  1. Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  2. I'm not massively into surprises.

  3. ! I'm not most surprises anyway.

  4. !

  5. You know those texts that you get?

  6. Can we get together for a chat sometime?

  7. How do you feel when you get them?

  8. Let me tell you as your minister.

  9. Oh, they're leaving.

  10. Or they're unhappy or something like that.

  11. I'm someone who knows.

  12. Who likes to know what to expect.

  13. I think surprises are overrated.

  14. One of the reasons I love the Bible

  15. is because the Bible is very interested

  16. in letting you and I know what to expect.

  17. And both now and in the future.

  18. I love that the Bible tells us

  19. what God is aiming to do

  20. in my life every day by His Spirit.

  21. I love that the Bible tells me

  22. what is it going to be like

  23. to persevere with Jesus Christ

  24. for the years ahead.

  25. I love that the Bible tells me

  26. what it's going to cost me

  27. and what it will reward me.

  28. I love that the Bible tells me

  29. some of the things that will happen

  30. when I die.

  31. It tells you what it will be like

  32. to be with Jesus in His heavenly kingdom.

  33. And reading the Bible

  34. eliminates lots of surprises.

  35. And that's one of the reasons

  36. that I want you to love Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  37. Because it shows you and I

  38. what we should expect.

  39. The shape of our expectations

  40. in the area of telling people

  41. about the Lord Jesus

  42. of gospel ministry.

  43. That is, God wants you and I

  44. to know what it's going to be like

  45. when we share the good news

  46. of the Lord Jesus with others.

  47. And one of the things God

  48. uses the book of Acts in

  49. is that He shows what happened

  50. to the first Christians,

  51. those first century Christians.

  52. He shows us the pattern,

  53. the emerging pattern

  54. of what life should be like

  55. so that we will have

  56. our expectations shaped.

  57. And what we see in Acts

  58. is affirmed by the rest

  59. of the New Testament

  60. that we can expect

  61. certain things to happen

  62. as they happened back then.

  63. And so I want to look at Acts 18

  64. because we see the shape

  65. of gospel ministry

  66. as clearly there

  67. as anywhere.

  68. That's it.

  69. Go for it.

  70. And there's four key elements.

  71. All right?

  72. And the point is this.

  73. What happened 2,000 years ago

  74. will shape our expectations today.

  75. What will happen this week

  76. when you tell people

  77. about the Lord Jesus?

  78. If we were to talk

  79. about the Lord Jesus

  80. with our nearest and dearest

  81. and our friends and neighbours,

  82. what will happen?

  83. Well, four things.

  84. All right?

  85. Firstly, let's pay attention

  86. to the nature

  87. of the apostolic work,

  88. of the work of the apostles.

  89. Paul is regarded as an apostle

  90. and some of his friends

  91. and colleagues in Acts 18,

  92. they're not apostles,

  93. technically,

  94. but they are helping Paul

  95. with his mission.

  96. And so let's pay attention

  97. to the apostolic work,

  98. the apostolic mission,

  99. this work of sharing Jesus.

  100. And one of the pictures

  101. that you find in Acts 18,

  102. I don't know whether you picked it up

  103. in the reading,

  104. is wonderful collaboration

  105. in the work of sharing Christ.

  106. You see,

  107. Paul's relationship

  108. with the husband and wife,

  109. Priscilla and Aquila,

  110. who he meets

  111. for the very first time

  112. in this chapter,

  113. but they become

  114. lifelong companions

  115. in gospel work.

  116. Then there's Apollos,

  117. who we meet

  118. for the very first time

  119. in this chapter,

  120. but he came to be regarded

  121. as a really important contributor

  122. to the work of the gospel.

  123. It's wonderful

  124. to read about

  125. that collaboration.

  126. Paul was not

  127. a one-man band.

  128. But what about

  129. the work that they do?

  130. What do they consider

  131. their responsibilities to be?

  132. Just follow with me

  133. for a moment if you can.

  134. And let me point to you all,

  135. point out all the main verbs

  136. used in this chapter.

  137. What is a verb?

  138. What is a verb?

  139. A doing word.

  140. That's right, isn't it?

  141. It's an action.

  142. Listen to the verbs.

  143. I want you to see

  144. the interesting thing.

  145. So verse 4,

  146. can you see it?

  147. Paul reasoned

  148. with the people

  149. in the synagogue

  150. as he tried to

  151. persuade them

  152. that the gospel is true.

  153. Verse 5,

  154. testifying

  155. that Jesus is the Messiah.

  156. Verse 11,

  157. Paul has spent

  158. a year and a half

  159. teaching

  160. God's word

  161. in Corinth.

  162. When Paul gets to Ephesus,

  163. verse 19,

  164. what does he do?

  165. He reasons

  166. with people in the synagogue,

  167. just like he had

  168. in Corinth,

  169. verse 4.

  170. Verse 23,

  171. we read about him

  172. travelling around

  173. strengthening disciples

  174. in various places,

  175. no doubt by the things

  176. that he said.

  177. And he taught.

  178. that are the verbs

  179. that describe

  180. Paul's ministry

  181. in this chapter.

  182. What about Apollos?

  183. Verse 25,

  184. we find him

  185. joining in on the act.

