in what we watch

  627. in what we read

  628. in the architecture

  629. and Paul says

  630. think carefully

  631. about it

  632. how can we engage

  633. where our friends

  634. and family are at

  635. notice not only

  636. the context

  637. but the content

  638. of the sermon

  639. there's five things

  640. number one

  641. he tells them

  642. God is your

  643. creator

  644. verse 24

  645. the God who made

  646. the world

  647. and everything in it

  648. being Lord of heaven

  649. and earth

  650. does not live

  651. in temples

  652. made by man

  653. nor is he served

  654. by human hands

  655. to which the Epicureans

  656. would be saying

  657. our man

  658. the Epicureans

  659. they would say

  660. God doesn't live

  661. in a little temple

  662. he's far off

  663. he would say

  664. this God

  665. is not interested

  666. in interacting

  667. with humans

  668. this one God

  669. who created everything

  670. but the idea

  671. that God

  672. didn't dwell

  673. in temples

  674. made by human hands

  675. would have led

  676. this group of Epicureans

  677. to prick up their ears

  678. it's so encouraging

  679. to you and I

  680. Herman Bavinck

  681. says this

  682. there is nothing

  683. in this universe

  684. that is atheistic

  685. that is a brilliant line

  686. there is nothing

  687. in this universe

  688. that is atheistic

  689. you get that

  690. if you get that

  691. that transforms

  692. how you speak

  693. to others

  694. God is your

  695. created

  696. and you cannot

  697. move

  698. you cannot move

  699. without being

  700. suffocated

  701. by the revelation

  702. of God

  703. you can deny it

  704. but that doesn't

  705. deny the reality

  706. of it

  707. the people

  708. who we live

  709. amongst

  710. the people

  711. who we work

  712. amongst

  713. they are surrounded

  714. by God's revelation

  715. it is inescapable

  716. I think this is so

  717. encouraging

  718. because it

  719. it is saying

  720. that we know

  721. something

  722. about the

  723. unbeliever

  724. that the

  725. unbeliever

  726. spends all

  727. his time

  728. denying

  729. upon himself

  730. God

  731. is a creator

  732. Paul doesn't

  733. just establish

  734. that God

  735. is the creator

  736. he presents him

  737. as the sustainer

  738. of all life

  739. look at verse 25

  740. he's not served

  741. by human hands

  742. as though he

  743. needed anything

  744. since he himself

  745. gives to all mankind

  746. life and breath

  747. and everything

  748. Paul starts by saying

  749. the God I'm speaking

  750. about is the Lord

  751. of heaven and earth

  752. the one who made

  753. the world

  754. and everything in it

  755. and he is the one

  756. that gives you life

  757. and breath

  758. and he upholds

  759. this whole world

  760. in him you live

  761. and move

  762. and have our being

  763. as one of your own

  764. poets have said

  765. thirdly he says

  766. and God has got a purpose

  767. for creation

  768. verse 26

  769. from one man

  770. and every nation

  771. of mankind

  772. to live on all

  773. the face of the earth

  774. having determined

  775. allotted periods

  776. and the boundaries

  777. of their dwelling places

  778. that's an amazing verse

  779. isn't it

  780. the reason you are here

  781. this morning

  782. is why

  783. because God

  784. has allotted periods

  785. and the boundaries

  786. of your dwelling place

  787. the people that you live with

  788. the people that you live amongst

  789. he's put them where they are

  790. wide

  791. so that they should seek God

  792. and perhaps feel their way

  793. toward him

  794. and find him

  795. yet he's not far

  796. from each one of us

  797. for in him we live

  798. and move

  799. and have our being

  800. even as some of your own

  801. poets have said

