  1. Well, turn in Jeremiah, Jeremiah 46 to 52.

  2. If you've not got a Bible, it'd be great to get one.

  3. And let me say thank you.

  4. Thank you for turning up each week.

  5. This series on Jeremiah has certainly stretched me,

  6. and it really has stretched you.

  7. And there's been times when I've been preaching on 1.75 speed,

  8. and you've been very, very patient with it.

  9. I hope it's done you good.

  10. It's done me a lot of good.

  11. Do pray.

  12. I'm off to Wales.

  13. Tomorrow, to preach, I'm at a conference.

  14. So each morning until next Sunday,

  15. I'm doing a series in Acts

  16. at the Reformed Presbyterian Global Alliance Conference,

  17. which sounds a lot more glamorous than it is.

  18. But, yeah, do pray that that would be a good time.

  19. And then I'm on holiday for a couple of weeks.

  20. Let's bow our heads in prayer again.

  21. Father, we ask that the same,

  22. your same Holy Spirit who inspired Jeremiah,

  23. Jeremiah,

  24. our Lord, that he would enlighten our hearts and minds,

  25. and that you would speak to us tonight at the end of this magnificent and yet difficult book.

  26. And so we pray for your help in Jesus' name.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. I came across an article this week,

  30. which had a quotation from a book I'd never heard of,

  31. The Canticle for Leibovitz.

  32. I don't know if you've read it.

  33. The book envisages a dystopian scene far into the future,

  34. where the world as we know it is finally falling apart.

  35. And as they survey the wasteland that was Earth,

  36. a scientist asks the priest,

  37. how can such a great and wise civilization have destroyed itself so completely?

  38. Perhaps comes the answer from the priest,

  39. by being materially great and materially wise and nothing else.

  40. By being materially great and materially wise and nothing else.

  41. Sooner or later, individuals, nations, civilizations,

  42. that are materially great and materially wise and nothing else,

  43. do pay a heavy price.

  44. And we live in a part of the world which is materially great

  45. and materially wise and nothing else.

  46. In the UK, over the past 15 years,

  47. we have systematically made decisions

  48. which undermine the foundation of society as we know it,

  49. with barely a nod in the direction of serious and moral debate.

  50. We've redefined marriage.

  51. We've proposed and are proposing again assisted suicide.

  52. We have allowed abortion up to birth in certain instances

  53. with children with a disability.

  54. And we are proposing conversion therapy.

  55. And at the same time as all those things,

  56. we are still one of the most effective producers and consumers

  57. in human history.

  58. But we're not bothered, are we, really, where the rubbish goes.

  59. We are materially great, materially wise and nothing else.

  60. And we are remarkably similar to the Babylonians

  61. and the Egyptians and the Philistines

  62. and every other nation that populates the pages of chapters 46 to 52.

  63. On Sunday, May the 3rd,

  64. when we began that journey,

  65. and it was May the 3rd this year,

  66. when we started our journey in Jeremiah,

  67. we read these words from chapter 1 and verse 5.

  68. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.

  69. And before you were born, I consecrated you.

  70. I appointed you a prophet to the nations.

  71. And then verse 10,

  72. See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms

  73. to pluck up and to break down,

  74. to destroy and to overthrow,

  75. to build and to plant.

  76. But having gone through the book,

  77. what is strange about those verses?

  78. What's strange about those words,

  79. especially in the light of the last 45 chapters?

  80. As you cast your mind back over the past 11 weeks in Jeremiah,

  81. can you remember much about the nations?

  82. And there has been, I think, the occasional throwaway comment,

  83. but Jeremiah's preoccupation and God's preoccupation

  84. has been entirely with Judah.

  85. As the Lord pleads for those people to submit

  86. to the inevitable judgment,

  87. to take the pathway of grace,

  88. which will lead them into and eventually out of exile in Babylon.

  89. And so in chapter 1,

  90. if Jeremiah was expecting foreign travel,

  91. he must have been a bit disappointed.

  92. God appointed him as a prophet to the nations,

  93. and he only gets to go to Egypt,

  94. dragged by his disobedient compatriots.

  95. And so in chapter 46,

  96. after a very long wait,

  97. Jeremiah does eventually

  98. get to be a prophet to the nations,

  99. as God had said.

  100. Now, interestingly,

  101. the dates when you go through them

  102. at the start of some of these oracles

  103. show that this has been a feature of his ministry

  104. for many years.

  105. But as Jeremiah and Barak

  106. shape Jeremiah's ministry

  107. into a book,

  108. they hold off on the material

  109. to the nations

  110. right to the end.

  111. Why?

  112. It's because in the final version

  113. of Jeremiah's book,

  114. the second half of chapters 25 to 31,

  115. 51,

  116. trace

  117. one of the most radical reversals

  118. in all of human history.

