  1. We've been working our way through this book and we come to Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  2. ! It's page 975. Galatians chapter 5, let me read you verse 1.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  3. ! For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm therefore, and do not submit

  4. again to a yoke of slavery. I'm not sure freedom is the first word that comes to people's mind

  5. when they think of Christians. I think if we were going to do a poll on the streets today

  6. and we asked people what impression they had of us, I'm guessing that the words that would

  7. come up are words like careful, and for some of us uptight, a little stuffy. For others,

  8. people might say, well they're quite happy, they're quite joyful, but probably way down

  9. the list would come the word free. I might be wrong about that. I might hear this week

  10. about a young man that I know who's decided to abandon his Christian faith. He did it back in

  11. November, and a few weeks afterwards he told friends of mine that his giving up the Christian

  12. faith was in verse 5. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of

  13. righteousness. For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything,

  14. but only faith working through love.

  15. The book of Galatians is, I want to say, mainly about this doctrine of justification by faith.

  16. Justification, being declared right with God, is a future event which is made present in our lives

  17. today, right now, by faith. Justification is the verdict of God on the last day. It's going to be

  18. on the day of judgment when we appear before him. God will say, he looks at us and he will say,

  19. this is my child, this is my son whom I love, with whom I'm well pleased. That's what he'll say of all

  20. those who are in Christ. There is no record of any sin here put to that account. She is clothed

  21. in the righteousness of my son. He is innocent and pure and beautiful before me. You are justified.

  22. And the greatest test about whether you have begun to understand this is, do you eagerly hope for that

  23. righteousness? The verdict's been declared to us already. And do you eagerly wait for that last day?

  24. And I don't think that's an easy thing to do.

  25. If you're anything like me, I look at my own life and what do I see? I see failure and sin and lost

  26. opportunities. As we worked through the early part of the service this morning and we hear the law of

  27. God read. As we hear Jesus' summary of the law, that I'm to love the Lord my God with all my heart

  28. and soul and mind and strength and I'm to love my neighbor as myself. That summary of the law.

  29. I don't know about you, but I never think when I hear those words, I've done it this week.

  30. I've nailed it this week. I've done great this week. None of us feel that. If you feel like that,

  31. come and talk to me afterwards, all right? None of us think, I've done really well,

  32. as Reuben read the Ten Commandments this week.

  33. And to say, I look forward to that day when I will stand before him can only be said

  34. when you are basing that on the death of Jesus Christ for me. So false teachers, false apostles

  35. have come into Galicia and they've agreed, they've agreed that we become Christians by justification.

  36. The problem comes after that. Because we're sinful people, because we sin every day, and if you don't

  37. think you sin every day, well again you need to come and chat with me, our consciences condemn us.

  38. We've got so much to condemn us for, haven't we? Satan accuses us and he's got so much to work with

  39. in my heart and your heart. But here's the thing, the certain way back into slavery is what Paul calls

  40. here the way of circumcision. I don't think any of you here are tempted to be circumcised this morning.

  41. So what is he talking about? It's talking about the way of religious obligation,

  42. which is beginning not to look at the death of Jesus,

  43. but to look at what I've done, to look at my moral achievement or my religious sincerity,

  44. or to look at anything that is within me. You see, in the cross of Jesus Christ, he gives us a freedom

  45. which is from outside the world, and that stretches from eternity to eternity, and it comes directly from him.

  46. And this freedom is being able to look at our own lives, and look at God, and say,

  47. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me,

  48. and I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

  49. And it is freedom,

  50. because it is a process of transformation inside of us. It is completely different to moral reformation.

  51. It is being redeemed and not improved.

  52. It is true freedom.

  53. And God does not set me free from my bad record in order for me to start achieving and building a better one.

  54. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

  55. And I find it hard to describe. It is the purest form of freedom,

  56. that I am absolutely and completely righteous before God,

  57. and so are you through faith in Christ.

  58. And so it is not the level of my surrender.

  59. It is not the strength of my faith, thank goodness.

  60. It is not the number of my prayers.

  61. It is not the length of my obedience.

  62. It is not the level of my purity,

  63. nor is it the depth of my repentance.

