  1. Turn your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  3. We finished a kind of year-long series in the Book of Acts last week,

  4. and next week Ruben is going to start preaching through the Book of Ruth for us over September and October,

  5. and Andrew Quay is going to preach Genesis 4 to 11 in the evening,

  6. so you'll hear from me a little bit less.

  7. I'm going to preach some one-offs over the next while.

  8. We've found, haven't we, in the Book of Acts looking at long chapters.

  9. We've done that, and we're going to go from one extreme to the other.

  10. I want us to look at one verse this morning.

  11. We're going to squeeze the juice out of the orange and look at one verse.

  12. It's Ephesians chapter 1, verse 7.

    Ephesians 1:7

  13. In him we have redemption. That's the word.

  14. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace.

  15. In lots of ways I want to look at one word, redemption.

  16. What is your problem?

  17. What's your problem? Said the cyclist to the driver.

  18. What's your problem? Said the woman on the tube to the man sitting opposite him.

  19. What's your problem? Said the parent to the child.

  20. What's your problem? Said one football player to another.

  21. It's a great question, isn't it? What is your problem?

  22. What is your problem? What is your greatest need?

  23. That's the first point. There's six points this morning.

  24. There possibly might be seven, but I haven't decided yet.

  25. But there's six points and they should be appearing on the screen before me one at a time.

  26. What is your greatest need? The need for redemption.

  27. There's lots of answers people gave, don't they?

  28. Sometimes we go to the doctor and we say to the doctor, I've got a pain here.

  29. Here is the problem.

  30. And he examines our wrist maybe and he looks at our wrist and he says, no, that's actually just a symptom.

  31. Your problem isn't there. Your problem is there or your problem is there.

  32. Your presenting symptom shows a deeper problem.

  33. The problem is really here.

  34. And I think when we come to God, we can often be like that.

  35. When we come to God, you might think you know exactly what you need this morning.

  36. But when we put ourselves into the hands of God, we discover there is something different.

  37. There is something deeper.

  38. There is something far more radical that God intends.

  39. And when he implies in this verse, the Apostle Paul, when he writes about the need for redemption,

  40. that the deepest need of your heart and my heart is tied to this little word that is often used, sins.

  41. It's the word transgressions in the verse.

  42. In him we have redemption.

  43. Through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, the forgiveness of our transgressions.

  44. The word transgression is rebellion.

  45. It is deliberately breaking God's law.

  46. It is a do not touch the wet paint and putting your hands on the wet paint.

  47. Do not step on the grass deliberately, consciously going onto the grass.

  48. Transgression is deliberate breaking of God's law.

  49. It is going over the border of what God says is acceptable and unacceptable,

  50. of what is legitimate and illegitimate.

  51. It speaks of our disobedience to God's will and to God's law.

  52. And so this redemption produces two things.

  53. Can you see it?

  54. The Apostle speaks, doesn't he, of forgiveness.

  55. That's the thing that we're probably most familiar with this morning if we've been in church.

  56. That when someone transgresses God's law, trespasses God's will and commandments,

  57. they are guilty in the eyes of God of transgression, of rebellion.

  58. They bear, in relation to God, a burden of guilt.

  59. Sometimes we feel that.

  60. Sometimes we don't.

  61. Often, most often, people are not burdened by guilt.

  62. And so guilt is not so much something that you feel, but something that you have, something that you bear.

  63. When you disobey God's law, when you trespass his commandment, when you trespass his will,

  64. you are guilty.

  65. I am guilty.

  66. In the sight and presence of God.

  67. There are lots of people in London today, lots of my friends, they have no sense of guilt.

  68. That doesn't mean they're not guilty.

  69. It doesn't mean that they're not sinners.

  70. It does not mean that they do not need forgiveness.

  71. It's simply that they're unaware of their burden of guilt.

  72. They think, maybe you think, that your greatest need is something different.

  73. Maybe it's happiness.

  74. Maybe it's relationship.

  75. Maybe it's prosperity.

  76. Money.

  77. But here the apostle is diagnosing your greatest problem and mine.

  78. The deepest need of the human heart.

  79. For which the greatest blessing of the Christian faith is the answer.

  80. And that is forgiveness.

  81. From God.

  82. Forgiveness from God.

  83. You might not have realised that.

  84. I've come into church this morning unaware of that.

  85. That your greatest need is for forgiveness.

  86. And Paul says that in Jesus Christ,

  87. in the good news, in the gospel,

  88. not only do we have forgiveness because we bear the burden of our guilt,

  89. and one day that will be apparent to us.

