  1. And one of the things I'm looking forward to in heaven is I want to meet the people who divided the Bible into chapters.

  2. ! I want to ask what on earth were they thinking?

  3. !

  4. These events took place. You can go to the place where these events happened. Acts 22 took place in the year 57.

  5. And we're not dealing with fairy stories. This isn't Rapunzel. It's not Shrek. It's not Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It's not Toy Story.

  6. These are historic events that took place on God's earth.

  7. And we're going to look at chapter 22. And over the next few weeks we're going to see that what Luke does in the writing of Acts is he shows us Paul speaking for himself.

  8. And tonight Paul speaks in front of a murderous mob.

  9. And next week Paul will speak in front of a Jewish council, a Supreme Jewish council in the fortress of Antonia.

  10. Next to the temple in Jerusalem. And then Paul will speak to Felix.

  11. And then before Festus. And at last he'll speak before Agrippa.

  12. Our people have just come and grabbed Paul in the temple with a view to killing him.

  13. So of course you don't kill people in temples.

  14. So do you notice what they did? They shut the doors.

  15. They dragged him out and then they shut the doors.

  16. They thought that he had brought into the holy precincts of the temple Gentiles.

  17. It's untrue of course.

  18. But they're out to kill him.

  19. And they're in the act of killing him when the Roman garrison intervenes.

  20. And the force of the mob is so great.

  21. The soldiers, you remember, they carry him above their heads.

  22. So he's out of the reach of the mob.

  23. He's put down. He stands on his feet.

  24. And he says to the commander, 21 verse 37, can I speak to you?

  25. And of course this Roman commander is astonished because Paul speaks in perfect Greek.

  26. The man who's intervened, he thought, I thought he was some Egyptian kind of insurrectionist, a revolutionary.

  27. Who seems to be very well known.

  28. And he did last come to the surface.

  29. We thought you were the man we'd been hunting for.

  30. And that the Jews were in the act of killing him.

  31. But the fact that this man speaks to him in perfect educated Greek leaves him speechless.

  32. Can you speak Greek?

  33. Aren't you the Egyptian that we arrested, we were looking for a few times ago?

  34. And Paul says, doesn't he, I am a Jew.

  35. That must have fascinated him straight away.

  36. If he was a Jew, what on earth was all the fuss about?

  37. Why were the Jewish people trying to kill you if you are a Jew?

  38. I am a Jew from Tarsus and Cilicia.

  39. It's fascinating, isn't it, that Paul describes himself in that way.

  40. I'm from Tarsus and Cilicia.

  41. It's a city, it's no mean city.

  42. And I implore you, permit me to speak to the people.

  43. People who doubt the Bible say, well this is an evidence, isn't it, that surely this is just a made up story.

  44. Surely the commander who's just stepped into this baying moor wouldn't let him speak.

  45. But stranger things have happened.

  46. And this is the Roman Empire, although it's Judea.

  47. And the Romans are in charge.

  48. And he doesn't know anything about this man.

  49. And if there are going to be charges against this guy, well he obviously doesn't know him.

  50. He's got to get some evidence, some facts.

  51. Besides, he's a little bit astonished, isn't he, that he is an educated man.

  52. To you that he is.

  53. It's all in the providence of God, of course.

  54. So he allows the man to speak.

  55. And we have one of those references, isn't it?

  56. If I was going to write a PhD, do you know what I would write?

  57. I would write it on Paul's hands.

  58. They seem to be everywhere.

  59. Paul's hands.

  60. Like I can't get why Luke keeps talking about his hands.

  61. So there he is in front of this great crowd.

  62. They're baying for his blood.

  63. He stands on this makeshift pulpit.

  64. And then we read he motions with his hands.

  65. I'd love to know what the motions were.

  66. I think they're this motion.

  67. I don't know.

  68. There's great silence.

  69. He speaks to them in the Hebrew language.

  70. He speaks Greek.

  71. He speaks Hebrew.

  72. Paul speaks to the murdering mob.

  73. And he tells his story.

  74. Do you have a story?

  75. Every single one of us has got a story to tell tonight, haven't we?

  76. What's your story?

  77. Paul tells his story.

  78. He says, this is what the Lord has done for me.

  79. I want you to see, first of all, the aim of his story.

  80. What is Paul aiming at?

  81. What is Paul trying to do is he stands on the steps and he waves his hands and he speaks in the Hebrew language.

  82. He waits for the crowd to go quiet.

  83. Why is he telling a story?

  84. If Paul is trying to defend himself, he's actually not doing a very good job.

  85. He doesn't make any references to the accusations that are against him.

