  1. If you've got a Bible, turn to Jeremiah.

  2. If you haven't got a Bible, you're really going to need one.

  3. And so our stewards are there.

  4. Stick up a paw, stick up a hand, and they can hand you a Bible.

  5. If you look at it on your phone, you'll probably struggle to follow it.

  6. So if you need a paper Bible, don't be embarrassed.

  7. Okay.

  8. It's Paige.

  9. What page is it?

  10. Jeremiah 2.

  11. Six to eight.

  12. Every marriage goes through difficult times.

  13. Every marriage goes through periods where you seem to be arguing all the time,

  14. or periods where you seem to be arguing more.

  15. And arguments reoccur.

  16. Maybe you're in your marriage going through that right now.

  17. In 23 years, I've only ever met one couple that told me that they never argued,

  18. and they never had argued.

  19. They were lying.

  20. And if they weren't lying, there was something really, very seriously wrong.

  21. Every marriage goes through difficult times.

  22. Jeremiah 2 to six is a conversation between a married couple.

  23. It's like a conversation between a married couple that have been arguing, fighting for years.

  24. And the conversation is not complicated.

  25. There's three, really, points to the argument.

  26. One is, it's over.

  27. Two, come back to me.

  28. And three, enough is enough.

  29. It's over.

  30. Come back to me.

  31. Enough is enough.

  32. Chapter 2, verse 1 to chapter 3, verse 5.

  33. It's over.

  34. I should imagine a husband coming into his wife and saying,

  35. there's something I need to say, and there's something I need to tell you.

  36. Her heart sinks.

  37. That's chapter 2, verses 1 to 13.

  38. The word of the Lord came to me.

  39. Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem.

  40. Thus says the Lord, I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride,

  41. how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not so.

  42. But even we know that in the story of God's marriage to Israel,

  43. when it began, all was not sweetness and light.

  44. But compared to what comes next, it was pure joy.

  45. The metaphor switches, and the people of God are described as a toxic harvest.

  46. And in a throwback to the Garden of Eden,

  47. all who ate of it incurred guilt.

  48. Disaster came upon them.

  49. God's word becomes even more plain as he addresses them in verse 5.

  50. What wrong did your fathers find in me?

  51. That they went far from me,

  52. and went after worthlessness, and became worthless.

  53. Jeremiah uses the Ecclesiastes word.

  54. Vanity of vanities.

  55. This relationship is only going one way,

  56. and he highlights their ingratitude, and their amnesia, and their stupidity.

  57. Verse 6, they did not say,

  58. where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt,

  59. who led us in the wilderness?

  60. Verse 7, and I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruit and its good things,

  61. but when you came in, you defiled my land,

  62. and made my heritage an abomination.

  63. The priests, they don't seek God.

  64. The Bible preachers don't know God.

  65. The kings defy God.

  66. The prophets don't speak for God.

  67. And according to verse 9,

  68. God has a significant problem with this.

  69. Even on a basic level,

  70. this is self-evidently wrong.

  71. Verse 10,

  72. he says,

  73. And God's conclusion is cutting.

  74. Verse 12,

  75. I think there is no more helpful or damning analysis of sin in the whole of the Bible than that verse.

  76. Sin is defying and abandoning God,

  77. and it is choosing to be our own God in his place.

  78. And the image highlights the utter foolishness of this.

  79. So imagine,

  80. and you're really thirsty,

  81. and there is a gushing spring of fresh water that is beside you.

  82. But you embark on the ultimately futile,

  83. back-breaking project of digging out your own rainwater tank.

  84. It's a rainwater tank which will never hold water,

  85. and yet you keep digging it.

  86. Can you see the utter stupidity of sin?

  87. Many of us slip into an entirely kind of unreformed,

  88. unbiblical, works-based way of living.

  89. Each day, we don't have a problem.

  90. Maybe you don't have a problem with thinking,

  91. I'm not perfect.

  92. I know that much.

  93. And we may even reflect,

  94. we give ourselves a score out of 100.

  95. That was a 90% day.

  96. Today was a shocker.

  97. I only reached 63%.

  98. The Bible does describe sin as falling short,

  99. a shortfall.

  100. And that is right,

  101. but it can actually flatter you.