  186. It says he was

  187. speaking fervently,

  188. teaching

  189. about Jesus.

  190. Verse 26,

  191. he speaks

  192. boldly

  193. in the synagogue.

  194. When he gets to

  195. Achaia,

  196. in verse 28,

  197. he is vigorously

  198. refuting

  199. his opponents.

  200. Now,

  201. just one little

  202. side note.

  203. Look at verse 24.

  204. Apollos is described,

  205. isn't it,

  206. as someone who has

  207. a thorough knowledge

  208. of the Bible.

  209. Quite literally,

  210. Apollos was somebody

  211. strong

  212. in the Scriptures.

  213. I think that's an

  214. amazing thing

  215. to say about someone,

  216. isn't it?

  217. Imagine somebody

  218. described you,

  219. what are they like?

  220. They say,

  221. well, actually,

  222. they're really,

  223. they're strong

  224. in the Scriptures.

  225. I would hope

  226. all of us

  227. who are believers

  228. in the Lord Jesus,

  229. we would aspire

  230. to be like Apollos

  231. in this.

  232. If you're a young person,

  233. if you're somebody

  234. who's a teenager

  235. and people endlessly

  236. ask you,

  237. what do you want to do?

  238. What do you want to be?

  239. What are your plans

  240. for A-levels

  241. and then university?

  242. What do you think

  243. after university?

  244. What's your ambition

  245. for your life ahead?

  246. Let me give you

  247. an ambition

  248. which is more precious

  249. than many of the other things

  250. that people go on about.

  251. It would be

  252. of infinite value

  253. to you children

  254. and to you young people

  255. if you were able to say,

  256. what I want to be

  257. is strong in the Scriptures.

  258. What a great ambition.

  259. Now back to the apostolic work.

  260. We've talked about the verbs

  261. that Paul used

  262. to describe his own work.

  263. We've talked about Apollos

  264. but look at Priscilla

  265. and Aquila

  266. who we hear about

  267. in verse 26.

  268. They hear

  269. apostles teaching ministry

  270. and they discover

  271. that Apollos only knew

  272. about the baptism

  273. of John the Baptist.

  274. So they get him

  275. round for lunch,

  276. they get him

  277. together with him

  278. and they tell him

  279. everything else

  280. that he needed to know.

  281. Presumably things like

  282. the day of Pentecost

  283. and the baptism

  284. of the Holy Spirit.

  285. And the verb

  286. that is used

  287. of them

  288. in verse 26

  289. is they explained.

  290. They explained

  291. to Apollos

  292. and they made sure

  293. that he had

  294. a full understanding.

  295. Now can you see

  296. the pattern

  297. that's emerging

  298. from Acts 18?

  299. almost all the verbs

  300. that he used

  301. to describe Paul

  302. and his companions

  303. are verbs

  304. of speaking.

  305. The heart

  306. of apostolic ministry,

  307. the shape

  308. of New Testament

  309. ministry

  310. is that people

  311. open their mouths

  312. to make Jesus known.

  313. speaking,

  314. teaching,

  315. testifying,

  316. refuting,

  317. explaining,

  318. strengthening.

  319. And so is it

  320. any wonder

  321. when Jesus

  322. turns up on the scene

  323. in a vision

  324. we read about here

  325. in verse 9,

  326. one night,

  327. what's the main

  328. exhortation

  329. of verse 9?

  330. What's the big message

  331. for Paul?

  332. Keep on speaking.

  333. And Jesus

  334. is the one

  335. they speak about.

  336. And what Paul

  337. and his companions

  338. are seeking

  339. to convince people of

  340. is that Jesus

  341. is the king,

  342. Jesus is the messiah.

  343. If you want to know

  344. the content

  345. of their message,

  346. Acts 18 underlines

  347. again in verse 5

  348. and then in verse 28,

  349. what is the apostolic

  350. message?

  351. It is convincing people

  352. that Jesus

  353. is the messiah,

  354. Jesus is the king.

  355. And you and I

  356. today who have

  357. bowed to Jesus'

  358. kingship,

  359. continue to exercise

  360. this ministry.

  361. Jesus is Lord.

  362. And so our message

  363. is this really,

  364. isn't it?

  365. Jesus is Lord

  366. and what are you

  367. going to do about it?

  368. And if you're somebody

  369. who's maybe here

  370. and we're really

  371. thrilled that you're here

  372. but you haven't

  373. bowed your knee

  374. and confessed

  375. with your mouth

  376. that Jesus Christ

  377. is king,

  378. what are you going

  379. to do with him?

  380. The second thing

  381. in Acts 18

  382. it shows us

  383. about the shape

  384. of gospel ministry

  385. is that speaking

  386. about Jesus

  387. will produce

  388. some opposing

  389. reactions,

  390. opposing responses.

  391. And that certainly

  392. happens in this chapter

  393. just like we've seen

  394. it happen all the way

  395. through Acts.

  396. In verse 5

  397. we learned

  398. what we Paul

  399. is preaching

  400. to the Jews

  401. in Corinth

  402. very kind of

  403. devotedly

  404. and then in verse 6

  405. we see how they reacted

  406. and it says

  407. they opposed Paul

  408. and literally

  409. they became abusive.

