  1. All right. So, today we're wrapping up

  2. our series, What Christians Believe.

  3. It's been 15 weeks in this, and

  4. hopefully you've learned a few things

  5. along the way. Maybe some of your views

  6. and things were challenged a little bit.

  7. That's that's good. It's good to do

  8. that. It's good to um be stretched a

  9. little bit outside of what of what we

  10. always have understood things to be and

  11. learn and grow. Hopefully, a lot of

  12. things have been affirmed for you as

  13. well. Um, and that uh, yeah, that you

  14. walk away from this series uh, stronger

  15. in your knowledge of God, but not just

  16. your head knowledge, also your heart

  17. knowledge. That's the hope. Um, we're

  18. wrapping up our series by having a look

  19. at the at la last things. What

  20. Christians believe about the future.

  21. Last week, we covered three main events.

  22. We covered the the return of Jesus, the

  23. second coming of Christ, and what will

  24. happen when that happens, the

  25. resurrection of everyone, and the

  26. judgment. And at the time of the

  27. judgment, Jesus separates the saved from

  28. the unsaved, those who belong to Christ

  29. from those who don't belong to Christ.

  30. He puts it in a parable at one point,

  31. separating the wheat from the weeds,

  32. taking the weeds out. Um, and in Matthew

  33. 25, he talks about it as separating the

  34. sheep from the goats. All imagery to

  35. illustrate this separating this that's

  36. going to happen when he comes and judges

  37. the world. So what the question then for

  38. today is what happens next after the

  39. judgment. Then what happens? And we get

  40. a hint of that in Matthew 25. If we were

  41. to keep reading or in parts of this

  42. parable that he talks about the parable

  43. of the sheep and the goats, he says,

  44. "Then the king will say to those on his

  45. right, that being the sheep, come you

  46. who are blessed by my father, inherit

  47. the kingdom prepared for you from the

  48. creation of the world."

  49. And then the king will turn to those on

  50. the left, that's the goats, and say,

  51. "Away with you, you cursed ones, into

  52. the eternal fire prepared for the devil

  53. and his demons." And they will go away

  54. into eternal punishment, but the

  55. righteous will go into eternal life. So

  56. we see this contrast. So today we talk

  57. about the world to come

  58. as we look at the final states, better

  59. known as heaven and hell.

  60. On a snowy day in March of 2017,

  61. an 18-year-old man from the Netherlands

  62. named Milan Skipper Shipper, not sure

  63. how to say it, uh, landed in Sydney,

  64. Cape Breton for a dream vacation.

  65. He had planned and prepped for weeks and

  66. was so looking forward to some time away

  67. to relax. The only problem is he never

  68. intended to go to Sydney, Cape Breton.

  69. He intended to go to Sydney, a Yeah,

  70. that's right. Now, apparently, from what

  71. I was reading about this, this happens a

  72. lot. Actually, people do this

  73. frequently, more than you'd think. In

  74. the CBC news story I was reading about

  75. it, it says that he realized the mistake

  76. too late when he was when he boarded a

  77. plane at a stopover in Toronto. Uh, and

  78. instead of heading west, the little tiny

  79. plane he thought was this plane is very

  80. small to be taking me from Toronto to

  81. Australia. But nevertheless, this I'm

  82. sure they know what they're doing. Um,

  83. and the plane started heading east

  84. instead. And he says this quote, "I felt

  85. terrible. I think I swore in my head for

  86. like 10 minutes, but there was nothing I

  87. could do about it because I was already

  88. up in the air.

  89. Now, that's a funny story, but I think

  90. it can remind us of a more serious

  91. truth.

  92. And this short life that we have, 80

  93. years, 90, 100 if we're blessed, is a

  94. little bit like an airport terminal.

  95. And when you're in the terminal, while

  96. you're still there, there's still time

  97. to choose your destination. There's

  98. conversations happening, tickets being

  99. offered, decisions being made. But

  100. eventually, the gate closes, the flight

  101. departs, and your destination is

  102. settled. No turning back.

  103. The scriptures give us no indication

  104. anywhere that there's a second chance

  105. after death to redirect our destination.

  106. Some people hope that there is. Right?

  107. People like the Catholics have created

  108. this idea of um purgatory, but it's it's

  109. a wishful thinking. The Bible doesn't

  110. talk about that at all. What the Bible

  111. actually says is people are destined to

  112. die once and after that to face

  113. judgment.

