  1. The 1980s philosopher Phil Collins once wrote, you always need to hear both sides of the story.

  2. !

  3. The first explanation is about people, people that God used to persuade you, to speak to you about the gospel.

  4. The second explanation of how you became a follower of the Lord Jesus is about the grace of God and God's total undeserved kindness.

  5. Both those things are true.

  6. People come to faith because of the work of other people and because of the work of God.

  7. At the end of the day they're the same thing, aren't they?

  8. And in actual fact that reflects a reality that is true all the way through this book of Acts.

  9. What I'm going to call two stories.

  10. There's the story of what the early church and the early Christians were doing.

  11. But there's also the story of what Jesus was doing by his spirit.

  12. Acts is rightly called, isn't it, the Acts of the Apostles.

  13. But it could also be called the Acts of God.

  14. Both those stories are important.

  15. And they are inextricably linked.

  16. You always need to hear both sides of the story.

  17. And so as we come to this chapter in Acts 19, what I want to do is I want to really talk you through the chapter in kind of four different headings.

  18. And then I want to go back over the story and give you four things that God is doing.

  19. So really there's eight points.

  20. But I didn't want to tell you that.

  21. Four really.

  22. Versus one to seven.

  23. Can you look it down?

  24. It's Paul and the disciples with John.

  25. Paul and the disciples of John.

  26. He's been in Ephesus chapter 18.

  27. You might remember that.

  28. And the Ephesians have gone to him and said, Paul, can't you stay a little bit longer?

  29. Paul has declined.

  30. Nevertheless, he told them, I will come back if God allowed him to.

  31. And so here is Paul and the return of Paul to Ephesus.

  32. And when he gets there, the first people that he meets are disciples of John the Baptist.

  33. And they obviously see themselves as believers.

  34. But for some reason, Paul is not sure they've got the same picture.

  35. So he asks them, have you received the Holy Spirit?

  36. They say, received the Holy Spirit?

  37. We haven't even heard of the Holy Spirit.

  38. And so Paul asks them about their baptism.

  39. And they admit, well, we received the baptism for the forgiveness of sins of John the Baptist.

  40. So Paul helps them to understand, doesn't he, things more fully.

  41. The first thing he does is, he says, you need to know that John's ministry, I was pointing forward.

  42. It was pointing to the one who came after him.

  43. So look again at verse 4 of the chapter.

  44. Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance.

  45. Telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him.

  46. That is Jesus.

  47. And so Paul baptizes them again.

  48. And he baptizes them into the name of Jesus.

  49. Paul places his hands upon them.

  50. And the Holy Spirit came to them.

  51. They speak in tongues.

  52. And prophesied.

  53. Again, it is a picture, isn't it, of a mini Pentecost.

  54. That is the point.

  55. What is happening here is unique.

  56. It is quite unique.

  57. Because you and I, when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, the moment that we believe in him, we receive the Holy Spirit.

  58. People don't, ordinarily, break into tongues or prophecy.

  59. This is an unusual time in the history of the church.

  60. The Old Testament era has come to an end in many ways.

  61. John the Baptist is the era's final prophet.

  62. And the New Testament era has arrived with the coming of Jesus and the coming of the Spirit.

  63. So this is, in the book of Acts, a transitional time.

  64. And here we find people who have not made the switch on that day of Pentecost.

  65. The speaking of tongues and prophecy were a sign given to the early church of this new era's arrival.

  66. We mustn't expect what went on in the early church, in that foundational period, to be mirrored exactly today.

  67. And that's why elements of Pentecost are again seen in Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  68. These people must know Christ and they must have his Spirit.

  69. And so Paul is seeking a servant at the end.

  70. That's the first section.

  71. The second section, and Paul preaches publicly.

  72. 8 to 11.

  73. Paul, usual strategy, where does he go?

  74. First of all, first stop in town, you go to the synagogue.

  75. To the Jew first.

  76. The Jews, many Jews, as per normal, refused to believe,

  77. despite Paul spending three months there arguing.

