  1. So, what Christians believe is our

  2. series.

  3. Let me start with this. Have you ever

  4. had one of those weeks

  5. or maybe longer than a week? You don't

  6. even need the question. Is a Yes, I know

  7. where you're going with this. Where

  8. everything just is off. Everything is

  9. just going wrong.

  10. >> Tensions in relationships.

  11. You're irritable, uncharacteristically

  12. discouraged. temptation feels stronger

  13. than usual. Maybe you're in conflict

  14. with people out out of nowhere. Uh you

  15. feel unusually defeated.

  16. You start believing lies about yourself

  17. that you know aren't true.

  18. And you can't quite explain why

  19. everything feels heavier than it should.

  20. Anyone relate to that?

  21. >> Yeah, you have those times. Maybe more

  22. than a week, maybe a season.

  23. Well, what if there's more going on than

  24. what you can see with your eyes?

  25. >> As Christians, we believe that the world

  26. is more than material.

  27. We believe there is a spiritual realm, a

  28. spiritual dimension. And in that

  29. spiritual realm are spiritual enemies.

  30. Now, on Sundays lately, we've been

  31. spending a lot of time in the first part

  32. of the book of Genesis because so much

  33. theology finds its foundation in

  34. Genesis. And in the story of Adam and

  35. Eve in the garden,

  36. there's this serpent,

  37. a serpent who tempts Eve, a serpent who

  38. clearly has an evil agenda and

  39. manipulates Adam and Eve into

  40. disobedience.

  41. Who is this serpent?

  42. Well, the book of Revelation gives us a

  43. clue. And back at Christmas, I preached

  44. on this from Revelation 12. Remember I

  45. talked about the dragon?

  46. Revelation 12:9 says, "The great dragon

    Revelation 12:9

  47. was thrown down, that ancient serpent,

  48. who is called the devil and Satan, the

  49. deceiver of the whole world. He was

  50. thrown down to the earth and his angels

  51. were thrown down with him."

  52. this ancient serpent from way back in

  53. the Garden of Eden. That is the devil

  54. aka Satan. And that's what we are

  55. dealing with today in the message and

  56. our part five of our series. We're

  57. talking about our unseen enemy.

  58. What Christians believe about Satan and

  59. his demons.

  60. Who is Satan? Where did he come from?

  61. What does he do? What about those

  62. demons? Is all that stuff real? What

  63. does the Bible say?

  64. >> So, let's just take a minute and pray

  65. because I think we need extra prayer for

  66. this one.

  67. >> All right, let's just pray for a second.

  68. Father, the devil likes to be ignored.

  69. And so today, as we bring them up and

  70. expose him to the light, we pray your

  71. protection over us and as a church and

  72. myself as a pastor, Lord, that your Holy

  73. Spirit would be so present in this place

  74. that he has no opportunity at all to

  75. gain a foothold.

  76. So be with us now as we broach this

  77. topic in Christ's name. Amen.

  78. All right, let me let me be honest. This

  79. is one of those topics where

  80. non-believers hear us talking about this

  81. and they say those Christians are crazy,

  82. right?

  83. And I get why they feel that way because

  84. this is a weird topic. It's weird stuff.

  85. And it doesn't help that sometimes

  86. Christians really overplay the devil

  87. card, right? Some people think there's a

  88. demon behind every bush, right? You've

  89. heard that saying before, right? I've

  90. got a headache. Oh, it must be a demon.

  91. Right? Or I had a bad dream. Oh, the

  92. demons are after me. Or I didn't agree.

  93. I don't agree with that preacher. He's

  94. demonic. Uh or I stubbed my toe. Demon.

  95. Right? I mean,

  96. relax. Okay? Take it easy. Not

  97. everything bad in the world is the

  98. result of demons. There's no biblical

  99. justification for that way of thinking.

  100. At the same time, I think we can swing

  101. too far in the other direction

  102. and and I am guilty more often than not

  103. of being closer to that category where I

  104. just don't think all that much about the

  105. spiritual forces of darkness at work in

  106. the world. But the problem with that,

  107. the problem with ignoring Satan and his

  108. demons is twofold.

