  1. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow Because

  2. He lives, all fear is gone Because I know He

  3. holds the future because he lives. The Resurrection

  4. Life Sunday Sermon is brought to you by Resurrection

  5. Life Church in Apex, North Carolina, a congregation

  6. of the Presbyterian Church in America. Resurrection

  7. Life Church is pastored by Dr. Mark Kadesh. And

  8. this week we continue our current series on the

  9. book of Hebrews called From Shadow to Substance.

  10. Now, here's Pastor Mark. Last week we talked

  11. about how the author of Hebrews is preaching

  12. on a text, Psalm 95, right? I'm a pastor in 2026

  13. preaching about a sermon that's preaching on

  14. Psalm 95. It gets a little bit convoluted, but

  15. I want to straighten that out because Psalm 95

  16. comes back again and again and again three different

  17. times in our passage. It's like this commentary,

  18. this preaching on Psalm 95 just continues. You're

  19. going to see it pop up. So I'm going to read

  20. for us Hebrews 4, 1 through 12, or 1 through

  21. 13. And with what I just said in mind, hear the

  22. word of the Lord. It says this, Therefore, while

  23. the promise of entering his rest still stands,

  24. let us fear, lest any of you should seem to have

  25. failed to reach it. For good news came to us

  26. just as it did to them. The them there is the

  27. wilderness generation, and we're going to talk

  28. about that. But the message they heard did not

  29. benefit them, because they were not united by

  30. faith with those who listened. And we're going

  31. to talk about who those people are, the ones

  32. who listened. For we who have believed enter

  33. that rest, as he has said. And this is Psalm

  34. 95 again. As I swore my wrath, they shall not

  35. enter my rest. Although his works were finished

  36. from the foundation of the world, for he has

  37. somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way,

  38. and God rested on the seventh day from all his

  39. works. And again in this passage he said, again

  40. another quote from Psalm 95, they shall not enter

  41. my rest. That is, the wilderness generation will

  42. not enter my rest. Verse 6, since therefore it

  43. remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly

  44. received the good news fail to enter because

  45. of disobedience, again he appoints a certain

  46. day, today, saying through David, so long afterwards,

  47. in the words already quoted from Psalm 95, today

  48. if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

  49. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would

  50. not have spoken of another day later on. So then

  51. there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of

  52. God. For whoever has entered God's rest has also

  53. rested from his works as God did from his. Let

  54. us therefore strive to enter that rest so that

  55. no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  56. So that's verse 1 through 11 is what we're going

  57. to focus on, but I'm going to repeat Hebrews

  58. 4, 12 to 13 here. For the word of God is living

  59. and active, sharper than any two -edged sword,

  60. piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,

  61. of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts

  62. and intentions of the heart. And no creature

  63. is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and

  64. exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give

  65. account. So, brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ,

  66. I've discovered about myself, I was thinking

  67. this past week about crossing the finish line.

  68. Couldn't really settle on a title this week.

  69. It was originally like Back to the Future, and

  70. then it was Crossing the Finish Line, which is

  71. on the literary slide. But I changed it to Crossing

  72. into Glory, I think. You'll see in a second,

  73. whether or not or not. But it's the whole point

  74. of... crossing over from one place of racing

  75. or running into the next. And so I noticed, as

  76. I was thinking about this, all these different

  77. movies kind of came to my mind. As some of you

  78. know, I'm a big Cars fan. I love that movie.

