  1. Let's pray. Dear Father God, we don't want to be

  2. ordinary Christians. We want to be extraordinary Christians. Really, we're

  3. not here to come to church and whining about what

  4. went wrong in our life, but to rejoice in the

  5. fact that you're the jewel in the journey, the gold

  6. of the Son of righteousness, the honey of the Word

  7. of God. Jesus, we love you. Thank you for allowing

  8. us to be here. Father, we have seen events yesterday

  9. that have changed the world. We are sleeping adventists. So

  10. many of us know nothing of prophecy, some who have

  11. been irritated by its preaching and teaching. And yet we

  12. are living at a time where we must engage the world.

  13. And Lord, our radio broadcast goes to places we don't

  14. even know. I've been informed today there was a listener

  15. a radio station picked up our broadcasts without permission. Of course,

  16. that's so with us, and that dear heart reached out.

  17. May you bless every place like this, Take our little

  18. here and make it much for your cause. Make us

  19. like the magnificent seven in Jesus' name. Amen, What kind

  20. of person does God called elitis Church? We should ask

  21. that question very shortly. The world church will be selecting

  22. leaders to replace our world leadership, and so we should

  23. ask the question what kind of persons God called elitist church?

  24. We know that Jesus called imperfect people with potential to

  25. become his disciples. Did you hear the word imperfect potential?

  26. We call that God's grace. If you could go back

  27. and you could know where I came from as a

  28. young person, I don't talk a lot about it because

  29. life before fifteen for me was trauma. I experienced a

  30. kind of life that many of you can never think of.

  31. You would not imagine that your pastor came from where

  32. he came from. But God, in his mercy, took me

  33. from that put me into a loving Christians association in

  34. Fletch your academy. And I was very imperfect. I'm still

  35. very imperfect, but I began to preach and teach. The

  36. very first year I came to academy was baptized. Because

  37. God works with imperfect people. Did you hear me? So?

  38. As a disciple of Jesus, a person is mentored under Jesus.

  39. They learned the ways of Jesus from Jesus. Back then,

  40. they learned the ethics of Jesus. From Jesus, they learned

  41. to value God and others as Jesus values every person

  42. with potential. A disciple in time can, in theory, become

  43. a leader, even though he or she must always remain

  44. a disciple. So just because you become a leader doesn't

  45. mean you stop being disciple. We never stopped following Jesus

  46. just to become a leader. In fact, leaders need to

  47. dig in and follow Jesus all the more because they

  48. are a leader. In fact, leaders will not lead long

  49. if they don't follow Jesus as a disciple. The early

  50. Church was growing in the Book of Acts. They had

  51. overcome their first hurdle of apostasy in the case of

  52. Antonius and Saphira. They had faced opposition and persecution with

  53. courage and prayer. They were not concerned about numbers. But

  54. God brought providence to grow the church through basics, through fellowship,

  55. Bible study, friendship, commitment, sharing Christ and so the church

  56. grew in boldness in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  57. Everything looked mighty good until dissension arose in the early Church.

  58. How did rise concerning the widows of the Church. Now

  59. you shouldn't be arguing over widows. So they were complaining

  60. about widows in the early Church. I've heard all kinds

  61. of complaints at times in the church arise about this,

  62. that and the other thing. But they were concerned about

  63. the widows. And it had a lot to do with

  64. whose widows were being taken care of or weren't in

  65. their eyes and perception. You see, the early Church supported

  66. widows that were deserving of their support. Godly widows who

  67. met a certain criteria were fed and were not allowed

  68. to starve to death in the early Church. Historians tell

  69. us that by the end of the first century, the

  70. Early Church had created a support structure for the elderly

  71. and the sick that became the envy of the Roman world.

  72. They left no one behind in the Apostolic Church. When

  73. our treasurer Tom Kunju had a stroke. You know, sometimes

  74. people say, well, how can who so and so serve

  75. in the church with a stroke? Many of you don't know.

  76. But our transition from Alleghany's Conference the Chesapeake Conference was

  77. led by Tom Kunju after he survived with a life stroke.

  78. He guided us with wisdom and the audit to make

  79. it happen. Now we have a new treasure at RhI.

  80. But Tom is on our finance team and new treasures

  81. Doris Horner. Where's Doris at? Doris? Now, Doris isn't taking

  82. Tom's place. Doris is standing on the shoulders of Tom.

  83. She is humble, committed working with our conference auditor who

  84. is doing our books until certain transitions and fixes occur,

  85. which is wonderful and God be praised. But you know,

  86. we made a decision we would not leave Tom behind,

  87. and God allowed him to get through that life's threatening

  88. situation to emerge and bless the church in a quiet way.

  89. Everything looked mighty good until dissension arose over the widows history.

  90. Just like Jesus, the early Church left no one behind.

  91. And that's important to take note of here. Those early

  92. believers did not forget the week and the elderly, and

  93. should we Sometimes good things can be used by the

  94. enemy for bad outcomes if our focus is misdirected on

  95. the good thing. And that's what happened. Look at verse one,

  96. Act six, that's enter our bibles. Last week. You had

  97. to actually open your bible, open them anyway their slides.

  98. It won't hurt you to turn to Act six. Now,

  99. in those days when the number of the disciples was multiplying.

