  1. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this Easter holiday that we just had.

  2. Thank you for this new turn back.

  3. ! And we pray that as we consider the glorious truths of Scripture,

  4. ! glorious truths of who you are, would you please help us to understand these weighty, these lofty things.

  5. We need your help with this. We need your spirit.

  6. And so please, would you be at work today,

  7. giving us, transforming and renewing our minds.

  8. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. And welcome to Sunday School, everyone. Welcome back.

  10. If you're new to Adult Sunday School, welcome.

  11. Or if you're just new in the past few months, welcome.

  12. It's great to have you.

  13. Or if you're just a veteran and you've been coming for the past few years,

  14. welcome back. Hope you've had a good Easter.

  15. And whether you're new to Adult Sunday School or you've been coming for years, maybe decades,

  16. before we begin our new series, I just want to kind of lay out what Sunday School is.

  17. Okay, so just stick with me for a few minutes.

  18. I want us to think what we're doing here every week and why we're doing this, the purpose of it.

  19. So I just want us to think, what is Adult Sunday School?

  20. Well, in Adult Sunday School, we're here.

  21. The main objective that I love to kind of do here is I want us to learn doctrine.

  22. So I want us to see what the Bible teaches about different topics of the Bible,

  23. like topics like God, topics like the cross, which we did last term, the church, covenants.

  24. Right. That's what doctrine is.

  25. Doctrine just means teaching.

  26. It's different topics of the Bible.

  27. And I want us to just get a clear and a deep understanding of these things.

  28. And so if learning about the Bible is like learning about animals.

  29. All right.

  30. There are two ways that you can learn about animals.

  31. So one way is you can go on a safari and kind of see the animals as they come.

  32. All right.

  33. So you kind of you go in your van through the wild and say, OK, well, there's a giraffe.

  34. You learn a bit about giraffes.

  35. Oh, there's an elephant.

  36. Oh, there's another elephant.

  37. Oh, there's a lion.

  38. Oh, there's a warthog.

  39. Right.

  40. And you learn the animals as they come along.

  41. Well, that's a bit like preaching.

  42. OK, so you can learn about the Bible just as you can travel through the wild of it.

  43. Or you can learn about animals by going to the zoo.

  44. Right.

  45. And you can gather all the giraffes into one place and learn everything about giraffes and gather all the lions together and learn about lions.

  46. Well, the zoo is like Sunday school.

  47. OK, every week we're gathering into one place what the Bible says about the church or the Holy Spirit or this term, the sovereignty of God.

  48. And we're going to learn in that way.

  49. OK, and why adult Sunday school?

  50. What's the purpose?

  51. Well, it's about transforming our minds and our hearts.

  52. So look at Romans 12.

  53. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  54. So as Christians, we are called, do you see, for our minds to be transformed and renewed.

  55. So to think in the way that God wants us to think.

  56. So to view the world and God and salvation and ourselves and everything in the way that God wants us to.

  57. Right. So you can think as a non-Christian and you can think as a Christian.

  58. And this calls us to think as a Christian.

  59. And that's what happens when we go to the zoo.

  60. Right. Adult Sunday school is there for our minds to be transformed and to help us to think clearly and deeply as Christians.

  61. And that means for our hearts to be transformed, too.

  62. So because the more we understand these things, do you see in Romans 12, the more we are able to live well as Christians, to discern what is the will of God,

  63. to discern what is good from bad, right from wrong.

  64. And that will lead us to worship and love God in the right way.

  65. Right.

  66. And so adult Sunday school, in a nutshell, is this.

  67. We are going to the zoo to have our minds and hearts transformed.

  68. Right. So welcome to the zoo this morning.

  69. Welcome.

  70. And this term, the doctrine I want us to think about is the sovereignty of God.

  71. So that's the section of the zoo we're going to this half term.

  72. And God's sovereignty.

  73. You might have heard that word.

  74. Maybe you haven't.

  75. God's sovereignty means his rule and his power and authority and his plan over all creation.

  76. So the sovereignty of God, it's basically it's the kingship of God over creation.

  77. So that's why we use the word sovereign when it comes to king.

  78. So King Charles is sometimes referred to as the sovereign over our nation.

  79. Well, look how God is described in the Bible.

  80. One Timothy six.

  81. He who is the blessed and only sovereign, the king of kings and lord of lords.

  82. Psalm 22 for kingship belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

  83. So even at just a first glance of who God is, first glance of scripture,

  84. before we even get into the details, we can see at the very least, God has something called sovereignty.

  85. He is the sovereign.

  86. He rules and has authority and is king.

  87. But this half term, I want us to really unpack what that means.

  88. What that involves and how that works with things like free will and salvation and predestination and the problem of evil, things like that.

  89. So thinking about the purpose of Sunday school.

  90. So the purpose of this term is for our minds to be transformed,

  91. to think about God's sovereignty and rule over this world in the right way,

  92. in a way that honours him and in a way that I hope will comfort you.