  79. I love Life is a Highway. That's a great song

  80. written by a Canadian, I might add. Great movie,

  81. right? Cars, if you've seen it. I don't want

  82. to give anything away. I'll just say it's a great

  83. movie. There's Chariots of Fire. Some of you

  84. may like Chariots of Fire. I remember watching

  85. that movie as a kid and seeing Eric Little crossing

  86. the finish line. Or does he? I don't want to

  87. give it away. And so you have that movie. You

  88. have one of my favorite, favorite movies. I just

  89. recently showed the kids. They weren't nearly

  90. as impressed as I was. But it's Francis Ford

  91. Coppola's Black Stallion. Anybody? So good. Beautifully

  92. done. Anyway, so this is a beautiful story of

  93. a horse and his boy and racing. And it's this,

  94. what I want to capture for us is just the joy

  95. of crossing over a line and the celebration that

  96. exists because of that. You know, there's so

  97. much stuff going on after the celebration of

  98. winning. Whether you're crossing the finish line

  99. on a horse, or you're finishing the finish line

  100. in a car, or crossing the finish line as a car,

  101. there's celebration. And today we're going to

  102. talk about the celebration that awaits those

  103. who trust Jesus to the end. To the end. We're

  104. going to focus on three things here. There we

  105. go. Crossing into glory. Point one is road to

  106. rest. Then we're going to deal with two points

  107. of application. Forge ahead and avoid failure.

  108. And forge ahead and avoid falling. So that's

  109. what we're going to talk about. For those of

  110. you who really followed along well with this

  111. passage, some of you may be sitting there going...

  112. okay, how is this all going to work? There's

  113. a whole lot of information. Yes, there's a whole

  114. lot of information, but we're going to plow through.

  115. And the first point really is a survey of this

  116. passage. And we're going to break it down into

  117. three parts. Okay. This first part into three,

  118. bring your ticket to rest. Rest begins and ends

  119. with God and the destination is Sabbath land.

  120. So let's jump into this passage because there's

  121. a lot of meat here. Hebrews 4, verse 2 and 3

    Hebrews 4:2

  122. says this. For good news came to us just as it

  123. did to them. That is the wilderness generation.

  124. But the message they heard did not benefit them

  125. because they were not united by faith with those

  126. who listened. For we who have believed enter

  127. that rest. As he said, as I swore my wrath, they

  128. shall not enter my rest. Now the word for good

  129. news there is the straight up word gospel, good

  130. news. And so the wilderness generation did not

  131. fuse together faith and these people who were

  132. crossing over into the land of rest. So the good

  133. news was that they had this promised land to

  134. go to, but faith was their ticket to get in.

  135. And so that's why the focus is like bring your

  136. ticket to rest. Your ticket is faith. You got

  137. to believe. You got to believe to get in. So

  138. how did the original people do it? Well, Caleb

  139. and Joshua, they were among the spies who entered

  140. into the promised land to sneak around to see

  141. whether or not they could take over this land.

  142. totally, totally take over this land with no

  143. problem. So you had this whole group of spies.

  144. All of them said, no, not a chance. There's giants

  145. over there. And then Joshua and Caleb are like,

  146. no, no, no, we can do this. We can do this. In

  147. fact, they say, the land which we pass through

  148. it to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.

  149. If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us

  150. into this land. and give it to us. A land flows

  151. with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against

  152. the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land,

  153. for they are bread to us. They're bread to us.

  154. We can just take it. I want to show you a picture.

  155. Some of you may recognize this from last week

  156. a little bit, but this is the road to rest for

  157. the wilderness generation. This is a 40 -year

  158. journey. And the land of rest, you can see the

  159. promised land there, that's up over there, that

  160. oval shape. And you'll notice that they just

  161. kind of skirt around the whole thing. They spend,

  162. as we talked about last week, 38 years in one

  163. spot where that arrow is. 38 years they spend

  164. there. Takes them about a year to get there,

  165. and then they go all the way around to the finish

  166. line there, right at the edge, and then they

  167. spend one more year, and that's the book of Deuteronomy.

  168. Where Moses is preaching to them and preparing

  169. for them to cross into this land. So this whole

  170. wilderness generation did not couple faith with

  171. those who had faith to go into the land. They

  172. weren't part of that group. They weren't part

  173. of the believing group. Take it into the land

  174. was faith. And so for us, our faith is different.

  175. The good news that we need to believe in is different

  176. than the good news that was talked about here.

