  1. We are looking tonight for the last time at the theme of story.

  2. Four sermons, we have looked at those four kind of big points that we see throughout scripture.

  3. ! Once upon a time, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and then we see that an enemy entered in.

  4. And thirdly, we see a rescuer came in the Lord Jesus.

  5. And tonight we look at happily ever after.

  6. And my argument is that that is the kind of great overarching theme of the Bible.

  7. And all the stories that we tell each other are kind of pointing us.

  8. They are hinting to us of a greater story.

  9. Someone said to me last week, it was great to be reminded of films of the 90s and the early 2000s.

  10. And I've really enjoyed studying this theme.

  11. I think one of the things I've really enjoyed is those of you who try to take notes.

  12. And so those of you who normally take notes of my structured sermons, realizing that there's not much structure and there's lots of thoughts.

  13. And the notebook shuts.

  14. And about ten minutes later, the Bible shuts.

  15. But I think it's been helpful.

  16. It's been helpful to me to preach in a different way.

  17. And I hope it's been helpful to you.

  18. Next week we start Jeremiah.

  19. Alright.

  20. They lived happily ever after.

  21. Happily ever after.

  22. Wouldn't it be wonderful if that was true?

  23. They lived happily ever after.

  24. They are some of the most beautiful and haunting words that have ever been spoken.

  25. Why does the end of a great story leave us with a lump in our throat?

  26. Why does the end of a TV series that you leave, you finish, leave you kind of longing for more?

  27. And if we've not become entirely cynical, some of the best endings in films and in books and in TV series leave us in tears, don't they?

  28. Why is that?

  29. Well, I've been arguing because God has set eternity in our hearts.

  30. Every story that we tell is an attempt to put into words and images what God has written in our hearts.

  31. Remember how the Chronicles of Narnia end.

  32. Then Aslan turned to them and said,

  33. You do not yet look so happy as I mean you to be.

  34. Lucy said,

  35. We're so afraid of being sent away, Aslan.

  36. And you've sent us back into our own world so often.

  37. No fear of that, said Aslan.

  38. Have you not guessed?

  39. Their hearts leaped and a wild hope rose within them.

  40. There was a real railway accident, said Aslan softly.

  41. Your father and mother and all of you are, as you used to call it, in the Shadowlands, dead.

  42. The term is over.

  43. The holidays have begun.

  44. The dream has ended.

  45. This is the morning.

  46. And as he spoke, he no longer looked to them like a lion.

  47. But the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them.

  48. And for us, this is the end of all the stories.

  49. And we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after.

  50. But for them, it was only the beginning of the real story.

  51. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page.

  52. Now, at last, they were beginning chapter one of the great story.

  53. Which no one on earth has read.

  54. Which goes on forever.

  55. In which every chapter is better than the one before.

  56. It is magnificent writing.

  57. It is even better theology.

  58. There is a longing in the human heart for the happy ever after.

  59. And so firstly, every story has an ending.

  60. Every story, including yours, has an ending.

  61. I wonder if you've faced that.

  62. Even if you get a taste of Eden in this life.

  63. If you're one of the fortunate souls that finds love and happiness in the world.

  64. You cannot hold on to it.

  65. You know this, don't you?

  66. Your health cannot hold out forever.

  67. Age will conquer you.

  68. If you live long enough, one by one, your friends and your loved ones will slip through your hands.

  69. And your work will remain unfinished.

  70. Your time on this stage will come to an end.

  71. Like every person gone before you, there will come a time where you will breathe your last breath.

  72. And then what?

  73. And then what?

  74. And if that is the end of the story, it is a tragedy.

  75. But Beth was right.

  76. Life is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

  77. Sooner or later, life will break your heart.

  78. Or rather, death will break your heart.

  79. Perhaps it's going to take for you to lose someone that you love.

  80. To shake you from that denial.

  81. That the final enemy is death.

  82. It will come.

  83. Every story has an ending.

  84. Is there no way out?

  85. Do we have a future?

  86. Our enemy is a thief.

  87. And it's stolen from our hearts.

  88. The magic wonder.

  89. And the promise of a life lived happily ever after.

  90. We live in a city where very few people live with hope.

  91. To those without faith, our enemy, the devil, has whispered, your story ends with an accident.

  92. And there's nothing really beyond this.

  93. This is as good as it gets.

  94. There's no wonder, is it, that people drink too much.

  95. People eat too much.

  96. And they watch too much TV.

  97. And they anesthetize themselves with scrolling.

  98. And they live beyond their means.

  99. And basically they opt out of thinking.

  100. And if they allow themselves, just for a moment, to feel the depth of their actual longing for life and love and happiness.

