  1. Well, today church, we're going to start

  2. uh a three-part series as we look at the

  3. life of Jacob.

  4. And if you don't know anything about

  5. Jacob, well, we'll start to kind of

  6. break down a little bit of who he is.

  7. But just so you know, right from the

  8. get-go, he wasn't a very nice guy.

  9. And his story is like most of our

  10. stories. He's going to move from a

  11. sinner who will always sin to a seeker

  12. who is trying to figure out who God is

  13. to a saint who still struggles and yet

  14. is trusting God with it all as we just

  15. sang.

  16. And so I just want to show you a few of

  17. the key events in the life of Jacob's

  18. story. We're not going to look at all

  19. these really in depth and we're going to

  20. kind of be going through the scriptures

  21. fairly quickly. So, I would encourage

  22. you today or tomorrow, we're going to be

  23. in Genesis 25-28. And I'm going to read

  24. little portions of those stories. But if

  25. you go and read the rest of it yourself,

  26. Genesis is the first book of the Bible,

  27. you'll see kind of all of that story

  28. play out. Uh the deception especially,

  29. and the brokenness.

  30. So, at his birth, just want to go back

  31. for a second, Chen, he grasps his twin

  32. brother, Esau's heel, and at that his

  33. name is given. We'll read that in a

  34. moment.

  35. his birthright. He gains what is his

  36. brothers through deception.

  37. There's this flight in Jacob's ladder

  38. and that's kind of where we'll close

  39. today where he has a vision of a

  40. stairway reaching from heaven down to

  41. earth. And then there's life with his

  42. uncle Laban and there's going to be

  43. trickery and family discord. He's going

  44. to have four marriages. And we're not

  45. saying we're for that in the church,

  46. but this is what I love about the

  47. scriptures.

  48. They don't get rid of those embarrassing

  49. details. They let us see the brokenness

  50. in the story. He's going to have 13

  51. children, one daughter, 12 sons, and

  52. that will come up in a couple weeks.

  53. He's going to wrestle with God, and

  54. that's going to give him a new name. And

  55. that encounter with God is going to

  56. change Jacob forever. And he's going to

  57. become, I'm not going to tell you his

  58. name, but you probably already know it.

  59. which is going to equal a transformation

  60. in his life when God breaks down that

  61. wall between him and God. Then there's

  62. going to be reconciliation with Esau and

  63. that transformation is going to lead to

  64. reunion, forgiveness, and

  65. reconciliation. And finally, in the

  66. story, we're not really going to go into

  67. it, but in Egypt, his children are going

  68. to be there, and there's going to be

  69. family discord. One of the sons is going

  70. to kind of play a trick on his father

  71. and his other brothers.

  72. But in it, we're going to see that the

  73. inherited family traits and curses will

  74. lead to conflict, slavery. There's going

  75. to be a drought in the middle, but God

  76. is going to keep his blessings given

  77. first to Jacob's grandfather, Abraham.

  78. So, that's the overarching story of his

  79. life. Let's kind of start to get into

  80. some of the nittygritty deta details.

  81. So, we pick up in her story, and we'll

  82. go to that scripture in a second. A and

  83. and Jacob isn't born yet, and his

  84. parents are struggling to have a child,

  85. and they don't know what to do with

  86. that. So, in prayer, they turn to God

  87. and God, we don't know what to do with

  88. this. Please help us have a child. And

  89. they're heartbroken, and they're

  90. struggling and they're just like, God,

  91. please meet us in the midst of this. And

  92. so Jacob just so from the beginning

  93. we're going to find out was born at a

  94. prayer and he will be destined to

  95. greatness. And so in Genesis 25, here's

  96. how the story starts to play out. So

  97. Isaac prayed to the Lord. So Isaac is

  98. his dad. Rebecca his is his mother.

  99. Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of

  100. his wife because she was childless. And

  101. the Lord was receptive to his prayer and

  102. his wife Rebecca conceived. But the

  103. children inside her struggle with each

  104. other. So, right from the beginning,

  105. there's going to be this wall between

  106. the two brothers. I wish that was flat

  107. and you couldn't see through it, but you

  108. can.

