  1. Turn to Acts chapter 28.

    Acts 28 chapter mention

  2. And we come to the last in our series in Acts.

  3. We've been in it pretty much for a year.

  4. We started it at the start of last September.

  5. And so it is, isn't it?

  6. I always feel slightly emotional when you come to the end of a book like this.

  7. And I found preaching Acts very, very difficult.

  8. And yet it's been really good for me.

  9. And I hope you've found it the same.

  10. There's lots of material to get through, isn't there?

  11. How do you handle those big kind of narratives?

  12. And yet I wish in many ways I could kind of go back and start again.

  13. I know the book a bit better now.

  14. But we're not going to do that.

  15. We come to the end of Acts, but this isn't the end of Paul.

  16. We read nothing about the death and the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul.

  17. Many believe, and I think rightly, that Paul was released from this imprisonment about two years later.

  18. He was kind of released during the reign of Nero.

  19. You know, the emperor who fiddled while Rome burned.

  20. We'll never know for certain, but there's some compelling reasons, I think, for believing that he was released.

  21. And when he was released, I think that's the period where he wrote the pastoral letters of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus.

  22. Fits with that stage of his life.

  23. This period ends with him in Rome.

  24. That's the end of the book of Acts.

  25. It's deliberate.

  26. The book of Acts has been about the movement of the gospel.

  27. It's been about how the church of the risen and ascended Lord Jesus Christ is unstoppable.

  28. So do you remember where it started?

  29. It started in the Jewish capital, didn't it?

  30. In Jerusalem.

  31. And it ends with the capital of the Gentile world, Rome.

  32. It begins in Jerusalem.

  33. And it ends in Rome.

  34. Chapter 1, verse 8.

  35. Do you remember?

  36. That's really the content page of the book.

  37. Where the risen and ascended Christ says to the apostles,

  38. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria and the ends of the earth.

  39. And so the central statement, the key of Acts chapter 28, is in verse 14.

    Acts 28 chapter mention

  40. And Luke gives you the climax of the book.

  41. And so we came to Rome.

  42. It's the climax of all that God has been doing in the apostle Paul.

  43. There's four scenes in the chapter.

  44. Verses 1 and 10.

  45. Verses 1 to 10, you've got the three months that Paul and his companions spent in Malta.

  46. And there's a shipwreck there washed up on the shore.

  47. And after three months in Malta, after great hospitality, and verse 11, they set sail in a ship because they'd wintered on the island.

  48. Why did they stay there for so long?

  49. Well, three months.

  50. Bad weather for sailing.

  51. I expect they needed a bit of courage to get back out on the sea.

  52. But then they set out on their journey to Italy.

  53. Verses 11 to 16 is the second scene.

  54. It describes their journey to Rome.

  55. And it ends with the kind of party living in Rome.

  56. And Paul is under house arrest.

  57. He's allowed to live by himself.

  58. Verse 16, with a soldier to guard him.

  59. Scene 3 is verses 17 to 28.

  60. And it's an encounter once again with the Jewish leaders.

  61. Verse 17.

  62. After three days of arriving in Rome, he's called his breath.

  63. He calls together the local leaders of the Jews.

  64. And when they gathered, he said to them,

  65. Brothers, though I'd done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers,

  66. yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of Rome.

  67. And he goes on.

  68. He speaks to them until the end of verse 28.

  69. And then scene 4 is verses 29 to 31.

  70. For two years, Paul remains in Rome under house arrest.

  71. He lived at his own expense.

  72. And he welcomed all who came to him.

  73. Four sections.

  74. The experience on Malta.

  75. The journey to Rome.

  76. The encounter with the Jews in Rome.

  77. And two years living under house arrest.

  78. And he preaches and teaches Jesus Christ.

  79. And the book finishes, doesn't it, with that wonderful little phrase,

  80. with all boldness and without hindrance.

  81. Four sections.

  82. But I think there are two themes.

  83. The first theme, well both themes run right the way through this chapter.

  84. The first theme is the theme of God's faithfulness to Paul.

  85. And the second theme is Paul's faithfulness to God.

  86. The faithfulness of God.

  87. And the faithfulness of Paul.

  88. Let's see, the faithfulness of God to Paul.

  89. In our opening verses, you've got this experience,

  90. a continuing experience that Paul has had throughout the book of Acts.

  91. Paul has experienced, amidst all the troubles and all the persecutions

  92. and all the opposition and all the false accusations,

  93. the unchanging faithfulness of God to him.

