  1. Open your Bibles to Galatians chapter 5, Galatians chapter 5 verses 13 to 25.

Galatians 5 chapter mention Galatians 5:13–25

  2. ! I want to begin this morning by telling you what a Christian is not. It's really important

  3. ! It's really important in life to know what something is not as well as what something is.

  4. And I think in Galatians we have learned what a Christian is not. And so a Christian is not

  5. someone who turns over a new leaf. A Christian is not someone who kind of develops a new philosophy

  6. of life. A Christian is not someone who develops a kind of special interest in going to church

  7. and feels that they should get a bit more religious. A Christian is not someone who's just trying

  8. hard to do better. In fact, a Christian is not really someone who does anything at all.

  9. That at its root, a Christian is someone who has a growing realization of what God has done for them

  10. in Jesus Christ. As you come to the Lord's Table later this morning, as believers, isn't it, we come to the

  11. Lord's Table with nothing to give, no rewards to claim, no gifts that we can offer. We come to receive,

  12. don't we? We take the bread, we drink the wine. Because a Christian is someone who has a growing

  13. relationship of what God has done for them in Jesus Christ. That in the death and the resurrection

  14. of Jesus, God has completely, utterly, absolutely and eternally accepted us. And that there's nothing,

  15. nothing that we can do to make God love us more. And there's nothing, nothing that we can do to make

  16. God love us less. It has all been done. It has been done. That's when Jesus cries on the cross,

  17. tatalestai, it is finished. It's done. It has all been done in the death of Jesus Christ. And that is

  18. the great freedom which the Apostle Paul has. And the great freedom that the Apostle Paul has been

  19. brought to. And if you have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ and have received from Christ and are

  20. relying on him, you are free as well, you are free from having to justify yourself, from defend yourself

  21. before God. And I am free and you are free from having to justify myself before you and you before me.

  22. God has come to dwell in our lives, in our hearts by faith. And so we live by faith and not by sight.

  23. And we live by the Holy Spirit. But there's only one problem with that. Here's the problem. I'm

  24. going to call it the university entrance exam problem. And you often hear this from people who've come

  25. close to Christianity and they've got some kind of understanding of what the Christian gospel

  26. teaches, but they haven't really fully understood it. So here's the problem, the university entrance exam.

  27. Let's say you have a 16 year old son and you say to them, don't worry, you've already been accepted into

  28. university. And so it doesn't matter what you do with your schooling. It doesn't matter what grades you

  29. get in your A levels. It doesn't matter how good they are or how bad they are. It's okay, you have entrance

  30. into university already. What will happen? That's how the argument goes.

  31. So the 16 year old begins to think I've been accepted into university and they will not be motivated to

  32. work, will they? Are they going to become addicted to their phone or clash of clans or computer games or parties

  33. or YouTube shorts or whatever else it is that teenagers do this day? They're not going to work.

  34. And that's exactly the problem for the new Christians in Galatia. And they put their faith in Jesus Christ.

  35. The transformation has come, but they've also got troubles. And look at verse 15 of Galatians 5.

  36. And then look at Galatians 5 verse 26. And this church was having trouble. And the biting there is backbiting.

    Galatians 5:26

  37. And they were backbiting and gossiping and speaking about one another behind each other's backs. They were struggling

  38. with jealousy and arrogance. Things that you find in every Christian group. And so there's a group of new teachers

  39. that come into Galatians 5. And they use the university entrance exam argument. And they offer an illustration.

  40. And they say the problem with this message is that it leads to people just kind of living whatever they want.

  41. And so if you want to get serious, if you want to get ahead, you need to go to God's law.

  42. And you need to put yourself and come under God's law.

  43. They said there's only two ways to live. You're either a pagan and you're living for yourself.

  44. And you're gratifying the desires of your flesh. Or you're under the law and you're trying to obey God.

  45. And the Apostle Paul says, no, there's not just two options. There is a third way.

  46. And it's not the way of self-gratification.

  47. And it's not the way of moral reformation trying your hardest.

  48. But it is the way of keeping in step with the Spirit.

  49. And so the key verse for the section today is verse 25.

  50. If we live by the Spirit,

  51. let us also keep in step

  52. with the Spirit.

  53. Let us walk by the Spirit.

  54. If the Holy Spirit has come into your heart, into your life, and made you alive to God,

  55. says the Apostle, you will begin to be transformed from the inside.