  101. But they won't do that.

  102. And if they allow themselves just to think about it for a moment, they will despair.

  103. And so they don't think.

  104. So they escape.

  105. Or more than anything, they numb themselves from reality.

  106. They amuse themselves, as Neil Postman says, to death.

  107. That's what's happening.

  108. Our culture has numbed itself, isn't it?

  109. So it doesn't have to think.

  110. Our phones distract us.

  111. We refuse to allow ourselves any silence or any space just to stop and think.

  112. When you try to drive people to the logical conclusions of their arguments, they refuse to go there.

  113. They opt out.

  114. But what is Act 4?

  115. Act 1.

  116. Once upon a time in the beginning.

  117. Act 2.

  118. Evil enters.

  119. Act 3.

  120. Well, the rescuer, the redeemer comes.

  121. But what is Act 4 in the Bible story?

  122. And it is Revelation 21, verse 4.

    Revelation 21:4

  123. Then I saw, Revelation 21, verse 1.

    Revelation 21:1

  124. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  125. Where's the echo?

  126. Where's the echo?

  127. Deja vu?

  128. Where have you heard that before?

  129. Then I saw a new heavens and a new earth.

  130. How did the Bible begin?

  131. Genesis 1, verse 1.

    Genesis 1:1

  132. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  133. Revelation 21, it's a deliberate echo, isn't it?

  134. And that had been promised in the middle of the Bible.

  135. Isaiah 65, verse 17.

    Isaiah 65:17

  136. Behold, I will create a new heavens and a new earth.

  137. It had been promised by Isaiah.

  138. But it's been foreshadowed by the life of Jesus.

  139. That as he walks through the Middle East 2,000 years ago,

  140. when he touched the blind, they were able to see.

  141. When he touched the deaf, they were able to hear.

  142. When he touched the lame, they leapt up to their feet and walked and danced.

  143. And when he called back the dead, they came to life again.

  144. We see him again and again, wherever humanity was broken, Jesus restoring it.

  145. The coming of the kingdom of God.

  146. He restores the world that he made.

  147. He gives us a trailer of what will one day be.

  148. And God whispers this into the very warp and woof of creation.

  149. He speaks to us through creation of this.

  150. Think of the creation that we enjoy.

  151. Think of the dead of winter.

  152. Winter is great, isn't it, for about a week and a half.

  153. But if it was always winter, you know you get what January was like this year?

  154. It was unbearable, wasn't it?

  155. It went on for months, it seemed.

  156. So dark, so wet, so windy.

  157. If it's also always winter, life is unbearable.

  158. Every tree lifeless.

  159. Every flower gone.

  160. The grass wet and brittle.

  161. And the world cold and silent and bleak.

  162. But spring breaks forth, doesn't it?

  163. The blossom begins to come out on the trees.

  164. The grass begins to grow again.

  165. The daffodils appear and then the bluebells.

  166. Creation is telling us.

  167. It's what we long for.

  168. We long to leave the winter of the world behind.

  169. And if we will listen to creation,

  170. it will point us to the great restoration.

  171. The restoration of spring and summer is pointing us precisely to what God is promising us.

  172. To the miracle that one day he is going to make all things new.

  173. That's what he says in Revelation 21 and verse 5.

  174. He was seated on the throne and said,

  175. Behold, I am making all things new.

  176. There's a new heavens and a new earth.

  177. And of course, this has started already.

  178. Let me read you these words.

  179. Very early on the first day of the week,

  180. when the sun had risen,

  181. they went to the tomb.

  182. And they were saying to one another,

  183. Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?

  184. And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back.

  185. It was very large.

  186. And entering the tomb,

  187. they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

  188. dressed in a white robe,

  189. and they were alarmed.