  94. In so many ways.

  95. God had made so many promises to the apostle.

  96. And right the way through the account, God has been faithful to his promises.

  97. He's faithfully looked after the apostle Paul.

  98. He's provided for him.

  99. He has blessed him.

  100. He's fulfilled everything that he's covenanted to do for him.

  101. You find it in the beginning of the chapter.

  102. And this group, this party of people,

  103. who've come on the ship from Malta.

  104. And they meet the native people.

  105. Do you see what it says?

  106. It says they were shown unusual kindness.

  107. And they built a fire.

  108. They welcomed us all.

  109. There was shelter, because it was raining and cold.

  110. And Paul has the experience with these Maltese...

  111. Maltese...

  112. Maltese...

  113. Maltese is...

  114. He has this great experience with these Maltese people...

  115. Of extraordinary, unusual kindness.

  116. And it's another evidence, isn't it, of God faithfully dealing with Paul in all his experiences.

  117. In the midst of trial and difficulty and shipwreck and impending disaster and unfair accusation,

  118. God shines through as a God of absolute faithfulness.

  119. That's what we've seen.

  120. He perseveres with the Apostle.

  121. He preserves him from danger.

  122. You see this in that strange incident, don't you, with the snake in verse 3.

  123. And they gather up sticks for the fire.

  124. And they didn't notice there's a viper.

  125. There's a snake hidden away.

  126. And it bites Paul on the hand.

  127. Paul is under threat.

  128. He's in some kind of danger.

  129. And the people expose us, don't they, immediately to their view of what God is like.

  130. What's their view of God?

  131. Can you see it?

  132. Their view of God is that he is an impersonal, superstitious God.

  133. And these people have that contrast, don't they?

  134. They think, well, Paul, you must have done something wrong.

  135. They're very superstitious.

  136. And that is contrasted to us with this view of God that is personal, loving, and faithful.

  137. And fatherly.

  138. The care that Paul experiences from God, day and night, the living God whom he serves.

  139. The islanders, they see this viper hanging from his hand.

  140. And do you remember the story?

  141. He shakes it into the fire.

  142. And they say, don't they, immediately the viper fastens on Paul's hand.

  143. Ah, he's been a murderer.

  144. The sea hasn't got him, so justice has finally caught up with him.

  145. What goes around comes around.

  146. He must have done something wrong.

  147. Look at verse 4.

  148. The ESV rightly has justice with a capital letter.

  149. Because that is the impersonal view of God that they have.

  150. He's escaped from the sea.

  151. He's escaped from the sea, so justice has caught up with him.

  152. Fate has got him in the end.

  153. Paul shakes his hand into the fire.

  154. And as they watch the snake curl up and die, they discover that Paul has survived.

  155. And then they swing, don't they, these Maltese people, they swing from one extreme to the other.

  156. And they deify him.

  157. They say he survived the snake.

  158. He must be a God, verse 6.

  159. And so can you see, these people, they have no concept, do they, of a loving, gracious, unchanging, faithful, all-powerful Heavenly Father.

  160. Who's dealing graciously with his servant.

  161. What they have is this impersonal, this superstitious view of what God is like.

  162. And Paul is experiencing, isn't he, the faithfulness of God, preserving him and keeping him.

  163. And caring for him in the midst of whatever circumstances he goes through.

  164. Notice in verse 7 how the chief Roman official provides hospitality to them.

  165. Verse 7, now in the neighbourhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, namely Publius.

  166. Who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.

  167. He was the man whom God was going to use to give to Paul the supplies for the rest of the journey.

  168. Verse 10, they honoured us greatly.

  169. And when we were about to sail, they put on board whatever we needed.

  170. That link, that generosity comes not only through Paul's hospitality, but through Paul's apostolic gift of healing.

  171. Look at verse 8.

  172. It happened that this guy's dad, Publius' father, lay sick with a fever and dysentery.

  173. And Paul visited him and prayed.

  174. And putting his hands on him, healed him.

  175. The word that Luke uses there literally is, Publius' father received medical attention.

  176. Luke is a doctor, isn't he?

  177. You wonder whether it's Luke and the Apostle Paul combining together in some kind of healing ministry.

  178. They use Luke's medical skills and Paul's apostolic gift.

  179. And he laid hands on them and they were restored.

  180. Verse 10, all their needs have been supplied as they go on to the next leg of the journey.

  181. And again, can you see the key to all of what God is doing?

  182. God is faithfully and graciously and kindly supplying all their needs.

  183. All the needs of his children.

  184. He is keeping his apostle in the hollow of his hand.

  185. We see that in the next stage, the next episode.

  186. The journey to Rome in verses 11 to 16.

  187. Notice how graciously God provides for the apostle.

  188. The particular ways he provides for them.

  189. When they arrive at Puteoli in the end of verse 13.

  190. Can you see it?

  191. Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there for several days.

