  1. All right. What Christians believe. This

  2. is our series that we are on here now.

  3. And um the kind of the theme verse for

  4. this series is Titus 2:1, which says,

    Titus 2:1

  5. "Teach what accords with sound

  6. doctrine." And so that's our goal is to

  7. teach what accords with sound doctrine

  8. over these next several weeks as we work

  9. through sort of systematic theology,

  10. uh different key Christian beliefs that

  11. we have. Last week we looked about we

  12. talked about how do we know about God

  13. and uh how do we know anything? How do

  14. we know how do we what are we basing

  15. this series on? And so we talked about

  16. how God has spoken. We talked about

  17. general revelation versus special

  18. revelation. And thankfully God has made

  19. himself known to us. We talked all about

  20. that last week. Okay. So this morning

  21. then the the question is who is God? Who

  22. is God anyway?

  23. That's maybe the most fundamental

  24. question we can answer. Who is God? What

  25. is he like? How do we describe him?

  26. What's his name?

  27. You know, it's it's actually very hard

  28. for us to fully comprehend God, right?

  29. He is transcendent.

  30. He is ineffable. I love that word

  31. ineffable. It's a a word I learned in

  32. seminary about God. Um, and the word

  33. ineffable means too great or extreme to

  34. be expressed or described in words.

  35. Yeah, that's our God. I heard someone

  36. one time say, and I've used this

  37. illustration before, but I love it.

  38. Trying to understand God with our brains

  39. is like trying to fit the ocean inside a

  40. cup.

  41. I mean, you can go to the ocean with a

  42. cup and you can scoop up a little bit of

  43. ocean and you can look at it in your cup

  44. and you can go, "Oh, that's what the

  45. ocean is like." Okay, well, you're

  46. missing a whole lot, right? Yeah, you

  47. can put a microscope on it and study it

  48. and it be be fascinating, I'm sure, but

  49. obviously there's so much more to the

  50. vastness and complexity of the ocean

  51. than what you can fit inside a single

  52. cup. And but that's what it's like with

  53. our human brains trying to understand

  54. God. He is just way beyond what we can

  55. process. But we can get a little bit of

  56. a sample and we he has revealed himself

  57. to us. So he is knowable. But we have to

  58. be humble about how much we can really

  59. understand about God. And I mean some of

  60. you might have a really big cup. I mean

  61. you're really smart. And some of you

  62. might have a little tiny little shot

  63. glass. Um but still nevertheless

  64. compared to God it's just tiny.

  65. There's really no way this side of

  66. heaven we will ever be able to fully

  67. understand God. I like what St.

  68. Augustine said and I'm going to read

  69. some Latin here. See comprehend.

  70. What was he saying? Anyone know?

  71. >> If you can understand it, it's not God.

  72. Right? If you can understand it, if you

  73. can comprehend it, it's not God.

  74. The best we can do really is study the

  75. scriptures and take from it all we can

  76. and compile it together into a picture

  77. of who God is based on what he has

  78. chosen to reveal to us. Hank Hanograph

  79. said, "We cannot comprehend God. The

  80. best we can do is apprehend him. Just

  81. grab hold of whatever knowledge of him

  82. we can get our hands on."

  83. Thankfully, we do have the word. We

  84. talked about that last week. the

  85. supernatural word through the spirit of

  86. God, the written word in scripture form,

  87. and of course the living word, Jesus

  88. Christ. And we can grab hold of some

  89. knowledge of God. He is not unknowable.

  90. And when we turn to the scriptures, we

  91. do learn quite a lot about God. We

  92. learn, for example, some of the

  93. characteristics of God. We learn that

  94. he's all powerful, that he is all

  95. present, he is all knowing. We learn

  96. that God is good. We learn that he is

  97. the creator. We're going to talk about

  98. that next Sunday when we talk about in

  99. the beginning. What is what is what do

  100. we understand about creation? We know

  101. that God cares about us. We know that

  102. God is active and close. We know that

  103. God is eternal. The scriptures reveal

  104. his holiness and his justice, his

  105. sovereignty over the universe and his

  106. mercy and so on and so on. On it goes.

  107. There are things we can learn about God.

  108. We also learn God's name in the Bible.

  109. Yes, God has a name. In the Hebrew, it

  110. is Yahweh. The the the is called the

  111. tetetrogrammaton. Four Hebrew letters

  112. that in roughly English are YHW.

