  1. We're in Jeremiah chapter 16, and we're going to get to chapter 20, I hope, by the end of the sermon.

    Jeremiah 16 chapter mention

  2. Next week, your homework is 21 to 25. I'm hoping there's five more sermons in Jeremiah, but we will see.

  3. Jeremiah chapter 16. If you need a Bible, you will need a Bible tonight. They're just by the door, or one of the stewards will bring them to you.

    Jeremiah 16 chapter mention

  4. The Lord of the Rings. I've read the books. I've only read them once.

  5. But I've seen the movies multiple times. We try to watch them once a year.

  6. But I was told this week of a family who watched the extended versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit back-to-back, and no stops at all.

  7. 20 hours and 14 minutes. 1,214 minutes. It's too much, isn't it? Just too much, even if you like Lord of the Rings.

  8. If you don't, it's certainly far too much.

  9. It's too much. And I think that's got similarities with Jeremiah 1 to 20.

  10. I don't think there's any sustained stretch of the Bible quite like these chapters, which has been occupying us the last five weeks.

  11. The highly charged emotions, the relentless intensity, the looming reality of terrible judgment, the raw angst of the prophet.

  12. I don't know how you found it. I found it just a little bit too much.

  13. God assaults our emotions and our assumptions through Jeremiah.

  14. Through this prophet, God speaks into the messy world of Judah as they stare down the barrel of a Babylonian exile.

  15. And he tells his spokesman that it's his job to announce to the people who will not listen that it's over.

  16. It's over.

  17. And they're to come back to him, and enough is enough.

  18. And we've watched Jeremiah pouring himself into trying to convince God's people that their religion was killing them.

  19. And he calls them back to the God who can give them life.

  20. He confronts their spiritual hypocrisy and their deafness.

  21. And as he does all this, Jeremiah exposes to us the heart of God.

  22. And he reveals to us what does it mean to serve God, authentic ministry.

  23. And we've seen in Jeremiah something of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  24. The wounded prophet speaks God's word, suffers the pain, does whatever it takes to get the words across,

  25. who sticks to the task, even when it means being broken, and it's almost too much.

  26. These words are an overdose of confronting urgent reality.

  27. And now in chapters 16 to 20, this great wave of intensity reaches its climax.

  28. And we're confronted with not just the shape of what gospel, ministry, church life looks like,

  29. but with the cost of it.

  30. The cost of it.

  31. And I want to walk you through these towering chapters in four steps,

  32. which highlight the cost of serving God our King.

  33. I won't cover every detail, but I want you to get the basic texture of these chapters.

  34. To feel the weight of them.

  35. As again, Jeremiah invites us to listen in as God speaks to him,

  36. and urges and demands that he speak the truth,

  37. and that he embody the truth to his people, and how that will cost him.

  38. And I'm not sure there is anywhere else in the Bible that matches the intensity,

  39. intensity, and the cost of ministry that comes into sharp focus.

  40. We need to feel, and to see, and to grasp.

  41. Now, you know that you are not Jeremiah, and the cost is not identical.

  42. I think we can safely say that none of us will have quite so an important role in salvation history

  43. as the prophet Jeremiah.

  44. But don't forget that there is this basic continuity from the prophets to Jesus.

  45. It is Jesus who pays the ultimate cost.

  46. But that cost is anticipated and sketched out for us ahead of time

  47. by those like Jeremiah who served God faithfully before him.

  48. And then Jesus calls you and I as his people to face up to the real but restricted cost that we have to pay.

  49. There is a connection between the cost that Jeremiah paid before Jesus comes

  50. and the cost that Jesus expects you and I to bear as we follow him on this side of the cross.

  51. So the ministry of Jeremiah in the 8th century BC shows us something of what we can expect.

  52. So first in chapter 16, verse 1 to 21, can you see the cost of being committed?

  53. Flashbacks, flick back to chapter 16, verse 1.

  54. The cost of being committed.

  55. The word of the Lord came to me,

  56. You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.

  57. We don't know if Jeremiah was ever married,

  58. but one thing is clear, there wasn't to be a wife or children for the prophet this side of the exile.

  59. Being committed for Jeremiah meant a real relational cost.

  60. Knowing and speaking the truth meant for Jeremiah that he couldn't just pretend life was going to continue as normal.

  61. He knew that in the words of verses 3 to 5,

  62. that the children of Judah would die of deadly diseases.

  63. And they wouldn't be lamented or buried.

  64. They would lie as dung on the surface of the ground, perishing by the sword or famine.

  65. There'll be food for the birds of the air.

  66. And the sign for that dreadful reality God told Jeremiah was,

  67. Don't get married.

  68. Then in chapter 16, verse 5,

  69. Not only was it a case of no marriage, no sex for the prophet,

  70. but also no sympathy to be shown to the people.