  102. I would rather think of myself as doing well but falling short than an idiot.

  103. An idiot who's broken faith with God

  104. and set myself up at the heart of the universe.

  105. At the heart of sin,

  106. according to God through Jeremiah,

  107. it is cosmically stupid.

  108. And sometimes we flatter ourselves,

  109. don't we?

  110. I just fall short.

  111. But actually, no, Jeremiah says,

  112. sin is cosmically stupid.

  113. And if we live with this moment to moment,

  114. we will take our sin incredibly seriously.

  115. And when confronted with our sin,

  116. we won't minimize it.

  117. When we become aware of our sins,

  118. we won't take refuge that,

  119. well, we did well,

  120. just not well enough.

  121. We won't say,

  122. well, yeah,

  123. I fall into sin,

  124. but look at all the good I do.

  125. Because when we do that,

  126. we are not addressing the heart of the issue.

  127. We won't face the fact

  128. that we have been

  129. distinctly,

  130. catastrophically stupid.

  131. Jeremiah

  132. causes you and I

  133. to embrace the fact

  134. that we reject God

  135. and we deify ourselves.

  136. We are guilty of unbelief

  137. on the one hand

  138. and idolatry on the other hand.

  139. And we do it again

  140. and again

  141. and again.

  142. The painful conversation

  143. goes on in verse 14.

  144. Instead of seeking security

  145. in God,

  146. Israel have made alliances

  147. with all kinds of nations.

  148. They've pressed

  149. the diplomatic

  150. self-destruct button.

  151. And it's got consequences.

  152. Look at verse 15.

  153. The lions,

  154. they're metaphorical lions,

  155. the lions have roared

  156. against them.

  157. They've roared

  158. loudly.

  159. And they've come in,

  160. they've trashed your country.

  161. And they've made

  162. his land a waste,

  163. his cities in ruins

  164. without inhabitants.

  165. Moreover,

  166. the men of Memphis

  167. and Tehaphanes

  168. have shaved the crown

  169. of your head,

  170. they've humiliated you.

  171. And you've brought this

  172. upon yourself

  173. by forsaking the Lord

  174. your God

  175. when he led you in the way.

  176. And now,

  177. what do you gain

  178. by going to Egypt

  179. to drink the waters

  180. of the Nile?

  181. Or what do you gain

  182. by going to Assyria

  183. to drink the waters

  184. of the Euphrates?

  185. Your evil will chastise you.

  186. And your apostasy

  187. will reprove you.

  188. Know and see

  189. that it is evil

  190. and bitter

  191. for you to forsake

  192. the Lord your God.

  193. The fear of me

  194. is not in you.

  195. And there are

  196. very few of us

  197. that enjoy

  198. hard conversations.

  199. There are fewer

  200. still of us

  201. that enjoy

  202. our hearts

  203. being ripped open

  204. and torn

  205. into tiny pieces.

  206. But that is the kind

  207. of thing

  208. that's going on here.

  209. God lays out

  210. the reality

  211. of Israel's

  212. past and present

  213. in a way that can be

  214. neither denied

  215. or ignored.

  216. In chapter 2

  217. in verse 20

  218. to 37

  219. there's a long section

  220. and it's actually

  221. quite easy

  222. to pick your way

  223. through it.

  224. Jeremiah

  225. builds this case

  226. on seven statements

  227. that Israel makes.

  228. Verse 20

  229. For long ago

  230. I broke your yoke

  231. and burst your bonds

  232. but you said

  233. I will not serve.

  234. Yes,

  235. on every hill

  236. and under every green tree

  237. you bowed down

  238. like a whore.

  239. And God's assertion

  240. in verse 22

  241. is despite all this

  242. scrubbing

  243. the stain of your guilt

  244. is still before me.

  245. Israel speaks again

  246. and they say

  247. I'm not unclean.

  248. I haven't gone

  249. after the bales

  250. but God says

  251. in verse 24

  252. you're like a randy donkey.

  253. And their third statement

  254. in verse 25

  255. confirms

  256. that assessment.

  257. It is hopeless

  258. for I've loved foreigners

  259. and after them

  260. I will go.

  261. It's just the way I am.

  262. It's just the way I am.

  263. And the people of God

  264. continue to give themselves

  265. away by their ideology.