  114. That's about as clear as it gets.

  115. So, this is the time here and now

  116. where we need to get our destination

  117. sorted out before we die because once

  118. we're dead, we're on the plane and

  119. there's no going back.

  120. What the Bible teaches is that after

  121. Christ returns and all are resurrected

  122. to face his judgment, as we talked about

  123. last week, then there's two options.

  124. There's two potential destinations.

  125. Heaven, also known as the kingdom of

  126. God, or hell.

  127. So, let's spend some time discussing

  128. both of these places. Heaven and hell,

  129. what the Bible teaches, what Christians

  130. believe. Our main text today is the book

  131. of Revelation.

  132. And Revelation is uh Revelation is an

  133. interesting book. It's a symbolic vision

  134. given to John the Apostle while he was

  135. exiled on the island of Patmos. Its

  136. purpose is not to give us a detailed

  137. timeline of future events as some people

  138. think it is, but it's to reveal

  139. spiritual realities through vivid

  140. imagery and symbols. It sort of pulls

  141. back the curtain so we can see what's

  142. really going on behind the scenes

  143. spiritually. The word revelation that we

  144. translate revelation uh literally means

  145. an unveiling.

  146. And the book concludes in the last two

  147. and a half chapters with what God will

  148. ultimately do in the world. And so we're

  149. going to we're going to look at the end

  150. of the book of Revelation. And we will

  151. start with the bad news part because

  152. that's what the book of Revelation does

  153. in Revelation 20.

  154. Revelation 20. So, let's have a look at

  155. what the Bible teaches regarding hell.

  156. And obviously, we're not going to look

  157. at every single scripture on hell today,

  158. but we're going to see what Revelation

  159. says, at least starting at verse 11.

  160. And this is, as I said last Sunday, I

  161. talked about the great white throne

  162. judgment of unbelievers. That's what

  163. this is talking about. So, it says verse

  164. 11, I saw a great white throne

  165. and the one sitting on it, that's Jesus.

  166. He's the judge. The earth and sky fled

  167. from his presence, but they found no

  168. place to hide. Nobody wants to be at the

  169. great white throne judgment, but there's

  170. no escaping it. I saw the dead, both

  171. great and small, standing before God's

  172. throne. And the books were opened,

  173. including the book of life. And the dead

  174. were judged according to what they had

  175. done as recorded in the books. The sea

  176. gave up its dead

  177. and death and the grave or hades gave up

  178. their dead and all were judged according

  179. to their deeds. Then death and the grave

  180. were thrown into the lake of fire. This

  181. lake of fire is the second death and

  182. anyone whose name was not found recorded

  183. in the book of life was thrown into the

  184. lake of fire.

  185. Now, that's that paints a pretty clear

  186. picture that after the resurrection and

  187. the judgment at the great white throne

  188. of Jesus, anyone whose name is not found

  189. written in the book of life, it says, is

  190. cast into the lake of fire.

  191. Now, that raises a couple questions for

  192. me as I read that. Maybe it raises some

  193. questions for you, too. The first one it

  194. raises for me is, well, who is written

  195. in this book of life? what are the what

  196. is the determining factor there and then

  197. the second question is and what is the

  198. nature of this lake of fire so let's

  199. answer those questions and I think the

  200. answer to the first question is fairly

  201. straightforward

  202. uh the book of because the book of life

  203. isn't the only time that we see this

  204. concept mentioned in the scriptures

  205. there it's a few other places in the

  206. Bible as well

  207. when we look at those examples it gives

  208. us a it gives us the answer who was

  209. written in the book of life well in

  210. Philippians 4 the apostle So Paul is

  211. talking about his fellow believers,

  212. fellow Christians, and he describes them

  213. as those whose names are in the book of

  214. life. In Luke 10, Jesus tells his

  215. disciples,

  216. "Rejoice that your names are written in

  217. heaven." He's talking to his followers.

  218. And in Revelation 13, it says that all

  219. people who belong to this world are the

  220. ones whose names were not written in the

  221. book of life that belongs to the lamb.