  71. In particular, he wasn't to go to any funerals.

  72. For thus says the Lord God,

  73. Do not enter the house of mourning, or go to lament or grieve for them,

  74. for I have taken away my peace from this people.

  75. My steadfast love and mercy declares the Lord.

  76. Now, you might not be a fan of funerals,

  77. but think of this for a second.

  78. It's not just a prohibition on going to church services.

  79. God is telling the prophet that he cannot have normal human relationships.

  80. Both great and small shall die in the land.

  81. They shall not be buried.

  82. No one shall lament them, or cut himself, or make himself bald for them.

  83. No one shall break bread for the mourner to comfort him for the dead.

  84. Nor shall anyone give him the cup of consolation.

  85. And God is not finished yet.

  86. The ban extends to parties and wedding receptions.

  87. You shall not go, verse 8, into the house of feasting,

  88. to sit with them, to eat and drink.

  89. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

  90. Behold, I will silence in this place,

  91. before your eyes and in your days.

  92. The voice of mirth, the voice of gladness,

  93. the voice of the bridegroom, the voice of the bride, silence.

  94. And when the prophet says, why all of this?

  95. What is our iniquity?

  96. What is the sin we've committed?

  97. Jeremiah the party pooper has to pronounce,

  98. because your fathers have forsaken me, declares the Lord.

  99. And they've gone after other gods.

  100. They've saved and worshipped them.

  101. And have forsaken me, and have not kept my law.

  102. Verse 12, and because you've done worse than your fathers,

  103. for behold, every one of you follows your stubborn, evil will,

  104. refusing to listen to me.

  105. Therefore, I will hurl you out of this land.

  106. These are the harsh words that Jeremiah has to announce

  107. to his next-door neighbour, to his community,

  108. his schoolmates, his extended family.

  109. And his life is to match the dark message.

  110. For this is the cost of being committed.

  111. And it's always been like this.

  112. The relationship, the intimacy that the prophet has with God

  113. does come at a cost.

  114. The grace that God pours out in drawing us into his family,

  115. and joining us to Christ, and then sending us out into the world,

  116. always comes with a cost.

  117. For Jeremiah, his ministry specifically affected his marriage,

  118. his future, his social life, even his happiness.

  119. There was a real cost.

  120. And you might be sitting there tonight and thinking,

  121. well, the cost actually is relatively low.

  122. And we live and breathe in an environment

  123. which is pretty unusual in the history of the church.

  124. It has been for the last 200 years, really.

  125. But the cost of being committed to Christ

  126. will at some point go through the roof.

  127. None of us has any idea

  128. what the Lord has in store for us in the years ahead.

  129. But if you are committed to the Lord Jesus,

  130. there will be a cost.

  131. And don't take that from me.

  132. Take it from Jesus himself.

  133. Luke 14, if anyone comes to me

  134. and doesn't hate his own father and mother,

  135. wife and children, brother and sisters,

  136. and even his own life,

  137. he cannot be my disciple.

  138. Whoever does not bear his own cross

  139. and come after me cannot be my disciple.

  140. For which of you desiring to build a temple

  141. does not first sit down and count the cost,

  142. whether he's enough to complete it.

  143. Otherwise, when he's laid a foundation

  144. and he's not able to finish it,

  145. all who see it will mock

  146. and say this man began to build

  147. and he wasn't able to finish.

  148. Or what king going out to encounter another king

  149. in a war will not sit down first

  150. and count the cost of war?

  151. So therefore, any of you

  152. who does not renounce all that he has

  153. cannot be my disciple, Jesus Christ.

  154. Being committed to the Lord Jesus

  155. complicates your relationships.

  156. It introduces tensions with parents, siblings.

  157. It can make life with your spouse more painful.

  158. In some cases, it can narrow down

  159. your marriage options to virtually nil.

  160. Following Jesus complicates family life,

  161. upping the demands on us as fathers

  162. and husbands and wives and mothers

  163. and brothers and sisters.

  164. Being committed to Christ

  165. will drastically affect your finances,

  166. your career path, and your ego.

  167. Being committed to Jesus

  168. may well cost you your life.

  169. So why put up with this?

  170. Why is this a cost worth paying?

  171. And it's a slightly surprising answer

  172. that God gives to Jeremiah,

  173. a compelling answer to that question

  174. in the middle of all his own tension.

  175. Why should he put up with this?

  176. We'll look at chapter 16, verses 14 and 15.

  177. And therefore, behold,

  178. the days are coming, declares the Lord,

  179. when it shall no longer be said,

  180. as the Lord lives,

  181. who brought up the people of Israel

  182. out of the land of Egypt,

  183. but as the Lord lives,

  184. who brought up the people of Israel

  185. out of the north country

  186. and out of the countries

  187. where you've driven them,

  188. for I will bring them back

  189. to their own land,

  190. and I will give to them,

  191. give to their fathers,

  192. that I give to their fathers.

