  1. Galatians chapter 3, we're going to look at verses 15 to 25, and we're doing an Advent series

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  2. ! in the evening and from next week we'll do some Advent stuff in the mornings. Galatians 3, 15 to 25.

  3. Let me again plug just Tabletalk Magazine. I think it's a brilliant magazine on helping us get into

  4. the Bible and read the scriptures every day. The articles are terrific and in fact I wish I'd written,

  5. I wish I'd read these articles before this sermon. And so there's some very, very helpful stuff on

  6. Faith Alone, the differences between Biblical Christianity and Orthodoxy and Biblical Christianity

  7. and the Roman Catholic Church. And so take one, take two, take as many as you can use. I think it's

  8. a terrific magazine. In June of 1520, three years after Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the door,

  9. the castle door in Wittenberg, Martin Luther was condemned by the Roman Catholic Church.

  10. He was condemned by the Pope, condemned as a heretic, officially. And so Luther was forbidden to preach

  11. and teach. By way of response, Martin Luther, who by all accounts is pretty fiery, published three books.

  12. The first book was on the Christian nobility of the German nation. It was a masterstroke.

  13. If there's one way to get the Germans behind you in the Protestant Reformation is to say,

  14. well, you're not Italians, are you? And it was a brilliant, brilliant book. It was a masterstroke,

  15. politically. The second book that he wrote in 1520 was The Babylonian Captivity of the Church. It is a no-holds-barred

  16. expose of the Roman Catholic Church and its abuses. You feel like you want to wear a safety helmet when

  17. you read it. And then thirdly, he wrote a little book called The Freedom of the Christian.

  18. You can still buy it today. There are those who say that The Freedom of the Christian by Martin Luther

  19. is one of the great pieces of literature in Western civilization. And in that little book, he makes two

  20. propositions. Number one, that a Christian, somebody who has put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  21. is an utterly free man. Lord of all and subject to none. But secondly, he says that a Christian

  22. is an utterly dutiful man. The servant of all and subject of all. A free man, Lord of all, subject to no one.

  23. A dutiful man. A dutiful man. Subject, a servant of all and subject to all. And it's the first of those

  24. prepositions that I think Galatians chapter 3 verses 15 to 25 is all about. That if you have put your faith

    Galatians 3:15–25

  25. in the Lord Jesus Christ and in him alone, you are free. The Lord of all, subject to none.

  26. Perhaps the key verse in the book of Galatians is chapter 5 verse 1. Can you see that?

    Isaiah 5:1

  27. For freedom, Christ has set us free. For freedom, Christ has set us free. The theme tune of Galatians

  28. is freedom. Freedom from the tyranny of the law. Freedom from the laws of men.

  29. Freedom from a guilty conscience. Freedom from the laws which the church imposes upon us. Freedom from the laws

  30. of the Judaizers of Paul's day that they were imposing. Freedom from the law as a means of justification.

  31. As a means of getting right with God. It is for freedom that Jesus Christ has set us free.

  32. There were those who turned up in the Galatian church. They were infiltrators.

  33. And they were deeply suspicious of the apostle Paul and his message.

  34. Of what he was preaching and what he was doing.

  35. The church is made up largely of non-Jewish Gentile Christians.

  36. And these infiltrators, these Judaizers, were insisting,

  37. it's not enough to believe in the Lord Jesus.

  38. It's not enough to believe in the Lord Jesus.

  39. There are certain religious rites that you have to do.

  40. You have to obey certain ceremonial laws.

  41. Like circumcision and food laws.

  42. And the Sabbath laws.

  43. And feast day laws.

  44. And you have to do that in order

  45. to be made right with God.

  46. To be justified.

  47. It was insufficient.

  48. It was not enough to believe in Jesus.

  49. You need to do something extra.

  50. And it was that which led Paul

  51. to cite Father Abraham in Genesis 15.

  52. Abraham was the father of the Jews.

  53. Do you remember the infiltrators, the Judaizers,

  54. were saying you've got to get back to Moses.

  55. You've got to get back to the law.

  56. And Paul says I see you Moses

  57. and I raise you to Abraham,

  58. the father of the Jews.

  59. And what Genesis 15 and verse 6 says

  60. that Abraham, the father of the Jews,

  61. he believed.

  62. He believed in God's promises.

  63. And it was reckoned to him.

  64. It was credited to him as righteousness.

  65. It was through the instrument of faith

  66. in the promise that God had made

  67. that God counted Abraham as righteous.

  68. God reckoned Abraham as a law keeper.

  69. And so the question is then,

  70. or what is the function of the law?

  71. If you're possible, Paul is saying,

  72. we are saved apart from the law,

  73. apart from works,

  74. apart from obedience,

  75. apart from our trying.

  76. we are made right with God

  77. through faith in Jesus Christ alone,

  78. and apart from obedience on our part,

  79. what is the point of the law?