  56. True spiritual transformation cannot, does not come from the outside.

  57. It does not come from obeying laws,

  58. or any external observance, or ceremony, or liturgy, or anything.

  59. But it comes from keeping in step with the Holy Spirit.

  60. And this passage is one of the deepest, and the clearest, and most practical sections

  61. I can think of in all the Bible on how to live the Christian life.

  62. I'm sorry we haven't got long to talk about it this morning, but I want to give you two

  63. coat hangers to hang your thinking. And you can go and think through these verses.

  64. Let me commend this book to you, God's Spirit.

  65. It's a book on the fruit of the Spirit. It is written by our own Reuben Hunter.

  66. He's one of our own. And it's written on these verses.

  67. It's a brilliant little book, short little chapters,

  68. looking at the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  69. If you need to think more, and we all do, get hold of this.

  70. I think it's about 6.50 on the bookstall. But do pick that up.

  71. So, two coat hangers to hang our thinking this morning.

  72. What does this transformation look like? What it looks like, first of all?

  73. What does keeping in step with the Spirit look like? And then secondly, how does it happen?

  74. So, first of all, what does it look like? I'm going back to verse 13.

  75. You were called to freedom, brothers and sisters.

  76. But do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love, serve one another.

  77. The whole law, Paul says, is fulfilled in this one word.

  78. You should love your neighbour as yourself.

  79. It's one thing to say that Christ has set us free.

  80. It's one thing to say, I'm completely accepted and I stand loved by God.

  81. It's an entirely different thing to live out that freedom.

  82. And so, until now, Paul in Galatians has been demonstrating what it means to be free.

  83. And now he starts to talk to us about how do I use this freedom.

  84. And this is what it looks like.

  85. God has made you free so that you and I will serve other people.

  86. It's very, very simple. Incredibly simple.

  87. Faith in Jesus Christ does not just bring us into connection with God,

  88. but it brings us into a particular relationship with God's people.

  89. And so, here's the truth, which is shocking in many ways.

  90. You cannot walk with God unless you walk with God's people.

  91. You cannot. If you do not walk in love with God's people,

  92. you cannot say that you're walking in love with God.

  93. And so, the primary way that we express the gospel of freedom and forgiveness is

  94. serving other people in love.

  95. This is the mark of freedom, brothers and sisters.

  96. This is the mark of the reality that the Holy Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts,

  97. that we use our lives, that we make our decisions,

  98. very practical day-to-day decisions as to what will serve other people.

  99. Not in some grand gesture of self-sacrifice,

  100. that everyone will look on and say, well, aren't they fantastic that they're so giving to others?

  101. No, in the slow, invisible, quiet, daily death of small inconveniences.

  102. Paul says that is how you show that God is real in your life.

  103. And it's doing the opposite of what comes naturally.

  104. That's what Paul's point is in verses 16 to 17. Let's read those.

  105. Where he says, but I say, walk by the Spirit,

  106. and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  107. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,

  108. and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.

  109. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things that you want to do.

  110. In the King James Version, it says,

  111. the flesh lusteth against the flesh.

  112. The flesh lusteth against the Spirit.

  113. It's a great translation.

  114. Except, whenever I say lust,

  115. and whenever we use the word desires, we immediately think of sex.

  116. And that's not what it's about here, actually.

  117. It's speaking about the deep, inner motivation of desire and longing that we all have.

  118. And the word flesh also makes us think of sex or the body,

  119. but that isn't what it means here either.

  120. Every time Paul uses the word flesh, he's speaking about our human nature.

  121. And here's what the Bible is saying to us.

  122. That our human nature, naturally, you left to yourself and me left to myself, is hostile to God.

  123. That is intrinsically, radically, permanently, defiantly, pervasively hostile to God.

  124. That's who you are. That's who I am.

  125. The Apostle says in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  126. for the mind that is set on the flesh or on the human nature is hostile to God.

  127. It does not submit to God's law.

  128. It cannot.

  129. Our human nature is, when it's acting true to form,

  130. is self-seeking, disobedient, and defiant towards God.