  177. Many centuries earlier. The good news for us

  178. is written down in Hebrews 1 .3. What does it

  179. say? It says, Jesus is the radiance of the glory

  180. of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and

  181. he upholds the universe. By the word of his power

  182. and making purification for sin, he sat down

  183. at the right hand of the majesty on high. This

  184. is Jesus. This is our good news. Hebrews 2 .9

  185. says this, Jesus was crowned with glory and honor,

  186. so he's a king, because of the suffering of death,

  187. so that by the grace of God, he might taste death

  188. for everyone. That's the gospel. That's our good

  189. news. Hebrews 2 .17, therefore, he had to be

  190. made like his brothers in every respect so that

  191. he might become a merciful and faithful high

  192. priest in the service of God to make propitiation

  193. for the sins of the people. This is our gospel,

  194. and this is our ticket into glory. And so this

  195. author so far is using this road to rest as a

  196. way to understand, okay, you are the now, the

  197. new wilderness generation. And to get into glory,

  198. you need to have faith. Next one. Rest begins

  199. and ends with God. So after our author is talking

  200. about all this. conjuring up all this Old Testament

  201. imagery. We are now the church, the new wilderness

  202. generation. What does it say? Although his works

  203. were finished from the foundation of the world,

  204. verse 3, for he had somewhere spoken of the seventh

  205. day in this way, and God rested on the seventh

  206. day from all his works. And again, in this passage,

  207. he said, they shall not enter my rest. What is

  208. going on? on here. This is Genesis 2 -2. Can't

  209. we just be good enough with just staying with

  210. one Old Testament text? Let's just stay in Psalm

  211. 95, please. But no, he's now pulling us all the

  212. way to Genesis. And so I showed you geography.

  213. Now I want to show you a timeline. This is the

  214. timeline. So now the author is getting us to

  215. see that when God created everything, he created

  216. rest on the seventh day. This is the destination

  217. for us. He creates rest as he enters his throne

  218. room and he's done all his good works. He's created

  219. all good things. And on the sixth day he said,

  220. this is very good after making humanity. So God

  221. does his good works and then he rests. And that

  222. is an eternal rest for him. In his throne room

  223. where Jesus is right now. And so what he's trying

  224. to get us to see is God inaugurated rest from

  225. the very, very beginning. And then you have this

  226. exodus, right? Which the author of Hebrews gets

  227. into, which we've talked about in the past. And

  228. then we get this 40 -year road to rest. Wilderness

  229. generation outside of the promised land. They're

  230. not entering into the rest God promised. This

  231. promise that was already in Genesis 2 -2. It's

  232. right here for them now, but they're going all

  233. the way around. But for us, we have a new good

  234. news. We're called to do good works like God

  235. so that we could enter into rest. That's the

  236. logic here. And there's a destination still.

  237. And we're going to get now to verse 6. And verse

  238. 6 to 10. Again, thick stuff, but bear with me.

  239. Please follow along. Since therefore it remains

  240. for some to enter it, and those who formerly

  241. received the good news failed to enter because

  242. of disobedience, again he points a certain day

  243. today, saying through David so long afterward.

  244. In the words already quoted, today if you hear

  245. his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if

  246. Joshua had given them rest, God would not have

  247. spoken of another day later on. So then there

  248. remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

  249. For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested

  250. from his works as God did from his. So we have

  251. here a destination that's described for us. I'm

  252. going to call it with tongue in cheek, Sabbath

  253. Restland. Okay, Sabbath Restland. This is the

  254. destination now. God created it in Genesis 2

  255. -2, this eternal rest. And then what happens,

  256. though, is you'll notice that the author is trying

  257. to think through, okay, well, if you're preaching

  258. and you say, they never entered the rest, they

  259. never entered the rest, and people in the back

  260. of the room are saying, yeah, but Joseph got

  261. them in. Joseph got them there. What's the big

  262. deal? They got in eventually. Why do we have

  263. to have all this? Hard work to do outside the

  264. land. Because we're going to eventually get in

  265. anyway. And the author cuts them off of the pass.