  100. There arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists

  101. Hebrew Christians Greek Christians. Hellenists are Greek Christians because their

  102. widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve

  103. summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, it is

  104. not desirable that we should leave the word of God

  105. and serve tables. Now, the Greek word for desirable is

  106. the Greek word for pleasant or pleasing. Have you ever

  107. seen an unpleasant person going unpleasant I'm happy, and their

  108. faces down their stern at you, as my wife is

  109. sometimes honey, you know, you gotta watch those eyebrows. Keep

  110. them down, so I don't know they're up. They're up. Okay,

  111. we can look unpleasant when we're trying to be pleasant.

  112. Sometimes now they're saying, here, it's not pleasant that this

  113. is happening in the church. God is not pleased when

  114. ministers of the gospel are distracted and preoccupied doing the

  115. work of maintaining the church and even caring for its

  116. needs at the expense of not being in the word

  117. and praying. Problem here, it takes time to study the

  118. Word of God. The spiritual leaders of the church to

  119. be foremost in sharing, studying, and praying. It's hard for

  120. a minister. I speak from experience. It's hard for a

  121. minister to minister from the Bible if they are distracted

  122. from Bibles, study, prayer, and teaching, preaching and visiting people

  123. that the members should be doing. There are roles for

  124. the pastor, but he's not to do everything. Imagine God

  125. frowning on such a thing. Because he does, he's not pleased.

  126. The same challenge was hoisted on Moses and outside. Remember Moses,

  127. children of Israel, of Sinai, I'm out of Egypt to Sinai,

  128. Jethro as good godly father in laws. As Moses, You're

  129. going to burn out here. You can't handle all the

  130. pressures of the people. You're gonna need to choose spirit

  131. filled men. Let them lead in circles of concern, have

  132. hierarchical levels of leaders, so that the important matters only

  133. come to you and not everything else on the table.

  134. And when Moses took that council, and Moses lived to

  135. write the Torah, he lived to bring him through the

  136. wilderness for forty years. He lived to see his life

  137. purpose realize we wouldn't have a Bible if he had

  138. not taken that council from Jethro. The same challenge Moses

  139. overcame way back then arose in the early Church among

  140. the Apostles. God was rebooting Israel through the Apostolic Church,

  141. the Helenus. The Greek widows were Jewish widows who spoke

  142. Greek and who were affected by the Greek culture since

  143. the babylon In captivity. That did dasper was the spreading

  144. of the Jewish people throughout the Greek world, and so

  145. Jewish were everywhere. They've learned Greek language, Greek culture. The Bible,

  146. the New Testament's not written in Hebrew or Aramic, It's

  147. written in Cooin, a common person Greek. Thus the church

  148. had cultural diversity. Is that a good thing? Let's say, amen,

  149. come on, let's what's the name of our church here?

  150. Going to help me reaching hearts? International? That means multi

  151. ethnic from every nation, kindred tribe in tongue. We celebrate diversity,

  152. and that means cultural diversity, racial diversity, age diversity. The

  153. Church had cultural diversity back then. That kind of verse,

  154. and the Greek Christians felt that their widows were being

  155. ignored for the sake of the Jewish Christian widows of Jerusalem.

  156. That's pretty bad. It's apostle that's called we call it racism.

  157. That's what they felt was happening. There probably was a

  158. little bit Peter struggled with racism. God had to straight

  159. out straighten it out with Cornelius. I'm gonna tell you

  160. right now, I love being able in the Lord to

  161. be an old, sixty two year old pastor giving a

  162. godly affectionate hand thing, you know, and this fist bump,

  163. you know, to the diversity of children in the church.

  164. The apostles said, it's not pleasant for that we should

  165. leave the word of God to serve tables. Are they right?

  166. Are they right? Okay? I would like to affirm the

  167. same truth here today with you, from the word of God.

  168. It's not pleasant your pastor should leave the word of

  169. God to set tables, to clean the church, to weave

  170. the flower bed, to do a host of things that

  171. would divert his attention from Bible studies, sharing the Word

  172. of God and evangelism. Does that make sense, okay? When

  173. I cannot train and teach because I'm doing everything else

  174. under the sun. There's a problem we've had COVID. COVID

  175. has really redone the church in any ways. People have

  176. lost the sense that they need to be engaged. People

  177. come to church late because of COVID. Some people choose

  178. to just stay at home and go online rather than

  179. get to church. Well, I got news for you. The

  180. COVID virus at this present state is not going to

  181. kill you. You need to get to church, and if

  182. it does, you'll die in church serving the Lord, and

  183. then you'll know you'll be in the right resurrection at

  184. the end of the age. Am I right? So get

  185. back to church. So the early Apostolic Church was in

  186. a crisis, racial tensions, rolls were messed up, Satan had

  187. moved on some to murmur and the complain instead of

  188. rolling up their sleeves to make a difference for the church.

  189. So the word of God gets spread and prosper. So

  190. the Apostolic giftedness could work in behalf of the church

  191. and Act sent six the Apostles called a town hall

  192. meeting where the folk us was placed squarely on sharing

  193. ministry rather than hoarding ministry. I've seen some pastors just

  194. want they want to do everything. I don't look look

  195. at the manual here leading out Today, God be praised

  196. Samuel's at his older brother. He took the place of

  197. his older brother. Did he do a good job? Amen? Okay, Texas.