  86. If he's giving his testimony to set the record straight, actually, he doesn't do a very good job of it.

  87. Because he actually speaks about God sending him to the Gentiles and that incenses the crowd.

  88. Who think that he's brought the Gentiles into the temple.

  89. That's why this all kicked off in the first place.

  90. And if he's trying to evangelize them and win them, his testimony is a bit strange.

  91. Because nowhere in Acts 22 does he appeal to them.

  92. Nowhere does he speak about repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

  93. So why is he telling the story?

  94. Try and get your head into this.

  95. What is Paul's aim?

  96. It seems to me that Paul's aim was to show the Jewish crowd in front of him and the Gentiles behind him

  97. that there is someone to reckon with.

  98. That there is someone who is above them, who is greater than all of them.

  99. And who is Lord of all.

  100. And there is somebody who is the Lord of the Jews.

  101. And there is somebody who is the Lord of the Gentiles.

  102. And there is someone who is the saviour of the Jews and the saviour of the Gentiles both.

  103. Paul's aim is to lift up Jesus Christ.

  104. To make him great in the eyes of the people.

  105. And to speak about the Lord Jesus in such a way that they would have great thoughts about him.

  106. Even if they don't come to submit themselves to him.

  107. He is standing on these steps to glorify Jesus Christ.

  108. It is the aim of any sermon, isn't it?

  109. It is the aim of any opportunity that you might have this week.

  110. It is to speak of Jesus Christ.

  111. Why might God give you that opportunity in your school, in your workplace, amongst your neighbours, at the school gate?

  112. Why might he do that?

  113. Well, so that you might lift up Jesus Christ.

  114. Paul was given this opportunity to show that Jesus Christ is Lord of all.

  115. And he is rich.

  116. He is generous.

  117. To all who call upon him.

  118. Whether you are a Jew or whether you are a Gentile.

  119. Let's look at the content, secondly.

  120. Three points in the content.

  121. Three points to the content.

  122. So look at verses 1 to 5.

  123. And his first point is really simple.

  124. It's this.

  125. Where you are now, I have been.

  126. Where you are now, he says to the crowd, I've been.

  127. It's more than that, but it is that.

  128. It's where you are now, I have been.

  129. Even more so.

  130. Amen.

  131. Men and brothers, fathers.

  132. Hear my defence.

  133. That I know make before you.

  134. When they heard that he was addressing them in Hebrew, they become even more quiet.

  135. And he said to them, I am a Jew.

  136. And why were they trying to kill him?

  137. They thought that he was an unfaithful Jew.

  138. He says, I'm a Jew who was born in Tarsus and I've been brought up in this city.

  139. The crowd is suddenly becoming more attentive.

  140. He says, I was educated at the feet of Gamaliel, the greatest Jewish teacher of the first century.

  141. And Paul had been his personal student.

  142. He had all the qualifications, all the credentials any Jew would have wanted.

  143. He says, I was taught according to a strict manner of the law of our fathers, verse 3.

  144. And I was jealous for God as you are today.

  145. Where you are, I once was.

  146. Where you are, I have been, but even more so.

  147. You are jealous for the law, I was more jealous.

  148. You are doing what you're doing for God.

  149. Well, what I was doing, I was doing for God.

  150. You're doing what you're doing because God's law had been insulted.

  151. Where you are, I have been.

  152. Verse 4, I persecuted the weight of the death.

  153. It's exactly what they were doing, isn't it?

  154. Remember this morning, they were binding, they were delivering to prison.

  155. They were wanting to kill.

  156. He says, I bound and I delivered to prison both men and women.

  157. Well, actually, what they were doing is they were trying to kill him.

  158. I wonder if in verse 5 he spots a high priest in the crowd.

  159. And then as he glances, he spots the elders.

  160. And he says, as the high priest and the whole council of the elders can bear me witness from them,

  161. I receive letters.

  162. They know who I am.

  163. And I journeyed towards Damascus and to take those who were there

  164. and bring them in chains to Jerusalem to be imprisoned.

  165. It really is, isn't it, a wonderful thing to be a Christian.

  166. When the atheist comes to say to you, and you're speaking with the atheist,

  167. and they say, well, I just have times where I don't believe in God.

  168. We can say, can't we?

  169. I've had those thoughts myself.

  170. When people say, I don't believe the word of God.

  171. I don't believe the Bible is the word of God.

  172. We're able to say, well, I've struggled with that.

  173. When people say, it's just a fairy tale,

  174. we can say, there have been times in my life when I've thought that.