  109. And she said, "Why is this happening to

  110. me?

  111. Why, my God, why? Why have you forsaken

  112. me?" And so, she went to inquire of the

  113. Lord. And the Lord said to her, "Well,

  114. here's what's going to happen to you,

  115. Rebecca, and to your family. Two nations

  116. are in your womb and two peoples will

  117. come from you and they're going to be

  118. separated. One people will be stronger

  119. than the other just like I'm stronger

  120. than my brothers. I wish my brothers

  121. were watching but I don't think they

  122. watch me online. And the older will

  123. serve the younger.

  124. And so just so we know here. Oh yeah,

  125. you can go go to that. And so when the

  126. time came to give birth, there were

  127. indeed twins in her womb. Yay. Anyone

  128. have twins hair? Oh, I know Michael

  129. does. What a great blessing when they

  130. first come out. And the first one came

  131. out red looking, covered with hair, like

  132. a fur coat. And they named him Esau. If

  133. you've ever seen me without a shirt,

  134. which you won't, maybe I'm Esau.

  135. Okay. After this, his brother came out

  136. grasping

  137. Esau's heel with his hand. So he was

  138. named

  139. >> can't hear you.

  140. >> Jacob.

  141. >> Jacob. And Isaac was 60 years old. Oh my

  142. goodness. I thought I was old at

  143. whatever I am 40. When I was 46 and I

  144. had a baby when they were born.

  145. And so as the story starts to kind of

  146. come AC come along, here's what Jacob's

  147. name means according to um my research

  148. this week. And just so you know, I

  149. preached this series a number of years

  150. ago as well, but it's been changed. So

  151. it can mean suppler or one who holds on,

  152. one who follows with the interpretation

  153. is he's going to try to circumvent,

  154. cheat, deceive and grab was what isn't

  155. his right from the very beginning and

  156. right from the moment of conception.

  157. He is a restless and aggressive spirit.

  158. And yet God knows the gritty details of

  159. who Jacob is. the saint the sinner and

  160. saint to be there's going to be great

  161. blessings that will come but in first

  162. there's going to be intrigue so here's

  163. how the story plays out one day his

  164. older brother Esau comes along and Esau

  165. has been starving and he's hungry

  166. and and he doesn't know what to do with

  167. it and so Jacob who's already this kind

  168. of deceiver says how can I get ahead of

  169. my brother and grab a hold of what is

  170. his or how can I grab my brother's

  171. blessing? He says, "Hey, brother, I

  172. realize you're a little hungry.

  173. I have some food for you." And it's that

  174. age-old what happens next? Cross your

  175. heart and hope to die. Stick a needle in

  176. your eye. Pinky swear.

  177. And this is what's starting to go on.

  178. He's playing his brother. If you want to

  179. put up the next uh screen, verse 31. So

  180. all right, Jacob replied, betrayed me

  181. your rights as a firstborn son. Look,

  182. I'm dying of starvation.

  183. Maybe he looks like me. He probably

  184. does. He's not dying of starvation.

  185. Well, what good is my birthright to me

  186. now? Esau says. But Jacob said, first

  187. you must swear,

  188. stick a needle in my eye, that your

  189. birthright is mine. And so Esau swore an

  190. oath thereby selling all his rights as

  191. the force first firstborn to his brother

  192. Jacob. And then Jacob gave Esau some

  193. bread and lentil stew. Esau ate the meal

  194. then got up and left. And he showed

  195. contempt for his rights as the firstborn

  196. son. And essentially Esau is like, "Who

  197. cares?

  198. Just take it. I just want some bread. I

  199. just want some stew." And if you've ever

  200. had warm stew and hearty stew, man,

  201. that's hard to pass up.

  202. And Esau, who's very resourceful, who's

  203. very independent,

  204. sells his birthight

  205. for a stew. Can you imagine?

  206. Which starts to sew the seeds of

  207. contempt

  208. and a wall starts to be built between

  209. the brothers.