  222. What seems clear from these passages and

  223. in keeping with all of the New Testament

  224. teachings around what it means to be

  225. saved,

  226. those whose names are in the book are

  227. those who trust in Christ as their

  228. savior and follow him. They are in

  229. Christ. Paul describes or they belong to

  230. Christ as the apostle Paul often puts it

  231. in his letters and those who do not

  232. belong to Christ belong to the world

  233. this world

  234. and those are the ones who are not

  235. written in the book of life those who

  236. still belong to this world and so the

  237. ones who are in the lamb's book of life

  238. are fellow believers disciples

  239. Christians

  240. and those uh the ones who are not in the

  241. written written in the lamb's book of

  242. life it says in revelation 20 are cast

  243. into the lake of fire aka hell. Gehenna

  244. in the Greek.

  245. Okay, so that seems fairly obvious as we

  246. read the we read the New Testament as a

  247. whole, we can get this sense of what it

  248. means to be written in the book of life.

  249. It's to trust in Christ.

  250. The more difficult question to answer,

  251. the more complicated question to answer

  252. maybe is the second question. What is

  253. the nature of the lake of fire?

  254. And here's the thing. I don't think we

  255. should rely on some of the images that

  256. we might default to having in our head

  257. like Dante's Inferno, right? There's the

  258. first image, right? That's might maybe

  259. what we think of. Or the second image,

  260. which is Gary Larson's Fireside Comics,

  261. right? Oh man, the coffeey's cold. They

  262. thought of everything,

  263. right? Um or The Simpsons or South Park

  264. or whatever. all these different things

  265. that have these depictions of hell and

  266. uh they feed into this imagination that

  267. we have about hell. But and and even in

  268. in the book of Revelation as we read

  269. that lake of fire

  270. um we might think well yes it's

  271. literally a lake of fire but we have to

  272. understand that the book of revelation

  273. is symbolic language fundamentally it's

  274. symbolism and so I don't think we should

  275. necessarily assume it's literally a fire

  276. of lake or my brain I told you I warned

  277. you I'm tired we should necessarily

  278. assume that it's a firefilled lake.

  279. uh what do we actually see when we read

  280. the Bible uh as a whole and try to

  281. understand what the experience of hell

  282. will be like? What the ultimate fate of

  283. the unsaved is. When we do that, what we

  284. see is that the biblical language gives

  285. us this recurring theme of destruction.

  286. over and over and over again. The

  287. languages of destruction, destroyed,

  288. perishing, death, consumed as by fire,

  289. blotted out, cut off, reduced to ashes.

  290. I counted 57 references in the Old

  291. Testament and the New Testament to the

  292. ultimate fate of the unsaved being one

  293. of those sorts of terms or you could

  294. describe ultimately as destruction in uh

  295. let me read a few of those just three

  296. that I've picked out from that whole big

  297. list. 2 Thessalonians chapter 1 for

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  298. example says when the Lord Jesus is

  299. revealed from heaven in blazing fire

  300. with his powerful angels. This is his

  301. second coming and the judgment. He will

  302. punish those who do not know God and do

  303. not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

  304. And what is their punishment? They will

  305. be punished with everlasting

  306. destruction. Destruction that lasts

  307. forever and shut out from the presence

  308. of the Lord and from the glory of his

  309. might. cut off from God and his

  310. life-giving source is destruction

  311. everlasting, permanent. Philippians

    Philippians 3:18–19

  312. 3:18-19,

  313. for as I've often told you before and

  314. now tell you again, even with tears,

  315. there's no joy in any of this. It's hard

  316. to say this, but many live as enemies of

  317. the cross of Christ, and their destiny

  318. is destruction.

  319. Psalm 37:38 also says, "All sinners will

    Psalms 37:38

  320. be destroyed. there will be no future

  321. for the wicked.

  322. 57 at least uh scriptures in the in the

  323. Bible that kind of point to this

  324. language. And there's definitely two or

  325. three passages that lean more towards

  326. what you might think of as the

  327. traditional understanding of hell, which

  328. is the idea of people kind of being

  329. burned alive forever and ever without

  330. fail. So this eternal conscious torment.

  331. Uh but more and more Bible teachers are

  332. questioning that understanding. And I

  333. personally think that the biblical

  334. evidence supports that the fire of hell,

  335. whether that's literal or symbolic,

  336. accomplishes what fire does.