  109. one, you'll have to ignore huge sections

  110. of the Bible because Jesus spoke a lot

  111. about this. It this is everywhere in the

  112. scriptures, particularly in the ministry

  113. of Christ. Uh he spoke with Satan. He

  114. interacted with demons. A big part of

  115. his ministry involved casting out

  116. demons. In 1 John 3:8, it says, "The son

    1 John 3:8

  117. of God came to destroy the works of the

  118. devil."

  119. So like the core of his mission has to

  120. do with the forces, the evil forces of

  121. hell.

  122. So if you follow Jesus, you can't ignore

  123. this topic.

  124. But the second problem with ignoring the

  125. devil is that that's exactly what he

  126. wants.

  127. Right? There's a famous movie, I

  128. actually haven't seen it, but uh it's

  129. The Usual Suspects. And there's a famous

  130. line in the usual suspects says, "The

  131. greatest trick the devil ever pulled was

  132. convincing the world he didn't exist."

  133. Satan is winning when he's able to

  134. influence us subtly and secretly to

  135. deceive and distract and divide without

  136. us even realizing he's doing it. So if

  137. you are ignoring Satan, he's quite happy

  138. about that.

  139. So balance on this topic is really

  140. important

  141. that we're not scared. We're not fixated

  142. on it, but also not ignoring it, not

  143. living as if the demonic world is make

  144. believe.

  145. CS Lewis, uh, the great author of many

  146. things, including the Screw Tape

  147. Letters, which is an interesting, um,

  148. book that portrays a a fictional

  149. conversation between two demons. uh in

  150. his in the preface of his book he writes

  151. there are two equal and opposite errors

  152. into which our race being humans can

  153. fall about devils. One is to disbelieve

  154. in their existence. The other is to

  155. believe and to feel an excessive and

  156. unhealthy interest in them.

  157. Amen. So, at the end of this message,

  158. I'm going to give you a a good way to

  159. think about the reality of the demonic

  160. that will help you find that right

  161. balance.

  162. But first, let's see what the Bible can

  163. tell us about who Satan is, what demons

  164. are, and so on. If we're going to stand

  165. against our enemy, we need to know our

  166. enemy.

  167. So, let's start with his name. We call

  168. him Satan because the word used to

  169. describe him in the Old Testament is

  170. Satan. The Hebrew word Satan. In the New

  171. Testament, a similar word is used. It's

  172. a it's a transliteration of the Hebrew

  173. um which means it's not translated. It's

  174. just they take the Hebrew and they make

  175. a new word uh in the Greek. And the word

  176. is Satanis. Uh he's also called

  177. Diabolas.

  178. Uh all of these words mean uh accuser,

  179. adversary,

  180. the images of a of a prosecuting

  181. attorney attacking you, uh accusing you

  182. of things, tearing you down on the

  183. witness stand, making you feel like

  184. trash.

  185. Uh Diabolo specifically means false

  186. accuser or slanderer.

  187. Interestingly, I think in contrast,

  188. the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is

  189. is there's a word to describe him that

  190. is pariclete, which means advocate or

  191. counselor,

  192. the one who stands up for us against our

  193. accuser. So, if if the devil is like a

  194. prosecuting attorney who's ripping into

  195. us and trying to tear us down, the Holy

  196. Spirit is like the defense attorney

  197. who's defending us, standing for truth.

  198. Isn't that cool? Um,

  199. what are some other names and titles

  200. that are used for the devil or for

  201. Satan? Uh, these are some that we find

  202. in the New Testament. The evil one in

  203. Matthew 13. John 12, the ruler of this

  204. world. In 2 Corinthians, the god of this

  205. age. Ephesians 2, the prince of the

  206. power of the air. Matthew 4, tempter.

  207. Mark 3, be elabub. You've heard that

  208. before. Beub right in the

  209. Bohemian Rap City. Got any Queen fans?

  210. All right. Beub literally means Lord of

  211. the Flies. You ever read that book, Lord

  212. of the Flies? Yeah, that's literally

  213. what Beelub means. It's a title for

  214. Satan. Um, Matthew 13:39,

    Matthew 13:39

  215. the enemy. In 2 Corinthians, bile

  216. meaning worthless. Revelation 12, which

  217. we read, deceiver and great dragon. And

  218. in John 8, he's called the father of

  219. lies and murderer.