  175. All Christians can say to those who are not Christians,

  176. I've been where you've been.

  177. The non-Christian cannot say to the Christian,

  178. I've been where you have been, where you are.

  179. We've been where they are, haven't we?

  180. We've been in unbelief.

  181. We've been in error.

  182. We've been stubborn.

  183. People who sit in sermons,

  184. I'm deliberately trying to think of anything to distract them.

  185. In the church I grew up in,

  186. there was a beautiful pipe organ behind the pulpit.

  187. It had 46 pipes.

  188. In the middle column, in the fourth pipe along,

  189. there was a kink in one of the pipes.

  190. I would study how many pipes there were,

  191. how many it would be until I got to that kink, that one there.

  192. Maybe you're here now, and you're in this sermon,

  193. and you are desperately trying hard to think about something else.

  194. Do you know those feelings in a sermon where your conscience pricks you,

  195. and you'll do anything but to think of what's being said?

  196. Where you are, we've been.

  197. Where you are, I've been.

  198. Second point is, and the Lord Jesus intervened in the content.

  199. Look at verse 6, now it happened.

  200. He was in unbelief.

  201. He was stubborn.

  202. Some of us were worse than the worst we've met.

  203. The Lord Jesus intervened and tells this story.

  204. Verse 6, his conversion is sudden.

  205. It is visible.

  206. It is dramatic.

  207. It is audible.

  208. It is witnessed.

  209. Let me really be clear here.

  210. Not all conversions are like that.

  211. In all likelihood, your conversion isn't like that.

  212. If you are a covenant child who's been brought up in the Christian faith,

  213. it's unlikely that your conversion is like that.

  214. But nonetheless, in every person who's trusting in the Lord Jesus,

  215. we can say that there was a moment when the Lord Jesus intervened.

  216. Paul says, I fell to the ground.

  217. I heard a voice I'd not heard before.

  218. What did the voice say?

  219. Saul, Saul.

  220. Why does he hear the voice say, Saul, Saul?

  221. Well, we know, don't we?

  222. Because the Lord Jesus Christ knows his sheep by name.

  223. I've never heard in a sermon, Paul, Paul.

  224. I've never heard that.

  225. Paul Levy.

  226. Paul Levy.

  227. I've never heard that.

  228. But I've heard a voice speaking right to me, my conscience.

  229. For all of us who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  230. there was a time when the message that came generally

  231. came to me particularly.

  232. There is a time for every Christian

  233. where the message that went out to everybody

  234. comes to you individually.

  235. Personally.

  236. There was a time when the message,

  237. which seemed so blunt,

  238. became sharp.

  239. Why are you persecuting me?

  240. So I answered.

  241. Can you see the strangeness

  242. of how he answers?

  243. What does he answer?

  244. Who are you, Lord?

  245. Lord?

  246. Who are you, Lord?

  247. When that great call comes from God,

  248. our consciences know very well who's speaking.

  249. Your conscience tonight knows who's speaking to you.

  250. It's the most terrible thing, isn't it,

  251. when we know that Jesus Christ is speaking to us

  252. and we remain stubborn and hard-hearted

  253. and we deliberately refuse to listen.

  254. Paul knew who was speaking.

  255. Who are you, Lord?

  256. Such a funny question.

  257. Why did he call him Lord

  258. if he didn't know who he was?

  259. It's because he did know who he was.

  260. He asked, who are you, Lord?

  261. It was because he did know who he was

  262. that he asked, who are you, Lord?

  263. I am Jesus of Nazareth,

  264. whom you are persecuting.

  265. Tells us those who were with me,

  266. they saw the light,

  267. but they did not understand the voice

  268. of the one who was speaking to me.

  269. It's often the case.

  270. People who sit side by side,

  271. they hear the same sermon,

  272. one is converted, the other one isn't.

  273. They go to the same Hope Explored course,

  274. they sit next to each other,

  275. they hear the same great talk,

  276. they engage in the same discussion,

  277. one is converted, one isn't.

  278. They sit in the same Sunday school class

  279. and one believes and one refuses to believe.

  280. Maybe tonight as you hear God's word,

  281. God is speaking to you

  282. and doing his work in you,

  283. but the person next to you,

  284. he's not doing his work in.

  285. They're hearing something,

  286. but they're not having dealings

  287. with the living God.

  288. A Christ who's intervening,

  289. what should I do, Lord?