  266. Verse 26

  267. they're kings

  268. they're officials

  269. they're priests

  270. they're prophets

  271. who say to a tree

  272. you are my father

  273. who say to a stone

  274. you gave me birth.

  275. And in the light of that

  276. their plea to arise

  277. and save

  278. sounds well ridiculous

  279. and presumptuous.

  280. And they've repeatedly

  281. asserted their independence.

  282. The sixth statement

  283. in verse 31

  284. says

  285. we are free

  286. we will come

  287. no more to you

  288. the relationship

  289. is well

  290. and truly over.

  291. There's no repentance

  292. no self-awareness

  293. no recognition

  294. of reality

  295. and finally

  296. verse 34

  297. in spite of all these things

  298. you say

  299. I'm innocent.

  300. Surely his anger

  301. has turned

  302. from me.

  303. God says

  304. it is

  305. over.

  306. Chapter 3

  307. verse 1 to 5

  308. sums it up

  309. not only is the honeymoon

  310. over

  311. the whole marriage

  312. is over.

  313. If a man divorces

  314. his wife

  315. she goes from him

  316. and becomes

  317. another man's wife

  318. will he return to her?

  319. Would not that land

  320. be greatly polluted?

  321. Again

  322. for us

  323. that's Deuteronomy 24

  324. language.

  325. God has prohibited

  326. this kind of behavior.

  327. This language

  328. was there

  329. to protect women

  330. from becoming

  331. like a kind of

  332. marital football

  333. getting kicked around

  334. from one man

  335. to the next

  336. and Jeremiah

  337. uses this text

  338. to say

  339. it's over.

  340. You've played the

  341. whore with many lovers

  342. and would you

  343. return to me

  344. to declare to the Lord

  345. lift up your eyes

  346. to the bare heights

  347. and see

  348. where have you

  349. not been ravished

  350. by the wayside

  351. you've sat

  352. awaiting lovers

  353. like an Arab

  354. in the wilderness

  355. you've polluted

  356. the land

  357. with your vile

  358. whoredom

  359. therefore the showers

  360. have been withheld

  361. and the spring rain

  362. has not come

  363. it's the curse

  364. of the covenant.

  365. You have the

  366. forehead of a whore

  367. you refuse

  368. to be ashamed

  369. have you

  370. not just now

  371. called to me

  372. my father

  373. you are the friend

  374. of my youth

  375. will he be angry

  376. forever

  377. will he be indignant

  378. to the end

  379. behold you've spoken

  380. but you've done

  381. all the evil

  382. that you could.

  383. And at this point

  384. it's really

  385. tempting

  386. to rush

  387. to the New Testament

  388. and ease

  389. the relentless

  390. discomfort

  391. of these chapters

  392. but stop.

  393. stop and let

  394. the relentless

  395. pain of these

  396. words sink in.

  397. God's marriage

  398. has been difficult

  399. for a very long time

  400. God's marriage

  401. to Israel

  402. has been difficult

  403. for a long

  404. long time

  405. they've been fighting

  406. night after night

  407. after night

  408. there's no question

  409. who is at fault

  410. and the disbelief

  411. how can it be over?

  412. You've always

  413. forgiven me

  414. what's different

  415. about this time?

  416. Why can't we have

  417. one more chance?

  418. Another go

  419. but God says

  420. it's over

  421. and what I think

  422. is interesting

  423. and quite disconcerting

  424. is that there are

  425. places in the New Testament

  426. that pick up

  427. on this kind

  428. of language.

  429. The idea

  430. that our relationship

  431. as a church

  432. with God

  433. is a fragile marriage

  434. and so the Apostle John

  435. in Revelation

  436. applies it to the church

  437. and Jesus speaks

  438. to the church

  439. in Ephesus

  440. to the angel

  441. of the church

  442. in Ephesus

  443. and he says

  444. the words of him

  445. who holds

  446. the seven stars

  447. in his right hand

  448. who walks

  449. among the seven

  450. golden lampstands

  451. I know your works

  452. your toil

  453. your patient endurance

  454. and how you cannot

  455. bear with those

  456. who are evil

  457. I know you are

  458. endearingly patient

  459. and bearing up

  460. for my name's sake

  461. and you've not

  462. grown weary

  463. but I've got this

  464. against you

  465. that you've abandoned

  466. the love you had

  467. at first.