  113. And uh Hebrew written Hebrew doesn't

  114. have vowels, but when you put them in uh

  115. estimating on how you would say that

  116. YHW, it comes out Yahweh. This is what

  117. God told Moses when Moses said, "What's

  118. your name?" He said, "Yahweh." I am that

  119. I am is what it means. But his name is

  120. Yahweh. So, there's quite a bit we can

  121. know about God. But what I really want

  122. us to try and begin to apprehend today

  123. is the very essence of our God.

  124. What and who is this God?

  125. And that question leads us to one of the

  126. most central doctrines of all of

  127. Christianity, the Trinity.

  128. So today, that is the focus of our of

  129. our message, the triune God. I like the

  130. word triune even better than Trinity.

  131. Try unity

  132. threeness but oneness at the same time

  133. God in three persons as we sang blessed

  134. trinity father son holy spirit

  135. this is a mystery to the human mind

  136. right obviously it defies laws of human

  137. logic I'm going to use the whiteboard

  138. again to this Sunday and basically what

  139. we're saying is 1 + 1 + 1 equals

  140. >> right yeah what no it doesn't as it does

  141. when we're talking about the trinity.

  142. And this obviously is confusing. It's

  143. been confusing people for a very long

  144. time. In fact, if we go way back in

  145. through church history, uh this

  146. question, this mystery, this complexity

  147. of the trinity was the basis for the

  148. council of Nika in 325 AD. This was the

  149. first ecumenical

  150. church council uh that was was convened

  151. by the emperor emperor Constantine as an

  152. effort to try to settle the debate

  153. around uh the the nature of God. See the

  154. concept of the trinity was not invented

  155. by the council of Nika. It was not it

  156. was not formulated by the council of

  157. Nika. It existed it existed from the

  158. time of Jesus on through. The new

  159. testament teaches it. I mean it existed

  160. into eternity past. But the

  161. understanding, the revelation of the

  162. trinity existed from the time of Jesus

  163. um all the way through the early church

  164. and in the early church fathers, but it

  165. was never really clearly articulated

  166. like it needed to be clarified and

  167. affirmed officially.

  168. And in the early 300s, there was a small

  169. group of people including a guy named

  170. Aras, a pastor who was starting to

  171. challenge the concept of the trinity.

  172. even he what he was saying was that well

  173. Jesus is just a created being of God not

  174. equal to God.

  175. So this big meeting was called uh the

  176. council of Nika held in N in the city of

  177. Nika which is in modern day Turkey and

  178. over 300 bishops and many church

  179. leaders, pastors and theologians

  180. convened to study the scriptures and

  181. come to a a clear conclusion.

  182. And um

  183. things got heated. There's actually a

  184. story I It's It's probably not true, but

  185. it's fun to think about. Um uh about St.

  186. Nicholas. Yes. Santa Claus, right? St.

  187. Nicholas. That apparently St. Nicholas

  188. got so mad at Aras for the things he was

  189. saying. You got a we got a painting here

  190. that St. Nicholas punched Aras in the

  191. face for his heresy of of the Trinity.

  192. I don't know. But wouldn't that be cool

  193. if that was true?

  194. Um, what was the result of the Council

  195. of Nika? The result was overwhelmingly

  196. the the people, the delegates at the

  197. Council of Nika voted in favor of of

  198. understanding the Trinity as the church

  199. had traditionally understood it. Only

  200. two of the 300 plus bishops did not

  201. agree. So that's over 99

  202. something%,

  203. right? That's better than even Pierre

  204. Polyv can get. Okay. So, like they did

  205. this was this was an overwhelming show

  206. of support.

  207. And one of the gifts of this council is

  208. the beautiful Nyian creed which some

  209. churches recite which describes Jesus as

  210. being of one substance with the father.

  211. A generation after the Nyian uh council

  212. happened there was a group of of people

  213. called the Capidocian fathers. This is

  214. Basil the great, Gregory of Nissa and

  215. Gregory of Nazanzius, three prominent

  216. theologians of their time. And they came

  217. up with language that further clarifies

  218. the nature of the triune God. And this

  219. is what they said. It's called the

  220. Capidosian formula in the Greek. Here

  221. I'm going to put my Greek skills to

  222. work. Now we've had Latin, now Greek.

  223. Mia

  224. trace hoopostasis.

  225. One being, one essence, three persons.

  226. One being, three persons.

  227. God is one in being,

  228. three in person.

  229. So I really think this this captures the

  230. essence of of what we believe as

  231. Christians about the Trinity. One God is

  232. one in being, three in person.