  80. What is its purpose?

  81. Look at verse 19 of chapter 3.

  82. Why then the law?

  83. Why then the law?

  84. And Paul gives us two answers.

  85. One is negative and one is positive.

  86. So first of all,

  87. let's look at the negative answer.

  88. What the law cannot do.

  89. What the law cannot do.

  90. The law of God

  91. cannot annul

  92. the promise of God.

  93. The law of God

  94. cannot undo

  95. the gospel of God,

  96. the good news of God.

  97. At whatever place,

  98. at whatever function

  99. the law had,

  100. it cannot subvert the gospel.

  101. You can't leave

  102. justification by faith alone behind.

  103. There were those in the church in Galatia,

  104. just like there are those today,

  105. who suggest something like this.

  106. That the gospel

  107. brings you to the front door.

  108. That the gospel enables you

  109. to put your feet on the front step.

  110. But in order to keep going,

  111. in order to reach the end,

  112. it is entirely of works.

  113. Do you remember when you were

  114. slightly nervous of going

  115. to someone's house?

  116. You were being dropped off

  117. by your parents.

  118. And your parents would say,

  119. listen, I'll drive you to the steps.

  120. But you've got to get out

  121. and knock the door yourself.

  122. You've got to go in yourself.

  123. I'll take you as far as I can take you,

  124. but then it's up to you.

  125. You've got to go in.

  126. And there were people

  127. that were saying,

  128. that is what the Bible's message is.

  129. The gospel gets you to the point

  130. where it gets you on the front step.

  131. But in order to keep going as a Christian,

  132. in order to reach the end,

  133. well then it's about what you do.

  134. It's about our obedience.

  135. And Paul is addressing that here.

  136. That fundamental,

  137. pharisaical spirit.

  138. And all of us

  139. are recovering Pharisees

  140. in some form or another.

  141. All of us revert

  142. to that religious Pharisee mode.

  143. And Paul is addressing that issue.

  144. That you begin by faith

  145. and then you are made perfect

  146. by the works,

  147. by flesh.

  148. You begin by the spirit,

  149. but you are made perfect

  150. by the flesh.

  151. And so he raises this example.

  152. And it's an example

  153. of history from Abraham.

  154. And he says in verse 15,

  155. can you see it?

  156. I'll give you a human example.

  157. Paul, brothers,

  158. even with a man-made covenant,

  159. no one annuls it

  160. or adds to it

  161. once it's been ratified.

  162. And the word there for covenant

  163. is a word called diotheke.

  164. It's quite a prominent word

  165. in Greek in the New Testament.

  166. And there are people who say,

  167. what Paul has in mind here

  168. is not so much

  169. God's covenant,

  170. but a last will and testament.

  171. And there's a raging debate.

  172. Hundreds of PhDs

  173. have been written on it.

  174. Whether it should be rendered

  175. covenant,

  176. or last will and testament.

  177. And if it's last will and testament,

  178. there are kind of different choices.

  179. Was Paul thinking of

  180. the way Romans did

  181. last wills and testaments?

  182. Or was he thinking about

  183. the way Greeks did

  184. last wills and testaments?

  185. They're different.

  186. If he was thinking of

  187. a Greek last will and testament,

  188. it was very clear

  189. that once the will had been made

  190. and the testament had been made

  191. and had been signed

  192. and ratified

  193. and placed in the depository,

  194. it could not be changed.

  195. It could not be annulled.

  196. It could not be broken.

  197. It could not be tampered with.

  198. It's a minister I know

  199. quite well in Wales

  200. and very foolishly,

  201. when he was asked

  202. to be an executor

  203. of an old lady in his church,

  204. he said,

  205. yes, never agree to that

  206. if you're a minister.

  207. It was a total disaster.

  208. As she left her entire estate

  209. between the church,

  210. 50% went to the church

  211. and 50% went to her family.

  212. When she died,

  213. of course the family found out

  214. about this

  215. and they were incensed.

  216. They were absolutely furious.

  217. They contested it.

  218. They went to the local press.

  219. They were furious

  220. that 50% of their mother's estate

  221. went to the church

  222. and they contested it.

  223. They contested the way

  224. that the will had been drawn up.

  225. After endless hassle

  226. and it being in the local papers,

  227. about a month later,

  228. the lawyer called my friend

  229. and said,

  230. I've looked into it

  231. and the will cannot be altered.

  232. The will was entered into legally,

  233. it was ratified legally

  234. and it cannot be changed.

  235. And to the boot,

  236. I've charged the family

  237. £1,000 for the decision.

  238. Can you imagine,

  239. it made things a whole lot worse.

  240. The point is this.

  241. The illustration is saying this.

  242. Once a will has been done,

  243. it cannot be changed.

  244. And once someone has died,

  245. then the will certainly cannot be changed.

  246. So it could be that,

  247. or perhaps Paul doesn't have

  248. the last will and testament in mind,

  249. but as the ESV suggests,

  250. he has God's covenant.

  251. And the point about God's covenant

  252. is this.

  253. His word,

  254. God's word,

  255. can never be broken.