  410. He shook out

  411. his clothes

  412. he says to them

  413. your blood be

  414. on your own heads

  415. I'm innocent

  416. from now on

  417. I'll go to the Gentiles.

  418. As a Jew himself

  419. it was Paul's habit

  420. to go first

  421. to his own people

  422. in the synagogue

  423. wherever he went

  424. to a new city.

  425. And the same

  426. is true here

  427. but they respond

  428. abusively to him.

  429. And so Paul

  430. has got no qualms

  431. from turning away

  432. from the Jewish ministry

  433. at this point

  434. in order

  435. to take the good news

  436. to the Gentiles

  437. the rest of the world.

  438. And verse 7

  439. tells us that

  440. he went next door

  441. and he starts

  442. sharing with a man

  443. who had a very Roman

  444. named

  445. Titus

  446. Justice.

  447. And there's a strong

  448. reaction against Paul.

  449. Verse 12 and 13

  450. says when

  451. Galio was

  452. proconsul

  453. of Achaia

  454. the Jews

  455. made a united

  456. attack on Paul

  457. and they brought him

  458. before the tribunal

  459. they dragged him

  460. into court

  461. saying this man

  462. is persuading people

  463. to worship God

  464. contrary to the law.

  465. And Galio

  466. is a wise owl

  467. you can see

  468. this is a frivolous

  469. lawsuit

  470. as far as

  471. the Roman law

  472. is concerned.

  473. So he chucks

  474. him out of court.

  475. But once again

  476. can you see

  477. the determination

  478. of people

  479. to stop

  480. the apostolic

  481. work

  482. even through

  483. the courts.

  484. And I think

  485. that's a pattern

  486. that continues

  487. right to this day

  488. but of course

  489. wonderfully

  490. the opposite

  491. is true too.

  492. And here's

  493. the third thing

  494. Acts points out

  495. to us

  496. the shape

  497. of gospel ministry

  498. it provokes

  499. an opposing

  500. response

  501. but can you also

  502. see it leads

  503. to a welcoming

  504. response too.

  505. It's most notable

  506. I think

  507. verse 8

  508. let me read

  509. that to you

  510. again.

  511. Do you remember

  512. the Jews

  513. had gone

  514. Peter had gone

  515. to the

  516. Paul had gone

  517. to the synagogue

  518. to speak to the Jews

  519. what had the Jews

  520. done?

  521. They kicked him

  522. out of the synagogue.

  523. Verse 8

  524. Crispus

  525. the ruler

  526. of the synagogue

  527. believed in the Lord

  528. together with

  529. his entire

  530. household

  531. and many

  532. of the Corinthians

  533. hearing Paul

  534. believed or

  535. baptized

  536. even though

  537. Paul had

  538. turned his

  539. back on the Jews

  540. who'd opposed him

  541. verse 6

  542. it isn't the

  543. whole story

  544. because the

  545. synagogue leader

  546. becomes a

  547. Christian

  548. and his

  549. household.

  550. I can

  551. imagine

  552. that

  553. Paul

  554. this

  555. cat

  556. Crispus

  557. would have

  558. been in this

  559. category of

  560. people

  561. that Paul

  562. would have

  563. been forgiven

  564. for thinking

  565. they'll never

  566. become a

  567. Christian

  568. that

  569. they'll never

  570. become a

  571. Christian

  572. they're so

  573. unlikely to

  574. turn to

  575. Jesus Christ

  576. the very

  577. leader of

  578. the synagogue

  579. where Paul

  580. is kicked

  581. out of

  582. as if he

  583. would ever

  584. become a

  585. Christian

  586. but here

  587. he is

  588. listening to

  589. God's

  590. word as

  591. one who

  592. believed

  593. he and all

  594. his household

  595. we used

  596. to do

  597. some of us

  598. men

  599. we'd meet

  600. with people

  601. from the

  602. mosque

  603. and the

  604. imam at

  605. the mosque

  606. for meetings

  607. about better

  608. understanding

  609. one of us

  610. would speak

  611. on a topic

  612. and the

  613. imam would

  614. speak and

  615. we'd have a

  616. bit of a

  617. discussion

  618. they weren't

  619. particularly

  620. profitable

  621. but the

  622. one person

  623. who I

  624. thought would

  625. not be

  626. converted

  627. is the

  628. imam

  629. and yet

  630. here we

  631. see

  632. in a

  633. similar

  634. context

  635. they're

  636. so angry

  637. these Jews

  638. and yet

  639. the ruler

  640. of the

  641. synagogue

  642. is converted

  643. verse 8

  644. tells us

  645. there were

  646. many others

  647. that believed

  648. with him

  649. also

  650. I think

  651. you see

  652. the same

  653. response

  654. in Apollos'