  220. So I think that paints a pretty clear

  221. picture of him. Um there's some language

  222. there that of of him being a prince and

  223. a ruler and a god which tells us that he

  224. has influence and power

  225. and then other language that's calls him

  226. the deceiver, the father of lies and so

  227. on which implies that he is wicked, he's

  228. evil.

  229. So I think we can get a sense there just

  230. from his titles that are used. Now, a

  231. question that a lot of people wonder as

  232. they dig into this is, well, where did

  233. Satan come from? Where did he come from?

  234. What's his origin story?

  235. Well, to be to be honest, the Bible is

  236. not 100% clear on this.

  237. Uh, we do know a few things. We know

  238. that God alone is eternal, that God

  239. created everything.

  240. And so we can say with certainty that

  241. Satan did not coexist with God into

  242. eternity past. He is not equal to God.

  243. Um he has he must have been created by

  244. God. Part of God's original good design.

  245. And even though the scriptures are again

  246. not super clear, what's generally been

  247. accepted by the church is the idea that

  248. Satan began as an angel.

  249. Probably a a powerful and beautiful

  250. angel. He started great. And like human

  251. beings, God gave the angels free will.

  252. And this angel became proud and envious

  253. and used his free will to choose to

  254. reject God's will. and God's purposes

  255. and to follow his own agenda in pursuit

  256. of his own glory and in doing so

  257. rebelled against God leading to his

  258. banishment from heaven and his descent

  259. into evil.

  260. So that is basically the story. Uh I

  261. know it sounds like the plot of a fairy

  262. tale but it is probably the best

  263. understanding we can come to through the

  264. scriptures about the origin of Satan

  265. with the limited information that we

  266. have. We do have a few places in

  267. scripture we can look to for guidance on

  268. this. One passage is Isaiah 14.

  269. This is the passage that where the title

  270. Lucifer is used and people think of that

  271. as being maybe his angelic name. Um so

  272. that's passage has been traditionally

  273. used as a part of piecing together the

  274. origin story of Satan. Uh I don't think

  275. I'm not convinced that that passage is

  276. actually talking about the devil. It's

  277. not clear. It could be, but I I'm not

  278. convinced of that. Um, another is

  279. Ezekiel 28 11-19. This one's a little

  280. stronger than Isaiah 14, but it's still

  281. a bit of a stretch to assume it's

  282. referencing Satan's story. So, those

  283. aren't crystal clear, but maybe a little

  284. more clear is some words of Jesus in

  285. Luke 10. Um, this is a uh he says this

  286. right after the 72 uh disciples of Jesus

  287. that he sent out on a missions trip. uh

  288. they come back and they report to Jesus

  289. about the things that happened and the

  290. things that they they did and says when

  291. the 72 disciples returned they joyfully

  292. reported to him Lord even the demons

  293. obey us when we use your name

  294. and Jesus says yes he told them I saw

  295. Satan fall from heaven like lightning

  296. now it's not clear again it's not clear

  297. right none of this is really clear but

  298. it's not clear if Jesus means yeah when

  299. you guys were out fighting against

  300. demons, I could see Satan falling in the

  301. in that present tense. I could see him

  302. losing spiritual battles or if he means

  303. yes and I was there. I tell you what, I

  304. was there way back in prehistory when

  305. Satan fell from heaven in the ancient

  306. past.

  307. So, we don't know. But either way, the

  308. image of of Satan falling from heaven

  309. is probably the closest we can come to

  310. understanding how he came about. That at

  311. one point he was glorious and good. He

  312. was part of God's good original design

  313. for the universe, for all of creation.

  314. And he fell from heaven. He fell from

  315. glory.

  316. Now, the origin of demons, those minions

  317. of Satan, is another question to which

  318. answers are not abundantly clear, how

  319. they came about.