  337. It consumes. It burns up. It destroys.

  338. It eliminates.

  339. Another thing that makes me think this

  340. is where the Bible talks about Sodom and

  341. Gomorrah as the example of what will

  342. happen to the unsaved, right? What

  343. happened to Sodom and Gomorrah? God

  344. rained down fire on the city and it was

  345. reduced to ashes. It was completely

  346. destroyed. And second Peter 2 says, uh,

  347. he condemned the cities of Sodom and

  348. Gomorrah by burning them to ashes and

  349. made them an example of what is going to

  350. happen to the ungodly. Similarly, in

  351. Jude 7, Sodom and Gomorrah and the

  352. surrounding towns gave themselves up to

  353. sexual immorality and perversion. They

  354. serve as an example of those who suffer

  355. the punishment of eternal fire.

  356. And if you were to go to the the area

  357. around the Dead Sea today where Sodom

  358. and Gomorrah once was, you will not find

  359. that city still burning. You will not

  360. find people there still suffering. You

  361. will find nothing because the city was

  362. eliminated.

  363. And so the the concept in this

  364. destruction view is that those who will

  365. be cast into hell, cast into this lake

  366. of fire, will ultimately be annihilated

  367. from existence. That that's the effect

  368. that hell will have. And then you say,

  369. well, hold on a second. Doesn't the

  370. Bible say that everyone lives forever?

  371. Isn't that what the Bible teaches? That,

  372. you know, everyone lives forever. It's

  373. only a question of where you'll spend

  374. eternity. Isn't that what the Bible

  375. teaches? Well, that's what we hear.

  376. That's the saying, right? It's sort of

  377. like, you know, real estate, location,

  378. location, location, location's

  379. everything. It's just everyone lives

  380. forever. It's just a matter of where

  381. you're going to be located. Um, but

  382. actually, I don't think the Bible

  383. teaches that everyone lives forever.

  384. When you actually test that statement

  385. against scripture, I think we have

  386. reason to question that. Does everyone

  387. have everlasting life? Actually,

  388. well, what I read throughout the New

  389. Testament is that eternal life is a

  390. gift.

  391. The wages of sin is death. And the free

  392. gift of God is eternal life in Christ

  393. Jesus our Lord. It's our eternal life is

  394. conditioned upon salvation. God so loved

  395. the world that he gave his only begotten

  396. son that whoever believes in him will

  397. not suffer eternally in hell

  398. consciously. No. Whoever doesn't believe

  399. in him will perish.

  400. Okay? And the opposite of that is having

  401. eternal life. And so it leads me to

  402. believe that the options are not

  403. everlasting life in heaven and

  404. everlasting life in hell. The opposite

  405. of life is death. The opposite of

  406. eternal life is eternal death,

  407. perishing.

  408. And my favorite verse in the Bible that

  409. I have at the bottom of every every

  410. email I send out, 1 John 5:12, whoever

    1 John 5:12

  411. has the Son has life, but in contrast,

  412. whoever does not have the Son of God

  413. does not have life.

  414. Now, for these reasons and others, and I

  415. I I think it's fair to dig a little

  416. deeper on the question of the nature of

  417. hell as we've always understood it or as

  418. many of us have understood it. Is it a

  419. never-ending experience of conscious

  420. suffering and torment where you are kept

  421. alive by God for eternity to be

  422. punished? Or is hell a terrible

  423. experience that results in your ultimate

  424. destruction, where you are blotted out

  425. from existence, or as Revelation 20

  426. calls it, the second death?

  427. So, I've obviously revealed my cards. I

  428. believe the latter. I believe in this

  429. sort of annihilation view of hell. Uh,

  430. but there's a lot of debate about this.

  431. Uh, you can go online and see YouTube

  432. videos. Kirk Cameron's got one where

  433. he's got people debating this that was

  434. just up recently. And, uh, it's a it's a

  435. hot topic in the theological world. Uh

  436. it's something that I studied like 10

  437. years ago and became convinced of this

  438. view as I've studied scriptures. Not

  439. because of any icky feelings or anything

  440. like that. Just go what does the Bible

  441. say? And as I've studied scripture,

  442. that's where scripture has led me. But

  443. you may have a different view and it's

  444. okay to disagree. I said at the start of

  445. this series that some of our views we

  446. hold with a closed fist and some we hold

  447. with an open hand some of our

  448. theological opinions, right? and uh

  449. things like the trinity and salvation is

  450. through Christ and Jesus resurrected

  451. from the dead and those fundamental

  452. things those are closed fist things we

  453. don't compromise on those uh there's no

  454. wiggle room but then other things like

  455. what's your view of the nature of hell

  456. uh that's an open-handed issue we can

  457. disagree on that and still be brothers

  458. and sisters in Christ so you might say

  459. oh I got to leave the church the pastor

  460. doesn't believe in hell I believe in

  461. hell because I have a different view on

  462. it that actually is becoming more more

  463. common as people study scripture. All

  464. that being said,

  465. whatever the nature of this experience,

  466. whether it's eternal conscious torment

  467. or it's a fire that consumes and

  468. annihilates.