  190. And he said to them,

  191. Do not be alarmed.

  192. You seek Jesus of Nazareth,

  193. who was crucified.

  194. He is risen.

  195. He is not here.

  196. See the place where they laid him.

  197. But go tell his disciples and Peter that he's going before you to Galilee.

  198. There you will see him,

  199. just as he told you.

  200. He was crucified.

  201. He has risen.

  202. He is not here.

  203. Those are the words which end Mark's gospel.

  204. They are the most stunning,

  205. unbelievable,

  206. happiest ending to a story you could possibly imagine.

  207. But it's not just a story in history.

  208. For those of us who have trusted in Christ,

  209. and are united to Christ,

  210. actually it's our story, isn't it?

  211. Because 1 Corinthians 15, verse 20 to 21 says,

    1 Corinthians 15:20–21

  212. In fact, Christ has been raised from the dead.

  213. He said,

  214. The firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  215. For as a man came death,

  216. by a man also came the resurrection from the dead.

  217. He is the firstfruits.

  218. And because he has risen from the dead,

  219. you and I will rise from the dead.

  220. I get up early on a Sunday morning before the sun is up.

  221. And there's a moment, isn't there,

  222. when you're up that early,

  223. and you start to see just the first bit of light.

  224. You see the sunlight before you see the sun.

  225. There's that first bit of sunlight,

  226. the first rays.

  227. It's not so dark as it was.

  228. What is that telling you?

  229. It's telling you that the sun is coming up.

  230. The daytime is coming.

  231. And so it is with Jesus' resurrection.

  232. We see the light.

  233. And it's telling us that our resurrection is coming too.

  234. As certain as the sun will come up,

  235. when we see the first rays,

  236. as certain is our resurrection,

  237. because of Christ's resurrection.

  238. So the question is this.

  239. Will everyone have a happy ending?

  240. Will everyone have a happy ending?

  241. Jesus told a parable to get our attention.

  242. He actually told a story.

  243. He said the kingdom of heaven

  244. may be compared to a king

  245. who gave a wedding feast for his son,

  246. and he sent his servants

  247. to call those who were invited to the wedding feast.

  248. But they would not come.

  249. And so again,

  250. the king sends another servant saying,

  251. tell those who are invited,

  252. see, I've prepared my dinner,

  253. the reception's ready,

  254. my oxen and my father's calves,

  255. they've been slaughtered,

  256. everything is ready.

  257. Come to the wedding feast.

  258. But they paid no attention.

  259. And they went off.

  260. One to his farm,

  261. another one to his business.

  262. The truth is,

  263. not everyone lives happily ever after.

  264. Because most people

  265. do not want the life

  266. that God offers them.

  267. And they won't come to the wedding reception.

  268. They reject his story.

  269. And they reject him.

  270. And they reject his son.

  271. I was with a group of people recently,

  272. and they were joking around.

  273. They were telling,

  274. they were talking about something

  275. that they'd done.

  276. And one of the people in the group said,

  277. I mean, you'll go to hell for that.

  278. They all laughed.

  279. You know what people think of

  280. when they think of things like that, isn't it?

  281. Don't smoke, don't drink,

  282. don't have one night stands.

  283. Don't drink, don't smoke,

  284. or chew,

  285. or go with girls that do.

  286. Some of those things are sinful.

  287. Some of those things are sinful

  288. when they're taken to excess.

  289. But that isn't really understanding

  290. what sin is.

  291. Primarily,

  292. sin

  293. is a rejection of God.

  294. Primarily,

  295. people are in hell tonight

  296. because they have rejected God.

  297. And they've rejected God's invitation.

  298. They have refused him,

  299. and they've rejected his son.

  300. It is a refusal to let God be God.

  301. It is a refusal to listen to his invitation.

  302. But tonight,

  303. tonight God is patient with you.

  304. He's patient with you.

  305. Not wanting anyone

  306. to perish,

  307. but all to come to repentance.

  308. But if you say to him,

  309. no,

  310. clearly I do not want you,

  311. and I do not want your son.

  312. And if you persist in saying no

  313. and refusing him,

  314. in the end,

  315. God gives you

  316. what you want.