  93. And I want us also during this half time to answer questions that can often trouble or confuse us.

  94. Because it's this area of God's sovereignty, this area of the zoo,

  95. where we often scratch our heads big time and we just puzzle over,

  96. but hold on, God's sovereignty, how can that really be, right?

  97. And often we can puzzle about these things,

  98. either because we're not thinking about God's sovereignty in the right way,

  99. or we're just not realising where there is mystery and kind of humbly acknowledging the mystery.

  100. And so we won't answer everything about God's sovereignty really neatly this half term,

  101. but I want us to think about it in the right way

  102. and to clear confusion where there can be clarity,

  103. but to also acknowledge mystery where there is mystery.

  104. So I want our hearts to be transformed in all of this.

  105. I want us to, as we just think about God and his sovereignty over this world,

  106. I want us to trust even more in God's power,

  107. to be comforted by his care and just to be humbled where there is mystery.

  108. Now, we won't get into all the details of free will or election all at once, right?

  109. So today I wanted to just do a bit of an introduction to God's sovereignty,

  110. and I'm guaranteed that's going to raise questions in your mind like,

  111. oh wait, oh hold on, but if that's true,

  112. then what about free will and our decisions?

  113. And wait, hold on, how does that work with sin and the fall?

  114. And so those questions will come up, all right?

  115. Let me just encourage you, just hold on to those questions.

  116. We're going to get onto that over the weeks.

  117. I'm going to spend a whole week on free will and God's sovereignty,

  118. a whole week on election and predestination,

  119. a whole week on the problem of evil.

  120. In fact, two weeks on that, all right?

  121. All right, so we're going to get onto it.

  122. So just be patient with that.

  123. And it's actually best to when we get to those,

  124. to deal with those issues,

  125. it's best to kind of slowly build up the foundations

  126. and then get to that,

  127. because you need a lot of things in place

  128. and thinking the right way before we get there.

  129. But today I want us to think about what it means for God to be sovereign.

  130. Okay, he has sovereignty.

  131. We've seen that just from those two verses.

  132. He is king.

  133. Almost all Christians can agree on that.

  134. But the key thing to ask is,

  135. okay, but what is God sovereign over?

  136. And in what way is he sovereign over those things?

  137. And there are some, and so we might ask,

  138. are there some things he isn't sovereign over?

  139. Okay, he's king, but like,

  140. maybe he's not king of everything.

  141. Things he isn't kind of in control of

  142. or doesn't have a plan for.

  143. And is he sovereign over some things

  144. kind of in a more hands-on way

  145. and other things in a bit more kind of a standoffish way?

  146. That's what I want us to see today.

  147. So I want us to just jump in,

  148. and I'm not trying to answer this question.

  149. What is God sovereign over?

  150. It's my first point today.

  151. And I want you to break out into groups,

  152. and I've got you a big table there,

  153. 12 different sections.

  154. And I want you to look up the verses in this chart.

  155. And each kind of section tells us

  156. what God is sovereign over.

  157. Okay, so let's do the first one together.

  158. So first row, Genesis 1-1.

  159. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  160. And so the next section,

  161. God is sovereign over dot, dot, dot.

  162. I'll give you the answer.

  163. God is sovereign over creation, right?

  164. There is one creator.

  165. God is the one who is in control

  166. and has authority over creation.

  167. He is the creator, right?

  168. So there you go.

  169. You can just write creation in that box.

  170. And I'll go for the rest of the 11.

  171. I'll give you six minutes for this.

  172. Try and work quickly through them.

  173. You don't need to kind of write a big essay in that box.

  174. Just if you think,

  175. okay, he's sovereign over this thing,

  176. boom, write it in.

  177. I'll give you six minutes.

  178. Go for it.

  179. Okay, let's bring it back together.

  180. So, minds active.

  181. Everyone on standby,

  182. because I'm going to be picking on you.

  183. So, number two,

  184. Psalm 135.

  185. Beth, what is God's sovereign over?

  186. What did you write?

  187. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  188. Sorry, I caught you off guard.

  189. Nature, okay?

  190. That's exactly it.

  191. So, God is completely in charge over nature.

  192. So, weather patterns

  193. and atoms in the sky

  194. aren't random.

  195. They aren't out of his control.

  196. No, he is the one who makes the clouds rise.

  197. He makes lightning strike

  198. and brings forth wind.

  199. It is not just Mother Nature

  200. out there doing its thing.

  201. God is in control

  202. and in charge

  203. and determining

  204. all the events of nature.

  205. Right?

  206. So, you can write nature in that box.

  207. How about number three?

  208. David Fels.

  209. What do you get for that?

  210. I wasn't here, but I'm a guest.

  211. Oh, sorry, sorry.

  212. No, I'll pick on Lachis.

  213. The Lord didn't want you to be here.

  214. Yeah, yeah.

  215. Lachis, what do you get for number three?

  216. Times and seasons.

  217. Yeah.

  218. Yeah, okay.

  219. Times and seasons.

  220. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  221. And also, kings,

  222. setting up kings,

  223. removing them,

  224. the events of all those times and seasons.