  469. It is not the final destination you want

  470. to be headed to. It's not the plane you

  471. want to be on. I can tell you that for

  472. certain.

  473. So then let's get to the good part.

  474. Okay, save the best for last. Let's keep

  475. going in the book of Revelation and talk

  476. about heaven.

  477. The very next chapter in uh chapter

  478. 21:1.

  479. In John's vision, he says, "Then I saw a

  480. new heaven and a new earth, for the old

  481. heaven and the old earth had

  482. disappeared, and the sea was also gone.

  483. And I saw the holy city, the new

  484. Jerusalem, coming down from God out of

  485. heaven like a bride beautifully dressed

  486. for her husband. I heard a loud voice, a

  487. loud shout from the throne, saying,

  488. "Look, it's a loud shout. PREPARE

  489. YOURSELF. LOOK, GOD'S HOME IS NOW AMONG

  490. HIS PEOPLE. HE WILL LIVE WITH THEM AND

  491. THEY WILL BE HIS PEOPLE. GOD HIMSELF

  492. WILL BE WITH THEM. He will wipe every

  493. tear FROM THEIR EYES AND THERE WILL BE

  494. NO MORE DEATH OR SORROW OR CRYING or

  495. pain. All these things are gone

  496. forever."

  497. Yeah, it's a loud shout.

  498. And the one sitting on the throne,

  499. that's Jesus, said, "Look, I am making

  500. everything new."

  501. Man, this is good stuff. Okay, so first

  502. thing we have to notice when we talk

  503. about this is that we don't go up and

  504. away to God.

  505. For some reason, we think that that's

  506. our hope as Christians is that someday

  507. when this life is over, I'll fly away.

  508. Well, we will. we will go and be with

  509. the Lord. But that's not our ultimate

  510. hope. Um that's a that's a temporary

  511. hope. That's our intermediate hope until

  512. the ultimate hope which is some glad

  513. morning when Christ comes, God is coming

  514. down to be with us. All right. Our hope

  515. is not heaven in some alternate

  516. dimension. Not heaven in the clouds. Not

  517. heaven up and away. It's heaven down

  518. here. Eden 2.0.

  519. God with us. That's important. And even

  520. though it says, yes, it says the old

  521. heaven and the old earth had disappeared

  522. or in some translations passed away.

  523. And Jesus says, I'm making everything

  524. new. We should be thinking about that

  525. word new in the sense of renewed or

  526. resurrected. This new heaven and new

  527. earth is a resurrected earth. It's it's

  528. uh it's not God is not going to abandon

  529. his good creation. He's going to judge,

  530. cleanse, renew, and restore it. And what

  531. will remain after that process will

  532. literally be heaven on earth.

  533. So what will this renewed and restored

  534. earth be like? And three points. The new

  535. heaven, the new earth will be a place of

  536. perfect peace, total holiness, and

  537. absolute beauty.

  538. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're going to

  539. be there, Nova.

  540. >> Yeah. All right. In verse one, notice

  541. where it says, and this is speaking

  542. about this idea of perfect peace. It

  543. says, "The sea was also gone." In the

  544. vision, right? He says, "I saw a new

  545. heaven, new earth, the old. The sea was

  546. also gone." Think the sea is I like the

  547. sea. I want the ocean in heaven, right?

  548. We're maritimers. We want the ocean in

  549. heaven. Uh yeah. So, don't worry. It's

  550. not It's not And again, this is all

  551. symbolic language, okay? So, be very

  552. careful how literally you take this

  553. stuff. Um it's meant to be symbolic

  554. pointing to a greater reality than we

  555. can even fully understand. So what does

  556. he mean when he says the sea is also

  557. gone? The Jewish people were not

  558. seafaring people. The Jewish people were

  559. afraid of the ocean. They they would go

  560. out on a lake, a small lake. The lake,

  561. the lake of the Sea of Galilee was a

  562. lake and storms would come up and they

  563. get terrified. Okay. So like they never

  564. went out on the Mediterranean or very

  565. rarely. Like they didn't go out on the

  566. Mediterranean. The thought of the

  567. Atlantic Ocean probably would just blow

  568. their mind. Um and so they were not

  569. seafaring people. the sea for the Jewish

  570. people symbolize chaos and disorder and

  571. things that are terrifying and unknown.