  290. His heart is being changed, isn't it?

  291. That's the last thing he would have said

  292. a few moments ago,

  293. to say to Jesus of Nazareth,

  294. Lord, and then to say to him,

  295. what shall I do, Lord?

  296. To call him Lord suggests

  297. that he is God,

  298. it is God's name,

  299. and to say,

  300. what shall I do, Lord,

  301. it suggests submission.

  302. There's a desire there,

  303. his heart's being changed.

  304. That I am not going to go the way

  305. of trying to murder Christians,

  306. but I'm going to go your way now,

  307. from now on.

  308. He's been converted by Jesus Christ.

  309. Look at verse 10.

  310. He tells us,

  311. listen to him in verse 10,

  312. what shall I do, Lord?

  313. And the Lord said to me,

  314. rise and go into Damascus,

  315. and there you will be told

  316. all that is appointed for you to do.

  317. And since I could not see

  318. because of the brightness of that light,

  319. I was led by the hand of those

  320. who were with me,

  321. and I came into Damascus.

  322. There I met one Ananias,

  323. a devout man,

  324. according to the law,

  325. well spoken of all by the Jews

  326. who lived there,

  327. came to me and standing by me,

  328. said to me,

  329. brother,

  330. receive your sight.

  331. He was told that God the Father

  332. had chosen him.

  333. Again,

  334. what have we seen in Acts?

  335. I think we have seen this choosing

  336. again and again and again

  337. of God in eternity

  338. that is played out in time.

  339. If God the Father had not chosen him,

  340. he would never have been converted.

  341. And he wasn't just seeing Ananias' face,

  342. he was seeing the just one.

  343. He saw the Lord Jesus by faith,

  344. he's hearing the voice of his mouth,

  345. he's in fellowship with Jesus Christ,

  346. Jesus intervened,

  347. and then he's baptised.

  348. His sins are forgiven,

  349. he calls on the name of the Lord,

  350. Jesus Christ intervenes.

  351. That's the content.

  352. Where you were,

  353. I once was.

  354. Where you are,

  355. I once was.

  356. Jesus intervenes.

  357. The third part of his gospel

  358. is that it is,

  359. and again,

  360. this pattern of acts

  361. to the Jew first

  362. and also to the Gentile.

  363. Paul begins his speech

  364. and says,

  365. I am a Jew.

  366. They needed to know that.

  367. When he talks about Ananias

  368. in verse 12,

  369. he says,

  370. as a devout man,

  371. according to the law,

  372. he was a Jewish person.

  373. All the early Christians

  374. were Jewish.

  375. And now he mentions something

  376. that's not mentioned anywhere

  377. in the Bible

  378. from verse 17 on.

  379. Not long after his conversion,

  380. it's about three years,

  381. sometimes after his conversion,

  382. he's in Jerusalem.

  383. And this converted Jew,

  384. where was he?

  385. In the very temple

  386. from which he'd been kicked out.

  387. And what was happening,

  388. Paul is in the temple,

  389. verse 17,

  390. he was praying

  391. and he was in a trance.

  392. I don't know what

  393. really that means.

  394. I don't know what kind

  395. of spiritual experience

  396. that is.

  397. He certainly

  398. doesn't say

  399. anywhere in the Bible

  400. that we need to have

  401. that experience.

  402. And once more,

  403. God is dealing with him,

  404. isn't he,

  405. as a converted man.

  406. Make haste,

  407. get out of the temple,

  408. because they,

  409. that is the Jewish people,

  410. will not receive

  411. your testimony

  412. concerning me.

  413. And he has the audacity

  414. to argue with God.

  415. Lord,

  416. they themselves know

  417. that in one synagogue

  418. after another,

  419. I imprisoned them,

  420. beat those who believed in you.

  421. And when the blood of Stephen,

  422. your witness,

  423. was being shed,

  424. I myself was standing by

  425. and approving

  426. and watching over the garments

  427. of those who killed him.

  428. Lord,

  429. they know what I used to be.

  430. And he said to them,

  431. go,

  432. for I will send you

  433. far away to the Gentiles.

  434. The point has been made.

  435. Those early believers

  436. were Jewish.

  437. Stephen the martyr

  438. was Jewish.

  439. Christian church

  440. was born in Jerusalem.

  441. The message is

  442. for Jewish people.

  443. But it doesn't stop there.

  444. He was traveling

  445. with the Jews

  446. to Damascus

  447. to arrest Jews

  448. who would dare believe.

  449. But now the Lord

  450. has intervened

  451. and has saved him

  452. and is sending him

  453. to the Gentiles.

