  10. Morning. How are you guys?

  11. Yeah, good.

  12. Hey, um, want to know how many you guys have

  13. and you don't have to raise your hands. I just want you to think about it.

  14. But how many of you guys have just come through just a great week?

  15. Great week with God where you're kind of, you're walking through it.

  16. You knew he was there. You heard him speaking to you.

  17. You saw him working through your life. Anybody have a week like that?

  18. Okay, how many, because sometimes we do, we have those kind of weeks, right?

  19. We come in and we're just filled up. We're ready to tell everybody.

  20. How many of you guys had a week this last week where you feel like you got hit by a truck?

  21. Anybody, right? Because we have those weeks too, right?

  22. And there are some times that we come in and we're on a high.

  23. There are some times that we're coming in and we're just kind of on a low.

  24. And the question is, why does God continue to call us back to this place?

  25. We're going to look at a story this morning from the life of Jesus.

  26. It's about a guy that, um, he wasn't just having a bad week.

  27. He seemed to be having a bad long time.

  28. I mean, it seemed like there was a truck that had gone through his life and taken him out long time ago,

  29. and it had really laid him out.

  30. It's in Mark chapter two.

  31. And so stand with me.

  32. We're going to look at Mark chapter two, verses one through 12.

  33. This is from the life of Jesus.

  34. So when Jesus had returned to Capernaum several days later,

  35. people heard that he was there and gathered to the house where he was staying.

  36. And there was no more room for them anywhere, not even near the door.

  37. And he was teaching them the word.

  38. Just then four men came carrying a paralyzed man.

  39. However, they were unable to get to Jesus because of the crowd.

  40. So they dug a hole in the roof above him and lowered the pallet down on which the man was lying.

  41. Jesus seeing the faith of these men said to the paralyzed man,

  42. son, your sins are forgiven.

  43. Now some of the scribes are sitting there and they began to grumble.

  44. Why does this man speak this way?

  45. That's blasphemy.

  46. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  47. And immediately Jesus became aware in his spirit that they were reasoning in that way.

  48. And he asked them, why are you reasoning about these things in your heart?

  49. Which is easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are forgiven.

  50. Or to say, get up, pick up your pallet and walk.

  51. But so that you will know that the son of man has authority on the earth to forgive sins.

  52. He said to the paralytic, I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.

  53. And immediately he got up, picked up his pallet,

  54. and he walked out in the sight of everyone so that they were all amazed

  55. and glorifying God saying we have never seen anything like this.

  56. Let's pray.

  57. Father, this morning, I don't know what we're coming in from.

  58. We may be coming in from a great week where we've seen you at work

  59. and we had no doubt of who we belong to

  60. and of just kind of what you had called us to

  61. and we saw you working through us and around us.

  62. And it was amazing.

  63. Or we may come into this week and we've just had kind of that average week

  64. where it's just a little of this, a little of that, nothing too spectacular.

  65. Or this may have been a terrible week.

  66. God, it may have been one of those weeks where we've gotten through

  67. and we just feel like we barely crawled into this place this morning

  68. hoping to find something to kind of raise us back up

  69. and bring us back to life.

  70. Father, no matter what we come into this day with,

  71. we know that you're here to meet us.

  72. And Jesus, we thank you for your faithfulness to us

  73. and that your faithfulness includes the way that you take your word

  74. and you speak it to us.

  75. And so we want to give you our attention.

  76. We want to give you our eyes and our ears and our hearts

  77. so that you might speak and that we might not only be encouraged

  78. but your word is life to us, God.

  79. It's what brings us strength.

  80. It's what renews, it gets our eyes back on those things

  81. that give us courage to remind us of who we are.

  82. So Father, we ask that through your word you might speak

  83. to our hearts, raise us up,

  84. help us to live into that life that you have called us to

  85. as your children, as your people.

  86. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  87. Amen.

  88. Amen. Have a seat.

  89. So, let's say you're one of those that's had a great week.

  90. Why did God bring you here this morning?

  91. Let's say that you're one of those that's had a terrible week.

  92. Why did God bring you here?

  93. Why does God seem to constantly call his people

  94. to gather together with one another?