  119. Back in chapter 25 and 26,

  120. Judah is

  121. united.

  122. Babylon is the weapon

  123. in God's hands.

  124. And Jeremiah finally comes

  125. to terms with this.

  126. And he emerges

  127. out of his angst

  128. to bring the word of God

  129. to the generations of the exiles.

  130. There's a new force, isn't there?

  131. A new freshness

  132. that helps them

  133. to look beyond

  134. the exile

  135. to God's dramatic intervention

  136. in the new covenant.

  137. He calls them to repent,

  138. to face their sins,

  139. to throw themselves

  140. on God in faith.

  141. He explains that

  142. as they do that,

  143. then God will dramatically

  144. reverse their fortunes.

  145. In chapter 46 to 51,

  146. every nation,

  147. including both Egypt

  148. and Babylon,

  149. and every new Babylon

  150. that's going to emerge

  151. in the future,

  152. is punished

  153. and God's people

  154. are rescued.

  155. This is the final message

  156. of the book.

  157. It's the final version

  158. of the book,

  159. which is then packed off

  160. in the diplomatic bag

  161. and sent to Babylon.

  162. And it isn't really a surprise

  163. it would have come

  164. as quite a comfort

  165. if you'd just been transported

  166. to Babylon

  167. in exile

  168. that these nations

  169. which have committed

  170. such heinous crimes

  171. will not get away with it.

  172. These seven chapters,

  173. they are long, aren't they?

  174. If you read them,

  175. they are graphic

  176. and they are incredibly rich

  177. in imagery.

  178. They cover a huge

  179. geographical area

  180. and a significant time span.

  181. But their message

  182. they bring out

  183. is they bring

  184. our extraordinary journey

  185. to a close.

  186. It can be summed up

  187. in two things, really.

  188. These chapters ask

  189. two things of us

  190. as a church.

  191. And the first is

  192. that we go

  193. to all the world.

  194. We go to all the world.

  195. Every so often

  196. in the Old Testament,

  197. here at the end

  198. of Jeremiah,

  199. in Amos,

  200. in the middle of Ezekiel,

  201. the horizons

  202. suddenly expand

  203. and they take in

  204. not just Judah

  205. or Israel,

  206. all those

  207. little ex-Nation states

  208. in the southeast corner

  209. of the Mediterranean,

  210. but they take in

  211. every nation

  212. of the world.