  320. There have been two main views in

  321. Christian history about the origin of

  322. demons. The fallen angels view and the

  323. Nephilim view. This is going to get

  324. weird, folks. Okay, so the first view

  325. became the dominant one in the church,

  326. especially in the West. And it says that

  327. demons are simply fallen angels like

  328. Satan.

  329. This view sees passages like Revelation

  330. 12 where the dragon is thrown down and

  331. his angels with him. It says as

  332. describing a a cosmic rebellion. Demons

  333. then are angels just like Satan was

  334. created good who fell through pride and

  335. now oppose God and his people. In

  336. Matthew 25, Jesus refers to the devil

  337. and his angels.

  338. So this became the the prominent view in

  339. in the church uh when St. Augustine

  340. strongly argued for this position and he

  341. was very influential and uh and from

  342. that point on most of Christianity has

  343. followed his lead.

  344. But there is another view and this one

  345. not too many people know about I don't

  346. think although I'm hearing more about it

  347. these days and this goes back to uh it's

  348. actually it predates the fallen angels

  349. view. goes back to early Jewish

  350. tradition, pre-Christ

  351. and uh and some early church fathers,

  352. and it connects demons to Genesis

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  353. chapter 6, right before the story of the

  354. flood. If you've read this, you probably

  355. scratched your head a little bit when

  356. you read this. It says this in Genesis

  357. 6, the sons of God saw that the

  358. daughters of man were attractive, and

  359. they took as their wives any they chose.

  360. The Nephilim were on the earth in those

  361. days and also afterward when the sons of

  362. God came into the daughters of man and

  363. they bore children to them. These were

  364. the mighty men who were of old, the

  365. mighty men of renown.

  366. So many Jewish interpreters before and

  367. around the time of Jesus understood the

  368. sons of God in this story to be

  369. referring to angels,

  370. fallen angels who procreated with human

  371. women, creating these special species of

  372. human called Nephilim,

  373. who were the mighty men and giants and

  374. things of that time period. Um, now that

  375. sounds weird. There's a book called

  376. First Enoch, which is not in the Bible,

  377. but it's an ancient ancient text, um,

  378. that ex expands on this story. It really

  379. emphasizes this story. And, you know,

  380. you might think, well, okay, I don't

  381. know what to make of that, but the New

  382. Testament actually lends some

  383. credibility to uh this story, to the

  384. angels uh sleeping with women

  385. interpretation of Genesis 6. uh the

  386. short book of Jude in the New Testament

  387. right before the book of Revelation uh

  388. references actually it quotes first

  389. Enoch at one point which is interesting.

  390. Um but in Jude 6 it say it refers to the

  391. angels who did not stay within their own

  392. position of authority but left their

  393. proper dwelling and interpreters over

  394. the years have understood that to be

  395. making reference to this thing from

  396. Genesis 6 where angels slept with women

  397. and out came the Nephilim and second

  398. Peter. Similarly, God did not spare

  399. angels when they sinned, the words of

  400. Peter there.

  401. Um, so early Christians like Justin

  402. Martyr and Irenaeus connected those

  403. passages to the story of Genesis 6 and

  404. added, so here's where the demon thing

  405. comes into play. um and added as the

  406. book of Enoch

  407. suggests that demons then could be the

  408. disembodied spirits of dead Nephilim.

  409. What? Yeah, this is a this is a this is

  410. a legitimate theory that has been taught

  411. over the years. Um demons could be the

  412. disembodied spirits of dead Nephilim.

  413. Now, that there is a theological rabbit

  414. hole that you can go down sometime when

  415. you're looking for a couple hours to

  416. kill on a Saturday morning or something

  417. and explore that. It sounds weird. So,

  418. which is right? Which is right? Well,

  419. faithful Christians have held both

  420. views. I don't know which one is right,

  421. but let's just say we don't really know

  422. clearly how we got the devil and his

  423. demons. But we can say this, I think

  424. quite confidently that the devil is a

  425. created spiritual being who is opposed

  426. to God and is the leader of other evil

  427. spirits called demons who join him in

  428. that work. We can say that with

  429. confidence. The origin story is a little

  430. muddier.