  131. And here's the truth.

  132. Every part of our human nature is touched with this.

  133. And there's no part of us that is not affected by it.

  134. And you might say, well, that's really strong, Paul.

  135. Really, really strong.

  136. But remember what Jesus said.

  137. Jesus said in Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  138. for within, from out of the heart,

  139. of man and woman,

  140. come evil thoughts, fornication,

  141. theft, murder, adultery,

  142. coveting, wickedness, deceit,

  143. licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

  144. Sometimes we say things, don't we?

  145. And we think to ourselves,

  146. I don't know where that came from.

  147. Well, the Bible tells us exactly where it comes from.

  148. It comes from our nature.

  149. All of those evil things come from within ourselves.

  150. And Jesus says they make us impure.

  151. If you're anything like me,

  152. you have a terribly flattering, optimistic,

  153. sentimental, and superficial view of yourself.

  154. We all want to think of ourselves, don't we,

  155. as basically innocent.

  156. But the proof of that hostility,

  157. between our nature and God,

  158. is that when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives,

  159. when we place our faith,

  160. and our trust,

  161. and reliance on Jesus,

  162. and God takes resident by his Spirit,

  163. your life becomes a struggle.

  164. It's wonderful.

  165. I mean, Paul is writing to Christians here.

  166. And when somebody becomes a Christian,

  167. they say,

  168. before I started to follow Jesus Christ,

  169. I never struggled with temptation,

  170. I just gave into it.

  171. But now I've become a Christian.

  172. Now I'm seeking to live for the Lord Jesus,

  173. and God the Holy Spirit has taken residence in my heart.

  174. I find it's a real struggle.

  175. It's a real battle.

  176. And so when the Holy Spirit comes into our hearts,

  177. he brings with him affections for God.

  178. And so you now begin to desire the things of God.

  179. And that comes into direct conflict with our flesh,

  180. with our own sinful desires.

  181. So for the Christian here this morning,

  182. we find that there's a battle within us.

  183. Because my nature battles against the Holy Spirit.

  184. Verse 19,

  185. what does it look like?

  186. Well, the works of the flesh are plain, aren't they?

  187. Here's another list.

  188. What a list this is.

  189. Verse 19,

  190. Now the works of the flesh are evident.

  191. Sexual immorality,

  192. impurity,

  193. sensuality,

  194. idolatry,

  195. sorcery,

  196. enmity,

  197. anger,

  198. strife,

  199. jealousy,

  200. fits of anger,

  201. rivalries,

  202. dissensions,

  203. divisions,

  204. envy,

  205. drunkenness,

  206. orgies,

  207. and things like these.

  208. And I warned you, Paul says,

  209. as I warned you when I was with you,

  210. that those who practice these things,

  211. those who keep going with these things,

  212. shall not definitively inherit the kingdom of God.

  213. Now I think that that list in verses 19 and 20

  214. cover just about all of us.

  215. Can I ask for a show of hands,

  216. is there anyone this morning who is not covered by this list?

  217. I shouldn't do that.

  218. It's a great list, isn't it?

  219. Look at the sins here.

  220. Look what it talks about.

  221. Some of the sins there are,

  222. sins of religious people.

  223. Some of them are the sins of irreligious people.

  224. If you look at the first two,

  225. the first couple are to do with sexuality.

  226. Some of them are to do with substance abuse.

  227. And then there's,

  228. and the killers aren't there,

  229. there's the killers of selfishness,

  230. jealousy,

  231. anger,

  232. fits of anger.

  233. The point is this,

  234. if you are led by the spirit,

  235. you are not under the law.

  236. That is the law of God.

  237. You shall not, you shall not, you shall not.

  238. It can't do anything to transform us.

  239. It can't transform this,

  240. these inner issues.

  241. That only happens through the leading of the spirit.

  242. And so let me just pause here

  243. and look with you at verse 18.

  244. Because that phrase there,

  245. led by the spirit,

  246. should get an award for one of the most abused phrases

  247. in all of the Bible.

  248. And so people use it today, don't they?

  249. You often hear it, isn't it?

  250. I'm being led by the spirit

  251. as if it's a kind of internet connection with God.

  252. Where I download fresh information from God

  253. and he gives me guidance today.

  254. And it usually comes,

  255. when you talk to people like that,

  256. it usually comes in the thoughts,

  257. in the case of,

  258. I had this feeling,

  259. or I felt this nudge,

  260. or I had this thought.

  261. And when that happens,

  262. we say,

  263. I was led by the spirit.

  264. But actually,

  265. the phrase led by the spirit

  266. only comes up twice in the New Testament.

  267. And when we read this phrase,

  268. led by the spirit,

  269. it has got nothing to do with guidance at all,

  270. but it's got everything to do with godliness.