  210. Thank you, Mark Cipher, for this analogy

  211. that you gave a while ago.

  212. And yet, Jacob wants more. He's a little

  213. greedy. And so, we read this in Genesis

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  214. chapter 27. Just so you know, chapter 26

  215. kind of goes back in time. It's back to

  216. the future and kind of takes a look at

  217. Isaac's story. But Isaac said, "Your

  218. brother was here." I encourage you to go

  219. and read the rest of the story. Uh,

  220. Jacob dresses up like his brother,

  221. pretends to sound like his brother, and

  222. he tricks his father. And this is kind

  223. of the fallout of it. And so then when

  224. Esau comes in from the field, Isaac

  225. said, "Your brother was here, and he

  226. tricked me. He has taken away not just

  227. your birthright, but your blessing." And

  228. Esau exclaimed, "No wonder his name is

  229. Jacob. He's probably angry and seething

  230. for now he has cheated me twice. I don't

  231. know if you have a brother or sister

  232. like that or you're that brother or

  233. sister, but man, that does not feel

  234. good. First, he took my rights as a

  235. firstborn and now he has stolen my

  236. blessings. Oh, haven't you saved even

  237. one blessing for me, Dad? Come on, Dad.

  238. You got more for me. And his dad says,

  239. "What have I have left to give to you?

  240. And just so we know, Issa is resilient.

  241. He's resourceful. And it reminds me of

  242. John Rambo.

  243. Anyone know who John Rambo is?

  244. I love 80s action movies.

  245. And basically Esau is about to break

  246. because even John Rambo type people have

  247. their breaking points and his inner

  248. Rambo is about to emerge

  249. as Rambo says in his movies. Can I do a

  250. Rambo impression?

  251. >> Don't push it. I'll give you a war you

  252. won't believe.

  253. Not very good. But

  254. verse 41, but here's the fallout. And

  255. Esau wept bitterly

  256. and held a grudge against Jacob. This

  257. darn wall is already up. And Esau

  258. determined in his heart, the days of

  259. mourning for my father approaching, and

  260. then I'm just going to love my brother

  261. Jacob.

  262. You know what the scriptures actually

  263. say?

  264. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.

  265. I know my brothers wanted to kill me or

  266. hurt me when I was younger. Thankfully,

  267. they didn't. Or to quote John Rambo, he

  268. drew first blood, not me.

  269. And then Rebecca, his mom, hears of this

  270. and she says, "Baby boy, it's time for

  271. you to get out of dodge. What's come

  272. down the pipe isn't going to be good for

  273. you. You need to go to Haran." And just

  274. so you know, Haran, at least from what

  275. my research uh said, it's 550 miles

  276. away.

  277. There's no airplanes, there's no trains,

  278. there's no cars. And so he goes on this

  279. epic journey and and during that epic

  280. journey, God is going to transform his

  281. heart even if all the walls aren't fixed

  282. right away. And yet in that story, this

  283. guy Jacob is going to be angry at God.

  284. He's going to try and run away from God,

  285. but God is going to get his attention in

  286. the middle of the mess of his life, in

  287. the middle of the strain and conflict.

  288. And yet, if I can be so bold, I want to

  289. go off on a little tangent here. sidet

  290. track for a moment. Who Jacob is has its

  291. roots in a very dysfunctional family.

  292. For instance, Isaac, his papa, was

  293. emotionally distant and far away. His

  294. mother, Rebecca, is a helicopter parent.

  295. You've heard of that term. You know what

  296. that means. She's overbearing and

  297. conniving. If you're a helicopter

  298. parent, I'm not saying that about you.

  299. Just so you know. Abraham, his

  300. grandfather, was motivated by fear and

  301. deceit and impatience in all the

  302. maneuverings he does. Sarah, his

  303. grandmother, was motivated by doubt,

  304. jealousy, and skepticism.

  305. See, there's this popular saying that

  306. I've heard from a guy named Pete

  307. Scazero, and it goes like this. Jesus

  308. may be in your heart, but grandpa is in

  309. your bones.

