  1. In Galatians chapter 3, we're going to look at verses 15 to 25.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  2. And we're doing an Advent series in the evening,

  3. and from next week we'll do some Advent stuff in the mornings.

  4. Galatians 3, 15 to 25.

  5. Let me again plug just Tabletop Magazine.

  6. I think it's a brilliant magazine on helping us get into the Bible

  7. and read the Scriptures every day.

  8. The articles are terrific,

  9. and in fact I wish I'd read these articles before this sermon.

  10. And so there's some very, very helpful stuff on faith alone,

  11. the differences between biblical Christianity and orthodoxy

  12. and biblical Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church.

  13. And so take one, take two, take as many as you can use.

  14. I think it's a terrific magazine.

  15. In June of 1520,

  16. three years after Martin Luther

  17. nailed his 95 thesis to the door,

  18. the castle door in Wittenberg,

  19. Martin Luther was condemned by the Roman Catholic Church.

  20. He was condemned by the Pope,

  21. condemned as a heretic,

  22. officially.

  23. And so Luther was forbidden to preach and teach.

  24. By way of response,

  25. Martin Luther, who by all accounts is pretty fiery,

  26. published three books.

  27. The first book was on

  28. the Christian nobility of the German nation.

  29. It was a masterstroke.

  30. If there's one way

  31. to get the Germans behind you

  32. in the Protestant Reformation

  33. is to say,

  34. well, you're not Italians, are you?

  35. And it was a brilliant,

  36. brilliant book.

  37. It was a masterstroke,

  38. politically.

  39. The second book

  40. that he wrote in 1520

  41. was

  42. The Babylonian Captivity of the Church.

  43. It is a no-holds-barred

  44. expose

  45. of the Roman Catholic Church

  46. and its abuses.

  47. You feel like you want to wear

  48. a safety helmet when you read it.

  49. And then thirdly,

  50. he wrote a little book called

  51. The Freedom of the Christian.

  52. You can still buy it today.

  53. There are those who say

  54. that The Freedom of the Christian

  55. by Martin Luther

  56. is one of the great pieces of literature

  57. in Western civilization.

  58. And in that little book,

  59. he makes two propositions.

  60. Number one,

  61. that a Christian,

  62. somebody who has put their faith

  63. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  64. is an utterly free man.

  65. Lord of all

  66. and subject to none.

  67. But secondly,

  68. he says

  69. that a Christian

  70. is an utterly dutiful man.

  71. The servant of all

  72. and subject of all.

  73. A free man,

  74. Lord of all,

  75. subject to no one.

  76. A dutiful man,

  77. subject,

  78. a servant of all

  79. and subject to all.

  80. And it's the first

  81. of those prepositions

  82. that I think

  83. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3:15–25

  84. verses 15 to 25

  85. is all about.

  86. that if you have put your faith

  87. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  88. and in him alone,

  89. you are free.

  90. The Lord of all,

  91. subject to none.

  92. Perhaps the key verse

  93. in the book of Galatians

  94. is chapter 5 verse 1.

    Isaiah 5:1

  95. Can you see that?

  96. For freedom,

  97. Christ has set us free.

  98. for freedom,

  99. Christ has set us free.

  100. The theme tune

  101. of Galatians

  102. is freedom.

  103. Freedom from the tyranny

  104. of the law.

  105. Freedom from the laws

  106. of men.

  107. Freedom from a guilty conscience.

  108. Freedom from the laws

  109. which the church

  110. imposes upon us.

  111. Freedom from the laws

  112. of the Judaizers

  113. of Paul's day

  114. that they were imposing.

  115. Freedom from the law

  116. as a means of justification.

  117. As a means of getting

  118. right with God.

  119. It is for freedom

  120. that Jesus Christ

  121. has set us free.

  122. There were those

  123. who turned up

  124. in the Galatian church.

  125. They were infiltrators.

  126. And they were deeply

  127. suspicious of the

  128. Apostle Paul

  129. and his message

  130. of what he was preaching

  131. and what he was doing.

  132. The church is made up

  133. largely of non-Jewish

  134. Gentile Christians.

  135. And these infiltrators,

  136. these Judaizers

  137. were insisting

  138. it's not enough

  139. to believe in the Lord Jesus.

  140. It's not enough

  141. to believe in the Lord Jesus.

  142. There are certain

  143. religious rights

  144. that you have to do.

  145. You have to obey

  146. certain ceremonial laws

  147. like circumcision

  148. and food laws

  149. and the Sabbath laws

  150. and feast day laws.

  151. And you have to do that

  152. in order

  153. to be made right with God.

  154. To be justified.

  155. It was insufficient.

  156. It was not enough

  157. to believe in Jesus.

  158. You need to do

  159. something extra.

  160. And it was that

  161. which led Paul

  162. to cite Father Abraham

  163. in Genesis 15.

  164. Abraham was the

  165. father of the Jews.

  166. Do you remember

  167. the infiltrators

  168. the Judaizers

  169. were saying

  170. you've got to

  171. get back to Moses.

  172. You've got to get

  173. back to the law.

  174. And Paul says

  175. I see you Moses

  176. and I raise you

  177. to Abraham

  178. the father of the Jews.

  179. And what Genesis 15

  180. and verse 6 says

  181. that Abraham

  182. the father of the Jews

  183. he believed.

  184. He believed in God's promises.

  185. And it was reckoned to him.

  186. It was credited to him

  187. as righteousness.