  90. One day we will hear the judgment of God on your life and on my life.

  91. We will hear guilty before God.

  92. And we'll have no plea.

  93. We'll have no excuse to make.

  94. But there's another factor in this kind of need of redemption.

  95. And it's not just the need of the burden of our guilt being lifted

  96. by the proclamation of God's forgiveness in Christ.

  97. The other need is that we are not only guilty as sinners,

  98. but we are slaves to sin.

  99. We're slaves of sin.

  100. That's what the word kind of redemption contains, doesn't it?

  101. It's got this picture within it of slavery.

  102. Of being slaves to the very thing that's made us guilty.

  103. And that's contained within this whole thought,

  104. this whole concept of redemption.

  105. The whole idea of redemption, it's a Bible word in many ways.

  106. It's pictured for us in the Bible supremely by the people of Israel

  107. that were slaves in Egypt, hundreds of years after Joseph.

  108. And throughout the whole of the Bible,

  109. that is the picture of human beings enslaved.

  110. It's the picture of life without Jesus Christ,

  111. of being enslaved to the sin that we're guilty of.

  112. You might have believed the delusion that human beings,

  113. we are free.

  114. You might think, no, no, no, no.

  115. We are free.

  116. I am free.

  117. I am free to choose whatever I want.

  118. And yet, whenever we're willing to look at humanity

  119. and to look at our lives,

  120. we will discover our humanity and we are in chains,

  121. in bondage,

  122. a slave to our sin.

  123. You'll know that in your experience.

  124. We discover that far from being able to change,

  125. our pattern of life is we are in bondage.

  126. Here's a man who's got furious temper.

  127. Furious temper that gets out of control.

  128. He sees the damage that it causes.

  129. He sees the heartbreak it brings to other people.

  130. And he recognises that.

  131. And so he says to himself,

  132. I will change.

  133. And for a time he can.

  134. But what's the real story?

  135. The real story is that ultimately,

  136. he finds that the chains of his temper

  137. still bind him.

  138. And so every so often,

  139. maybe a little bit more rarely,

  140. but every so often,

  141. it breaks out again.

  142. Or it shows itself in other forms.

  143. Well, we can apply that to every sin.

  144. That we are in bondage to.

  145. And that is why we need redemption.

  146. We do not just need forgiveness.

  147. We are like someone when they've committed some crime

  148. against the law of the land.

  149. They're not only declared by the judge to be guilty,

  150. but we're locked up.

  151. We're put inside.

  152. And it's no good going to that prisoner

  153. when they're locked up inside

  154. and saying,

  155. I've got good news from you.

  156. You've been delivered from your guilt.

  157. You've been delivered from your guilt.

  158. Your guilt has been removed.

  159. What would the prisoner say?

  160. The prisoner would say,

  161. I want to be free.

  162. I want to be set loose.

  163. I want to be released.

  164. And there's a spiritual parallel for that,

  165. obviously, isn't there?

  166. And so number one,

  167. the need of redemption.

  168. Number two,

  169. the nature of redemption.

  170. The word simply means

  171. being set free

  172. by the paying of a price.

  173. Being set free by the paying of a price.

  174. Let me explain it to you.

  175. Its background is in the ancient world

  176. as well as in the Bible.

  177. And so when two countries go to war,

  178. when two armies go to war

  179. and one army is victorious over the other army,

  180. they conquer the other army,

  181. they would take some of the best of the soldiers.

  182. They would take some of the cream of the conquered army.

  183. And the defeated army,

  184. the best of the defeated army,

  185. would be taken away.

  186. And they would be made slaves in a foreign land.

  187. And then what would happen was

  188. there would be negotiations

  189. between the defeated party and the victors.

  190. And the defeated party might agree

  191. to buy back some of those

  192. who'd been taken into slavery

  193. in this foreign land.

  194. It mattered greatly to the people of their country.

  195. Those soldiers that had been taken captive,

  196. they were valuable.

  197. And so a ransom price is agreed.

  198. And that ransom price is paid.

  199. And the captives would be released

  200. and be brought back.

  201. In the Old Testament,

  202. the great picture is

  203. that picture of Israel in Egypt.

  204. Of God's redemption of a people

  205. in the land of Egypt.

  206. The Exodus.

  207. And the people at the start of Exodus,

  208. just hundreds of years after Joseph,

  209. they are in bondage to Pharaoh.

  210. They are in a situation, aren't they,

  211. of utter helplessness.

  212. And they cry out to God

  213. and God comes down.

  214. And clearly only God can do it.

  215. God comes down

  216. and releases

  217. the people of Israel.

  218. He says,

  219. I am the Lord your God

  220. who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

  221. They couldn't save themselves.

  222. God puts out his strong arm

  223. and his mighty hand

  224. and it is costly to God

  225. to redeem them.

