  1. Again to Genesis 4.

  2. If you are at Swansea, we are continuing our series.

  3. !

  4. If you weren't in Swansea, go ask someone in Swansea what they learnt.

  5. !

  6. Genesis 4.

  7. A man named McAllister Hull.

  8. He was one of the American physicists who helped develop the atomic bomb

  9. that was eventually dropped over the Japanese city of Nagasaki in 1945.

  10. And when the bomb dropped and detonated, it killed around 40,000 people in an instant.

  11. And McAllister Hull, he was interviewed years later in 1995.

  12. And he was asked, what was it like for you as soon as the bomb dropped?

  13. What are your reflections on that moment as soon as the bomb dropped?

  14. And he said this in the interview.

  15. He said, immediately, both of us who knew the score began to think,

  16. okay, what have we done?

  17. What have we done?

  18. And it's that same thought, that same question,

  19. that is lingering in the air after Genesis 3.

  20. Adam has just eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  21. He severed mankind's relationship with God.

  22. He's brought sin and death into this world.

  23. God has cursed this world and humanity,

  24. thrown Adam and Eve out of the garden,

  25. out of his presence, east of Eden, and shut the door.

  26. And now the question lingers in the air.

  27. What have we done?

  28. What is the world like now?

  29. What is humanity like now?

  30. What's going to be the fallout of this bomb that Adam's detonated?

  31. And Genesis 4 to 11, it's here to answer that question.

  32. What have we done?

  33. What is the world like now?

  34. As Adam and Eve are thrown out of the garden to the east of Eden,

  35. Genesis 4 onwards, it's here to show us what life is like east of Eden.

  36. What the world, what humanity is now like.

  37. And that is deeply relevant for us now.

  38. Because we are still east of Eden.

  39. And so these chapters are an insight into what we are now east of Eden.

  40. What sin is like, what the world is like.

  41. And so if Adam detonated a sin bomb,

  42. then it's like this whole world has become radioactive.

  43. And Genesis 4 to 11, it's like a guide showing you

  44. how to dodge the radiation of this world.

  45. And so as we go through these chapters over the next few weeks,

  46. I want you to be like a detective.

  47. And I want you to get your magnifying glass out.

  48. And I want you to spot what these chapters have to say about sin.

  49. But that's not the only thing that we should look out for.

  50. Radiation isn't the only thing we should expect after the fall.

  51. Because chapter 3, it ends with a promise.

  52. Look back to Genesis 3.15.

  53. Just Genesis 3.15.

  54. God, he promises something to the serpent, to Satan.

  55. He says, I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  56. between your offspring and her offspring.

  57. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.

  58. This is God's promise to Satan and to us

  59. that this world won't be completely consumed by sin.

  60. Radiation won't completely wipe out this world.

  61. Humanity is not going to be completely abandoned by God.

  62. Yes, as we leave this garden and as we head east,

  63. yes, we go ahead into this world, into our lives with sin,

  64. but we also go with God's promise.

  65. A promise that God will put enmity between Satan and the woman.

  66. A promise that they won't be friends.

  67. Instead, she's going to be friends with God.

  68. And also, do you see, God promises that there'll be two families in this world.

  69. The offspring, the children of Satan,

  70. and the offspring, the children of Eve.

  71. Two families.

  72. And God promises that these two families are going to be at war.

  73. Do you see?

  74. I will put enmity between your offspring and her offspring.

  75. Now, the offspring of Satan,

  76. this isn't talking about little demons running around this world.

  77. No, this is talking about humans who will follow Satan.

  78. It's talking about unbelievers.

  79. That's what Jesus calls those who reject him.

  80. He says, you are of your father, the devil.

  81. And Paul says this in Ephesians.

  82. Do you remember when we were in Ephesians?

  83. Before conversion, we are following the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  84. And here in Genesis 3.15,

  85. God promises that there will be a family,

  86. a group of people in this world,

  87. who in their unbelief will belong to Satan.

  88. Which shouldn't be a surprise after the fall.

  89. But what is a surprise,

  90. is that God promises another family.

  91. The offspring of the woman.

  92. And that family, that group of people,

  93. will have enmity, opposition,

  94. against Satan's family.

  95. This is a promise that there will be believers in this world.

  96. People who are friends with God.

  97. And that family is going to be at war with Satan's family.

  98. Two families at war in this world.

  99. That this is the promise that God will build his church.

  100. And on top of that,

  101. God promises, did you see,

  102. that through Eve, through this believing family,

  103. there will come one offspring.