  188. It was through the instrument

  189. of faith

  190. in the promise

  191. that God had made

  192. that God counted

  193. Abraham as righteous.

  194. God reckoned Abraham

  195. as a law keeper.

  196. And so the question is then

  197. or what is the function

  198. of the law?

  199. If the apostle Paul

  200. is saying

  201. we are saved

  202. apart from the law

  203. apart from works

  204. apart from obedience

  205. apart from our trying

  206. we are made right

  207. with God

  208. through faith

  209. in Jesus Christ

  210. alone

  211. and apart from obedience

  212. on our part

  213. what is the point

  214. of the law?

  215. What is its purpose?

  216. Look at verse 19

  217. chapter 3

  218. Why then

  219. the law?

  220. Why then

  221. the law?

  222. And Paul gives us

  223. two answers

  224. one is negative

  225. and one is positive.

  226. So first of all

  227. let's look at the

  228. negative answer.

  229. What the law

  230. cannot do.

  231. What the law

  232. cannot do.

  233. The law

  234. of God

  235. cannot

  236. annul

  237. the promise

  238. of God.

  239. The law

  240. of God

  241. cannot

  242. undo

  243. the gospel

  244. of God

  245. the good news

  246. of God.

  247. At whatever

  248. place

  249. at whatever

  250. function

  251. the law

  252. had

  253. it cannot

  254. subvert

  255. the gospel.

  256. You can't

  257. leave

  258. justification

  259. by faith

  260. alone behind.

  261. There were those

  262. in the church

  263. in Galatia

  264. just like there

  265. are those

  266. today who

  267. suggest something

  268. like this

  269. that the gospel

  270. brings you

  271. to the front

  272. door.

  273. That the gospel

  274. enables you

  275. to put your

  276. feet on

  277. the front

  278. step.

  279. But in order

  280. to keep going

  281. in order to

  282. reach the end

  283. it is entirely

  284. of works.

  285. Do you remember

  286. when you were

  287. slightly nervous

  288. of going

  289. to someone's

  290. house

  291. and you were

  292. being dropped

  293. off by your

  294. parents

  295. and your

  296. parents would

  297. say listen

  298. I'll drive you

  299. to the steps

  300. but you've

  301. got to get

  302. out and

  303. knock the

  304. door yourself.

  305. You've got

  306. to go in

  307. yourself.

  308. I'll take

  309. you as

  310. far as I

  311. can take

  312. you but

  313. then it's

  314. up to you

  315. you've got

  316. to go

  317. in.

  318. And there

  319. were people

  320. saying that

  321. is what

  322. the Bible's

  323. message is.

  324. The gospel

  325. gets you to

  326. the point

  327. where it

  328. gets you

  329. on the

  330. front step

  331. but in

  332. order to

  333. keep going

  334. as a

  335. Christian

  336. in order

  337. to reach

  338. the end

  339. well then

  340. it's about

  341. what you

  342. do.

  343. It's about

  344. our obedience

  345. and Paul is

  346. addressing that

  347. here.

  348. That

  349. fundamental

  350. pharisaical

  351. spirit and

  352. all of us

  353. are recovering

  354. pharisees in

  355. some form or

  356. another.

  357. All of us

  358. revert to

  359. that religious

  360. pharisee mode

  361. and Paul is

  362. addressing that

  363. issue that

  364. you begin by

  365. faith and

  366. then you are

  367. made perfect

  368. by the

  369. works,

  370. by flesh.

  371. You begin

  372. by the

  373. spirit but

  374. you are

  375. made perfect

  376. by the

  377. flesh.

  378. And so he

  379. raises this

  380. example and

  381. it's an

  382. example of

  383. history from

  384. Abraham.

  385. And he

  386. says in

  387. verse 15,

  388. can you see

  389. it?

  390. I'll give a

  391. human example.

  392. Brothers,

  393. even with a

  394. man-made

  395. covenant,

  396. no one

  397. annuls it

  398. or adds

  399. to it once

  400. it's been

  401. ratified.

  402. And the

  403. word there

  404. for covenant

  405. is a

  406. word called

  407. diotheki,

  408. it's quite a

  409. prominent word

  410. in Greek

  411. in the New

  412. Testament.

  413. And there

  414. are people

  415. who say

  416. what Paul

  417. has in

  418. mind here

  419. is not

  420. so much

  421. God's

  422. covenant

  423. but a

  424. last will

  425. and testament.

  426. And there's

  427. a raging

  428. debate,

  429. hundreds of

  430. PhDs have

  431. been written

  432. on it,

  433. whether it

  434. should be

  435. rendered

  436. covenant

  437. or last

  438. will and

  439. testament.

  440. And if

  441. it's last

  442. will and

  443. testament,

  444. there are

  445. kind of

  446. different

  447. choices.

  448. Was Paul

  449. thinking of

  450. the way

  451. Romans did

  452. last wills

  453. and testaments

  454. or was he

  455. thinking about

  456. the way

  457. Greeks did

  458. last wills

  459. and testaments,

  460. they were

  461. different.

  462. If you

  463. used to

  464. give a

  465. Greek

  466. last will

  467. and testament,

  468. it was very

  469. clear that

  470. once the

  471. will had

  472. been made

  473. and the

  474. testament had

  475. been made

  476. and had

  477. been signed

  478. and ratified

  479. and placed

  480. in the

  481. depository,

  482. it could not

  483. be changed,

  484. it could not

  485. be annulled,

  486. it could not

  487. be broken,

  488. it could not

  489. be tampered

  490. with.