  468. Remember therefore

  469. from where you've

  470. fallen repent

  471. and do the works

  472. you did at first

  473. if not

  474. I will come to you

  475. and I will remove

  476. your lampstand

  477. from its place

  478. unless you repent.

  479. And we mustn't

  480. soften those words

  481. by kind of doing

  482. a theological

  483. sleight of hand

  484. about whether

  485. or not

  486. Jesus actually

  487. really means

  488. what he says

  489. and we must

  490. hear those words

  491. as a real warning

  492. against spiritual

  493. adultery

  494. but we must

  495. also recognize

  496. we are not

  497. in the same place

  498. because of

  499. the Lord Jesus

  500. Christ

  501. things have

  502. changed

  503. and we are

  504. his bride

  505. and ultimately

  506. he will not

  507. let his people

  508. go.

  509. John goes on

  510. to say in

  511. Revelation 19

  512. doesn't he

  513. says

  514. hallelujah

  515. hallelujah

  516. for the Lord

  517. our God

  518. the almighty

  519. reigns

  520. and let us

  521. rejoice

  522. and exalt

  523. and give him

  524. the glory

  525. for the marriage

  526. of the lamb

  527. has come

  528. and his bride

  529. has made

  530. herself ready

  531. it was granted

  532. to her

  533. to clothe herself

  534. with fine linen

  535. bright and pure

  536. for the fine linen

  537. is the righteous

  538. deeds of the saints

  539. and the angel

  540. said to me

  541. write this

  542. blessed are those

  543. who are invited

  544. to the marriage

  545. supper of the lamb

  546. and God

  547. will never

  548. say to us

  549. because we are

  550. in Christ

  551. it is over

  552. but the power

  553. and the strange

  554. dark beauty

  555. of Jeremiah

  556. is that it

  557. encourages us

  558. not to run

  559. there too

  560. quickly

  561. it's not exactly

  562. what we might

  563. expect at this

  564. point

  565. in the narrative

  566. but in the wake

  567. of all these

  568. passionate

  569. outbursts

  570. aimed at

  571. convincing

  572. the really

  573. complacent

  574. Judahites

  575. that the writing

  576. is on the wall

  577. and so in chapter

  578. 3 and verse

  579. 6

  580. God's prophet

  581. calls the people

  582. to repent

  583. come back to me

  584. come back to me

  585. 3 verse 6

  586. to 4 verse 4

  587. the word occurs

  588. 14 times

  589. 15 times

  590. actually

  591. in different forms

  592. return

  593. return

  594. return

  595. return

  596. return

  597. return

  598. return

  599. this drumbeat

  600. of the call

  601. to repentance

  602. is silenced

  603. only by the fact

  604. that those reading

  605. the final version

  606. of Jeremiah's

  607. work in exile

  608. would know

  609. only too well

  610. that those 15

  611. calls to repentance

  612. were ignored

  613. along with many

  614. others

  615. I don't know

  616. whether you've

  617. had this experience

  618. you are given

  619. a list

  620. to go to the shop

  621. you go to Lidl

  622. and the list

  623. isn't as clear

  624. as you would like it

  625. and so

  626. there are a number

  627. of options

  628. you could

  629. so you

  630. ring your

  631. wife

  632. but she doesn't

  633. answer

  634. and so you ring

  635. again

  636. and she doesn't

  637. answer

  638. and you ring

  639. a third time

  640. and she doesn't

  641. answer

  642. so you ring

  643. your son

  644. and he doesn't

  645. answer

  646. and then you

  647. ring your daughter

  648. and she doesn't

  649. answer

  650. and finally

  651. you ring your

  652. wife again

  653. and she does

  654. pick up the phone

  655. what do you say

  656. oh it's lovely

  657. to speak to you

  658. don't you

  659. the experience

  660. of being ignored

  661. drives me mad

  662. drives you mad

  663. time after time

  664. time after time

  665. you ring

  666. and they don't

  667. pick up the phone

  668. well God

  669. presents himself

  670. as a God

  671. who time

  672. after time

  673. after time

  674. is calling

  675. his people

  676. he calls his people

  677. again and again

  678. and again

  679. and they don't

  680. answer

  681. during

  682. Josiah's reign

  683. God

  684. gives

  685. Jeremiah

  686. an insight

  687. into this

  688. what it was

  689. like for him