  213. Completely unexpectedly,

  214. Jeremiah speaks

  215. about the fate

  216. of Egypt

  217. in chapter 46

  218. and the once

  219. great Philistia

  220. in chapter 47

  221. and Judah's second

  222. cousin Moab

  223. and Ammon

  224. in Edom

  225. and then Damascus

  226. and Kedor

  227. and Hazor

  228. and Eon

  229. and the much

  230. less significant

  231. Babylonian vassal states

  232. before embarking

  233. on a sweeping

  234. condemnation

  235. of Nebuchadnezzar's

  236. Babylon

  237. and every superpower

  238. that will arise

  239. in its wake

  240. and the very fact

  241. that God

  242. addresses

  243. all the nations

  244. and God commands

  245. all the nations

  246. is something

  247. that you and I

  248. can easily miss

  249. and it's so

  250. staggeringly,

  251. breathtakingly,

  252. politically incorrect

  253. but the God

  254. of the Bible

  255. is unapologetically

  256. the God

  257. of all the nations

  258. that God,

  259. the creator

  260. of the cosmos

  261. retains his authority

  262. over all nations

  263. as they spread

  264. across the earth

  265. from the table

  266. of nations

  267. in Genesis chapter 11

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  268. to its dismissal

  269. of Pharaoh's hubris

  270. in the Exodus

  271. to his holding

  272. Moab

  273. and Edom

  274. and Ammon

  275. to account

  276. for the way

  277. that they treat

  278. his people

  279. as they walk

  280. through the wilderness

  281. in numbers

  282. to his judgment

  283. on the Canaanite tribes

  284. in Joshua

  285. to the toppling

  286. of the Philistine

  287. god Dagon

  288. and his giant

  289. henchman Goliath

  290. in 1 Samuel

  291. over and over

  292. and over again

  293. God asserts

  294. I am the Lord

  295. over all the earth

  296. and there is no other

  297. look with me

  298. at chapter 46

  299. and verse 7

  300. Egypt may huff

  301. and puff

  302. but listen to what

  303. God says

  304. 46 verse 7

  305. who is this rising

  306. like the Nile

  307. like rivers

  308. whose waters surge

  309. Egypt rises

  310. like the Nile

  311. like rivers

  312. whose waters surge

  313. he said

  314. I will rise

  315. I will cover the earth

  316. I will destroy cities

  317. and their inhabitants

  318. and God says

  319. bring it on

  320. advance of horses

  321. rage of chariots

  322. let the warriors

  323. go out

  324. men of Cushham

  325. put who

  326. handle the shield

  327. men of lured

  328. skilled in handling

  329. the bow

  330. but that day

  331. is the day

  332. of the Lord God

  333. of hosts

  334. a day of vengeance

  335. to avenge himself

  336. on all his foes

  337. the sword shall devour

  338. and be sated

  339. and drink its fill

  340. of their blood

  341. for the Lord God

  342. of hosts

  343. holds a sacrifice

  344. in the north country

  345. by the ravine

  346. Ephraites

  347. the Philistines

  348. they may strut

  349. their very aggressive stuff

  350. but God will overpower them

  351. and overcome them

  352. in a flash

  353. through the Egyptians

  354. of all people

  355. chapter 47 verse 3

  356. at the noise

  357. of the stamping of hooves

  358. of his stallions

  359. at the rushing

  360. of his chariots

  361. at the rumbling

  362. of their wheels

  363. the fathers

  364. look not back

  365. to their children

  366. so feeble

  367. are their hands

  368. they're too scared

  369. to look out

  370. even for their own kids

  371. because of the day

  372. that's coming

  373. to destroy

  374. all the Philistines

  375. to cut off

  376. from tyre and side

  377. and every helper

  378. there remains

  379. for the Lord

  380. is destroying

  381. the Philistines

  382. the remnant

  383. of the coastland

  384. of Kaphtor

  385. and then one of the most

  386. disturbing statements

  387. in the whole book

  388. of Jeremiah

  389. in verse 5

  390. boldness has come

  391. upon Gaza

  392. boldness is seen

  393. as a judgment

  394. in the Bible

  395. Moab is a madman

  396. brought to silence

  397. 48 verse 4

  398. Ammon will be

  399. terrorized by God

  400. driven out forever

  401. 49.5

  402. Edom will be made

  403. small among the nations

  404. 49.15

  405. Damascus is reduced

  406. to feebleness

  407. 49.24

  408. the tiny states

  409. Cador Hazel

  410. will follow suit

  411. before Elam

  412. scattered to the four winds

  413. 49.36

  414. and Yahweh

  415. the God of Judah

  416. is the Lord

  417. of all the earth

  418. and if we were

  419. in any doubt

  420. about that at all

  421. then the sweeping

  422. condemnation of Babylon

  423. in chapters 50 to 51

  424. make that clear

  425. and of course

  426. Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon

  427. is condemned

  428. isn't it

  429. for wreaking havoc

  430. in Judah

  431. and enjoying it

  432. far too much

  433. but these chapters

  434. go far beyond that

  435. just look at how

  436. Babylon is described

  437. in 1523 for example

