  3. Abraham falls, but the up, God makes a promise.

  4. Evil fills the world, but God saves Noah.

  5. Abraham is called, but almost destroys the promise, but God rescues.

  6. As you follow God's people and his promise to save the world,

  7. it isn't this neat straight line journey with no hiccups.

  8. No, it's actually a real mess.

  9. It's a rollercoaster of ups and downs.

  10. That's why all of our lives are never just this neat straight line.

  11. But we also see in Genesis, the rollercoaster never collapses.

  12. It keeps going, because God's grace is always there to rescue and restore.

  13. And this constant cycle of sin and grace, sin and grace,

  14. it's there throughout Genesis because it is showing us

  15. this is what life is like under God's promise.

  16. This is the reality of being God's people in Christ's church.

  17. It's not neat or perfect.

  18. It's messy.

  19. The Christian life is full of failures and sins and brokenness and even shattered families.

  20. But there is something constant in our life that stops us from collapsing.

  21. It is the grace of God.

  22. The God who sees us and restores us and looks after us as we live under his promise.

  23. And this chapter in front of us really captures the down and the up of the Christian life.

  24. This is a very unvarnished and honest account of the messy reality of God's people.

  25. And so if you are here tonight and you are thinking that Christians are just these glossy people

  26. with picture perfect lives, I hope your assumptions will be dashed tonight.

  27. Because that is simply not the reality.

  28. But I also hope you'll see there is something even more beautiful going on in a Christian's life.

  29. It is the grace of God who restores us.

  30. And so this chapter is a story of two hearts, sin and grace.

  31. Our mess and God's restoration.

  32. And this chapter is here to help us to understand the mess of our lives.

  33. To understand how we wander, why we doubt, how we end up in those downs and to warn us of it.

  34. But this also shows us the God who restores.

  35. Our saviour who helps the wandering and the broken and the destitute.

  36. And he sees all our affliction.

  37. So we're going to look at the two halves of this chapter.

  38. The mess of sin and the grace when God sees us.

  39. But first we need to recognise, we need to understand the mess of sin.

  40. My first point today, the mess of sin.

  41. This chapter begins with a double problem.

  42. Did you see, look at verse 1.

  43. Now Sarai, Abraham's wife, had borne him no children.

  44. So not only is Sarai suffering the painful grief of childlessness, an agonising experience for so many.

  45. But there is something even worse.

  46. The child she hopes for is meant to bring blessing to the world.

  47. That's the promise God made to Abraham.

  48. Abraham's going to have a child, offspring.

  49. And from him will come a great nation.

  50. And through that offspring, God's blessing will reach the world.

  51. God is going to save this world from the curse through someone coming from Abraham's family tree.

  52. It's the same promise of the gospel we have today.

  53. Except we know who the offspring turns out to be.

  54. We can look back to see who Jesus is.

  55. See the fulfilment in him.

  56. But Abraham and Sarai can't look back.

  57. No, they are looking ahead.

  58. Waiting for God to act.

  59. Waiting for God to do something.

  60. But they don't see anything.

  61. In fact, look at verse 3.

  62. It's been 10 years of nothing.

  63. Can you imagine how hard that is?

  64. 10 years of waiting.

  65. I'm sure we all know that feeling when life seems bleak.

  66. And God has made big promises for us.

  67. Promises to be with us.

  68. And love us.

  69. But we just don't see it.

  70. We don't see God working in our lives.

  71. We don't see his promises coming true.

  72. We wait and we wait and we wait.

  73. We don't see light at the end of the tunnel.

  74. And it can make us doubt God, can't it?

  75. We wonder, where are you, Lord, in all of this?

  76. And when that happens, we can either, by faith, wait on the Lord.

  77. And even though we don't see him, we trust God that he is there and he is doing something in my life, even though I don't understand it.

  78. Or we can just become bitter and replace that faith with doubt.

  79. Well, look how Sarai responds, verse 3.

  80. And Sarai said to Abraham,

  81. Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.