  192. And from there we made a circuit and arrived at Regian.

  193. And after one day a south wind sprang up and on the second day we came to Puteoli.

  194. And they go on to these two towns that are about 30, 40 miles apart from Rome.

  195. And there, verse 14, we found brothers and were invited to stay with them for seven days.

  196. And so we came to Rome.

  197. What's the reason behind those details?

  198. Why is it that God so ordained those circumstances?

  199. It was that God recognised, didn't he, that the apostle Paul needed encouragement.

  200. And so he brings these brothers, he brings these believers to meet with him.

  201. And Paul thanked God and at the end of verse 15 he is encouraged by them.

  202. Can you see, laced throughout this chapter is the thoughtfulness of the living God.

  203. It's the personal touch of his faithfulness that reaches into the ordinary lives.

  204. The ordinary daily lives.

  205. Here is someone who greatly needs to be encouraged by God.

  206. And God provides him the people that will bring him this encouragement.

  207. And not only does God show his faithfulness in the provision that he makes,

  208. but in the promises he fulfills.

  209. Look at verse 16.

  210. When Paul got to Rome he was allowed to live by himself with a soldier to guard him.

  211. That's a very significant thing, isn't it?

  212. Several times over we've seen in the narrative, God has been speaking with the apostle.

  213. And encouraging him to believe that come what may,

  214. whatever the circumstances may seem to the contrary,

  215. Paul you are going to Rome.

  216. So chapter 23 and verse 11, Paul has given that really clear promise.

  217. The following night the Lord stood by him and said,

  218. Take courage, for as you've testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem,

  219. so you will do so in Rome.

  220. And the circumstances that occur from chapter 23, verse 11,

  221. to chapter 28 are pretty horrific.

  222. But they are the living God unfolding his purposes and his plans.

  223. And dealing with men and women and governors and accusers and storms and circumstances

  224. so that in everything God's purpose may be fulfilled.

  225. All the problems, all the false accusations, all the difficulties,

  226. God is at work in the midst of them.

  227. And it is a glorious thing to know God like that.

  228. It is a glorious thing to have this God as your God.

  229. And so I need to ask you this morning, don't I, what is your picture of God?

  230. Who is the God whom you know?

  231. Is he the vague, impersonal picture of justice or fate or luck?

  232. Who gives you what you deserve?

  233. But what goes around comes around.

  234. Is it that superstitious view of God that the people had?

  235. Or is it the personal knowledge of a living God who's come to us in the person of his son,

  236. the Lord Jesus Christ, and he transforms life?

  237. And he is working out the unfolding pattern of his purposes of a loving Heavenly Father.

  238. And if you know that God, it will bring you poise and peace and sufficiency and contentment into your life.

  239. Do you know God in this way?

  240. How wonderful it is to be able to discover the faithfulness of God as it is revealed here.

  241. And that's not all, is it?

  242. Because when you get to Rome with these promises in chapter 23 and chapter 27,

  243. Paul is given this special privilege.

  244. Look at verse 16.

  245. He's allowed to live by himself with a soldier to guard him.

  246. It's a remarkable situation.

  247. It's as if Paul has been put in Rome as an ambassador to Jesus.

  248. And he calls people to his residence.

  249. And they gather from all over this capital city of the world to come to him and to come to here.

  250. He calls people to his residence.

  251. He ministers to the Jews.

  252. He preaches fearlessly to them.

  253. And yet he's in a house with a soldier to guard him, probably chained to him.

  254. Do you notice that verse 20?

  255. For this reason, therefore, I've asked to see you and speak with you.

  256. And since it is because of the hope of Israel that I'm wearing this chain.

  257. Scholars think, don't they, that the Roman soldier has actually chained to him at this point.

  258. Paul is bound to a Roman soldier.

  259. You can imagine this poor Roman soldier didn't have the vaguest clue

  260. when Paul was brought into the house what was going to happen to him.

  261. When he clocked on for his shift that first day,

  262. little did he know who he was going to be chained to.

  263. And there were two Covenanter brothers.

  264. Big units.

  265. Massive, burly, strong men.

  266. And these Covenanter brothers,

  267. they had battled in Scotland for Christ's crown and covenant.