  271. And so being led by the spirit

  272. is not having a hotline to heaven,

  273. but it is God's spirit

  274. in our hearts

  275. resisting our fallen nature.

  276. And so to be led by the spirit

  277. means actually to be in battle.

  278. It means to go to war.

  279. Here's the point.

  280. And the works of the human nature,

  281. the works of the flesh,

  282. they're not all sexual by any means,

  283. but they are all self-centered.

  284. Because sin is self-love to the core.

  285. My nature, my flesh,

  286. whispers to me all the time,

  287. and it says,

  288. you're free.

  289. You're free.

  290. Sounds terrific.

  291. Don't put yourself out for others.

  292. Think very carefully.

  293. What is in this for yourself?

  294. I need to be indulged.

  295. And if you indulge me,

  296. my flesh says,

  297. I will be good to you.

  298. I will be good so long

  299. as it doesn't cost me very much.

  300. And we need to hear this this morning

  301. because we're so devious naturally,

  302. and we're so slippery

  303. in our sinful nature.

  304. And we know that

  305. our sinful nature is so slippery

  306. it will try and counterfeit

  307. the fruit of the spirit.

  308. So long as we remain in control.

  309. That's the issue.

  310. Who is in control?

  311. You see,

  312. if I remain in control,

  313. I may not be sexually promiscuous,

  314. but I can be filled with pride,

  315. can't I?

  316. Or I may not appear proud,

  317. but I'm going to harbor

  318. all sorts of deep envies

  319. and jealousies towards you.

  320. But if we keep in step

  321. with the spirit,

  322. we are not controlled

  323. by our sinful desires.

  324. We're not controlled

  325. by an external institution.

  326. We're not controlled

  327. by what other Christians think,

  328. but we're controlled

  329. by the spirit.

  330. And that is why religion

  331. is so, so powerless here.

  332. It cannot help you.

  333. Religion cannot help your heart.

  334. It cannot change your heart.

  335. All the law keeping,

  336. all the ceremonies,

  337. all the attendance

  338. in all the world

  339. cannot change

  340. by fundamental egocentricity.

  341. Only God's spirit can do that.

  342. And so you see,

  343. when you want to serve God

  344. on your own terms,

  345. you're not keeping in step

  346. with the spirit,

  347. but you're giving expression

  348. to your sinful nature.

  349. When you make decisions

  350. based on your own convenience,

  351. or when you expect the church

  352. or the group of Christians

  353. around you

  354. to accommodate to your wishes,

  355. you're giving expression

  356. to your sinful nature.

  357. This is what it looks like.

  358. The sign,

  359. the real sign

  360. of transformation

  361. by the spirit

  362. is serving others in love.

  363. Using the freedom

  364. that you and I have in Christ

  365. not to get what we want,

  366. but to do what we know

  367. will help others.

  368. And so I'm afraid

  369. that many people think today

  370. that belonging to church

  371. is like joining a club

  372. or becoming a member

  373. of something.

  374. Last night,

  375. I took the dramatic snap

  376. of becoming a member

  377. of the co-op.

  378. I've been going

  379. to the co-op

  380. for 18 years.

  381. It's been a kind

  382. of casual relationship.

  383. I've been more

  384. of an adherent.

  385. But last night,

  386. me and the co-op

  387. got committed.

  388. I went to the self-service

  389. checkout,

  390. and for the first time

  391. I noticed that

  392. I could become a member

  393. just by scanning

  394. on my phone.

  395. I was given the option

  396. to scan as a member.

  397. I took my phone

  398. out of my pocket nervously.

  399. I went onto the camera.

  400. I clicked on the link,

  401. and I slowly entered

  402. my details.

  403. There was no emotion.

  404. There was no crisis experience.

  405. I was sent an email

  406. which said this.

  407. Thanks for becoming

  408. a co-op member, Paul.

  409. At co-op,

  410. you're not just a member.

  411. You're an owner.

  412. We don't have shareholders.

  413. The people who use us

  414. own us,

  415. like you.

  416. I've got no clue

  417. what that means.

  418. Absolutely no clue.

  419. I don't know what difference

  420. becoming a member

  421. of the co-op

  422. is going to make

  423. to my life.

  424. It saved me 20 pence

  425. on last night's shopping.

  426. But I've got no real

  427. expectations of the co-op,

  428. and they've got no real

  429. expectations of me.