  78. And very persuasively, many had hard hearts.

  79. They're described in verse 19, aren't they?

  80. As stubborn, as obstinate.

  81. They publicly criticise the Christian faith.

  82. They refer to it as the way.

  83. That's what the Christian faith was first known as.

  84. The way.

  85. I think it's referring back to Jesus saying,

  86. I am the way.

  87. The truth and the life.

  88. And so as a result, Paul leaves the synagogue and goes elsewhere.

  89. And he chooses to rent a lecture hall, a town hall,

  90. where he's able to hold a lunchtime service.

  91. With people who wanted to come.

  92. People who wanted to engage.

  93. Amazingly, he preached at lunchtimes for two years.

  94. And the outcome, according, well, it's remarkable.

  95. Listen, look at verse 10.

  96. It continued for two years, Paul speaking in this lecture hall,

  97. so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord,

  98. both Jews and Greeks.

  99. That is an astonishing statement.

  100. All the Jews and all the Greeks.

  101. Well, that is kind of everyone, isn't it?

  102. Presumably, that doesn't mean that everyone came and visited the lecture hall in Tyrannus

  103. and heard Paul speak.

  104. But I think it's trying to suggest to you and I that those who heard Paul in that lecture hall

  105. and maybe debated with him,

  106. they went back to their towns and their villages all over Asia

  107. and they talked about that message

  108. so that the news about Jesus spread everywhere.

  109. The reach of Paul's ministry in this way is incredible.

  110. And I guess that's another reminder to you, isn't it?

  111. That obstinate opposition and public criticism

  112. cannot stop the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

  113. Thirdly, and we turn to verses 11 to 22,

  114. and we see there the power of God at work.

  115. Verse 11 and 12 tell us about these miracles

  116. that Paul was able to perform.

  117. Verse 11, God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

  118. so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin

  119. were carried away to the sick

  120. and their diseases left him

  121. and the evil spirits came out of them.

  122. This is unique, isn't it?

  123. Other people in Ephesus, I'm hearing about this,

  124. they saw this, they thought it's very, very exciting

  125. and suddenly they want a slice of the action.

  126. I was telling somebody this week who was my age

  127. and we were talking about when you were in school.

  128. Do you remember on a Monday or a Tuesday of the week,

  129. somebody would come into school with a yo-yo?

  130. Do you know what a yo-yo is?

  131. And by Friday, everyone in the school had a yo-yo.

  132. It was this astonishing thing, wasn't it?

  133. Do you children know what a yo-yo is?

  134. You don't know what it is, do you?

  135. Ask your parents about what a yo-yo is.

  136. But it was this astonishing craze, wasn't it?

  137. Everyone had a yo-yo.

  138. If you didn't have a yo-yo by the end of the week,

  139. you were badgering the amount of time.

  140. You felt terribly left out.

  141. Well, something similar is happening in verses 11 and 12.

  142. I told these seven sons of Sceva, they're magicians.

  143. They look at what Paul is doing

  144. and they think we've got to get a piece of this action.

  145. But the name of Jesus is not some talisman for these people.

  146. It's gone, pear-shaped.

  147. Verse 16, you have this extraordinary incident.

  148. The evil spirit answered them,

  149. Jesus I know, Paul I recognize, but who are you?

  150. And the man in whom was the evil spirit leapt on them,

  151. mastered all of them, overpowered them.

  152. So they fled out the house naked and wounded.

  153. But God is at work even in this, isn't he?

  154. People of Ephesus, as a result of this,

  155. came to realize that what Paul was doing was not magic.

  156. He really did have the power of God.

  157. Listen to what verse 17 says.

  158. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,

  159. they were all seized with fear.

  160. And the name of the Lord Jesus was held high in honor.

  161. But if you read on, people weren't just awed,

  162. they were also repentant.

  163. Verse 18 and 19 tells us that they came and they confessed to what they'd done.

  164. They confessed their sin.

  165. Sorcerers, these magic men,

  166. came and publicly burnt their sorcerer's scrolls

  167. at huge personal cost, we're told.

  168. People were turning from darkness to light,

  169. from the occult to the gospel,

  170. turning from their sins in repentance to the Lord.

  171. And Paul summarizes it, doesn't he, in verse 20,

  172. the word of the Lord, we've seen it before,

  173. spread widely, grew in power.