  82. What's she doing?

  83. She doesn't see God working according to her timings and her ways.

  84. And so she becomes bitter.

  85. And she doubts God's character.

  86. In fact, she blames God.

  87. The Lord has prevented me.

  88. God's done this.

  89. God's set me up.

  90. God's against me right now.

  91. She thinks God is useless and can't and won't fulfill his promises.

  92. And so, because of that, she starts looking at everything in the wrong way.

  93. Like lenses over our eyes.

  94. With the lens of faith, we may not see God at work right now, but we realize he is there.

  95. He is at work and his promises never fail.

  96. And so we see this problem in my life.

  97. I may not understand it, but I know it's there for a reason.

  98. But with the lens of doubt, we only see our problems as God is against me.

  99. Or God is useless.

  100. Or God can't really help me in this cursed world.

  101. And so when we think like that, what do we try to do?

  102. We try to fix it ourselves.

  103. If God won't make me happy, then I'll take my happiness into my own hands.

  104. Which is exactly what Sarai does, verse 2.

  105. Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.

  106. Go into my servant.

  107. It may be that I shall obtain children by her.

  108. If God won't bring this child, I will.

  109. If God can't bless me, then I'll find the blessing myself.

  110. So she takes plans into her own hands.

  111. And she gets Abraham to sleep with her servant, Hagar.

  112. And did you notice?

  113. It's just like the Garden of Eden all over again.

  114. Like Eve, Sarai doubts God's character.

  115. Like Eve, Sarai tempts her husband with this plan.

  116. And like Adam, Abraham listens to the voice of his wife instead of leading her.

  117. And like the fruits, look at verse 3.

  118. Sarai took Hagar and gave her to Abraham.

  119. And like Adam and Eve, they try to find blessing without God.

  120. This same pattern of sin continues east of Eden.

  121. We see it with Abraham.

  122. We see it with Sarai.

  123. And we see it in our own hearts today.

  124. When we don't see God working the way we want him to.

  125. And we're dissatisfied with what the Lord has given us in this life.

  126. And we aren't happy in the way that we hoped.

  127. And maybe, maybe, like Sarai, it's the disappointment that God hasn't given me a family.

  128. And we don't see light at the end of the tunnel.

  129. And we can't see his plans.

  130. We don't like his timings.

  131. And the new creation isn't coming fast enough.

  132. And so what do we do?

  133. We doubt God.

  134. And we take things into our own hands.

  135. Well, if God won't fix my dissatisfaction, well, I'll find satisfaction somewhere else.

  136. I'll find it in my work.

  137. Forget church.

  138. Forget Sundays.

  139. Let's really do something with my career now.

  140. Or if it's not God's plan to give me a family, well, I'll make my own plans.

  141. And we get on the apps.

  142. We start texting.

  143. We say yes to those coffee meetups with that guy at work, the guy at the gym.

  144. Or God isn't working fast enough with the pain in my life.

  145. But drinking helps it instantly.

  146. So I'll take it into my own hands.

  147. This is what we do.

  148. God has promised to restore Eden, but I can't see it, so I'll make an Eden for myself.

  149. We may not realize it, but it is the attitude of, I can create blessing better than God can.

  150. And in fact, in Galatians, in the New Testament, Paul looks back at this very moment with Sarai and Hagar,

  151. and he says, what is going on here is actually, at heart, this is Sarai trying to save herself.

  152. Abraham can either have a saviour child through Sarai, relying on God's promise, and therefore salvation will come by God alone.

  153. By faith, God will be the one to fix the sin and mess of this world.

  154. Or, Abraham and Sarai can have a child through Hagar, relying on what they do, their works, their plans, their efforts,

  155. and trying to fix sin themselves.

  156. What we have here is salvation by faith versus salvation by works.

  157. And when we doubt God and try to fix our fallen life with what we do,

  158. whether it be building a happy life our way,

  159. or trying to cover up our guilt by living a better life,

  160. either way, ultimately, we are trying to save ourselves.

  161. But it doesn't work.

  162. Because the only way out of this curse is for God to save.

  163. To trust in God's promise, faith.

  164. This is why Christ came.

  165. Not for you to dig yourself out of this hole,

  166. but for Christ to reach down and pick you up himself.

  167. Not for you to work,

  168. but for Christ to work for you.

  169. And that is the choice set before us.

  170. With our sin, with our guilt,

  171. with whatever misery and pain we are going through,

  172. and we struggle to see God,

  173. or any light at the end of the tunnel,

  174. will you leave it in God's hands?