  431. What else can we know? Well, we know

  432. that there's things that they can do and

  433. things that they cannot do. We know that

  434. they have free will, but we also know

  435. that there's limits to that. They cannot

  436. overtake God's authority. God has final

  437. say. They have great knowledge, but

  438. there's limits to that. They're not

  439. omnisient like God is. They're not all

  440. knowing. They have great power, but

  441. there's limits to that. They're not

  442. omnipotent. They're not all powerful

  443. like God is. And there are myriads of

  444. them, but there's a limit because not

  445. one of them is omnipresent or everywhere

  446. at the same time as God is. So we don't

  447. need to be afraid, folks, because Satan

  448. and his demons are not equal to God,

  449. right? It's not like sometimes we

  450. imagine this dichotomy of of of God and

  451. the devil and they're equal and they're

  452. fighting and we hope that God wins or

  453. like you know the light versus the dark

  454. and and we just hope that in the end the

  455. light wins. No, that's not what we

  456. believe as Christians. They are not

  457. equal. Satan is uh he's he's on a leash,

  458. okay? And there will be a time when his

  459. time is over.

  460. Now, what are Satan and his demons doing

  461. in the meantime before that time comes

  462. when God says enough is enough? What are

  463. they doing or what are they trying to

  464. do? Well, Satan hates God, but he has no

  465. power to attack God. So, he attacks us,

  466. those who bear his image. He hates us in

  467. in instead of God in in God's place. So,

  468. so his tactics are designed to attack

  469. us.

  470. And I say I'll say there's four Ds.

  471. Satan's playing 4 D chess. All right?

  472. And the four the first D of Satan's

  473. tactics is deception.

  474. In and we go back to the garden, right,

  475. in Genesis 3. His original tactic was

  476. deception. Did God really say that you

  477. can't eat from that fruit? Did God

  478. really say, "Come on, really?" Right? to

  479. raise doubts, to deceive us, to try to

  480. uh cause us to question God's authority.

  481. He still works like that. Uh, as we've

  482. already identified, he's called the

  483. father of lies. In John 8, in 2

  484. Corinthians 11, it says that the devil

  485. disguises himself as an angel of light.

  486. He disguises himself as an angel of

  487. light. In other words, he's he's trying

  488. to convince people that his way is the

  489. good way. He tempts us in ways that seem

  490. appealing. Right? Have you noticed that

  491. the things that we're tempted to do are

  492. things that Well, that would be fun,

  493. wouldn't it? To do that thing.

  494. That would be enjoyable. I think I'd

  495. like that.

  496. >> Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

  497. >> Yeah. And the Yeah. And the scars.

  498. So deception is still one of his main

  499. tactics. Distraction is another great

  500. tactic.

  501. He wants to distract you from

  502. Sorry.

  503. Oh, right. Sorry, got distracted there.

  504. Um, he wants to distract you from Jesus.

  505. He wants to distract you from the truth.

  506. He wants to distract you from the gospel

  507. and from the kingdom of God and his

  508. mission.

  509. He wants you to give your li life to

  510. other priorities and activities that

  511. demand your attention. He wants to waste

  512. your time. Time is precious and Satan

  513. wants you to waste it. These are tactics

  514. of Satan and his demons. Uh I think

  515. about the parable of the sewer which has

  516. been preached here many times over the

  517. last few years and some of the seeds in

  518. that story fall on the the footpath and

  519. birds come along and eat up that seed

  520. take root. They don't have a chance to

  521. take root. The birds come and eat them

  522. up. And it says in when Jesus is

  523. explaining this parable, he says, he

  524. says, "Some seeds fall on the foot path

  525. and then the evil one comes and snatches

  526. away the seed that was planted in their

  527. hearts."

  528. Yes, this is distraction. This is him

  529. coming and not letting God's word and

  530. God's truth get a foundation in our

  531. lives because we're too distracted.

  532. Division is another of Satan's tactics.

  533. When we allow anger and hatred to divide

  534. us, the Bible tells us we are giving

  535. Satan a foothold in our lives. In

  536. Ephesians 4, it says, "In your anger, do

  537. not sin. Do not let the sun go down

  538. while you are still angry and do not

  539. give the devil a foothold."