  64. But it is Christ and Christ alone who loved me and gave himself for me.

  65. So you see, when I do something good,

  66. when I've kept up with my New Year Bible reading plan,

  67. and I'm up to date,

  68. and when I do something good on those occasions,

  69. when I do something good,

  70. it doesn't change God's love for me.

  71. He does not accept me anymore if I've had a good week.

  72. And if I fail him,

  73. it does not change his love for me.

  74. He doesn't love me any less than he did before,

  75. because through the Spirit, by faith,

  76. we wait for the hope of righteousness.

  77. We do not obey

  78. because he will accept us more,

  79. but because he will never leave us nor forsake us.

  80. And so it is very possible, isn't it?

  81. It's very possible to start out by faith,

  82. to experience the grace of God,

  83. and then suddenly to want to go back to the law.

  84. To be thinking that God is in my debt.

  85. I deserve what he gives me.

  86. And we begin to think about what we might have given up.

  87. And then we begin to compare ourselves horizontally with others,

  88. and we resent that my life is not as good as their life.

  89. Why hasn't God treated me like he's treating them?

  90. You see, Jesus did not owe it to us

  91. to die upon the cross.

  92. Jesus did not deserve to die,

  93. but he determines freely to go to the cross

  94. out of the freedom of his own grace.

  95. And the man nailed to the cross,

  96. offering himself for us,

  97. that is the freest action that the world has ever seen.

  98. And that's why Paul says in verse 6,

  99. in Christ Jesus,

  100. neither circumcision or uncircumcision

  101. is of any relevance,

  102. but only faith

  103. expressing itself through love.

  104. They are remarkable words, aren't they?

  105. How do you live the Christian life?

  106. Somebody says,

  107. how is it that you live the Christian life?

  108. What does the Christian life look at?

  109. Look at it.

  110. There are five words

  111. at the end of verse 6.

  112. Faith working through love.

  113. That's four words.

  114. You might notice faith expressing itself through love.

  115. But faith working through love.

  116. Faith will express itself through love.

  117. We are justified.

  118. We are declared right with God

  119. by faith alone.

  120. By faith alone.

  121. But if faith is real,

  122. and if faith is genuine,

  123. it will always be accompanied by love.

  124. And so we're going to look at next week

  125. from verses 13 onwards,

  126. we're going to see,

  127. here's the thing for the Galatians

  128. and the false teachers.

  129. They were saying,

  130. you've been justified,

  131. and you've got to make sure

  132. you're accepted before God

  133. through your religious observance,

  134. through your acts.

  135. And Paul says,

  136. no,

  137. it's the cross of Jesus Christ

  138. which brings us in,

  139. and it's the cross of Jesus Christ

  140. which keeps us on track,

  141. and it's the cross of Jesus Christ

  142. that will bring us home to heaven.

  143. It's the cross that brings you in,

  144. it's the cross that keeps you on track,

  145. it's the cross that will take you to heaven.

  146. And in the end,

  147. it is all of Christ.

  148. And our freedom comes from the fact

  149. that we are justified

  150. the hope of righteousness.

  151. Now how can the Holy Spirit

  152. live in you and in me

  153. with all the sin of our lives?

  154. How can he live in us

  155. with all the sin

  156. and all the mess of our lives?

  157. And it can only be

  158. because we're justified.

  159. How can we pray this morning?

  160. How can we sing?

  161. How can we live?

  162. It's only because we've been justified.

  163. And this is the gospel work

  164. of freedom in us.

  165. And Paul says,

  166. do not budge,

  167. do not move,

  168. stand firm

  169. in that freedom.

  170. Secondly, and more briefly,

  171. let's look at making slaves.

  172. How does slavery happen to you?

  173. How did it happen to the Galatians?

  174. How does that happen to us?

  175. Verse 2,

  176. Paul says now,

  177. I, Paul,

  178. say to you

  179. that if you accept,

  180. if you receive circumcision,

  181. Christ

  182. will be of no advantage

  183. to you.

  184. I testify again

  185. to every man

  186. who accepts circumcision

  187. that he's obligated,

  188. that he is bound

  189. to keep the whole law.