  225. I put history, right?

  226. Human history.

  227. That might be an easy way

  228. to sum it up, right?

  229. And also,

  230. the boundaries

  231. of everyone's dwelling place,

  232. where every single person

  233. is going to live, right?

  234. Human history.

  235. We can put it there.

  236. So,

  237. history isn't kind of flowing

  238. in a kind of

  239. a cascade of events.

  240. We don't know what's coming next

  241. or God doesn't know

  242. what's coming next.

  243. No.

  244. History is a story

  245. and God is writing it

  246. or he's written it.

  247. Okay?

  248. He's sovereign over it.

  249. How about number four?

  250. So,

  251. a lot is like a

  252. it's like a dice,

  253. basically, right?

  254. Grace.

  255. What did you get for that?

  256. Okay, yeah.

  257. There's a bit of a tricky one.

  258. I kind of wanted to highlight this.

  259. It's randomness

  260. or chance, right?

  261. So,

  262. a dice is rolled.

  263. We think that's random.

  264. We would say random, right?

  265. But actually,

  266. it's every decision

  267. is from the Lord.

  268. Right?

  269. So,

  270. that's why I'm quoting

  271. randomness or chance.

  272. Because actually,

  273. there is no such thing

  274. as random

  275. or chance.

  276. It looks random to us,

  277. but God knows

  278. even how the roll of a dice

  279. is going to go.

  280. Right?

  281. It's from the Lord.

  282. How about number five?

  283. This one's a bit tricky.

  284. I was trying to,

  285. I'll answer this one.

  286. I was just trying to kind of capture

  287. all the things

  288. that we've seen so far.

  289. So,

  290. God

  291. not only created

  292. everything,

  293. but he

  294. holds everything together.

  295. Moment by moment,

  296. Colossians 1.

  297. All things

  298. hold together in him

  299. or in Christ.

  300. And Matthew 10,

  301. even down to the,

  302. even down to the life

  303. of a sparrow,

  304. God is in control of that.

  305. Right?

  306. What I've said in that box

  307. is providence.

  308. Right?

  309. The term for this

  310. is providence.

  311. God's control

  312. and care

  313. and kind of

  314. hands-on

  315. sovereignty

  316. over every single moment

  317. in creation.

  318. So,

  319. it's not just

  320. he creates

  321. and kind of

  322. creation is set loose

  323. and just

  324. he's kind of

  325. steps back

  326. and it runs on its own.

  327. No,

  328. he is

  329. upholding every moment.

  330. How about number six?

  331. Psalm 139.

  332. Jeremiah,

  333. James,

  334. Harry,

  335. what do you get for that?

  336. Life.

  337. Right.

  338. Yeah.

  339. So,

  340. not just

  341. human history

  342. in the grand sense,

  343. which that is true,

  344. but also down to

  345. individual lives.

  346. Good fist bump.

  347. You deserve a fist bump.

  348. No,

  349. there you go.

  350. Individual human lives,

  351. right?

  352. So,

  353. you formed,

  354. your eyes saw my

  355. unformed substance.

  356. You created me

  357. in the womb.

  358. all the days of my life

  359. were written

  360. before they even happened.

  361. We see that with Jeremiah.

  362. Jeremiah is an example of that.

  363. So,

  364. it's not just prophets.

  365. He's an example of that.

  366. But that goes for all of us.

  367. And so,

  368. all our lives depend

  369. on the Lord's will.

  370. If the Lord wills,

  371. we will live

  372. and do this or that,

  373. right?

  374. He's sovereign

  375. over every single

  376. life

  377. and the direction

  378. of it.

  379. And number seven,

  380. how about number seven?

  381. Yeah,

  382. Katia?

  383. It's about the heart

  384. and the willingness

  385. of that heart.

  386. Oh,

  387. excellent,

  388. right?

  389. Human hearts

  390. and their willingness,

  391. their decisions.

  392. I put human decisions,

  393. right?

  394. But that,

  395. of course,

  396. that's all connected

  397. to the heart.

  398. And now,

  399. this is where,

  400. I know,

  401. this can kind of be

  402. a bit controversial.

  403. This is where the questions

  404. start arising.

  405. We will get there,

  406. but I just want to see

  407. what the Bible says,

  408. right?

  409. So,

  410. the king's heart.

  411. And it's interesting that,

  412. so if you look at Proverbs 21,

  413. it's interesting it shows,

  414. it highlights the king here

  415. because the king

  416. of the land

  417. is kind of the person

  418. with the most freedom.

  419. Like,

  420. the most choices

  421. of anyone,

  422. right?

  423. It's kind of,

  424. he's the pinnacle

  425. of humanity,

  426. but even the king,

  427. the king's heart

  428. is a stream of water

  429. in the hand of the Lord

  430. and the Lord

  431. directs his heart

  432. wherever he will.

  433. And so,

  434. we may have plans

  435. and decisions,

  436. but it is the Lord

  437. who establishes them.

  438. And we see,

  439. even with someone

  440. like Pharaoh,

  441. a king,

  442. the Lord is in control

  443. of his heart

  444. and what he does,

  445. right?