  174. The last section, verses 23 to 41, is the big uproar.

  175. The big uproar.

  176. A big uproar was caused by the ministry of the gospel in Ephesus.

  177. Verse 23 calls it

  178. a great disturbance.

  179. No little disturbance.

  180. It starts with a guy called Demetrius, he's a silversmith.

  181. And he stirs up his fellow silversmiths in Ephesus,

  182. all of whom made a lot of money

  183. out of creating shrines to the local goddess of the time, Artemis.

  184. And these guys have a bit of an economic problem,

  185. because as people hear the gospel of the Lord Jesus,

  186. they're starting to repent and turn away from their idolatry.

  187. And as a result, there's less work for these guys to do,

  188. and there's less trade for these guys to sell.

  189. And the Artemis idol industry is suffering.

  190. They can see their monthly bank balances getting smaller,

  191. and the Christian church across the road getting bigger.

  192. And when Demetrius tries to convince the other silversmiths

  193. to do something about it,

  194. he doesn't make it sound like his motive is money, does he?

  195. He makes it sound that he's very concerned for the goddess Artemis,

  196. and her worship.

  197. Listen to what he says in verse 27.

  198. And there is a danger that not only this trade of ours

  199. may come into disrepute,

  200. but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis

  201. may be counted as nothing,

  202. and she may even be deposed from her magnificence,

  203. she whom all Asia and the world worship.

  204. The little speech is very effective.

  205. All the tradesmen that have got together to listen,

  206. and Demetrius,

  207. they are roused by this speech,

  208. and they start shouting,

  209. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!

  210. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!

  211. And before you know it,

  212. the whole city is up in arms.

  213. There's an angry mob.

  214. And they're looking for a scapegoat,

  215. and so they lay their hands on a couple of Paul's colleagues,

  216. Gaius and Aristarchus,

  217. and they take them to the theatre.

  218. Paul wants to go and speak in their defence,

  219. but his friends talk him out of the commotion.

  220. And so verse 32,

  221. most of the crowd are in such an uproar,

  222. they don't even know why they're there.

  223. They're just swept up in the moment.

  224. A Jewish man, Alexander, at that point,

  225. stands up,

  226. and he speaks to the crowd,

  227. but he's shouted down,

  228. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!

  229. Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!

  230. Well, in the end,

  231. the authorities get wind of it,

  232. the city clerk turns up,

  233. and he manages to settle the whole thing down.

  234. And he urges the people,

  235. don't get so worked up.

  236. As if the great god Artemis

  237. needs you to defend her.

  238. He reminds the crowd that Gaius and Aristarchus,

  239. they're not guilty of any crime.

  240. And he says that if Demetrius and his mates

  241. want to make a complaint,

  242. go to the courts,

  243. and he sends them all home.

  244. I guess it's a little reminder to you and I,

  245. that God sometimes will use

  246. secular officials to provide justice

  247. and to protect his people

  248. as they speak about his word.

  249. It won't always be like that,

  250. but sometimes it will be like that, isn't it?

  251. That's what we're praying

  252. with the Assisted Suicide Bill,

  253. that even those who don't want anything

  254. to do with the gospel,

  255. that God would cause them to vote

  256. to protect life.

  257. Well, that's a quick summary of Acts 19.

  258. At least from one side of the story.

  259. It's what Paul and his colleagues are doing

  260. and how people are responding to them.

  261. But what I want to do now is to look at the other side of the story

  262. in Acts 19,

  263. the story of God's work.

  264. Four observations.

  265. One from each of the sections.

  266. Number one,

  267. the necessary spirit of God.

  268. It's the most obvious observation of all

  269. to make in Paul's interactions

  270. with the disciples of John.

  271. In verses 1 to 7,

  272. Paul believed that they must have the Holy Spirit.

  273. Paul was not content to leave them as they were.

  274. He thought it was imperative

  275. that they know more about Jesus

  276. and they receive his spirit.

  277. So much so that he baptized them again.

  278. And that reminds you and I

  279. that the spirit of God

  280. is absolutely necessary

  281. for the Christian life.

  282. If you want to know

  283. and follow Jesus,

  284. the receiving of the spirit

  285. is not a secondary matter.