  491. It's a minister

  492. I know quite

  493. well in Wales

  494. and very

  495. foolishly,

  496. when he

  497. was asked

  498. to be

  499. an executor

  500. of an

  501. old lady

  502. in his

  503. church,

  504. he said

  505. yes,

  506. never agree

  507. to that

  508. if you're

  509. a minister,

  510. it was a

  511. total disaster.

  512. She left

  513. her entire

  514. estate

  515. between the

  516. church,

  517. 50% went

  518. to the

  519. church

  520. and 50%

  521. went to

  522. her family.

  523. When she

  524. died,

  525. of course the

  526. family found

  527. out about

  528. this and

  529. they were

  530. incensed,

  531. they were

  532. absolutely

  533. furious.

  534. They contested

  535. it,

  536. they went

  537. to the

  538. local

  539. press.

  540. They were

  541. furious that

  542. 50% of

  543. their mother's

  544. estate went

  545. to the

  546. church and

  547. they contested

  548. it.

  549. They contested

  550. the way that

  551. the will had

  552. been drawn

  553. up.

  554. After

  555. endless hassle

  556. and it being

  557. in the local

  558. papers,

  559. about a month

  560. later the

  561. lawyer called

  562. my friend

  563. and said

  564. I've looked

  565. into it

  566. and the

  567. will cannot

  568. be altered.

  569. The will

  570. was entered

  571. into legally,

  572. it was ratified

  573. legally and it

  574. cannot be

  575. changed.

  576. And to

  577. the boot

  578. I've

  579. charged the

  580. family £1,000

  581. for the

  582. decision.

  583. Can you

  584. imagine

  585. it made

  586. things a

  587. whole lot

  588. worse.

  589. The point

  590. is this,

  591. the illustration

  592. is saying

  593. this,

  594. once a

  595. will has

  596. been done

  597. it cannot

  598. be changed.

  599. And once

  600. someone has

  601. died,

  602. then the

  603. will certainly

  604. cannot be

  605. changed.

  606. So it

  607. could be

  608. that,

  609. or perhaps

  610. Paul doesn't

  611. have the

  612. last will

  613. and testament

  614. in mind,

  615. but as the

  616. ESV suggests,

  617. he has

  618. God's

  619. covenant.

  620. And the

  621. point about

  622. God's

  623. covenant is

  624. this,

  625. his word,

  626. God's

  627. word,

  628. can never

  629. be broken.

  630. The grass

  631. withers and

  632. the flowers

  633. fade,

  634. but the

  635. word of

  636. our God

  637. stands

  638. forever.

  639. And when

  640. God gives

  641. his word,

  642. it is utterly

  643. and completely

  644. trustworthy.

  645. And so he's

  646. talking about

  647. God's covenant

  648. with Abraham,

  649. that we read

  650. of in

  651. Genesis 12,

  652. and then

  653. the covenant

  654. in Genesis 12

  655. is ratified

  656. in Genesis 15.

  657. It's confirmed.

  658. In Genesis 12,

  659. actually,

  660. the word covenant

  661. does not

  662. appear.

  663. But in

  664. Genesis 15,

  665. he speaks about

  666. the covenant

  667. that's already

  668. been made.

  669. And so we

  670. can defer

  671. from that,

  672. can't we,

  673. that what

  674. God did

  675. in Genesis 12

  676. is a covenant

  677. with Abraham.

  678. And in that

  679. covenant,

  680. God promised

  681. to Abraham

  682. land and

  683. seed,

  684. children,

  685. and that

  686. his children

  687. would be like

  688. the stars

  689. in the sky

  690. and like the

  691. sand on the

  692. seashore.

  693. In chapter

  694. 15,

  695. he ratifies

  696. that covenant,

  697. he confirms

  698. it.

  699. And that

  700. covenant

  701. would eventually

  702. produce the

  703. Lord Jesus

  704. Christ.

  705. And Paul

  706. makes what

  707. is a rather

  708. obscure kind

  709. of exegetical

  710. point.

  711. he kind

  712. of looks

  713. and sees

  714. something that

  715. we wouldn't

  716. initially see

  717. from Genesis

  718. 12 and

  719. verse 15.

  720. That when

  721. God made

  722. the promise

  723. to Abraham,

  724. he said,

  725. to you and

  726. your offspring,

  727. singular.

  728. Now there's a

  729. sense which

  730. that promise

  731. that God

  732. made to

  733. Abraham was

  734. to his

  735. children and

  736. to his

  737. grandchildren and

  738. his great

  739. grandchildren after

  740. them.

  741. It's part of

  742. the argument

  743. of why we

  744. baptise children,

  745. that God's

  746. promises always

  747. include the

  748. children of

  749. believers,

  750. that children

  751. are included

  752. within the

  753. covenant.

  754. But the

  755. Apostle Paul

  756. looks at it

  757. and he draws

  758. this one

  759. particular point.

  760. He says it's

  761. singular.

  762. And the

  763. fulfilment of

  764. the promise

  765. in Genesis

  766. 12,

  767. 15,

  768. 17 is

  769. ultimately

  770. found in

  771. the Lord

  772. Jesus Christ.

  773. So let me

  774. tell you the

  775. story of

  776. Genesis 15.

  777. Do you

  778. remember how

  779. God confirmed

  780. how he

  781. ratified his

  782. covenant?