  256. The grass withers

  257. and the flowers fade,

  258. but the word of our God

  259. stands forever.

  260. And when God gives his word,

  261. it is utterly

  262. and completely trustworthy.

  263. And so he's talking about

  264. God's covenant with Abraham

  265. that we read of in Genesis 12

  266. and then the covenant in Genesis 12

  267. is ratified in Genesis 15.

  268. It's confirmed.

  269. In Genesis 12, actually,

  270. the word covenant does not appear.

  271. But in Genesis 15,

  272. he speaks about the covenant

  273. that's already been made.

  274. And so we can defer from that,

  275. can't we,

  276. that what God did in Genesis 12

  277. is a covenant with Abraham.

  278. Abraham.

  279. And in that covenant,

  280. God promised to Abraham

  281. land and seed

  282. and children

  283. and that his children

  284. would be like

  285. the stars in the sky

  286. and like the sand on the seashore.

  287. In chapter 15,

  288. he ratifies that covenant.

  289. He confirms it.

  290. And that covenant

  291. would eventually produce

  292. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  293. And Paul makes

  294. what is a rather obscure

  295. kind of exegetical point.

  296. he kind of looks

  297. and sees something

  298. that we wouldn't initially see

  299. from Genesis 12 and verse 15.

  300. That when God made the promise

  301. to Abraham,

  302. he said,

  303. to you and your offspring,

  304. singular.

  305. Now there's a sense

  306. which that promise

  307. that God made to Abraham

  308. was to his children

  309. and to his grandchildren

  310. and his great-grandchildren

  311. after them.

  312. It's part of the argument

  313. of why we baptise children,

  314. that God's promises

  315. always include

  316. the children of believers,

  317. that children are included

  318. within the covenant.

  319. But the Apostle Paul

  320. looks at it

  321. and he draws this one

  322. particular point.

  323. He says it's singular.

  324. And the fulfilment

  325. of the promise

  326. in Genesis 12, 15, 17

  327. is ultimately found

  328. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  329. So let me tell you

  330. the story of Genesis 15.

  331. Do you remember

  332. how God confirmed

  333. how he ratified his covenant?

  334. In Genesis 15,

  335. we're told that Abraham

  336. was to take a cow

  337. and a goat

  338. and a ram

  339. and a dove

  340. and he was to cut

  341. those animals in half.

  342. And he was to cut them

  343. in half

  344. and then he was to

  345. separate the two halves

  346. from each other

  347. to leave a path

  348. for people to walk through

  349. between the carcasses.

  350. And it's at that point

  351. that Abraham

  352. falls fast asleep.

  353. into a deep sleep.

  354. And then do you remember

  355. what happened in Genesis 15

  356. where he told that

  357. a smoking furnace,

  358. a firepot,

  359. came down.

  360. It was symbolic

  361. of God's presence.

  362. And so God's presence

  363. comes down

  364. while Abraham is

  365. in a deep sleep

  366. and the firepot,

  367. the symbol of God's presence,

  368. passes between

  369. the severed pieces.

  370. there's a covenant made

  371. but one of the parties

  372. of the covenant

  373. is fast asleep

  374. and the other party

  375. of the covenant

  376. walks through.

  377. Now when they walk

  378. through those

  379. severed pieces of animals,

  380. what were they saying?

  381. They were saying

  382. in that agreement

  383. that what has happened

  384. to these animals,

  385. it should fall on me,

  386. it should happen to me

  387. if I break this covenant.

  388. that if I break my promise,

  389. if I break my word,

  390. may what's happened

  391. to this cow cut in two

  392. happen to me.

  393. May I be cut in two.

  394. And so you have

  395. this incredible promise,

  396. don't you,

  397. that God makes

  398. where he takes

  399. both the blessings

  400. and the curses

  401. of the covenant

  402. upon himself

  403. and he says

  404. if Abraham or I

  405. break this covenant,

  406. may the curse

  407. fall on

  408. me.

  409. And where is Abraham?

  410. Fast asleep.

  411. God is saying

  412. if I fail

  413. to observe

  414. the terms

  415. of my covenant

  416. and if Abraham

  417. fails to observe

  418. the terms

  419. of the covenant,

  420. may the covenant

  421. curse

  422. fall on me.

  423. It was a binding oath

  424. on God,

  425. on God's part

  426. for blessing

  427. and for curse.

  428. His word

  429. having been given

  430. and blood

  431. having been shed,

  432. that covenant

  433. cannot be nullified.

  434. The law,

  435. Mount Sinai,

  436. came 430 years

  437. after that.

  438. 430 years.

  439. And so the Apostle Paul,

  440. he looks over

  441. the history

  442. of God's dealings

  443. with his people,

  444. of the history

  445. of redemption,

  446. and he says

  447. the law

  448. coming 430 years

  449. after that covenant

  450. with Abraham

  451. could not

  452. break the promise,

  453. could not annul

  454. the promise

  455. given to Abraham.