  193. God says to Jeremiah,

  194. remember the pain now

  195. is the precursor to the joy

  196. that will eventually follow.

  197. Yes, there is judgment now,

  198. but there will be dramatic salvation to come,

  199. which leads Jeremiah to cry out,

  200. verse 19,

  201. O Lord, my strength, my stronghold,

  202. my refuge in the day of trouble.

  203. To you shall the nations come

  204. from the ends of the earth

  205. and say,

  206. our fathers have inherited nothing but lies,

  207. worthless things in which there is no profit.

  208. Can man make for himself gods?

  209. Such are not gods.

  210. Therefore, behold,

  211. I will make them know this once.

  212. I will make them know my power on my mouth,

  213. and they shall know,

  214. the nation shall know,

  215. that my name is the Lord.

  216. A day is coming

  217. when the Lord will be recognized

  218. and acknowledged and worshipped

  219. by people from all nations.

  220. And that is why Jeremiah

  221. can put up with the sacrifices,

  222. the abuse,

  223. the pain,

  224. the angst.

  225. It's all worth it

  226. because of what God will do.

  227. Or to sharpen it slightly,

  228. for us,

  229. it's actually worth it

  230. because of Jesus.

  231. And we can easily lose sight

  232. that we belong to Jesus Christ.

  233. And we've been rescued by Jesus Christ.

  234. And we are united by faith

  235. to Jesus Christ.

  236. And we will worship Jesus Christ

  237. around his throne forever.

  238. And sometimes I think

  239. you wouldn't actually know

  240. that we love Jesus Christ.

  241. It is Jesus himself

  242. who makes it worthwhile

  243. following him.

  244. It is Jesus who calls us

  245. to take on his yoke.

  246. It's ultimately about Jesus.

  247. And I wonder if it could be tonight

  248. that you've lost sight of that

  249. and lost sight of him.

  250. And if we've lost sight of him,

  251. then we'll think

  252. the cost is not worth paying.

  253. Unless our gaze

  254. is fixed on Jesus'

  255. beginning and end,

  256. then sooner or later

  257. it will all just seem too much.

  258. It is Jesus

  259. who makes the cost

  260. of being committed

  261. more than worth it.

  262. Secondly,

  263. as is the cost

  264. of embracing the message.

  265. In the next section

  266. of chapter 17,

  267. 1 to 18,

  268. the focus is on this

  269. fused words

  270. of God and Jeremiah.

  271. Because remember in Jeremiah

  272. you flip back

  273. and fall

  274. between Jeremiah's words

  275. and God's word

  276. almost without distinction.

  277. It's hard to work out

  278. which is which sometimes.

  279. The focus shifts

  280. from what Jeremiah

  281. must give up

  282. and put up with

  283. to what Jeremiah

  284. actually needs to embrace

  285. at the deepest level

  286. of his personality.

  287. And it all revolves

  288. around the nature

  289. of the human heart.

  290. The chapter begins

  291. with an expose

  292. of the sins of Judah.

  293. The sin of Judah

  294. is written

  295. with a pen of iron,

  296. with a point of a diamond.

  297. It's engraved

  298. on the tablet

  299. of their heart.

  300. And their sin

  301. spills out

  302. from there

  303. in a whole manner of ways.

  304. But it starts

  305. with a heart problem.

  306. And in that,

  307. Judah is typical

  308. of all of us.

  309. That's made clear

  310. in verses 5 to 7,

  311. isn't it?

  312. What do 5 and 7

  313. remind you?

  314. It's Psalm 1 language.

  315. Cursed is the man

  316. who trusts in man

  317. who makes flesh his strength

  318. whose heart turns away

  319. from the Lord.

  320. Verse 7,

  321. Blessed is the man

  322. who trusts in the Lord,

  323. whose trust is in the Lord.

  324. He's like a tree

  325. planted by water

  326. that sends out its root

  327. by the stream

  328. and so on.

  329. So the covenant-keeping

  330. man is blessed.

  331. The covenant-breaking

  332. man is cursed.

  333. The problem is,

  334. of course,

  335. and this is the lesson

  336. Judah should have learned

  337. from Israel

  338. and we should have learned

  339. from Judah

  340. is that we are all

  341. the covenant-breaking man.

  342. And it's because

  343. of our hardness

  344. of heart.

  345. In the Bible,

  346. the heart

  347. is the control center

  348. of our personality.

  349. The heart is where we think.

  350. The heart is where we decide.

  351. And it makes

  352. chapter 17,

  353. verse 9,

  354. all the more confronting

  355. and damning.

  356. Can you read it with me?

  357. Look at this.

  358. The heart is deceitful

  359. above all things

  360. and desperately sick.