  438. how the hammer

  439. of the whole earth

  440. is cut down and broken

  441. how Babylon

  442. has become a horror

  443. among the nations

  444. now strictly speaking

  445. Babylon wasn't the hammer

  446. of the whole earth

  447. Babylon did not become

  448. a horror

  449. among all the nations

  450. but this is not just

  451. exaggeration

  452. it is the start

  453. of a depiction

  454. of Babylon

  455. that is the archetype

  456. of human rule

  457. and rebellion

  458. against God

  459. and the judgment

  460. of Babylon

  461. is a message

  462. to everyone

  463. who will ever

  464. oppose God

  465. in time and space

  466. and so chapter 50

  467. and verse 46 says

  468. at the sound

  469. of the capture

  470. of Babylon

  471. the earth

  472. shall tremble

  473. and her cries

  474. shall be heard

  475. among the nations

  476. and the poetic

  477. language is there

  478. which tells us

  479. how God

  480. will use Babylon

  481. and call it

  482. to account

  483. in chapter 51

  484. it's a further

  485. suggestion

  486. that Babylon

  487. is already

  488. a symbol

  489. as it was

  490. back in Genesis 11

  491. in the tower

  492. of Babel

  493. of all that is

  494. wrong in the world

  495. it is the city

  496. of man

  497. which will one day

  498. be destroyed

  499. chapter 51

  500. verse 25

  501. behold I'm against you

  502. or destroying mountain

  503. declares the Lord

  504. which destroys

  505. the whole earth

  506. I'll stretch out

  507. my hand against you

  508. and roll you down

  509. from the crags

  510. and make you

  511. a burnt mountain

  512. verse 29

  513. the land trembles

  514. and writhes in pain

  515. for the Lord's

  516. purposes against Babylon

  517. stand to make

  518. the land of Babylon

  519. a desolation

  520. without inhabitant

  521. finally verse 47

  522. therefore behold

  523. the days are coming

  524. when I will punish

  525. the images of Babylon

  526. her whole land

  527. shall be put to shame

  528. and all her slain

  529. shall fall in the midst

  530. of it

  531. then the heavens

  532. and the earth

  533. and all that is in them

  534. shall sing for joy

  535. over the fall of Babylon

  536. for the destroyer

  537. shall come against them

  538. out of the north

  539. Babylon must fall

  540. for the slain of Israel

  541. just as for Babylon

  542. have fallen

  543. the slain of all the earth

  544. the fall of Babylon

  545. at the end of Jeremiah

  546. at the hands of the Medes

  547. represents the eventual fall

  548. of every evil empire

  549. because the sovereign lord

  550. of the universe

  551. Jeremiah tells us

  552. will ensure that justice

  553. is done

  554. Babylon will fall

  555. now what on earth

  556. does this have to do

  557. with us

  558. these chapters

  559. in the Old Testament

  560. are the equivalent

  561. of Revelation chapter 18

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  562. these chapters

  563. are Jeremiah's exposition

  564. of the universal

  565. unchanging sovereignty

  566. of our God

  567. and so here is how

  568. John picks up

  569. on these chapters

  570. to describe his vision

  571. in Revelation 18

  572. remember Babylon

  573. encapsulates

  574. every anti-God force

  575. in the world

  576. and it's dealt

  577. with like this

  578. after this

  579. I saw another angel

  580. coming down from heaven

  581. having great authority

  582. and the earth

  583. was made bright

  584. with his glory

  585. and he called out

  586. with a mighty voice

  587. fallen fallen

  588. is Babylon the great

  589. she's become

  590. a dwelling place

  591. for demons

  592. a haunt

  593. for every unclean spirit

  594. a haunt

  595. for every unclean bird

  596. a haunt

  597. for every unclean

  598. undetestable beast

  599. it picks up

  600. the language

  601. of Jeremiah

  602. for all nations

  603. have drunk the wine

  604. of the passion

  605. of her sexual immorality

  606. and the kings

  607. of the earth

  608. have committed

  609. immorality with her

  610. and the merchants

  611. of the earth

  612. have grown rich

  613. from the power

  614. of her luxurious living

  615. this is a nation

  616. being described

  617. that is materially wise

  618. and materially great

  619. but having nothing else

  620. and God's people

  621. are called

  622. to come out from her

  623. before she's judged

  624. along with the kings

  625. of the earth

  626. for this reason

  627. her plagues

  628. will come in a single day

  629. death and mourning

  630. and famine

  631. and she will be

  632. burned up with fire

  633. for mighty

  634. is the Lord God

  635. who's judged her

  636. and the kings

  637. of the earth

  638. who committed

  639. sexual immorality

  640. and lived in luxury

  641. willow with weep

  642. and wail over her

  643. and when they see

  644. the smoke of her burning

  645. they will stand

  646. far off

  647. in fear of her torment

  648. and say