  233. Think about it this way. Um, if a a

  234. being is what you are, and a person is

  235. who you are. So, I am a human being,

  236. that's what I am, but I am Michael

  237. Frederick's. That's who I am. And

  238. thankfully, there's only one of me and

  239. not a whole bunch of little Arabic

  240. Michaels all over the Middle Eastern

  241. North Africa region. Um, I am Michael

  242. Frederick. That's who I am.

  243. And God is one being. That's what he is.

  244. He is God. He is the only one. He is the

  245. only God. There's one of him. That's

  246. what he is. That's his being. But he is

  247. three persons at the same time. Father,

  248. son, and spirit. That's who he is. One

  249. being, three persons.

  250. Now, analogies over the years have been

  251. attempted to try to help the human brain

  252. comprehend this. And they can be very

  253. helpful. Most of them fall short. Uh in

  254. fact probably all of them fall short

  255. because it really is as as Augustine

  256. said if you can comprehend it it's not

  257. God but uh analogies have been attempted

  258. like the analogy of water where water is

  259. in three can be in three different

  260. states and yet it's still water. Um the

  261. egg uh right the shell the yolk and the

  262. white make up the egg three different

  263. parts. St. Patrick talked about the

  264. clover the threeleaf clover. Um, all of

  265. these are good attempts, but they fall

  266. short. I used to really like um the the

  267. sun analogy, right? That the sun uh is

  268. like a ball of flaming ball of gas and

  269. it emits heat and light. And with all

  270. three of those together make the sun.

  271. But then someone said uh well that's

  272. actually the idea that uh the sun and

  273. the spirit emanate from the father that

  274. they are created from the father. Like

  275. oh rats that doesn't work either. Uh,

  276. and then last night Janessa posted on

  277. our on our Emanuel uh group uh on

  278. Facebook about a a chord. I thought

  279. that's pretty good, right? You've got

  280. three notes

  281. that together make one chord. I thought

  282. that's not bad, right? The three the

  283. three notes layered on top of each

  284. other, but still if you take away one of

  285. the like it's that's the the chord is

  286. the sum of the parts. And that still

  287. isn't quite it. So

  288. really it's it's pretty impossible um to

  289. come up with a perfect analogy but there

  290. is an image an illustration that was

  291. developed in the 12th century way back

  292. in medieval times. I don't know who came

  293. up with it but some smart person that

  294. said this is the best way to describe

  295. the trinity. It's called the shield of

  296. the trinity and it it sort of goes like

  297. this. You've got God

  298. in the middle and you've got father here

  299. and you have son

  300. and you have the holy spirit.

  301. And the way this goes is you say okay so

  302. the father is god the son is god and the

  303. holy spirit is god. The three are all

  304. God. And yet the father

  305. is not the son and the son is not the

  306. father. And the holy spirit is not the

  307. father and the father is not the holy

  308. spirit. And the son is not the holy

  309. spirit. And the holy spirit is not the

  310. son.

  311. The shield of the trinity. And this

  312. whole thing is god. This is the triune

  313. God.

  314. Now, I know it still doesn't really make

  315. sense, but it does hold these truths

  316. together in one place that I think is

  317. really good. What it illustrates, I

  318. think, is the three truths that we find

  319. in scripture. And we're going to look at

  320. each of these. The three truths we find

  321. in scripture is that there is one God.

  322. There's not multiple gods. There is one

  323. God who eternally exists as father, son,

  324. and holy spirit who are each fully and

  325. equally God and yet three distinct

  326. persons.

  327. So let's look at the scriptures together

  328. to see if we can find these three

  329. truths, these three simultaneous truths

  330. found in the Bible.

  331. So there is one God.

  332. The Bible's very clear on this. This is

  333. not controversial. Deuteronomy 6:4, for

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  334. example, says, "Here, O Israel, the Lord

  335. our God. The Lord is one." Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 32:39

  336. 32:39, "There is no God besides me, says

  337. the Lord." And we could I there's like

  338. dozens and dozens of scriptures we could

  339. read. I'm not going to read them all

  340. because we we'd be here all day. But all

  341. throughout the Old Testament and

  342. affirmed in the New Testament is the

  343. very clear idea that there is only one

  344. God. There is no other god. So this is

  345. monotheism. We are monotheists. We come

  346. from Judaism which is a monotheistic

  347. religion. Uh so this is

  348. non-controversial unless you're a

  349. polytheist. Uh but we believe there is

  350. one God. The scriptures teach that

  351. clearly. Then we have the idea that the

  352. father, son, and holy spirit are each

  353. fully and equally god.