  361. Who can understand it?

  362. And that is the message

  363. that Jeremiah

  364. and we are called to embrace.

  365. Because God searches

  366. our hearts,

  367. verse 10 to 13,

  368. and he will judge us.

  369. Yet there is hope

  370. for those who don't

  371. forsake God.

  372. But like Israel,

  373. like Judah,

  374. we surely,

  375. even though we know

  376. he's the fountain

  377. of living water,

  378. we turn away.

  379. Why?

  380. Because the heart

  381. is deceitful

  382. above all things

  383. and desperately sick.

  384. And who can understand it?

  385. There is no more difficult,

  386. no more painful,

  387. no more costly truth

  388. to embrace from this.

  389. But embrace it,

  390. we must.

  391. You may have not

  392. thought about it

  393. in this way.

  394. But embracing

  395. Jeremiah 17,

    Jeremiah 17:9

  396. verse 9,

  397. may well be

  398. the hardest thing

  399. that you ever have to do.

  400. We are hardwired,

  401. aren't we,

  402. to think well of ourselves.

  403. And we instinctively

  404. excuse ourselves.

  405. Without a moment's hesitation,

  406. we are all able

  407. to explain how

  408. circumstances have conspired

  409. to make us behave badly.

  410. How our actions

  411. look so much worse

  412. than they actually are.

  413. If only you knew

  414. what was going on

  415. in my heart,

  416. you wouldn't see

  417. that it's that bad.

  418. You would see

  419. that I'm much nicer

  420. than you currently think.

  421. But for the sake

  422. of our long-term

  423. spiritual health,

  424. there's nothing

  425. more vital or urgent,

  426. no more painful,

  427. no more ultimately

  428. more freeing

  429. than this truth.

  430. What does it look like

  431. if we embrace this truth?

  432. Well, perhaps,

  433. speaking about

  434. what it looks like

  435. if we haven't

  436. embraced this truth

  437. is easier.

  438. We wander through life

  439. in this kind of haze

  440. of self-congratulation

  441. and self-justification.

  442. We give ourselves

  443. license to act

  444. as if we're nicer

  445. than we really are.

  446. Do you talk too much

  447. about yourself?

  448. Or do you ask questions?

  449. Do you constantly

  450. talk yourself up

  451. and others down?

  452. Do you assume

  453. that you know best?

  454. Instinctively,

  455. do you know,

  456. do you seek

  457. the wisdom of others?

  458. They're hard questions,

  459. aren't they?

  460. Do you resist facing

  461. and owning

  462. your own sins

  463. and instead point out

  464. the sins of others?

  465. Or will you

  466. deliberately

  467. and courageously

  468. face and own

  469. your sin

  470. and seek

  471. to encourage others

  472. to find great

  473. as they do the same?

  474. That's the basic

  475. choice we face.

  476. Whether or not

  477. to face the reality

  478. of our sinfulness

  479. and the truth

  480. of Jeremiah 17,

    Jeremiah 17:9

  481. verse 9.

  482. No decision,

  483. no doctrine,

  484. no admission

  485. matters more

  486. in real time

  487. than the real world

  488. for the future

  489. of your life

  490. with Christ

  491. than this.

  492. Killing off

  493. self-love

  494. will allow

  495. the Holy Spirit

  496. to take this truth

  497. and plant it deep

  498. in us

  499. so that it explodes

  500. at the nerve center

  501. of our spiritual self.

  502. The death

  503. of our pride,

  504. that's no small thing.

  505. And this,

  506. I suggest,

  507. is the reason

  508. why Jeremiah cries out

  509. in chapter 17,

  510. verse 14.

  511. Look what he says.

  512. He says,

  513. Heal me, O Lord,

  514. and I shall be healed.

  515. Save me,

  516. and I shall be saved.

  517. For you, my praise.

  518. It's hard to embrace

  519. this message.

  520. The cost of embracing

  521. and speaking

  522. the truth about sin,

  523. verse 15.

  524. Behold,

  525. they say to me,

  526. where is the word

  527. of the Lord?

  528. Bring it on,

  529. let it come.

  530. I've not run away

  531. from being a shepherd,

  532. nor have I desired

  533. the day of sickness.

  534. You know what came

  535. out of my lips.

  536. It was before your face.

  537. I spoke about all this,

  538. and they attacked me.

  539. It's so hard,

  540. Jeremiah says.

  541. Be not a tarry to me.

  542. You are my refuge

  543. in the day of disaster.

  544. Let those be put to shame

  545. who persecute me.

  546. Let me not be put to shame.

  547. Let them be dismayed,

  548. but let me not be dismayed.

  549. Bring upon them

  550. the day of disaster.

  551. Destroy them

  552. with double destruction.