  175. Or will you take it into your own hands?

  176. Well, this chapter warns us,

  177. when we do take it into our own hands,

  178. it only leaves us in a bigger mess.

  179. Just look at the fallout of Sarai's plan.

  180. Verse 4.

  181. Hagar becomes pregnant,

  182. and Hagar looked with contempt on her mistress.

  183. Hagar looked down on Sarai,

  184. mocks her.

  185. I got pregnant and you didn't, Sarai.

  186. And it sparks jealousy,

  187. a rivalry in the household.

  188. And verse 5.

  189. Sarai says to Abraham,

  190. this is all your fault.

  191. I gave her to you,

  192. and now look how she's treating me.

  193. It's all your fault, Abraham.

  194. Even though this was actually Sarai's plan.

  195. But Abraham, he's stuck in the middle now.

  196. And so verse 6, he says,

  197. well, she's your servant,

  198. you deal with her.

  199. And so Sarai is harsh with Hagar.

  200. Hagar makes her life a living nightmare.

  201. And so Hagar runs away.

  202. Away from Canaan,

  203. away from the promise,

  204. and away from God.

  205. Broken family,

  206. broken marriage,

  207. runaway pregnancy,

  208. shattered faith.

  209. It is by any standard,

  210. an absolute mess.

  211. This is a very,

  212. very low dip

  213. in the roller coaster.

  214. And how did it all start?

  215. With doubting God

  216. and taking things

  217. into our own hands.

  218. From that

  219. to now this mess.

  220. And this is showing us

  221. something very important

  222. that we need to know.

  223. Sin

  224. has real consequences.

  225. Sin

  226. never just

  227. happens

  228. in a vacuum.

  229. No.

  230. Sin

  231. ripples out

  232. into this world

  233. and into our lives

  234. and causes

  235. real,

  236. tangible mess.

  237. Our decisions

  238. to make an Eden

  239. for ourselves

  240. here on earth

  241. without God,

  242. it has consequences.

  243. It can

  244. shatter families.

  245. It can

  246. taint marriages.

  247. It can

  248. cause

  249. rivalries,

  250. jealousy.

  251. jealousy.

  252. And like

  253. Hagar,

  254. it can even

  255. make people

  256. run away

  257. from God

  258. altogether.

  259. It is what we

  260. painfully see

  261. all around us

  262. and it's what we

  263. painfully see

  264. in our own lives.

  265. And these

  266. consequences,

  267. they can even

  268. be long term.

  269. The big one

  270. here being

  271. there is now

  272. this child,

  273. Ishmael.

  274. and though

  275. every child

  276. is a wonderful

  277. gift from God,

  278. he will be

  279. a permanent

  280. reality in

  281. their lives

  282. now.

  283. And that

  284. family dynamic

  285. is going to

  286. be complicated.

  287. And in fact,

  288. this child

  289. is going to

  290. cause trouble

  291. for generations

  292. to come.

  293. Did you see

  294. that in verse

  295. 12?

  296. His hand

  297. will be

  298. against everyone

  299. and everyone's

  300. hand against

  301. him.

  302. And he shall

  303. dwell over

  304. against all

  305. his kinsmen.

  306. This is

  307. anticipating

  308. the friction

  309. between the

  310. Ishmaelites

  311. and the

  312. Israelites.

  313. Now this

  314. isn't saying

  315. that every

  316. child brings

  317. complicated

  318. dynamics.

  319. No, it's

  320. not saying

  321. that.

  322. This chapter

  323. is teaching

  324. that sin

  325. can have

  326. short term

  327. and long

  328. term

  329. consequences.

  330. It causes

  331. all sorts

  332. of mess.

  333. And what

  334. makes it

  335. even messier

  336. is that

  337. there aren't

  338. clear-cut

  339. goodies and

  340. baddies

  341. here.

  342. It's not

  343. sinners or

  344. victims.

  345. It's both.

  346. Sarai

  347. sinned with

  348. this plan

  349. but she

  350. was also

  351. sinned

  352. against

  353. by Hagar.