  198. They called a multitude of disciples together. We call that

  199. broad consensus. There was a time in reaching Hearts where

  200. we didn't use board meetings. We had full business meetings

  201. of everybody to make decisions. Now I realized the church

  202. manual structures different, but I liked it better that way

  203. because then we had consensus and buy in. So we've

  204. got to figure out how to work with the structure

  205. to keep the Apostolic way going. Okay. Now they had preached,

  206. and they administered, and a multitude of new disciples stood

  207. before them to hear. The apostles appealed to the brethren

  208. to empower the apostles so they can teach and preach

  209. the word of God. Look at verse three x six. Therefore,

  210. and what does it say in your Bible the very

  211. next word, Brethren, seek out from among you, don't come

  212. to us. You look inside your own circle, from among

  213. you seven men of good reputation. The word good is

  214. not in the Greek there of reputation, full of the

  215. Holy Spirit and wisdom whom we may appoint over this business,

  216. but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to

  217. the ministry of the Word. Were the Apostles right in

  218. standing the ground for those things? Yes? Or no? Okay,

  219. Now think about these verses a little bit with me here.

  220. First of all, the apostles address the disciples who had

  221. become a multitude as brethren. Are they talking down to

  222. them or are they engaging them as equals in the

  223. family of God? See? So they're not larding over anybody here.

  224. That's the correct leadership style. But are the apostles Do

  225. they not have apostolic authority? Yes, but they're not using

  226. the authority to hit someone over the head. Secondly, they

  227. collaboratively called the brethren to look within their own ranks

  228. and to consider the lives of their fellow brethren to

  229. see who could make the best leaders among them. Is

  230. that a good thing? Now? Some people just want to

  231. be leaders. I feel that I have been called to

  232. preach six sermons at Reaching Hearts this week. Some people

  233. say that maybe he has called you to preach a

  234. sermon or two, But it could be he's called you

  235. to preach six sermons at the prison. Brothers Zundel, You

  236. preach how many times a month? How many what? How

  237. many times a week a month? Do you preach when

  238. you're in the prisons? Every other week? Every other month? Boy,

  239. you're preaching all the time. If I don't get my

  240. voice back, I'll have you come up and finish. Excuse me,

  241. I choked as I was talking to you, all right now.

  242. The bottom line is that you're preaching and your teaching

  243. and you're not even in the church. Mark you do

  244. the same, don't you. You share the word of God

  245. in prisons, Doris, you do, And so it's good when

  246. you're not. Is it good when they're not in church?

  247. Having church in the prisons for people who need the

  248. word of God? Yeah? Absolutely? Okay. Now, the Apostles gave

  249. three important criteria for choosing the seven leaders from the

  250. Brethren greatly needed to stabilize the church. Let's look at

  251. those characteristic number one of the Magnificent seven. They were chosen.

  252. They were to choose men of good reputation. You see

  253. that in your Bible. Some translations say it differently. The

  254. Greek is a little more clear than this. It uses

  255. the verb for martyr, meaning to testify, to bear witness

  256. to something. It's one thing to choose a leader, it's

  257. another thing to be willing to testify that you choose

  258. a good leader whose life bears witness to the consistent

  259. see of their faith and calling. Isn't that right? You

  260. can say, I know that person is a man or

  261. a woman of God. Isn't that someone you want to

  262. be a leader? Rad I'm not really sure. I have

  263. to really study it. They really don't give much evidence,

  264. but maybe they'll work. That's not the kind of thing here.

  265. It's another thing thing to be willing to testify to

  266. person's credentials. A good person's life bears witness to the

  267. truth they taught that we would testify to. It is

  268. the duty of the church to choose men and women

  269. to lead the church who are people of integrity. Does

  270. that make sense? Integrity and who will not abuse their

  271. position as leaders? Characteristic number two of the Magnificent Seven.

  272. The Apostles ask the brethren to choose men full of

  273. the Holy Spirit. Who wants to have somebody in leadership

  274. in the church who's not a Holy spirit filled leader?

  275. Forget it? How can you tell if someone is full

  276. of the Holy Now, this is where I start meddling. Okay,

  277. hold your pulse, hang on here. A holy spirit filled

  278. person has self control in their lives, yes or no? Okay,

  279. Paul says, a holy spirit filled person doesn't go after spirits.

  280. He says that and that means alcohol that can make

  281. you drunk, and after the Holy Spirit. But after the

  282. Holy Spirit he gives you love, joy and peace. So

  283. is it okay? If for the for the leadership the

  284. church and people who aren't drinkers of alcohol, yes or no. Yeah.