  430. When people say,

  431. you know,

  432. the kind of interview

  433. before you're preaching

  434. is that,

  435. Paul, tell us a little bit

  436. about yourself.

  437. Well, my name's Paul.

  438. I've got a wife called Claire.

  439. I've got three children.

  440. I'm Welsh

  441. and I'm a member

  442. of the co-op.

  443. No one's going to say that,

  444. are they?

  445. I'm not going to be

  446. deeply involved

  447. in the co-op.

  448. I'm not going to be

  449. engaged with the people there.

  450. I'm not going to start

  451. going in and giving

  452. pep talks to the staff.

  453. And there are many people

  454. that think that

  455. Christianity is like that.

  456. They think coming

  457. to church is like that.

  458. And Paul says,

  459. no, no,

  460. let us keep in step

  461. with the Spirit.

  462. And I've been really

  463. struck this week

  464. that Galatians 5,

  465. there's not a singular command.

  466. It's a plural command.

  467. And so to keep in step

  468. with the Spirit,

  469. here's what you really,

  470. I want you to grasp

  471. this this morning,

  472. that this is not something

  473. that you can do

  474. on your own.

  475. And it's not something

  476. I can do on my own.

  477. You are not a special case

  478. that can do it on your own.

  479. No one can do it

  480. on their own.

  481. Because we can only do this

  482. with one another.

  483. So in Greek,

  484. it is literally

  485. keep in row together

  486. with the Holy Spirit.

  487. Keep in row together

  488. with the Holy Spirit.

  489. So it's through

  490. our mutual fellowship.

  491. It's through how

  492. we are different members

  493. in the Christian community,

  494. bearing with one another,

  495. loving one another,

  496. serving one another,

  497. that we keep in step

  498. with the Spirit.

  499. And the only way

  500. that we can do this

  501. is by holding on

  502. to each other

  503. and serving one another.

  504. That's how we keep

  505. in step with the Spirit.

  506. And so that puts

  507. a nail in the coffin,

  508. doesn't it,

  509. of me and my Christianity,

  510. of kind of living

  511. an isolated Christian life.

  512. It's impossible.

  513. You cannot do it.

  514. That's the first thing.

  515. That's what it looks like.

  516. Secondly,

  517. how does it work?

  518. How does it work practically?

  519. Look at verse 22, please.

  520. These are wonderful verses.

  521. In fact,

  522. let's read verses 22 and 23 together.

  523. All right?

  524. Verse 22 after me.

  525. But the fruit of the Spirit

  526. is love,

  527. joy,

  528. peace,

  529. patience,

  530. kindness,

  531. goodness,

  532. faithfulness,

  533. gentleness,

  534. self-control.

  535. Against such things

  536. there is no law.

  537. They're wonderful things,

  538. aren't they?

  539. Paul calls them what?

  540. He calls them the fruit

  541. singular of the Holy Spirit.

  542. And these characteristics

  543. have not come about

  544. by years of earnest

  545. moral effort

  546. and hard work

  547. and self-improvement.

  548. These characteristics

  549. of love, joy,

  550. peace, patience,

  551. kindness, goodness,

  552. faithfulness,

  553. gentleness,

  554. self-control,

  555. they've not come about

  556. through religious observance

  557. or ceremonies.

  558. They've come from God

  559. and they come,

  560. don't they,

  561. in the arena of the heart

  562. and they are entirely supernatural.

  563. If you want to see

  564. what the works of the flesh

  565. look like,

  566. if you want to see

  567. what the works of the flesh

  568. look like,

  569. do what comes naturally.

  570. But Christian growth

  571. and transformation

  572. is fruit.

  573. It's fruit.

  574. It's organic.

  575. It's like what happens

  576. on a tree.

  577. Do you remember

  578. in John's Gospel

  579. when Jesus says

  580. to his disciples

  581. in the upper room,

  582. he says,

  583. I am the vine,

  584. you are the branches.

  585. He who abides in me,

  586. he it is

  587. that bears much fruit.

  588. Because apart from me,

  589. you can do nothing.

  590. And so how do we bear fruit?

  591. The way that we bear fruit

  592. is by holding on

  593. to the Lord Jesus

  594. and he lives his life

  595. through us.

  596. And these nine fruits

  597. that Paul mentions here,

  598. they all belong together.

  599. Love, joy, peace.

  600. Love is basically

  601. opening ourselves

  602. to each other

  603. and treating

  604. that other person

  605. with the love

  606. of Jesus Christ.