  310. In essence, Jesus may be here, but the

  311. way we grew up influences a lot of the

  312. decisions that we make.

  313. And family is deeply in Jacob's bones.

  314. There's going to be lots of flaws that

  315. we will see and we already have. It's in

  316. fact, it's going to take decades for God

  317. to penetrate through joint and marrow of

  318. Jacob's life. First, he's going to need

  319. to know God so that he can then find his

  320. true self. And guess what? It begins

  321. with a fiesta. A fiesta. That'd be

  322. great. A siesta and a dream. Genesis 28.

  323. We'll jump ahead. And so Jacob left Bers

  324. Beersa and went towards Haran, 550 miles

  325. away. So just so we know, there's going

  326. to need to be lots of pit stops and

  327. breaks and stuff like that. and he

  328. reached a certain place and he spent the

  329. night there because the sun had set. And

  330. so he took one of the stones from the

  331. place, put it there at at his head and

  332. lay down in that place. And he dreamed

  333. and I love dreams. And this is what he

  334. saw. A stairway was set in the ground

  335. with his top reaching the sky and God's

  336. angels were going up and down on it. I

  337. remember a dream I had a few years ago

  338. and and I was struggling kind of in my

  339. personal walk with different things and

  340. in my dream a demon had entered into my

  341. dream and into my house and this wasn't

  342. the first time I had this kind of dream

  343. in fact that has been a type of dream

  344. I've had over the years beginning when I

  345. was 14 years old.

  346. When I was 14, I was immensely afraid

  347. and fearful of that.

  348. And that started to produce a deep fear

  349. in me for the rest of my life. And it

  350. trapped me for about a decade and a

  351. half.

  352. And this dream I had a couple years ago,

  353. just so you know, two uh days later, I I

  354. was going I went to Tim Hortons and I

  355. was going to work there for a while just

  356. to get out of the house to kind of get

  357. out of my own head. And I sat at Tim

  358. Hortons and and and all of a sudden I

  359. saw this acquaintance kind of walk in.

  360. I'm just going to name him Bob. And Bob

  361. was, 'Hey, how are you? What are you

  362. doing here? Oh, I came here to work. And

  363. Bob approached me and he said, "You know

  364. what, Chad? God told me to come here. I

  365. don't even like Tim Hortons and Wendy's.

  366. I was going to Turo to do a painting job

  367. and God told me to come right here

  368. because there was someone that I had to

  369. meet and I didn't know who it was. A and

  370. God gave me this message from Isaiah.

  371. And I'm not going to tell you what

  372. passage it is cuz it's not relevant

  373. necessarily.

  374. And God is going to transform your fear

  375. and your struggle. And all that came

  376. from a simple dream. And I use that as

  377. an example because in dreams from God,

  378. we often get clarity about what we're

  379. going through and what God is going to

  380. do. Jacob's clarity is this. He's going

  381. to journey from a deceiver,

  382. dying to his false self, and he's going

  383. to gain a new life symbolized with a new

  384. name that isn't given yet.

  385. But it all begins with an ordinary

  386. moment when he's taking a bit of a pit

  387. stop.

  388. He's resting and he's sleeping. And in

  389. that moment, God gets Jacob's attention

  390. just like he got my attention. In verse

  391. 13 to 14, Jacob starts to see angels

  392. kind of climbing up and then down a

  393. ladder. And on top of that ladder,

  394. if you want to see amazing moment, I was

  395. reading this this week and it was just

  396. like I just started weeping because of

  397. what I saw

  398. stood the Lord.

  399. Jacob, I am the Lord of all these people

  400. in your family. If you go and read it,

  401. he starts to name off his family's

  402. names. I'm the God who worked in your

  403. family's character despite all the flaws

  404. that was so evident. I'm the God of all

  405. the details of all of your life, the

  406. good, the bad, and the ugly.

  407. And then Jacob wakes up and he realizes

  408. that he doesn't have to manipulate life

  409. anymore, although he will still continue

  410. to try and manipulate life. However,

  411. this is where God is about to work out

  412. the kinks in his flaws and his sins.