  285. A person who strives to be a leader in the church,

  286. but who puts alcohol in their house, and who goes

  287. to bars and enjoys worthy pursuits in bars or at

  288. the theater and thinks that that's Christian liberty has no

  289. business being the leader in the church, no matter who

  290. they are. And you know, in Psalm's one, it says

  291. that as people we should not sit in the in

  292. the seat of scoffers. That when people know the church

  293. and they try to abuse it, and we have fellowship

  294. and association with them as they do this, do you

  295. realize we share in their sins. God has placed us

  296. here to build up the church, to build up the

  297. people of God, to find the weak in the broken

  298. and to help mend these things. And so these people

  299. that we love dearly, and they're in every church, in

  300. every place in North America I've seen in every church

  301. I've been this has been the case. You see this,

  302. These dear folks need to repent and be baptized or

  303. rebaptized or even disciplined in love as God commands it

  304. for the good of the church in themselves. Holy spirit

  305. feeled people may feel upset at times. Have you ever

  306. been upset? Do you ever feel upset? Okay? I have

  307. because we're all human? How many of you are human?

  308. Need a DNA check to make sure you're a human? Okay?

  309. But holy spirit people don't blow up in anger and

  310. keep on blowing up up and refuse to calm down

  311. when God wants peace and calmness in the church. Losing

  312. temper with grudges, trying to exert one's will as if

  313. they're the righteous judge disqualify someone as a spiritual leader

  314. in the church. Holy spirit filled people don't manipulate to

  315. get their way. Now you had many of you've ever

  316. manipulated to get your way. I'll put my hand up.

  317. It's human nature. Isn't it. Well, I'm gonna get this

  318. because I'm gonna just make it look like this. I'll

  319. triangulate a little bit, I'll get that person talking to

  320. that person. I'll lobby here, and then it'll happen. Hurrah.

  321. I'm a politician. No. Holy Spirit people don't do that.

  322. They're transparent, you know, I say transparent as they can be.

  323. Sometimes it's not God's will for you to share what

  324. you know, but in that setting, through truth, they try

  325. to move God's work forward. Holy Spirit people are correctable people,

  326. and they're in the wrong. Is that right? Okay? But

  327. they stand their ground when they're in the right. That's

  328. the other side of it. Holy Spirit. Fled people don't

  329. gossip to hurt others to get ahead. Right, but you're awful,

  330. Calm now, I see. I told you I was getting

  331. into things here. They don't try to get into other

  332. people's heads to become their judges. Right. The sin of

  333. gossip is placed by Paul and Romans one right alongside

  334. the sin of homosexuality, murder, and other awful practices that

  335. bring the wrath of God. Holy spirit filled people seek

  336. to be in prayer and they're kind people. Have you

  337. ever noticed that when you're praying with someone, you can't

  338. be angry with them. Have you noticed that, Yeah, if

  339. you're praying for someone, it's hard to be angry with them.

  340. They want to live for God, live for others, serve,

  341. make their lives pouring out for the lives of others.

  342. Holy Spirit people are not rebels, but and peacemakers who

  343. never sacrifice principle to make peace though. Holy Spirit field

  344. people can see I sat down and I was just

  345. writing and what came to my mind from the scriptures,

  346. and I had a laundry list here, isn't it awful?

  347. Say no, it's okay, right. Holy Spirit people can defer

  348. their own interests and needs for the good of others

  349. in need. In other words, you want to get something

  350. special for yourself, but you see a brother who can't

  351. feed hisself, maybe they're in crises, and you put the

  352. money for the brother rather than your what. I once

  353. knew a pastor who tried to convince me that the

  354. immoral material of Hollywood put out there with its current

  355. bash of action hero movies and superhero movies, full of

  356. spiritualism and even nudity at times and foul language, is

  357. okay for our young people to watch if we debrief

  358. the meaning of the movie, I'm sorry. And our church manual,

  359. this kind of context not allowed for any Holy spirit

  360. field leader in the church. The New Testament says the

  361. same thing. You don't need the Church Manual. In fact,

  362. I have a suggestion for the Church Manual that they

  363. put the Ten Commandments and the sermon them mount at

  364. the beginning of the Church Manual, you know, and then

  365. we have everything else that follows. Holy spirit filled leaders

  366. return a faithful tithe, and they are grateful to God

  367. for the opportunity to quietly give offerings without talking about

  368. how good a giver they are, for as cause as

  369. they are able. Now, this has been a tough one

  370. that I had to learn the hard way when I

  371. was younger, because you always want to make your ends meet.

  372. How many of you want to go broke keep your

  373. hands down, okay, But I have found that this is

  374. what I do. I'm just going to tell you. I

  375. take the tithe envelope out when I'm doing my bills,

  376. and I don't look at the bills first. I look

  377. at God first, and the tithe is the ten percent

  378. of the increase. Some of you with businesses. It's not

  379. everything that comes through your business. It's the increase that

  380. you have, and that's sometimes thumthing you have to understand

  381. how to calculate. Some people say, well, what about the

  382. gross and the net on your check? Well, I'm going

  383. to be very frank with you. If the government takes

  384. it from you, it's not your increase. Now. I pay

  385. a tithe on my gross, but I'm not here to

  386. put a burden on somebody beyond what the word of

  387. God teaches, and so I hope the treasure doesn't go

  388. after me. But sorry, you got to go buy the

  389. Bible here, okay, help our people out. The bottom line

  390. is when you fill out your tithe and you do

  391. it first, God blesses you. That's what I found. I

  392. have a car with two hundred and eighty six thousand

  393. miles on. If you've seen my car, it used to

  394. squeak a lot. I've got some of that fixed. I'm

  395. planning to drive that car for another one hundred and

  396. fifty thousand miles. Is that okay? I'll call it my

  397. tithe car? All right? God says, you'll pour it out

  398. a blessing on us. Why not get the blessing. I'm

  399. having fun in church today. You got to help me,

  400. Holy Spirit feel people don't insist on controlling finances in

  401. the church when they are not faithful in giving to

  402. the church. Is that true? I was out of church,

  403. not this one far away where I noticed when I

  404. had the Church of business session, certain individuals always talk

  405. about how we must do the finances this way and

  406. that way. And I later learned you didn't give a

  407. nickel the church. See can't. That's not good? Holy Spirit feelled.