  226. There's a lamb,

  227. a perfect lamb,

  228. a spotless lamb

  229. who was slain

  230. and he is the ransom price

  231. to which his people were delivered.

  232. And God sets a pattern,

  233. doesn't he, in Exodus?

  234. A pattern from which

  235. his people have learned

  236. all through the ages

  237. that he was the redeemer.

  238. You cannot save yourself.

  239. You cannot redeem yourself.

  240. That's what it says.

  241. But that God

  242. delivered his people

  243. at a ransom price.

  244. The Apostle Peter says

  245. to the church there,

  246. he says,

  247. you have been redeemed

  248. and not with ordinary wealth,

  249. not with silver and gold,

  250. but by the precious blood

  251. of Jesus Christ.

  252. a lamb without blemish

  253. and without spot.

  254. And that is the nature

  255. of redemption.

  256. It is deliverance.

  257. It is freedom.

  258. It is forgiveness.

  259. Paul ties the two together,

  260. doesn't he,

  261. in Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  262. and verse 7.

  263. In him we have redemption

  264. through his blood,

  265. the forgiveness of sins.

  266. But redemption

  267. is more than forgiveness.

  268. The two

  269. are not completely matching.

  270. They complement each other.

  271. They don't exhaust each other.

  272. We've got to put them

  273. alongside each other.

  274. There is redemption,

  275. deliverance from bondage,

  276. and all that it involves,

  277. and forgiveness,

  278. freedom from guilt,

  279. and reconciliation to God.

  280. The need for redemption,

  281. the nature of redemption.

  282. Thirdly, let's look at

  283. the source of redemption.

  284. Where does this redemption

  285. come from?

  286. What is your problem?

  287. What is your problem?

  288. What is your deepest need?

  289. Where is your deepest need met?

  290. Where does deliverance

  291. from sins bondage

  292. and forgiveness

  293. from its guilt come from?

  294. Paul answers it,

  295. doesn't he,

  296. in the first two words.

  297. Can you say it?

  298. Verse 7.

  299. In him.

  300. In Christ,

  301. we have redemption.

  302. And that's the source of it.

  303. Doesn't come from

  304. any other source.

  305. Deliverance from sins bondage

  306. and forgiveness

  307. from sins guilt

  308. come from being

  309. in Christ.

  310. It does not come

  311. from any other source.

  312. It doesn't come

  313. from the psychologist

  314. or the counsellor.

  315. No

  316. true

  317. guilt

  318. has ever been lifted

  319. by the psychologist.

  320. There's such a thing

  321. as false guilt

  322. and the psychologist

  323. can certainly help

  324. with that.

  325. The counsellor

  326. can certainly help

  327. with that.

  328. But the guilt

  329. of sin

  330. that comes from being

  331. under the judgment

  332. of a holy God

  333. can only be lifted

  334. in Jesus Christ.

  335. It's the only place.

  336. Paul says

  337. it's in him.

  338. You go to him.

  339. It's because

  340. as Ephesians 1

  341. is teaching

  342. every blessing

  343. of the Christian gospel

  344. has been given to us

  345. in Christ.

  346. You'll not find it

  347. anywhere else.

  348. It's the exclusive

  349. nature of the Christian gospel.

  350. The exclusive

  351. nature of the Christian message.

  352. You don't find it

  353. in any other religion.

  354. You don't find it

  355. in any other source.

  356. You don't find it

  357. in any other

  358. kind of life coach

  359. or self-help source.

  360. It is in Christ.

  361. That's where you need

  362. to go this morning.

  363. God has

  364. in his

  365. marvellous

  366. wisdom

  367. and grace

  368. arranged

  369. to deal

  370. with his people's bondage

  371. and to deliver us

  372. from guilt

  373. in Christ.

  374. Christ.

  375. And so the great

  376. and vital thing

  377. for you this morning

  378. for every man

  379. and woman

  380. and boy and girl

  381. who is alive

  382. is to be

  383. in Christ.

  384. That's the great need.

  385. To be united

  386. to him.

  387. As a branch

  388. is to

  389. the vine

  390. as a branch

  391. is to the tree

  392. as a limb

  393. is connected

  394. to the body

  395. so that

  396. from Christ

  397. we might receive

  398. redemption.

  399. The forgiveness

  400. of sins.

  401. It's why

  402. saving faith

  403. is

  404. so vital

  405. isn't it?