  104. One child, one man, a son.

  105. And he will come to bruise Satan's head.

  106. To crush him.

  107. A son to end evil in this world.

  108. He shall bruise your head, Satan.

  109. This is God's promise to have a people.

  110. And from that people, there will be a son.

  111. And that son will save the world.

  112. And so we leave Genesis 3 on a cliffhanger.

  113. Who is this son going to be?

  114. And when is he coming?

  115. And so, yes, we enter Genesis 4.

  116. We head into the east of Eden,

  117. and asking, what have we done?

  118. But we also go out asking,

  119. but what is God about to do?

  120. And so the story we're in now in Genesis,

  121. it's the story of sin and a son.

  122. We are to enter these chapters and head east

  123. with our magnifying glass out,

  124. looking for two things,

  125. sin and a son.

  126. What have we done?

  127. What is sin like?

  128. And what is God about to do?

  129. Where is this son?

  130. So if you want to understand what this world is,

  131. who we are,

  132. what God is doing here in history,

  133. then listen closely to Genesis.

  134. And so let's leave the gates of the Garden of Eden,

  135. head east,

  136. with our magnifying glasses out,

  137. looking out for those two things,

  138. and let's see what we find.

  139. And the first thing we come across

  140. is that God is doing just as he promised.

  141. God is creating two families.

  142. That's my first point today.

  143. God is creating two families.

  144. So we're expecting sin and a son.

  145. And how does Genesis 4 begin?

  146. It's a promising start.

  147. There's a son, verse 1.

  148. Now Adam knew Eve, his wife,

  149. and she conceived and bore Cain.

  150. And Eve knows that this is no ordinary birth.

  151. She says,

  152. I've produced a man with the help of the Lord.

  153. She has this promise in her mind

  154. that this is a woman clinging to God's promise.

  155. And as she holds her son,

  156. she knows God is keeping his promise.

  157. But there's also another son, verse 2,

  158. Abel.

  159. Two sons, Cain and Abel.

  160. So if we have our magnifying glasses,

  161. and we're looking for a son,

  162. then this is a promising start east of Eden.

  163. Maybe, maybe the serpent crusher is here.

  164. But we see

  165. these brothers aren't alike.

  166. There's a deep difference between them.

  167. And that difference,

  168. it shows up in worship.

  169. So Cain,

  170. he's a fruit and vegetable farmer.

  171. And Abel,

  172. he's a shepherd.

  173. He's got sheep.

  174. And we see,

  175. even from the beginning,

  176. humanity is worshipping God.

  177. These two sons bring offering sacrifices to the Lord.

  178. Cain brings his fruits,

  179. and Abel brings the best of his sheep.

  180. But the Lord isn't happy with one of them,

  181. verse 4.

  182. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering.

  183. But for Cain and his offering,

  184. he had no regard.

  185. The Lord delights in Abel,

  186. but Cain he isn't happy with.

  187. Now, we aren't told why here explicitly,

  188. but the New Testament,

  189. it gives us an insight.

  190. The book of Hebrews says this,

  191. about Cain and Abel.

  192. It says,

  193. by faith,

  194. Abel offered to God

  195. a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  196. The difference is not that one brother

  197. is more impressive than the other.

  198. Abel isn't more likable than Cain in God's eyes.

  199. Abel hasn't earned God's favour in some way.

  200. No.

  201. The difference,

  202. the key,

  203. is faith.

  204. One son trusts in the Lord,

  205. knows that God is worthy,

  206. knows that the Lord is to be feared and served,

  207. and the other son doesn't.

  208. And you can even see that in their offerings.

  209. Did you notice,

  210. Abel,

  211. he offers his firstborn sheep,

  212. the most precious of his animals,

  213. the best of his meat,

  214. the fattest bits.

  215. But look what it says Cain brings.

  216. It just says,

  217. an offering of the fruit of the ground.

  218. It's not the best he has.

  219. There's no mention of anything special here.

  220. It's like Cain kind of rummages around in his stock,

  221. around just trying to find something.

  222. Oh yeah,

  223. here you go God,

  224. that there's something I've got.

  225. Yeah,

  226. there's a bit of fruit.

  227. And the Lord isn't happy.

  228. And not because God is happy with a leg of lamb,

  229. rather than with apples.