  354. So starting with the father, do we see

  355. that in scripture? Well, yes. Jesus

  356. called God the father over and over and

  357. over again. In John 6:27 as well, it

    John 6:27

  358. says on him, on Jesus, God the father

  359. has set his seal and on it goes. This

  360. again not controversial. No one is going

  361. to debate that when the Bible talks

  362. about the heavenly father, it's not

  363. talking about God. Of course, it is.

  364. It's talking about God, the father is

  365. God.

  366. Where it gets a little more uh debatable

  367. for some people is whether or not the

  368. son, Jesus is God.

  369. So, what do the scriptures say there?

  370. We'll start in John chapter 1, which is

    John 1 chapter mention

  371. a scripture we used last week as well

  372. when we were talking about the word made

  373. flesh.

  374. It says in John 1 verse one, in the

  375. beginning was the word. We know this is

  376. Jesus. And the word was with God.

  377. >> And the word

  378. >> and the word was God. So the son is not

  379. the father. He was with the father, but

  380. he also is God. So both of those truths

  381. right there in one sentence. The word

  382. was with God and the word was God. Not a

  383. god. By the way, the Jehovah, if you

  384. have a Jehovah's Witness Bible, it'll

  385. say a god. that they've put that in

  386. there to make it suit their doctrine,

  387. but that's not in the Greek. The word

  388. was with God and the word was God. He

  389. was in the beginning with God. All

  390. things were made through him and without

  391. him was not anything made that was made.

  392. That is a very clear statement of the

  393. divinity of Jesus.

  394. John 8:58 is another passage where Jesus

    John 8:58

  395. said to them truly truly I say to you

  396. before Abraham was I am. He didn't say

  397. before Abraham was I was. He said before

  398. Abraham was I am. That was an

  399. intentional use of language because the

  400. name Yahweh is I am. And so he is saying

  401. before Abraham was me Yahweh. He's

  402. talking about himself as God. In fact,

  403. the people picked up on what he was

  404. saying. So much so, so concerned about

  405. the blasphemy that they picked up stones

  406. to throw at him. It says in the next

  407. verse, "This guy's claiming to be God."

  408. Uh John 20:28, Thomas, doubting Thomas,

    John 20:28

  409. sees the resurrected Jesus and he bows

  410. down before him and says, "My Lord and

  411. my God." He calls him God. And Jesus

  412. does not correct Thomas. In Romans 9:5

    Romans 9:5

  413. it says, "The Christ who is God over

  414. all, blessed forever. Amen. Christ Jesus

  415. who is God over all." Titus 2:13, "Our

    Titus 2:13

  416. blessed hope, the appearing of the glory

  417. of our great God and Savior Jesus

  418. Christ."

  419. 1 John 5:20. And we know that the son of

    1 John 5:20

  420. God has come and has given us

  421. understanding so that we may know him

  422. who is true and we are in him who is

  423. true in his son Jesus Christ. He meaning

  424. Jesus is the true God and eternal life.

  425. I mean that's just a sampling. Plus we

  426. could look at all the times when Jesus

  427. did things that only God had the

  428. authority to do. like forgiving sins,

  429. like claiming authority over the

  430. universe, like controlling the wind and

  431. the waves and things that are obviously

  432. the acts of God. The scriptures are

  433. clear. Jesus is God. The father is God.

  434. The son is God. What about the Holy

  435. Spirit?

  436. Some people think of the Holy Spirit

  437. as an impersonal force,

  438. as sort of just the emanation of God the

  439. Father. But that's not how the Holy

  440. Spirit is depicted in scripture. He's

  441. not just a force like gravity or

  442. electricity. He's not an it. He's a he.

  443. He has personality.

  444. A couple of key passages to illustrate

  445. the divinity of the Holy Spirit. Uh 2

    2 Corinthians 3:17–18

  446. Corinthians 3:17 to18. And I know I'm

  447. throwing out a lot of scripture here and

  448. you're not going to catch it all. I'm

  449. sorry if you're writing it down. Maybe

  450. you can get it. Uh 2 Corinthians 3:17

    2 Corinthians 3:17–18

  451. to18 twice it says, "The Lord is the

  452. spirit." The Lord is the spirit.

  453. Uh in Acts chapter 5, you have the scene

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  454. with Ananas and Safh, these this couple

  455. who who lied uh to the leaders of the

  456. church. Um they and and the the Lord

  457. knew about this that what they were up

  458. to. And in Acts 5:3 it says, "You have

    Acts 5:3

  459. lied to the Holy Spirit. You have not

  460. lied just to human beings but to God."