  572. And so when when he says, "Hey, John,"

  573. and gives John this vision and there's

  574. no sea, the idea is don't worry that

  575. heaven is going to be a place of no

  576. chaos, no terror. Um that heaven will be

  577. free from anything perilous or

  578. tumultuous. There's nothing to fear. The

  579. new heaven will be characterized by

  580. shalom, peace.

  581. Okay? And in verse four specifically,

  582. he will wipe every tear from their eyes.

  583. There will be no more death or sorrow or

  584. crying or pain. All these things are

  585. gone forever. All the bad stuff we

  586. experience in this life, death, loss,

  587. pain, it's all going to be gone forever.

  588. Heaven will be a place of perfect peace.

  589. We ain't going to study war no more.

  590. Okay. There's also going to be a place

  591. of total holiness

  592. on the earth. There's going to be this

  593. city which John calls the new Jerusalem.

  594. Verses 2 to3. And I saw the holy city,

  595. the new Jerusalem coming down from God

  596. out of heaven like a bride beautifully

  597. dressed for her husband. And I heard a

  598. loud shout saying, "Look, God's home is

  599. now among his people. He will live with

  600. them. They will be his people. God

  601. himself will be with them.

  602. As we read in verse three, it will be

  603. holy because God will be there in all

  604. his fullness. And I think that's

  605. actually going to be the best part of

  606. heaven. The unfiltered reality of the

  607. presence of God.

  608. Later in this chapter, John gives the

  609. dimensions of this new Jerusalem city as

  610. he sees it in his vision.

  611. And the shape of this city is very

  612. important. What is the shape of this

  613. city symbolizing? Well, first of all,

  614. what is the shape of this new Jerusalem?

  615. Do you know?

  616. >> It's a cube. It's not just a It's a

  617. cube. Yeah. The same dimensions this

  618. way, that way, and up. Okay. And so,

  619. it's literally this big cube that falls

  620. down. Um, there was another famous

  621. building in Jerusalem that contained a

  622. cube. Do you know what that was?

  623. >> Temple.

  624. >> The temple. Right. the innermost part of

  625. the temple known as the holy of holies.

  626. You can read about that in the Old

  627. Testament and that God gave them the

  628. instructions as to how to design that

  629. and the dimensions of that most holy

  630. place, the innermost part of the temple

  631. is also a perfect cube. And so the

  632. symbolism here is so uh meaningful,

  633. right? Um when when John sees the new

  634. Jerusalem in his vision and it's a cube,

  635. that's a symbol that's pointing to the

  636. hol to the holy of holies, the most holy

  637. place and telling us this entire city is

  638. going to be the most holy place.

  639. In verse 22 of that chapter, if we were

  640. to go down to there, it says, "I saw no

  641. temple in the city, for the Lord God

  642. Almighty and the Lamb are its temple."

  643. The whole thing, the whole New Jerusalem

  644. city is a place of total holiness with

  645. unfiltered access to the shikina glory

  646. of God in his full presence. Amazing.

  647. Verse 27, nothing evil will be allowed

  648. to enter, nor anyone who practices

  649. shameful idolatry and dishonesty, but

  650. only those whose names are written in

  651. the Lamb's book of life. There will be

  652. nothing impure, nothing unholy in that

  653. city. And that's of course because in

  654. verse 8, cowards, unbelievers, the

  655. corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those

  656. who practice witchcraft, idol

  657. worshippers, and all liars, all of them,

  658. their fate is in the fiery lake of

  659. burning sulfur. This is the second

  660. death. They've been wiped out,

  661. eliminated,

  662. and therefore all that remains is what

  663. is totally holy and perfect. So the

  664. curse of sin having finally been lifted,

  665. the presence of sin completely removed,

  666. this incredible city and all the earth

  667. is filled with the glory of God and is

  668. utterly and perfectly holy.

  669. So heaven will be characterized by by

  670. perfect peace, total holiness and

  671. absolute beauty. It says that the

  672. heaven, the the city, the whole the new

  673. Jerusalem came down like a bride adorned

  674. for her husband.