  802. it's a stoic poet

  803. that he's quoting

  804. we are his offspring

  805. and so the epicureans

  806. they would have had

  807. their ears perked up

  808. before

  809. but suddenly the stoics

  810. are interested

  811. can you notice with me

  812. the point

  813. that the apostle

  814. is making

  815. he is saying

  816. that God

  817. the creator

  818. and sustainer

  819. his purpose

  820. is to bring

  821. his created people

  822. into some sort

  823. of right relationship

  824. with him

  825. he set up our lives

  826. in such a way

  827. that this life

  828. will cause us

  829. to be reaching out

  830. to something

  831. beyond ourselves

  832. look at how

  833. this is worded

  834. God did this

  835. so that they would

  836. seek him

  837. and perhaps

  838. reach out for him

  839. and find him

  840. to find God

  841. the language

  842. is boiled down

  843. isn't it

  844. to some extent

  845. but just that thought

  846. that our God

  847. is creating

  848. and sustaining

  849. and ordaining

  850. all things

  851. that people might

  852. reach out for him

  853. and find him

  854. that is extraordinarily

  855. encouraging

  856. in the things

  857. that your friends

  858. and your family

  859. and your neighbours

  860. devote themselves

  861. to

  862. what are they doing

  863. look behind

  864. the why

  865. what are they doing

  866. they are

  867. seeking

  868. Ecclesiastes tells us

  869. that God

  870. has set

  871. eternity

  872. on the hearts

  873. of every human being

  874. there's a homing

  875. device

  876. there's a calling

  877. device

  878. to God

  879. Paul then moves on

  880. from this purpose

  881. and creation

  882. to humanity

  883. that humanity

  884. has got a problem

  885. verse 28 and 29

  886. what we've done

  887. is domesticated

  888. God

  889. hasn't it

  890. we've sought

  891. we've not sought

  892. to take our lead

  893. from God

  894. but we've shaped

  895. and fashioned

  896. this God

  897. into something

  898. less than he is

  899. we've tried

  900. to make God

  901. in our image

  902. we've shaped

  903. and we've fashioned

  904. little idols

  905. that are such

  906. a poor echo

  907. of what deep

  908. down

  909. we know better

  910. than

  911. that we've not

  912. related rightly

  913. to this God

  914. and God is calling

  915. all humanity

  916. to repent

  917. the God

  918. who made

  919. everyone

  920. the God

  921. who is upholding

  922. everyone's life

  923. who is worthy

  924. of worship

  925. of everyone

  926. and yet

  927. everyone is not

  928. worshipping him

  929. and those who are

  930. not worshipping him

  931. and relating to him

  932. rightly

  933. that God

  934. is calling them

  935. to repentance

  936. to repent of that

  937. to turn away

  938. from that

  939. to take the idols

  940. down

  941. for Paul says

  942. God has fixed

  943. a day

  944. to judge

  945. the world

  946. with justice

  947. and that's

  948. Paul's gentle

  949. and yet

  950. faithful way

  951. of introducing

  952. the problem

  953. of sin

  954. and then the fifth

  955. point

  956. of the content

  957. of this sermon

  958. is the solution

  959. to humanity's

  960. problem

  961. the man

  962. that God

  963. has appointed

  964. and around

  965. whom judgment

  966. will revolve

  967. the one

  968. who is

  969. authenticated

  970. by God

  971. by means

  972. of his resurrection

  973. from the dead

  974. and Paul probably

  975. said a lot more

  976. here didn't he

  977. think about it

  978. we can read this

  979. sermon in a minute

  980. or two

  981. but he probably

  982. said a lot more

  983. and what Luke

  984. has done

  985. is he summarised

  986. this account

  987. he summarised

  988. this account

  989. to the point

  990. where a reaction

  991. is provoked