  655. ministry

  656. Apollos is

  657. already a

  658. Christian

  659. he comes

  660. to Ephesus

  661. and he

  662. welcomes

  663. the correction

  664. of both

  665. Priscilla

  666. and Aquila

  667. they want

  668. to help

  669. him to

  670. learn more

  671. and he's

  672. humble enough

  673. to receive

  674. it

  675. so can

  676. you see

  677. chapter 18

  678. is reminding

  679. us what

  680. we see

  681. repeatedly

  682. in the

  683. book of

  684. Acts

  685. that the

  686. gospel of

  687. Jesus

  688. always divides

  689. people

  690. there are

  691. those who

  692. are hostile

  693. to its

  694. message and

  695. messengers

  696. and there

  697. are those

  698. who receive

  699. and accept

  700. it

  701. and there

  702. are other

  703. kinds of

  704. responses

  705. as well

  706. but the

  707. accumulative

  708. effect of us

  709. working through

  710. Acts on me

  711. has been

  712. that we should

  713. always expect

  714. these two

  715. things

  716. some opposing

  717. some

  718. welcoming

  719. so the

  720. fourth

  721. thing

  722. that

  723. chapter 18

  724. of Acts

  725. tells us

  726. about the

  727. shape of

  728. gospel ministry

  729. is alongside

  730. the apostolic

  731. work

  732. and threaded

  733. through the

  734. different

  735. responses of

  736. rejecting

  737. and accepting

  738. there's a

  739. divine work

  740. as well

  741. and so

  742. God is

  743. working here

  744. and I want

  745. you to

  746. see the

  747. dimensions

  748. so look

  749. at verse 9

  750. again

  751. because in

  752. verse 9

  753. we see that

  754. God is at

  755. work there

  756. to encourage

  757. the people

  758. who are

  759. doing the

  760. apostolic

  761. work

  762. he appears

  763. to Paul

  764. in a vision

  765. and he urges

  766. him do not

  767. be afraid

  768. keep on

  769. speaking

  770. as a result

  771. Paul stays

  772. in Corinth

  773. for about a

  774. year and a

  775. half

  776. that's quite

  777. a long

  778. time for

  779. him

  780. but it's

  781. very important

  782. for you and

  783. I to see

  784. what Jesus

  785. goes on to

  786. say in

  787. verse 10

  788. in this

  789. vision

  790. let me read

  791. it to you

  792. I'll read

  793. from verse 9

  794. the Lord

  795. said to

  796. Paul

  797. one night

  798. in a

  799. vision

  800. do not

  801. be afraid

  802. go on

  803. speaking

  804. do not

  805. be silent

  806. for I

  807. am with

  808. you

  809. and no

  810. one

  811. will attack

  812. you

  813. or harm

  814. you

  815. for I

  816. have many

  817. in this

  818. city

  819. who are

  820. my people

  821. so first

  822. of all

  823. there's a

  824. promise of

  825. protection

  826. there isn't

  827. there

  828. and of

  829. course that

  830. isn't a

  831. promise that

  832. God makes

  833. to everyone

  834. we know

  835. don't we

  836. we pray

  837. for Christians

  838. who are

  839. suffering

  840. terribly

  841. all over

  842. the world

  843. because of

  844. their faithfulness

  845. to Jesus

  846. Paul went

  847. to other

  848. cities and

  849. he was

  850. attacked and

  851. he was harmed

  852. and he was

  853. beaten up

  854. we've seen

  855. that so it

  856. seems that

  857. here there's a

  858. special arrangement

  859. God made in order

  860. to prolong Paul's

  861. ministry

  862. in order to

  863. prolong it

  864. but can you see

  865. the other part of

  866. the encouragement

  867. that Jesus gives

  868. in verse 10

  869. he tells

  870. him that

  871. he has

  872. many people

  873. in this

  874. city

  875. that's an

  876. interesting

  877. phrase

  878. isn't it

  879. I don't

  880. think that

  881. Jesus is

  882. talking about

  883. people who've

  884. already become

  885. Christians

  886. no I think

  887. what he's doing

  888. there is he's

  889. encouraging Paul

  890. to keep speaking