  461. By lying to the Holy Spirit, you are

  462. lying to God. By lying to God, you are

  463. lying to the Holy Spirit. Meaning the

  464. Holy Spirit is God. God is the Holy

  465. Spirit.

  466. Uh the book of Hebrews calls the Holy

  467. Spirit the eternal spirit which is a

  468. title uh an adjective that is given

  469. elsewhere only to the eternal God and on

  470. it goes. So does the scripture teach

  471. that the father is God?

  472. >> Does the scripture teach that the son is

  473. God?

  474. >> Does the scripture teach that the Holy

  475. Spirit is God?

  476. >> All right, good. We're on the same page.

  477. And if you don't agree, that's okay,

  478. too. Um well, it's we're going to get to

  479. that. We're going to talk about some

  480. heresy in a minute here, but it's okay

  481. to disagree. Um three distinct persons.

  482. Does the scripture teach this? That even

  483. though they are equally God, yet they

  484. are distinct from one another in some

  485. way. That this is not one God expressing

  486. himself in three different ways. This is

  487. one God existing as three distinct

  488. persons simultaneously.

  489. one God who is three.

  490. Well, let's look at some things that

  491. point to this.

  492. Starting with God's name in the Hebrew.

  493. Uh not the Yahweh name. That's one. But

  494. there's another word that's used for God

  495. in the Hebrew, and that is Elohim.

  496. Elohim. Um in Genesis chapter 1, for

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  497. example, when it says in the beginning,

  498. God created the heavens and the earth.

  499. In the Hebrew, it's in the beginning,

  500. Elohim created the heavens and the

  501. earth. Elohim is a title for God.

  502. Well, Elohim is actually a plural word.

  503. Isn't that interesting? It's plural.

  504. Even though it's used in the singular

  505. sense, God did this, God said that. It's

  506. Elohim is plural,

  507. which I think is pointing to something

  508. about the nature of God. three persons

  509. are actively are active and present in

  510. the story of creation in the in the

  511. Genesis 1 uh creation narrative. You

  512. have God the father obviously in the

  513. beginning God uh but it also says that

  514. God spoke and things came into being and

  515. when we go to John chapter 1 that we

    John 1 chapter mention

  516. just read where it says in the beginning

  517. was the word and through the word

  518. everything was created. This is the

  519. Greek the logos. I know we're throwing

  520. out a lot of Hebrew and Greek this this

  521. morning but you don't have to memorize

  522. it. uh but uh that the word of God that

  523. he through whom he speaks things into

  524. creation is the second person of the

  525. trinity. This is Jesus who became flesh.

  526. Right? This is uh through uh through his

  527. word he created. Right? The Bible says

  528. that Jesus is the one who created

  529. things. Um and and then it says that the

  530. spirit was hovering over the surface of

  531. the waters. And so you have you have God

  532. the father, God the son, and God the

  533. holy spirit all present in creation

  534. simultaneously.

  535. And in Genesis 1:26, when God creates

    Genesis 1:26

  536. people,

  537. God says, curiously, "Let us make man in

  538. our image."

  539. Why is God speaking in the plural at

  540. that point? Well, maybe God is three.

  541. Isaiah 6:8, "Then I heard the voice of

    Isaiah 6:8

  542. the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send and

  543. who will go for us?" God speaks of

  544. himself as an us.

  545. In Matthew 28:1 19 in the great

    Matthew 28:1

  546. commission when Jesus tells us to

  547. baptize he says go and baptize in the

  548. name singular of the father son and holy

  549. spirit singular name but three

  550. simultaneously

  551. we also have instances where we can see

  552. the distinction between the father and

  553. the son and the holy spirit for example

  554. Jesus praying to the father if jesus is

  555. the father how is he praying to him that

  556. doesn't make sense the new testament

  557. also describes Jesus as the mediator

  558. between God the Father and people. So

  559. he's the mediator for himself. No,

  560. there's some distinction there.

  561. John 8:18, Jesus says, "I am the one who

    John 8:18

  562. testifies about myself. My other witness

  563. is the father who sent me." Distinction.