  992. and so we know

  993. that if he's been

  994. speaking of resurrection

  995. he's obviously

  996. been speaking

  997. about the death

  998. of Christ too

  999. but what Luke

  1000. does is he shows

  1001. us the reaction

  1002. that comes

  1003. and when Paul

  1004. comes to

  1005. the work

  1006. of Jesus

  1007. Christ

  1008. there's a great

  1009. reaction

  1010. that's often

  1011. the case

  1012. isn't it

  1013. I find

  1014. when I speak

  1015. with people

  1016. who aren't

  1017. Christians

  1018. they're very

  1019. very happy

  1020. for me to

  1021. talk about

  1022. church

  1023. I think

  1024. it's a bit

  1025. quirky

  1026. but they

  1027. quite like

  1028. it

  1029. they're

  1030. willing

  1031. for me

  1032. to talk

  1033. about

  1034. God

  1035. but until

  1036. we stand

  1037. fast on

  1038. the uniqueness

  1039. and the work

  1040. of Jesus

  1041. Christ

  1042. that's where

  1043. the reaction

  1044. comes

  1045. isn't it

  1046. and so Paul

  1047. has an awareness

  1048. of his context

  1049. and he covers

  1050. the main points

  1051. of the gospel

  1052. in his content

  1053. and then in verses

  1054. 32 to 34

  1055. as we wrap up

  1056. he gives us

  1057. the response

  1058. what should we

  1059. expect

  1060. verse 32

  1061. some sneered

  1062. and they mocked

  1063. Paul

  1064. saying

  1065. what a load

  1066. of rubbish

  1067. people who

  1068. think we're

  1069. crazy

  1070. others show

  1071. an interest

  1072. we read in

  1073. verse 32

  1074. we want to

  1075. hear you again

  1076. on this subject

  1077. nearly always

  1078. people who

  1079. become Christians

  1080. it is a

  1081. slow process

  1082. it is

  1083. very unusual

  1084. in my experience

  1085. that people

  1086. become Christians

  1087. suddenly

  1088. some sneer

  1089. some mock

  1090. some are

  1091. interested

  1092. but in verse

  1093. 34

  1094. can you see

  1095. it wonderfully

  1096. some believe

  1097. against all

  1098. the odds

  1099. they believe

  1100. one of them

  1101. is actually

  1102. a member

  1103. of the

  1104. Areopagus

  1105. another is

  1106. this woman

  1107. Demaris

  1108. and so

  1109. all through

  1110. this initial

  1111. eyes open

  1112. walk through

  1113. the city

  1114. the distress

  1115. that Paul

  1116. feels

  1117. motivates him

  1118. into gospel

  1119. action

  1120. he goes

  1121. to the synagogue

  1122. and he tells

  1123. them about

  1124. Jesus

  1125. he goes

  1126. to the

  1127. marketplace

  1128. and he

  1129. tells them

  1130. about Jesus

  1131. and people

  1132. laugh

  1133. and some

  1134. are interested

  1135. but some

  1136. believe

  1137. how do we

  1138. make disciples

  1139. of the Lord

  1140. Jesus

  1141. in healing

  1142. we see

  1143. our culture

  1144. through God's

  1145. eyes

  1146. that it is

  1147. not honouring

  1148. God

  1149. the God

  1150. who has

  1151. made them

  1152. the God

  1153. who sustains

  1154. them

  1155. the God

  1156. who has

  1157. given such

  1158. gifts to

  1159. people

  1160. is not

  1161. receiving

  1162. the honour

  1163. that he

  1164. deserves

  1165. and we

  1166. ponder

  1167. that

  1168. and we

  1169. pray

  1170. about that

  1171. until it

  1172. moves us

  1173. to distress

  1174. and we

  1175. trust that

  1176. God still

  1177. works

  1178. powerfully

  1179. through this

  1180. message of

  1181. Jesus

  1182. and the

  1183. resurrection

  1184. because this

  1185. little message

  1186. is the power

  1187. of God

  1188. unto salvation

  1189. and God

  1190. still uses

  1191. that simple

  1192. gospel message

  1193. to change

  1194. lives

  1195. to transform

  1196. eternities

  1197. as we've seen

  1198. already this

  1199. morning

  1200. let's pray