  268. They wanted a stand for the freedom to worship Jesus Christ.

  269. They were massive.

  270. Absolutely massive.

  271. And they were taken, one of them was taken prisoner by the English soldiers.

  272. And they chained him to one of the brothers.

  273. His mother said to his brother, and when he came back,

  274. Malcolm, they've taken Davy away and chained him to an English soldier.

  275. Malcolm and Davy were known as men of powerful spiritual impact.

  276. Whoever met them was slightly in awe of them

  277. because they were colossal physical figures,

  278. but they preached Christ fearlessly.

  279. And Malcolm said to his mother,

  280. heaven help the man who's chained to Davy.

  281. And I expect it was something like that

  282. for the soldier chained to the Apostle Paul, wasn't it?

  283. Heaven help the man who was chained to the Apostle Paul.

  284. He would hear the gospel in different ways

  285. to different people applied to him.

  286. And so Paul continued the ministry that God had given him.

  287. And so here is this reminder right at the end of Acts

  288. of the faithfulness of God to his people.

  289. But secondly, as we finish the book of Acts,

  290. we see the remarkable faithfulness of the Apostle Paul to God.

  291. The faithfulness of Paul to God.

  292. The very qualities that God reveals in his dealings with Paul

  293. are reproduced in Paul's life.

  294. The faithfulness of God is mirrored in Paul's faithfulness to God.

  295. That is, all of God's dealings with this man

  296. have not kind of brushed lightly off his character.

  297. They've gone deeply into his spirit.

  298. And what he had known of the faithfulness

  299. and the kindness of God

  300. began to be mirrored and pushed out in his own life.

  301. And here he is in his ministry in Rome from verse 17.

  302. Just notice his zeal.

  303. Three days after he arrives in Rome,

  304. he calls together the leaders of the Jews.

  305. And Paul is being faithful to what he recognized

  306. as the pattern and the purpose of God in his ministry.

  307. When he wrote to the Romans, do you remember?

  308. That great theme verse of the book of Romans,

  309. the gospel is the power of God to salvation.

  310. To everyone who believes.

  311. And we stop there, don't we?

  312. But the verse goes on,

  313. to the Jew first and then to the Gentile.

  314. Wherever he went in Acts,

  315. do you remember the pattern?

  316. Paul goes to the synagogue first.

  317. He goes to the plead with the Jewish people.

  318. And only when they turn away from him

  319. and refuse the message,

  320. he says, then I will go to the Gentiles.

  321. But here he addresses himself to the Jewish leaders.

  322. And after he's described his own experience

  323. of being arrested in Jerusalem

  324. and being handed over to the Romans,

  325. verse 21,

  326. they arranged to meet him.

  327. And they said to him,

  328. well, we've received no letters from Judea about you.

  329. And none of the brothers coming here

  330. has reported or spoken any evil of you.

  331. They arranged to meet him on a certain day.

  332. Then they come in larger numbers

  333. to the place where he was staying.

  334. Can you see the sheer faithfulness of his ministry?

  335. He witnessed to them.

  336. And that appears, doesn't it,

  337. to have been the characteristic

  338. of these two years in Rome.

  339. He bore witness to Christ.

  340. And whatever they did to him,

  341. wherever he went,

  342. however they tried to confine him

  343. and crush him,

  344. he bore witness to Christ.

  345. After the service,

  346. somebody gives you two pints of water.

  347. And as you carry the two pints of water,

  348. one of the children running around

  349. knocks into you.

  350. What happens

  351. with full pints of water?

  352. What happens?

  353. The water comes out, doesn't it?

  354. And so this is the apostle Paul.

  355. He is so full of the faithfulness of God

  356. and the kindness of Jesus Christ

  357. that when he is jostled,

  358. when he is struck,

  359. what comes out of the glasses?

  360. The Lord Jesus Christ, isn't it?

  361. Both in private and in public,

  362. he speaks and he witnesses tirely.

  363. Out of the abundance of the heart,

  364. Jesus says,

  365. the mouth speaks.

  366. And so Paul speaks of Christ.

  367. Verse 23,

  368. when they appointed a day for him,

  369. they came to him at his lodging

  370. in greater numbers.

  371. From morning to evening,

  372. he expounded to them,

  373. testifying to them the kingdom of God.

  374. He speaks continually

  375. during the whole period that he's in Rome.

  376. He was tireless for two years.

  377. Verse 31,

  378. he lived there two whole years

  379. at his own expense

  380. and welcomed all who came to him,

  381. proclaiming the kingdom of God

  382. and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ

  383. with all boldness

  384. and without hindrance.