  406. It's not

  407. faith

  408. that saves us

  409. but it is

  410. faith

  411. that connects us

  412. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  413. It is by

  414. saving faith

  415. this morning

  416. by you

  417. reaching out

  418. by you

  419. entrusting

  420. by you

  421. resting

  422. by you

  423. relying

  424. on the Lord

  425. Jesus Christ

  426. and being

  427. united

  428. to him

  429. you receive

  430. redemption

  431. that is in

  432. Jesus Christ.

  433. The need

  434. for redemption

  435. the nature

  436. of redemption

  437. the source

  438. of redemption

  439. the ground

  440. of redemption.

  441. How can God

  442. do this?

  443. On what

  444. ground

  445. does God

  446. redeem

  447. those who are

  448. in bondage

  449. to sin

  450. and under

  451. sin's guilt

  452. and sin's judgment?

  453. Well the answer

  454. is in verse 7

  455. again

  456. it's at the end

  457. of the verse

  458. isn't it?

  459. It is

  460. in accordance

  461. to the riches

  462. of his grace.

  463. According

  464. to the riches

  465. of his grace

  466. which he lavished

  467. on us

  468. he poured

  469. upon us

  470. with all wisdom

  471. and with all

  472. understanding.

  473. Here is the

  474. why.

  475. This is the

  476. basis on which

  477. God can redeem

  478. you and I.

  479. God does not

  480. redeem by saying

  481. you do this

  482. and I will

  483. provide that.

  484. God

  485. he doesn't say

  486. to us this

  487. morning

  488. you achieve

  489. this level

  490. and I will

  491. let you in.

  492. You get the

  493. grades

  494. and we'll

  495. give you

  496. access to the

  497. course.

  498. That's not

  499. what he does.

  500. He says

  501. I will bring

  502. you redemption

  503. I will bring

  504. you forgiveness

  505. and he does it

  506. by free

  507. unmerited

  508. grace.

  509. it is a gift

  510. of God.

  511. We can

  512. neither

  513. attain it

  514. as a prize

  515. nor can we

  516. earn it as a

  517. wage.

  518. We are given

  519. it as a gift

  520. and in his

  521. lavish grace

  522. undeserved

  523. kindness

  524. this is what

  525. God has done

  526. for us

  527. in Jesus

  528. Christ.

  529. It's

  530. illustrated

  531. isn't it

  532. in the book

  533. of Exodus

  534. again that

  535. supreme

  536. picture of

  537. redemption

  538. the people

  539. of Israel

  540. they are

  541. in Egypt

  542. and the

  543. people of

  544. Israel

  545. could not

  546. get out

  547. of the

  548. land

  549. of Egypt.

  550. The people

  551. of Israel

  552. could not

  553. free themselves

  554. they are

  555. enslaved

  556. until God

  557. comes down

  558. and frees

  559. them.

  560. And God

  561. does something

  562. wonderfully

  563. unique

  564. doesn't he?

  565. It is his

  566. work of

  567. redemption

  568. to achieve

  569. their deliverance.

  570. And that's

  571. why Christians

  572. we are obsessed

  573. with amazing

  574. grace.

  575. Amazing

  576. grace.

  577. And it is

  578. by grace

  579. alone

  580. by faith

  581. alone

  582. in Jesus

  583. Christ

  584. alone

  585. that we

  586. are redeemed

  587. from the

  588. bondage

  589. and the

  590. guilt

  591. and the

  592. power of

  593. sin.

  594. Number five

  595. the means

  596. of redemption.

  597. The means

  598. of redemption

  599. so the

  600. need of it

  601. the need

  602. of redemption

  603. lies doesn't

  604. it in our

  605. sin

  606. and our

  607. rebellion

  608. and that's

  609. produced

  610. our guilt

  611. and it's

  612. put us

  613. in bondage

  614. that's the

  615. need.

  616. The nature

  617. of it is

  618. deliverance

  619. upon the

  620. payment of

  621. a ransom

  622. price.

  623. The source

  624. of redemption

  625. while it's

  626. all in

  627. God

  628. the ground

  629. of our

  630. redemption

  631. is his

  632. undeserved

  633. kindness

  634. and the

  635. means

  636. you notice

  637. what is the

  638. means by

  639. which we're

  640. saved?

  641. It's in the

  642. middle of

  643. verse 7

  644. we have

  645. redemption

  646. through his

  647. blood.

  648. In him

  649. we have

  650. redemption

  651. through his

  652. blood.

  653. so remember

  654. the very

  655. meaning of

  656. the word

  657. the very

  658. meaning of

  659. the word

  660. of redemption

  661. throughout the

  662. Old Testament

  663. as well as

  664. in the world

  665. in which

  666. Paul lived

  667. was the

  668. freeing

  669. of someone

  670. or something

  671. by the

  672. payment of

  673. a price.