  286. It is essential.

  287. The Holy Spirit is not

  288. an optional extra.

  289. we need the Holy Spirit

  290. to help us to see

  291. who Jesus really is.

  292. We need the Holy Spirit

  293. to help us to grow

  294. in the likeness of the Lord Jesus.

  295. We need the Holy Spirit

  296. to enable us to serve Jesus.

  297. And it is for those reasons

  298. that the New Testament

  299. talks often about the Holy Spirit

  300. and what he does in the life of the Christian

  301. and what he does in

  302. the Christian church.

  303. We need the Holy Spirit

  304. like we need the Lord Jesus.

  305. We depend on him

  306. like we depend upon God

  307. our Father in heaven.

  308. And it ought to be

  309. a source of great rejoicing

  310. for people like us

  311. in the fact that God

  312. gives his Holy Spirit

  313. to people so generously.

  314. And what we see here

  315. calls for gratitude.

  316. And this is what God does

  317. all the time, isn't it?

  318. He knows what we need

  319. before ourselves.

  320. And he supplies what we need

  321. with generous grace.

  322. And that is definitely true

  323. when it comes to the Holy Spirit.

  324. If you are a Christian this morning

  325. if you are a follower

  326. of the Lord Jesus

  327. then the Bible says

  328. that you have

  329. God's Holy Spirit

  330. living inside you.

  331. What does he do?

  332. He assures you

  333. of God's love for you.

  334. He points you

  335. to our future in heaven.

  336. He teaches you

  337. about the Lord Jesus.

  338. He shows you your need.

  339. He grows you

  340. in the character

  341. of the Lord Jesus.

  342. He brings about

  343. the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  344. Love, joy, peace,

  345. patience, kindness,

  346. goodness, faithfulness,

  347. gentleness,

  348. self-control.

  349. The Holy Spirit

  350. has given you gifts

  351. that you might build up

  352. the body of Jesus

  353. as you serve.

  354. And God has given us

  355. all of that

  356. by giving us himself

  357. his spirit.

  358. And we ought to be

  359. very, very grateful.

  360. The second thing we see

  361. about God's story

  362. in this passage

  363. is the irrepressible

  364. word of God.

  365. The unstoppable

  366. word of God.

  367. That's the section,

  368. second section, isn't it?

  369. Paul is preaching

  370. in the synagogue,

  371. in the lecture hall,

  372. and there's great obstinance,

  373. great stubbornness

  374. on the part of his hearers.

  375. But the word goes out

  376. so much that we read

  377. in verse 10

  378. that all the residents

  379. of Asia

  380. heard the word of the Lord,

  381. both Jews and Greeks.

  382. And that is astounding.

  383. And not only that,

  384. in the next section,

  385. there are people out there

  386. trying to muscle in

  387. on Paul's gig.

  388. Trying to reproduce

  389. his miracles

  390. only to discover

  391. that Jesus is not

  392. a genie in a lamp.

  393. Jesus is not at the disposal

  394. of anyone

  395. who just uses his name.

  396. But even that incident

  397. causes people

  398. to fear

  399. God

  400. and to honour

  401. Christ's name.

  402. People repent

  403. of their sins

  404. and that familiar phrase

  405. that we read

  406. in Acts 6,

  407. do you remember it?

  408. The word of the Lord

  409. spread widely

  410. and grew in power.

  411. And if only that

  412. were true

  413. in our day,

  414. in our city,

  415. if only people

  416. in Ealing

  417. and the surrounding area

  418. would hold

  419. the name of Jesus

  420. in high honour,

  421. as verse 17 says,

  422. if only

  423. the Lord's word

  424. would spread

  425. and grow in power,

  426. as verse 20 says,

  427. if only

  428. everyone

  429. who lived in Ealing

  430. might hear

  431. the word of the Lord,

  432. verse 10.

  433. And I trust

  434. that,

  435. like me,

  436. you are praying

  437. for those things.

  438. You are asking God

  439. to make them happen

  440. on your street.

  441. And of course,

  442. we can have

  443. very real confidence,

  444. can't we,

  445. that this is a prayer

  446. that God wants to answer.

  447. Because the word of God

  448. is irrepressible.