  783. In Genesis

  784. 15,

  785. we're told

  786. that Abraham

  787. was to

  788. take a

  789. cow and

  790. a goat and

  791. a ram and

  792. a dove and

  793. he was to

  794. cut those

  795. animals in

  796. half.

  797. And he was

  798. to cut them

  799. in half and

  800. then he was

  801. to separate the

  802. two halves from

  803. each other to

  804. leave a path for

  805. people to walk

  806. through between

  807. the carcasses.

  808. And it's at

  809. that point that

  810. Abraham falls

  811. fast asleep

  812. into a deep

  813. sleep.

  814. And then do

  815. you remember

  816. what happened

  817. in Genesis

  818. 15 where

  819. he told

  820. that a

  821. smoking

  822. furnace,

  823. a firepot

  824. came down.

  825. It was

  826. symbolic of

  827. God's

  828. presence.

  829. And so

  830. God's

  831. presence comes

  832. down while

  833. Abraham is

  834. in a deep

  835. sleep and

  836. the firepot,

  837. the symbol of

  838. God's presence,

  839. passes between

  840. the severed

  841. pieces.

  842. There's a

  843. covenant made

  844. but one

  845. of the

  846. parties of

  847. the covenant

  848. is fast

  849. asleep and

  850. the other

  851. party of the

  852. covenant walks

  853. through.

  854. Now when they

  855. walk through

  856. those severed

  857. pieces of

  858. animals,

  859. what were

  860. they saying?

  861. They were

  862. saying in that

  863. agreement that

  864. what has

  865. happened to

  866. these animals,

  867. it should fall

  868. on me,

  869. it should happen

  870. to me if I

  871. break this

  872. covenant.

  873. That if I

  874. break my

  875. promise,

  876. if I break

  877. my word,

  878. may what's

  879. happened to

  880. this cow cut

  881. in two happen

  882. to me,

  883. may I be

  884. cut in two?

  885. And so you

  886. have this

  887. incredible promise

  888. don't you,

  889. that God

  890. makes where

  891. he takes

  892. both the

  893. blessings and

  894. the curses of

  895. the covenant

  896. upon himself

  897. and he says

  898. if Abraham

  899. or I

  900. break this

  901. covenant,

  902. may the

  903. curse fall

  904. on me.

  905. And where

  906. is Abraham?

  907. Fast

  908. asleep.

  909. God

  910. is saying

  911. if I

  912. fail

  913. to observe

  914. the terms

  915. of my

  916. covenant

  917. and if

  918. Abraham

  919. fails to

  920. observe the

  921. terms of

  922. the covenant,

  923. may the

  924. covenant

  925. curse

  926. fall on

  927. me.

  928. It was a

  929. binding oath

  930. on God,

  931. on God's

  932. part for

  933. blessing and

  934. for curse.

  935. His word

  936. having been

  937. given,

  938. blood having

  939. been shed,

  940. that covenant

  941. cannot be

  942. nullified.

  943. the law,

  944. Mount Sinai,

  945. came 430

  946. years after

  947. that.

  948. 430

  949. years.

  950. And so the

  951. Apostle Paul,

  952. he looks over

  953. the history of

  954. God's dealings

  955. with his

  956. people,

  957. of the

  958. history of

  959. redemption,

  960. and he

  961. says the

  962. law,

  963. coming 430

  964. years after

  965. that covenant

  966. with Abraham,

  967. could not

  968. break the

  969. promise,

  970. could not

  971. annul the

  972. promise given

  973. to Abraham.

  974. God

  975. And so,

  976. that God

  977. wasn't saying,

  978. well, it was

  979. by faith in

  980. Abraham's day,

  981. but now

  982. Moses' time

  983. has come,

  984. and so it's

  985. the law and

  986. works.

  987. Paul is

  988. saying,

  989. it has

  990. always been

  991. by faith

  992. alone.

  993. Christian,

  994. I remember

  995. being asked,

  996. as a kind

  997. of young

  998. Christian,

  999. how did

  1000. Old Testament

  1001. believers

  1002. become

  1003. Christians,

  1004. if I can put

  1005. it like that?

  1006. And I

  1007. remember it

  1008. was like a

  1009. light bulb

  1010. moment.

  1011. It was like a

  1012. light bulb

  1013. moment.

  1014. That they

  1015. become Christians

  1016. in exactly the

  1017. same way that

  1018. you and I

  1019. do.

  1020. That by

  1021. faith we

  1022. look back

  1023. to what

  1024. Christ has

  1025. done.

  1026. By faith

  1027. they grasp

  1028. the promise

  1029. and they

  1030. look forward

  1031. to what

  1032. Christ has

  1033. done.

  1034. I think

  1035. Paul is also

  1036. speaking here

  1037. in terms of

  1038. Christian

  1039. experience.

  1040. That we

  1041. receive

  1042. forgiveness

  1043. of sins

  1044. by faith

  1045. in Jesus

  1046. Christ

  1047. and by

  1048. faith in

  1049. Jesus

  1050. Christ

  1051. alone.

  1052. And we

  1053. have to be

  1054. absolutely

  1055. clear because

  1056. the drift

  1057. of our

  1058. hearts is

  1059. the opposite

  1060. way.

  1061. That we

  1062. don't begin

  1063. by faith

  1064. and finish

  1065. by works.

  1066. We don't

  1067. begin by the

  1068. spirit and

  1069. finish by the

  1070. flesh.