  540. Do not give the devil a foothold in your

  541. anger.

  542. He wants to divide us. He wants to pit

  543. us against each other. Husbands against

  544. wives, kids against parents, race

  545. against race, ideology against ideology,

  546. party against party.

  547. We live in very divisive times,

  548. very polarized

  549. times, and Satan is pleased with that.

  550. He especially seeks to divide the

  551. church, to weaken our impact.

  552. Let's get wise to these tactics.

  553. Um, this June, Julia and I are

  554. celebrating 20 years of marriage. 20

  555. years.

  556. >> I assume that applause is for her.

  557. >> Good job, Julia. You did it.

  558. Um, I remember early in our in our

  559. marriage, uh, there were some very

  560. difficult times. I think a lot of people

  561. can relate to that that when you're

  562. starting out, especially when you're

  563. young, you know, we we got married

  564. young. I was 21 and she was 22. Yeah.

  565. And um,

  566. >> you know, we were still growing up,

  567. right? We grew up together and still

  568. trying to understand each other. And I

  569. remember having someone say to us at

  570. some point and because there was, you

  571. know, conflict and that sort of stuff

  572. and not not understanding each other,

  573. someone said to us, "The real enemy in

  574. your marriage is not your spouse.

  575. It's Satan."

  576. >> Yeah. And that is so helpful, I think,

  577. right? Because if you're in conflict

  578. with someone that you love, think for a

  579. second, you know, where is this division

  580. really coming from?

  581. And it's amazing how quickly, it's

  582. amazing how quickly you can start seeing

  583. the person you love as the enemy when

  584. the enemy, the real enemy is the unseen

  585. enemy feeding the fire.

  586. That applies to all sorts of

  587. relationships. you division of are you

  588. experiencing division in your workplace,

  589. in your church, in your culture, in your

  590. family, in your neighborhood, whatever

  591. it might be. Remember who the real enemy

  592. is. He's seeking to divide us.

  593. Is when we are divided we are weak.

  594. What's that saying? Uh united we stand,

  595. divided we fall. Yeah.

  596. And then the other thing I think that

  597. well I know that the devil does is

  598. demonization. What do I what do I mean

  599. by that? I mean demon possession and

  600. demon oppression.

  601. Let's talk about demon possession. First

  602. of all, we see plenty of examples of

  603. this in the New Testament. People being

  604. possessed, literally possessed by

  605. demons.

  606. Um, and we see Jesus, of course, very

  607. involved in casting demons out of

  608. people. And demon possession is not just

  609. something that happened in the first

  610. century in the New Testament. It's still

  611. happening today. Uh when we were when

  612. Hannah, Pastor Hannah and I were in um

  613. Lebanon,

  614. we were touring uh the grounds of this

  615. amazing uh facility where they're doing

  616. ministry and reaching out to the

  617. community. And they as they were showing

  618. us building by building, they said, "And

  619. this building over here, this is the one

  620. uh where we cast demons out of people."

  621. And you know, of course, in our western

  622. mind, we were like, "What?" Like, okay,

  623. that's not that's not normal for us. Um

  624. uh and I remember thinking man like

  625. demon possession uh over in this part of

  626. the world is not just an interesting

  627. sermon topic right it's live it's live

  628. it's lived reality

  629. I think this is demonp possessed

  630. yeah so it's still happening and I agree

  631. with now I agree with those who say that

  632. Christians cannot be demonp possessed.

  633. So don't worry about this. Some people

  634. go, "Oh, I'm going to be demonp

  635. possessed." If you have the Holy Spirit

  636. in you, right? You can't be

  637. demonpossessed.

  638. But anyone can be demon oppressed.

  639. Oppressed.

  640. This is sort of what I'm talking about

  641. like at what I said at the start of the

  642. message where we have these seasons

  643. where it's just one thing after another

  644. after another after another. Non-stop

  645. problems. You're discouraged. You feel

  646. defeated. You're overwhelmed. Maybe

  647. addiction is re rearing its ugly head

  648. again. Temptation is strong. Illness is

  649. afflicting you. Everything that could go

  650. wrong is going wrong.