  413. In verse 15, it goes like this.

  414. Here's what God says to him. I think

  415. this is very, very important today.

  416. What's more, I'm with you. What did we

  417. just celebrate at Christmas? The

  418. incarnation, Emmanuel, God with us. I'm

  419. with you, Jacob. and I'll protect you

  420. wherever you go. One day even, I will

  421. bring you back to this land. I'm not

  422. going to leave you until I have finished

  423. giving you everything I have promised

  424. you. Everything I have promised your

  425. your grandfather. And then Jacob awoke

  426. from his sleep and said, "Surely the

  427. Lord was in this place and I wasn't even

  428. aware of it." But he was so afraid and

  429. said, "What an awesome place this is. It

  430. is none other than the house of God, the

  431. very gateway to heaven.

  432. And so begins Jacob's training sessions

  433. with three lessons that we're going to

  434. look at very briefly today.

  435. So I don't have my Bible up here. I need

  436. it cuz I forgot to

  437. get a passage.

  438. How you guys doing today?

  439. Little bit of a break in the service.

  440. Okay,

  441. so here's the first lesson that we're

  442. going to get from this story today.

  443. Sometimes we just need to get still and

  444. wait upon the Lord. But if you're like

  445. me, waiting and getting still is tough.

  446. See in the scriptures when people of God

  447. have to get still and wait it produces

  448. all kinds of various emotions and

  449. reactions in the people. Encourage you

  450. to go and see Moses what happens when he

  451. has to get still, Job when Job has to

  452. get still. Jonah when he has to get

  453. still, Ruth when she has to get still or

  454. Lamentations which is Jeremiah, David,

  455. Esther, Judas produces a particular

  456. emotion when he has to trust God and

  457. finally Peter. But in truth, if you're

  458. like me, you've seen me this morning. I

  459. hate being still. You know what? If I

  460. got important work to do, what I will do

  461. first?

  462. I will do laundry.

  463. I hate laundry. But if I have to get

  464. still, especially with God, I will go

  465. and do laundry first.

  466. And yet over 45 times in the Bible, God

  467. invites the people of God to be still

  468. and to wait upon him.

  469. So we know Jacob is a bit of a control

  470. freak. But in this moment, he takes upon

  471. intentional inactivity

  472. where God essentially makes this promise

  473. to him. I am going to change your

  474. trajectory from this point forward.

  475. As for us,

  476. our often our default position is that

  477. when nothing happens, we grab for some

  478. solution instead of letting God bring

  479. the solution forward. Which is why

  480. waiting feels like an act of revolution

  481. or defiance.

  482. It feels wrong, but it's the first act

  483. of defiance against our inner Jacob. For

  484. spiritual transformation doesn't happen

  485. with a snap of our fingers. It's what

  486. Eugene Peterson, Michael referenced this

  487. a couple weeks ago, labeled as a long

  488. obedience in the same direction.

  489. To break the cycles in our lives takes a

  490. lot of spiritual work. And I will argue

  491. that first we need to get still and wait

  492. upon God. So that's the first lesson.

  493. Sometimes we need to get still and wait

  494. upon God and acknowledge that it's

  495. tough. Here's the second lesson I can I

  496. think we can learn from Jacob's story.

  497. We can actually meet God in the

  498. ordinary. And yet even in the ordinary

  499. when God shows up, it is hard sometimes

  500. to be aware of God which can be its own

  501. struggle.

  502. And so Jacob comes to an ordinary place,

  503. pitches a tent, and yet he's oblivious,

  504. at least initially, to God's presence.

  505. And yet he says, "The Lord was in this

  506. place, and I was unaware of it."

  507. Which is why he renames the unnamed

  508. place Bethl. And yet, I'll speak for

  509. myself, we can miss God, too. Sometimes

  510. we miss God because we're so busy

  511. focusing on other things. Ever been

  512. there, church?

  513. Sometimes we are unwilling to wait

  514. because we don't hear from God in the

  515. manner we desire and we simply move on.