  385. And so with that zeal

  386. and eagerness and willingness,

  387. that zeal marks the apostle Paul.

  388. It would have been so easy,

  389. wouldn't it,

  390. for him to make the excuse,

  391. I've been benched,

  392. I'm out of the public frame,

  393. it would have been so easy for him

  394. to make that excuse,

  395. well, I'm bound,

  396. what can I do?

  397. I'm in chains,

  398. I'm confined in this situation.

  399. Don't you know,

  400. I'm the leader of the church

  401. and yet I'm confined

  402. within these four walls.

  403. But in fact,

  404. what we see,

  405. like the pint glass,

  406. whenever he's jostled,

  407. Christ spills out.

  408. this tireless zeal,

  409. which has been given to him,

  410. desiring to be faithful.

  411. The second thing that marks

  412. is faithfulness,

  413. it's not only in the level

  414. of his commitment,

  415. the way that he's ready

  416. to be spent for God,

  417. but it's revealed in how he witnessed.

  418. Can you see he witnessed biblically?

  419. Luke is really insistent on this,

  420. isn't he?

  421. He says in verse 23,

  422. from morning till evening,

  423. he expounded to them,

  424. testifying to them

  425. the kingdom of God

  426. and trying to convince them

  427. about Jesus,

  428. both from the law of Moses

  429. and from the prophets.

  430. Paul found that some of them

  431. were convinced,

  432. others did not believe

  433. and they disagreed

  434. amongst themselves

  435. and they began to leave.

  436. And after Paul

  437. sees them leaving,

  438. he makes this statement,

  439. this final statement

  440. from the prophet Isaiah.

  441. Can you see it?

  442. The Holy Spirit

  443. was right in saying

  444. to your fathers

  445. through Isaiah the prophet.

  446. And then he quotes

  447. part of Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  448. The important point

  449. to grasp here

  450. is this vital area

  451. of Paul's faithfulness

  452. being wed,

  453. being tied

  454. to the Bible

  455. as the content

  456. that he declared

  457. concerning Christ.

  458. The focus of his ministry

  459. was Jesus

  460. but the place

  461. from which he taught them

  462. about Jesus

  463. was the Holy Scriptures.

  464. He taught them tirelessly.

  465. He taught them biblically.

  466. And do you notice,

  467. he taught them

  468. with a faithfulness

  469. which was no doubt

  470. profoundly costly.

  471. I've no doubt

  472. that Paul found it

  473. extremely costly

  474. to quote what he did

  475. to his own nation,

  476. to the Jewish people.

  477. He tells us,

  478. doesn't he,

  479. in the letter to the Romans,

  480. that he has a special love

  481. for the Jewish people.

  482. It's a striking thing.

  483. He says,

  484. in Romans 9 verse 1,

    Romans 9:1

  485. I'm speaking the truth

  486. in Christ.

  487. I'm not lying.

  488. My conscience bears me witness

  489. in the Holy Spirit

  490. that I have great sorrow

  491. and unceasing anguish

  492. in heart.

  493. for I wish that I myself

  494. were accursed

  495. and I were cut off

  496. from Christ

  497. for the sake of my brothers,

  498. my kinsmen

  499. according to the flesh.

  500. So here is a man

  501. who's bearing witness

  502. to the Lord Jesus,

  503. testifying to the Lord Jesus

  504. and he doesn't do it

  505. in a cool

  506. and detached way.

  507. He's saying,

  508. I've got anguish

  509. of heart

  510. for my brothers and sisters.

  511. In fact,

  512. I'm prepared

  513. that I would be accursed

  514. so that you might

  515. believe this message.

  516. In order that you

  517. might find salvation,

  518. it is incredible passion.

  519. And that spirit

  520. seems to be

  521. the driving force

  522. of the apostles' evangelism.

  523. He was deadly

  524. in earnest.

  525. And yet he's ready,

  526. isn't he,

  527. to speak to them

  528. with an extraordinary

  529. degree of faithfulness

  530. and thoroughness

  531. as he takes

  532. the word of God

  533. and he explains it

  534. and he applies it

  535. to them.

  536. The Holy Spirit

  537. spoke the truth

  538. to your forefathers.

  539. When he said,

  540. through Isaiah the prophet,

  541. go to this people

  542. and say,

  543. you will indeed hear

  544. but you'll never understand.

  545. You will indeed see

  546. but you'll never perceive.

  547. For this people's heart

  548. has grown dull

  549. and with their ears

  550. they can barely hear

  551. and with their eyes

  552. they have closed

  553. lest they should see

  554. with their eyes

  555. and hear with their ears

  556. and understand

  557. with their hearts

  558. and turn and I would heal them.