  266. Starts yelling at the people in the back. No,

  267. no, no. I saw that. Stop talking about Joshua.

  268. Because Joshua got them in there. Yes. But if

  269. that was the final destination. Why would King

  270. David come centuries later? In Psalm 95. And

  271. say there's a rest yet to come. And so we have

  272. this timeline. Again, I'm going to expand the

  273. timeline now. Where we have this crossing over

  274. the Jordan. Which happens, right? The wilderness

  275. generation all die. Except for Joshua. And except

  276. for Caleb. Right? Even Moses couldn't get in.

  277. And so they go into the promised land. Into this

  278. rest land. Right? They made it. But then the

  279. author goes, no, no, no, but wait. King David,

  280. King David says in Psalm 95, there's a rest still

  281. waiting. There's a rest still waiting. Joshua

  282. brought them into the land of rest, but it was

  283. not the final resting place. And it was not the

  284. ultimate resting place. And so the author is

  285. comparing two types of rest places. One is geographical,

  286. temporary, geographically lateral, somewhat precarious.

  287. It's maintained based on the people's holiness.

  288. But Sabbath Restland is eternal, started at the

  289. very beginning of time. It's spiritual. It's

  290. geographically vertical, it's permanent, and

  291. it's based on God's holiness, not ours. There's

  292. a play on words here, a couple things that are

  293. important to note. Joshua and Jesus are the same

  294. word when you read it in the original language.

  295. And so the author is using a play on words here

  296. with two types of leaders. The one that's the

  297. temporary one named Jesus, and the other one

  298. that's the eternal one named Jesus. But one is

  299. much, much greater. Jesus is much, much greater

  300. and superior than Joshua. Another thing to note

  301. is that Sabbath Restland is not your typical

  302. word for Sabbath. So Sabbath was referred to

  303. as the seventh day. Sabbath Restland, when you

  304. see the word Sabbath rest in the text, it's one

  305. word and it's a technical word. And it's a word

  306. that means what one experiences when one enters

  307. Sabbath. It's the celebration. It's the festivities.

  308. It's the worship. It's the connection with friends

  309. and family. It's the joy. It's what we're doing

  310. here. It's the celebration of the resurrected

  311. Lord that we get to taste a little bit here,

  312. but in its fullness and ultimateness to come

  313. in glory. And so when he's talking about Sabbath

  314. Restland, you know, that land is the new heaven

  315. and the new earth. That's where we're headed.

  316. And it's going to be a place of celebration.

  317. It's going to be amazing. No more tears. No more

  318. disease. No more weariness. No more hard work.

  319. The way it was defined in the Old Testament.

  320. The work that we get to do will be life -giving.

  321. It will be fulfilling to us. We'll be able to

  322. Travel. We'll be able to eat sushi every day.

  323. These are the kinds of things that we get to

  324. look forward to. It's a daily congratulation

  325. to each other. You made it. You made it across

  326. the line. You made it to glory. Way to go. It's

  327. Jesus saying to us individually, well done, good

  328. and faithful servant. You've made it to my father's

  329. rest. To the place I have called you since the

  330. very foundation of the world. It's the place

  331. where the battle is over. That's where we get

  332. to look forward to, folks. So that, in a nutshell,

  333. I've got way too many notes here, is what we're

  334. talking about, what the author's trying to get

  335. us to see. With both geography, where it moves

  336. from lateral to vertical, but also time -wise,

  337. the rest that started there, beginning, something

  338. we get to look forward to. He's drawn, and he's

  339. using Old Testament imagery to try to get us

  340. to see the trajectory of what we get to look

  341. forward to. But, now the challenge is, what do

  342. we do from now until we cross the finish line?

  343. What do we do? Well, two things. You'll notice

  344. that verse 1 and verse 11, kind of flank this

  345. passage with command verbs. And so verse 1 and

  346. verse 11 are kind of sandwich all this really

  347. important stuff that's happening in the middle.