  190. You are severed,

  191. you are cut off

  192. from Christ,

  193. you who would be justified

  194. by the law.

  195. You have fallen

  196. away from grace.

  197. Four times there,

  198. he mentions circumcision.

  199. That cutting off

  200. of the flesh.

  201. Four times,

  202. he talks about

  203. that Jewish historic right

  204. of the covenant.

  205. The sign of the covenant.

  206. A circumcision

  207. that's got impeccable

  208. religious pedigree.

  209. And Paul says

  210. in the starkest possible terms

  211. that if you go ahead

  212. and you receive circumcision,

  213. remember they've come

  214. from a pagan background,

  215. and he says,

  216. if you think that

  217. by being circumcised

  218. you keep going

  219. as the people of God,

  220. Christ

  221. will be of no value to you.

  222. You'll be severed,

  223. you'll be cut off.

  224. It's a play on words

  225. from Christ.

  226. You will have fallen

  227. away from grace.

  228. And you might think

  229. that's a bit strange,

  230. isn't it?

  231. That's strange

  232. in the light of the fact

  233. that the apostle Paul

  234. took Timothy

  235. in Acts chapter 16

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  236. and Paul had him circumcised

  237. when he joined

  238. the mission team.

  239. But the reason

  240. is very simple.

  241. Is that the teachers,

  242. these new teachers,

  243. they are saying

  244. that the death of Jesus,

  245. it is enough

  246. to get you in,

  247. yeah, okay,

  248. but it is not enough

  249. to help you grow

  250. and to continue.

  251. And they are insisting

  252. on this impeccably fine

  253. religious way

  254. to help Jesus along.

  255. And it's really important

  256. for you and I

  257. to see this

  258. because false teaching

  259. in the church

  260. very rarely denies

  261. that Jesus is the Son of God.

  262. or it does not deny

  263. that Jesus died

  264. on the cross.

  265. But what it does

  266. is it says

  267. that we would be safer

  268. with God

  269. if we just add

  270. a little bit to that.

  271. If we add

  272. some religious practice

  273. or some virtue

  274. that we can do,

  275. we add that

  276. to what Jesus has done.

  277. And it's the constant temptation

  278. of my heart

  279. and your heart.

  280. The constant danger

  281. throughout the history

  282. of the church

  283. has been to try

  284. and complete

  285. what Jesus has done.

  286. To begin to operate

  287. as if we've got something

  288. to add to the ministry

  289. of Jesus

  290. on the cross.

  291. And what we do

  292. is we take

  293. perfectly good things

  294. in themselves

  295. and we begin

  296. to insist

  297. that my effectiveness

  298. and my usefulness

  299. and my growth

  300. as a Christian

  301. depends

  302. not on Jesus Christ

  303. but on

  304. that something else

  305. in addition to Christ.

  306. And Paul says here

  307. everyone

  308. who receives circumcision

  309. is bound.

  310. They are obligated

  311. to keep the whole

  312. of the law.

  313. And I think

  314. that's quite devastating.

  315. Why is Paul

  316. the apostle

  317. making such a fuss?

  318. I mean

  319. all the teaching

  320. of the Bible

  321. all the teaching

  322. of the gospel

  323. hones in

  324. on this one little point.

  325. On this one

  326. absurd

  327. trivial

  328. religious right.

  329. And so in every age

  330. there have been teachers

  331. in the church

  332. who've said

  333. it's a very small thing.

  334. why make such a fuss?

  335. If you've been

  336. on the eldership

  337. in Galatia

  338. in one of the churches

  339. and there's teachers

  340. of the law

  341. who'd come along

  342. and say

  343. listen

  344. we just need

  345. to keep

  346. certain feast days.

  347. We need to abstain

  348. from certain foods.

  349. We need

  350. just the

  351. boys of the church

  352. to be circumcised.

  353. I wonder

  354. what we'd have done.

  355. Maybe we would have

  356. welcomed it.

  357. Maybe we would have

  358. thought well it's an

  359. alternative understanding

  360. of Christian spirituality.

  361. It's not my position

  362. but I understand

  363. where you're coming from

  364. and it's not going to hurt

  365. anyone else.