  559. They hardly hear

  560. with their ears.

  561. They've closed

  562. their eyes.

  563. The apostle is taking up

  564. this scripture

  565. from Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  566. and he applies it

  567. to the people of Israel

  568. in front of him

  569. of his own generation

  570. like Isaiah had applied it

  571. to his generation

  572. and he's saying to them

  573. and he's saying to us

  574. it is possible

  575. to hear God's word

  576. Sunday by Sunday

  577. and it not soften

  578. but harden you.

  579. The picture is

  580. of calloused

  581. of being calloused.

  582. You know if you work

  583. in the garden

  584. we've got kind of

  585. city hands

  586. it's such a thing

  587. as minister's hands

  588. aren't there

  589. kind of soft

  590. wet minister's hands

  591. but if you work

  592. in the garden

  593. and you work

  594. with a spade

  595. and you work

  596. with it all day

  597. what happens

  598. your skin

  599. bits of it

  600. gets hard

  601. doesn't it?

  602. It gets calloused

  603. so you go to

  604. a country congregation

  605. and you shake

  606. a farmer's hand

  607. and a farmer's hands

  608. they're rough

  609. and they're hard

  610. and there's not feeling

  611. so they're so calloused

  612. you could get a pin

  613. in a farmer's hand

  614. and you could put

  615. the pin into

  616. the farmer's hand

  617. into the skin

  618. but it wouldn't

  619. have an effect

  620. would it

  621. because the skin

  622. is so hard

  623. you can't get through

  624. very easily

  625. you don't easily

  626. penetrate

  627. a farmer's hand

  628. and that's a serious thing

  629. I'm sure

  630. if it kind of

  631. goes on and on

  632. and on

  633. doesn't it?

  634. But

  635. in a spiritual condition

  636. it's more serious

  637. isn't it?

  638. It's desperately serious

  639. the apostle Paul

  640. on the prophet Isaiah

  641. is saying

  642. you can hear

  643. God's words

  644. so often

  645. and you can hear it

  646. but not hear it

  647. and you can see it

  648. but not see it

  649. and your hand

  650. can become callous

  651. so that it doesn't

  652. penetrate

  653. and so these people

  654. have heard God

  655. speaking to them

  656. since they were children

  657. they've worked away

  658. actually

  659. the Jewish leaders

  660. they literally

  661. work away

  662. with the word of God

  663. and like a man

  664. works with his hands

  665. and his hands

  666. becomes callous

  667. so their hearts

  668. become hardened

  669. and that is a desperate

  670. condition

  671. but it is common

  672. and it is really common

  673. in churches like this

  674. it's particularly common

  675. with those

  676. who've been

  677. unusually privileged

  678. and so these Jews

  679. whom Paul is speaking

  680. they really are a warning

  681. to us

  682. aren't they

  683. at the end of

  684. the book of Acts

  685. their ears

  686. have scarcely heard

  687. their eyes

  688. scarcely see

  689. they've got

  690. spiritual

  691. glaucoma

  692. they cannot

  693. see clearly

  694. they're looking

  695. but they can't

  696. make it out

  697. they have eyes

  698. but they do not

  699. perceive

  700. how do you get

  701. like that?