  607. Not because of

  608. what it will bring you,

  609. but because of

  610. the intrinsic value

  611. of that person.

  612. It's choosing

  613. to do what will be

  614. for the spiritual benefit

  615. of that person

  616. or that group.

  617. Sometimes they will like it,

  618. sometimes they will hate it.

  619. It doesn't really matter.

  620. Joy is taking

  621. an intrinsic delight

  622. in God.

  623. It's joy

  624. in knowing

  625. that God has

  626. loved me

  627. in Jesus Christ

  628. and there is nothing

  629. in all the universe

  630. that can separate me

  631. from the love of God.

  632. Peace is simply

  633. knowing

  634. that God is wise.

  635. He is the wise one.

  636. And God is in control,

  637. isn't he,

  638. of all the circumstances

  639. of my life this morning.

  640. These are all ways

  641. of serving one another.

  642. Look at patience.

  643. Patience comes

  644. from the knowledge

  645. that everything

  646. that happens to me,

  647. both good and evil,

  648. comes to me

  649. from the hand of God,

  650. of a God

  651. who loves me.

  652. and that waiting

  653. is a very important

  654. instrument

  655. in the hand of God

  656. to make me

  657. like the Lord Jesus Christ.

  658. Naturally,

  659. I don't want to wait.

  660. Naturally,

  661. I'm impatient.

  662. But God uses

  663. the circumstances

  664. of my life

  665. to make me wait,

  666. to make me like Jesus.

  667. And we have to be patient,

  668. don't we,

  669. because the fruit

  670. of the Spirit,

  671. sometimes it feels

  672. like there's nothing happening.

  673. And there is a slowness

  674. of growth in grace.

  675. And it's totally frustrating.

  676. And it's given to me

  677. by the Holy Spirit

  678. to help me depend on God.

  679. And I found this

  680. really encouraging,

  681. the thing that we live

  682. in the church

  683. in a real program age.

  684. So you do this

  685. and it will result in that.

  686. You hold this course

  687. and it will result in that.

  688. You do this,

  689. you do that,

  690. you do it.

  691. It ain't like that,

  692. is it?

  693. It's really not like that.

  694. It's organic,

  695. it's sometimes slow

  696. and imperceptible

  697. and yet,

  698. the fruit appears.

  699. Kindness and generosity,

  700. they've got nothing

  701. to do with our abilities

  702. or our gifts

  703. or our IQ

  704. and success.

  705. You can give all your money

  706. you want to charity,

  707. you can preach

  708. a thousand sermons,

  709. you can have thousands

  710. of people come to faith

  711. through you,

  712. you can invent

  713. a cure for disease

  714. and you can be

  715. completely barren

  716. of the fruit of the Spirit.

  717. But here you've got

  718. this communal reality

  719. that God sows

  720. the seed of His Word

  721. in our hearts

  722. and it takes root

  723. and it bears fruit.

  724. And if you live

  725. by the Spirit

  726. and you keep in step

  727. with the Spirit,

  728. this change,

  729. this fruitfulness

  730. is inevitable.

  731. It will happen to us.

  732. and you will become

  733. less aggressive,

  734. less touchy,

  735. less self-protective,

  736. less self-focused.

  737. And you will find

  738. as God's Word

  739. and as you live

  740. amongst His people,

  741. you become more joyful,

  742. more self-controlled,

  743. more willing to be engaged

  744. with others

  745. and serve others.

  746. It will happen.

  747. I think it's a real argument

  748. for sticking in a church

  749. for the long haul.

  750. It's one of the frustrations

  751. in London church life

  752. that people come

  753. and they're here

  754. for a short time

  755. and you begin to see change

  756. and then they go off

  757. and it's a blessing

  758. to other churches.

  759. But it is a remarkable thing

  760. that I can look around this room

  761. in the last 23 years

  762. and tell you

  763. of the character change

  764. of God's people.

  765. Maybe a good thing

  766. for you,

  767. if you've been a Christian

  768. for a long time,

  769. to ask,

  770. am I actually less abrasive

  771. than I used to be?

  772. Am I less consumed

  773. with anger?

  774. Am I more forgiving?

  775. Do I hold resentments

  776. for as long as I used to?

  777. Am I increasing in peace?

  778. The other thing is

  779. you can't pick and choose

  780. this fruit.

  781. The fruit in the Greek

  782. is singular.

  783. It's one thing

  784. with nine facets.