  354. Abram

  355. was sinned

  356. against,

  357. tempted by

  358. Sarai,

  359. but he

  360. also sinned

  361. by listening

  362. to her.

  363. Hagar

  364. was used.

  365. She was

  366. treated

  367. harshly

  368. but she

  369. also sinned

  370. against

  371. Sarai.

  372. She

  373. sparked

  374. this

  375. rivalry.

  376. So not

  377. only are

  378. the

  379. consequences

  380. messy

  381. but also

  382. the

  383. situations

  384. that

  385. start

  386. them.

  387. And this

  388. is usually

  389. the case

  390. in the

  391. mess of

  392. our lives.

  393. We are

  394. very tempted

  395. to think

  396. we are

  397. only

  398. victims,

  399. never the

  400. sinner.

  401. Now there

  402. are cases

  403. victims of

  404. that.

  405. Don't get

  406. me wrong,

  407. we don't

  408. want to

  409. ignore

  410. real victims

  411. of sin

  412. but we're

  413. so easily

  414. tempted to

  415. think we

  416. are only

  417. victims,

  418. never the

  419. sinner.

  420. But most

  421. of the time

  422. it's messy,

  423. it's both.

  424. And it

  425. takes real

  426. humility to

  427. recognise that

  428. and to see

  429. where we

  430. have sinned

  431. and in all

  432. the mess

  433. of it,

  434. if we have

  435. been sinned

  436. against,

  437. are we

  438. responding

  439. sinfully.

  440. And this

  441. chapter,

  442. it's getting

  443. us to

  444. ask ourselves

  445. that.

  446. It is here

  447. to warn

  448. us of the

  449. mess,

  450. sinking

  451. cause when

  452. we doubt

  453. God and

  454. take things

  455. into our

  456. own hands.

  457. And let's

  458. not miss

  459. this.

  460. This is all

  461. happening in

  462. the church.

  463. In this

  464. chapter,

  465. we aren't

  466. in the

  467. pagan nations.

  468. We aren't

  469. following the

  470. lives of

  471. unbelievers.

  472. No,

  473. this is the

  474. very heart

  475. of God's

  476. people.

  477. At this

  478. point,

  479. the promise

  480. exists nowhere

  481. else in the

  482. world.

  483. It is only

  484. here in

  485. this family

  486. and what

  487. does it

  488. look like?

  489. An

  490. absolute

  491. mess.

  492. And this

  493. shows us

  494. what life

  495. in the

  496. church can

  497. be like.

  498. It's a

  499. rollercoaster.

  500. If you are

  501. here thinking

  502. that Christians

  503. are just

  504. these glossy

  505. people with

  506. picture-perfect

  507. lives,

  508. that simply

  509. isn't the

  510. reality.

  511. This side

  512. of heaven,

  513. life in the

  514. church is

  515. messy,

  516. full of

  517. complexities

  518. and difficult

  519. family dynamics

  520. and hurt

  521. and sin

  522. and all its

  523. consequences.

  524. And so

  525. there will be

  526. many here

  527. tonight who

  528. are going

  529. through that

  530. right now.

  531. You may be

  532. in that mess.

  533. You took

  534. things into

  535. your own

  536. hands and

  537. it's all

  538. gone wrong

  539. and it

  540. just seems

  541. unfixable.

  542. You don't

  543. know where

  544. to turn

  545. and you

  546. still don't

  547. see any

  548. light at

  549. the end

  550. of the

  551. tunnel.

  552. Well if

  553. that is

  554. you and

  555. it's all

  556. of us

  557. really,

  558. then we

  559. need to

  560. see how

  561. God responds

  562. to all

  563. this mess.

  564. In his

  565. grace and

  566. in his

  567. gentleness,

  568. God sees

  569. us.

  570. And this

  571. is the

  572. second and

  573. the final

  574. thing I

  575. want us to

  576. see tonight,

  577. the grace

  578. when God

  579. sees us,

  580. the grace

  581. when God

  582. sees us.

  583. At this

  584. point,

  585. we're really

  586. at the

  587. bottom of

  588. the roller

  589. coaster.

  590. Hagar is

  591. pregnant and

  592. vulnerable and

  593. alone,

  594. abandoned,

  595. nowhere to

  596. turn,

  597. lost in the

  598. mess,

  599. literally lost

  600. in the

  601. wilderness

  602. right now,

  603. and now

  604. very far

  605. from God

  606. and his

  607. promises.