  702. you get it

  703. really easily

  704. and really simply

  705. by not treating

  706. the word of God

  707. seriously

  708. and when you have

  709. that kind of

  710. detached attitude

  711. to it

  712. when you sit here

  713. Sunday morning

  714. and Sunday evening

  715. by Sunday morning

  716. after Sunday evening

  717. and you know

  718. what God is asking

  719. you to do

  720. and you refuse

  721. to do it

  722. your skin

  723. spiritually

  724. becomes calloused

  725. you'll be

  726. ever hearing

  727. but never

  728. understanding

  729. you'll be

  730. ever seeing

  731. but your eyes

  732. will be closed

  733. do you notice

  734. Paul continues

  735. to quote Isaiah

  736. doesn't he

  737. lest they should

  738. see with their

  739. eyes

  740. and hear

  741. with their

  742. ears

  743. and understand

  744. with their

  745. heart

  746. and turn

  747. and I

  748. would heal

  749. them

  750. do you notice

  751. there

  752. there's a

  753. progression

  754. isn't it

  755. it's not

  756. something

  757. they were

  758. doing

  759. at the end

  760. of that

  761. quote

  762. it's

  763. something

  764. that's

  765. being

  766. done

  767. to them

  768. that's

  769. the really

  770. terrifying

  771. thing

  772. it's the

  773. next stage

  774. of the

  775. progression

  776. you refuse

  777. to see

  778. and at some

  779. point you

  780. can't see

  781. imagine a

  782. man who's a

  783. prisoner

  784. dealing so

  785. realistically

  786. with people

  787. like this

  788. what he's

  789. saying

  790. is what

  791. Isaiah

  792. said

  793. that there

  794. comes a

  795. time

  796. when people

  797. who've

  798. refused

  799. to hear

  800. and refused

  801. to be

  802. moved

  803. and refused

  804. to be

  805. touched

  806. by God

  807. the Holy

  808. Spirit

  809. there comes

  810. a time

  811. when they

  812. cannot hear

  813. and they

  814. cannot see

  815. and their

  816. heart cannot

  817. respond

  818. think of

  819. Pharaoh in

  820. Egypt

  821. do you

  822. remember

  823. that phrase

  824. that keeps

  825. coming up

  826. that Pharaoh

  827. in Egypt

  828. when he's

  829. confronted with

  830. the living

  831. God

  832. by Joseph

  833. he hardens

  834. his heart

  835. he hardens

  836. his heart

  837. against God

  838. and he does

  839. it frequently

  840. and you

  841. think

  842. what is

  843. this man

  844. doing

  845. keeping

  846. hardening

  847. his heart

  848. but then

  849. there comes

  850. the time

  851. where

  852. in the

  853. story

  854. you don't

  855. read that

  856. Pharaoh

  857. hardened

  858. his heart

  859. you read

  860. that God

  861. hardened

  862. Pharaoh's

  863. heart

  864. and look

  865. verse 28

  866. Paul applies

  867. that to the

  868. contemporary

  869. Jews

  870. and he

  871. says this

  872. he says

  873. therefore

  874. let it be

  875. known to

  876. you that

  877. this salvation

  878. of God

  879. has been

  880. sent to

  881. the Gentiles

  882. and they

  883. will listen

  884. verse 28

  885. is said

  886. by a man

  887. who's told

  888. us

  889. I've got

  890. unceasing

  891. anguish

  892. and unceasing

  893. sorrow

  894. I wish

  895. that I

  896. could be

  897. accursed

  898. for the

  899. sake

  900. of my

  901. own

  902. people

  903. I wish

  904. that I

  905. could be

  906. cut off

  907. from Christ

  908. so that

  909. you might

  910. believe

  911. in the

  912. Lord

  913. Jesus

  914. for the

  915. sake

  916. of my

  917. own

  918. brothers

  919. for the

  920. sake

  921. of my

  922. own

  923. race

  924. the

  925. people

  926. of

  927. Israel

  928. and then

  929. he

  930. says

  931. to

  932. them

  933. at the

  934. end

  935. of

  936. Acts

  937. I

  938. want

  939. you

  940. to

  941. know

  942. that

  943. God's

  944. salvation

  945. because

  946. you've

  947. turned

  948. away

  949. from

  950. it

  951. has

  952. been

  953. sent

  954. to

  955. the

  956. Gentiles

  957. and

  958. they

  959. will

  960. listen

  961. I

  962. have

  963. little

  964. doubt

  965. what

  966. Luke

  967. wants

  968. you

  969. and I

  970. to

  971. see

  972. at

  973. the

  974. end

  975. of

  976. Acts

  977. he

  978. wants

  979. us

  980. to see

  981. this

  982. picture

  983. of

  984. the

  985. Jewish

  986. people

  987. here