  454. The Lord of salvation

  455. to the Jews

  456. is the Lord of salvation

  457. to the Gentiles.

  458. The pattern,

  459. it seems to me,

  460. of the New Testament

  461. is to the Jew first

  462. and then to the Gentile.

  463. That hasn't changed.

  464. We need to think

  465. in London,

  466. how does that apply?

  467. How do we take

  468. the gospel

  469. to Jewish people?

  470. They have the promises.

  471. They have the covenant.

  472. The Messiah is theirs.

  473. There's a veil

  474. over their eyes.

  475. Of all people,

  476. they are the most privileged

  477. and yet they refuse to see

  478. and we have their Messiah.

  479. And he's the saviour

  480. of the Jewish people

  481. and he's the saviour

  482. of the Gentiles.

  483. There is no other saviour

  484. for the Jews.

  485. There is no other saviour

  486. for the Gentiles.

  487. It is Jesus Christ

  488. and all must hear

  489. this message too.

  490. The same Lord

  491. is rich to all

  492. who call upon him

  493. whether they are Jews

  494. or Gentiles.

  495. Three points.

  496. Where you are,

  497. I once was,

  498. the Lord Jesus Christ

  499. has intervened

  500. and this message

  501. of this Lord

  502. is to the Jew first

  503. and then to the Gentiles.

  504. Let's look at the manner,

  505. the aim,

  506. the content

  507. and the manner.

  508. Did Paul hide the truth

  509. that was unacceptable

  510. to his hearers?

  511. Did he?

  512. No.

  513. He knows, doesn't he,

  514. that the moment

  515. that he mentions

  516. the word Gentiles,

  517. the riot will start again

  518. and it did.

  519. Certain things that we say

  520. will be offensive.

  521. They will be offensive

  522. to the people

  523. that we speak to.

  524. Our job as Christians

  525. is not to go through

  526. life offending people

  527. and we are not

  528. to deliberately

  529. offend people.

  530. But there are things

  531. in our message

  532. which are offensive

  533. that are never

  534. to be hidden.

  535. And if you hide them,

  536. you are not preaching

  537. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  538. Paul knew that

  539. the same saviour

  540. saves the Gentiles

  541. in the same way

  542. by the same work

  543. that he saves the Jews.

  544. And a Jewish preacher

  545. is commanded

  546. to preach the gospel

  547. to the Gentiles

  548. and he knew

  549. that would make them

  550. furious

  551. but he didn't hide it.

  552. There are things

  553. that we have to tell people

  554. don't we?

  555. That is God's truth

  556. and they will object to it

  557. but we tell them nonetheless.

  558. Did he use complicated words?

  559. No, he was simple.

  560. Did he practice his routine

  561. in front of a mirror

  562. like a performer,

  563. like an actor?

  564. No, he didn't.

  565. He's factual,

  566. he's serious,

  567. there's a sincerity,

  568. there's a simplicity

  569. about the way Paul preaches.

  570. He tells it as it is

  571. and as it was

  572. but there's a further point.

  573. By what sort of person?

  574. When the riot starts up again,

  575. what do they do?

  576. Verse 22,

  577. they listen to him.

  578. They listen to him

  579. up until this word.

  580. Which word?

  581. Up to this word

  582. they listen to him.

  583. Verse 22.

  584. He said to me,

  585. go for I will send you

  586. far away to the Gentiles.

  587. There's the word.

  588. Up to this word

  589. they listen to him.

  590. Then they raised their voices

  591. and said,

  592. away with such a fellow

  593. for he should not be allowed

  594. to live.

  595. They're so angry

  596. they tear their clothes

  597. throwing them up in the air,

  598. throwing dust in the air.

  599. The commander orders Paul

  600. to be brought back

  601. into the safety of the barracks.

  602. And it says there,

  603. doesn't it,

  604. he should be brought back

  605. into the safety of the barracks

  606. in order to be examined

  607. under scourging.

  608. If I was preaching

  609. to the first century congregation

  610. at this point

  611. there would be

  612. a sharp intake of breath.

  613. Everyone would grow silent.

  614. Because everyone would know

  615. what scourging was

  616. in the Roman Empire.

  617. There's a pillar

  618. or there's a table

  619. and on one side

  620. of the pillar

  621. or the table

  622. there are metal rings

  623. and on the other side

  624. of the table

  625. or the pillar

  626. there are metal rings.

  627. Someone's wrists

  628. were put into

  629. those kind of chains

  630. and their ankles

  631. put into the other.