  649. alas

  650. alas

  651. you great city

  652. you mighty city

  653. Babylon

  654. for in a single hour

  655. your judgment

  656. has come

  657. what does this matter

  658. it matters

  659. because ultimately

  660. this is the foundation

  661. for our mandates

  662. to go out

  663. into all the world

  664. as Christ's church

  665. this matters

  666. because this is the reason

  667. we must go out

  668. into all the world

  669. because our God

  670. is the Lord

  671. of all the world

  672. when Jesus says

  673. all authority

  674. in heaven

  675. and on earth

  676. has been given to me

  677. go therefore

  678. to all nations

  679. make disciples

  680. baptizing them

  681. in the name of the Father

  682. the Son

  683. and the Holy Spirit

  684. and teaching them

  685. to do all I've commanded

  686. what is the authority

  687. with which Jesus speaks

  688. it is the authority

  689. of God

  690. displayed

  691. in Jeremiah 46

  692. to 51

  693. and elsewhere

  694. it is the authority

  695. of the Lord

  696. of the nations

  697. which the Father

  698. has devolved

  699. to the Son

  700. and so Philippians 2

  701. tells us

  702. doesn't it

  703. therefore God

  704. has exalted him

  705. Jesus

  706. and bestowed on him

  707. the name that is

  708. above every name

  709. so that at the name

  710. of Jesus

  711. every knee should bow

  712. in heaven and on earth

  713. and under the earth

  714. and every tongue confess

  715. that Jesus Christ

  716. is Lord

  717. to the glory

  718. of God the Father

  719. and so as we come

  720. to the end

  721. of this academic year

  722. as we come to the end

  723. of this series

  724. we can reflect

  725. I think

  726. in Jeremiah

  727. on how God

  728. has enlarged

  729. our view of him

  730. as the sovereign Lord

  731. and his glory

  732. and that we are his

  733. and that he is

  734. the Lord

  735. of the universe

  736. of the cosmos

  737. and because of that

  738. we must go where

  739. he sends us

  740. as a church

  741. one writer says this

  742. the highest

  743. of all missionary

  744. motives

  745. is neither obedience

  746. to the great commission

  747. importance that is

  748. nor love

  749. for sinners

  750. who are alienated

  751. and perishing

  752. strong as that incentive is

  753. especially when we

  754. contemplate the wrath

  755. of God

  756. but the highest

  757. of all missionary

  758. motives

  759. is zeal

  760. burning

  761. and passionate

  762. zeal

  763. for the glory

  764. of Jesus Christ

  765. only one

  766. imperialism

  767. is Christian

  768. and that is

  769. concern for his

  770. imperial majesty

  771. Jesus Christ

  772. and for the glory

  773. of his empire

  774. or kingdom

  775. before this

  776. supreme

  777. goal

  778. of the Christian

  779. mission

  780. all unworthy

  781. motives

  782. wither and die

  783. salvation

  784. that's the first

  785. part of the message

  786. of these chapters

  787. that we are to go

  788. into all the world

  789. because God is

  790. the Lord of all the world

  791. and the second

  792. is not complimented

  793. as you go

  794. as his church

  795. preach

  796. salvation

  797. and judgment

  798. which comes through Christ

  799. if any book of the Bible

  800. is about this

  801. great biblical theme

  802. of salvation

  803. through judgment

  804. it's got to be Jeremiah

  805. in fact

  806. the first two thirds

  807. of the book

  808. the unique thing

  809. about this book

  810. is the way

  811. in which it

  812. details the prophet's

  813. own struggle

  814. to embrace this

  815. how Jeremiah

  816. had to

  817. internalize

  818. his own message

  819. he had to understand

  820. that salvation

  821. would come through judgment

  822. there's no other book

  823. in the Bible

  824. I think

  825. that exposes us

  826. to the gut-wrenching way

  827. the heart-rending

  828. quality

  829. of the judgment

  830. of God

  831. and then we are

  832. flooded with relief

  833. by Jeremiah

  834. with the realization

  835. that God the judge

  836. is also God

  837. who's working

  838. through salvation

  839. it's a book

  840. isn't it

  841. that details

  842. infidelity

  843. as we've listened

  844. to Jeremiah

  845. and heard the sins

  846. of Judah recounted

  847. the sins of Egypt

  848. and Babylon

  849. they're displayed

  850. for all to see

  851. the anguish

  852. of the prophet

  853. is played out

  854. before us

  855. and of course

  856. the dominant note

  857. in all of the oracles

  858. against the nations

  859. is judgment

  860. it's crazy

  861. to suggest otherwise

  862. it's why it makes

  863. Jeremiah overwhelming

  864. we've seen enough

  865. of the text

  866. to get that

  867. we want to cry

  868. enough

  869. Lord

  870. enough

  871. telling us

  872. about the judgment

  873. we know that

  874. but there are

  875. minor notes

  876. that often we miss

  877. in Jeremiah