  408. Believers aren't more concerned about their ira as they're about

  409. the church's financial stability and the church's future. And well,

  410. what happened for the good of mission of the church

  411. in the spring of the Gospel? Is that true? How

  412. many of you want to retire or go to heaven?

  413. You're pausing too much here? Well, you know, I was thinking,

  414. if I don't get sick, even though I get old,

  415. why retire? If God gives me good health, energy, vigor,

  416. keep at it now. There's nothing wrong with being in retirement,

  417. But you start working for God in retirement. The people

  418. me to Christ had a second wind where they started

  419. a business of soul winning. They lived into their nineties,

  420. they never retired in their minds. Most of all, holy

  421. spirit filled leader will lead by personal example with integrity.

  422. Is that right? They'll be consistent. That doesn't mean they're perfect.

  423. That means they're trying to order their life right. And

  424. you can see it. As a follower of Jesus Christ,

  425. he or she will strive to live like Christ would

  426. live if Jesus walked in their shoes. So a leader

  427. is still a disciple. Let's face it, there's a high

  428. holy spirit bar for being a leader in the Church

  429. of Jesus Christ. Am I right? So we don't lower

  430. the bar we pull. We mentor people into leadership. I

  431. recently heard someone tell me, Pastor Mike, it's our turn

  432. to be leaders. I said, well, leaders are mentored. It's

  433. okay to be a leader if God's called you to leadership.

  434. But what if He's called you to service? What if

  435. he's called you to follow godly leaders? No, I don't

  436. want to do that. I want to be a leader.

  437. Huh huh, I say, the path to being exalted is

  438. being humbled. Just because a person wants to lead does

  439. not mean they need to be a leader. I didn't

  440. ask to be a pastor leader. It came to me

  441. after growth and I need my wife, I need others.

  442. Many of you know doctor John Butler was mentored me

  443. in leadership after Sligo. I needed his wisdom and counsel.

  444. I need Mervin's wisdom and counsel. At this present time,

  445. I don't have all the answers. Our head elder here,

  446. Elder John is a person of principle. He's a person

  447. who is sacrificially given for this church hours on end

  448. to make it happen. Never blows his horn, So I'm

  449. gonna blow for the Lord's sake and say God be

  450. praised for our head Elder here. So when people, if

  451. people should hit his size, our head elder, it hurts

  452. me personally, it hurts our church. A holy spirit filled

  453. leader is a faithful leaver, even if he or she

  454. is a servant in the church. Now, what's wrong with

  455. being a servant who came to serve Jesus did all? Right?

  456. In the early Aventist church, you could not be a

  457. leader in the church. Don't hear this. This may surprise you.

  458. You could not be a leader in the church and

  459. advocate causes that broke the law of God. There was

  460. a book written called a Solemn Appeal in the Early

  461. Avenist Church e when White wrote a right alongside of it.

  462. In that book, the early Aventist Church took its side

  463. against the practice of abortion. Did you know that? It

  464. was the consistent teaching of this church until and it

  465. still is until some started messing with our hospitals in

  466. the seventies, and our roots are strongly committed to protecting

  467. life of the ones recently said to me, Mike, what

  468. about the baby that's born, by the way, if any

  469. baby that's born into this church where a mother should

  470. choose to have their baby instead of aborted, can I

  471. ask you by a vote today, would we help that mother?

  472. Would we help that mother so that she's not abandoned,

  473. she's not discouraged, she doesn't feel like her life's on hold,

  474. but the love of the Church is wrapped around her

  475. and the child. That's what we need to be and

  476. should be as a church. There are many evangelical churches

  477. out there, a number of element evangelical churches who commit

  478. themselves to not just saving babies, but saving mothers with babies.

  479. It's a godly work. The early Church did the same thing.

  480. The Apostolic church was in the business of saving babies.

  481. Exposed babies throughout the Roman world were gathered and raised

  482. in the church. So the early Aventist church took that position.

  483. That may come as news to some of you. So

  484. be careful about which causes you advocating holarized political world

  485. we live in. We should not advocate any political cause

  486. right or left in the church that takes our spiritual

  487. eyesight off of our prophetic calling as a prophetic people.

  488. Is that fair enough? So some people come to me

  489. and say, well, I'm a maga Christian. I says well,

  490. if Jesus Christ is your leader, fine, but don't bring

  491. politics in the church. Others will say well, I'm a

  492. social justice Christian. I says, well, I believe in social justice.