  785. Which means

  786. you can't say today,

  787. well I'm alright and ate,

  788. but I'll let myself

  789. lag behind on the one.

  790. If you fall behind

  791. in one,

  792. you fall behind

  793. in them all.

  794. And that is why

  795. the apostle finishes,

  796. and I want us to finish you

  797. as we come to the table

  798. with these words

  799. in verses 24 and 25.

  800. Those who belong

  801. to Christ,

  802. Jesus,

  803. have crucified

  804. the flesh

  805. with its passions

  806. and desires.

  807. If we live by the Spirit,

  808. let us keep in step

  809. with the Spirit.

  810. And so if I'm to be truthful

  811. with you this morning,

  812. I look at my heart

  813. and I see an abundance

  814. of the works of the flesh

  815. and the fruit of the Spirit.

  816. It's there,

  817. but it's very,

  818. very tiny buds.

  819. And so what the apostle does

  820. at the end of this section

  821. is he takes us back

  822. to the cross

  823. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  824. And he says,

  825. God accepts you

  826. not because of any

  827. legal standard,

  828. but through the death

  829. of Jesus Christ.

  830. And that means this,

  831. that everything I do

  832. is covered

  833. by the righteousness

  834. of Jesus.

  835. But God takes

  836. delight

  837. in any movement

  838. in this direction

  839. to serve other people.

  840. And so it does not matter

  841. this morning

  842. how stumbling,

  843. how inadequate,

  844. how hopeless

  845. it really is.

  846. Every time

  847. you try and

  848. take a step

  849. to keep in step

  850. with the Spirit,

  851. it delights God

  852. because His death

  853. covers me.

  854. The best solution

  855. I can think of

  856. is when you go

  857. to a school concert.

  858. And those of you

  859. who are parents,

  860. you might remember

  861. if your kids

  862. learned instruments,

  863. you might remember

  864. their first musical performances.

  865. they're in an orchestra,

  866. we went to them,

  867. and in many ways

  868. it's utterly unbearable.

  869. Those early days

  870. of the violin,

  871. an orchestra makes

  872. funny squeaks

  873. and squawks,

  874. and very often

  875. you haven't got a clue

  876. what they're playing.

  877. But every parent there

  878. loves every second of it.

  879. It's like when your child

  880. brings to you

  881. a painting

  882. that they've done

  883. or a drawing

  884. and on one level

  885. it's horrific.

  886. It's awful,

  887. isn't it?

  888. And yet you're so proud

  889. of it,

  890. you put it on your fridge.

  891. And that is how

  892. God looks at you

  893. this morning

  894. if you are a believer.

  895. He looks at every step

  896. you've taken

  897. at seeking to

  898. save someone else.

  899. Every step

  900. that you've taken

  901. to strengthen

  902. and to build this church

  903. and no matter how weak

  904. and no matter how mixed

  905. it is,

  906. and he's delighted

  907. by it.

  908. And so as we come

  909. to the Lord's table

  910. this morning

  911. we remember

  912. that the Lord Jesus

  913. he knelt in the garden

  914. to pray

  915. for you.

  916. And he goes

  917. to the cross

  918. of Jesus Christ

  919. for you.

  920. And in the upper room

  921. he gathers his disciples

  922. and he says this,

  923. this is

  924. my commandment

  925. to you

  926. love one another

  927. as I have loved you.

  928. And that's what

  929. he's given us to do.

  930. And that is the work

  931. of the Holy Spirit

  932. in us.

  933. And so if we

  934. live by the Spirit

  935. let us keep in step

  936. with the Spirit.

  937. And can you notice

  938. just again

  939. right at the end

  940. of the chapter

  941. look at the pronouns

  942. verses 25 and 6.

  943. It's corporate.

  944. If we

  945. let us

  946. one another

  947. one another

  948. how do we

  949. keep in step

  950. with the Spirit

  951. when we need

  952. one another?

  953. It's a beautiful thing

  954. isn't it

  955. as we come

  956. to the Lord's table

  957. and that the

  958. Son of God

  959. loved me

  960. and he gave

  961. himself

  962. for me

  963. and yet

  964. I cannot

  965. understand that

  966. without looking

  967. around this room.

  968. And I cannot

  969. live that out

  970. without looking

  971. around this room

  972. and seeing the people

  973. God has called me

  974. to love

  975. and God has

  976. called me to serve.

  977. Thank you.