  608. It's

  609. rock

  610. bottom.

  611. But then

  612. we hear

  613. these very

  614. beautiful

  615. words in

  616. verse 7.

  617. The angel

  618. of the

  619. Lord found

  620. her by a

  621. spring of

  622. water in

  623. the wilderness.

  624. A broken

  625. woman,

  626. nowhere to

  627. turn,

  628. a guilty

  629. woman whom

  630. the Lord

  631. didn't need

  632. to take

  633. notice of,

  634. but the

  635. Lord found

  636. her.

  637. Just like

  638. the lost

  639. sheep,

  640. isn't it?

  641. And I

  642. think it's

  643. just such a

  644. lovely phrase

  645. that captures

  646. how God

  647. deals with

  648. us.

  649. He finds

  650. us when

  651. we're lost

  652. in the

  653. mess.

  654. And when

  655. he does,

  656. he begins

  657. to untangle

  658. it by

  659. speaking.

  660. Do you

  661. see,

  662. God speaks

  663. the exact

  664. words she

  665. needs.

  666. He actually

  667. speaks the

  668. gospel here.

  669. He first

  670. of all

  671. addresses her

  672. sin.

  673. He asks

  674. verse 8,

  675. where have

  676. you come

  677. from?

  678. And where

  679. are you

  680. going?

  681. He forces

  682. Hagar to

  683. reflect on

  684. her life,

  685. on her

  686. choices.

  687. And then

  688. God calls

  689. her back.

  690. Return to

  691. your mistress

  692. and submit

  693. to her.

  694. Hagar,

  695. repent.

  696. Return to

  697. the people of

  698. God,

  699. come back

  700. to salvation.

  701. And then

  702. he promises

  703. to bless

  704. Hagar,

  705. verse 10.

  706. I will

  707. surely

  708. multiply your

  709. offspring so

  710. that they

  711. cannot be

  712. numbered for

  713. multitude.

  714. They're not

  715. easy words to

  716. hear,

  717. but they are

  718. such good

  719. words.

  720. And it's

  721. what God

  722. says to

  723. everyone who

  724. doubts and

  725. wanders and

  726. has taken

  727. life into

  728. their own

  729. hands.

  730. In our

  731. mess,

  732. God says,

  733. repent.

  734. Return to

  735. my people,

  736. and I will

  737. bless you

  738. even more.

  739. God

  740. brings her

  741. back.

  742. She

  743. returns to

  744. the promise

  745. to God's

  746. people.

  747. God

  748. begins even

  749. to repair

  750. the

  751. relationships.

  752. She goes

  753. back to

  754. Sarai,

  755. but God

  756. never holds

  757. her sin

  758. against her.

  759. He doesn't

  760. bring it

  761. up.

  762. She doesn't

  763. have to

  764. make up

  765. for it.

  766. She doesn't

  767. miss out

  768. on any

  769. blessing.

  770. God is

  771. just so

  772. gentle and

  773. kind, and

  774. he just

  775. safely brings

  776. Hagar back

  777. into the

  778. promise.

  779. The

  780. rollercoaster

  781. dips, but

  782. he never

  783. lets it

  784. collapse.

  785. And he

  786. only just

  787. blesses her

  788. even more.

  789. It's like God

  790. is saying

  791. here, I

  792. know what

  793. you've done.

  794. I know

  795. what you're

  796. going through.

  797. Now come

  798. back.

  799. Let me

  800. fix this

  801. mess, and

  802. let me

  803. just love

  804. you even

  805. more.

  806. We have

  807. such a

  808. generous

  809. God.

  810. And Hagar

  811. realizes that,

  812. verse 13.

  813. So she

  814. called the

  815. name of

  816. the Lord

  817. who spoke

  818. to her.

  819. You are

  820. a God

  821. of seeing.

  822. For she

  823. said,

  824. truly here

  825. I have

  826. seen him

  827. who looks

  828. after me.

  829. And again

  830. it's such

  831. beautiful

  832. language.

  833. God is

  834. the one

  835. who sees

  836. me in

  837. my mess.