  891. the gospel

  892. because Jesus

  893. has more

  894. people in

  895. Corinth

  896. who are

  897. going to

  898. respond

  899. positively

  900. to the gospel

  901. he's speaking

  902. about that

  903. group of

  904. people that

  905. the Bible

  906. elsewhere calls

  907. the elect

  908. the chosen

  909. those who

  910. are chosen

  911. by God

  912. to respond

  913. to the gospel

  914. with faith

  915. so do you

  916. remember

  917. Jesus said

  918. in John 10

  919. and I have

  920. other sheep

  921. that are not

  922. of this fold

  923. and I must

  924. bring them in

  925. also

  926. and they

  927. will

  928. listen to

  929. my voice

  930. so there

  931. will be

  932. one flock

  933. one shepherd

  934. and I think

  935. here in act 6

  936. Jesus is

  937. reminding Paul

  938. that behind

  939. every conversion

  940. is divine

  941. election

  942. Jesus the

  943. good shepherd

  944. has his

  945. sheep

  946. those who

  947. will

  948. welcome the

  949. gospel

  950. when Paul

  951. shares it

  952. those whom

  953. God has

  954. chosen and

  955. called

  956. so the

  957. divine work

  958. here

  959. is the

  960. setting

  961. of side

  962. of people

  963. for faith

  964. for salvation

  965. and so

  966. Paul

  967. is encouraged

  968. keep sharing

  969. the gospel

  970. keep telling

  971. others

  972. because

  973. there are

  974. those in

  975. Corinth

  976. whom God

  977. has chosen

  978. to be saved

  979. who have not

  980. yet responded

  981. it's an amazing

  982. encouragement to say

  983. Paul you're not

  984. on a fool's

  985. errand

  986. it's not up

  987. to you

  988. there are

  989. those whom

  990. God has

  991. chosen

  992. you go

  993. and preach

  994. the gospel

  995. and there

  996. will be

  997. people

  998. that respond

  999. there's one

  1000. other reminder

  1001. of God's

  1002. sovereignty

  1003. in the

  1004. apostolic

  1005. work

  1006. it's in

  1007. verse 27

  1008. and I'm

  1009. just going

  1010. to read

  1011. it to

  1012. you

  1013. can you

  1014. hear it

  1015. it's at

  1016. the end

  1017. Apollos

  1018. it's a really

  1019. simple thing

  1020. when he

  1021. arrived

  1022. what did

  1023. he do

  1024. he greatly

  1025. helped

  1026. those who

  1027. through grace

  1028. had believed

  1029. let me

  1030. just spend

  1031. a little bit

  1032. of time

  1033. on that

  1034. verse

  1035. for a

  1036. moment

  1037. Apollos

  1038. greatly

  1039. helped

  1040. those

  1041. who

  1042. through

  1043. grace

  1044. had

  1045. believed

  1046. how

  1047. did

  1048. the

  1049. people

  1050. in

  1051. Achaia

  1052. come to

  1053. believe

  1054. the gospel

  1055. from that

  1056. verse

  1057. can you

  1058. see it

  1059. so there

  1060. are two

  1061. answers

  1062. on that

  1063. the first

  1064. answer

  1065. is this

  1066. Apollos

  1067. helped

  1068. them

  1069. how did

  1070. Apollos

  1071. help

  1072. them

  1073. well

  1074. presumably

  1075. he did

  1076. so by

  1077. speaking

  1078. the gospel

  1079. of Jesus

  1080. refuting

  1081. false

  1082. ideas

  1083. reasoning

  1084. with them

  1085. persuading

  1086. them to

  1087. trust in

  1088. Jesus

  1089. how did

  1090. the people

  1091. in Achaia

  1092. become

  1093. Christians

  1094. Apollos

  1095. helped

  1096. them

  1097. what's

  1098. the second

  1099. reason

  1100. they

  1101. believed

  1102. the gospel

  1103. because of

  1104. God's

  1105. grace

  1106. God's

  1107. grace

  1108. do you

  1109. see that

  1110. there

  1111. it

  1112. says

  1113. doesn't

  1114. it

  1115. by

  1116. grace

  1117. they

  1118. had

  1119. believed

  1120. and the

  1121. same

  1122. could be

  1123. said

  1124. for

  1125. anyone

  1126. who's

  1127. believed

  1128. the

  1129. gospel

  1130. how did

  1131. Paul

  1132. Levy

  1133. first

  1134. come to

  1135. believe