  1071. We don't

  1072. get our

  1073. foot in the

  1074. door by

  1075. the gospel

  1076. and then

  1077. it's entirely

  1078. up to us.

  1079. The promise

  1080. was given

  1081. to Abraham

  1082. and it

  1083. was a

  1084. promise

  1085. that at

  1086. the heart

  1087. of it

  1088. a promise

  1089. of Jesus.

  1090. A promise

  1091. of the

  1092. provision of

  1093. God

  1094. in the

  1095. gospel.

  1096. The law

  1097. cannot

  1098. undo

  1099. justification

  1100. by faith.

  1101. The law

  1102. cannot

  1103. undo

  1104. your right

  1105. standing

  1106. with God

  1107. through faith

  1108. in Jesus

  1109. Christ.

  1110. It is not

  1111. justification

  1112. by faith

  1113. and then

  1114. sanctification

  1115. by works.

  1116. The law

  1117. cannot do

  1118. undo the

  1119. promise.

  1120. It's a

  1121. beautiful

  1122. verse,

  1123. verse 17.

  1124. You need

  1125. to meditate

  1126. on it

  1127. this week.

  1128. The law

  1129. does not

  1130. annul

  1131. God's

  1132. covenant.

  1133. It's an

  1134. amazing

  1135. thing.

  1136. The law

  1137. cannot

  1138. undo

  1139. the promise

  1140. and so

  1141. you look

  1142. to the

  1143. promise.

  1144. But then

  1145. secondly,

  1146. Paul makes

  1147. a positive

  1148. statement.

  1149. What can

  1150. the law

  1151. do?

  1152. What does

  1153. the law

  1154. do?

  1155. What

  1156. then is

  1157. the

  1158. function

  1159. of the

  1160. law?

  1161. If the

  1162. law

  1163. cannot

  1164. undo

  1165. the

  1166. promise,

  1167. what's

  1168. the

  1169. function

  1170. of the

  1171. law?

  1172. Now the

  1173. Reformation

  1174. understood

  1175. God's

  1176. law in

  1177. three ways.

  1178. It says

  1179. there's

  1180. three uses

  1181. of the

  1182. law.

  1183. I know

  1184. it's been

  1185. hard work

  1186. this morning

  1187. but stick

  1188. with me.

  1189. First of

  1190. all it

  1191. talks about

  1192. the civil

  1193. use of

  1194. the

  1195. law.

  1196. And so

  1197. the use

  1198. of God's

  1199. law in

  1200. society,

  1201. this is

  1202. God's

  1203. world,

  1204. God's

  1205. law.

  1206. The use

  1207. of the

  1208. law in

  1209. framing

  1210. society

  1211. after the

  1212. Ten

  1213. Commandments.

  1214. The rules

  1215. and the

  1216. regulations

  1217. for ordinary

  1218. society

  1219. was God's

  1220. law.

  1221. And there's

  1222. a sense

  1223. in which

  1224. God's

  1225. law was

  1226. given

  1227. to bring

  1228. civilisation.

  1229. The use

  1230. of the

  1231. law in

  1232. civil life

  1233. to restrain

  1234. public

  1235. wickedness

  1236. and maintain

  1237. order in

  1238. society.

  1239. Of course

  1240. you see

  1241. that fully

  1242. don't you

  1243. in the

  1244. nation of

  1245. Israel

  1246. in the

  1247. Old

  1248. Testament.

  1249. But that

  1250. still stands

  1251. today.

  1252. We see

  1253. the disaster

  1254. that comes

  1255. upon a

  1256. country that

  1257. gives itself

  1258. up on

  1259. God's

  1260. law.

  1261. But there's

  1262. a second

  1263. use of

  1264. the law.

  1265. And it's

  1266. what we see

  1267. here in

  1268. the Apostle

  1269. Paul.

  1270. He says

  1271. the law

  1272. is a

  1273. guardian

  1274. or a

  1275. pedagogue,

  1276. a teacher.

  1277. Then there's

  1278. a third

  1279. use of

  1280. the law

  1281. where it's

  1282. a kind

  1283. of didactic

  1284. sense.

  1285. The law

  1286. as a

  1287. rule for

  1288. life,

  1289. it is to

  1290. guide our

  1291. behaviour as

  1292. believers,

  1293. to reflect

  1294. the blessings

  1295. of the

  1296. grace which

  1297. we've

  1298. received.

  1299. It sets

  1300. a pattern

  1301. for the

  1302. Christian

  1303. law.

  1304. But what

  1305. Paul is

  1306. doing in

  1307. verse 19

  1308. is he's

  1309. saying about

  1310. that second

  1311. use of

  1312. the law,

  1313. that it

  1314. is a

  1315. teacher,

  1316. it is a

  1317. guardian.

  1318. It was

  1319. added because

  1320. of

  1321. transgressions,

  1322. rebellion.

  1323. It was

  1324. added because

  1325. of

  1326. transgressions.

  1327. There's a

  1328. sense in

  1329. which the

  1330. law only

  1331. multiplies our

  1332. need.

  1333. The law

  1334. only multiplies

  1335. our sinfulness.

  1336. It only

  1337. shuts us up.

  1338. Look at what

  1339. it says in

  1340. verse 22.

  1341. He talks about

  1342. the scriptures

  1343. there, that

  1344. the scriptures

  1345. imprisoned

  1346. everything.