  95. He did in the Old Testament.

  96. He said, I want you to regularly gather together with one another.

  97. He did in the New Testament.

  98. He said, don't forsake gathering together as my people.

  99. And we say, why?

  100. Why did he do that?

  101. It's not for his sake, right?

  102. He doesn't need a crowd to kind of boost his ego

  103. so that he knows that he's kind of doing good at being God.

  104. He doesn't need that.

  105. In fact, if he needed a crowd, he could do a better job

  106. of gathering a crowd than we could, right?

  107. Jesus came down.

  108. He'd get like 5,000, 10,000 people that would show up

  109. just to get like food from him.

  110. He didn't...

  111. He doesn't need us to help him out with that.

  112. So why?

  113. Why does he call us together?

  114. It's because, and I want you to hear this,

  115. because when God wants to move in power,

  116. he often gathers his people around us

  117. so that he can show his power to us through them.

  118. Did you hear that?

  119. When God wants to show his power,

  120. most often, he gathers people around

  121. so that he can show his power through them.

  122. He's not trying to...

  123. It's not about our abilities.

  124. It's not about our inspiring words.

  125. It's about his Holy Spirit speaking his words

  126. and doing his acts through us.

  127. When we join him in what he's doing

  128. so that he can show us to be his hands,

  129. his feet, his voice in this world.

  130. In the case of the paralytic man, right,

  131. those friends of his, they were literally his feet.

  132. He could not get to Jesus.

  133. They literally carried him.

  134. But did you catch that other piece?

  135. They were literally also his faith.

  136. When he didn't have maybe the faith to go,

  137. they brought him because they believed

  138. that Jesus could, was willing to,

  139. and could raise this man up.

  140. And so they brought him.

  141. Have you ever had a day like that?

  142. Have you ever had a day where that truck came through your life

  143. and it seemed to just kind of knock the faith right out of you

  144. and you needed a brother or a sister in Christ

  145. to come alongside so that they could almost like

  146. believe for you the things that God had for you?

  147. Could believe as they came with you to Jesus

  148. and said, Jesus, this one needs to be raised up.

  149. That's why we're here.

  150. That's why God says he wants his people to come together.

  151. Sometimes we're the paralytic and we need to be carried in.

  152. Sometimes we're the friends.

  153. We have that faith that can carry someone else into Jesus.

  154. Now, many of you guys know that football season, right?

  155. It started about a week and a half ago.

  156. Some of you guys care.

  157. Some of you guys, those of you who do care,

  158. I just want to say this may be the season

  159. you pay attention to the Bears.

  160. I'm just saying.

  161. Just a side note there.

  162. Just to let you know.

  163. But those of you who do watch football,

  164. you've seen those plays, right?

  165. We've seen them already this season where somebody gets hit

  166. and they just kind of stay down a little bit longer.

  167. They're okay, they're moving, but they just kind of stay down

  168. and you realize that there's a bell that's been rung

  169. and it seems to still be ringing pretty loud for them.

  170. What happens in that moment?

  171. The whole of the training staff comes running out, right?

  172. The medical staff comes out and they check the guy out

  173. and they help him up and then they help him off the field.

  174. And on the way off the field, a lot of times this guy,

  175. a lot of times he's like, no, no, I got it.

  176. And then you're like, whoo.

  177. And they're like, and then they rush back beside, right?

  178. Because there are times in our lives

  179. and this is not just in football.

  180. There are times in our lives when we need people

  181. to come alongside of us, not because we're incompetent,

  182. not because we're weak,

  183. not because we can't walk on our own,

  184. but because we just got our bell rung.

  185. And that can happen, that can happen spiritually,

  186. it can happen physically, it can happen financially.

  187. There are so many ways that these trucks

  188. seem to come through our lives, right?

  189. Amen? Anyone?

  190. And there are times that we need others to come alongside.

  191. We need them to carry us to Jesus

  192. so that he can raise us up.