  838. when you

  839. have no

  840. hope and

  841. nowhere to

  842. turn, and

  843. you've made

  844. a mess of

  845. everything, God

  846. sees you.

  847. He doesn't

  848. forget, he

  849. doesn't

  850. abandon, no, he

  851. sees.

  852. And he

  853. looks after

  854. you.

  855. Just like

  856. Hagar, he

  857. comes to

  858. heal and

  859. restore, to

  860. bring us

  861. back and to

  862. transform the

  863. mess.

  864. And how?

  865. through

  866. forgiveness in

  867. his son.

  868. Whatever

  869. mess you

  870. might be in

  871. right now,

  872. however much

  873. you have

  874. doubted God,

  875. however far

  876. you have

  877. wandered,

  878. whatever Eden

  879. you have been

  880. trying to

  881. build for

  882. yourself, if

  883. you will

  884. return to

  885. the Lord

  886. now, and

  887. come to

  888. the Lord

  889. Jesus who

  890. has come

  891. to find

  892. the lost,

  893. when you

  894. return, God

  895. will only

  896. look after

  897. you.

  898. And there

  899. will be

  900. complete

  901. forgiveness.

  902. Whatever

  903. you've done,

  904. he won't

  905. hold it

  906. against you,

  907. he doesn't

  908. tell you to

  909. pay for it,

  910. he doesn't

  911. hold back

  912. any blessing,

  913. no, he

  914. forgives.

  915. And his

  916. grace is

  917. always there to

  918. restore the

  919. mess of our

  920. lives, to

  921. begin to

  922. heal the

  923. pain of

  924. our failures.

  925. He helps

  926. us forgive

  927. others.

  928. He helps

  929. us see where

  930. we have sinned

  931. in all this

  932. mess.

  933. And he

  934. promises to

  935. bless us

  936. even more,

  937. to finally

  938. one day

  939. restore the

  940. mess completely

  941. and make

  942. all things

  943. new.

  944. There really

  945. is a light

  946. at the end

  947. of the tunnel.

  948. And so the

  949. rollercoaster may

  950. dip, but with

  951. the Lord Jesus

  952. it never

  953. collapses, he

  954. looks after

  955. you.

  956. In our ruined

  957. lives, in our

  958. affliction, we

  959. can't take

  960. things into our

  961. own hands

  962. anymore.

  963. And so

  964. what else

  965. is there?

  966. There is

  967. the grace

  968. of God.

  969. But we

  970. must realise,

  971. though God

  972. does find

  973. and forgive

  974. us, this

  975. doesn't mean

  976. the consequences

  977. will go away

  978. in this life.

  979. Ishmael

  980. doesn't go

  981. away, does

  982. he?

  983. Sarai still

  984. had to live

  985. with Hagar.

  986. these events

  987. couldn't be

  988. undone, the

  989. consequences

  990. don't disappear.

  991. And so

  992. likewise, we

  993. may still

  994. live with

  995. the consequences

  996. of our sin.

  997. Maybe for

  998. the rest of

  999. our lives.

  1000. The memories

  1001. may still

  1002. remain, the

  1003. scars never

  1004. completely fade

  1005. this side of

  1006. heaven.

  1007. God doesn't

  1008. make our

  1009. mess disappear,

  1010. tear, but

  1011. he does

  1012. atone for

  1013. it.

  1014. And whatever

  1015. mess is

  1016. still there,

  1017. he gives

  1018. it a new

  1019. meaning in

  1020. your life.

  1021. Look at

  1022. verse 11.

  1023. Look what

  1024. God says

  1025. to call

  1026. Hagar's

  1027. child.

  1028. You shall

  1029. call his

  1030. name Ishmael

  1031. because the

  1032. Lord has

  1033. listened to

  1034. your reflection.

  1035. The name

  1036. Ishmael

  1037. literally means

  1038. God hears.

  1039. And look

  1040. what the

  1041. well was

  1042. called,

  1043. verse 14.

  1044. Be'er

  1045. lehi roi,

  1046. which literally

  1047. means well

  1048. of the

  1049. living one

  1050. who sees.

  1051. These could

  1052. be painful

  1053. reminders of

  1054. sin.