  446. God is sovereign

  447. over human decisions.

  448. And John,

  449. and look at number eight,

  450. I'll give you this one.

  451. God is sovereign

  452. over salvation,

  453. right?

  454. No one can come

  455. to the Father,

  456. can come to me

  457. unless the Father

  458. who sent me

  459. draws him.

  460. God has mercy

  461. on whom he has mercy.

  462. God saves us

  463. not because of our works,

  464. but because of his own

  465. purpose and grace.

  466. God is completely

  467. in control,

  468. in charge,

  469. and determines

  470. all matters to do

  471. with faith and salvation.

  472. And how about number nine?

  473. Lamentations,

  474. 1 Samuel 2.

  475. Lucy?

  476. We've said

  477. blessings and curses

  478. and sort of

  479. the world

  480. of fortunes

  481. and fortunes.

  482. Yeah,

  483. yeah,

  484. yeah,

  485. yeah,

  486. that's good.

  487. I didn't get a neat

  488. word for this.

  489. I kind of just

  490. thought in my head,

  491. it's the whole spectrum

  492. of events of life,

  493. whether it's the good

  494. and the bad,

  495. life and death,

  496. plenty and poverty.

  497. Think of a neat word

  498. for that,

  499. but you can write that

  500. in the box.

  501. I've kind of written

  502. six words there.

  503. Right?

  504. It's the whole spectrum

  505. from good events

  506. to bad events.

  507. The Lord is in control

  508. of all of them.

  509. Right?

  510. They're not chaos

  511. to him.

  512. Which includes

  513. row 10.

  514. I'll give you this one.

  515. This includes sin

  516. and evil

  517. and Satan himself.

  518. Evil is not

  519. in control of God.

  520. God is in control

  521. of evil.

  522. And it all unfolds,

  523. even sin itself,

  524. it all unfolds

  525. under his sovereign control.

  526. He's the one

  527. in charge of it.

  528. And we're going to see

  529. in a few weeks

  530. that does not mean

  531. God is the author

  532. of sin.

  533. It does not mean

  534. God

  535. commits evil.

  536. No,

  537. God is pure

  538. and good.

  539. God is in charge of evil.

  540. But at the same time,

  541. he is sovereign over it.

  542. And so,

  543. it's either

  544. evil is in charge of God

  545. or God is in charge of evil.

  546. And it's

  547. the latter.

  548. God is in charge of...

  549. And even

  550. Satan,

  551. right?

  552. Satan has to ask

  553. permission

  554. from God

  555. to do something.

  556. And God

  557. is the one

  558. who allows it.

  559. Now,

  560. I know

  561. more questions

  562. will arise in your head.

  563. We will get on to that.

  564. But I want us to see

  565. this is what the Bible says.

  566. Right?

  567. And so,

  568. he's sovereign over sin

  569. and even,

  570. 11,

  571. even

  572. the greatest

  573. sin,

  574. the greatest evil

  575. that has ever been committed,

  576. the crucifixion

  577. of the Son of God.

  578. Right?

  579. So,

  580. Acts 2,

  581. Peter says,

  582. this Jesus,

  583. you crucified

  584. the crowd,

  585. the Jews.

  586. You crucified.

  587. You're responsible.

  588. But look,

  589. it all happened.

  590. He was delivered up

  591. according to

  592. the definite plan

  593. and foreknowledge

  594. of God.

  595. Right?

  596. God

  597. was even in control

  598. over the worst

  599. evil ever committed.

  600. It was the will

  601. of the Lord

  602. to crush

  603. Jesus.

  604. And so,

  605. 12,

  606. what is God's

  607. sovereign over?

  608. Just have a look

  609. with me.

  610. I am God

  611. and there is none

  612. like me

  613. declaring the end

  614. from the beginning.

  615. So,

  616. before

  617. history even starts,

  618. God has declared

  619. all that will happen.

  620. And Romans 11,

  621. he has no

  622. counsellor

  623. to tell him

  624. what to do

  625. or how that unfolds.

  626. But what's that?

  627. Just look at the last line.

  628. For from him

  629. and through him

  630. and to him

  631. are all things.

  632. What is God

  633. sovereign over?

  634. All things.

  635. Okay?

  636. He's in charge,

  637. in control

  638. and determines

  639. all things.

  640. and so,

  641. it is from creation,

  642. all of human history,

  643. all the way

  644. to the end,

  645. to the new heavens

  646. and the new earth.

  647. And everything in between

  648. from human life,

  649. kings rising and falling,

  650. birth,

  651. death,

  652. tombstone,

  653. nature,

  654. everything,

  655. everything,

  656. everything,

  657. all things.

  658. So,

  659. can you see

  660. what this means

  661. for God

  662. to be sovereign?

  663. He controls

  664. and has authority

  665. and determines

  666. and is powerful

  667. over

  668. and has planned

  669. all things.

  670. There aren't

  671. some things

  672. he's sovereign over,

  673. but some things

  674. he can't really touch.