  651. I think it's possible in those moments

  652. that you may be experiencing some form

  653. of demonic oppression.

  654. So, I think we need to be aware of that.

  655. Call it what it is.

  656. And what do we do? What do we do when

  657. we're being attacked by the devil in any

  658. of these ways with deceit, deception,

  659. distraction, division, or even worse,

  660. demonization of some sort? What do we

  661. do? Well, absolutely we pray. I think

  662. first of all, we need to be watchful. We

  663. need to be aware. We need to pay

  664. attention.

  665. be aware of the spiritual realities

  666. because as I said earlier, the the first

  667. mistake is ignoring the devil. He's

  668. happy if if we're ignoring him. So being

  669. aware in First Peter 5'8 it says, "Be

  670. sober minded. Be watchful. Your

  671. adversary, the devil, prowls around like

  672. a roaring lion seeking someone to

  673. devour."

  674. Or as the theologian Carl Bart said it,

  675. and I like this. He said, "Satan and the

  676. demonic are always at work in, with, and

  677. under the things of our world like the

  678. tentacles of an octopus."

  679. So, be watchful. Be watchful.

  680. And then be prepared.

  681. Ephesians 6 says, "We do not wrestle

  682. against Well, let me read it. I'm going

  683. to read it from the from the whole I

  684. want to read the whole passage.

  685. Ephesians 6

  686. uh

  687. 12 to

  688. 10 to 17. Thank you.

  689. Says a final word. Be strong in the Lord

  690. and in his mighty power. Put on all of

  691. God's armor so that you will be able to

  692. stand firm against all strategies of the

  693. devil. For we are not fighting against

  694. flesh and blood enemies, but against

  695. evil rulers and authorities of the

  696. unseen world, against mighty powers in

  697. this dark world, and against evil

  698. spirits in the heavenly places.

  699. Therefore, put on every piece of God's

  700. armor, so you will be able to resist the

  701. enemy in the time of evil. And then

  702. after the battle, you will still be

  703. standing firm. Stand your ground,

  704. putting on the belt of truth and the

  705. body armor of God's righteousness. For

  706. shoes, put on the peace that comes from

  707. the good news so that you will be fully

  708. prepared. In addition to all of these,

  709. hold up the shield of faith to stop the

  710. fiery arrows of the devil and put on

  711. salvation as your helmet and take the

  712. sword of the spirit which is the word of

  713. God.

  714. Right? And then he says, "Pray in the

  715. spirit and at all times and on every

  716. occasion stay alert and be persistent in

  717. your prayers for all believers

  718. everywhere." So you see the armor of

  719. God, right? We've got to put on all of

  720. God's armor. Every piece when you get up

  721. in the morning and you head out into the

  722. world and all that you will face, put on

  723. the armor of God. Don't go into the

  724. world unprotected.

  725. Put on the armor, prayer,

  726. the word of God, salvation. I mean,

  727. that's step one, right? To be saved,

  728. >> be filled with the Holy Spirit, and so

  729. on.

  730. >> They take it off, pastor.

  731. >> Do who take what off?

  732. >> I put on the full armor of God.

  733. >> Well, I mean, I guess when you're

  734. sleeping, you can't be mindful, but I

  735. mean, whatever. Um, maybe you don't ever

  736. take it off. That would be even better.

  737. Sleep in the armor, too.

  738. Um, okay. So, all of this, you know,

  739. when we hear these these scriptures and

  740. we talk like this, it can start to for

  741. some of us anyway, make us a little bit

  742. scared, a little bit nervous, like, ah,

  743. maybe I shouldn't even bother go outside

  744. uh because the world is so evil. Well,

  745. here's another important point. Do not

  746. be afraid. Do not be afraid.

  747. If we could have a a a special pair of

  748. of glasses to look into the spiritual

  749. realm, what would we see?