  1347. The scripture

  1348. imprisoned

  1349. everything under

  1350. sin so that

  1351. the promise by

  1352. faith in

  1353. Jesus Christ

  1354. might be given

  1355. to those

  1356. who believe.

  1357. When the

  1358. law comes,

  1359. it demonstrates

  1360. what sin

  1361. is.

  1362. When the

  1363. law comes,

  1364. it magnifies

  1365. our sin and

  1366. our failure

  1367. and our

  1368. inability and

  1369. our bondage.

  1370. There is a

  1371. sense in

  1372. which when

  1373. the law

  1374. comes, all

  1375. it does is

  1376. kill and

  1377. destroy and

  1378. imprison.

  1379. The world

  1380. thinks in

  1381. this way,

  1382. the world

  1383. thinks that

  1384. the obligation

  1385. to do

  1386. something

  1387. implies the

  1388. ability to

  1389. do it.

  1390. That's how

  1391. the world

  1392. thinks.

  1393. The world

  1394. thinks if

  1395. you are

  1396. obliged to

  1397. do something,

  1398. then you

  1399. must have

  1400. the ability

  1401. to do it.

  1402. The Bible

  1403. however flips

  1404. that on its

  1405. head.

  1406. You are

  1407. under

  1408. obligation,

  1409. but you

  1410. cannot

  1411. obey.

  1412. That's the

  1413. frustration,

  1414. isn't it?

  1415. the difficulty

  1416. of God's

  1417. law is it

  1418. says do

  1419. this and

  1420. you and

  1421. I cannot

  1422. do it.

  1423. The law

  1424. says go

  1425. here and

  1426. you find

  1427. yourself going

  1428. in the

  1429. opposite

  1430. direction.

  1431. And when

  1432. the law

  1433. came,

  1434. Paul here

  1435. is speaking

  1436. perhaps about

  1437. the history

  1438. of redemption,

  1439. but also

  1440. when we

  1441. speak about

  1442. our experience,

  1443. this is how

  1444. we experience

  1445. the law.

  1446. So think

  1447. with me about

  1448. Romans chapter

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1449. 7.

  1450. In fact,

  1451. come back

  1452. with me to

  1453. Romans chapter

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1454. 7.

  1455. Romans chapter

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1456. 7 and

  1457. verse 7,

  1458. where Paul

  1459. says this,

  1460. he says,

  1461. and what

  1462. then should

  1463. we say?

  1464. Romans 7

    Romans 7:7

  1465. verse 7,

  1466. what then

  1467. shall we

  1468. say?

  1469. That the

  1470. law is

  1471. sin?

  1472. Well,

  1473. by no

  1474. means.

  1475. Yet,

  1476. if it

  1477. had not

  1478. been for

  1479. the law,

  1480. I would

  1481. not have

  1482. known sin.

  1483. For I

  1484. would not

  1485. have known

  1486. what it

  1487. is to

  1488. covet if

  1489. the law

  1490. had said

  1491. you shall

  1492. not

  1493. covet.

  1494. But sin,

  1495. seizing an

  1496. opportunity through

  1497. the commandment

  1498. produced in

  1499. me all

  1500. kinds of

  1501. covetlessness.

  1502. For apart

  1503. from the law,

  1504. sin lies

  1505. dead.

  1506. I was

  1507. once alive,

  1508. apart from

  1509. the law,

  1510. but when the

  1511. commandment

  1512. came,

  1513. sin came

  1514. alive and

  1515. I died.

  1516. What's he

  1517. saying there?

  1518. He's talking

  1519. about his

  1520. life as a

  1521. Pharisee,

  1522. as a

  1523. religious man.

  1524. He's talking

  1525. about his

  1526. life before he

  1527. became Christian.

  1528. He was alive

  1529. once,

  1530. that's how

  1531. he felt.

  1532. He felt

  1533. he was

  1534. alive,

  1535. a man

  1536. full of

  1537. vigour,

  1538. and moral

  1539. power,

  1540. but then

  1541. the law

  1542. of God

  1543. came,

  1544. and it

  1545. convicted him,

  1546. and it

  1547. incarcerated him,

  1548. and it

  1549. put him

  1550. in prison,

  1551. and it

  1552. shut him

  1553. up,

  1554. and it

  1555. showed the

  1556. apostle Paul

  1557. that he

  1558. couldn't do

  1559. what God

  1560. was asking

  1561. him to

  1562. do.

  1563. It

  1564. showed him

  1565. his

  1566. inability,

  1567. it showed

  1568. him his

  1569. sinfulness

  1570. and his

  1571. wretchedness.

  1572. It only

  1573. demonstrated

  1574. that he

  1575. couldn't

  1576. save

  1577. himself.

  1578. When the

  1579. law came,

  1580. he died.

  1581. He felt

  1582. once,

  1583. he felt

  1584. alive,

  1585. he felt

  1586. he was

  1587. full of

  1588. life and

  1589. vigour.

  1590. Our

  1591. friends who

  1592. are not

  1593. Christians,

  1594. they're not

  1595. gloomy,

  1596. in the

  1597. main,

  1598. they're not

  1599. always

  1600. down.

  1601. They are

  1602. alive without

  1603. the law,

  1604. and then the

  1605. law comes

  1606. when they

  1607. understand it,

  1608. and it

  1609. shows them

  1610. their

  1611. inability,

  1612. and it

  1613. shows them

  1614. their

  1615. sinfulness,

  1616. and it

  1617. shows them

  1618. their need,

  1619. and it

  1620. shows them

  1621. their

  1622. wretchedness,

  1623. and they

  1624. die.