  675. No,

  676. every single thing

  677. in creation,

  678. down to the last

  679. electron,

  680. it is all

  681. under

  682. God's

  683. sovereign control,

  684. all things.

  685. And I know

  686. questions

  687. will come from this.

  688. How can God

  689. be good

  690. but also

  691. sovereign over evil?

  692. How can God

  693. be in control

  694. of human decisions

  695. without us

  696. just being robots?

  697. And we will

  698. get on to that,

  699. but this is just

  700. a fundamental thing

  701. we first need

  702. to establish

  703. and must see

  704. that the Bible

  705. clearly teaches

  706. God is sovereign

  707. over all things.

  708. And there's something

  709. else we need

  710. to see about that.

  711. I want us to see

  712. God is sovereign

  713. over all these things

  714. because

  715. he has planned

  716. and declared it

  717. from all eternity.

  718. And this is the next

  719. thing I want to see.

  720. We'll try and do

  721. questions at the end

  722. or I'll try to avoid

  723. questions at the end

  724. and try to overrun.

  725. But this is the second point.

  726. God has an eternal decree.

  727. God has an eternal decree.

  728. So look at Isaiah 46

  729. again in box 12.

  730. So do you see

  731. that language

  732. in Isaiah 46?

  733. God declares

  734. the end

  735. from the beginning.

  736. Do you see

  737. he has a counsel

  738. and a purpose

  739. for all things.

  740. And this is what

  741. is often called

  742. God's eternal decree

  743. or eternal will.

  744. right?

  745. We see it in Ephesians 1

  746. as well.

  747. This kind of has a focus

  748. on salvation with it

  749. and we're going to look

  750. at that next week.

  751. But just look at this

  752. eternal decree.

  753. Ephesians 1.

  754. He chose us in him

  755. before the foundation

  756. of the world.

  757. Before creation.

  758. He predestined us

  759. for adoption

  760. as sons

  761. through Jesus Christ

  762. according to the purpose

  763. of his will.

  764. Having been predestined

  765. according to the purpose

  766. of him

  767. who works all things

  768. according to the counsel

  769. of his will.

  770. So look what the Bible teaches.

  771. Before time

  772. or creation

  773. even came to be

  774. in eternity past

  775. in God's divine mind

  776. God had thought

  777. and planned

  778. and purposed

  779. and willed

  780. all that will happen

  781. in creation.

  782. And it will all happen

  783. according to the counsel

  784. of his will.

  785. What he wants

  786. what he says.

  787. And the Westminster Confession

  788. of Faith

  789. which is kind of our guide

  790. in Sunday school

  791. our guide through the zoo.

  792. It says this

  793. look at chapter 3

  794. verse 1

  795. article 1

  796. God

  797. from all eternity

  798. did by the most wise

  799. and holy counsel

  800. of his own will

  801. freely

  802. and unchangeably

  803. ordain

  804. whatsoever

  805. comes to pass.

  806. Ordain

  807. is decree

  808. declare

  809. state

  810. kind of

  811. pre-plan

  812. whatsoever

  813. comes to pass.

  814. So it's like

  815. before God said

  816. let there be light

  817. before he said that

  818. he already

  819. kind of

  820. had a blueprint

  821. and a comprehensive

  822. plan

  823. for the entire universe.

  824. He kind of

  825. had all the history

  826. books written

  827. already

  828. and then

  829. when he said

  830. let there be light

  831. it all just

  832. started happening

  833. according to that

  834. blueprint.

  835. And as our lives

  836. happen

  837. and each

  838. moment

  839. passes

  840. each moment

  841. is unfolding

  842. exactly

  843. as God

  844. has planned

  845. and declared

  846. it to be.

  847. The history books

  848. are already written

  849. and now it's

  850. unfolding.

  851. And this is

  852. expressing

  853. the teaching of

  854. you may have

  855. heard this word

  856. predestination.

  857. This is the

  858. biblical teaching

  859. that God

  860. has

  861. pre-planned

  862. or predestined

  863. all things

  864. in creation

  865. in history.

  866. And as soon

  867. as you hear

  868. predestination

  869. you might

  870. get

  871. shudders

  872. down your

  873. spine

  874. might strike

  875. terror in your

  876. heart

  877. you may not

  878. like this word

  879. you might think

  880. it's all just

  881. kind of a bit

  882. philosophical

  883. but actually

  884. I want us to

  885. see

  886. predestination

  887. and God's

  888. eternal decree

  889. and God's

  890. sovereignty

  891. over all things

  892. this is all

  893. just fundamental

  894. to God

  895. being God.

  896. Okay.

  897. So I want you

  898. to think of it

  899. like this.

  900. God

  901. what is God?

  902. God is

  903. the creator

  904. of all things.

  905. All things.

  906. right?

  907. And this

  908. means

  909. all things

  910. are dependent

  911. on him.

  912. I want to

  913. extend that

  914. line

  915. making sure

  916. you see

  917. it's all

  918. dependent

  919. on God

  920. hanging on

  921. him.