  878. there are grace notes

  879. which keep sounding

  880. through these

  881. thunderous messages

  882. so look with me

  883. at 46 verse 25

  884. and the Lord of hosts

  885. the God of Israel

  886. said behold

  887. I am bringing

  888. punishment

  889. upon Ammon

  890. of Thebes

  891. and Pharaoh

  892. and Egypt

  893. on her gods

  894. and her kings

  895. upon Pharaoh

  896. and upon all those

  897. who trust in him

  898. I'm going to deliver

  899. them into the hand

  900. of those who seek

  901. their life

  902. into the hand

  903. of Nebuchadnezz

  904. the king of Babylon

  905. and his officers

  906. and afterwards

  907. Egypt will be inhabited

  908. as in the days

  909. of old

  910. declares the Lord

  911. and this

  912. 48 verse 47

  913. yet

  914. I will restore

  915. the fortunes

  916. of Moab

  917. in the latter days

  918. declares the Lord

  919. 49 verse 6

  920. afterwards

  921. I will restore

  922. the fortunes

  923. of the Ammonites

  924. declares the Lord

  925. 49 verse 39

  926. in the latter days

  927. I will restore

  928. the fortunes

  929. of Elam

  930. declares the Lord

  931. and these chapters

  932. are

  933. all the more remarkable

  934. because when you look

  935. at the language

  936. of 48 and 49

  937. of talking about restoring

  938. it's the same

  939. language that's used

  940. in chapter 3

  941. verse 7

  942. and 17

  943. and 1215

  944. and 16

  945. it's precisely

  946. the same language

  947. that God used

  948. about restoring

  949. the fortunes

  950. of Judah

  951. after the exile

  952. so alongside

  953. the judgment

  954. of the nations

  955. who oppose God

  956. Jeremiah holds

  957. out hope

  958. to people

  959. from Egypt

  960. and Moab

  961. and Ammon

  962. and Elam

  963. he holds out

  964. hope presumably

  965. to those

  966. who will bow

  967. before him

  968. it's noticeable

  969. but it's not

  970. explained

  971. that there's

  972. no such hope

  973. held out

  974. to the Philistines

  975. Damascus

  976. Kedor

  977. Hazor

  978. or Babylon

  979. this is

  980. not a universal

  981. salvation

  982. if I can put it

  983. like this

  984. in the end

  985. of Jeremiah

  986. it is

  987. the God

  988. of mercy

  989. saving those

  990. who are drawn

  991. to him

  992. in faith

  993. in fact

  994. it's impossible

  995. to read

  996. Jeremiah

  997. I think

  998. it's impossible

  999. to read

  1000. the Bible

  1001. and come away

  1002. without getting

  1003. the idea

  1004. that when

  1005. God speaks

  1006. some respond

  1007. and are

  1008. rescued

  1009. and some

  1010. reject

  1011. the very

  1012. same words

  1013. and they

  1014. are lost

  1015. and it is

  1016. our job

  1017. as a church

  1018. to go

  1019. and proclaim

  1020. this message

  1021. which produces

  1022. salvation

  1023. and judgment

  1024. in the Lord

  1025. Jesus Christ

  1026. and as Sunday

  1027. by Sunday

  1028. you come

  1029. and hear

  1030. God's word

  1031. you need to know

1032. and I need to know

  1033. that it will

  1034. save some

  1035. and it will

  1036. harden others

  1037. which tells you

  1038. that it's not

  1039. work for the

  1040. faint hearted

  1041. when you tell

  1042. the gospel

  1043. in Little Stars

  1044. or the language

  1045. class

  1046. or Club 16

  1047. or Ignite

  1048. or in Sunday

  1049. school

  1050. or in house

  1051. group

  1052. God's word

  1053. will do two

  1054. things

  1055. it will

  1056. save some

  1057. and it will

  1058. harden others

  1059. for Jeremiah

  1060. his message

  1061. to the nations

  1062. in the short term

  1063. at least was bad

  1064. news

  1065. in these chapters

  1066. he says

  1067. the violence

  1068. of the nations

  1069. particularly

  1070. against God's

  1071. people

  1072. will be avenged

  1073. the arrogance

  1074. of the nations

  1075. will be brought low

  1076. the gods

  1077. of the nations

  1078. will be powerless

  1079. to save

  1080. the nations

  1081. in turn

  1082. will be

  1083. devastated

  1084. by other nations

  1085. but there will

  1086. also be a

  1087. stunning reversal

  1088. for Judah

  1089. Jeremiah 51

  1090. ends like this

  1091. from verse 59

  1092. after all the

  1093. poetic

  1094. extravagance

  1095. there's something

  1096. pretty prosaic

  1097. the end of

  1098. verse 59

  1099. 51

  1100. the word that

  1101. Jeremiah the prophet

  1102. commanded

  1103. Saraiah the son

  1104. of Neriah

  1105. the son

  1106. of Massiah

  1107. when he went

  1108. with Zedekiah

  1109. king of Judah

  1110. to Babylon

  1111. in the fourth

  1112. year of his reign

  1113. Saraiah was

  1114. the quartermaster

  1115. he was in charge

  1116. of the stores

  1117. and Jeremiah

  1118. wrote in a book

  1119. all the disaster

  1120. that should come

  1121. upon Babylon

  1122. all these words

  1123. that are written

  1124. concerning Babylon

  1125. and Jeremiah