  317. The biblical picture of hell

  318. is that of being outside.

  319. It's of being outside,

  320. of being in darkness.

  321. The picture of hell is death,

  322. not life.

  323. The way that the Bible describes hell,

  324. the way that Jesus describes hell,

  325. is one of bitter regret.

  326. of endless separation,

  327. of being without hope,

  328. of the agony of knowing then

  329. what you should have known now,

  330. but of not being able

  331. to change your circumstances.

  332. George MacDonald,

  333. in his book,

  334. The Last Farthing,

  335. said this,

  336. the man weeks

  337. from the final struggle of death

  338. in absolute loneliness.

  339. Such a loneliness

  340. as in the most miserable moment

  341. of deserted childhood

  342. he never knew.

  343. Not a hint,

  344. not a shadow of anything

  345. outside his consciousness

  346. reaches him.

  347. All is dark,

  348. dark and dumb.

  349. No motion,

  350. not the breath of wind.

  351. Never dream of change.

  352. not a scent

  353. from a far off field.

  354. No sign of God anywhere.

  355. God has so far withdrawn

  356. from the man

  357. he is in God's prison,

  358. his own separated self.

  359. And I have to say to you tonight,

  360. that doesn't have to be

  361. the end of your story.

  362. It doesn't have to end like this.

  363. Stop being proud.

  364. Stop refusing

  365. and rejecting God.

  366. Stop making yourself

  367. the main character

  368. of the story.

  369. Take your place,

  370. rightful place,

  371. in God's story.

  372. And you can be rescued

  373. from a lost eternity.

  374. From an eternity

  375. of regret

  376. and an eternity

  377. of sorrow

  378. and an eternity

  379. of sadness.

  380. And it's why

  381. those who have been

  382. redeemed,

  383. it's why

  384. those who have been

  385. rescued,

  386. we cannot help

  387. but sing.

  388. It's why

  389. when we try to describe

  390. the new creation,

  391. we can't really do it.

  392. What would it be like?

  393. It would be like feasting.

  394. It's described

  395. as the greatest party

  396. you've ever been to.

  397. It's joy unspeakable.

  398. But we also have to say

  399. we're not there yet.

  400. That day

  401. has not yet come.

  402. And so tonight

  403. you have the invitation

  404. of life.

  405. I have set before you

  406. life and death.

  407. Now choose life,

  408. Moses preached

  409. to the Israelites.

  410. That is the offer

  411. of the gospel.

  412. The message of this story,

  413. choose life.

  414. For God so loved

  415. the world that he gave

  416. his one and only son

  417. that whoever believes

  418. in him shall not perish

  419. but have eternal life.

  420. Jesus says,

  421. come to me

  422. that you may have life.

  423. I came that you

  424. might have life

  425. and have it abundantly.

  426. And this is eternal life

  427. that they know you,

  428. the only true God

  429. and Jesus Christ

  430. whom you've sent.

  431. And so the end of the Bible,

  432. Revelation 22,

    Revelation 22:17

  433. verse 17 says,

  434. the bride and the spirit

  435. say come

  436. and let the one

  437. who hears

  438. says come

  439. and let the one

  440. who is thirsty

  441. come.

  442. Let the one

  443. who desires

  444. take

  445. the water

  446. of life

  447. without price.

  448. Act 4

  449. is the happily ever after.

  450. It's the restoration

  451. of life

  452. as it was meant to be.

  453. It's the return

  454. of the beauty

  455. and the intimacy

  456. and the adventure

  457. that you were created

  458. to enjoy

  459. and you've longed

  460. for every day

  461. of your life.

  462. And yet better than that

  463. it's immortal.

  464. Because once

  465. human beings

  466. stood in the garden

  467. and they knew

  468. joy and peace

  469. but they lost it.

  470. But in the new creations

  471. we will never lose it.

  472. It cannot be taken away.

  473. Sunrise

  474. and sunset

  475. tell the tale

  476. every day

  477. remembering

  478. Eden's glory

  479. and foretelling

  480. Eden's return.

  481. And then the king

  482. will say to those

  483. on his right

  484. come you are blessed

  485. by my father.

  486. Take your inheritance

  487. the kingdom prepared

  488. for you since

  489. the creation

  490. of the world.