  674. Pawn shops

  675. isn't it?

  676. So cash

  677. converters

  678. you ever

  679. got a

  680. cash

  681. converters?

  682. There's not

  683. many nods

  684. but take

  685. your goods

  686. cash

  687. converters

  688. it's on

  689. Xbridge

  690. Road

  691. and you

  692. go in

  693. and you

  694. hand over

  695. your

  696. Xbox

  697. or your

  698. Playstation

  699. and

  700. cash

  701. converters

  702. gives you

  703. money

  704. for it.

  705. But the

  706. great thing

  707. about cash

  708. converters

  709. is when

  710. you've got

  711. enough money

  712. you can

  713. go and

  714. you can

  715. buy it

  716. back.

  717. When

  718. you've got

  719. enough money

  720. when payday

  721. comes you

  722. can go

  723. back and

  724. you can

  725. buy it

  726. back.

  727. You can

  728. go in

  729. and redeem

  730. it.

  731. And the

  732. way that

  733. you

  734. redeem

  735. the

  736. item

  737. is by

  738. paying

  739. the

  740. price.

  741. Sometimes

  742. people did

  743. that didn't

  744. they in

  745. old days

  746. with quite

  747. expensive

  748. things and

  749. so there

  750. was a

  751. considerable

  752. price to

  753. be paid.

  754. The whole

  755. idea of

  756. redemption

  757. there's this

  758. concept of

  759. the payment

  760. of a

  761. price.

  762. God has

  763. paid the

  764. ultimate

  765. price

  766. hasn't he

  767. in the

  768. blood of

  769. his

  770. son

  771. Jesus

  772. Christ.

  773. That is

  774. the price

  775. of

  776. redemption.

  777. If you

  778. are trusting

  779. in Jesus

  780. Christ

  781. if you

  782. have put

  783. your

  784. faith

  785. in the

  786. Lord

  787. Jesus

  788. if you

  789. are

  790. connected

  791. to him

  792. savingly

  793. you've

  794. been

  795. ransomed

  796. !

  797. redeemed

  798. by the

  799. precious

  800. blood

  801. of Jesus

  802. Christ.

  803. lots

  804. and lots

  805. of people

  806. have

  807. difficulty

  808. with

  809. this

  810. and they

  811. will say

  812. I don't

  813. understand

  814. why

  815. God

  816. demands

  817. this kind

  818. of ransom.

  819. You might

  820. say when

  821. people do

  822. something

  823. nasty to

  824. me or

  825. when people

  826. do something

  827. to me

  828. that offends

  829. me and

  830. they need

  831. my forgiveness

  832. I simply

  833. say out of

  834. my kindness

  835. and out of

  836. my benevolence

  837. I forgive

  838. you and

  839. let's forget

  840. about it.

  841. Why can't

  842. God be as

  843. magnanimous

  844. as I am?

  845. Why can't

  846. God be as

  847. kind as I

  848. am?

  849. Why does

  850. God demand

  851. that a price

  852. be paid?

  853. Why does

  854. God demand

  855. a ransom?

  856. It's barbaric.

  857. The answer

  858. to this

  859. we could spend

  860. all day

  861. talking about

  862. this but

  863. the answer

  864. is that

  865. I am

  866. merely

  867. a private

  868. individual

  869. against whom

  870. you may

  871. have offended

  872. or sinned.