  1625. It's

  1626. like being

  1627. imprisoned.

  1628. It's

  1629. like the

  1630. rich young

  1631. ruler.

  1632. Do you

  1633. remember the

  1634. rich young

  1635. ruler?

  1636. He comes

  1637. to Jesus,

  1638. and he

  1639. says to

  1640. Jesus,

  1641. this amazing

  1642. question,

  1643. what must

  1644. I do to

  1645. inherit eternal

  1646. life?

  1647. And Jesus

  1648. says,

  1649. you know

  1650. the ten

  1651. commandments,

  1652. go and

  1653. do them.

  1654. The

  1655. rich young

  1656. ruler says,

  1657. well, all

  1658. these I've

  1659. kept since I

  1660. was a

  1661. boy.

  1662. He

  1663. hasn't

  1664. understood

  1665. the law.

  1666. He

  1667. feels he's

  1668. alive.

  1669. He feels

  1670. full of

  1671. moral courage

  1672. and virtue.

  1673. He says

  1674. to Jesus,

  1675. all these

  1676. I've

  1677. kept

  1678. since I

  1679. was a

  1680. boy.

  1681. It's

  1682. his

  1683. problem.

  1684. He

  1685. didn't

  1686. understand

  1687. it.

  1688. Paul

  1689. talks in

  1690. Philippians

  1691. 3,

  1692. concerning

  1693. zeal,

  1694. he talks

  1695. about his

  1696. life before

  1697. he became

  1698. a Christian,

  1699. concerning

  1700. zeal,

  1701. as to

  1702. the law,

  1703. as to

  1704. righteousness

  1705. under the

  1706. law,

  1707. blameless.

  1708. That's what I

  1709. thought I

  1710. was.

  1711. That's how

  1712. I felt.

  1713. I felt

  1714. alive.

  1715. And then

  1716. the law

  1717. came and

  1718. it imprisoned

  1719. me.

  1720. And it

  1721. hand me

  1722. in.

  1723. Paul uses

  1724. two metaphors.

  1725. One of the

  1726. metaphors that

  1727. he uses is

  1728. this metaphor

  1729. of a

  1730. pedagogue

  1731. He uses

  1732. the image

  1733. of a

  1734. prison guard!

  1735. but he

  1736. also uses

  1737. this

  1738. metaphor of

  1739. a pedagogue.

  1740. A pedagogue

  1741. in Greek

  1742. or Roman

  1743. culture was

  1744. a man

  1745. usually was

  1746. a slave

  1747. and that

  1748. slave would

  1749. be hired

  1750. to disciple

  1751. and train

  1752. and teach

  1753. the child.

  1754. And he

  1755. would go

  1756. everywhere

  1757. with him.

  1758. He would

  1759. go to

  1760. school with

  1761. the child.

  1762. He would

  1763. come home

  1764. with the

  1765. child.

  1766. He would

  1767. discipline

  1768. the child

  1769. all with

  1770. a view

  1771. to

  1772. disciplining

  1773. him.

  1774. That's what

  1775. the law

  1776. does.

  1777. It

  1778. disciplines

  1779. us.

  1780. The law

  1781. hangs us

  1782. in.

  1783. The law

  1784. is like

  1785. one of

  1786. those

  1787. sheep dogs

  1788. in a

  1789. sheep trial

  1790. kind of

  1791. biting at

  1792. our feet

  1793. trying to

  1794. get us

  1795. to where

  1796. we need

  1797. to go

  1798. to.

  1799. And the

  1800. law is

  1801. like all

  1802. of those

  1803. restraints

  1804. and you

  1805. it pushes

  1806. you and

  1807. it prods

  1808. you until

  1809. you realise

  1810. there is

  1811. only one

  1812. place to

  1813. go.

  1814. And the

  1815. only place

  1816. that you

  1817. can go

  1818. the law

  1819. teaches us

  1820. is to

  1821. Jesus

  1822. Christ.

  1823. What does

  1824. the law

  1825. do?

  1826. The law

  1827. drives us

  1828. to Jesus

  1829. Christ.

  1830. The law

  1831. kicks away

  1832. our self

  1833. reliance

  1834. and it

  1835. drives us

  1836. to faith

  1837. and to

  1838. faith alone.

  1839. And not

  1840. just for

  1841. our

  1842. justification

  1843. that's

  1844. Paul's

  1845. point.

  1846. It's not

  1847. just for

  1848. our

  1849. justification

  1850. the law

  1851. cannot

  1852. make you

  1853. right with

  1854. God

  1855. but the

  1856. law

  1857. cannot

  1858. sanctify

  1859. you.

  1860. It

  1861. cannot

  1862. make

  1863. you

  1864. more

  1865. holy.

  1866. There

  1867. is a

  1868. view

  1869. isn't

  1870. there

  1871. in

  1872. churches

  1873. like

  1874. ours

  1875. that

  1876. you're

  1877. justified

  1878. by

  1879. faith

  1880. but

  1881. you're

  1882. sanctified

  1883. by the

  1884. law.

  1885. And that

  1886. is a

  1887. disaster

  1888. because

  1889. we're

  1890. never

  1891. able

  1892. to

  1893. do

  1894. it.