  1136. the gospel

  1137. of Jesus

  1138. Christ

  1139. there's

  1140. two

  1141. answers

  1142. to that

  1143. the

  1144. first

  1145. answer

  1146. is that

  1147. people

  1148. like

  1149. Alan

  1150. and

  1151. Mary

  1152. people

  1153. like

  1154. Hugh

  1155. and

  1156. Brian

  1157. helped

  1158. me

  1159. my

  1160. parents

  1161. Alan

  1162. and

  1163. Mary

  1164. taught

  1165. and

  1166. modeled

  1167. the

  1168. gospel

  1169. to

  1170. me

  1171. Hugh

  1172. and

  1173. Brian

  1174. taught

  1175. me

  1176. in

  1177. Sunday

  1178. school

  1179. and

  1180. prayed

  1181. for me

  1182. that

  1183. I

  1184. would

  1185. learn

  1186. about

  1187. God

  1188. and

  1189. so

  1190. that's

  1191. the

  1192. first

  1193. answer

  1194. it

  1195. was

  1196. people

  1197. like

  1198. Alan

  1199. and

  1200. Mary

  1201. and

  1202. Hugh

  1203. and

  1204. Brian

  1205. but

  1206. there's

  1207. a second

  1208. answer

  1209. isn't

  1210. it

  1211. the

  1212. grace

  1213. of

  1214. God

  1215. is

  1216. the

  1217. second

  1218. answer

  1219. God

  1220. made

  1221. sure

  1222. I

  1223. heard

  1224. the

  1225. gospel

  1226. God

  1227. opened

  1228. my

  1229. mind

  1230. so

  1231. I

  1232. could

  1233. see

  1234. the

  1235. truth

  1236. of

  1237. it

  1238. God

  1239. granted

  1240. me

  1241. strength

  1242. to

  1243. turn

  1244. away

  1245. from

  1246. my

  1247. sins

  1248. and

  1249. stop

  1250. living

  1251. for

  1252. myself

  1253. God

  1254. helped

  1255. me

  1256. to

  1257. trust

  1258. in

  1259. him

  1260. and

  1261. he

  1262. did

  1263. all

  1264. of

  1265. that

  1266. though

  1267. I

  1268. don't

  1269. deserve

  1270. any

  1271. of

  1272. it

  1273. and

  1274. if

  1275. you

  1276. are

  1277. a

  1278. Christian

  1279. here

  1280. this

  1281. morning

  1282. if

  1283. you

  1284. are

  1285. somebody

  1286. who's

  1287. trusted

  1288. in

  1289. the

  1290. Lord

  1291. Jesus

  1292. your

  1293. story

  1294. is

  1295. the

  1296. same

  1297. as

  1298. mine

  1299. how

  1300. did

  1301. you

  1302. come

  1303. to

  1304. believe

  1305. the

  1306. gospel

  1307. there's

  1308. two

  1309. answers

  1310. one

  1311. a

  1312. person

  1313. or

  1314. some

  1315. people

  1316. helped

  1317. you

  1318. and

  1319. secondly

  1320. the

  1321. grace

  1322. of

  1323. God

  1324. was

  1325. at

  1326. work

  1327. in

  1328. you

  1329. a

  1330. divine

  1331. work

  1332. you

  1333. might

  1334. not be

  1335. like

  1336. me

  1337. at

  1338. all

  1339. you

  1340. might

  1341. really

  1342. like

  1343. surprises

  1344. and

  1345. that

  1346. is

  1347. fine

  1348. the

  1349. Bible

  1350. thankfully

  1351. wasn't

  1352. written

  1353. for

  1354. people

  1355. with

  1356. personalities

  1357. like

  1358. mine

  1359. not

  1360. all

  1361. of

  1362. it

  1363. anyway

  1364. you

  1365. might

  1366. really

  1367. like

  1368. surprises

  1369. whether

  1370. you

  1371. like

  1372. to

  1373. have

  1374. really

  1375. clear

  1376. expectations

  1377. or

  1378. you're

  1379. happy

  1380. to

  1381. roll

  1382. with

  1383. whatever

  1384. life

  1385. throws

  1386. at

  1387. you

  1388. God

  1389. thinks

  1390. that

  1391. it

  1392. is

  1393. good

  1394. for

  1395. us

  1396. to

  1397. know

  1398. something

  1399. in

  1400. advance

  1401. so

  1402. whether

  1403. you

  1404. like

  1405. to

  1406. have

  1407. a

  1408. really

  1409. clear

  1410. expectation

  1411. or

  1412. whether

  1413. you're

  1414. happy

  1415. to

  1416. roll

  1417. with

  1418. whatever

  1419. life

  1420. throws

  1421. at

  1422. you

  1423. God

  1424. thinks

  1425. it

  1426. is

  1427. good

  1428. for

  1429. you

  1430. to

  1431. know

  1432. some

  1433. things

  1434. in

  1435. advance

  1436. !