  230. No,

  231. it's because one son worships with faith,

  232. and the other doesn't.

  233. One loves the Lord,

  234. and thinks he's worthy of everything,

  235. and trusts in his God,

  236. and the other doesn't.

  237. And the difference in their offerings,

  238. it just reflects that faith.

  239. And so,

  240. five verses in,

  241. and we see,

  242. God's promise is already coming true.

  243. We see,

  244. God is creating two types of people here,

  245. two families,

  246. a family of faith,

  247. and a family of unbelief.

  248. And this is how the world is divided east of Eden.

  249. There are those who know God is worthy,

  250. who know it is a good thing to serve him,

  251. who know God is so great,

  252. he demands my soul,

  253. my life,

  254. my all.

  255. Abel knew that.

  256. And there are those who think,

  257. how they live before God,

  258. how they approach him,

  259. what they give to him,

  260. they think it doesn't matter.

  261. That God should be happy,

  262. with whatever we do,

  263. and however we live.

  264. Even if we just give him the scraps of our life,

  265. that's Cain.

  266. And that's the unbelief of this world.

  267. People are existing before God,

  268. and thinking,

  269. God should be happy with them,

  270. just the way they are.

  271. They don't think about him,

  272. or love him,

  273. or give him the time of day,

  274. but they give him scraps.

  275. And God isn't happy.

  276. Because God doesn't want your scraps.

  277. He wants your heart.

  278. He wants you to have faith in him.

  279. God delights when you have faith in him.

  280. And so it should make us think,

  281. am I giving God the best of my life?

  282. Or am I giving him my scraps?

  283. And how does Cain react to all this?

  284. Verse 5.

  285. He's fuming.

  286. He hates it.

  287. He hates that God isn't happy with him.

  288. He hates that he can't approach God how he wants.

  289. He hates that God deserves so much.

  290. He hates that Abel's right with God,

  291. but he isn't.

  292. And he's fuming.

  293. He's filled with anger and jealousy.

  294. And God asks him a piercing question.

  295. Why?

  296. Why are you so angry, Cain?

  297. Why are you so angry with me

  298. and with your believing brother?

  299. Come on, if you just trusted me,

  300. you'll always be accepted.

  301. Why are you so angry?

  302. It's a probing question to unbelief.

  303. It's a bit like, have you heard this?

  304. You know when an unbeliever gets so angry

  305. about the idea they're going to hell,

  306. even though they don't believe in it.

  307. It's like that.

  308. Why are you so angry?

  309. What's going on in your heart there?

  310. Well, God provides the answer to that.

  311. He tells Cain what's really going on inside of him.

  312. Verse 7.

  313. Sin is crouching at the door.

  314. Its desire is for you,

  315. but you must rule over it.

  316. Why is Cain so angry,

  317. so angry with God?

  318. It's sin.

  319. And do you see the picture God gives?

  320. Sin is like a beast.

  321. Sin is like a monster.

  322. A crouching monster ready to pounce.

  323. Ready to devour and tear apart.

  324. And it's crouching just by your front door.

  325. So if your life in your heart is like a home,

  326. the monster of sin,

  327. it's crouching just at the door,

  328. ready to sneak in and devour you.

  329. And it's desire,

  330. it's appetite,

  331. is for you.

  332. And so in this world,

  333. east of Eden,

  334. this is what life is like now.

  335. That there is a powerful force.

  336. That there's a monster at play in this world.

  337. But it's not out there.

  338. It's not a talking serpent out there anymore.

  339. No, it's in here.

  340. Sin is crouching at the door

  341. of each and every heart here.

  342. When Bethany and I lived in America,

  343. we went on holiday to the mountains

  344. in North Carolina.

  345. And the one thing that we were told

  346. to watch out for is bears.

  347. If you're going hiking,

  348. watch out for bears.

  349. The one thing you do not mess with

  350. is a bear.

  351. Well, this is like,

  352. God is telling us,

  353. as we head out of the garden,

  354. as we live east of Eden,

  355. this is the one thing

  356. you need to watch out for.

  357. Sin is crouching at your door.

  358. And so God says,

  359. you must rule over sin.

  360. Otherwise, it will rule over you.

  361. Because when you let it in,

  362. look at Cain.

  363. It becomes anger

  364. and jealousy

  365. and bitterness

  366. and it devours you.