  690. from his

  691. perspective

  692. and he goes

  693. back to the

  694. days of the

  695. northern kingdom

  696. to Israel

  697. and he says

  698. do you remember

  699. what happened

  700. to the northern

  701. kingdom

  702. Israel

  703. chapter 3

  704. verse 6

  705. have you seen

  706. what she did

  707. the faithless

  708. one

  709. as she went

  710. up on every

  711. hill

  712. and every

  713. under green

  714. tree

  715. she played

  716. the horn

  717. and I thought

  718. after that

  719. she'll come

  720. back

  721. but she didn't

  722. and all the

  723. while her

  724. treacherous

  725. sister

  726. you

  727. in

  728. Judah

  729. you saw

  730. it

  731. you saw

  732. the adulteries

  733. of the

  734. faithless

  735. one

  736. Israel

  737. you saw

  738. that I

  739. sent her

  740. away

  741. with a

  742. decree

  743. of divorce

  744. yet her

  745. treacherous

  746. Judah

  747. you

  748. did not

  749. fear

  750. but she

  751. too went

  752. and played

  753. the whore

  754. because she

  755. took her

  756. whoredom

  757. lightly

  758. she polluted

  759. the land

  760. committing adultery

  761. with stone

  762. and tree

  763. yet for

  764. all this

  765. her

  766. treacherous

  767. sister

  768. Judah

  769. did not

  770. return

  771. to me

  772. with her

  773. whole

  774. heart

  775. but in

  776. pretense

  777. declares

  778. the Lord

  779. do you

  780. hear that

  781. it's

  782. Josiah's

  783. day

  784. great

  785. king

  786. Josiah

  787. Judah

  788. it seems

  789. had learned

  790. nothing

  791. from

  792. the destruction

  793. of Israel

  794. chapter 3

  795. verse 11

  796. faithless

  797. Israel

  798. has shown

  799. herself

  800. more

  801. righteous

  802. than

  803. treacherous

  804. Judah

  805. you do

  806. wonder

  807. don't you

  808. what it

  809. would have

  810. been like

  811. to have

  812. Jeremiah

  813. come

  814. as a

  815. visiting

  816. preacher

  817. he doesn't

  818. pull his

  819. punches

  820. does he

  821. and this

  822. is

  823. Josiah's

  824. day

  825. not

  826. evil

  827. king

  828. Manasseh's

  829. day

  830. it's

  831. not the

  832. reign of

  833. any of

  834. the

  835. hopelessly

  836. idolatrous

  837. kings

  838. these words

  839. are spoken

  840. in the

  841. middle

  842. of

  843. good

  844. king

  845. Josiah's

  846. reform

  847. of the

  848. nation

  849. and God

  850. says

  851. you're

  852. worse

  853. than

  854. Israel

  855. he compares

  856. his

  857. people

  858. with

  859. Israel

  860. I don't

  861. know how

  862. you fight

  863. how that

  864. works

  865. in your

  866. marriage

  867. but I

  868. think

  869. comparing

  870. people

  871. unfavorably

  872. seldom

  873. gets a

  874. positive

  875. response

  876. you are

  877. just like

  878. your

  879. mother

  880. do you

  881. know who

  882. you're

  883. behaving

  884. like

  885. you're

  886. behaving

  887. like

  888. your

  889. dad

  890. I

  891. have

  892. found

  893. that

  894. doesn't

  895. diffuse

  896. the

  897. situation

  898. it

  899. doesn't

  900. tend

  901. to

  902. think

  903. of

  904. course

  905. that's

  906. exactly

  907. what I'm

  908. like

  909. thanks

  910. for

  911. pointing

  912. that

  913. out

  914. I

  915. really

  916. appreciate

  917. that

  918. that's

  919. not

  920. how

  921. I

  922. respond

  923. and so

  924. comparing

  925. Israel

  926. to

  927. Judah

  928. must have

  929. been

  930. deeply

  931. irritating

  932. but it

  933. leads to

  934. an

  935. outpouring

  936. of God's

  937. compassion

  938. go and

  939. proclaim

  940. these

  941. words

  942. towards

  943. the

  944. north

  945. and

  946. say

  947. I

  948. will

  949. not

  950. look

  951. on you

  952. in

  953. anger

  954. for I

  955. am

  956. merciful

  957. declares

  958. the

  959. Lord

  960. I

  961. will

  962. not

  963. be

  964. angry

  965. forever

  966. only

  967. acknowledge

  968. your

  969. guilt

  970. that you

  971. rebelled

  972. against the

  973. Lord

  974. your

  975. God

  976. and you

  977. scattered

  978. your

  979. favours

  980. among foreigners

  981. under every