  1437. and one

  1438. of

  1439. those

  1440. things

  1441. that

  1442. God

  1443. wants

  1444. you

  1445. to

  1446. know

  1447. this

  1448. morning

  1449. is

  1450. when

  1451. you

  1452. speak

  1453. the

  1454. gospel

  1455. that

  1456. you

  1457. will

  1458. know

  1459. what

  1460. is

  1461. coming

  1462. it's

  1463. important

  1464. isn't

  1465. it

  1466. when

  1467. there

  1468. are

  1469. opposing

  1470. responses

  1471. that

  1472. you

  1473. know

  1474. what's

  1475. coming

  1476. already

  1477. it's

  1478. a

  1479. great

  1480. help

  1481. when

  1482. people

  1483. oppose

  1484. the

  1485. gospel

  1486. that

  1487. we

  1488. are

  1489. not

  1490. taken

  1491. by

  1492. surprise

  1493. and

  1494. God

  1495. is

  1496. not

  1497. taken

  1498. by

  1499. surprise

  1500. and

  1501. it

  1502. shouldn't

  1503. surprise

  1504. us

  1505. either

  1506. the

  1507. New

  1508. Testament

  1509. tells

  1510. you

  1511. and

  1512. I

  1513. that

  1514. persecution

  1515. is

  1516. normal

  1517. and

  1518. people

  1519. being

  1520. hostile

  1521. to

  1522. Christianity

  1523. is

  1524. normal

  1525. and

  1526. people

  1527. speaking

  1528. out

  1529. about

  1530. Christian

  1531. belief

  1532. is

  1533. not

  1534. new

  1535. it

  1536. is

  1537. not

  1538. unique

  1539. in

  1540. our

  1541. moment

  1542. in

  1543. history

  1544. and

  1545. we

  1546. should

  1547. expect

  1548. it

  1549. and

  1550. in

  1551. fact

  1552. knowing

  1553. we

  1554. should

  1555. expect

  1556. it

  1557. should

  1558. be

  1559. a

  1560. great

  1561. help

  1562. to

  1563. us

  1564. it

  1565. means

  1566. that

  1567. when

  1568. persecution

  1569. comes

  1570. to

  1571. this

  1572. church

  1573. and

  1574. it

  1575. comes

  1576. to

  1577. you

  1578. mustn't

  1579. think

  1580. the

  1581. wheels

  1582. are

  1583. falling

  1584. off

  1585. having

  1586. clear

  1587. expectations

  1588. assists

  1589. us

  1590. but

  1591. I

  1592. want to

  1593. stress

  1594. this

  1595. this

  1596. morning

  1597. having

  1598. clear

  1599. expectations

  1600. can

  1601. grow

  1602. inside

  1603. of us

  1604. what

  1605. we

  1606. might

  1607. call

  1608. expectancy

  1609. expectations

  1610. are things

  1611. that you

  1612. possess

  1613. expectancy

  1614. is something

  1615. that you

  1616. feel

  1617. expectancy

  1618. is the

  1619. anticipation

  1620. of

  1621. something

  1622. good

  1623. happening

  1624. and

  1625. those

  1626. who are

  1627. expecting

  1628. babies

  1629. you are

  1630. expectant

  1631. those who

  1632. are engaged

  1633. you are

  1634. looking forward

  1635. in

  1636. expectancy

  1637. it's the

  1638. anticipation

  1639. of something

  1640. good

  1641. happening

  1642. and it

  1643. seems to

  1644. me that

  1645. the book

  1646. of Acts

  1647. has been

  1648. designed

  1649. and has been

  1650. written

  1651. to prepare

  1652. us for

  1653. the hard

  1654. moments

  1655. in speaking

  1656. the gospel

  1657. but also

  1658. to stir

  1659. up

  1660. expectancy

  1661. because when

  1662. the gospel

  1663. is spoken

  1664. people don't

  1665. just respond

  1666. with opposition

  1667. some respond

  1668. with a

  1669. welcome

  1670. and not

  1671. only that

  1672. but God

  1673. is working

  1674. in Acts

  1675. to remind

  1676. us that

  1677. God's grace

  1678. comes to

  1679. people to

  1680. help them

  1681. believe

  1682. and God

  1683. has people

  1684. God has

  1685. people whom

  1686. he's chosen

  1687. and who

  1688. he will

  1689. call

  1690. but who

  1691. aren't yet

  1692. believers

  1693. God has

  1694. people like

  1695. that

  1696. and so

  1697. let me ask

  1698. you

  1699. and those

  1700. of us

  1701. who are

  1702. regulars

  1703. here

  1704. let me

  1705. ask

  1706. you

  1707. do you

  1708. believe

  1709. that

  1710. do you

  1711. really

  1712. believe

  1713. that

  1714. and if

  1715. so

  1716. are you

  1717. expecting

  1718. to see

  1719. God at

  1720. work

  1721. is your

  1722. heart

  1723. expected

  1724. I have

  1725. to admit

  1726. that my

  1727. heart is

  1728. often

  1729. something

  1730. else

  1731. sometimes

  1732. my

  1733. heart

  1734. is

  1735. impatient

  1736. sometimes

  1737. my heart

  1738. is

  1739. pessimistic

  1740. sometimes

  1741. when I

  1742. think about

  1743. God's

  1744. work in

  1745. the world

  1746. particularly

  1747. in the

  1748. UK

  1749. I'm

  1750. sceptical

  1751. and it's

  1752. very easy

  1753. it seems

  1754. to me

  1755. to look

  1756. all around

  1757. at the

  1758. opposition

  1759. to the

  1760. gospel

  1761. and see

  1762. that we're

  1763. surrounded

  1764. by not

  1765. just

  1766. hostility

  1767. but

  1768. widespread

  1769. apathy

  1770. the apathy

  1771. is worse

  1772. than the

  1773. hostility

  1774. and find

  1775. it really

  1776. disheartening

  1777. and if

  1778. you're

  1779. anything

  1780. like me

  1781. you find

  1782. that it's

  1783. very easy

  1784. to see

  1785. your own

  1786. failures

  1787. in sharing

  1788. the gospel

  1789. I seem

  1790. to be a

  1791. master

  1792. at missing

  1793. opportunities

  1794. and I

  1795. don't pray

  1796. as earnestly

  1797. for people

  1798. as I wish

  1799. I did

  1800. and I

  1801. sometimes

  1802. frankly

  1803. don't care

  1804. about people

  1805. being lost

  1806. in the way

  1807. that I

  1808. should

  1809. I also

  1810. find it

  1811. really easy