  922. Right?

  923. Nothing can

  924. exist without

  925. God.

  926. There is nothing

  927. independent from

  928. him.

  929. Nothing that

  930. doesn't need

  931. him for life

  932. or existence.

  933. There's nothing

  934. out here

  935. exists floating

  936. but I don't

  937. need God

  938. exist on

  939. my own.

  940. No.

  941. All things

  942. are dependent

  943. on God

  944. and God

  945. is dependent

  946. on nothing.

  947. God is the

  948. source of all

  949. things.

  950. He has no

  951. source.

  952. And so all

  953. that happens,

  954. it happens

  955. because God

  956. says so.

  957. because in

  958. eternity God

  959. decreed and

  960. declares all

  961. that we're

  962. being.

  963. He declares

  964. the end from

  965. the beginning.

  966. So everything,

  967. all things,

  968. hang on God's

  969. word and his

  970. plan.

  971. Nothing can

  972. happen outside

  973. of God's

  974. plan.

  975. And so that

  976. includes all

  977. that we've seen

  978. in the timeline.

  979. So that timeline

  980. on the back,

  981. right?

  982. It's all

  983. things.

  984. Creation,

  985. new heavens,

  986. new earth,

  987. human history,

  988. kings,

  989. life and

  990. death,

  991. cross,

  992. everything.

  993. And this,

  994. this is

  995. simply what

  996. it means

  997. for God

  998. to be God

  999. and Lord.

  1000. This is what

  1001. it means

  1002. to be

  1003. eternal

  1004. and all

  1005. knowing.

  1006. He knows

  1007. all things

  1008. and knows

  1009. the future

  1010. and knows

  1011. the past

  1012. and knows

  1013. all things

  1014. that are

  1015. happening

  1016. right now

  1017. and is in

  1018. control of

  1019. all of it

  1020. because he

  1021. has decreed

  1022. and predestined

  1023. all of it

  1024. before the

  1025. foundation of

  1026. the world.

  1027. And what

  1028. does God

  1029. use or

  1030. rely on

  1031. to do that,

  1032. to make that

  1033. plan?

  1034. what's

  1035. above him?

  1036. Nothing.

  1037. It is all,

  1038. it's his

  1039. language of

  1040. Ephesians 1,

  1041. according to

  1042. the counsel

  1043. of his

  1044. will.

  1045. It's all

  1046. based on

  1047. what God

  1048. in his

  1049. perfect wisdom

  1050. has decided.

  1051. Look at

  1052. Romans 11,

  1053. who does he

  1054. consult?

  1055. Who's his

  1056. counselor?

  1057. No one.

  1058. Which means

  1059. when God

  1060. decreed all

  1061. things,

  1062. he didn't

  1063. look into

  1064. the future

  1065. and see

  1066. what creation

  1067. and humans

  1068. might choose

  1069. to do

  1070. and then

  1071. base his

  1072. plan on

  1073. that.

  1074. As if God

  1075. makes this

  1076. thing called

  1077. creation,

  1078. this concoction

  1079. and it's

  1080. let loose

  1081. and it's

  1082. a bit out

  1083. of God's

  1084. hands,

  1085. he doesn't

  1086. know what's

  1087. coming next

  1088. and he

  1089. doesn't

  1090. intervene

  1091. too much

  1092. out of

  1093. love.

  1094. And so

  1095. he looks

  1096. through the

  1097. corridor of

  1098. time of

  1099. what that

  1100. creation is

  1101. going to

  1102. do,

  1103. kind of

  1104. looks ahead

  1105. and he

  1106. sees the

  1107. choices

  1108. and the

  1109. decisions

  1110. and the

  1111. preferences

  1112. of that

  1113. creation

  1114. he's just

  1115. made.

  1116. As if

  1117. he looks

  1118. into the

  1119. future

  1120. and sees

  1121. Andrew

  1122. Quay in

  1123. 2026

  1124. and oh

  1125. that's what

  1126. Andrew likes

  1127. to choose

  1128. and oh

  1129. that's what

  1130. he wants

  1131. there and

  1132. oh he

  1133. wants to

  1134. live in

  1135. Ealing,

  1136. okay,

  1137. okay I

  1138. like that,

  1139. I see

  1140. that.

  1141. And then

  1142. so he

  1143. starts writing

  1144. his decree

  1145. according to

  1146. that and

  1147. then somehow

  1148. that's the

  1149. plan that

  1150. happens.

  1151. That's not

  1152. the case.

  1153. That is a

  1154. wrong teaching

  1155. called,

  1156. do it in,

  1157. do it in,

  1158. that's a

  1159. wrong teaching

  1160. called open

  1161. theism.

  1162. You don't

  1163. need to

  1164. remember this,

1165. I'm just giving you the term

1166. just in case I come

  1167. across it,

  1168. open theism.

  1169. And this teaching

  1170. basically says

  1171. there's kind of a

  1172. back and forth

  1173. between

  1174. creation.

  1175. creation.

  1176. And so

  1177. God creates

  1178. fine,

  1179. God creates

  1180. all things,

  1181. all things.