  348. So we dealt with all the theology stuff, but

  349. now what does that mean for us? Well, the first

  350. thing it means is that, what it says here, therefore,

  351. while the promise of entering his rest still

  352. stands, let us fear. Lest any of you should seem

  353. to have failed to reach it. So this kind of fear

  354. is like a seriousness, like we got good work

  355. to do and we got to make sure we do it well.

  356. Like it's taking the journey to rest, our journey

  357. to rest as the church, as the new wilderness

  358. generation, we are called to fear the fact that

  359. others may be falling behind. So it's not like,

  360. oh, I'm scared for myself. No, it's like, I'm

  361. worried for the people around me. To making sure

  362. that they're going on this race with me. We're

  363. not going to leave any man behind. Last week

  364. I quoted Anna Knowles' professor, Dr. James Bibsa.

  365. a professor at Grove City, and I want to quote

  366. it again because I think it's so important. It's

  367. kind of a theme that's running throughout this

  368. book. This is a word. He was actually referring

  369. to a different verse, but I'm going to make it

  370. apply to this verse as well. This is a word against

  371. those who want to practice hermit Christianity.

  372. This verb. We've got to worry about others to

  373. make sure that they don't fall away. Like it's

  374. a little ironic that on Wednesday we're going

  375. to talk about how to handle worry. It's not that

  376. kind of worry. We got to be concerned and take

  377. seriously going on this journey together. This

  378. is a team sport. This is doing things so that

  379. we're not making sure any part of the house is

  380. not getting built into the house. And so the

  381. challenge is like don't, we can't do this ourselves.

  382. To not be lazy. And we can't get comfortable.

  383. We're a wilderness generation. It's uncomfortable

  384. in the wilderness. So don't pursue comfortability

  385. in us. We gotta do this together. And we gotta

  386. make sure we're caring for other people. So a

  387. few questions before we get to our second application.

  388. Who may be around you in your life who you have

  389. a sense is failing to reach the finish line?

  390. Take a moment. Think about it. Who may be falling

  391. behind? Who may be going through struggle? Like

  392. who may be someone who's struggling and was a

  393. super strong Christian at one point in time and

  394. you could just sense them like the priority of

  395. the relationship with the Lord is sort of like

  396. decoupling from them. The unity that you felt

  397. with them with faith is sort of not there anymore.

  398. Who is that person? Are you praying for that

  399. person? Are you thinking about what they're up

  400. to? Are you inviting them into your home? Are

  401. you reaching out to them and sending them a text

  402. and say, hey, I've been thinking about you. How

  403. are you doing? Perhaps you are one of those people.

  404. And you are feeling like, man, my faith is on

  405. the rocks. I want to encourage you to pursue

  406. someone in your life who could help you and who

  407. can mentor you and who can ask you the hard questions.

  408. Inviting them into this faith journey and saying,

  409. I'm struggling. I don't know. doubting, whatever

  410. the case may be. If that is you, we want to help.

  411. We do. And I'm not just talking like on an official

  412. basis. Like with elders and deacons, obviously

  413. we're here and we want to help you and support

  414. you. But maybe it's just someone who's just across

  415. the aisle who you just know and trust and cares

  416. for you. Take up that person. Take that person

  417. up. on some type of journey with you. So that

  418. you're not going on this wilderness journey alone.

  419. So that's the first application point. The second

  420. one is in verse 11. Forge ahead to avoid falling.