  1812. just to see

  1813. how people

  1814. happy people

  1815. seem to be

  1816. living without

  1817. Jesus

  1818. when I

  1819. think about

  1820. the neighbours

  1821. that live

  1822. on my

  1823. street

  1824. whom I

  1825. know

  1826. my friends

  1827. who don't

  1828. believe

  1829. their lives

  1830. in many

  1831. cases

  1832. don't appear

  1833. on the

  1834. surface

  1835. to be

  1836. all that

  1837. broken

  1838. and I

  1839. find it

  1840. hard to

  1841. believe

  1842. that actually

  1843. they need

  1844. Jesus

  1845. more than

  1846. anything

  1847. else

  1848. and for

  1849. me it's

  1850. easier

  1851. to see

  1852. all of

  1853. those

  1854. things

  1855. so much

  1856. that I'm

  1857. prone to

  1858. forget

  1859. what God

  1860. tells me

  1861. in his

  1862. word

  1863. I'm

  1864. prone to

  1865. seeing all

  1866. those

  1867. things

  1868. that I've

  1869. just

  1870. described

  1871. more

  1872. clearly

  1873. than what

  1874. the Bible

  1875. teaches me

  1876. about

  1877. God's

  1878. work

  1879. and of

  1880. course

  1881. the evidence

  1882. that exists

  1883. for what

  1884. God tells

  1885. me is

  1886. all around

  1887. us in

  1888. the world

  1889. people are

  1890. becoming

  1891. Christians

  1892. and people

  1893. are welcoming

  1894. the message

  1895. of Jesus

  1896. and God

  1897. has not

  1898. packed up

  1899. and gone

  1900. home

  1901. he is

  1902. still

  1903. graciously

  1904. at work

  1905. in our

  1906. world

  1907. in his

  1908. sovereign

  1909. purpose

  1910. choosing

  1911. people to

  1912. belong

  1913. to him

  1914. and he

  1915. has many

  1916. people in

  1917. our city

  1918. too

  1919. presumably

  1920. he has

  1921. people in

  1922. Ealing

  1923. in Hanwell

  1924. in Greenfoot

  1925. in Northolt

  1926. presumably

  1927. he has

  1928. people in

  1929. your school

  1930. and at

  1931. your

  1932. workplace

  1933. in your

  1934. family

  1935. amongst your

  1936. neighbours

  1937. and friends

  1938. he has

  1939. people who

  1940. don't yet

  1941. believe

  1942. but one

  1943. day

  1944. will

  1945. as it

  1946. were

  1947. they are

  1948. waiting for

  1949. someone to

  1950. come and

  1951. share the

  1952. gospel with

  1953. them

  1954. and that

  1955. is a

  1956. tremendous

  1957. encouragement

  1958. isn't it

  1959. and I

  1960. need to

  1961. keep

  1962. reminding

  1963. myself

  1964. of that

  1965. that God

  1966. might grow

  1967. expectancy

  1968. in my

  1969. heart

  1970. and maybe

  1971. you need

  1972. that as

  1973. well

  1974. that you

  1975. and I

  1976. as the

  1977. church here

  1978. in IPC

  1979. in Ealing

  1980. we have a

  1981. continuing

  1982. part to

  1983. play in

  1984. the apostolic

  1985. work

  1986. we are not

  1987. apostles

  1988. of course

  1989. but the

  1990. apostolic

  1991. gospel has

  1992. been passed

  1993. down to

  1994. us

  1995. and it

  1996. hasn't

  1997. changed

  1998. and Jesus

  1999. is still

  2000. the Messiah

  2001. he is still

  2002. the king

  2003. that they

  2004. proclaimed now

  2005. then that we

  2006. proclaim now

  2007. he is the

  2008. king who

  2009. died for his

  2010. people

  2011. the king who

  2012. came back to

  2013. life to

  2014. rule forever

  2015. and one day

  2016. he will come

  2017. back to judge

  2018. and between

  2019. now and

  2020. that day

  2021. the work

  2022. of God

  2023. the divine

  2024. work continues

  2025. and God

  2026. continues to

  2027. use people

  2028. to help

  2029. others

  2030. see him

  2031. and turn to

  2032. him

  2033. and he uses

  2034. people like

  2035. you and

  2036. people like

  2037. me

  2038. and we

  2039. ought to

  2040. expect that

  2041. he will

  2042. we ought

  2043. to expect

  2044. him to do

  2045. his work

  2046. around us

  2047. in the people

  2048. we know

  2049. and we ought

  2050. to repent

  2051. of our

  2052. pessimism

  2053. and our

  2054. doubt

  2055. I need

  2056. to

  2057. and we

  2058. ought to

  2059. keep coming

  2060. back to the

  2061. pages of the

  2062. Bible so

  2063. that our

  2064. hearts would

  2065. be stirred

  2066. again

  2067. stirred to

  2068. expectancy

  2069. by his

  2070. sovereign power

  2071. and his

  2072. irresistible

  2073. grace

  2074. verse 8

  2075. christmas

  2076. christmas

  2077. christmas

  2078. christmas

  2079. to his

  2080. friends

  2081. the ruler

  2082. of the

  2083. synagogue

  2084. believed in

  2085. the lord

  2086. and together

  2087. with his

  2088. entire

  2089. household

  2090. and many

  2091. of the

  2092. corinthians

  2093. hearing paul

  2094. believed

  2095. and were

  2096. baptized

  2097. and the

  2098. lord said

  2099. to paul

  2100. one night

  2101. in a

  2102. vision

  2103. do not

  2104. be afraid

  2105. but go

  2106. on speaking

  2107. and do

  2108. not be

  2109. silent

  2110. why do

  2111. you need

  2112. to be

  2113. told

  2114. to go

  2115. on speaking

  2116. and do

  2117. not be

  2118. silent

  2119. because

  2120. what's

  2121. the

  2122. temptation

  2123. the

  2124. temptation

  2125. is to

  2126. stop

  2127. speaking

  2128. and to

  2129. be

  2130. silent

  2131. jesus

  2132. says

  2133. for i

  2134. am with

  2135. you

  2136. and no

  2137. one

  2138. will

  2139. attack

  2140. you

  2141. to

  2142. harm

  2143. you

  2144. for

  2145. i

  2146. have

  2147. many

  2148. in

  2149. this

  2150. city

  2151. who

  2152. are

  2153. my

  2154. people

  2155. let's

  2156. pray