  988. at

  989. this

  990. point

  991. having

  992. lost

  993. their

  994. opportunity

  995. and

  996. from

  997. now

  998. on

  999. the

  1000. gospel

  1001. goes

  1002. out

  1003. to

  1004. the

  1005. Gentiles

  1006. but

  1007. it's

  1008. true

  1009. in

  1010. IPC

  1011. this

  1012. morning

  1013. not

  1014. just

  1015. of

  1016. the

  1017. ancient

  1018. people

  1019. of

  1020. Israel

  1021. that

  1022. when

  1023. you

  1024. refuse

  1025. the

  1026. word

  1027. of

  1028. God

  1029. long

  1030. enough

  1031. the

  1032. day

  1033. comes

  1034. when

  1035. the

  1036. spirit

  1037. of

  1038. God

  1039. says

  1040. okay

  1041. and

  1042. he

  1043. moves

  1044. on

  1045. and

  1046. so

  1047. as

  1048. we

  1049. close

  1050. out

  1051. the

  1052. book

  1053. of

  1054. Acts

  1055. you

  1056. see

  1057. we've

  1058. seen

  1059. the

  1060. gospel

  1061. going

  1062. forward

  1063. haven't

  1064. we

  1065. breaking

  1066. through

  1067. barrier

  1068. after

  1069. barrier

  1070. the

  1071. church

  1072. growing

  1073. but

  1074. we

  1075. also

  1076. have

  1077. this

  1078. terrifying

  1079. warning

  1080. that

  1081. isn't

  1082. there

  1083. a danger

  1084. you and

  1085. I

  1086. who

  1087. have

  1088. so

  1089. much

  1090. privilege

  1091. who

  1092. are

  1093. so

  1094. familiar

  1095. with

  1096. the

  1097. word

  1098. of

  1099. God

  1100. that

  1101. our

  1102. hearts

  1103. become

  1104. calloused

  1105. and

  1106. God's

  1107. word

  1108. doesn't

  1109. get

  1110. through

  1111. anymore

  1112. and

  1113. we

  1114. can

  1115. sit

  1116. through

  1117. sermon

  1118. after

  1119. sermon

  1120. and

  1121. we

  1122. can

  1123. sing

  1124. the

  1125. songs

  1126. after

  1127. song

  1128. but

  1129. it

  1130. just

  1131. bounces

  1132. off

  1133. us

  1134. and

  1135. we

  1136. have

  1137. eyes

  1138. but

  1139. we

  1140. don't

  1141. perceive

  1142. and

  1143. we

  1144. have

  1145. ears

  1146. but

  1147. we

  1148. don't

  1149. hear

  1150. and

  1151. the

  1152. incredible

  1153. danger

  1154. of that

  1155. is that

  1156. God

  1157. says

  1158. okay

  1159. and

  1160. suddenly

  1161. we

  1162. don't

  1163. hear

  1164. God

  1165. speaking

  1166. to

  1167. us

  1168. anymore

  1169. and

  1170. the

  1171. gospel

  1172. goes

  1173. to

  1174. others

  1175. who

  1176. will

  1177. receive

  1178. it

  1179. and

  1180. hear

  1181. it

  1182. history

  1183. as well

  1184. as the

  1185. Bible

  1186. makes

  1187. it

  1188. abundantly

  1189. clearly

  1190. clear

  1191. that

  1192. this

  1193. pattern

  1194. of

  1195. God's

  1196. working

  1197. is

  1198. still

  1199. how

  1200. he

  1201. works

  1202. my

  1203. prayer

  1204. is that

  1205. as we

  1206. come to

  1207. the

  1208. end

  1209. of

  1210. Acts

  1211. we

  1212. might

  1213. see

  1214. that

  1215. this

  1216. faithful

  1217. witness

  1218. of a

  1219. man

  1220. this

  1221. man

  1222. that

  1223. God

  1224. has

  1225. used

  1226. to

  1227. be

  1228. a

  1229. blessing

  1230. to

  1231. the

  1232. ancient

  1233. world

  1234. and

  1235. a

  1236. blessing

  1237. to

  1238. the

  1239. Gentiles

  1240. that

  1241. he

  1242. might

  1243. be

  1244. a

  1245. blessing

  1246. to

  1247. you

  1248. and

  1249. me

  1250. what

  1251. do

  1252. the

  1253. Psalms

  1254. warn us

  1255. again

  1256. and

  1257. again

  1258. what

  1259. were

  1260. the

  1261. people

  1262. of

  1263. Israel

  1264. told

  1265. again

  1266. and

  1267. again

  1268. today

  1269. if

  1270. you

  1271. hear

  1272. his

  1273. voice

  1274. harden

  1275. not

  1276. your

  1277. heart

  1278. the

  1279. gospel

  1280. is

  1281. unstoppable

  1282. and the

  1283. church

  1284. of

  1285. Jesus

  1286. Christ

  1287. stands

  1288. and

  1289. grows

  1290. forever

  1291. the

  1292. gospel

  1293. will

  1294. grow

  1295. the

  1296. Gentiles

  1297. will

  1298. receive

  1299. it

  1300. we

  1301. are

  1302. caught

  1303. up

  1304. in

  1305. that

  1306. but

  1307. what

  1308. about

  1309. you

  1310. today

  1311. if

  1312. you

  1313. hear

  1314. his

  1315. voice

  1316. harden

  1317. not

  1318. your

  1319. heart

  1320. let's

  1321. pray

  1322. God

  1323. Thank you.