  632. And so they cannot

  633. move their back.

  634. They're stretched

  635. over either a pillar

  636. or over a table

  637. and their back is bare.

  638. Here comes a centurion

  639. or a Roman officer

  640. with a little stick

  641. but attached

  642. to this little stick

  643. are cords.

  644. Little cords of cloth

  645. and the cords have

  646. things attached to them

  647. and those things are

  648. teeth,

  649. nails,

  650. bone,

  651. pieces of metal.

  652. And he would whip

  653. the person stretched

  654. out in front of him

  655. to get information

  656. out of him.

  657. After two or three strokes

  658. the back would be

  659. broken up

  660. like a piece of meat,

  661. bleeding flesh.

  662. It's a way of

  663. making people talk.

  664. Many people died

  665. under scourging.

  666. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  667. was scourged.

  668. And that's what

  669. Paul is facing.

  670. He's put over this pillar,

  671. he's tied down,

  672. he's about to be scourged.

  673. But listen to this,

  674. God does not call us

  675. to be a martyr

  676. if we don't have to be one.

  677. There's more to it than that.

  678. Paul is a Jew

  679. but he's also a Roman citizen.

  680. It is against the law

  681. of Rome

  682. to bind

  683. or to tie

  684. or to chain

  685. or to hang up

  686. any Roman citizen

  687. who is uncondemned.

  688. It was against the law

  689. of Rome

  690. and he was a Roman citizen.

  691. And if a military man

  692. took it upon himself

  693. to bind

  694. or scourge

  695. a Roman citizen

  696. which was forbidden,

  697. he might lose his life.

  698. His own life

  699. could be taken

  700. as a punishment

  701. for degrading

  702. a Roman citizen.

  703. That's how strict

  704. Roman law was.

  705. Look how Paul comes out

  706. at verse 25.

  707. But when they'd

  708. stretched him out

  709. for the whips,

  710. Paul said to the centurion

  711. who was standing by,

  712. is it lawful

  713. for you to flog

  714. a man who was a Roman citizen

  715. and uncondemned?

  716. When the centurion

  717. heard this,

  718. he absolutely panicked.

  719. He went to the tribune

  720. and said to him,

  721. what on earth

  722. are we about to do?

  723. For this man

  724. is a Roman citizen.

  725. Here comes the commander.

  726. He comes into the room.

  727. He says,

  728. are you a Roman?

  729. Yes.

  730. Again,

  731. it's a shock.

  732. Perfect Greek,

  733. perfect Hebrew.

  734. He's also a Roman.

  735. This rabble rouser,

  736. this man

  737. who's caused

  738. absolute carnage

  739. that day.

  740. I'd buy

  741. my Jewish,

  742. my Roman citizenship

  743. with large sums

  744. of money

  745. like people do today.

  746. I had to

  747. obtain that citizenship.

  748. I wonder how much

  749. you paid.

  750. Paul says,

  751. I was born a citizen

  752. of Rome.

  753. Paul's integrity

  754. here shines through,

  755. doesn't it?

  756. If he endured

  757. the scourging

  758. and he might have lived,

  759. just think of the credit

  760. that would have been his.

  761. He would have been

  762. a sort of martyr

  763. figure.

  764. This man could have

  765. potentially been executed

  766. for doing it.

  767. Here's the integrity

  768. of Paul shining through.

  769. this testimony,

  770. this story

  771. about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  772. The man who's saying

  773. to them,

  774. where you are,

  775. I once was.

  776. And then the Lord

  777. Jesus Christ intervened.

  778. This man is saying

  779. he is Lord of all

  780. and this gospel

  781. is for the Jew first

  782. and then for the world next.

  783. And this man

  784. who spoke factually,

  785. seriously,

  786. honestly,

  787. is a man of integrity.

  788. And that's what makes

  789. his testimony

  790. so sincere

  791. and so powerful.

  792. And so here we are,

  793. 2000 leaders.

  794. Do you have a story?

  795. Can you look the unbelieving

  796. crowd in the eye

  797. tomorrow morning

  798. and say,

  799. well,

  800. where you are,

  801. I once was.

  802. Can you stand up

  803. and say,

  804. the Lord Jesus Christ

  805. intervened?

  806. Do you honestly believe

  807. that the gospel

  808. is for the Jew first

  809. and for all the world?

  810. And when you speak

  811. of Jesus Christ,

  812. is the aim

  813. to lift him up

  814. instead of

  815. making yourself sound good

  816. or making yourself

  817. the answer?

  818. Let's pray.