  456. And so

  457. that God

  458. wasn't saying,

  459. well,

  460. it was by faith

  461. in Abraham's day,

  462. but now Moses'

  463. time has come

  464. and so it's the law

  465. and works.

  466. Paul is saying

  467. it has always

  468. been by faith

  469. alone.

  470. I remember being

  471. asked,

  472. as a kind of

  473. young Christian,

  474. how did

  475. Old Testament

  476. believers

  477. become Christians,

  478. if I can put it

  479. like that?

  480. and I remember

  481. it was like

  482. a lightbulb moment.

  483. It was like

  484. a lightbulb moment.

  485. That they

  486. become Christians

  487. in exactly

  488. the same way

  489. that you and I do.

  490. That by faith

  491. we look back

  492. to what Christ

  493. has done.

  494. By faith

  495. they grasp

  496. the promise

  497. and they look

  498. forward to

  499. what Christ

  500. has done.

  501. I think Paul

  502. is also speaking

  503. here in terms

  504. of Christian

  505. experience.

  506. That we receive

  507. forgiveness

  508. of sins

  509. by faith

  510. in Jesus

  511. Christ

  512. and by faith

  513. in Jesus

  514. Christ alone.

  515. And we have

  516. to be absolutely

  517. clear because

  518. the drift of

  519. our hearts

  520. is the opposite

  521. way.

  522. That we don't

  523. begin by faith

  524. and finish

  525. by works.

  526. We don't

  527. begin by the

  528. spirit

  529. and finish

  530. by the flesh.

  531. We don't

  532. get our foot

  533. in the door

  534. by the gospel

  535. and then it's

  536. entirely up to

  537. us.

  538. The promise

  539. was given

  540. to Abraham

  541. and it

  542. was a

  543. promise

  544. that at

  545. the heart

  546. of it

  547. a promise

  548. of Jesus.

  549. A promise

  550. of the

  551. provision

  552. of God

  553. in the

  554. gospel.

  555. The law

  556. cannot

  557. undo

  558. justification

  559. by faith.

  560. The law

  561. cannot

  562. undo

  563. your right

  564. standing

  565. with God

  566. through faith

  567. in Jesus

  568. Christ.

  569. It is not

  570. justification

  571. by faith

  572. and then

  573. sanctification

  574. by works.

  575. The law

  576. cannot

  577. undo

  578. the promise.

  579. It's a

  580. beautiful

  581. verse,

  582. verse 17.

  583. You need

  584. to meditate

  585. on it

  586. this week.

  587. The law

  588. does not

  589. annul

  590. God's

  591. covenant.

  592. It's an

  593. amazing thing.

  594. The law

  595. cannot

  596. undo

  597. the promise

  598. and so

  599. you look

  600. to the

  601. promise.

  602. But then

  603. secondly,

  604. Paul makes

  605. a positive

  606. statement.

  607. What can

  608. the law

  609. do?

  610. What does

  611. the law

  612. do?

  613. What then

  614. is the

  615. function

  616. of the

  617. law?

  618. If the

  619. law cannot

  620. undo

  621. the promise,

  622. what's the

  623. function

  624. of the

  625. law?

  626. Now the

  627. Reformation

  628. understood

  629. God's

  630. law in

  631. three ways.

  632. It says

  633. there's

  634. three uses

  635. of the

  636. law.

  637. I know

  638. it's been

  639. hard work

  640. this morning

  641. but stick

  642. with me.

  643. First of

  644. all, it

  645. talks about

  646. the civil

  647. use of

  648. the law.

  649. And so

  650. the use

  651. of God's

  652. law in

  653. society,

  654. this is

  655. God's

  656. world,

  657. God's

  658. law.

  659. The use

  660. of the

  661. law in

  662. framing

  663. society

  664. after the

  665. Ten

  666. Commandments.

  667. The rules

  668. and the

  669. regulations

  670. for ordinary

  671. society

  672. was God's

  673. law.

  674. And there's

  675. a sense

  676. in which

  677. God's

  678. law was

  679. given

  680. to bring

  681. civilization.

  682. The use

  683. of the

  684. law in

  685. civil life

  686. to

  687. restrain

  688. public

  689. wickedness

  690. and

  691. maintain

  692. order

  693. in

  694. society.

  695. Of

  696. course

  697. you see

  698. that

  699. fully

  700. in the

  701. nation

  702. of

  703. Israel

  704. in the

  705. Old

  706. Testament

  707. but that

  708. still

  709. stands

  710. today.

  711. We see

  712. the

  713. disaster

  714. that

  715. comes

  716. upon

  717. a

  718. country

  719. that

  720. gives

  721. itself

  722. up

  723. on

  724. God's

  725. law.

  726. But there's

  727. a second

  728. use of

  729. the

  730. law.

  731. And it's

  732. what we

  733. see here

  734. in the

  735. Apostle

  736. Paul.

  737. He says

  738. the law

  739. is a

  740. guardian

  741. or a

  742. pedagogue,

  743. a teacher.