  421. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest so

  422. that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  423. I find it so ironic, you know, in a sermon when

  424. I'm talking about celebration and joy and rest,

  425. that we get these two verbs that are nothing

  426. about resting. It's all about forging and pushing

  427. and prodding and getting through. It's because

  428. we are the church, this new wilderness generation

  429. called to hard work. Like the Lord worked for

  430. six days and rested, our rest is coming. It's

  431. just there, but it's going to be ultimately experienced

  432. one day in Christ. Along the way, we've got to

  433. strive. This word for strive is originally used

  434. as a word for speedy. We've got to go. We've

  435. got to go hard. We've got to go fast. We've got

  436. to go. We've got to go together. We've got to

  437. strive. Keep pushing. For the Christian, there

  438. is no quit. And I find it so fascinating that

  439. both verbs are all about making sure that no

  440. one is left behind, whether they're failing or

  441. whether they're falling. We need to be concerned

  442. about them. We need to strive together. This

  443. is a challenge for the Western church. When we

  444. value individualism so much, and my personal

  445. relationship with Jesus, you're not good alone.

  446. You're not going to make it. You need to strive

  447. together. We need to strive together. And so

  448. a few questions. In what areas are you not striving,

  449. but you're sort of lazy or lackadaisical? Are

  450. you lazy with your thoughts? Are you lazy with

  451. your language? The under the breath kind of language.

  452. Lazy with your prejudices that isolates yourself

  453. from people rather than walks alongside them.

  454. Lazy with your judgmentalism, which again isolates

  455. people from you rather than linking and uniting

  456. together in faith. As the wilderness generation

  457. looked inside the land of Canaan, they see bigger

  458. giants and they see idols. Are those distracting

  459. you from the vision that we need to keep on with

  460. Christ? Are you working towards Sabbath Restland

  461. as your destination or other destinations distracting

  462. you and pulling you away? Are you on the borderland?

  463. Not quite there. What sin remains hidden that

  464. shackles you down? These are important things

  465. for us to wrestle through. I want to share a

  466. story that kind of illustrates some of this and

  467. pulls it all together. The importance of running

  468. to the end. Because as I'm going through this

  469. book of Hebrews, it is very clear to me, and

  470. I hope it is to you, that these Roman Christians

  471. are struggling. And this author is not quite

  472. sure whether or not they're getting it to the

  473. finish line. And they're just distracted. They

  474. see persecution coming down the pike. They see

  475. the bigger buildings, the bigger temples. They're

  476. a small little group there in Rome. And will

  477. they make it? So the challenge that he has, and

  478. for us today, make sure we persevere to the end.

  479. And so here's a story about that. In 2016, at

  480. the World Triathlon Competition, There was all

  481. these runners from around the world who came

  482. together. There's two runners from Great Britain

  483. who came in second and third. One runner from

  484. Britain was named Johnny, and he was way ahead

  485. of the pack. So he was en route to becoming first.

  486. And these marathon announcers, they may have

  487. the hardest job on planet Earth. They've got

  488. to call a marathon and make it exciting. They're

  489. all excited, right, because he's nearing the

  490. end, and their job's almost done, so they're

  491. excited. And so they're just calling out a normal

  492. end of the race, and he makes his first, Johnny

  493. makes his first turn, or the last turn towards

  494. the end, and you could just all of a sudden see

  495. he's just starting to lose it, and he's getting

  496. disoriented, and he kind of is hardly able to

  497. walk. And so he actually falls slightly over

  498. to his left, and a water boy kind of holds him

  499. up. to keep him from falling wall to the ground.

  500. And he's just there. He's totally out of it.

  501. And that happens for a while until the second

  502. place guy comes around, makes the turn, and passes

  503. him. And shortly behind the guy who passes Johnny

  504. is another guy named Alistair, his teammate from

  505. Great Britain. And he passes that turn. And the

  506. first thing he does is he stops. Now keep in

  507. mind, the guy in first place, he could have caught

  508. up to. But instead of going to the finish line,

  509. he stops. And he just grabs the arm of the dude.

  510. And just throws it over him. And he starts running

  511. with him. Now he's running fairly solidly. Johnny's

  512. like all over the place. Like literally, like

  513. it looks like he's holding him up to run. And

  514. it's so interesting hearing these commentators

  515. talk. They're like, I don't even know if this

  516. is legal. And the other guy's like, who cares

  517. if it's legal? It's a beautiful moment. In fact,

  518. one of them says, in my 28 years of watching

  519. international triathlons, I have never seen anything

  520. so gripping, so powerful. And you can see it,

  521. the crowd, everybody's going crazy. And so Johnny

  522. is barely making it. Alistair is bringing him.