  449. opposition

  450. cannot hold it back.

  451. Imposters

  452. cannot knock it

  453. off course.

  454. Circumstances

  455. cannot derail it.

  456. It's one of the

  457. great themes

  458. in the book of Acts,

  459. isn't it?

  460. God's word

  461. is uncontainable.

  462. You cannot stop it

  463. no matter what you do.

  464. God's work

  465. does its work.

  466. And as we talked

  467. about last week,

  468. I think the book of Acts

  469. has been written

  470. for us as a church

  471. to grow expectancy

  472. in our hearts.

  473. To make us

  474. confident of this.

  475. I don't know about you

  476. but I don't know

  477. who you're thinking

  478. of inviting

  479. to Hope Explored.

  480. There's two neighbours

  481. who live over the road.

  482. I have great fun

  483. with them

  484. and I'm terrified

  485. of asking them.

  486. I was speaking

  487. this week

  488. and I nearly

  489. asked them

  490. and I didn't.

  491. I bottled it.

  492. But the book of Acts,

  493. isn't it,

  494. it must give us

  495. confidence

  496. as we think

  497. of the people

  498. that we want

  499. to come and hear

  500. the gospel

  501. that the word

  502. of God

  503. is unstoppable,

  504. uncontainable.

  505. Of course,

  506. there will be days

  507. when there will be

  508. opposition,

  509. there will be neighbours

  510. that say no to us.

  511. And there are times

  512. when opposition

  513. to the gospel

  514. seems very great

  515. and it looks like

  516. nobody wants to listen.

  517. But there will be days,

  518. there are days,

  519. when people hear

  520. the gospel

  521. and respond with joy.

  522. When they welcome

  523. God's message.

  524. When they say to us,

  525. I'd love to come,

  526. I'd love to hear.

  527. And they repent

  528. of their sins

  529. because God's word

  530. is powerful to do that.

  531. Do you believe that?

  532. Because God's word

  533. is powerful to do that.

  534. Do you believe that?

  535. Very enthusiastic.

  536. And we ought to trust

  537. him confidently

  538. to do it.

  539. Number three,

  540. the transforming

  541. power of God.

  542. That's the thing

  543. we see in the third section,

  544. isn't it?

  545. We saw how God's word

  546. changes people's lives.

  547. We see how it

  548. draws them

  549. into costly repentance,

  550. costly turning away

  551. from their sin

  552. and their idolatry

  553. and walking towards God.

  554. And in that moment

  555. of repentance,

  556. the Ephesians,

  557. the Ephesian believers,

  558. they set an example

  559. for you and I,

  560. for all who would

  561. come after us.

  562. So,

  563. for me

  564. and for you,

  565. one of the implications

  566. of this chapter

  567. is to ask ourselves

  568. some pretty hard questions

  569. about repentance.

  570. Is God's word

  571. transforming our lives

  572. like it did here?

  573. Or are we

  574. resistant to it?

  575. And I guess

  576. that is one of the

  577. most striking things,

  578. isn't it,

  579. about the repentance

  580. of these Ephesian

  581. sorcerers.

  582. Verse 19,

  583. they are willing

  584. to give up something

  585. that was very,

  586. very valuable

  587. to them

  588. because they saw

  589. that Jesus

  590. is worth

  591. far more

  592. than what they

  593. previously valued.

  594. And so they were

  595. willing to give up

  596. their sin.

  597. If you're here

  598. this morning

  599. and you're somebody

  600. that wouldn't

  601. describe themselves

  602. as a Christian

  603. or you're not sure

  604. that you are,

  605. I think this raises

  606. a fundamental question.

  607. Could it be

  608. that the very thing

  609. that is stopping you

  610. from becoming

  611. a Christian,

  612. living for the Lord

  613. Jesus,

  614. is deep down

  615. you know

  616. that you would

  617. have to give up

  618. some things?

  619. Probably one thing.

  620. Maybe you're

  621. a young person

  622. here and

  623. you've been taught

  624. the truth of the

  625. gospel,

  626. you've been taught

  627. to know and love

  628. the Lord Jesus,

  629. you can never

  630. remember a time

  631. when you weren't

  632. prayed for,

  633. you can never

  634. remember a time

  635. when your mum

  636. and dad didn't

  637. tell you

  638. about the Lord

  639. Jesus.

  640. But there's

  641. something stopping

  642. you following

  643. him.