  744. Then there's a

  745. third use of

  746. the law

  747. where it's

  748. a kind of

  749. didactic sense.

  750. The law

  751. as a rule

  752. for life

  753. it is to

  754. guide our

  755. behavior as

  756. believers

  757. to reflect the

  758. blessings of

  759. the grace

  760. which we've

  761. received.

  762. It sets a

  763. pattern for

  764. the Christian

  765. law.

  766. But what

  767. Paul is

  768. doing in

  769. verse 19

  770. is he's

  771. saying about

  772. that second

  773. use of

  774. the law

  775. that it is

  776. a teacher,

  777. it is a

  778. guardian.

  779. it was

  780. added because

  781. of

  782. transgressions,

  783. rebellion.

  784. It was

  785. added because

  786. of transgressions.

  787. There's a

  788. sense in

  789. which the

  790. law only

  791. multiplies

  792. our need.

  793. The law

  794. only multiplies

  795. our sinfulness.

  796. It only

  797. shuts us up.

  798. Look at what

  799. it says in

  800. verse 22.

  801. He talks

  802. about the

  803. scriptures

  804. there.

  805. The

  806. scriptures

  807. imprisoned

  808. everything.

  809. The

  810. scripture

  811. imprisoned

  812. everything

  813. under sin

  814. so that

  815. the promise

  816. by faith

  817. in Jesus

  818. Christ

  819. might be

  820. given to

  821. those who

  822. believe.

  823. When the

  824. law comes

  825. it demonstrates

  826. what sin

  827. is.

  828. When the

  829. law comes

  830. it magnifies

  831. our sin

  832. and our

  833. failure

  834. and our

  835. inability

  836. and our

  837. bondage.

  838. There is a

  839. sense in

  840. which when

  841. the law

  842. comes all

  843. it does

  844. is kill

  845. and destroy

  846. and imprison.

  847. The world

  848. thinks in

  849. this way

  850. the world

  851. thinks that

  852. the obligation

  853. to do

  854. something

  855. implies the

  856. ability to

  857. do it.

  858. That's how

  859. the world

  860. thinks.

  861. The world

  862. thinks if

  863. you are

  864. obliged to

  865. do

  866. something

  867. then you

  868. must have

  869. the ability

  870. to do

  871. it.

  872. The

  873. Bible

  874. however

  875. flips that

  876. on its

  877. head.

  878. You

  879. are under

  880. obligation

  881. but you

  882. cannot

  883. obey.

  884. That's the

  885. frustration

  886. isn't it?

  887. the difficulty

  888. of God's

  889. law is

  890. it says

  891. do this

  892. and you

  893. and I

  894. cannot do

  895. it.

  896. The law

  897. says go

  898. here

  899. and you

  900. find yourself

  901. going in the

  902. opposite direction.

  903. And when the

  904. law came

  905. Paul here is

  906. speaking perhaps

  907. about the

  908. history of

  909. redemption

  910. but also

  911. when we

  912. speak about

  913. our experience

  914. this is how

  915. we experience

  916. the law.

  917. so think

  918. with me

  919. about

  920. Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  921. chapter 7

  922. in fact

  923. come back

  924. with me

  925. to Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  926. chapter 7

  927. Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  928. chapter 7

  929. and verse

  930. 7

  931. where Paul

  932. says this

  933. he says

  934. and what

  935. then

  936. shall we

  937. say

  938. Romans

    Romans 7:7

  939. 7

  940. verse 7

  941. what

  942. then

  943. shall

  944. we

  945. say

  946. that

  947. the

  948. law

  949. is

  950. sin

  951. by

  952. no

  953. means

  954. yet

  955. if it

  956. had not

  957. been

  958. for the

  959. law

  960. I

  961. would

  962. not

  963. have

  964. known

  965. sin

  966. for I

  967. would

  968. not

  969. have

  970. known

  971. what

  972. it

  973. is

  974. to

  975. covet

  976. if

  977. the

  978. law

  979. had

  980. said

  981. you

  982. shall

  983. not

  984. covet

  985. but

  986. sin

  987. seizing

  988. an

  989. opportunity

  990. through

  991. the

  992. commandment

  993. produced

  994. in me

  995. all

  996. kinds

  997. of

  998. covetlessness

  999. for

  1000. apart

  1001. from

  1002. the

  1003. law

  1004. sin

  1005. lies

  1006. dead

  1007. I

  1008. was

  1009. once

  1010. alive

  1011. apart

  1012. from

  1013. the

  1014. law

  1015. but

  1016. when

  1017. the

  1018. commandment

  1019. came

  1020. sin

  1021. came

  1022. alive

  1023. and I

  1024. died

  1025. what's

  1026. he

  1027. saying

  1028. there

  1029. he's

  1030. !