  493. But if you're talking about a political philosophy, don't drag

  494. it into the church. Let's be about saving men and

  495. women for the Gospel, helping people, not virtue signaling on

  496. the either side of the extremes, and be the people

  497. of the Bible. You see, that's what the early Avidist

  498. church it was like. You might find yourself fighting against

  499. God and your zeal for something that God's working out

  500. bless characteristic Number three of the Magnificent Seven is that

  501. they were wise men. Do we need wise life leader

  502. in the church? Okay, now the Book of Accadents, God's

  503. chose men of wisdom who were practical people who were

  504. capable of performing good deeds. I got a series of

  505. verses here. Let's quickly move through them. Exus twenty eight three.

  506. So you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans,

  507. whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom. You

  508. see craft's abilities trades, that they may make errands, garments

  509. to consecrate him, that he may minister to me as

  510. a priest. So skilled craftsmen helped the church and the

  511. priest Exus thirty one to three. And I have filled

  512. him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and understanding

  513. and knowledge and all manner of workmanship. So it's not

  514. just the Bible, it's the HVAC system. It's how to

  515. fix things in the church. It's how to have trades

  516. like the garden we see in the back, that holy

  517. spirit filled gifts for the church. God doesn't want sloppy

  518. work in the church, right does he? He wants holy

  519. spirit filled skilled workers in the church. The young people

  520. of the church need to mentor under hard working conscientious

  521. workers in the church. Now, one thing I appreciate about

  522. Elder Mike Jones here, So Mike Jones mentors young people

  523. with the knowledge of HVAC, of tools of building, of

  524. how to use your hands and develop manhood. I appreciate

  525. that the youth can learn trades in the church by

  526. working in the church with those who are skillful in

  527. so many areas of life. Proverbs ten twenty three. To

  528. do evils is like a sport to a fool. But

  529. a man of understanding has what what's the word wisdom?

  530. A wise person is a teachable person. Proverbs one seven.

  531. The fear of the Lord, that means to love the Lord.

  532. In Deuteronomy ten twelve, the fear of the Lord is

  533. the beginning of knowledge. So when you start a relationship

  534. with God, that's when you really start getting smart. But

  535. fools despise wisdom instruction in the context fools despise a

  536. relationship with God. I don't need God. I'm smart. No,

  537. you know, aren't without the Lord? Got anything? With God,

  538. you can be anything he wants you to be. A

  539. wise person makes the relationship with God primarily as the primary.

  540. It makes the relationship with God's primary as the context

  541. for a life of service. God comes first, and then

  542. I can work for God. Proverbs nine to ten. The

  543. fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and

  544. the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Now let

  545. me add one more Proverbs twenty verse one, which I wrote,

  546. I had polutionis stick it on the slide. It's not

  547. in my manuscript. And once he gets it up there

  548. and I can't see it here, so I have to

  549. look there. Wine is a mocker. Strong drink is a brawler,

  550. and whoever's led astray by it is what not wise.

  551. So a Bible definition of a fool was someone who drinks.

  552. We learn of God through God's law, the life of

  553. Jesus Christ, and through the lives of others who model

  554. Christ correctly. Friend to know God rightly is to have life.

  555. The wise in God's eyes are those who are humble

  556. and not the sinner of the year universe in their

  557. own eyes. In the Church, they're not focused on self.

  558. There are two essential virtues upon which all virtues are based,

  559. and you can write this down is deduced from the

  560. study of the Bible. The first virtue is humility, and

  561. the second is courage. Now think about the relationship with

  562. those two virtues. Both of these work together. Humility without

  563. courage is not humility. Encourage without humility is unguided zeal

  564. Proverbs fifteen thirty three. The fear of the Lord is

  565. the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility. In summary,

  566. the Apostles sought out these three essential characteristics for leadership

  567. in choosing the magnificent seven. Now I would like to

  568. do here. I need your help. I want to quickly

  569. go through those names and show you the meaning of

  570. every one of those persons names. But before we do it,

  571. let's review in concept the two core roles of the Apostles.

  572. Number one, they sought men of good reputation. Actually, no,

  573. excuse me, I got my head. Let me back up, okay.

  574. In summary, the Apostles sought out three essential characteristics for

  575. leadership in choosing the magnificent seven. Let's look at the

  576. three characteristics for these magnificent seven men they chose. Number one,

  577. they sought men of good reputation whose lives were consistent

  578. with their faith and calling. Is that a good thing?

  579. Take a vote here. Number two, they sought holy spirit

  580. filled men characterized by self control and the fruits of

  581. the Holy Spirit in their lives. Is that a good

  582. thing for leadership of the church. Number three? They sought

  583. out men of wisdom who had a relationship of God

  584. and who were humble and courageous men eager to do

  585. the right thing in life, no matter what the fallout

  586. might be. Is that a good thing? Now? If we're

  587. lacking any of these things? Can God help us? Yeah?

  588. If you say, well, I messed up on number two

  589. or three, God will grow you to be humble and

  590. let the Word work for you. The Magnificent Seven were

  591. men of different temperaments and life experiences, but they had

  592. these three essential qualities in common. Do you want to

  593. be a leader in the church, then pray for these

  594. three essential qualities in your life. We should take note

  595. of two primary roles of the Apostles. Look at verse four.