  982. green tree

  983. that you've

  984. not obeyed

  985. my voice

  986. declares

  987. the Lord

  988. return

  989. oh

  990. faithless

  991. children

  992. declares

  993. the Lord

  994. for I

  995. am your

  996. master

  997. I will

  998. take you

  999. one from

  1000. a city

  1001. two from

  1002. a family

  1003. and I

  1004. will bring

  1005. you into

  1006. Zion

  1007. god

  1008. god

  1009. god

  1010. god

  1011. god

  1012. god

  1013. god

  1014. god

  1015. god

1016. This is new covenant country.

1017. Let the detail wash over you.

1018. Hear God saying, come back to me and I will fix everything.

1019. Verse 19, how would I set you among my sons and give you a pleasant land?

1020. A heritage, most beautiful of all nations.

1021. And I thought you would call me my father.

1022. And would not turn from following me.

  1023. That's not what happened.

1024. So he cries out again, verse 22, which is literally, turn, you turning away sons and I will heal your turnings.

1025. Come back, a day is envisaged.

1026. Behold, we come to you for you are the Lord our God, truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.

  1027. But there's no softening.

1028. Chapter 4, verse 1, he cries out again, if you return to me, if you just repent, the promise to Abraham will be fulfilled.

1029. Nations will bless themselves in him and in him they shall glory.

1030. God says in verse 3, break up your fallow ground.

  1031. And he's drawing on Deuteronomy 10.

  1032. Think about this.

1033. Why does God give us all this to go through?

1034. Couldn't Jeremiah have got to the point a bit more quickly?

1035. Couldn't Jeremiah have just said, listen, it's over.

  1036. God loves you.

1037. There's plenty of evidence of that.

  1038. But this is it.

  1039. You're toast.

  1040. You're done.

1041. Well, he could accept the extent of his material.

  1042. The heightened emotional level.

1043. The chapter after chapter after chapter of this is part of the point.

1044. All of this is here to convey to you this is what God is really like.

1045. And we need to be careful, don't we, reading these prophets.

1046. Because we can never quite grasp what God is like.

1047. John Calvin speaks about when God communicates with us, he lisps.

  1048. God lisps to us.

1049. That means he condescends to us.

  1050. God lowers himself.

  1051. He accommodates himself.

  1052. He accommodates himself.

1053. Where God actually gives us the categories to understand something of what he's like.

  1054. God is God.

1055. And though we are made in his image, we must never repay the compliment and remake God in our image.

1056. God is not exactly like us.

1057. Westminster Confession of Faith makes this clear.

  1058. It says this.

1059. There is but one only living and true God, who is infinite in being and perfection, a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts or passions, immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of his will, his own immutable and most righteous will.

  1060. And so on.

  1061. God is like us.

1062. But he's not like us.

1063. God cannot be made to suffer or to change from the outside.

1064. God cannot be overcome with passions.

1065. God does not have strong desires that cause him to sort of lose it and behave in an ungodly way.

1066. If you want the technical term, he is impassable.

1067. But God is not dispassionate.

  1068. He cares deeply.

1069. God may not have emotions in the way that we do, but God feels things in a higher, purer way.

1070. But he feels things nonetheless.

1071. To lose that is to rip the heart out of the revelation of God in the Bible.

  1072. Paul Helm, he's a theologian, he's just died.

1073. He coined the term, themotions.

  1074. I think that's quite helpful.

  1075. Themotions.

  1076. God has themotions.

1077. Like human emotions, but God's vision is higher and purer.

1078. And that's what we see on full display here.

1079. God longs for us in a way that is packed with themotion for his people.

1080. He longs for his people to return to him, to come home to him.

1081. To repent, to realign their lives to his agenda.

1082. So that his great mission to the nations might move forward.

1083. And I do wonder whether this evening we need to be confronted again with what we call the heart of God.

  1084. For his people.

1085. Our God is the God who in the human nature of Jesus Christ, freely, willingly, sovereignly,

  1086. endued suffering.