  675. Beautiful. A bride adorned. You can

  676. remember maybe the moment you saw your

  677. wife, if you're h if you're married, uh

  678. adorned for you for the first time in

  679. her wedding gown. Think, oh, stunning.

  680. All of the language that describes this

  681. holy city depicts it as absolutely

  682. breathtaking in beauty beyond imagin

  683. imagination. So it's a place of perfect

  684. peace, total holiness and absolute

  685. beauty. These are just some of the words

  686. that can be used to describe heaven

  687. based on the teachings of scripture. We

  688. could go on. I could preach for another

  689. hour on this. U truthfully, we can't

  690. begin to describe it with words. Listen

  691. to what First Corinthians says. No eye

  692. has seen, nor ear has heard, nor the

  693. heart of man imagined what God has

  694. prepared for those who love him. You

  695. know the song, I can only imagine what

  696. it will be like. You can't even imagine

  697. the heart of man. No, no heart of man

  698. has ever imagined it completely.

  699. We can't even imagine it.

  700. And for those who love him, for those

  701. who follow Jesus, for those who have

  702. been born again to a living hope through

  703. faith in Christ, heaven is a promise

  704. that you can bank on. It is guaranteed

  705. for you. Listen to a first Peter 1:es

  706. 3-5. Blessed be the God and father of

  707. our Lord Jesus Christ. According to his

  708. great mercy, he has caused us to be born

  709. again to a living hope through the

  710. resurrection of Jesus Christ from the

  711. dead. to an inheritance

  712. that is imperishable,

  713. undefiled, and unfading,

  714. kept in heaven for you who by God's

  715. power are being guarded through faith

  716. for a salvation ready to be revealed in

  717. the last time.

  718. >> Thank you, Lord.

  719. >> Amen.

  720. All right. So,

  721. so what?

  722. Well, if you are already a believer in

  723. Jesus Christ,

  724. take heart. Take heart. Hold on to hope.

  725. This world,

  726. man, when you read the news and you look

  727. at everything going on, you go, "Oh my

  728. goodness, is what are the robots going

  729. to take over in the next 10 years?"

  730. Like, it's everything is nuts, right?

  731. And it can be feel very hopeless at

  732. times.

  733. But as we look about the promise of

  734. heaven and the the future that God has

  735. planned, we can take heart. We don't

  736. need to be in we don't need to live in

  737. fear. Uh we can trust that God has got

  738. it all worked out. He's in control and

  739. whatever happens ultimately it's heading

  740. towards this beautiful reality.

  741. So take heart. If you're also already a

  742. believer, pray hard,

  743. love deeply, and share your faith

  744. courageously

  745. so that you may help others believe the

  746. gospel and come to faith in Christ.

  747. Be courageous.

  748. >> The time is limited

  749. and people are perishing.

  750. >> Yes.

  751. And we can, the Bible says that the the

  752. fields are white unto harvest, but the

  753. laborers are few. We need to go out and

  754. do the work that God has called us to

  755. do, to bring them in. Bring them in from

  756. the fields of sin.

  757. And if you're not a believer yet,

  758. heaven is going to be amazing.

  759. Don't miss it.

  760. >> Don't go to Sydney Cape Breton when you

  761. mean to go to Sydney, Australia.

  762. In this analogy, Sydney is hell. Cape

  763. Breton is hell. Australia is heaven.

  764. Yeah, just to be clear, which is not

  765. true because gosh, Cape Cape Breton is

  766. beautiful. I love Cape Breton.

  767. >> But

  768. I love Cape Breton. Never been to

  769. Australia. Too hot. Maybe we should get

  770. reverse it, right?

  771. >> Yeah. Okay. Anyway,

  772. don't miss heaven. Come to Jesus today.

  773. Don't delay. Confess your sin. be saved,

  774. be forgiven, and receive the gift of

  775. eternal life. It's a free gift that can

  776. be yours if you will trust in Christ as

  777. your savior and follow him.

  778. >> God will do everything else.

  779. >> He will do it all right. We catch him

  780. and he'll clean them.

  781. >> Yeah. We never know when Christ will

  782. return. It could be any day now. It

  783. could be any moment. Could be a thousand

  784. more years. We don't know. But it could

  785. be tomorrow.

  786. For heaven's sake, make sure you're on

  787. the right flight before you depart.