  367. And we can see that in our lives.

  368. We saw it this morning with Naomi.

  369. You start grumbling.

  370. You open the door

  371. to a little bit of that grumbling

  372. and sin pounces in,

  373. devours you,

  374. and before you know it,

  375. your whole life

  376. becomes a life of complaining

  377. and bitterness

  378. and anger towards God.

  379. You let one lustful thought in.

  380. You entertain that.

  381. You welcome that through the door.

  382. And it takes over your mind

  383. and it's all you can think about

  384. all day.

  385. And so as we head east,

  386. what have we done?

  387. This is what we've done.

  388. This is the human heart now.

  389. And so pick up your magnifying glass.

  390. We find a son,

  391. two sons.

  392. It's a promising start.

  393. But we also find a monster,

  394. sin.

  395. And that monster

  396. has devoured

  397. one of the sons.

  398. God has created two families,

  399. a family of faith

  400. and a family of unbelief.

  401. And as we go on,

  402. we find east of Eden,

  403. not only do these two families exist,

  404. but these two families

  405. are at war.

  406. That's my second point today.

  407. These two families

  408. are at war.

  409. So remember,

  410. God promises conflicts

  411. between these two families.

  412. And this is what we see

  413. because what happens next,

  414. verse 8,

  415. Cain meets Abel in a field,

  416. rises up against Abel

  417. and kills him.

  418. Sin really does devour, doesn't it?

  419. It began with an angry thought

  420. and it ends with blood

  421. spilled in a field.

  422. If you, kids,

  423. if you went to Holiday Bible Club,

  424. do you remember one of the lessons?

  425. Wrong thoughts

  426. lead to wrong words

  427. and wrong actions.

  428. This is exactly

  429. what happened with Cain.

  430. From an angry thought

  431. to the first murder

  432. in human history.

  433. And so,

  434. this is a stark warning

  435. to us.

  436. If you are angry

  437. with someone right now,

  438. if you are jealous,

  439. if a thought like that

  440. is lingering in your head,

  441. if sin is crouching,

  442. don't let it rule you.

  443. Confess that anger

  444. to the Lord right now.

  445. Put that anger to death.

  446. Because we can't think

  447. we're better than Cain.

  448. No.

  449. We all have the capacity

  450. to be like Cain.

  451. This is why people

  452. get shot on campuses.

  453. This is why we have

  454. blood splatter analysis.

  455. This is life

  456. east of Eden now.

  457. And so God asks Cain,

  458. he asks him,

  459. where is Abel,

  460. your brother?

  461. And does this question

  462. remind you of something?

  463. It's like God asking Adam,

  464. where are you?

  465. after he ate the fruit.

  466. Sin always has a way

  467. of repeating itself.

  468. And how does Cain respond?

  469. Don't ask me.

  470. My brother's nothing

  471. to do with me.

  472. Just like Adam,

  473. he tries to cover his tracks.

  474. But God knows

  475. our secret sins.

  476. Cain can't hide this body.

  477. And so God asks the question,

  478. still lingering in the air,

  479. Cain,

  480. what have you done?

  481. Cain,

  482. what have you done

  483. that the voice

  484. of your brother's blood

  485. is crying to me

  486. from the ground?

  487. It's like the wrongness,

  488. the injustice,

  489. the horror

  490. of Abel's murder.

  491. It's such an affront

  492. to God's creation,

  493. so heinous

  494. to the God of life.

  495. It's like Abel's blood

  496. has seeped into the soil

  497. and you can put your ear

  498. to the soil

  499. and you can still hear

  500. the screams.

  501. Creation,

  502. it's like it's vibrating

  503. with injustice.

  504. And so God

  505. is very clear

  506. about how he feels

  507. about murder.

  508. God hates murder.

  509. God cannot

  510. forget

  511. or ignore

  512. the blood

  513. spilled

  514. this side of Eden.

  515. The blood

  516. on that Utah campus

  517. cries out

  518. to God.

  519. The blood

  520. on the streets

  521. of London

  522. cries out

  523. to God.

  524. The blood

  525. of the unborn

  526. cries out

  527. to God.

  528. And it cries,

  529. not just generally,

  530. it cries

  531. to God.

  532. And this,

  533. this is actually

  534. a great comfort

  535. for every family member

  536. of someone

  537. who's been murdered.

  538. God hears

  539. those cries

  540. and it matters

  541. to him

  542. and he will

  543. answer those cries

  544. on judgment day.

  545. But remember,

  546. remember who

  547. this feud

  548. is between.