  750. Well, we may have an answer to that

  751. question from a story found in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 6 chapter mention

  752. chapter 6 in the time of the prophet

  753. Elisha. Israel is surrounded in the

  754. story by a huge army from a neighboring

  755. country that was coming to attack them

  756. and they were small in number. And

  757. Elisha's servant comes to him terrified.

  758. And this is what it says in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 6 chapter mention

  759. chapter 6. When the servant of the man

  760. of God got up early the next morning and

  761. went outside, there were troops, horses,

  762. and chariots everywhere. Oh sir, what

  763. will we do now? The young man cried to

  764. Elisha.

  765. Don't be afraid, Elisha told him, for

  766. there are more on our side than on

  767. theirs.

  768. And then Elisha prayed, "Oh Lord, open

  769. his eyes and let him see."

  770. And the Lord opened the young man's

  771. eyes. And when he looked up, he saw that

  772. the hillside around Elisha was filled

  773. with horses and chariots of fire.

  774. Can you imagine? He got to put on those

  775. spiritual glasses for a moment and when

  776. he looked, he could see the host of

  777. heaven, the angel armies of God prepared

  778. to fight for them.

  779. God gave him a glimpse into the

  780. spiritual realm. And Elisha says, "Hey

  781. man,

  782. chill out, man. Don't be afraid

  783. for there are more on our side. When you

  784. count the angels, there are more on our

  785. side than on theirs." Or as the Apostle

  786. John puts it in 1 John 4, greater is he

  787. that is in you than he that is in the

  788. world. Greater is the Holy Spirit that

  789. dwells within you than any evil force of

  790. hell that is in the world. So remember

  791. the authority that we have in Christ. If

  792. you are a Christian, use the authority

  793. of Christ in you to rebuke Satan and his

  794. demons in the name of Jesus. Remind him

  795. that he's a loser.

  796. Right? In Colossians 2:15, it says,

    Colossians 2:15

  797. "Jesus disarmed the spiritual rulers and

  798. authorities. He shamed them publicly by

  799. his victory over them on the cross."

  800. He's already secured the victory.

  801. And in Revelation, we can read about

  802. God's plan for him. He's going to lose.

  803. Yeah. The battle rages on today, but the

  804. final outcome of the war has already

  805. been decided. As Romans 16:20 says, "The

    Romans 16:20

  806. God of peace will soon crush Satan

  807. underneath your feet." There's a song,

  808. right? The God of peace will soon crush

  809. Satan where God will crush him where?

  810. underneath your feet. Yeah,

  811. remember that.

  812. >> We're gonna stamp him out with the power

  813. of God in the end.

  814. So, when Satan reminds you of your past,

  815. you remind him of his future. We might

  816. not be certain about Satan's origins,

  817. but we are crystal clear on his destiny.

  818. Okay, I promised you at the start that I

  819. was going to um give you a good way to

  820. think about how we should get this

  821. balance right between awareness and

  822. watchfulness and preparedness and also

  823. not being afraid. And I think a good way

  824. for us to think about that is that Satan

  825. and his demons are like germs.

  826. Germs.

  827. They're nasty.

  828. They're ugly.

  829. They're everywhere.

  830. and they seek our destruction.

  831. But should we be afraid of germs?

  832. Right? You don't panic about germs. Now,

  833. some people have obsessivempulsive

  834. disorder and they do panic about germs

  835. and they're always washing their hands

  836. and I and I get that that's a real issue

  837. that people have, but we see that as a

  838. problem, not as as as the right thing

  839. that we we shouldn't have that mindset,

  840. right? And you shouldn't have OCD. You

  841. shouldn't be obsessive. You shouldn't

  842. have obsessive compulsive demon disorder

  843. either, right? Just like you don't

  844. obsess about germs, you shouldn't obsess

  845. about demons and and Satan. But also,

  846. you don't ignore them, right? Remember

  847. when COVID happened and we all learned

  848. how to prevent ourselves from getting

  849. sick, right? Wash your hands, take

  850. precautions.

  851. And so, look, if you're at for if you if

  852. you are at war with the forces of hell,

  853. as we are, yes, take precautions. Wash

  854. your spiritual hands. Pay attention. Be

  855. prepared. But do not be afraid.

  856. Fix your eyes on Jesus and tell the

  857. devil where to go.

  858. >> Amen.