  596. The apostles said, but we will give ourselves continually to prayer.

  597. Give means unselfish, give ourselves continued to prayer and to

  598. the ministry of the Word. A pastor is not lazy

  599. who commits himself to these two primary roles in the church.

  600. Is it a lazy thing for the pastor to study

  601. his Bible two hours a day? Is it? No? How

  602. else can he know his Bible? Well? Is it lazy

  603. for the pastor to be preaching and teaching rather than

  604. doing other things? No? Uh, I can tell you that

  605. when I preach a sermon, I'm whipped. I go home.

  606. Do you know what Diana does? My wife's an extrovert. Okay,

  607. she says, Mike, let's go pick what were those berries

  608. that she had me picked last week? Come on, honey,

  609. I'm just drawn a blank mulberries and we go. There's

  610. mulberry bushes near it. She'd always drag me to to

  611. come a park to get the mulberries, but they aren't

  612. as good as the ones next to our house. And

  613. we've just discovered that we have some mulberry trees right

  614. there near our home that are sweet and wonderful. Next year,

  615. I've got a theory on how to pick mulberry's who

  616. it is. Get this big plastic sheet, you put it

  617. all on the ground, You climb up in the tree

  618. and you shape that baby, and then when they all

  619. fall down, you scoop them up. And she says, I

  620. don't want to do it that way. I want to

  621. get them in my mouth and over my face. So

  622. it's not about the mulberries, it's about the interaction. We

  623. look awful. In fact, we look like vampires walking away

  624. from mulberry bush, you know, look like blood running down

  625. our face. Okay, but I'm tired after I preach and

  626. she but something about being with Diana gets me going

  627. when I can. You know, I'm sorry. I'm recovering. As

  628. a pastor. God wants me to be known primarily as

  629. a man of prayer and a man committed to the

  630. ministry the word of God. In light of this need,

  631. let's look at the Magnificent Seven chosen by the brethren

  632. to work in unity with the Apostles, who affirmed them

  633. by the Layan on his hands, Acts six, five and

  634. Six's read their names quickly and the saying please the

  635. whole multitude. They chose Stephen, a man what does it

  636. say full of faith in the Holy Spirit? And Philip

  637. Prachorus Nicanner, Timmin Parmenis and Nicholas at Proselyte from Antioch,

  638. and whom they set before the Apostles when they had prayed,

  639. they laid hands on them that doesn't mean they beat

  640. them up. It means they consecrated them. Each of these

  641. men have a name that means something very important in

  642. their character. In the Bible, a man's name where a

  643. woman's name is significant. Number one. Stephen was the first

  644. of the Magnificent Seven. Stephen's name means corona in Greek,

  645. and the word for a crown or wreath of victory

  646. comes from his name. Stephen is the one who endured

  647. under the threat of death. He was stoned, he testified

  648. for God full of faith. He wasn't just a servant

  649. the church. He was a witness, and he could teach

  650. and preach too. And Stephen gave witness that he will

  651. have that wreath, that crown of victory, because he finished

  652. to the end. He is the mightiest of the seven.

  653. He's at the first. The second is Philip, No doubt

  654. who Philip, the evangelist who had four lovely daughters in

  655. the faith. Philip's name in Hebrew, not in Hebrew and Greek,

  656. means lover of horses. Anybody loved riding horses. Now, don't

  657. be offended by this. This is true. In the Bible.

  658. Horses are a prophetic and linguistic symbol for women. There's

  659. no amen's there. I won't tell you why. Remember Solomon

  660. said in the Song of Solomon, like a mare of

  661. Pharaoh's court is my bride. Shouldn't we say, oh, it's beautiful? Now?

  662. Why would he say that? Because he was thinking differently

  663. than we do today. Flowing graceful hair, is that a

  664. good thing? I'm on tender ground today. Number two, speedy

  665. and graceful. Isn't that good? Formally? And a horse makes

  666. those beautiful sounds which can draw you closer. That's why

  667. the symbol is there. In chiastic imagery, it's also there.

  668. I've noticed this. Philip, no doubt. Philip the Evangels, had

  669. four lovely daughters and the faith. He loved his little

  670. girls as a good Christian father should. He was mighty

  671. indeed to share his faith with others and his girls,

  672. and as a family they were evangelistic. Philip led the

  673. Ethiopian unit to Christ, and he baptized him. To my knowledge,

  674. besides Ezekiel the prophet or maybe even Elijah, who had

  675. has said he at times to be caught up by

  676. the Spirit, he may be the only person to have

  677. been teleported by the Holy Spirit like star, trek of thing,

  678. beamed here, beamed there, quantum teleportation to the right spot

  679. from Akutas to Ashtodd. If I got that right, God

  680. just transported him. I would love to go to Hawaii

  681. like that. If the Holy Spirit should ever see the need,

  682. let me go for a weekend. Procreus is the third

  683. of the Magnificent seven. His name only appears here in

  684. the Greek New Testament. His name means choir director, perhaps

  685. first of a happy bunch. Now when we get people

  686. up front and they're leading out, shouldn't they look happy?