  193. We need them to carry us with the faith

  194. that they know that Jesus can and will do something for us

  195. because we're not able to.

  196. That's why we're here, right?

  197. That's why God calls his people together

  198. because most often when he wants to show his power,

  199. he gathers people around us

  200. so that he can show his power through them

  201. because he calls them alongside of what he's doing.

  202. Now sometimes God surrounds us to rescue us, right?

  203. There are not many stories you're going to hear

  204. about how someone came to Jesus that go like this.

  205. Well, one night I was sleeping and Jesus came to me in my bed

  206. and he says, you need to follow me.

  207. So I became a believer in Jesus.

  208. There aren't many of those.

  209. They're around.

  210. Apostle Paul seemed to have one of those.

  211. I met a girl in high school that had a story, kind of like that.

  212. I hear stories about in the Muslim world.

  213. They were irregularly.

  214. Jesus is coming to people in their dreams and visions

  215. and he's saying, you need to follow me

  216. and their life is turned to follow him.

  217. But most often, how does it happen?

  218. Jesus surrounds you with people that make it impossible

  219. for you to deny that he's there, to deny that he loves you,

  220. to deny that he is pursuing you.

  221. So slowly chipped away as the power of God is shown through them

  222. and you come to Jesus.

  223. You know, sometimes God surrounds us with others to restore us.

  224. Most of the inner healing and the outer healing that happens

  225. in our life happens because God draws people around us

  226. and they pray for us to be healed

  227. or else they walk with us consistently in love

  228. and they just walk with us as we're acting out

  229. in all kinds of crazy ways

  230. and they just persist in it with us

  231. or maybe they just sit down and they hear the words

  232. that you need to speak and they help you process through

  233. the things that you see going on in your lives.

  234. But most of the time, God, when he wants to restore us

  235. he uses his people to gather around us.

  236. And he does his work and he shows his life through them.

  237. Sometimes God surrounds us to equip us, right?

  238. You can sit in your room in your prayer closet

  239. and you can study your scriptures on your own

  240. and you can find out a lot about Jesus

  241. and you can find out a lot about who you are

  242. and you can find a lot about what you're called to do

  243. and who you're called to be.

  244. But often God will surround you with a group of people

  245. that will hold you accountable to those things.

  246. That will help you wrestle through the scriptures

  247. as you're going, I don't understand this stuff.

  248. That will help you as you're trying to hear God

  249. and discern what is his voice and what's my voice.

  250. Because we know that you guys,

  251. God, when he wants to show us power

  252. he gathers people around to show that power through.

  253. You guys, I want you to know this too.

  254. Each one of you has been called,

  255. has been gifted to become someone

  256. that God can use to gather around others,

  257. to rescue them, to restore them, to equip them.

  258. He has called you to be that person.

  259. He has wired you to be part of that process

  260. to be used by him as his hands and his feet

  261. because when he wants to do his work

  262. he gathers his people.

  263. You, you are his people.

  264. You're his people.

  265. We can't say, well that must be his people over there.

  266. They get to do that, no.

  267. If you've been called, if you have been called to Jesus

  268. then you know you're one of his people

  269. that have been called to be in this,

  270. in this amazing movement where God shows himself

  271. through his church, through his people.

  272. Now there's one caution I want to give you here.

  273. If you were to be driving home today

  274. and you saw a building on fire

  275. the best thing for you to do is probably not

  276. to go running into that building, right?

  277. To try and rescue everybody.

  278. If you see this horrible accident on the side of the room

  279. the best thing for you to do is probably not

  280. to go in there and try your hand at CPR for the first time, right?

  281. If you have a friend that says, hey, you know what?

  282. I want to be a neurosurgeon.

  283. The best thing for you at that moment

  284. is not to say, hey, you know what?

  285. I would like to be your instructor.

  286. Why?

  287. Because there are times that some of these things

  288. we need to know that both in this world

  289. and in God's program that the training is important.