  873. I'm a

  874. fellow sinner

  875. and the

  876. arrangement

  877. that comes

  878. between you

  879. and I

  880. affects

  881. no one

  882. but ourselves

  883. and so I

  884. may say

  885. to you

  886. I forgive

  887. you and

  888. there's

  889. nothing

  890. there's

  891. no more

  892. to that

  893. and you

  894. might say

  895. the same

  896. to me

  897. but when

  898. we sin

  899. against God

  900. let me ask

  901. that you

  902. get this

  903. really

  904. really

  905. clear

  906. when you

  907. sin against

  908. God

  909. you do

  910. not sin

  911. against

  912. God

  913. as though

  914. he were

  915. a person

  916. like you

  917. a private

  918. individual

  919. like ourselves

  920. it's a

  921. verse

  922. little phrase

  923. in Psalm

    Psalms 50:21

  924. 50 verse

  925. 21

  926. and the

  927. psalmist

  928. says this

  929. where God

  930. says this

  931. he says

  932. you thought

  933. that I was

  934. one like

  935. yourself

  936. you thought

  937. that I was

  938. one like

  939. yourself

  940. in many

  941. ways

  942. that is

  943. the great

  944. sin

  945. of the

  946. Christian

  947. church

  948. in the

  949. UK

  950. and that

  951. we think

  952. that God

  953. is just

  954. a bit

  955. of a

  956. glorified

  957. version

  958. of

  959. ourselves

  960. a bit

  961. bigger

  962. a bit

  963. better

  964. maybe not

  965. better

  966. but a bit

  967. bigger

  968. you thought

  969. that I was

  970. one like

  971. yourself

  972. but God

  973. is the

  974. sovereign

  975. Lord

  976. of the

  977. universe

  978. and in

  979. his being

  980. and in

  981. his nature

  982. he is

  983. perfectly

  984. holy

  985. different

  986. other

  987. and

  988. perfectly

  989. righteous

  990. utterly

  991. holy

  992. and an

  993. offense

  994. against

  995. God

  996. and his

  997. law

  998. is an

  999. offense

  1000. against

  1001. the

  1002. character

  1003. and the

  1004. holiness

  1005. of God

  1006. and it

  1007. is an

  1008. offense

  1009. against

  1010. the

  1011. moral

  1012. structure

  1013. of the

  1014. universe

  1015. it's

  1016. difficult

  1017. to illustrate

  1018. this

  1019. you get

  1020. a shadow

  1021. of it

  1022. a faint

  1023. shadow

  1024. and this

  1025. is not

  1026. a perfect

  1027. illustration

  1028. but you

  1029. think of

  1030. a judge

  1031. in

  1032. court

  1033. there's

  1034. somebody

  1035. brought

  1036. before

  1037. the

  1038. court

  1039. who

  1040. has

  1041. committed

  1042. a

  1043. terrible

  1044. and

  1045. horrific

  1046. crime

  1047. he's

  1048. hearing

  1049. a

  1050. terrible

  1051. terrible

  1052. case

  1053. this

  1054. judge

  1055. but it

  1056. is

  1057. summing up

  1058. he says

  1059. listen

  1060. it is

  1061. August

  1062. it's

  1063. holiday

  1064. time

  1065. the

  1066. sun

  1067. is

  1068. shining

  1069. let's

  1070. just

  1071. forget

  1072. about

  1073. you

  1074. can

  1075. go

  1076. free

  1077. and I

  1078. forgive

  1079. you

  1080. what

  1081. has

  1082. just

  1083. happened

  1084. what

  1085. would

  1086. happen

  1087. there

  1088. would

  1089. be

  1090. up

  1091. there

  1092. would

  1093. be

  1094. up

  1095. someone

  1096. was

  1097. raped

  1098. and

  1099. battered

  1100. a

  1101. woman

  1102. and

  1103. the

  1104. judge

  1105. says

  1106. just

  1107. go

  1108. free

  1109. he

  1110. cannot

  1111. do

  1112. that

  1113. can

  1114. he

  1115. because

  1116. the

  1117. offense

  1118. is

  1119. not

  1120. merely

  1121. an

  1122. offense

  1123. against

  1124. him

  1125. as

  1126. an

  1127. individual

  1128. it

  1129. is

  1130. an

  1131. offense

  1132. against

  1133. the

  1134. legal

  1135. structure

  1136. of

  1137. the

  1138. land

  1139. you

  1140. get

  1141. a

  1142. measure

  1143. of

  1144. that

  1145. but

  1146. you

  1147. multiply

  1148. that

  1149. by

  1150. infinity

  1151. and

  1152. grasp

  1153. what it

  1154. means

  1155. for

  1156. God

  1157. in

  1158. his

  1159. holiness

  1160. to

  1161. associate

  1162. with

  1163. sin

  1164. to

  1165. associate

  1166. with

  1167. sin

  1168. unless

  1169. it

  1170. has

  1171. been

  1172. dealt

  1173. with

  1174. grasp

  1175. the

  1176. problem

  1177. that

  1178. God

  1179. faces

  1180. grasp

  1181. God's

  1182. most

  1183. profound

  1184. dilemma

  1185. how

  1186. can

  1187. he

  1188. be

  1189. as

  1190. the

  1191. apostle

  1192. Paul

  1193. puts it

  1194. in other

  1195. places

  1196. just

  1197. and

  1198. the

  1199. justifier

  1200. how

  1201. can

  1202. he

  1203. be

  1204. the

  1205. acquitter

  1206. of

  1207. those

  1208. who

  1209. put

  1210. their

  1211. trust

  1212. in

  1213. his

  1214. son

  1215. how

  1216. does

  1217. he

  1218. do

  1219. that

  1220. he

  1221. does

  1222. it

  1223. by

  1224. himself

  1225. he

  1226. gives

  1227. the

  1228. ultimate

  1229. price

  1230. by

  1231. paying

  1232. the

  1233. full

  1234. price

  1235. of

  1236. our

  1237. redemption

  1238. by

  1239. the

  1240. blood

  1241. of

  1242. his

  1243. son

  1244. his

  1245. only

  1246. son

  1247. he

  1248. does

  1249. it

  1250. by

  1251. pouring

  1252. out

  1253. his

  1254. judgment

  1255. on

  1256. his

  1257. son

  1258. in

  1259. order

  1260. that

  1261. you

  1262. and I

  1263. might

  1264. be

  1265. redeemed

  1266. by

  1267. that

  1268. blood

  1269. that's

  1270. the

  1271. means

  1272. of

  1273. redemption

  1274. !

  1275. Now

  1276. what's

  1277. the

  1278. outcome

  1279. of it?