  491. And Paul tells us

  492. that the inanimate creation

  493. around us

  494. is longing for this.

  495. The trees

  496. stand on tiptoe

  497. waiting

  498. with eager longing

  499. for the revealing

  500. of the sons of God.

  501. Creation

  502. which has been

  503. subject to futility

  504. which goes wrong

  505. has been subjected

  506. to futility

  507. in hope

  508. that one day

  509. creation

  510. will be

  511. set free

  512. released from its

  513. bondage

  514. to corruption

  515. and it will

  516. obtain the freedom

  517. of the glory

  518. of the children

  519. of God.

  520. Romans 8.

  521. But we live

  522. tonight

  523. in between

  524. Acts 3

  525. the triumph

  526. of Christ

  527. and Acts 4

  528. the happily ever after.

  529. we have a glorious

  530. future

  531. in Christ

  532. but this tale

  533. is not over yet.

  534. The story

  535. is not over.

  536. I was thinking

  537. to myself

  538. I think that is

  539. the phrase

  540. that I use

  541. more than

  542. any other phrase

  543. in pastoring

  544. this church.

  545. The story

  546. is not over.

  547. So the heartache

  548. in your life

  549. the unfulfilled

  550. longings

  551. the betrayal

  552. that some of you

  553. have known

  554. the sin

  555. that you continue

  556. to struggle with

  557. the apparent

  558. failure

  559. of your life

  560. the sickness

  561. that will not

  562. go away

  563. the false

  564. accusations

  565. that you struggle

  566. with

  567. the child

  568. that has

  569. rejected

  570. the gospel

  571. and is far away

  572. the difficult

  573. marriage

  574. the separation

  575. that you feel

  576. the story

  577. is not over.

  578. And we are living

  579. in the days

  580. of Christ's victory

  581. but we are not in

  582. the happily ever after yet.

  583. We're not home yet.

  584. Jesus said

  585. I am going to

  586. prepare a place

  587. for you

  588. and I will come back

  589. and take you

  590. to be with me

  591. and in my

  592. father's house

  593. there are many

  594. rooms.

  595. There's plenty

  596. of room

  597. in my father's

  598. house.

  599. And what will it

  600. be like

  601. in my father's

  602. house?

  603. Well

  604. God will dwell

  605. with man

  606. and they will

  607. be his people

  608. and God himself

  609. will be with them

  610. as their God

  611. and he will wipe

  612. away every tear

  613. from their eyes

  614. and death

  615. shall be

  616. no more

  617. and neither

  618. shall there

  619. be mourning

  620. nor crying

  621. nor pain

  622. anymore

  623. for the former

  624. things have

  625. passed away

  626. and he was

  627. seated on the

  628. throne and said

  629. behold I am

  630. making all

  631. things new.

  632. So I've been

  633. arguing that we

  634. live in God's

  635. story

  636. in the beginning

  637. and then evil

  638. enters in

  639. and Christ

  640. comes to

  641. conquer

  642. and then

  643. finally the

  644. happily ever

  645. after.

  646. So three

  647. things about

  648. this story

  649. for you to

  650. take with you

  651. in this week.

  652. The first

  653. thing is this

  654. things are not

  655. what they seem.

  656. Things are not

  657. what they seem.

  658. And where

  659. would we be

  660. if Eve had

  661. recognised

  662. the serpent

  663. for who he

  664. really was?

  665. And then the

  666. carpenter of

  667. Nazareth

  668. fixing coffee

  669. tables and

  670. shelves.

  671. He's not

  672. who he appears

  673. to be either.

  674. There's far

  675. more going on

  676. in this story

  677. than meets the

  678. eye isn't

  679. there?

  680. You live in

  681. a world of

  682. two halves.

  683. One part that

  684. you can see

  685. and one part

  686. that you

  687. can't.

  688. And I

  689. would argue

  690. that you must

  691. live and I

  692. must live as

  693. though the

  694. unseen world

  695. is more

  696. weighty

  697. and more

  698. real

  699. and more

  700. dangerous

  701. than the

  702. part we

  703. can see

  704. because we

  705. live by

  706. faith

  707. and not

  708. by sight.