  564. In Matthew 3, at the baptism of Jesus,

  565. this is perhaps the most clear. We have

  566. Jesus in human flesh being baptized. We

  567. also have the voice of God the father

  568. who speaks and you have the Holy Spirit

  569. in the form of a dove. All three

  570. simultaneously there in the same scene

  571. which tells you that the son is not the

  572. father and the father is not the holy

  573. spirit and the holy spirit is not the

  574. son. There's distinction.

  575. I'll have more to say about the the holy

  576. spirit's unique role in a in a future

  577. sermon. But what we see here as we take

  578. this preponderance of scripture al

  579. together is that it testifies to these

  580. truths that there is one God who exists

  581. eternally as father, son, holy spirit

  582. who are each fully and equally god and

  583. yet three distinct persons.

  584. This is the testimony of the word. This

  585. is the doctrine of the church.

  586. Now, despite all of this overwhelming

  587. scriptural evidence and the clear

  588. statements of the church over the

  589. centuries to clarify and affirm the

  590. teachings of scriptures, there have been

  591. several failures to correctly piece

  592. together this doctrine over the

  593. centuries. And the church calls them

  594. heresies.

  595. You like that? Heretic.

  596. There are three main That's a strong

  597. word, but it's probably accurate. There

  598. are three main heresies, three false

  599. doctrines of the Trinity that we're

  600. going to look at.

  601. Okay. The first one is tritheism.

  602. Tritheism, [clears throat]

  603. right? Theism is the belief that there's

  604. a god. Atheism is the belief that

  605. there's no god. Triism is the belief

  606. that there it's three gods. Right? So

  607. that's the idea that 1 + 1 plus 1 equals

  608. three. It's actually three gods that

  609. make up the Godhead. It's not uh one God

  610. in three persons. It's three distinct

  611. beings. Three in being, not one in

  612. being.

  613. So the church says, "No, that's a

  614. heresy." And the Bible would not agree

  615. with that idea. Who are modernday

  616. trists? Yes, I'm going there. Who are

  617. the trthists today?

  618. It's the Mormons, the Church of Jesus

  619. Christ of Latter-day Saints. They call

  620. themselves the church of Jesus Christ.

  621. Uh but uh that they believe in

  622. three gods, right? God the father, he's

  623. the main God, but then Jesus is another

  624. God, literally the offspring of God. And

  625. the Holy Spirit is another third God.

  626. Three beings that work together but are

  627. not all the one God. And by the way, you

  628. can become a God too one day if you're a

  629. good faithful Mormon. So they really

  630. actually Mormonism teaches polytheism.

  631. polytheism

  632. that's not Christianity. So in response

  633. to that we the script what we see the

  634. scriptures say no there is one God and

  635. only one God. That is so clear in the

  636. Bible. That's like of all the things

  637. we've said today the clearest is that

  638. there is only one God.

  639. There are no lowercase G gods.

  640. And those who don't hold to that belief

  641. cannot be called Christians.

  642. Okay. What's the second one?

  643. There's tritheism. And the second one is

  644. Oh, it's going back to our boy Aras.

  645. Aryanism.

  646. All right.

  647. Even though St. Nicholas may or may not

  648. have punched him in the face, his

  649. beliefs persist. Aryanism. Aryan uh

  650. Aryanism says, "Yes, there's only one

  651. God. We affirm that." Okay, good. That's

  652. a good starting point. But what Aryan

  653. Aras Aryanism would say is that well

  654. because there's only one God then surely

  655. Jesus and the Holy Spirit cannot be God.

  656. That doesn't make sense. So Jesus can't

  657. be God. He's a created divine being but

  658. not God. And the spirit isn't God. It's

  659. just God's impersonal force.

  660. So any idea who modernday

  661. contemporary aryens are?

  662. H.

  663. >> Yes. Jehovah's Witnesses. this is what

  664. they believe.

  665. So when they come knocking on your door

  666. next time, you can say, "Uh, well, I

  667. understand that you're modern day arryan

  668. and that's a heresy." And they're going

  669. to say, "What are you talking about?"

  670. Um, who are you? Um, but yes, they

  671. Jehovah's Witnesses literally believe

  672. that Jesus is not God. They believe he

  673. is um the incarnation of Michael the

  674. Archangel.

  675. God created uh him along with all the

  676. other angels and then sent him to Earth.

  677. uh but he's not God and the Holy Spirit

  678. is just God's spirit.

  679. So in response to that we see the

  680. scriptures clearly say no three are god

  681. there is one god and it's three father

  682. son and holy spirit and again those who

  683. don't hold to that belief cannot be

  684. called Christian.

  685. The third is

  686. anyone know

  687. modalism.