  1280. This

  1281. is

  1282. the

  1283. last

  1284. point

  1285. in

  1286. fact

  1287. let

  1288. me

  1289. give

  1290. you

  1291. the

  1292. seventh

  1293. point

  1294. we're

  1295. not

  1296. too

  1297. bad

  1298. on

  1299. time

  1300. alright

  1301. the

  1302. means

  1303. of

  1304. redemption

  1305. the

  1306. outcome

  1307. of

  1308. redemption

  1309. let

  1310. me

  1311. give

  1312. you

  1313. the

  1314. seventh

  1315. point

  1316. it's

  1317. the

  1318. assurance

  1319. of

  1320. redemption

  1321. the

  1322. wonder

  1323. of what

  1324. I'm

  1325. talking

  1326. about

  1327. this

  1328. morning

  1329. is

  1330. this

  1331. isn't

  1332. something

  1333. that

  1334. we

  1335. hope

  1336. we

  1337. might

  1338. have

  1339. this

  1340. isn't

  1341. something

  1342. that we

  1343. can

  1344. say

  1345. well

  1346. at

  1347. the

  1348. end

  1349. of

  1350. life

  1351. I

  1352. hope

  1353. this

  1354. will

  1355. be

  1356. we

  1357. can

  1358. say

  1359. it

  1360. here

  1361. and

  1362. now

  1363. in

  1364. him

  1365. do you

  1366. see

  1367. the

  1368. tenses

  1369. we

  1370. have

  1371. redemption

  1372. in

  1373. him

  1374. we

  1375. have

  1376. redemption

  1377. there's

  1378. an

  1379. absolute

  1380. certainty

  1381. isn't

  1382. there

  1383. what's

  1384. the

  1385. outcome

  1386. of it

  1387. this

  1388. last

  1389. point

  1390. the

  1391. outcome

  1392. is

  1393. this

  1394. that

  1395. in

  1396. him

  1397. we

  1398. have

  1399. deliverance

  1400. from

  1401. sins

  1402. bondage

  1403. we

  1404. have

  1405. forgiveness

  1406. of

  1407. sins

  1408. from

  1409. sins

  1410. guilt

  1411. in

  1412. other

  1413. words

  1414. this

  1415. we

  1416. are

  1417. free

  1418. we

  1419. are

  1420. free

  1421. in

  1422. the

  1423. deepest

  1424. most

  1425. glorious

  1426. sense

  1427. possible

  1428. and that

  1429. is the

  1430. freedom

  1431. that

  1432. we

  1433. desperately

  1434. need

  1435. but I

  1436. want to

  1437. finish by

  1438. pointing out

  1439. to you that

  1440. when the

  1441. new

  1442. testament

  1443. speaks about

  1444. redemption

  1445. and we

  1446. are free

  1447. we are

  1448. also

  1449. slaves

  1450. we are

  1451. free and yet

  1452. we're also

  1453. slaves when

  1454. we've been

  1455. redeemed

  1456. you are

  1457. redeemed

  1458. says the

  1459. apostle

  1460. do you

  1461. not know

  1462. that you

  1463. have been

  1464. redeemed

  1465. and you

  1466. are not

  1467. your own

  1468. you've been

  1469. bought with a

  1470. price

  1471. and so the

  1472. result of the

  1473. outcome of

  1474. redemption is

  1475. this it is

  1476. freedom and

  1477. slavery

  1478. freedom from

  1479. sin and all

  1480. its punishments

  1481. and all that it

  1482. does to us

  1483. but slavery

  1484. to Jesus

  1485. Christ

  1486. and the

  1487. glorious

  1488. paradox of

  1489. living as a

  1490. Christian of

  1491. living the

  1492. redeemed

  1493. people is

  1494. this we

  1495. are free

  1496. slaves and

  1497. in the

  1498. service of

  1499. Jesus Christ

  1500. there is

  1501. perfect

  1502. freedom and

  1503. so we live in

  1504. a culture

  1505. which is

  1506. desperate to

  1507. be free

  1508. desperate to

  1509. find freedom

  1510. and the

  1511. truth is

  1512. this it is

  1513. to be found

  1514. in nowhere

  1515. else this

  1516. morning in

  1517. this universe

  1518. than in

  1519. glad

  1520. bondage to

  1521. Jesus Christ

  1522. that's where