  553. For Jeremiah,

  554. the only relief

  555. and the only vindication

  556. in the face of his enemies

  557. is the coming judgment.

  558. For you and I,

  559. it is a bit different.

  560. For us,

  561. the cost of embracing

  562. this message

  563. is instantly met

  564. with the tender

  565. forgiveness of Jesus,

  566. running to Christ

  567. in repentance

  568. and faith

  569. in the light

  570. of this brings.

  571. James sums it up,

  572. doesn't he?

  573. James says,

  574. and God opposes the proud.

  575. He wants nothing to do with them,

  576. but he gives grace

  577. to the humble.

  578. He can't keep away from them.

  579. Submit yourselves,

  580. therefore,

  581. to God.

  582. Resist the devil,

  583. and he will flee from you.

  584. Draw near to God,

  585. and he will draw near to you.

  586. Cleanse your hearts,

  587. you sinners.

  588. Purify your hearts,

  589. you double-minded.

  590. Be wretched.

  591. Mourn,

  592. weep.

  593. Take Jeremiah 17,

    Jeremiah 17:9

  594. verse 9,

  595. to heart.

  596. Let your laughter

  597. be turned to mourning,

  598. and your joy to gloom.

  599. Humble yourselves

  600. before the Lord,

  601. and he will exalt you.

  602. It's the sweet,

  603. sweet cost

  604. of embracing

  605. the message

  606. of the gospel,

  607. and finding relief

  608. in Jesus Christ himself.

  609. The third aspect

  610. of the cost

  611. is in verses 19 and 27,

  612. and you see the cost

  613. of calling for a response.

  614. Jeremiah switches

  615. back to prose

  616. and records

  617. how he urges

  618. God's people

  619. to respond specifically

  620. to his teaching,

  621. and he calls

  622. for a very particular response.

  623. You pick up the thread

  624. in 17,

  625. in 17,

  626. verse 19.

  627. Thus said the Lord to me,

  628. go and stand

  629. in the people's gate

  630. by which the kings of Judah

  631. enter,

  632. and by which they go out,

  633. and in all the gates

  634. of Jerusalem,

  635. and say,

  636. hear the word of the Lord,

  637. you kings of Judah,

  638. and all Judah,

  639. and all the inhabitants

  640. of Jerusalem

  641. who enter by these gates.

  642. Thus says the Lord,

  643. take care for the sake

  644. of your lives,

  645. and do not bear a burden

  646. on the Sabbath day,

  647. or bring it in

  648. by the gates of Jerusalem.

  649. Keep the Sabbath day holy,

  650. as I commanded your fathers.

  651. Yet they did not listen

  652. or incline their ear,

  653. but stiffened their neck

  654. that they might not hear

  655. and receive instruction.

  656. It's classic Deuteronomy.

  657. He says,

  658. you'll be blessed

  659. if you obey,

  660. you'll be cursed

  661. if you disobey.

  662. If you obey,

  663. there will be

  664. Davidic kings

  665. ruling in Jerusalem,

  666. and everyone will be happy.

  667. If you disobey,

  668. you'll go into exile.

  669. In all likelihood,

  670. this is one of his

  671. earliest sermons,

  672. where there's still

  673. some hope

  674. that people might listen.

  675. And what happens,

  676. what's the response

  677. to this sermon

  678. by this great preacher?

  679. We'll look at the end

  680. of chapter 17,

  681. and you'll see nothing.

  682. Absolutely nothing.

  683. And Jeremiah

  684. preaches his heart out.

  685. He preaches his heart out,

  686. knowing something

  687. that we never will,

  688. knowing that every syllable

  689. that comes out of his mouth

  690. has come from God himself.

  691. It's truly an inspired sermon,

  692. and the result is nothing.

  693. God's people don't

  694. pay any attention at all.

  695. They keep careering

  696. to the curse of exile.

  697. And how hard

  698. that must have been.

  699. I don't know

  700. if you realize

  701. this,

  702. but there is,

  703. isn't there,

  704. an emotional cost

  705. to calling people

  706. to respond.

  707. Every time you urge

  708. people to repent

  709. and believe,

  710. every time you lay

  711. before them

  712. the stunning beauty

  713. of our God and King,

  714. and you invite them

  715. to gasp in amazement,

  716. every time you seek

  717. to persuade people

  718. to bring every part

  719. of their lives

  720. under the lordship of Jesus,

  721. whether it's parenting,

  722. whether it's

  723. talking about

  724. your children's

  725. social media activity,

  726. whether it's

  727. talking about giving,

  728. whether it's

  729. talking about our priorities

  730. in life,

  731. every time you proclaim

  732. God's word

  733. in whatever context,

  734. and you call for response,

  735. you're laying yourself

  736. wide open.

  737. What are you laying

  738. yourself wide open to?