  523. And what Alistair does, the finish line is right

  524. here. What Alistair does is he just pushes him

  525. over. And then he crosses to get third. It's

  526. a beautiful moment. And one of the reasons why

  527. I want to share this story. Because there are

  528. a lot of stories like this. There's several out

  529. there that are somewhat famous. And so I researched

  530. a bunch that were kind of like, oh man, these

  531. are really inspirational. But what I love about

  532. this story, what I love about this story is that

  533. Alistair and Johnny aren't merely teammates.

  534. They're brothers. They're brothers. Because when

  535. you think about what they're doing is they're

  536. holding up each other, not merely as teammates,

  537. but because they're a family. And it's that kind

  538. of language. You've heard family language this

  539. whole series. Jesus is our older brother. He's

  540. sitting on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

  541. I want to read for you. This absolutely beautiful,

  542. beautiful verse that puts it all together. Hebrews

  543. 2 .10. For it was fitting that he that is Jesus

  544. for whom and by whom all things exist in bringing

  545. many sons to glory should make the founder of

  546. their salvation perfect through suffering. Folks,

  547. we could strive all we want. But at the end of

  548. the day, it's Jesus. It's Jesus who takes our

  549. arms and just throws it, flops it over his, and

  550. he's bringing us to glory. We cannot get into

  551. heaven riding on the coattails of our parents,

  552. but we can get to heaven riding on the coattails

  553. of Jesus Christ. He gives us a promise to rest.

  554. but also a promise of sustenance. He's going

  555. to help us. Excuse me, to the end. And so if

  556. you are heavy laden, if you are weary, if you're

  557. struggling, and when you're told you gotta work

  558. harder and you gotta strive, I wanna give you

  559. a tremendous word of comfort here. Jesus Christ

  560. is with you. When Jesus Christ says, I am with

  561. you always to the very end of the age, it means

  562. he's with us. He's not merely sitting on the

  563. right hand of God the Father Almighty. Through

  564. the power of the Holy Spirit, he is with us,

  565. drawing us to the end. With the image of finishing

  566. triathlon in the back of your mind. I want to

  567. read for you and we're going to conclude with

  568. this. Hebrews 12, 1 -2. Hear these words and

  569. let these words skewer your soul. Therefore,

  570. since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of

  571. witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and

  572. sin which clings so closely and let us run with

  573. endurance the race that is set before us. looking

  574. to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  575. who for the joy that was set before him endured

  576. the cross, despising the shame, and is seated

  577. at the right hand of the throne of God. Let's

  578. pray. Gracious Heavenly Father, we are so humbled

  579. by the power of your word. We thank you, Lord,

  580. for the way it does wield like a sword. And we

  581. pray, Lord, that wherever we find ourselves this

  582. morning, wherever heart condition we may be at

  583. today, we pray that we will rest in the fact

  584. that Jesus is with us all the way to glory. Lord,

  585. we thank you for the cross that he took and endured.

  586. We thank you that he tasted our death, that he

  587. is our propitiation, that this is our gospel,

  588. and to trust in this to the end. Help us to grow

  589. boldly and confidently in our faith. Help us

  590. to strive. Help us to fear. All the while concerned

  591. about those around us, making sure that we leave

  592. no man behind. Thank you for the strength that

  593. we receive through the Holy Spirit. And we thank

  594. you, Lord, for a moment where we get to celebrate

  595. communion. A time where we get to look at a little

  596. piece of bread and a little cup. And they point

  597. us, Lord, to something much greater as well.

  598. They point us towards Jesus' sacrifice for us,

  599. to his blood, to his body, the food we get to

  600. receive, the spiritual nourishment we get. For

  601. the strength of the end, we pray in Christ's

  602. name, amen. Amen. You have been listening to