  1031. talking

  1032. about

  1033. his

  1034. life

  1035. as

  1036. a

  1037. Pharisee

  1038. as

  1039. a

  1040. religious

  1041. man

  1042. he's

  1043. talking

  1044. about

  1045. his

  1046. life

  1047. before

  1048. he

  1049. became

  1050. Christian

  1051. he

  1052. was

  1053. alive

  1054. once

  1055. that's

  1056. how

  1057. he

  1058. felt

  1059. he

  1060. felt

  1061. he

  1062. was

  1063. alive

  1064. a

  1065. man

  1066. full

  1067. of

  1068. vigour

  1069. and

  1070. moral

  1071. power

  1072. but

  1073. then

  1074. the

  1075. law

  1076. of

  1077. God

  1078. came

  1079. and

  1080. it

  1081. convicted

  1082. him

  1083. and

  1084. it

  1085. incarcerated

  1086. him

  1087. and

  1088. it

  1089. put

  1090. him

  1091. in

  1092. prison

  1093. and

  1094. shut

  1095. him

  1096. up

  1097. and

  1098. it

  1099. showed

  1100. the

  1101. apostle

  1102. Paul

  1103. that

  1104. he

  1105. couldn't

  1106. do

  1107. what

  1108. God

  1109. was

  1110. asking

  1111. him

  1112. to

  1113. do

  1114. it

  1115. showed

  1116. him

  1117. his

  1118. inability

  1119. it

  1120. showed

  1121. him

  1122. his

  1123. sinfulness

  1124. and

  1125. his

  1126. wretchedness

  1127. it

  1128. only

  1129. demonstrated

  1130. that

  1131. he

  1132. couldn't

  1133. save

  1134. himself

  1135. when

  1136. the

  1137. law

  1138. came

  1139. he

  1140. died

  1141. he

  1142. felt

  1143. once

  1144. he

  1145. felt

  1146. alive

  1147. he

  1148. felt

  1149. he

  1150. was

  1151. full

  1152. of

  1153. life

  1154. and

  1155. vigour

  1156. our

  1157. friends

  1158. who are

  1159. not

  1160. Christians

  1161. they're

  1162. not

  1163. gloomy

  1164. in the

  1165. main

  1166. they're

  1167. not

  1168. always

  1169. down

  1170. they

  1171. are

  1172. alive

  1173. without

  1174. the

  1175. law

  1176. and

  1177. then

  1178. the

  1179. law

  1180. comes

  1181. when

  1182. they

  1183. understand

  1184. it

  1185. and

  1186. it

  1187. shows

  1188. them

  1189. their

  1190. inability

  1191. and

  1192. it

  1193. shows

  1194. them

  1195. their

  1196. sinfulness

  1197. and

  1198. it

  1199. shows

  1200. them

  1201. their

  1202. need

  1203. !

  1204. and

  1205. it

  1206. it's

  1207. like

  1208. being

  1209. imprisoned

  1210. it's

  1211. like

  1212. the

  1213. rich

  1214. young

  1215. ruler

  1216. he

  1217. comes

  1218. to

  1219. Jesus

  1220. and

  1221. he

  1222. says

  1223. to

  1224. Jesus

  1225. this

  1226. amazing

  1227. question

  1228. what

  1229. must

  1230. I

  1231. do

  1232. to

  1233. inherit

  1234. eternal

  1235. life

  1236. and

  1237. Jesus

  1238. says

  1239. you

  1240. know

  1241. the

  1242. ten

  1243. commandments

  1244. go

  1245. and

  1246. do

  1247. them

  1248. the

  1249. rich

  1250. young

  1251. ruler

  1252. says

  1253. well

  1254. all

  1255. these

  1256. I've

  1257. kept

  1258. since

  1259. I

  1260. was

  1261. a

  1262. boy

  1263. he

  1264. hasn't

  1265. understood

  1266. the

  1267. law

  1268. he

  1269. feels

  1270. he's

  1271. !

  1272. he

  1273. feels

  1274. full

  1275. of

  1276. moral

  1277. courage

  1278. and

  1279. virtue

  1280. he

  1281. says

  1282. to

  1283. Jesus

  1284. all

  1285. these

  1286. I've

  1287. kept

  1288. since

  1289. I

  1290. was a

  1291. boy

  1292. was his

  1293. problem

  1294. he

  1295. didn't

  1296. understand

  1297. it

  1298. Paul

  1299. talks

  1300. in

  1301. Philippians

  1302. 3

  1303. concerning

  1304. zeal

  1305. he

  1306. talks

  1307. about

  1308. his

  1309. life

  1310. before

  1311. he

  1312. became

  1313. a

  1314. Christian

  1315. concerning

  1316. zeal

  1317. as

  1318. to

  1319. the

  1320. law

  1321. as

  1322. to

  1323. righteousness

  1324. under

  1325. the

  1326. law

  1327. blameless

  1328. that's

  1329. what I

  1330. thought I

  1331. was

  1332. that's

  1333. how I

  1334. felt

  1335. I felt

  1336. alive

  1337. and

  1338. then

  1339. the

  1340. law

  1341. and

  1342. it

  1343. handed

  1344. me

  1345. in

  1346. and

  1347. Paul

  1348. uses

  1349. two

  1350. metaphors

  1351. one of

  1352. the

  1353. metaphors

  1354. that he

  1355. uses

  1356. is

  1357. this

  1358. metaphor

  1359. of

  1360. a

  1361. pedagogue

  1362. !