  1055. Ishmael

  1056. could be a

  1057. walking reminder

  1058. of Sarai's

  1059. doubts and

  1060. Abraham's

  1061. failures.

  1062. This well

  1063. could be a

  1064. haunting

  1065. reminder of

  1066. Hagar's

  1067. sin and the

  1068. low point of

  1069. her life.

  1070. But God

  1071. finds her,

  1072. forgives her,

  1073. and gives a

  1074. new meaning

  1075. to these

  1076. things.

  1077. With this

  1078. new name,

  1079. Ishmael is

  1080. now a

  1081. constant reminder,

  1082. a monument

  1083. of God's

  1084. grace.

  1085. Every time

  1086. they see

  1087. him and

  1088. say his

  1089. name, it

  1090. is not

  1091. their sin

  1092. God brings

  1093. up, it's

  1094. his grace.

  1095. They look

  1096. back at

  1097. this mess

  1098. and now

  1099. they can

  1100. just know

  1101. God hears

  1102. me in my

  1103. trouble.

  1104. And if

  1105. Hagar

  1106. were to

  1107. ever walk

  1108. past that

  1109. well again,

  1110. it could

  1111. have been a

  1112. painful monument

  1113. for her.

  1114. But now

  1115. she can

  1116. walk past

  1117. and God

  1118. tells her,

  1119. I don't

  1120. want you

  1121. to remember

  1122. your sin.

  1123. I want

  1124. you to

  1125. remember

  1126. God

  1127. sees me.

  1128. And that's

  1129. what God

  1130. has done

  1131. with the

  1132. monuments

  1133. of our

  1134. sin.

  1135. those scars,

  1136. those

  1137. consequences,

  1138. those

  1139. memories,

  1140. all that

  1141. mess,

  1142. the Lord

  1143. Jesus has

  1144. taken them

  1145. and not

  1146. only paid

  1147. for them

  1148. but transformed

  1149. them and

  1150. given them

  1151. a new

  1152. meaning,

  1153. a new

  1154. name.

  1155. They are

  1156. no longer

  1157. reminders of

  1158. our sins

  1159. and failures

  1160. but they

  1161. are now

  1162. monuments

  1163. of God's

  1164. grace to

  1165. you.

  1166. Those

  1167. scars

  1168. are

  1169. monuments

  1170. that God

  1171. rescued me

  1172. from that

  1173. life.

  1174. Your

  1175. past

  1176. is now

  1177. a monument

  1178. declaring

  1179. God

  1180. sees me

  1181. even though

  1182. I didn't

  1183. see him.

  1184. Our

  1185. foolish

  1186. choices

  1187. are now

  1188. monuments

  1189. that show

  1190. God

  1191. looks after

  1192. me even

  1193. when I

  1194. didn't

  1195. care about

  1196. him.

  1197. And the

  1198. Lord

  1199. Jesus

  1200. has washed

  1201. all my

  1202. guilt

  1203. away.

  1204. And so

  1205. if things

  1206. of your

  1207. past

  1208. still haunt

  1209. you,

  1210. if like

  1211. Hagar

  1212. you walk

  1213. past a

  1214. well that

  1215. could remind

  1216. you of

  1217. your failures,

  1218. let it

  1219. now remind

  1220. you of

  1221. God's

  1222. grace.

  1223. It could

  1224. overwhelm

  1225. us with

  1226. regret and

  1227. despair but

  1228. God wants

  1229. it to drive

  1230. you to

  1231. praise.

  1232. Praise for

  1233. his mercy

  1234. and grace.

  1235. And whatever

  1236. mess we might

  1237. be in right

  1238. now and it

  1239. feels like God

  1240. is distant,

  1241. like he

  1242. doesn't see,

  1243. trust him,

  1244. wait for

  1245. him,

  1246. hold to

  1247. his promises

  1248. right now

  1249. and never

  1250. forget you

  1251. may not

  1252. see him but

  1253. God sees

  1254. you.

  1255. And so

  1256. we can go

  1257. into this

  1258. week saying

  1259. those beautiful

  1260. words,

  1261. God sees

  1262. me and

  1263. God always

  1264. looks after

  1265. me.

  1266. Let's

  1267. pray.

  1268. Amen.