  290. Being equipped to do something well is important.

  291. And so, you know, it's important for us

  292. not only to discover our calling

  293. and discover our ministry that God has wired us for

  294. but it's also important for us to do the work

  295. to put in the effort to be equipped

  296. to do that ministry well.

  297. It's not just to rush in and say, hey,

  298. God has called me as a, you know, as an EMT

  299. in this moment.

  300. No training whatsoever, but let me know.

  301. It's to do the work, to walk with God,

  302. let Him develop us into the people

  303. that can be used by Him

  304. to rescue, to restore, to equip.

  305. So, sometimes on the football field

  306. we see another player come alongside, right?

  307. One goes down.

  308. We see this other player come up.

  309. And what do they do?

  310. They encourage, right?

  311. They encourage.

  312. They check in, make sure that it's not worse than it looks.

  313. And sometimes they even get to help the guy off the field, right?

  314. They help support because they can do that.

  315. But you know what you don't see them do?

  316. They don't go running and they act like

  317. they're the medical staff because they're not.

  318. If they wanted to do that, they need to get the training

  319. to me and the medical staff to do that.

  320. When we feel that God wants to bring us in on His rescue

  321. and His restoration project and His equipping,

  322. it's important that we are aware

  323. of what we're actually capable of doing

  324. and it's important that we're pressing in

  325. to get better at the things that God has called us to do.

  326. The men in our story,

  327. they didn't just wake up that morning and say,

  328. you know what, today I'm gonna have the faith.

  329. I haven't put anything into this, but today

  330. I'm gonna suddenly have the faith,

  331. not just for me, but the faith

  332. to bring this paralytic friend of mine to Jesus

  333. and to believe that kind of faith, you know,

  334. where that comes from growth, that comes from life.

  335. That comes from having it tested

  336. over and over and over again.

  337. That kind of faith to believe for someone else,

  338. that's not something you just kind of,

  339. it doesn't pop on you.

  340. It's not magic.

  341. God says we intentionally say,

  342. God, that's the faith I want,

  343. grow it in me, and we walk through the process

  344. that God trains us up through

  345. to be His people,

  346. the hands and the feet that He needs

  347. to join Him in His work.

  348. So, I want you to think about this.

  349. In your life, do you have people

  350. in these three areas that you can think about?

  351. Do you have people that God has connected you to

  352. that need to be rescued by Him?

  353. Do you have anybody that's just kind of out there

  354. in their life, they're wandering around without Him?

  355. They seem to be lost.

  356. They seem to be kind of in this darkness

  357. where they're making, they're doing their best.

  358. They need to be rescued.

  359. Well, if you do, if there are people

  360. that need to be rescued, what are you doing

  361. to learn how to pray for them more effectively?

  362. What are you doing to learn how to do that

  363. to go into the spiritual realm

  364. with the authority that you have in Christ

  365. to learn about that authority

  366. so that you can go into the spiritual realm

  367. and that you can do the warfare on their behalf?

  368. What are you doing so that you can learn

  369. your story and how to present it in a clear

  370. and compelling way so that you're ready

  371. when they ask you about the hope that's in you?

  372. What are you doing to prepare for that day

  373. so that you know just the basics of the gospel

  374. so that you can tell them how to enter into

  375. a relationship with Jesus?

  376. What are you doing to prepare to be that person

  377. that can be used in that person

  378. who needs rescue in their life?

  379. What about people that they know Jesus,

  380. but man, they need help.

  381. They need help to be freed from those chains

  382. that bind them, from those old thoughts

  383. and those old habits.

  384. Do you know anybody like that?

  385. Has God connected you with someone like that?

  386. And what are you doing?

  387. What are you doing to prepare to be a shepherd to that person?

  388. Some of you guys are gifted,

  389. a lot of you are gifted in that way

  390. or called to that, all of us are called to that

  391. to come along inside people

  392. and help them get closer to Jesus.