  739. Discouragement,

  740. disappointment,

  741. self-doubt,

  742. self-recrimination.

  743. There is a cost

  744. to calling people

  745. to respond.

  746. And nowhere,

  747. I think,

  748. in the Bible

  749. is that clearer

  750. than in the life

  751. and ministry of Jeremiah.

  752. It's not just sharing

  753. what you've learnt.

  754. There's this horrific phrase

  755. in,

  756. oh,

  757. I go to preach places,

  758. and they say,

  759. well,

  760. now Paul will come

  761. and explain the Bible

  762. as if I'm some kind

  763. of English teacher.

  764. That's not what

  765. preaching is at all.

  766. It's much,

  767. much more than that.

  768. It's not just sharing

  769. what you've learnt,

  770. but persuading others

  771. to take hold of the truth.

  772. As God takes hold

  773. of our hearts,

  774. so we long,

  775. don't we,

  776. for others to respond

  777. in the same way too.

  778. And that's what it means

  779. to follow Christ,

  780. to speak the words of Christ,

  781. to weep the tears of Christ,

  782. to suffer the pain of Christ

  783. in the strength

  784. that he supplies.

  785. And then in chapters 18 to 20,

  786. there's the cost

  787. of saying the hard thing.

  788. The final cost.

  789. In a way,

  790. the cost of saying hard things,

  791. but that's what he does.

  792. And it reaches a real climax

  793. in this long section.

  794. Jeremiah has to arise.

  795. He goes to the potter's house

  796. in chapter 18,

  797. verse 2,

  798. where the potter

  799. is having another go

  800. at his first messed up pot.

  801. Oh,

  802. house of Israel,

  803. can I not do with you

  804. as this potter

  805. has done?

  806. God could smash them,

  807. or he could remake them.

  808. It's over to them.

  809. Verse 11.

  810. Now therefore,

  811. say to the men of Judah

  812. and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  813. thus says the Lord,

  814. behold,

  815. I'm shaping disaster

  816. against you

  817. and devising a plan

  818. against you.

  819. Return everyone

  820. from his evil way.

  821. Amend your ways

  822. and your deeds.

  823. And unfortunately,

  824. God already knows

  825. what their response

  826. is going to be.

  827. Verse 12.

  828. But they say,

  829. this is in vain.

  830. We'll follow our own

  831. but it's announcing

  832. judgment to God's people.

  833. And he does it again.

  834. Well,

  835. what happens to him?

  836. Shock,

  837. horror.

  838. Verse 18,

  839. they attack him.

  840. Come,

  841. let's make plots

  842. against Jeremiah.

  843. For the Lord

  844. shall not perish

  845. from the priest,

  846. nor counsel

  847. from the wise,

  848. nor the word

  849. from the prophet.

  850. We're not going

  851. to give up

  852. everything that everyone

  853. is saying

  854. to believe,

  855. Jeremiah.

  856. Let's strike him

  857. with the tongue.

  858. Let's not pay attention

  859. to any of his words.

  860. Verse 19,

  861. Jeremiah cries out,

  862. hear me,

  863. O Lord,

  864. and listen to the voice

  865. of my adversaries.

  866. Should good be repaid

  867. with evil,

  868. yet they dug a pit

  869. for my life.

  870. Remember how I stood

  871. before you.

  872. Therefore,

  873. deliver up their children

  874. of famine.

  875. Give them over

  876. to the powers

  877. of the sword.

  878. Let their wives

  879. become childless

  880. and widowed.

  881. May their men

  882. meet death

  883. by pestilence.

  884. Their youths

  885. be struck down

  886. by the sword

  887. in battle.

  888. May a cry

  889. be heard

  890. from their houses

  891. when you bring

  892. the plunderer

  893. suddenly upon them.

  894. For they've dug

  895. a pit

  896. to take means.

  897. So on.

  898. Don't forgive them.

  899. Do not blot

  900. out their sin.

  901. Let them be

  902. overthrown before you.

  903. Deal with them

  904. in the time

  905. of your anger,

  906. Lord.

  907. Now I think

  908. on balance,

  909. it's fair to say

  910. this isn't

  911. Jeremiah's finest hour.

  912. But we need

  913. to hold on

  914. to two things.

  915. The first is

  916. that Jeremiah's

  917. enemies

  918. are really

  919. God's enemies.

  920. That he has

  921. brought a direct

  922. word from God

  923. and they've

  924. attacked him.

  925. And that in itself

  926. heightens it

  927. above any situation

  928. that you are

  929. I'll face.

  930. Secondly,

  931. his words are

  932. recorded in part

  933. of the least

  934. to show you

  935. the real cost

  936. of saying

  937. hard things

  938. when they're

  939. obviously true.

  940. Same patterns

  941. repeated in chapter

  942. 19.