  549. God has created

  550. two families

  551. and God promises

  552. these two families

  553. will be at war.

  554. God's family

  555. and Satan's family.

  556. And here is

  557. the war.

  558. And so

  559. this is not only

  560. the murder

  561. of one human

  562. by another.

  563. No,

  564. this is

  565. an attack

  566. on God's people.

  567. that this is

  568. an act

  569. of persecution

  570. against the church.

  571. This is

  572. spiritual warfare

  573. in action.

  574. But why?

  575. Why does there

  576. have to be

  577. a conflict

  578. like this?

  579. Why does

  580. Satan's family

  581. have to be

  582. against the family

  583. of faith?

  584. Well,

  585. remember,

  586. who is coming

  587. from this family

  588. of faith?

  589. The serpent

  590. crusher.

  591. So,

  592. if you were

  593. Satan

  594. and you knew

  595. the saviour

  596. is coming

  597. from God's

  598. family,

  599. what would

  600. you want

  601. to do?

  602. You want

  603. to end

  604. that family.

  605. Kill it.

  606. End any hope

  607. of the serpent

  608. crusher coming.

  609. And that's

  610. what Satan

  611. is orchestrating

  612. here.

  613. He's out

  614. to stop

  615. the son.

  616. He's out

  617. to end

  618. the church.

  619. So,

  620. not just

  621. blood,

  622. but the

  623. blood of

  624. martyrs

  625. particularly

  626. cries out

  627. to God.

  628. God has

  629. promised that

  630. from the

  631. beginning.

  632. He's

  633. promised

  634. that God's

  635. people

  636. won't be

  637. welcome here

  638. east of Eden.

  639. We won't

  640. be at home.

  641. The church,

  642. it's going

  643. to be at

  644. war with

  645. the world.

  646. Godliness

  647. is going

  648. to be

  649. opposed

  650. by evil.

  651. And it

  652. began here

  653. with Abel.

  654. It continues

  655. with Abraham.

  656. We saw

  657. it in

  658. Holiday

  659. Bible

  660. Club

  661. with

  662. Joseph,

  663. brother

  664. against

  665. brother.

  666. You see

  667. it with

  668. Israel

  669. and Babylon.

  670. And you

  671. see it

  672. with Christ

  673. on the

  674. cross.

  675. The serpent

  676. crusher

  677. finally came

  678. and Satan's

  679. family had

  680. to kill him.

  681. And in fact,

  682. you see it

  683. before the

  684. cross.

  685. Think,

  686. who tried

  687. to kill

  688. Jesus

  689. as a

  690. baby?

  691. Herod,

  692. a fellow

  693. Jew,

  694. his own

  695. brother.

  696. History

  697. is the

  698. story of

  699. these two

  700. families at

  701. war.

  702. So get

  703. your magnifying

  704. glass out.

  705. East of

  706. Eden,

  707. there is

  708. sin and

  709. there is

  710. a son.

  711. But sin

  712. wants to

  713. destroy that

  714. son.

  715. And this

  716. is why

  717. the church

  718. faces such

  719. opposition

  720. today.

  721. This is

  722. why being

  723. a Christian

  724. and actually

  725. standing up

  726. for godliness

  727. at work

  728. or at

  729. school,

  730. even within

  731. your own

  732. family,

  733. this is

  734. why it

  735. exists.

  736. Satan

  737. can't

  738. stop the

  739. serpent

  740. crusher

  741. anymore.

  742. And so

  743. he goes

  744. for the

  745. people.

  746. And he

  747. tries to

  748. scare us

  749. away from

  750. following

  751. this son.

  752. And so

  753. realize,

  754. realize what's

  755. going on

  756. in your

  757. life and

  758. at school

  759. and at

  760. work.

  761. It really,

  762. it's a

  763. spiritual

  764. warfare out

  765. there.

  766. But we

  767. can take

  768. comfort that

  769. this isn't

  770. something new.

  771. This isn't

  772. a surprise.

  773. Back in the

  774. garden,

  775. God promised

  776. you will

  777. belong to

  778. this family.

  779. family.

  780. And you

  781. will be

  782. at war.

  783. We might

  784. ask why.

  785. Why is

  786. God creating

  787. his own

  788. family and

  789. then putting

  790. us through

  791. this?

  792. Well, I

  793. want to see

  794. that this

  795. war is

  796. actually a

  797. good thing.