  393. So how are you getting better at that?

  394. You guys, we have C3 groups

  395. and C3 groups are intended to have a group

  396. of people that gathers around

  397. and provides that kind of environment

  398. so that people can have that kind of accountability

  399. and have that shepherding in their life

  400. that regularly can be spoken into their lives,

  401. not just by a leader or something,

  402. but by others as well.

  403. But we constantly need new C3 leaders.

  404. We need those who know how to facilitate

  405. that kind of space

  406. because there are people that need to be restored.

  407. They've been rescued.

  408. They just need to heal up a bit

  409. so they can stand up

  410. and they can do the work that God has called them to do.

  411. So if you have people like that in your life,

  412. you know those people,

  413. could it be that God's calling you,

  414. train up so that you can be my hands and feet?

  415. I can gather you around these

  416. and you can see my power work through you

  417. so that they might be healed.

  418. What about those who need to be equipped?

  419. Do you know anybody?

  420. Do you know anybody that might need help

  421. growing in their gifted, right?

  422. Might need to be growing in their effectiveness

  423. of doing what God's called them to do.

  424. Because some of you guys are called to be those

  425. who are equippers,

  426. but you need to be equipped to do that, don't you?

  427. So what are you doing?

  428. To learn the skills,

  429. to learn how to do these things.

  430. You guys, we have these groups that BJ had just mentioned.

  431. We have alpha groups and rooted groups

  432. that they talk about these things.

  433. They talk about how do you develop your story

  434. so that you can tell your story to someone.

  435. How do you help someone to,

  436. how do you become that group that can be that space

  437. that holds people accountable in these things?

  438. How can you pursue your own gifting

  439. and find out what God has called you to do

  440. and to be that part that has called you to play in this body

  441. so that we can be that body of Christ

  442. that God gathers around

  443. and we can be that place where God heals people

  444. and raises them up through his power

  445. because when God wants to show his power in our lives

  446. he most often gathers people around us

  447. that he can show his power through.

  448. So why do we gather together each week?

  449. Well, one because God's here,

  450. but also because his people are here.

  451. We know that that's how God most often shows his power.

  452. It's through his people.

  453. Sometimes we gather because we need that power.

  454. Sometimes we gather because we want God to use us.

  455. We want him to use us in each other's,

  456. in the lives of others.

  457. And we need to know that he intends to use us

  458. in the lives of others to rescue,

  459. to restore, to equip.

  460. So the only question left is just

  461. so do we want to be a part of that?

  462. Do we want to be a part of that?

  463. What will it take to become,

  464. to prepare, to grow into being that?

  465. That body of Christ.

  466. What do we do?

  467. Well first, I'm gonna say it again.

  468. Start with prayer, right?

  469. If you guys don't have a wristband,

  470. they're right out there on your way out.

  471. It's in a little basket right there,

  472. but we pray.

  473. We pray first, everything.

  474. You start in prayer.

  475. You go to God, you say,

  476. God, what do you want me to be?

  477. You go to God, you say,

  478. God, show me.

  479. Show me the path of what I need to be doing.

  480. What are some opportunities that I can take advantage of

  481. to grow in this?

  482. Pray first.

  483. Start there.

  484. Have the conversation with God.

  485. Second, to rescue,

  486. you're gonna need to be rescued, right?

  487. To heal, you're gonna need to be healed.

  488. Not perfect, but you can't, you know,

  489. not paralytic, right?

  490. In order to equip, you're gonna need to be equipped.

  491. So one of the things is,

  492. ask yourself, where am I right now?

  493. Do you know Jesus as your savior,

  494. as your Lord,

  495. have you been born anew into his family

  496. and into that new life?

  497. That's the starting point.

  498. That's the rescue point.

  499. Drowning people can't help drowning people.

  500. But if you've been rescued, you can be,

  501. you know that God can start growing you

  502. to be someone who can,

  503. have you been in that space

  504. where you've been held accountable,

  505. that you've been able to just shed those chains

  506. and just those habits and those thoughts

  507. and those, have you been made yourself accountable

  508. to growing into that healing

  509. that God intends for you?

  510. Have you allowed yourself to be equipped

  511. in the things that God wants you to be involved in?