  644. And there's

  645. something stopping

  646. you living for

  647. him.

  648. And do you

  649. know what it

  650. is?

  651. Let me tell you

  652. what it is.

  653. it is that

  654. deep down

  655. you know

  656. that you

  657. would have

  658. to give

  659. up something.

  660. Maybe it's

  661. some secrets

  662. and maybe

  663. it's not that.

  664. Maybe it's

  665. being in the

  666. in crowd.

  667. Maybe it's

  668. one of those

  669. kind of things.

  670. But you're

  671. hanging on to

  672. it and you

  673. will not

  674. give it up.

  675. And the

  676. Ephesians

  677. tell us,

  678. they tell you

  679. this,

  680. give it up,

  681. it's worth

  682. it.

  683. It is so,

  684. so worth

  685. it.

  686. Give it up

  687. for Jesus.

  688. They would

  689. say what

  690. you gain

  691. in Jesus

  692. is infinitely

  693. more than

  694. 60,000 pieces

  695. of silver

  696. or however

  697. many it

  698. is.

  699. Jesus is

  700. far,

  701. far more

  702. worthy.

  703. Will you

  704. turn away

  705. from your

  706. sins and

  707. start living

  708. for Jesus?

  709. Of course

  710. you might

  711. say,

  712. well,

  713. I need

  714. to know

  715. more,

  716. I'm not

  717. ready to

  718. make that

  719. decision.

  720. Well,

  721. come to

  722. Hope

  723. Explored.

  724. Come again

  725. to it,

  726. sign up to

  727. it,

  728. talk to

  729. someone

  730. about it

  731. after the

  732. service.

  733. But Acts

  734. 19 also

  735. raises

  736. questions,

  737. doesn't it,

  738. for those

  739. of us who

  740. already are

  741. Christians.

  742. Because

  743. repentance

  744. is not

  745. just how

  746. the Christian

  747. life begins,

  748. is it?

  749. It's how

  750. the Christian

  751. life continues.

  752. And being

  753. honest with

  754. ourselves and

  755. with God

  756. about our

  757. failures,

  758. and honest

  759. with others

  760. and confessing

  761. our sin and

  762. turning away

  763. from them,

  764. it's costly.

  765. Repentance

  766. is still

  767. costly for

  768. the Christian,

  769. isn't it?

  770. It may be

  771. this morning

  772. that you've

  773. been a

  774. Christian for

  775. many years,

  776. and it's

  777. still possible

  778. for you to

  779. find yourself

  780. in a situation

  781. a bit like

  782. these Ephesian

  783. sorcerers,

  784. that you're

  785. doing something

  786. that you know

  787. is not

  788. right.

  789. And as you

  790. think about it

  791. now,

  792. you feel the

  793. heat of it

  794. and your

  795. conscience

  796. burns within

  797. you.

  798. And to

  799. repent of

  800. it would be

  801. very embarrassing

  802. perhaps and

  803. confronting,

  804. but these

  805. verses ask

  806. us whether

  807. we're ready

  808. to do

  809. that.

  810. and they

  811. ask us to

  812. see Christ

  813. clearly,

  814. to see

  815. who Jesus

  816. is clearly

  817. and so also

  818. to see that

  819. what we're

  820. hanging on

  821. to is

  822. actually not

  823. very much

  824. at all

  825. compared to

  826. Jesus,

  827. compared to

  828. Jesus and

  829. the forgiveness

  830. that he

  831. offers.

  832. And Acts

  833. 19 provokes

  834. you and I

  835. to think

  836. hard this

  837. morning about

  838. where we see

  839. the transforming

  840. power of God

  841. in our lives.

  842. And are there

  843. things this

  844. morning we've

  845. just got to

  846. let go of?