  709. This week

  710. things are

  711. not what

  712. they seem.

  713. Secondly

  714. this,

  715. we are at

  716. war.

  717. The story

  718. of the

  719. Bible is a

  720. love story.

  721. It's the

  722. greatest love

  723. story.

  724. It's a

  725. beautiful love

  726. story but

  727. it's in the

  728. middle of a

  729. life and

  730. death battle.

  731. Just look

  732. around you.

  733. Look at the

  734. church in this

  735. country.

  736. Look at the

  737. casualties

  738. strewn across

  739. the field.

  740. the lost

  741. souls,

  742. the broken

  743. hearts,

  744. the captives,

  745. those who

  746. fought well

  747. once but

  748. now have been

  749. wounded partly

  750. through their

  751. own fault.

  752. And it is a

  753. war.

  754. war.

  755. And we

  756. must take

  757. this battle

  758. seriously as

  759. Christians.

  760. There is a

  761. war for the

  762. human heart.

  763. And there is a

  764. war for your

  765. heart.

  766. And there is a

  767. war for your

  768. children's heart.

  769. And so fight.

  770. Number three,

  771. and I don't

  772. know really how

  773. to put this,

  774. but number

  775. three this

  776. week,

  777. you matter.

  778. You have a

  779. crucial role

  780. to play.

  781. It is one of

  782. the themes

  783. in films,

  784. the kind of

  785. insignificant

  786. person who

  787. has a vital

  788. role to play.

  789. Think of

  790. Frodo in

  791. Lord of the

  792. Rings,

  793. Lucy Pevensey

  794. in Narnia,

  795. think of

  796. Wheezy in

  797. Toy Story 2.

  798. Think of all

  799. the films,

  800. there is

  801. insignificant

  802. characters

  803. that have

  804. a very

  805. important role

  806. to play.

  807. And I think

  808. I am scared

  809. as a minister

  810. of a reformed

  811. church,

  812. and I think

  813. we are scared

  814. in church

  815. like ours

  816. of a

  817. self-esteem

  818. gospel,

  819. a gospel

  820. where we

  821. put ourselves

  822. at the

  823. centre,

  824. and it's

  825. half the

  826. truth that

  827. is.

  828. It is a

  829. really dangerous

  830. thing to

  831. underestimate

  832. your role

  833. in the

  834. story.

  835. If you do

  836. that,

  837. you'll lose

  838. heart,

  839. you'll miss

  840. your lines.

  841. And this

  842. great story,

  843. this epic

  844. story that

  845. we take our

  846. place in,

  847. you two and

  848. I have also

  849. reached the

  850. point where

  851. we must

  852. find our

  853. courage

  854. and fight

  855. for the

  856. hearts of

  857. others,

  858. for your

  859. family.

  860. You know

  861. the scene

  862. in the

  863. film,

  864. don't you?

  865. It could

  866. be any

  867. film,

  868. really.

  869. The hour

  870. is late,

  871. much time

  872. has been

  873. wasted,

  874. but it's

  875. not too

  876. late.

  877. And there

  878. are great

  879. things to be

  880. done,

  881. and there

  882. are great

  883. sacrifices

  884. to be

  885. made.

  886. And you

  887. won't lose

  888. heart if

  889. you really

  890. understand what

  891. is going

  892. on in

  893. God's

  894. purposes,

  895. in God's

  896. story.

  897. And you

  898. won't lose

  899. heart where

  900. this story

  901. is headed,

  902. and what

  903. your lover

  904. has promised

  905. you.

  906. And so

  907. this week,

  908. I think it's

  909. encouraging,

  910. isn't it,

  911. going to this

  912. week with

  913. these three

  914. things.

  915. Things are

  916. not what

  917. they seem.

  918. You are

  919. at war in

  920. this love

  921. story.

  922. And you

  923. matter.

  924. You have a

  925. crucial role

  926. to play.

  927. God has

  928. put you

  929. where you

  930. are in

  931. your

  932. circumstances

  933. for you

  934. to fight,

  935. and for

  936. you to

  937. stand,

  938. and for

  939. you to

  940. play your

  941. role,

  942. because the

  943. story's not

  944. over.

  945. Let's pray.