  1182. But,

  1183. but also

  1184. creation is

  1185. free

  1186. in a way

  1187. that God

  1188. doesn't kind

  1189. of sovereignly

  1190. declare

  1191. anything to

  1192. be.

  1193. It kind

  1194. of just,

  1195. it happens

  1196. because it's

  1197. its own

  1198. thing.

  1199. And so

  1200. that means

  1201. God

  1202. learns

  1203. from his

  1204. creation.

  1205. Creation

  1206. provides him

  1207. knowledge of

  1208. what it's

  1209. going to

  1210. do.

  1211. And so

  1212. God plans

  1213. history with

  1214. that in

  1215. mind.

  1216. And now

  1217. just think

  1218. about that.

  1219. What is

  1220. the issue

  1221. with that?

  1222. Really,

  1223. that makes

  1224. God

  1225. dependent

  1226. on

  1227. creation.

  1228. Creation

  1229. is now

  1230. this thing

  1231. that feeds

  1232. God

  1233. knowledge

  1234. that he

  1235. didn't have

  1236. before.

  1237. And in

  1238. that case,

  1239. what does

  1240. that mean

  1241. for all

  1242. that we've

  1243. just seen?

  1244. All

  1245. things

  1246. aren't

  1247. from

  1248. God.

  1249. God

  1250. doesn't

  1251. really

  1252. declare

  1253. the end

  1254. from the

  1255. beginning.

  1256. God

  1257. can't

  1258. predestine

  1259. us for

  1260. adoption.

  1261. In fact,

  1262. there's no

  1263. guarantee

  1264. God can

  1265. do anything

  1266. in the

  1267. future because

  1268. he's

  1269. dependent

  1270. on creation

  1271. and our

  1272. choices

  1273. to plan

  1274. the future.

  1275. And now,

  1276. open theists

  1277. wouldn't

  1278. admit that.

  1279. God

  1280. does have

  1281. a plan

  1282. and he's

  1283. going to

  1284. bring it

  1285. all to

  1286. completion

  1287. and there

  1288. is going

  1289. to be a

  1290. new heavens

  1291. and new

  1292. earth.

  1293. But they

  1294. can't

  1295. account for

  1296. that,

  1297. for this

  1298. way of

  1299. thinking

  1300. about

  1301. God

  1302. because he's

  1303. dependent

  1304. on us

  1305. for the

  1306. future.

  1307. And that

  1308. ultimately

  1309. leaves God

  1310. powerless

  1311. over this

  1312. world.

  1313. He isn't

  1314. really the

  1315. sovereign.

  1316. And in

  1317. this model,

  1318. God

  1319. ceases to

  1320. be God.

  1321. there is

  1322. something

  1323. supreme

  1324. over God

  1325. and something

  1326. that he

  1327. actually

  1328. learns from

  1329. and needs.

  1330. But look

  1331. what the

  1332. confession

  1333. says,

  1334. article 2,

  1335. chapter 3.

  1336. Although God

  1337. knows whatsoever

  1338. may or can

  1339. come to

  1340. pass upon

  1341. all supposed

  1342. conditions,

  1343. he can look

  1344. through the

  1345. corridor of

  1346. time,

  1347. so to speak,

  1348. yet he has

  1349. not decreed

  1350. anything because

  1351. he foresaw

  1352. it as future.

  1353. God is

  1354. sovereign over

  1355. all things

  1356. because he

  1357. has declared

  1358. it.

  1359. It's all

  1360. happening

  1361. according to

  1362. his perfect

  1363. and holy

  1364. will.

  1365. And it's

  1366. here we

  1367. might ask,

  1368. but doesn't

  1369. God will

  1370. things that

  1371. don't happen?

  1372. So 1

  1373. Timothy 2,

  1374. God desires

  1375. all people to

  1376. be saved and

  1377. come to the

  1378. knowledge of

  1379. truth.

  1380. 2 Peter 3,

  1381. the Lord is

  1382. not willing

  1383. that any

  1384. should perish.

  1385. But what

  1386. might we

  1387. ask?

  1388. So does

  1389. God will

  1390. things that

  1391. don't come

  1392. to pass?

  1393. How do we

  1394. square all

  1395. of this

  1396. with things

  1397. like this?

  1398. God

  1399. commanding

  1400. things to

  1401. happen?

  1402. Well,

  1403. it's here that

  1404. we need to

  1405. make a

  1406. distinction

  1407. between God's

  1408. hidden will

  1409. and God's

  1410. revealed will.

  1411. We'll finish

  1412. in one minute.

  1413. The difference

  1414. between God's

  1415. decretive will

  1416. and his

  1417. prescriptive will

  1418. or his

  1419. sovereign will

  1420. and his

  1421. moral will.

  1422. That's in the

  1423. little chart

  1424. on your sheet.

  1425. So God's

  1426. sovereign will

  1427. is what he

  1428. has planned

  1429. for all

  1430. things from

  1431. eternity.

  1432. And that's

  1433. secret to us.