  688. Yeah, I know y'all did your homework.

  689. Modalism.

  690. Modalism is the heresy that uh there's

  691. one God who expresses himself in three

  692. different ways. So, it's close, but not

  693. quite. Right? It's that it's not that

  694. there's three persons, but three modes

  695. of God. He's a shape-shifting God. Okay?

  696. He's in father mode and then he shifts

  697. into son mode when he comes to the earth

  698. and then he's in the holy spirit mode

  699. when he's doing holy spirit stuff. Uh

  700. and so there's three different modes or

  701. or some would say manifestations of god

  702. but that he is not three simultaneously.

  703. And in response to that we see the

  704. scriptures clearly show no there are

  705. three distinct persons within the

  706. godhead.

  707. By the way, who are modern-day

  708. modalists?

  709. Does anyone know?

  710. Well, modern-day modalists are oneness

  711. Pentecostals.

  712. Oneness Pentecostals. This is not every

  713. Pentecostal. Let me be clear.

  714. Pentecostals,

  715. most Pentecostal, the majority of

  716. Pentecostals are brothers and sisters in

  717. Christ who believe in the triune God as

  718. the church has always believed, as the

  719. scriptures teach. Um, but Oneness

  720. Pentecostals are uh a distinct group

  721. from the rest of them. They're also

  722. known as the United Pentecostal Church.

  723. We have one just over there. Yes, we do.

  724. Right in town that the Turning Point

  725. Church is a United Pentecostal church

  726. and they are not trinitarians. May a lot

  727. of people don't know this and a lot of

  728. them probably don't even realize that

  729. about themselves, but this is the truth.

  730. Okay? And so we have to be mindful of

  731. that.

  732. Now, what's you're thinking? What's with

  733. all this ganging up on other religions,

  734. Michael? That's not like you. You don't

  735. normally do that sort of thing. I know I

  736. don't normally. This is out of character

  737. for me. It makes me uncomfortable. It

  738. makes me feel icky at times to talk

  739. about stuff like this. So, I get that.

  740. But we have to understand that this is a

  741. foundational belief. Okay? This is a

  742. core Christian doctrine. There are some

  743. things and over the course of this

  744. series, we're going to realize this that

  745. there's some beliefs that are openhand

  746. beliefs. They're they're beliefs that we

  747. hold with grace and patience and

  748. understanding for one another that we

  749. might not always agree on these things.

  750. Those are open-handed issues, right?

  751. Sort of side issues. They're still

  752. important, but they're not central. We

  753. can still call each other brothers and

  754. sisters in Christ and lovingly disagree

  755. on some of these things. We're going to

  756. talk about some of those things. Like

  757. next week for example when we talk about

  758. different ideas around how God created

  759. the world that's open hand that's okay

  760. but then there's some things that are

  761. closedhand

  762. these are things that are non comp uh

  763. compromisable is that a word we don't

  764. compromise on these things these are

  765. central core tenants of the church right

  766. and the trinity has always been

  767. understood by the church as central this

  768. is key that's why they were fighting

  769. about it like in 1700 years ago because

  770. they said we got to work this out. We

  771. got to know for sure what is truth

  772. because this is too important.

  773. So that's why I'm I'm saying this stuff.

  774. That being said, let's also approach all

  775. of this with a dose of humility because

  776. the truth is

  777. none of us have perfectly nailed our

  778. theology, right? We all probably have a

  779. little heresy in us. I think we're we're

  780. probably going to go to heaven. If you

  781. know Jesus, we're going to go to heaven

  782. one day and we're going to go, [sighs]

  783. "Oh,

  784. OH,

  785. OH, OKAY, that makes more sense." Or,

  786. "Oh, I never thought, oh, yeah, right. I

  787. think that's probably what's going to

  788. happen." So, we're not pointing fingers

  789. like this heretic guy up here. We're not

  790. doing that. We're not burning anyone at

  791. the stake. Okay, we're we're we're

  792. showing grace to one another. Um, the

  793. reality is, like I said at the

  794. beginning, God is the ocean and our

  795. brains are a cup. So, we need humility.

  796. God is indescribable, uncontainable,

  797. incomparable, untameable.

  798. The Trinity is hard to understand.

  799. And that's actually the thing about

  800. these doctrinal errors, right? is that

  801. each one in some way is trying to make

  802. sense of something in here that's hard

  803. to understand. Each one of these things

  804. is an effort to say, well, this makes

  805. sense, but this doesn't make sense or or

  806. this makes sense, but this doesn't make

  807. sense. So, it's erasing some part of

  808. this in some way. And you just can't do

  809. that.