1087. Actively taking it to himself.

1088. That ours might be put to an end.

1089. And there is nothing other than the beautifully gratuitous outpouring of his invincible, unsurpassable,

1090. endearing love for his creatures like you and I.

1091. It's the foundation of grace itself.

1092. This is how God is.

1093. Our God is the God who says to people like us in Christ,

1094. come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

1095. My yoke is easy, my burden is light.

1096. And yet our God is also the God who says enough is enough.

1097. And so from chapter 4, verse 5, to chapter 6, verse 30, he brings this section to a close.

1098. And God tells his people in no uncertain terms that even though life seems to be fine and rosy,

  1099. judgment is coming.

1100. Chapter 4, blow the trumpet through the land.

1101. Cry aloud and say assemble and let us go into the fortified cities.

1102. Let's run and hide, raise a standard towards Zion.

1103. Flee for safety, stay not, for I bring disaster from the north and great destruction.

1104. And remember, Jeremiah is saying this when things are going well,

1105. and they are prosperous, stable, and safe.

1106. But then there's Jeremiah, the harbinger of doom.

  1107. The end is near.

1108. And he does it over and over and over again.

  1109. Disaster is coming.

1110. He keeps saying the Babylonians are not only knocking on the door today,

1111. well, they will be, they'll be through the door tomorrow.

1112. If you just glance with me, let me show you this.

1113. Chapter 4, verse 11, God is coming with swift chariots and horses in the form of a Babylonian army.

1114. Chapter 4, verse 23, and following, the earth is about to be uncreated,

1115. and the nation as a whole is going to be trashed.

1116. By chapter 5, verse 10 and 11, the vineyards are going.

1117. The whole nation is being eaten up in chapter 5, verse 15 to 17.

1118. Chapter 6, verse 1 to 5, a siege is about to be led.

1119. There's the sound of marching boots, can you hear them?

  1120. And clashing swords.

1121. Chapter 6, verse 21 can be heard even now.

1122. Jeremiah joins excerpts of his preaching over the years.

1123. I don't think he did this in one hit, but he draws together his greatest hits,

1124. and he draws them together to frightening effect.

1125. Chapter 6, verse 23, terror on every side.

  1126. That's his nickname.

  1127. And what effect?

  1128. Nothing.

1129. God's people are so complacent.

1130. Chapter 5, verse 12, they've spoken falsely of the Lord,

1131. and have said, he will do nothing.

1132. No disaster will come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine.

1133. The prophet will become wind.

1134. The word is not in them.

1135. Thus shall it be done to them.

  1136. It'll happen.

  1137. Chapter 5, verse 30.

1138. An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land.

  1139. The prophets prophesy falsely.

1140. The priests rule at their direction.

1141. My people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

  1142. Chapter 6, verse 13.

1143. For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain.

1144. And from prophet to prophet, everyone deals falsely.

1145. They've healed the wound by people lightly, saying, peace, peace, when there is no peace.

1146. But all will be overthrown.

1147. And what does Jeremiah have to do?

1148. Well, he patiently explains why all this has happened.

1149. And he piles up the reasons.

  1150. 4.18.

1151. Your words and your deeds have brought this upon you.

  1152. 4.22.

1153. For my people are foolish.

  1154. They know me not.

  1155. They are stupid children.

  1156. They have no understanding.

1157. They are wise in doing evil.

  1158. 5.3.

1159. They refuse to take correction.

1160. They've made their faces harder than rock.

  1161. They've refused to repent.

  1162. Verse 5.

  1163. They've broken the yoke.

  1164. Verse 6.

  1165. Their transgressions are many.

  1166. Verse 7.

1167. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores.