  1126. said to Saraiah

  1127. when you come

  1128. to Babylon

  1129. see that you

  1130. read all these

  1131. words and pray

  1132. oh Lord

  1133. you have said

  1134. concerning this

  1135. place that

  1136. you'll cut it

  1137. off

  1138. so that nothing

  1139. shall dwell

  1140. in it

  1141. neither man

  1142. nor beast

  1143. and it shall

  1144. be desolate

  1145. forever

  1146. when you finish

  1147. reading this book

  1148. tie a stone

  1149. to it

  1150. cast it

  1151. into the middle

  1152. of the river

  1153. Euphrates

  1154. and say

  1155. thus shall

  1156. Babylon sink

  1157. to rise no more

  1158. because of the

  1159. disaster

  1160. that I'm bringing

  1161. upon her

  1162. and they shall

  1163. become exhausted

  1164. thus far

  1165. are the words

  1166. of Jeremiah

  1167. that's how his

  1168. word finish

  1169. he's told

  1170. read it out

  1171. pray

  1172. perform a dramatic

  1173. sign

  1174. throw it in the

  1175. river

  1176. and probably

  1177. run off

  1178. and that's it

  1179. for Jeremiah

  1180. all we get

  1181. at this point

  1182. whether it's

  1183. Jeremiah or

  1184. Baruch

  1185. they stick in

  1186. a large section

  1187. of 2 Kings

  1188. 24 and 25

  1189. detailing the

  1190. events of the

  1191. exile

  1192. he doesn't

  1193. change anything

  1194. at all

  1195. he just

  1196. wants to

  1197. underline

  1198. everything

  1199. that God

  1200. has said

  1201. through Jeremiah

  1202. played out

  1203. exactly as he

  1204. announced

  1205. and the fact

  1206. that Jeremiah's

  1207. message

  1208. the salvation

  1209. and the judgment

  1210. that he proclaimed

  1211. would one day

  1212. be brought to

  1213. life in real

  1214. time

  1215. by one man

  1216. who is a

  1217. descendant of

  1218. Jehoiachin

  1219. it's funny

  1220. that the book

  1221. ends with him

  1222. is that he

  1223. really was a

  1224. hopeless king

  1225. he ruled for

  1226. three months

  1227. and he spent

  1228. the next 37

  1229. years in

  1230. captivity in

  1231. Babylon

  1232. politically

  1233. speaking

  1234. Jehoiachin

  1235. was an

  1236. idiot

  1237. but he

  1238. was a

  1239. Davidic

  1240. idiot

  1241. and just

  1242. like two

  1243. kings

  1244. Jeremiah

  1245. ends like

  1246. this

  1247. in the

  1248. 37 year

  1249. of exile

  1250. Jehoiachin

  1251. king of

  1252. Judah

  1253. in the

  1254. 12th

  1255. month

  1256. on the

  1257. 25th

  1258. day of

  1259. the

  1260. month

  1261. evil

  1262. Moradach

  1263. king of

  1264. Babylon

  1265. in the

  1266. year that

  1267. he began

  1268. to reign

  1269. graciously

  1270. freed

  1271. Jehoiachin

  1272. king of

  1273. Judah

  1274. and brought

  1275. him out

  1276. of prison

  1277. there's this

  1278. harmless king

  1279. and the new

  1280. guy in charge

  1281. wants to look

  1282. gracious

  1283. so he

  1284. wheels out

  1285. Jehoiachin

  1286. he speaks

  1287. kindly to him

  1288. he gives him

  1289. a seat above

  1290. the seats of the

  1291. kings who were

  1292. with him in

  1293. Babylon

  1294. Jehoiachin

  1295. changes his

  1296. prison clothes

  1297. he eats at

  1298. the king's

  1299. table

  1300. he gets an

  1301. alliance

  1302. it's not much

  1303. but it's

  1304. enough

  1305. it's the

  1306. hope of a

  1307. king from

  1308. David's

  1309. line

  1310. a

  1311. Deuteronomy

  1312. 17 kind

  1313. of king

  1314. a king

  1315. who will

  1316. bring in

  1317. the new

  1318. covenant

  1319. of Jeremiah

  1320. 30 to

  1321. 33

  1322. the hope

  1323. of the new

  1324. covenant

  1325. is flickering

  1326. because of

  1327. Jehoiachin

  1328. or Jeconiah

  1329. as he's also

  1330. called

  1331. he's alive

  1332. and God's

  1333. plan is

  1334. still on

  1335. track

  1336. and so

  1337. several

  1338. hundred years

  1339. later

  1340. another

  1341. Jewish man

  1342. Matthew

  1343. was able to

  1344. write these

  1345. words at the

  1346. start of his

  1347. gospel

  1348. and after the

  1349. deportation of

  1350. Babylon

  1351. Jeconiah

  1352. was the

  1353. father of

  1354. Shealtiel

  1355. and Shealtiel

  1356. the father of

  1357. Zerubbabel

  1358. and Zerubbabel

  1359. the father of

  1360. Abiud and Abiud

  1361. the father of

  1362. Eliakim and

  1363. Eliakim the father

  1364. of Atol

  1365. and Azal the

  1366. father of

  1367. Zadok and

  1368. Zadok the

  1369. father of

  1370. Achim and

  1371. Achim the

  1372. father of

  1373. Eliud and

  1374. Eliud the

  1375. father of

  1376. Eliezer and

  1377. Eliezer the

  1378. father of

  1379. Mathen and

  1380. Mathen the

  1381. father of

  1382. Jacob and

  1383. Jacob the

  1384. father of

  1385. Joseph the

  1386. husband of

  1387. Mary of

  1388. whom Jesus

  1389. was born who

  1390. is called

  1391. Christ.

  1392. Jeremiah

  1393. preaches

  1394. salvation through

  1395. judgment.