  1523. freedom is

  1524. found

  1525. freedom is

  1526. found in

  1527. being enslaved

  1528. to Jesus

  1529. in glad

  1530. bondage to

  1531. Jesus Christ

  1532. who has

  1533. bought us

  1534. at such a

  1535. price

  1536. and so our

  1537. children who

  1538. are here this

  1539. morning who

  1540. go back to

  1541. school this

  1542. week and

  1543. our teenagers

  1544. who go back to

  1545. school this

  1546. week I want to

  1547. say to you

  1548. this I want to

  1549. say to you

  1550. remember who

  1551. you are

  1552. when you leave

  1553. the house on

  1554. Tuesday or

  1555. Wednesday morning

  1556. remember who

  1557. you are

  1558. you have been

  1559. redeemed

  1560. you are not

  1561. your own

  1562. you belong to

  1563. Jesus Christ

  1564. you are free

  1565. free to serve

  1566. him

  1567. we have

  1568. people leaving

  1569. us going for

  1570. a year out

  1571. starting out as

  1572. students let me

  1573. speak to you

  1574. and I want to

  1575. say this to

  1576. you remember

  1577. that in the

  1578. service of

  1579. Jesus Christ

  1580. there is

  1581. perfect freedom

  1582. you'll be free

  1583. from your

  1584. parents

  1585. but in the

  1586. service of

  1587. Jesus Christ

  1588. is perfect

  1589. freedom that is

  1590. where you'll find

  1591. freedom

  1592. you'll find

  1593. freedom in

  1594. giving yourself

  1595. to serving

  1596. Jesus Christ

  1597. and his

  1598. people

  1599. and for all

  1600. of us who've

  1601. trusted in

  1602. Jesus Christ

  1603. for all of us

  1604. who've been

  1605. redeemed do you

  1606. realise what's

  1607. happened to

  1608. you

  1609. do you not

  1610. know that

  1611. you've been

  1612. redeemed

  1613. you are not

  1614. your own

  1615. you are

  1616. forgiven

  1617. you are

  1618. free

  1619. and so

  1620. live like

  1621. it

  1622. what about

  1623. under the

  1624. preaching of

  1625. God's word

  1626. this morning

  1627. you have

  1628. realised that

  1629. you are not

  1630. savingly attached

  1631. to the Lord

  1632. Jesus Christ

  1633. your faith is

  1634. not in him

  1635. you're not

  1636. resting in him

  1637. you're not

  1638. relying on him

  1639. and you are

  1640. not redeemed

  1641. what is your

  1642. problem

  1643. what is your

  1644. problem

  1645. it is this

  1646. your greatest

  1647. problem

  1648. is that

  1649. you're not

  1650. forgiven

  1651. and you're

  1652. in bondage

  1653. to sin

  1654. and you've

  1655. not been

  1656. redeemed

  1657. why stay

  1658. like that

  1659. why stay

  1660. like that

  1661. this morning

  1662. why not

  1663. come in

  1664. humility

  1665. to the

  1666. one person

  1667. who can

  1668. deal with

  1669. your greatest

  1670. problem

  1671. the Lord

  1672. Jesus Christ

  1673. who offers

  1674. you full

  1675. forgiveness

  1676. and freedom

  1677. from your

  1678. guilt

  1679. and you

  1680. can cry

  1681. to him

  1682. from where

  1683. you are

  1684. you don't

  1685. need to

  1686. do anything

  1687. you can

  1688. admit to

  1689. your guilt

  1690. you can

  1691. be honest

  1692. before him

  1693. and you

  1694. can ask him

  1695. to forgive

  1696. you

  1697. and you

  1698. can rejoice

  1699. that Jesus

  1700. Christ has

  1701. come into

  1702. this world

  1703. to save

  1704. sinners

  1705. like we

  1706. heard in

  1707. our

  1708. assurance

  1709. of pardon

  1710. and he

  1711. will redeem

  1712. you

  1713. let's

  1714. rest in

  1715. him

  1716. and rely

  1717. on him

  1718. let's pray

  1719. together

  1720. let's종

  1721. Thank you.