  366. But what is really

  367. at stake

  368. when you do that?

  369. A few years ago

  370. I was working

  371. upstairs in

  372. Cafe Nero

  373. at Ealing Broadway

  374. and I began to notice

  375. there were people

  376. at the tables

  377. at the cafe

  378. in

  379. Cafe Nero

  380. who had

  381. their Bibles opened.

  382. I don't know if you've seen that.

  383. And so what do you do

  384. when you see somebody

  385. with a Bible open?

  386. You're so glad

  387. you go over to them

  388. and you say

  389. you say it's quite as you can

  390. I'm actually a Christian

  391. it's a great book isn't it?

  392. It's a great book.

  393. And they were very very friendly

  394. they began to talk to me

  395. they began to talk about

  396. the Lord Jesus

  397. they found out I was a minister

  398. they found out I came to this church

  399. and they wanted to know about it

  400. and we exchanged numbers.

  401. They go to a Bible study

  402. in central London

  403. loads and loads of young people

  404. 20s and 30s

  405. and it would be great

  406. why don't you come along

  407. why don't you bring

  408. some of your people to come along?

  409. And we began to engage

  410. they began to ask

  411. what I thought about different things

  412. and then they began to ask

  413. about baptism.

  414. And what was really interesting

  415. is they were part of a church

  416. called the London

  417. well it isn't the church

  418. it's a sect

  419. they're called the London

  420. International Church of Christ

  421. I don't know whether you've met them.

  422. And what they're teaching was

  423. was this really

  424. when you boil down to it

  425. that you could not be saved

  426. unless you'd been fully baptised

  427. by one of their authorised leaders.

  428. You could not be

  429. a Christian

  430. you could not be a child of God

  431. unless you had been

  432. fully baptised

  433. by one of their recognised leaders.

  434. It was a gospel plus.

  435. It was Jesus plus.

  436. You've got to be baptised by us.

  437. You've got to do what

  438. we tell you to do.

  439. And the Apostle Paul says

  440. something very very simple

  441. he says this

  442. if you add something to Jesus

  443. Jesus vanishes.

  444. Christ plus circumcision.

  445. Christ plus anything

  446. leaves you with nothing.

  447. And if you add circumcision to Christ

  448. you're seeking to complete

  449. the work of Jesus on the cross.

  450. You cannot have Jesus

  451. do half the work of saving us.

  452. Either he does all the work

  453. of saving us

  454. or none at all.

  455. And you see the way

  456. that it works

  457. look at verse 9

  458. Paul says

  459. a little leaven

  460. leavens the whole lump.

  461. And do you remember lockdown?

  462. Those glorious days of lockdown.

  463. Different things went there.

  464. People got into making bread.

  465. Remember that?

  466. And everyone was making bread

  467. and I didn't make it surprisingly.

  468. But you get a little bit of yeast

  469. don't you?

  470. And you put it into the

  471. pan pot.

  472. And you put it into the dough

  473. and it was amazing wasn't it?

  474. The shapes that came out

  475. before people knew

  476. what they were doing?

  477. You'd have these monsters

  478. growing in the oven.

  479. Because a tiny, tiny little bit of yeast

  480. affects the whole dough.

  481. The whole lump.

  482. And it's exactly here.

  483. The same here isn't it?

  484. Paul says this tiny little thing.

  485. This little bit of false teaching.

  486. Doesn't deny who Jesus is.

  487. Doesn't deny what he's done.

  488. But you just need something extra.

  489. And it ruins the whole lump.

  490. The devil very, very rarely

  491. goes for a full frontal attack

  492. on the gospel.

  493. But what the devil does

  494. is he just adds

  495. a little something to it.

  496. He adds something fine to it

  497. and the yeast spreads

  498. through every part.

  499. And it's very interesting

  500. is that what he does

  501. is the way that he does it

  502. is he does it

  503. through individual teachers.

  504. Individual men and women.

  505. Look at verse 10.

  506. He says,

  507. I have confidence in the Lord

  508. that you will take

  509. no other view than mine

  510. and he who is troubling you.

  511. I wonder whether he was there

  512. when this was read.