  1434. That's in God's

  1435. mind.

  1436. We can't know

  1437. what he's

  1438. planned.

  1439. That's his

  1440. decretive will.

  1441. But God has

  1442. also revealed

  1443. what he wants

  1444. from us,

  1445. our duty.

  1446. He wants

  1447. everyone to

  1448. believe in

  1449. Christ and

  1450. be saved.

  1451. That's why we

  1452. preach to

  1453. everyone.

  1454. That is God's

  1455. will.

  1456. Come to

  1457. Christ,

  1458. repent and

  1459. believe.

  1460. he wants

  1461. that from

  1462. everyone.

  1463. It's the

  1464. simple call

  1465. to the

  1466. gospel.

  1467. And that's

  1468. his moral

  1469. command to

  1470. us.

  1471. It's just

  1472. like you

  1473. shall not

  1474. murder.

  1475. His will

  1476. is everyone

  1477. on earth

  1478. should not

  1479. murder.

  1480. That's his

  1481. will.

  1482. But it's

  1483. his moral

  1484. will.

  1485. It's his

  1486. revealed

  1487. will.

  1488. But that

  1489. doesn't mean

  1490. everyone's

  1491. going to

  1492. obey that

  1493. revealed

  1494. will.

  1495. And when

  1496. they don't,

  1497. when there

  1498. is murder

  1499. or someone

  1500. doesn't

  1501. believe in

  1502. Christ,

  1503. that doesn't

  1504. mean God

  1505. isn't in

  1506. control of

  1507. those things.

  1508. He's not

  1509. like, I

  1510. want everyone

  1511. to be saved.

  1512. That's my

  1513. will.

  1514. That's my

  1515. plan.

  1516. But I

  1517. just can't

  1518. do it.

  1519. Right?

  1520. I've

  1521. revealed it,

  1522. but I

  1523. can't really

  1524. do it.

  1525. No.

  1526. This is

  1527. just a

  1528. distinction

  1529. of how we

  1530. speak about

  1531. God's

  1532. will.

  1533. It's

  1534. revealed and

  1535. it's hidden.

  1536. There are

  1537. two aspects

  1538. to it.

  1539. And so

  1540. God is

  1541. sovereign over

  1542. all these

  1543. things because

  1544. in eternity

  1545. past, he

  1546. decreed all

  1547. things that

  1548. will come

  1549. to pass.

  1550. And it's

  1551. all according

  1552. to the

  1553. purpose of

  1554. his hidden

  1555. decretive

  1556. sovereign

  1557. will.

  1558. And why

  1559. is all this

  1560. important?

  1561. Let me

  1562. leave you

  1563. with this.

  1564. This is

  1565. important because

  1566. this makes

  1567. God,

  1568. God.

  1569. If we are

  1570. to have a

  1571. lower view

  1572. of God's

  1573. sovereignty

  1574. than this,

  1575. it makes

  1576. God dependent

  1577. on us.

  1578. He's not

  1579. the source

  1580. of all

  1581. life and

  1582. knowledge and

  1583. therefore he's

  1584. not God.

  1585. And so this

  1586. way of

  1587. thinking honours

  1588. who God

  1589. really is.

  1590. But also

  1591. God's sovereignty

  1592. is important

  1593. because this

  1594. means nothing

  1595. in your life

  1596. is out of

  1597. control.

  1598. God is in

  1599. complete control

  1600. of all of

  1601. it.

  1602. He's upholding

  1603. you every

  1604. moment with

  1605. every step

  1606. you take.

  1607. And when

  1608. you belong

  1609. to Christ,

  1610. everything in

  1611. your life

  1612. has a good

  1613. and wise

  1614. purpose.

  1615. Look at

  1616. Romans 8

  1617. 28.

  1618. And we

  1619. know that

  1620. for those

  1621. who love

  1622. God,

  1623. all things

  1624. work together

  1625. for good

  1626. for those

  1627. who are

  1628. called

  1629. according

  1630. to his

  1631. purpose.

  1632. For those

  1633. in Christ,

  1634. God has

  1635. planned and

  1636. purposed all

  1637. things in

  1638. your life

  1639. for what is

  1640. good for

  1641. you.

  1642. Nothing

  1643. is in

  1644. action.

  1645. Nothing

  1646. is out of

  1647. control.

  1648. No problem

  1649. you are

  1650. facing

  1651. is too

  1652. great for

  1653. God to

  1654. deal with

  1655. because

  1656. he is

  1657. the king

  1658. of heaven

  1659. and earth.

  1660. He's not

  1661. dependent.

  1662. And so

  1663. we don't

  1664. need to

  1665. fear the

  1666. future.

  1667. We don't

  1668. need to

  1669. worry about

  1670. God's plan

  1671. for our

  1672. lives because

  1673. nothing ahead

  1674. of us is

  1675. random,

  1676. even that

  1677. roll of

  1678. the dice.

  1679. And we

  1680. know this

  1681. because of

  1682. a fundamental

  1683. truth about

  1684. God.

  1685. God is

  1686. sovereign.