  516. Ever been there, church?

  517. >> Yeah, I have. Sometimes life becomes

  518. difficult and uncomfortable and we

  519. wallow in the pain and we don't push

  520. past the wall so that God can birth

  521. something new in us.

  522. So, how does God meet us in the ordinary

  523. parts of our life? Well, I'd like to

  524. highlight two this morning. Well, God

  525. can come to us in difficult times like

  526. in Jacob's life, in the failure of life,

  527. where we might be standing at the gate

  528. of heaven and be unaware of it.

  529. It might be in a hospital, a funeral, a

  530. counselor counseling session where God

  531. gets our attention and starts to reveal

  532. something profound and gives great

  533. clarity or comfort.

  534. But those are often painful lessons and

  535. we're going to delve into that in the

  536. next two weeks. God can also come in our

  537. emotions, anger, depression, sadness.

  538. Trust me, he can. on retreat a few years

  539. ago. I was dealing with a lot of lament

  540. as a pastor. We just we bury too many

  541. people and it was really eating at my

  542. core soul. And I was angry at God. I was

  543. sad. I didn't know what to deal with it.

  544. And I remember going to this little

  545. retreat center down in Andy Ganesh. And

  546. one night in particular, I raged at God.

  547. And I started writing down my journal.

  548. Here's everything I'm angry at you for,

  549. God. Here's everything I'm sad at in my

  550. life, God. And I wept and I wept. I

  551. didn't destroy the retreat center,

  552. but it was a place where God met me in

  553. what I would label what I felt like the

  554. unfairness of life. And so he met me in

  555. those emotions and started to transform

  556. that part of my life.

  557. Lesson number three,

  558. we should take time to see God's

  559. splendor and be moved to worship. See,

  560. even while Jacob is on the run, he sees

  561. this ladder to God's house. And God's

  562. awesomeness is almost too much for him

  563. to behold. And just as I might plant a

  564. tree or scatter ashes to remember a love

  565. lost one, Jacob in verse 18:21 sets up a

  566. pillar or an altar.

  567. and he sets up this altar because it

  568. denoted something truly significant

  569. happened. Just so you know, if you ever

  570. get a chance to go to Israel,

  571. everywhere's an ancient church was set

  572. up was because something significant

  573. happened there and the church community

  574. said, "We need to have a church here

  575. because God did something really, really

  576. powerful."

  577. However, this wasn't a loss so much to

  578. speak of, but this was that God spoke to

  579. him. See, it's true that grandpa was in

  580. his bones, but God was about to change

  581. Jacob forever.

  582. Which is why the goal of disciplehip is

  583. to allow Jesus more and more to get into

  584. our bones and to transform us into his

  585. image. Of course, if you go to just at

  586. the beginning of Jesus's own ministry,

  587. he actually references Jacob's latter in

  588. John 1:51.

    John 1:51

  589. And so Nathaniel's been asking him

  590. questions as and Jesus has kind of come

  591. into Nathaniel's life.

  592. And he said, you know, I don't know what

  593. to do with this, but Jesus says, you're

  594. going to see greater things than these.

  595. Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see

  596. heaven opened and the angels of God

  597. ascending and descending on the son of

  598. God.

  599. In the Logos Bible software,

  600. commentators believe Jesus is saying

  601. three things here that I think applies

  602. to our passage today. I'm the ladder

  603. that will elevate fallen humanity. You

  604. can go and see John 3:17.

    John 3:17

  605. So, I'm the ladder that will elevate. I

  606. am the mediator that Jacob met at Bethl

  607. that will be your mediator. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:5

  608. 2:5 John 14:6.

    John 14:6

  609. And I am the fulfillment of all of God's

  610. promises that Jacob saw and that a uh

  611. Abraham saw and that others were seeing.

  612. And Paul picks up this up this in Romans

    Romans 9:10–13

  613. 9:10-13.

  614. And so Jesus is actually giving three

  615. claims and three beautiful truths. And

  616. I'm going to end there because I think

  617. this sets up a great time to come and

  618. meet God in the act of communion.