  798. To feel

  799. persecution,

  800. it's actually

  801. a good sign

  802. because it

  803. means we

  804. aren't in

  805. Satan's

  806. family.

  807. God has

  808. set you

  809. apart and

  810. brought you

  811. into his

  812. family.

  813. And so,

  814. to feel

  815. uncomfortable

  816. in this

  817. world,

  818. to be

  819. hated

  820. even by

  821. your own

  822. brother,

  823. it means

  824. you belong

  825. to something

  826. special.

  827. Blessed are

  828. those who

  829. are persecuted

  830. for righteousness

  831. sake,

  832. for theirs

  833. is the

  834. kingdom of

  835. heaven.

  836. Abel died

  837. in a

  838. field,

  839. but he

  840. will rise

  841. again in

  842. a kingdom.

  843. And

  844. brothers and

  845. sisters,

  846. so will

  847. we.

  848. But the

  849. drama isn't

  850. over.

  851. God spares

  852. Cain's

  853. life.

  854. God is

  855. merciful even

  856. to murderers.

  857. But Cain,

  858. he isn't the

  859. promised son.

  860. This isn't the

  861. promised family.

  862. In fact,

  863. it looks like

  864. there's no

  865. family at all

  866. anymore.

  867. Like the

  868. promise has

  869. been killed.

  870. It's died

  871. with Abel.

  872. Like Satan,

  873. he's won

  874. here in

  875. chapter 4.

  876. Like sin

  877. is too

  878. fierce a

  879. monster this

  880. side of

  881. Eden.

  882. It often

  883. feels like

  884. that in

  885. persecution.

  886. It feels

  887. like that in

  888. life.

  889. And so

  890. how will

  891. God's

  892. promise win?

  893. Well,

  894. keep your

  895. magnifying

  896. glass out

  897. and keep

  898. looking for

  899. sin and

  900. a son.

  901. Because next,

  902. the final

  903. thing,

  904. the monster

  905. is big.

  906. God is

  907. bigger.

  908. It's the

  909. final point.

  910. The monster

  911. is big,

  912. but God

  913. is bigger.

  914. After Abel's

  915. murder,

  916. it looks like

  917. sin is one.

  918. And then to

  919. pour salt in

  920. the wound,

  921. if you keep

  922. going,

  923. it looks like

  924. the problem,

  925. it's actually

  926. only got worse.

  927. We follow

  928. Cain's family

  929. line.

  930. And by the

  931. way,

  932. Adam and

  933. Eve had

  934. other daughters,

  935. and so if you're

  936. wondering who did

  937. Cain marry,

  938. there you go.

  939. And so we

  940. follow the

  941. family tree,

  942. and we end

  943. up at

  944. Lamech.

  945. And Lamech

  946. seems to be

  947. even worse

  948. than Cain.

  949. And in

  950. verse 23,

  951. this is actually

  952. a song.

  953. He sings a

  954. song about

  955. something he's

  956. done.

  957. What does he

  958. sing?

  959. I have

  960. killed a

  961. man for

  962. wounding me,

  963. a young

  964. man for

  965. striking me.

  966. murder runs

  967. in the

  968. family.

  969. But this

  970. time, look

  971. who he's

  972. killed, a

  973. young man.

  974. Well, the

  975. word, it

  976. actually means

  977. young boy.

  978. And he

  979. boasts about

  980. it at the

  981. end of the

  982. song.

  983. Cain got

  984. away with

  985. it, but

  986. I'm really

  987. going to get

  988. away with

  989. it.

  990. So he

  991. not only

  992. murders,

  993. he murders

  994. a boy,

  995. and then he

  996. boasts about

  997. it, and

  998. then sings

  999. a song about

  1000. it.

  1001. It's like

  1002. the monster

  1003. of sin.

  1004. It's

  1005. grown even

  1006. more just

  1007. a few

  1008. verses on.

  1009. Adam hid

  1010. when he

  1011. sinned, but

  1012. now Lamech is

  1013. singing about

  1014. it.

  1015. This side

  1016. of Eden,

  1017. we make

  1018. ourselves feel

  1019. better about

  1020. sin by

  1021. boasting

  1022. about it.

  1023. It's no

  1024. coincidence

  1025. pride is

  1026. called

  1027. pride.

  1028. And sin

  1029. really has

  1030. become a

  1031. giant monster.