  1363. or a

  1364. guardian!

  1365. He

  1366. uses

  1367. the

  1368. image

  1369. of a

  1370. prison

  1371. guard

  1372. but

  1373. he

  1374. also

  1375. uses

  1376. this

  1377. metaphor

  1378. of a

  1379. pedagogue

  1380. a

  1381. pedagogue

  1382. in

  1383. Greek

  1384. or

  1385. Roman

  1386. culture

  1387. was

  1388. a

  1389. man

  1390. usually

  1391. was

  1392. a

  1393. slave

  1394. and

  1395. that

  1396. slave

  1397. would

  1398. be

  1399. hired

  1400. to

  1401. disciple

  1402. and

  1403. train

  1404. and

  1405. teach

  1406. the

  1407. child

  1408. and

  1409. he

  1410. would

  1411. go

  1412. everywhere

  1413. with

  1414. him

  1415. he

  1416. would

  1417. go

  1418. to

  1419. school

  1420. with

  1421. the

  1422. child

  1423. he

  1424. would

  1425. discipline

  1426. the

  1427. child

  1428. all

  1429. with

  1430. a

  1431. view

  1432. to

  1433. disciplining

  1434. him

  1435. that's

  1436. what

  1437. the

  1438. law

  1439. does

  1440. it

  1441. disciplines

  1442. us

  1443. the

  1444. law

  1445. hangs

  1446. us

  1447. in

  1448. the

  1449. law

  1450. is

  1451. like

  1452. one

  1453. of

  1454. those

  1455. sheep

  1456. dogs

  1457. in

  1458. a

  1459. sheep

  1460. trial

  1461. kind

  1462. of

  1463. biting

  1464. on

  1465. our

  1466. feet

  1467. trying

  1468. to

  1469. get

  1470. us

  1471. to

  1472. where

  1473. we

  1474. need

  1475. to

  1476. go

  1477. to

  1478. and

  1479. the

  1480. law

  1481. is

  1482. like

  1483. all

  1484. of

  1485. those

  1486. restraints

  1487. and

  1488. you

  1489. it

  1490. pushes

  1491. you

  1492. and

  1493. it

  1494. prods

  1495. you

  1496. until

  1497. you

  1498. realise

  1499. there

  1500. is

  1501. only

  1502. one

  1503. place

  1504. to

  1505. go

  1506. and

  1507. the

  1508. only

  1509. place

  1510. that

  1511. you

  1512. can

  1513. go

  1514. the

  1515. law

  1516. teaches

  1517. us

  1518. is

  1519. to

  1520. Jesus

  1521. Christ

  1522. what

  1523. does

  1524. the

  1525. law

  1526. do

  1527. the

  1528. law

  1529. drives

  1530. us

  1531. to

  1532. Jesus

  1533. Christ

  1534. the

  1535. law

  1536. kicks

  1537. away

  1538. our

  1539. self

  1540. reliance

  1541. and

  1542. it

  1543. drives

  1544. us

  1545. to

  1546. faith

  1547. and

  1548. to

  1549. faith

  1550. alone

  1551. and

  1552. not

  1553. just

  1554. for

  1555. our

  1556. justification

  1557. that's

  1558. Paul's

  1559. point

  1560. it's

  1561. not

  1562. just

  1563. for

  1564. our

  1565. justification

  1566. the

  1567. law

  1568. cannot

  1569. make

  1570. you

  1571. right

  1572. with

  1573. God

  1574. but

  1575. the

  1576. law

  1577. cannot

  1578. sanctify

  1579. you

  1580. it

  1581. cannot

  1582. make

  1583. you

  1584. more

  1585. holy

  1586. there

  1587. is

  1588. a

  1589. view

  1590. isn't

  1591. there

  1592. in

  1593. churches

  1594. like

  1595. ours

  1596. where

  1597. you're

  1598. justified

  1599. by

  1600. faith

  1601. but

  1602. you're

  1603. sanctified

  1604. by

  1605. the

  1606. law

  1607. and

  1608. that

  1609. is

  1610. a

  1611. disaster

  1612. because

  1613. we're

  1614. never

  1615. able

  1616. to

  1617. do

  1618. it

  1619. any

  1620. obedience

  1621. we are

  1622. to

  1623. offer

  1624. to

  1625. the

  1626. law

  1627. and

  1628. we

  1629. are

  1630. to

  1631. walk

  1632. by

  1633. the

  1634. fruit

  1635. of

  1636. the

  1637. Holy

  1638. Spirit

  1639. we

  1640. do

  1641. so

  1642. by

  1643. the

  1644. strength

  1645. and

  1646. the

  1647. power

  1648. of

  1649. the

  1650. Holy

  1651. Spirit

  1652. in

  1653. union

  1654. and

  1655. communion

  1656. with

  1657. Jesus

  1658. Christ

  1659. because

  1660. apart

  1661. from

  1662. the

  1663. Lord

  1664. Jesus

  1665. we

  1666. can

  1667. do

  1668. nothing

  1669. but

  1670. there

  1671. is

  1672. a

  1673. view

  1674. isn't

  1675. there

  1676. that

  1677. Paul

  1678. is

  1679. addressing

  1680. !