  847. The final

  848. thing from

  849. God's side

  850. of the story

  851. is this

  852. passage invites

  853. us to see

  854. something about

  855. the divine

  856. majesty of

  857. God.

  858. The divine

  859. majesty of

  860. God.

  861. I choose

  862. that phrase

  863. carefully because

  864. it's used

  865. in the

  866. passage,

  867. but you'll

  868. have noticed

  869. it was used

  870. about Artemis,

  871. the false

  872. God.

  873. Verse 27,

  874. Demetrius expresses

  875. this anxiety

  876. that he feels

  877. if more and

  878. more people

  879. turn to

  880. Jesus,

  881. then their

  882. goddess is

  883. going to be

  884. robbed of

  885. her divine

  886. majesty.

  887. And we may

  888. wonder,

  889. mightn't we,

  890. whether a

  891. God who can

  892. be robbed of

  893. her divine

  894. majesty is

  895. actually very

  896. majestic at all,

  897. or very

  898. divine.

  899. And then you

  900. see the crowds

  901. chanting,

  902. great is

  903. Artemis of

  904. the Ephesians,

  905. great is

  906. Artemis of

  907. the Ephesians.

  908. And it's

  909. hard not to

  910. think,

  911. isn't it,

  912. they're

  913. trying to

  914. talk

  915. themselves

  916. into it.

  917. Don't

  918. misunderstand me,

  919. the one

  920. true God

  921. doesn't need

  922. anyone to

  923. protect him.

  924. God's

  925. divinity and

  926. his majesty

  927. can never be

  928. stolen from

  929. him.

  930. You cannot

  931. rob God of

  932. that.

  933. He doesn't

  934. need people

  935. to declare

  936. his greatness

  937. in order to

  938. be great.

  939. God has

  940. demonstrated

  941. his unique

  942. power and

  943. wisdom in

  944. the world

  945. and in

  946. human history

  947. from the

  948. very beginning

  949. until now,

  950. supremely in

  951. the death

  952. and resurrection

  953. of his

  954. son,

  955. the Lord

  956. Jesus.

  957. And those

  958. who worship

  959. God,

  960. we do not

  961. need to

  962. whip ourselves

  963. up into

  964. a frenzy,

  965. do we?

  966. Because we

  967. have a

  968. settled and

  969. a quiet

  970. assurance in

  971. our hearts

  972. that God

  973. is who

  974. he says

  975. he is.

  976. And that

  977. Jesus,

  978. God's

  979. son,

  980. is to

  981. be held

  982. high in

  983. honor.

  984. God's

  985. God.

  986. The people

  987. here in

  988. Acts 19

  989. are desperate

  990. to shore

  991. up Artemis'

  992. image and

  993. future.

  994. And while

  995. many in

  996. Ephesus are

  997. chanting

  998. Artemis'

  999. name,

  1000. great is

  1001. Artemis

  1002. the Ephesians,

  1003. the one

  1004. true God

  1005. goes about

  1006. his work

  1007. really quietly,

  1008. making his

  1009. word known

  1010. by his

  1011. spirit,

  1012. transforming

  1013. his people's

  1014. lives.

  1015. love

  1016. and he

  1017. is the

  1018. one we

  1019. worship

  1020. and the

  1021. only one

  1022. who deserves

  1023. to be

  1024. worshipped.

  1025. And so

  1026. once again,

  1027. can I make

  1028. sure this

  1029. morning that

  1030. you see

  1031. that?

  1032. you see the

  1033. divine majesty

  1034. of God.

  1035. And I want

  1036. to encourage

  1037. you to keep

  1038. worshipping him

  1039. today,

  1040. now and

  1041. always.

  1042. Grateful for

  1043. his spirit who

  1044. is with you,

  1045. confident in

  1046. his irrepressible

  1047. word that

  1048. cannot be

  1049. stopped,

  1050. and continually

  1051. repentant

  1052. because of

  1053. his power.

  1054. May the

  1055. story of

  1056. God's work

  1057. in Ephesus

  1058. be the

  1059. story of

  1060. his work

  1061. here in

  1062. us and

  1063. amongst us

  1064. that we

  1065. may know

  1066. as a

  1067. church the

  1068. word of

  1069. the Lord

  1070. spreading

  1071. and growing

  1072. in power

  1073. to the

  1074. high honour

  1075. of Jesus.

  1076. Amen.

  1077. Let's pray.