  810. But I get it because it's it's hard to

  811. understand. As Augustine said, if you

  812. have comprehended it, it is not God.

  813. So concluding thought, here's a big idea

  814. that I want us to something we can take

  815. home from this.

  816. It's this that the Trinity reminds us

  817. that the very essence of God is love.

  818. It says in 1 John 4:16,

    1 John 4:16

  819. "God is love."

  820. And of course he is

  821. when he is himself

  822. in his very being a perfect community of

  823. love.

  824. Three in one in perfect harmony and

  825. unity, peace and joy.

  826. for all eternity past and eternity in

  827. the future. God is love. He is a of

  828. himself.

  829. Uh Pastor Greg Boyd says it this way.

  830. The revelation

  831. that God is an eternal loving divine

  832. community is the most foundational

  833. teaching of the Bible. For it reveals

  834. that God is in his very eternal nature

  835. perfect love. God is love. Love isn't me

  836. merely something God does. Perfect love

  837. is what God eternally is.

  838. The theologians have pointed out over

  839. the the centuries that the only way God

  840. can be love in his very essence is if

  841. God is in fact triune.

  842. If God is only one in person, then he

  843. was before creation without love. He had

  844. nothing to express love to. Right? If

  845. he's alone, how can you have love? And

  846. so he it the people sometimes think of

  847. God like that and think well that's why

  848. he created us right he created the

  849. universe so that he would have something

  850. or someone to love and something and

  851. someone who could love him in return.

  852. But no God did not need us.

  853. If God is three persons then for all

  854. eternity he has already known love

  855. before he ever created anything.

  856. So this for me when I first understood

  857. this like several years ago this was

  858. sort of mind-blowing for me because I'd

  859. always thought of that that you know God

  860. created us because he was lonely or he

  861. wanted worship. He wanted to be adored

  862. and so he created beings who would

  863. worship and adore him is that that's why

  864. we exist right actually he didn't need

  865. our worship and adoration. He already

  866. had that forever in eternity past within

  867. himself. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  868. perfect love and adoration.

  869. So, here's the big wow for me is that

  870. God didn't create us in order for him to

  871. experience our love.

  872. God created us in order for us to

  873. experience his love.

  874. God didn't create us. Let me say it

  875. again. In order for him to experience

  876. our love, God created us in order for us

  877. to experience his love.

  878. He wanted

  879. to share the love of the Trinity with

  880. us.

  881. We were created so that we can know the

  882. love of the triune Godhead.

  883. He doesn't need us. He's perfectly

  884. satisfied in and of himself. But he is

  885. generous. He is generous.

  886. And you and I are invited through the

  887. blood of Christ by the power of the Holy

  888. Spirit to have relationship with God, to

  889. have fellowship with the Trinity. Uh in

  890. 2 Peter 1:4 it says, "By his power, he

    2 Peter 1:4

  891. has granted to us his precious and very

  892. great promises. So so that through them

  893. you may become partakers of the divine

  894. nature." Think about that. [music] The

  895. ineffable God who completely satisfied

  896. in himself for eternity nonetheless

  897. longs for me and for you to be partakers

  898. of his divine nature

  899. which is love. In Jesus's prayer in John

  900. 17 when he he prayed for us and he said

  901. his prayer was that they may all be one

  902. just as you father and me are in me and

  903. I in you

  904. that they also may be in us so that the

  905. world may believe that you have sent me.

  906. Jesus wants us to partic participate in

  907. the love and fellowship of the trinity.

  908. Amazing. Amazing.

  909. So God is saying and this is what he's

  910. saying to you today. He's saying come

  911. come boldly

  912. to my throne of grace

  913. and let us father, son, and holy spirit

  914. wrap our arms around you. Come be part

  915. of this beautiful family. Come sit at

  916. our table and feast.

  917. What an incredible invitation.

  918. So I say that to you today. If you've

  919. never come to the table to feast, if

  920. you've never entered into relationship

  921. with our triune God through Christ and

  922. what he's done for you through faith in

  923. him, what are you waiting for?

  924. What are you waiting for?

  925. Come.

  926. And if you have before, you have

  927. fellowshipped in the sweetness of God's

  928. divine presence.

  929. Whether you are in that place now or

  930. maybe you've it's grown cold a bit and

  931. you feel distant from the Lord. Why

  932. don't you pull up a chair once again?

  933. And so,