  513. It's an individual, isn't it?

  514. He who is troubling you

  515. and the one who is troubling you

  516. will bear the penalty

  517. whoever he is.

  518. I mean, until now,

  519. it's been a group of teachers.

  520. But this gospel plus teaching

  521. never enters a church

  522. in some kind of abstract form.

  523. This kind of gospel,

  524. Jesus plus,

  525. never enters,

  526. just floats its way in.

  527. It comes through individuals

  528. and this individual is clearly,

  529. isn't he,

  530. an eminent person.

  531. They know who he is

  532. and he's teaching the gospel plus.

  533. Paul earlier on has said,

  534. I don't care if it's an angel

  535. from heaven

  536. but if he teaches another gospel,

  537. whoever he is,

  538. God will judge him.

  539. Let him be accursed.

  540. And you might think,

  541. after all this kind of

  542. what we've done,

  543. kind of digging into Galatians,

  544. that the gospel plus

  545. is such a silly thing.

  546. Why is it so tempting?

  547. Why is it so tempting

  548. for churches like us

  549. just to add a little something

  550. to the gospel?

  551. It's because of verse 11.

  552. The reason is

  553. because it neutralizes

  554. the scandal of the gospel.

  555. The Christian gospel

  556. begins by offending you.

  557. It's why people don't just slide

  558. into becoming Christians.

  559. They need to feel

  560. the offense of the gospel.

  561. And if you have never been offended

  562. by the cross of Jesus Christ,

  563. you've not understood it.

  564. Because the cross of Jesus Christ

  565. comes to you and I

  566. and says,

  567. you are so far from God,

  568. you are so far from God

  569. that it required his son

  570. to be slaughtered for you.

  571. You are so lost,

  572. you're so weak,

  573. you're so rebellious

  574. that nothing less

  575. than the death of his own son

  576. is enough to free us.

  577. But the gospel plus message

  578. comes to you and says,

  579. well, it downplays the negatives

  580. and it says,

  581. you're not so radically lost.

  582. And there are things

  583. that you can do.

  584. There are things

  585. that are visible.

  586. There are things

  587. that are physical

  588. that you can do

  589. to show your sincerity

  590. that can gain your salvation.

  591. Is it not the role of religion

  592. to make you more morally responsible?

  593. Of course, the New Testament,

  594. it does call us to good works,

  595. doesn't it?

  596. But our motivation

  597. is the thing that demonstrates

  598. our freedom or our slavery.

  599. Do I do good works

  600. to assure me of God's acceptance?

  601. If I do good works

  602. to assure myself of God's acceptance,

  603. then loving other people

  604. becomes a way of manipulating you

  605. because I am loving you

  606. so that I can build my account

  607. with God.

  608. And the problem

  609. with living that way

  610. is it is a life of slavery

  611. because when something gets

  612. in the way of my loving you,

  613. I become blocked

  614. and I become angry

  615. or I become frightened

  616. or I become depressed.

  617. But when we act

  618. on the basis of Jesus Christ,

  619. then I am acting

  620. out of the fact

  621. that God has accepted me

  622. and God loves me

  623. and there is nothing

  624. that I can do

  625. that can change that.

  626. And so I am free.

  627. I am free to love

  628. for the sake of love

  629. because it is only

  630. through Jesus Christ

  631. and it is only

  632. through the cross

  633. of Jesus Christ

  634. that I am brought in.

  635. And it is only

  636. through the cross

  637. of Jesus Christ

  638. that we are grown up

  639. and it's only

  640. through the cross

  641. of Christ

  642. that we are brought

  643. to heaven.

  644. it is gloriously liberating.

  645. But I don't have

  646. to be afraid of you.

  647. I don't have to be afraid

  648. of what people think of.

  649. I don't have to be afraid

  650. of failure

  651. because the life I live,

  652. I live by faith

  653. in the Son of God

  654. who loved me

  655. and gave himself for me

  656. and God could not

  657. love me anymore.

  658. And so for freedom,

  659. Christ set us free.

  660. Stand firm, therefore.

  661. And do not submit again

  662. to the yoke of slavery.

  663. And all the people said,

  664. Amen.

  665. Let's pray.