  1681. here

  1682. !

  1683. those

  1684. who

  1685. begin

  1686. by

  1687. faith

  1688. and

  1689. that

  1690. they

  1691. are

  1692. made

  1693. perfect

  1694. by

  1695. the

  1696. flesh

  1697. and

  1698. Paul

  1699. says

  1700. no

  1701. that's

  1702. nonsense

  1703. it's

  1704. a way

  1705. of

  1706. disaster

  1707. and

  1708. it's

  1709. a way

  1710. of

  1711. ruin

  1712. and

  1713. so

  1714. what

  1715. is

  1716. the

  1717. function

  1718. of

  1719. the

  1720. law

  1721. some

  1722. of

  1723. you

  1724. are

  1725. wondering

  1726. well

  1727. what

  1728. is

  1729. the

  1730. function

  1731. of

  1732. the

  1733. law

  1734. in

  1735. the

  1736. life

  1737. of

  1738. a

  1739. Christian

  1740. are

  1741. Christians

  1742. obligated

  1743. to

  1744. obey

  1745. the

  1746. Ten

  1747. Commandments

  1748. the

  1749. answer

  1750. to that

  1751. is

  1752. of

  1753. course

  1754. you've

  1755. got to

  1756. read

  1757. Galatians

    Galatians 5:6

  1758. chapter 5

  1759. verse 6

  1760. where

  1761. Paul

  1762. gives

  1763. lots

  1764. of

  1765. prohibitions

  1766. and

  1767. lots

  1768. of

  1769. commands

  1770. do

  1771. this

  1772. and

  1773. don't

  1774. do

  1775. that

  1776. but

  1777. his

  1778. point

  1779. is

  1780. this

  1781. any

  1782. obedience

  1783. that we

  1784. offer

  1785. is

  1786. not

  1787. our

  1788. obedience

  1789. solely

  1790. it is

  1791. because

  1792. we are

  1793. united

  1794. by

  1795. faith

  1796. to

  1797. the

  1798. Lord

  1799. Jesus

  1800. Christ

  1801. and

  1802. it's

  1803. only

  1804. because

  1805. we are

  1806. cleansed

  1807. and

  1808. forgiven

  1809. and the

  1810. promise

  1811. has been

  1812. given

  1813. to us

  1814. that

  1815. cannot

  1816. be

  1817. annulled

  1818. and

  1819. cannot

  1820. be

  1821. taken

  1822. away

  1823. and

  1824. so

  1825. trusting

  1826. in

  1827. that

  1828. promise

  1829. we are

  1830. free

  1831. to

  1832. obey

  1833. God's

  1834. law

  1835. and

  1836. so

  1837. he

  1838. addresses

  1839. you

  1840. today

  1841. you

  1842. who

  1843. have

  1844. come

  1845. this

  1846. morning

  1847. bowed

  1848. down

  1849. beneath

  1850. a load

  1851. of care

  1852. and a load

  1853. of guilt

  1854. you

  1855. who have

  1856. come

  1857. and you

  1858. are

  1859. aware

  1860. that

  1861. you've

  1862. sinned

  1863. and you've

  1864. fallen

  1865. short

  1866. of the

  1867. glory

  1868. of God

  1869. like

  1870. all

  1871. of us

  1872. have

  1873. and

  1874. you've

  1875. not done

  1876. the

  1877. things

  1878. that you've

  1879. promised

  1880. to do

  1881. and you've

  1882. not lived

  1883. up to the

  1884. vows you made

  1885. last Sunday

  1886. and it

  1887. weighs on

  1888. you

  1889. it weighs

  1890. on you

  1891. there is

  1892. within each

  1893. one of us

  1894. a recovering

  1895. pharisaical

  1896. mode

  1897. that operates

  1898. in our minds

  1899. there's a view

  1900. in our minds

  1901. that we've got

  1902. from somewhere

  1903. that Jesus

  1904. brings us

  1905. to the front

  1906. door

  1907. he opens

  1908. the passenger

  1909. side

  1910. and he

  1911. says

  1912. you're

  1913. on your

  1914. own

  1915. from now

  1916. on

  1917. the rest

  1918. of life

  1919. is entirely

  1920. up to

  1921. you

  1922. but the

  1923. law of

  1924. God

  1925. drives us

  1926. to Jesus

  1927. Christ

  1928. and to

  1929. the gospel

  1930. and so we

  1931. are justified

  1932. by faith

  1933. and we

  1934. live

  1935. by faith

  1936. in the

  1937. Lord Jesus

  1938. Christ

  1939. let's

  1940. pray