  1168. Verse 8.

  1169. They were well fed.

  1170. Lusty stallions.

1171. Neighing for their neighbors' wives.

  1172. Verse 11.

  1173. The house of Israel.

1174. The house of Judah has been utterly treacherous.

  1175. Verse 23.

1176. These people are of a stubborn and rebellious heart.

  1177. Verse 28.

1178. They've grown fat and sleek.

1179. They know no bounds of evil.

  1180. Verse 30.

1181. An appalling and horrible thing has happened.

1182. And so it goes on and on.

  1183. Chapter 6.

  1184. Verse 6.

  1185. Cut down the trees.

1186. Cast up a siege mound against Jerusalem.

1187. This is the city that must be punished.

1188. There's nothing but oppression within her.

  1189. Verse 10.

1190. To whom shall I speak and give warning that they may hear?

1191. Behold, their ears are uncircumcised.

  1192. They cannot listen.

1193. And so I hope you feel the relentlessness of these chapters.

1194. Jeremiah wants you to feel like we were there.

1195. Day after day after day after day.

1196. As he announces, God has said enough is enough.

1197. You see, these chapters do not so much explain sin to us,

1198. but they batter us with a sense of seriousness.

  1199. With unceasing, unflinching persistence.

1200. Do you feel assaulted by these chapters?

1201. Drained by listening to them?

1202. Do you want it to stop so that you can go to tea and coffee?

  1203. Amen.

1204. If you feel like that, good.

  1205. Because you're getting it.

  1206. They are overwhelming chapters.

1207. And they are designed to be overwhelming chapters.

1208. And they are designed to bring Judah to its senses.

  1209. But amidst the warnings,

  1210. the declarations of judgment,

1211. and amidst the pleas and the pain,

  1212. there's this scarcely perceptible

1213. but persistent note which beeps away in the background.

1214. I don't know whether you've ever had the experience

1215. of having an alarm clock go off in your suitcase.

1216. Do you know that feeling?

1217. And you can hear the beep,

  1218. but it's imperceptible,

1219. and you can't hear it,

1220. and you don't know where it is.

  1221. But it's going off, isn't it?

1222. You open your suitcase, and there it is.

  1223. You turn it off.

1224. And throughout this little passage,

  1225. these passages,

1226. and there's this scarcely perceptible

  1227. but persistent note

1228. that keeps beeping away in the background.

1229. Sometimes you hear it, sometimes you don't.

  1230. You don't know what you're hearing.

1231. Are you hearing it in chapter 4, verse 27?

  1232. Can you see that?

1233. The whole land shall be a desolation.

1234. Yet I will not make a full end.

1235. And if you listen carefully,

1236. you can hear it in chapter 5, verse 10,

1237. go up through her vine roads and destroy,

1238. but make not a full end.

  1239. And chapter 5, verse 18,

1240. but even in those days declares the Lord,

1241. I will not make a full end of you.

1242. This is not the end of the story.

1243. A day is coming when God will say,

1244. will not say it is over,

  1245. and enough is enough,

1246. but God himself will say,

  1247. it is finished.

1248. When Babylon herself is fallen and judged for her sin,

1249. when there is no longer terror on every side,

  1250. when saying,

  1251. peace, peace,

  1252. is not wishful thinking,

  1253. but reality.

1254. When because of what God has done for us

1255. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

1256. in his life and death and resurrection,

  1257. we face not judgment,

  1258. but salvation uninterrupted,

  1259. uninterrupted,

1260. and ending life with God himself,

1261. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

1262. Do you remember how John finishes

  1263. the book of Revelation,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1264. chapter 21?

1265. And I saw the holy city,

  1266. the new Jerusalem,

1267. coming down out of heaven from God,

1268. prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

1269. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

1270. Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

1271. He will dwell with them,

1272. and they will be his people.

1273. And God himself will be with them as their God.

1274. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,

1275. and death shall be no more.

1276. Neither shall there be mourning,

  1277. nor crying,

  1278. nor pain anymore,

1279. for the former things have passed away.

1280. And that is the hope that the prophet

1281. and preacher Jeremiah will hold out to his people.

1282. But first, they and we must take seriously

1283. the awesome reality of their God,

  1284. who is their rescuer,

1285. but is also their judge.

  1286. Let's pray.