  687. Shouldn't there songs be joyful up that we wanted to

  688. sing together. Well, you need a Procreus, You need the

  689. first of the chorus, the choir director, to lead out.

  690. So he evidently had music in his DNA. Number four

  691. Nicanner is the fourth of the Magnificent seven. His name

  692. means men of victory. As a Christian leaders, we are

  693. not called to be weak in life. We're called to

  694. be what come on, say it with me, strong, victorious,

  695. not pessimistic. Number five Timan is the fifth of the

  696. Magnificent seven. His name means honor, honor. To lead the church,

  697. you must be a person of honor in the church.

  698. That means you come to church. I mean it's hard

  699. to be honored in the church. You don't even show up.

  700. Living in the slot bucket in your personal life will

  701. not make you a manner a woman of honor in

  702. the church. What you watch, what you do, how you

  703. spend your free time, friend, it matters to God and

  704. in the church. What you stand for under pressure also

  705. matters to the church. An honorable person will not cave

  706. under pressure. They will endure Proverbs A twelve. Before destruction,

  707. the heart of a man is haughty, and before honor

  708. is humility Proverbs twenty one to twenty one. He who

  709. follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor. Number

  710. six Promenius is the sixth of the Magnificent seven. His

  711. name means to stay by one side. Now the holy

  712. spirit's called a peraclate. It means called along the side

  713. of another. He's the counselor the peraclate. So Promenius's name

  714. means in an essence, loyalty his name. His name means

  715. you don't turn your back on people you are devoted

  716. to in the church. You hang in there, and you minister,

  717. not fleeing the coup when the pressure is on you. Friends,

  718. we need a lot more Parmeniuses in the church who

  719. will hang in there to make a difference with others.

  720. When I come to these children Saba schools, and I

  721. see our leadership there, and Jeb who came into the

  722. church at the World Bank Bible Study, ministering consistently to

  723. our children week after week, with the other leaders there

  724. in that group. And I see Marcia d and I

  725. see Felicia, and Jim and John and others here hanging

  726. in there. Whether they have a hundred in their class

  727. or one. They're like Parmenius, the last of the Magnificent Seven,

  728. is not the least important of the seven. He's just

  729. as important as the rest. The seventh man's name is Nicholas,

  730. like Saint Nick. I've been to Saint Nicholas's tomb in Turkey,

  731. the real Santa Claus. The seventh man's name is Nicholas,

  732. identified in the list as a proselyte from Antioch. Nicholas

  733. name stands apart from the others because he's identified as

  734. a convert to the church. Now think about that, Nicholas

  735. name means victory over the people or victorious people. He

  736. bear his name bears testimony of the fact that he's

  737. not a liability in the church for being a convert

  738. to the church. You're not a second rate believer because

  739. you weren't born into the church. The Church is renewed

  740. by those who join its ranks by conversion and evangelism.

  741. It inspires others to serve God, to renew their lives

  742. who have grown up in the church. We need more

  743. in the church to revitalize it, to challenge third and

  744. fourth generation believers in our church who have grown up

  745. with it and don't even know what the faith is anymore.

  746. So what was the practical outcome of the collaborative choosing

  747. of the Magnificent Seven Acts sixty seven? Then the Word

  748. of God spread and the number of disciples multiplied greatly

  749. in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were

  750. obedient to the faith. As a result of these men

  751. using their gifts for God, the apostles were more effective

  752. as ministers of the gospel. In fact, the whole church

  753. was more effective. They won new thought leaders to the

  754. church from the priesthood, and these converted priests became abeat

  755. of the faith, and they empowered the church with knowledge

  756. and understanding that they could bring into their conversion experience

  757. in these seven. If these seven men had not been

  758. obedient to the faith, they would not have made a

  759. difference at all in the winning of others to the faith.

  760. I asked the question, you desire to be someone great

  761. in the church, then take your lessons from the Magnificent Seven.

  762. The Magnificent Seven modeled their lives after the example of Jesus,

  763. who shared it with his disciples, the true pensive principle

  764. of greatness. And here's where I like the end mark

  765. ten forty two. But Jesus called them to himself and

  766. said to them, you know that those who are considered

  767. rulers over the gentiles lorded over them, and their great

  768. ones exercise authority over them. Yet shall not be so

  769. among you. But whoever desires to become great among you

  770. shall be your servant, and whoever, if you desires to

  771. be first, shall be slave of all. For even the

  772. Son of Man did not come to be served, but

  773. to serve and to give his life a ransom for

  774. the many. The first of the Magnificent Seven was the

  775. first to die for Jesus Christ as the first martyr

  776. in the Christian Church, Stephen, the first of the Seven

  777. full of faith in the Holy Spirit. He has proof

  778. that being mighty means being a mighty humble servant for

  779. others and giving your life for the Church. You're a bother.

  780. We'd do it a little longer today. Thank you for

  781. letting us look inside and realize it's not the purpose

  782. of the Word of God or the Holy Spirit to

  783. put anyone down. Thank you that you love us. Thank

  784. you that you died for us. Thank you that our

  785. sins are covered. Now, Lord, help us to do something

  786. with that. Help us to get up and rise to

  787. our calling as Christians and to find our role in

  788. bringing Christ back to this earth. In Jesus' name, Amen,