  512. Because that's the third one.

  513. The third is, so if the second is,

  514. make sure that, you know, these basic baselines

  515. are set in your life.

  516. And the third step is,

  517. well, get to a place then that you can be growing.

  518. Get to a place that you can be equipped in these things.

  519. You know, join like a rooted group

  520. or an alpha group so that you can learn

  521. you can start saying, okay,

  522. because they talk about these things,

  523. they train you to think about

  524. the beginnings of these things.

  525. Get into a C3 group where you can watch

  526. and you can see what does it mean

  527. to be in a group that is being shepherded

  528. and to grow in that.

  529. Take that five-fold survey

  530. that we've been talking about for several months now.

  531. That's online, it's on our website.

  532. Take the survey.

  533. And then plan on when Cheryl offers,

  534. she has five classes coming up

  535. that kind of do a deep dive into each one of these areas,

  536. the apostle, prophet, evangelist, shepherd, teacher.

  537. Set time aside to do that

  538. so that you can start to learn

  539. what it is that God has called you into.

  540. Plan on doing something.

  541. Plan on doing something every quarter.

  542. Don't take time off from this,

  543. this, you know, we go to work

  544. and we can go through the summer

  545. because we kind of have to take a break from it.

  546. And sometimes we think of God that way,

  547. oh, I just got to take a break from church, right?

  548. That's like saying I'm going to take a break

  549. from eating for a while.

  550. I'm just going to, man, I'm so tired,

  551. I got to do that every day, I get so sick of it.

  552. I'm going to just stop eating.

  553. It's probably going to be nine, 12 months

  554. before I get back to that.

  555. That's just boring, right?

  556. You can't do that.

  557. This is life.

  558. I'm going to stop moving, right?

  559. I'm just going to lay on my bed like a slug.

  560. I'm just going to, I'm tired of moving.

  561. It wipes me out, right?

  562. You know, I've looked over my life

  563. and I've realized that the worst situations

  564. I've ever gotten into were because I was moving.

  565. So I'm going to just quit moving.

  566. No, you can't do that.

  567. Don't do that with God either.

  568. Every quarter think, how can I be growing

  569. into this thing that God's calling me into?

  570. Last thing is this.

  571. Not the least, but the last.

  572. Show up.

  573. Show up.

  574. Now, I'm kind of preaching the choir,

  575. so I've got to look at the camera at this point.

  576. Show up, right?

  577. Just be there with God's people.

  578. Show up when you feel like you're the paralytic

  579. that you just got hit by the truck

  580. and you can't even barely move.

  581. Show up so that God can gather his people around you.

  582. Show up when you're having that great week

  583. where you just feel like, man, I got a faith

  584. that it's not just enough for me,

  585. it's enough for this person too.

  586. Show up.

  587. Show up so that we can see what God will do

  588. when his people gather together

  589. because we are the ones who know

  590. that when God wants to show his power,

  591. in our lives, he is typically

  592. going to gather people around us

  593. so that he can show his power to us through them.

  594. We want to be those people.

  595. We want to be the people that see the power of God

  596. as he raises us up.

  597. We want to be those people who see God's power

  598. as he raises those up who we bring to him

  599. that we carry to him that we appeal to for him.

  600. He does this through his people

  601. and you, not just here, but you at home,

  602. you're his people.

  603. He needs you to show up and be his people.

  604. So can we do that?

  605. Can we do that?

  606. Can we do that today?

  607. You know, instead of going,

  608. oh, maybe next week.

  609. Maybe we'll start doing this next week.

  610. Don't stand back from it.

  611. Lean into it.

  612. Say, God, what can we do today?

  613. Can we pray together today?

  614. Can we encourage each other today?

  615. Can we go out into the lobby

  616. and maybe you're not set up for anything yet this fall?

  617. Maybe you can go online

  618. and you just sign up for something

  619. so that you start this process of growing

  620. and that we become the people of God,

  621. that he can use as his hands and feet in this world.

  622. We can be the church that he intended us to be.