  1396. Not salvation

  1397. through judgment

  1398. is embodied and

  1399. achieved and

  1400. acted and

  1401. proclaimed in

  1402. the Lord Jesus

  1403. Christ.

  1404. And we

  1405. have to do

  1406. the same.

  1407. To preach

  1408. Jesus Christ

  1409. and call people

  1410. to repentance

  1411. come what may

  1412. in the face of

  1413. coming judgment.

  1414. We push

  1415. Jesus to the

  1416. center of

  1417. church life

  1418. and we

  1419. call on people

  1420. to respond to

  1421. him by faith

  1422. and we know

  1423. that that will

  1424. either lead to

  1425. hardening and

  1426. judgment or

  1427. salvation.

  1428. salvation.

  1429. And that

  1430. brings us to

  1431. the end of

  1432. this most

  1433. personal of

  1434. books where

  1435. Jeremiah lays

  1436. out for us how

  1437. the prophet of

  1438. God had to get

  1439. this message of

  1440. God's glorious

  1441. sovereignty revealed

  1442. in the coming of

  1443. Christ in judgment

  1444. and salvation under

  1445. his skin and he

  1446. had to feel it

  1447. and he had to

  1448. live it and he

  1449. had to submit to

  1450. it.

  1451. He had to swallow

  1452. it and then he

  1453. had to preach it

  1454. and he had to

  1455. get it under

  1456. his skin.

  1457. And we have to

  1458. get the gospel

  1459. of salvation

  1460. through judgment

  1461. under our skin

  1462. so that we can

  1463. never be the

  1464. same again.

  1465. So that it is

  1466. burnt into our

  1467. hearts and our

  1468. minds so that it

  1469. motivates every

  1470. corner of church

  1471. life.

  1472. So that we

  1473. live in it by

  1474. the power of the

  1475. Holy Spirit.

  1476. And if tonight

  1477. we don't have

  1478. that God

  1479. given resolve,

  1480. let's throw

  1481. ourselves on

  1482. God.

  1483. The God who

  1484. loves us and

  1485. gave himself for

  1486. us and ask

  1487. him to give us

  1488. the grace that

  1489. we need to

  1490. proclaim Christ

  1491. to our

  1492. children, to

  1493. the ministries

  1494. that we have in

  1495. this church and

  1496. to the nations

  1497. that are in

  1498. this city.

  1499. Because 2

    2 Corinthians 4:1

  1500. Corinthians 4

  1501. verse 1 says

  1502. therefore having

  1503. this ministry by

  1504. the mercy of

  1505. God we do

  1506. not lose

  1507. heart, we

  1508. don't give

  1509. up.

  1510. But we've

  1511. renounced

  1512. disgraceful and

  1513. underhanded ways,

  1514. we refuse to

  1515. practice cunning

  1516. or to tamper

  1517. with God's

  1518. word and we

  1519. won't pretend to

  1520. be something that

  1521. we're not.

  1522. But by the

  1523. open statement of

  1524. the truth we

  1525. would commend

  1526. ourselves to

  1527. everyone's

  1528. conscience in

  1529. the sight of

  1530. God and even

  1531. if our gospel

  1532. is veiled,

  1533. it's veiled to

  1534. those who are

  1535. perishing,

  1536. in their

  1537. case the

  1538. God of

  1539. this world

  1540. has blinded

  1541. the minds

  1542. of unbelievers

  1543. to keep

  1544. them from

  1545. seeing the

  1546. light of

  1547. the gospel

  1548. of the

  1549. glory of

  1550. Christ who

  1551. is the

  1552. image of

  1553. God.

  1554. For what we

  1555. proclaim is

  1556. not ourselves

  1557. but Jesus

  1558. Christ as

  1559. Lord,

  1560. with ourselves

  1561. as your

  1562. servants for

  1563. Jesus'

  1564. sake.

  1565. For God

  1566. who said

  1567. that light

  1568. shine out of

  1569. darkness

  1570. has shone in

  1571. our hearts

  1572. to give the

  1573. light of the

  1574. knowledge of the

  1575. glory of God

  1576. in the face

  1577. of Jesus

  1578. Christ.

  1579. And so let

  1580. us go into

  1581. all the world

  1582. because God

  1583. is the Lord

  1584. of all the

  1585. world.

  1586. And let us

  1587. preach Christ

  1588. salvation

  1589. through judgment.

  1590. Let's pray.