  943. God tells

  944. Jeremiah

  945. to go and

  946. take some

  947. pottery

  948. and gather

  949. the elders

  950. and priests

  951. and go to

  952. the interestingly

  953. named pottery

  954. fragment gate.

  955. I wonder

  956. what's going

  957. to happen

  958. there.

  959. Chapter 19

  960. verses 3

  961. to 9

  962. brings another

  963. horrific message.

  964. Chapter 10

  965. says,

  966. well then you

  967. shall break

  968. the flask

  969. in the sight

  970. of the men

  971. who go with you

  972. and you shall

  973. say to them,

  974. thus says the

  975. Lord of hosts,

  976. so will I

  977. break this people

  978. in the city

  979. as one breaks

  980. a potter's

  981. vessel.

  982. And then just

  983. for good measure

  984. verse 15,

  985. thus says the

  986. Lord of hosts,

  987. the God of Israel,

  988. behold I'm

  989. bringing upon the

  990. city and upon

  991. all its town

  992. all the disaster

  993. that I've

  994. pronounced against

  995. it,

  996. because they've

  997. stiffened their

  998. neck refusing

  999. to hear my

  1000. words.

  1001. Jeremiah,

  1002. like no other

  1003. man in the

  1004. Bible,

  1005. sticks relentlessly

  1006. to a thankless

  1007. task of saying

  1008. hard things

  1009. that it costs

  1010. him.

  1011. Jeremiah 20,

  1012. Pasho,

  1013. the priest,

  1014. sticks him in the

  1015. stocks.

  1016. What does he do,

  1017. verse 3,

  1018. when he's released

  1019. from the stocks?

  1020. Jeremiah said to him,

  1021. the Lord does not

  1022. call your name

  1023. Pasho,

  1024. but terror on

  1025. every side.

  1026. The Lord is

  1027. going to judge

  1028. you.

  1029. He's got guts,

  1030. hasn't he?

  1031. And when it's

  1032. all over,

  1033. Jeremiah collapses

  1034. in a heap.

  1035. And the words

  1036. in chapter 20,

  1037. verses 7 to 18,

  1038. are probably the

  1039. most intense

  1040. outpouring of

  1041. discouragement

  1042. in the whole of

  1043. the Bible.

  1044. He's drained,

  1045. defeated,

  1046. depressed,

  1047. exhausted,

  1048. empty.

  1049. Oh Lord,

  1050. you've deceived

  1051. me,

  1052. and I shut up

  1053. the word and

  1054. it burns within

  1055. me.

  1056. If I speak it,

  1057. they just

  1058. mock me.

  1059. Verses 11 to 13,

  1060. his theology

  1061. momentarily kicks

  1062. in to steady

  1063. him before verse

  1064. 14,

  1065. he plunges deeper

  1066. into despair

  1067. than ever before.

  1068. Cursed be the

  1069. man who brought

  1070. the news to my

  1071. dad,

  1072. a son is born

  1073. to you,

  1074. making him

  1075. very glad.

  1076. Why did I

  1077. come out of

  1078. the womb?

  1079. Verse 18,

  1080. why did I

  1081. come out of

  1082. the womb to

  1083. see sorrow,

  1084. toil and sorrow

  1085. and spend my

  1086. days in shame?

  1087. Now imagine

  1088. for a moment

  1089. you are

  1090. Baruch the

  1091. scribe,

  1092. and you're

  1093. writing this

  1094. down.

  1095. He lifts his

  1096. pen and he

  1097. says to

  1098. Jeremiah,

  1099. are you sure?

  1100. You want me to

  1101. write this

  1102. down?

  1103. You want me to

  1104. include you?

  1105. This isn't

  1106. exactly you at

  1107. your best,

  1108. Jeremiah.

  1109. And Jeremiah

  1110. nods and says,

  1111. stays in.

  1112. It's exactly how

  1113. I felt,

  1114. it's what I

  1115. said,

  1116. it's what it

  1117. cost.

  1118. And you can

  1119. imagine the

  1120. same conversation

  1121. being rerun

  1122. after Jehoiachim

  1123. has thrown all

  1124. of Jeremiah's

  1125. work into the

  1126. fire,

  1127. and Baruch

  1128. is having to

  1129. write it out

  1130. all again,

  1131. and he comes

  1132. to the same

  1133. bit,

  1134. we're at

  1135. chapter 20,

  1136. Jeremiah,

  1137. do you really

  1138. want this

  1139. in?

  1140. It's got to

  1141. stay in.

  1142. Because Jeremiah

  1143. knows that

  1144. saying hard

  1145. things is

  1146. costly.

  1147. And often

  1148. speaking the

  1149. truth of the

  1150. gospel into

  1151. the lives of

  1152. our friends

  1153. or relatives

  1154. is not

  1155. something that

  1156. we're thankful

  1157. for.