  1032. It started

  1033. with a bite

  1034. of fruit in

  1035. the garden,

  1036. and now

  1037. it's

  1038. already

  1039. become

  1040. this.

  1041. This is

  1042. what we've

  1043. done.

  1044. And so

  1045. it looks

  1046. like this

  1047. world is

  1048. hopeless,

  1049. like the

  1050. promise has

  1051. ended.

  1052. That's how

  1053. we can

  1054. feel.

  1055. Like the

  1056. monster is

  1057. too big in

  1058. this world

  1059. to do

  1060. anything.

  1061. Or the

  1062. monster,

  1063. it's just

  1064. too big in

  1065. my life.

  1066. How can

  1067. I rule

  1068. over it?

  1069. But look

  1070. how this

  1071. chapter ends,

  1072. verse 25.

  1073. And Adam

  1074. knew his

  1075. wife again,

  1076. and she

  1077. bore a

  1078. son,

  1079. and called

  1080. his name

  1081. Seth.

  1082. For she

  1083. said,

  1084. God has

  1085. appointed for

  1086. me another

  1087. offspring instead

  1088. of Abel,

  1089. for Cain

  1090. killed him.

  1091. Another

  1092. son,

  1093. Seth.

  1094. And what

  1095. family does

  1096. he belong

  1097. to?

  1098. Verse 26.

  1099. At that

  1100. time,

  1101. people began

  1102. to call upon

  1103. the name of

  1104. the Lord.

  1105. it's a

  1106. believing

  1107. family.

  1108. The church

  1109. continues with

  1110. Seth.

  1111. The gates

  1112. of hell

  1113. did not

  1114. prevail.

  1115. And so,

  1116. east of

  1117. Eden is

  1118. dark.

  1119. It's

  1120. bloody.

  1121. Sin is a

  1122. big monster.

  1123. But listen

  1124. to this,

  1125. God is

  1126. bigger.

  1127. His grace

  1128. is brighter.

  1129. And even

  1130. through the

  1131. blood and

  1132. sin of

  1133. this world,

  1134. look what

  1135. he does.

  1136. He brings

  1137. a son.

  1138. He brings

  1139. a family.

  1140. And this

  1141. is what he

  1142. can do

  1143. with you.

  1144. However

  1145. hopeless

  1146. life feels

  1147. for you,

  1148. however

  1149. messy the

  1150. family that

  1151. you've come

  1152. from,

  1153. however big

  1154. the monster

  1155. inside of

  1156. you may

  1157. seem,

  1158. you need

  1159. to know

  1160. God is

  1161. bigger.

  1162. And he

  1163. can bring

  1164. light into

  1165. your darkness.

  1166. There is

  1167. hope east

  1168. of Eden.

  1169. And it's

  1170. found in

  1171. a son.

  1172. It's

  1173. found in

  1174. his only

  1175. begotten

  1176. son.

  1177. Because God

  1178. promises,

  1179. if you have

  1180. faith in the

  1181. Lord Jesus

  1182. Christ,

  1183. sin will

  1184. not,

  1185. cannot rule

  1186. over you.

  1187. Christ is

  1188. the son to

  1189. break the

  1190. power of that

  1191. monster inside

  1192. of you.

  1193. The monster

  1194. of this

  1195. world.

  1196. And so

  1197. Satan and

  1198. sin,

  1199. it seems

  1200. like he's

  1201. winning this

  1202. side of

  1203. Eden.

  1204. God's

  1205. God's

  1206. family.

  1207. Satan can

  1208. never win

  1209. in your

  1210. life.

  1211. Satan

  1212. tries to

  1213. suffocate,

  1214. to kill,

  1215. to extinguish

  1216. the church,

  1217. but God

  1218. is preserving

  1219. his family.

  1220. The family

  1221. of his

  1222. son,

  1223. the church.

  1224. For those

  1225. in Christ,

  1226. he is

  1227. preserving you

  1228. right now.

  1229. So let

  1230. me ask,

  1231. which

  1232. family do

  1233. you belong

  1234. to?

  1235. Because at

  1236. the end of

  1237. the age,

  1238. only one

  1239. family will

  1240. see victory

  1241. in this

  1242. war.

  1243. So this

  1244. side of

  1245. Eden,

  1246. yes,

  1247. there is

  1248. sin,

  1249. but there

  1250. is a

  1251. son,

  1252. and it's

  1253. only in

  1254. him that

  1255. we have

  1256. victory.

  1257. Let's

  1258. pray.