  1895. Any

  1896. obedience

  1897. we are

  1898. to

  1899. offer

  1900. to

  1901. the

  1902. law

  1903. and

  1904. we

  1905. are

  1906. to

  1907. walk

  1908. by

  1909. the

  1910. fruit

  1911. of

  1912. the

  1913. Holy

  1914. Spirit

  1915. we

  1916. do

  1917. so

  1918. by

  1919. the

  1920. strength

  1921. and

  1922. the

  1923. power

  1924. of

  1925. the

  1926. Holy

  1927. Spirit

  1928. in

  1929. union

  1930. and

  1931. communion

  1932. with

  1933. Jesus

  1934. Christ.

  1935. Because

  1936. apart

  1937. from the

  1938. Lord

  1939. Jesus

  1940. we can

  1941. do

  1942. nothing.

  1943. But

  1944. there is a

  1945. view

  1946. isn't there

  1947. that Paul

  1948. is addressing

  1949. here

  1950. those who

  1951. begin

  1952. by

  1953. faith

  1954. and

  1955. that

  1956. they

  1957. are

  1958. made

  1959. perfect

  1960. by

  1961. the

  1962. !

  1963. And

  1964. Paul

  1965. says

  1966. no

  1967. that's

  1968. nonsense.

  1969. It's a

  1970. way of

  1971. disaster

  1972. and it's

  1973. a way

  1974. of

  1975. ruin.

  1976. And so

  1977. what is

  1978. the

  1979. function

  1980. of

  1981. the

  1982. law?

  1983. Some

  1984. of you

  1985. are

  1986. wondering

  1987. well

  1988. what is

  1989. the

  1990. function

  1991. of

  1992. the

  1993. law

  1994. in

  1995. the

  1996. life

  1997. of

  1998. a

  1999. Christian?

  2000. Are

  2001. Christians

  2002. obligated

  2003. to

  2004. obey

  2005. the

  2006. Ten

  2007. Commandments?

  2008. The answer

  2009. to that

  2010. is of

  2011. course.

  2012. You've

  2013. got to

  2014. read to

  2015. Galatians

    Galatians 5:6

  2016. chapter 5

  2017. verse 6

  2018. where Paul

  2019. gives

  2020. lots of

  2021. prohibitions

  2022. and lots

  2023. of

  2024. commands.

  2025. Do

  2026. this

  2027. and

  2028. don't

  2029. do

  2030. that.

  2031. But

  2032. his

  2033. point

  2034. is

  2035. this

  2036. any

  2037. obedience

  2038. that we

  2039. offer

  2040. is

  2041. not

  2042. our

  2043. obedience

  2044. solely

  2045. it is

  2046. because

  2047. we

  2048. are

  2049. united

  2050. by

  2051. faith

  2052. to

  2053. the

  2054. Lord

  2055. Jesus

  2056. Christ.

  2057. And

  2058. it's

  2059. only

  2060. because

  2061. we

  2062. are

  2063. cleansed

  2064. and

  2065. forgiven

  2066. and

  2067. the

  2068. promise

  2069. has

  2070. been

  2071. given

  2072. to

  2073. us

  2074. that

  2075. cannot

  2076. be

  2077. annulled

  2078. and

  2079. cannot

  2080. be

  2081. taken

  2082. away.

  2083. And

  2084. so

  2085. trusting

  2086. in

  2087. that

  2088. promise

  2089. we

  2090. are

  2091. free

  2092. to

  2093. obey

  2094. God's

  2095. law.

  2096. And

  2097. so

  2098. he

  2099. addresses

  2100. you

  2101. today

  2102. you

  2103. who

  2104. have

  2105. come

  2106. this

  2107. morning

  2108. bowed

  2109. down

  2110. beneath

  2111. a load

  2112. of care

  2113. and a load

  2114. of guilt

  2115. you

  2116. who have

  2117. come

  2118. and you

  2119. are aware

  2120. that you've

  2121. sinned

  2122. and you've

  2123. fallen

  2124. short of

  2125. the glory

  2126. of God

  2127. like all

  2128. of us

  2129. have

  2130. and you've

  2131. not done

  2132. the things

  2133. that you've

  2134. promised to

  2135. do

  2136. and you've

  2137. not lived

  2138. up to the

  2139. vows you

  2140. made last

  2141. Sunday

  2142. and it

  2143. weighs on

  2144. you

  2145. it weighs

  2146. on you

  2147. there is

  2148. within each

  2149. one of us

  2150. a

  2151. recovering

  2152. pharisaical

  2153. mode

  2154. that

  2155. operates

  2156. in our

  2157. minds

  2158. there's

  2159. a view

  2160. in our

  2161. minds

  2162. that we've

  2163. got from

  2164. somewhere

  2165. that Jesus

  2166. brings us

  2167. to the

  2168. front door

  2169. he opens

  2170. the passenger

  2171. side and he

  2172. says you're

  2173. on your

  2174. own from

  2175. now on

  2176. the rest

  2177. of life

  2178. is entirely

  2179. up to

  2180. you

  2181. but the

  2182. law of

  2183. God

  2184. drives us

  2185. to Jesus

  2186. Christ

  2187. and to

  2188. the gospel

  2189. and so

  2190. we are

  2191. justified

  2192. by faith

  2193. and we

  2194. live

  2195. by faith

  2196. in the

  2197. Lord Jesus

  2198. Christ

  2199. let's pray

  2200. let's

  2201. let's

  2202. let's

  2203. let's

  2204. let's

  2205. let's

  2206. let's

  2207. let's

  2208. let's