  1158. In fact,

  1159. we are more

  1160. than likely to

  1161. be misrepresented

  1162. and slandered

  1163. and sidelined.

  1164. And often

  1165. things don't

  1166. change when we

  1167. speak the

  1168. truth,

  1169. even when we

  1170. speak it

  1171. lovingly.

  1172. Because when

  1173. God is at

  1174. work through

  1175. his word,

  1176. he exposes

  1177. and he

  1178. confronts,

  1179. and he

  1180. often breaks

  1181. down before

  1182. he builds

  1183. up.

  1184. God's word

  1185. in our

  1186. lives is

  1187. often painful.

  1188. And just

  1189. as often

  1190. those who

  1191. speak the

  1192. truth into

  1193. our lives,

  1194. they suffer,

  1195. don't they,

  1196. the collateral

  1197. damage.

  1198. You think

  1199. about it,

  1200. they don't

  1201. like it.

  1202. You probably

  1203. didn't like

  1204. it when

  1205. your parents

  1206. or whoever

  1207. it was

  1208. spoke God's

  1209. truth to

  1210. you at

  1211. first.

  1212. Christ.

  1213. But we

  1214. are prepared

  1215. to say

  1216. hard things

  1217. lovingly for

  1218. the sake of

  1219. Jesus Christ.

  1220. Well, if we

  1221. want to be

  1222. faithful, we've

  1223. got no

  1224. option.

  1225. Because as

  1226. John says,

  1227. whoever follows

  1228. Christ must

  1229. walk as he

  1230. did.

  1231. And that just

  1232. about brings us

  1233. to the end of

  1234. this fiercely

  1235. intense first

  1236. half of

  1237. Jeremiah.

  1238. From here on,

  1239. it seems that

  1240. Jeremiah has

  1241. embraced the fact

  1242. judgment is

  1243. coming.

  1244. And from

  1245. this point

  1246. on, he

  1247. calmly and

  1248. courageously

  1249. devotes the

  1250. rest of his

  1251. life to

  1252. persuading his

  1253. people, his

  1254. peers, that

  1255. this is what

  1256. is happening.

  1257. And he

  1258. holds out to

  1259. them the

  1260. hope.

  1261. The hope of

  1262. a new

  1263. covenant on

  1264. the other

  1265. side of

  1266. judgment.

  1267. So what

  1268. are we to

  1269. make of

  1270. this?

  1271. Well, I

  1272. think we

  1273. are to

  1274. marvel at

  1275. the sheer

  1276. commitment of

  1277. this man who

  1278. paid an

  1279. immense cost.

  1280. For

  1281. speaking the

  1282. truth.

  1283. To marvel at

  1284. him embodying

  1285. and living and

  1286. teaching the

  1287. very words of

  1288. God himself.

  1289. And he did

  1290. it all before

  1291. the coming of

  1292. the Lord

  1293. Jesus.

  1294. But we

  1295. have, of

  1296. course, seen

  1297. the one whom

  1298. Jeremiah only

  1299. caught glimpses

  1300. of.

  1301. The one whom

  1302. as God in

  1303. the flesh became

  1304. the perfect

  1305. suffering servant.

  1306. The one who

  1307. pressed on

  1308. even at points

  1309. where Jeremiah

  1310. wilted.

  1311. The one who

  1312. loved where

  1313. Jeremiah raged.

  1314. Even dying on

  1315. a cross for

  1316. us.

  1317. And it

  1318. is this

  1319. prophet, the

  1320. Lord Jesus

  1321. Christ, who

  1322. holds the

  1323. keys for

  1324. us.

  1325. Because he

  1326. is the

  1327. one who's

  1328. worth following.

  1329. And he

  1330. is the one

  1331. to whom we

  1332. commit ourselves.

  1333. And he is

  1334. the one we

  1335. receive when we

  1336. embrace the

  1337. message of the

  1338. gospel.

  1339. And he is the

  1340. one who we are

  1341. calling people to

  1342. respond to.

  1343. And he is the

  1344. one who calls

  1345. us to love

  1346. one another

  1347. with a real

  1348. truthful

  1349. costly love.

  1350. And he is the

  1351. one in whom

  1352. and for whom

  1353. and through

  1354. whom we live

  1355. and suffer

  1356. and rejoice.

  1357. And it is

  1358. worth it

  1359. because he is

  1360. worth it.

  1361. His love

  1362. has no limit.

  1363. His grace

  1364. has no measure.

  1365. His power

  1366. has no boundary.

  1367. No none to

  1368. man.

  1369. For out of his

  1370. goodness in

  1371. Jesus he

  1372. gareth and

  1373. gareth and

  1374. gareth again.

  1375. The cost

  1376. is worth

  1377. paying

  1378. because he

  1379. is worth it.

  1380. Let's pray.
