  1. It's my privilege to welcome my superintendent who's also the superintendent of all the East Coast Conference

  2. Denomination all the churches from Virginia all the way up to Maine

  3. He has a very special place in my heart specifically because I met his mom and dad here at this church

  4. Dean and Joy were going before they went to live with the Lord in glory and

  5. They were so instrumental in impacting and supporting my life

  6. I got to know them and then I got to know Howard. I was like, oh, this is why Howard is the way he was

  7. They were just they prayed for me every single time that I preached

  8. Anytime I was doing something or going through something. They said, oh, yeah, we prayed for you this morning and I knew it

  9. I knew it. I could tell and

  10. Their prayers over you have also impacted your life in so much ways, so I appreciate it

  11. I do want to say that Howard's probably wondering what a kid-friendly axe-throwing contest is and

  12. Wondering what kind of church this is so but welcome

  13. Thank you, Cheryl

  14. I did wonder about kid-friendly axe-throwing and I am grateful to know that it's kid-friendly

  15. But what about adult-friendly axe-throwing I might be interested in that and the scarecrow contest that sounds

  16. fascinating as well, so

  17. Takes me back to thinking about the Wizard of Oz scarecrow, but

  18. Looks like you're gonna have a lot of fun this season

  19. Christ Church, it's great to be with you today. I

  20. Consider Christ Church the apple of my eye as the superintendent in East Coast Conference for many reasons

  21. I'm a native of Rhode Island a born in Providence raised in Cranston

  22. grew up in the Providence and Riverside Covenant churches in the middle 1980s the Holy Spirit

  23. Called my parents to leave that church of many years of membership to come over to be a part of this new thing

  24. God was doing West Bay Covenant Church

  25. Where they labeled they labored with another group a group of people over more than a decade to try to plant a church

  26. In this region and then in the fullness of time

  27. Christchurch and West Bay Covenant Church found each other joined forces and the rest is history and

  28. My parents were a part of this church all of their later years love this congregation

  29. And I'm always glad and grateful to be here to visit and today to preach I

  30. Want to open up God's word with you today from the book of Acts the sequel to

  31. Luke's gospel the story of the

  32. Continuing story of Jesus mission in the life of the early church and the 16th chapter

  33. Beginning in verse one. It's a time of transition

  34. And great opportunity and peril in the life of the church and from my first

  35. Conversation with pastor van in the summer about coming to speak while he would be away

  36. This text came to mind right away and as I've been reading it and studying it and pondering it

  37. I pray that it's a timely word for this congregation in its season of opportunity and peril as they all are

  38. So listen for the word of the Lord as we read from Acts 16 beginning in verse one

  39. And I read in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit

  40. Paul came to Derby and then to Lystra

  41. Where a disciple named Timothy lived whose mother was Jewish and a believer

  42. But his father was a Greek

  43. The believers at Lystra and Iconium they spoke well of him

  44. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey

  45. So he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area for they all knew that his father was a Greek as

  46. They traveled from town to town

  47. They delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey

  48. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers

  49. Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia in Galatia

  50. Having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia

  51. When they came to the border of Missia, they tried to enter Bethany, but the spirit of Jesus would not allow them to

  52. So they passed by Missia and went down to Troas

  53. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him

  54. Come over to Macedonia and help us

  55. After Paul had seen the vision we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia

  56. Concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them

  57. From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samathras and the next day

  58. We went on to Neapolis from there

  59. We traveled to Philippi a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia

  60. And we stayed there several days

  61. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river where we expected to find a place of prayer

  62. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there

  63. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia a dealer in purple cloth

  64. She was a worshiper of God

  65. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message

  66. When she and the members of her household were baptized she invited us to her home

  67. If you consider me a believer in the Lord, she said come and stay at my house and she persuaded us

  68. Thus far, this is the word of the Lord

  69. Thanks be to God

  70. Today I want to

  71. Invite you to ponder this text and its relevance to Christ Church and to the church more broadly in this time and season in our history

  72. And to discern the ways in which the Lord is directing our path in mission

  73. This text emerges more than 2,000 years ago in a very different social and cultural context

  74. Then we are familiar with

  75. But if you read Luke and Acts together you see them as prequel in sequel and use their amazing themes that

  76. Tie them together that cross-reference the movement of the spirit in the life and ministry of Jesus

  77. From his incarnation and his mission to his crucifixion his resurrection his ascension

  78. And now in the book of Acts the outpouring of the spirit at Pentecost

  79. Which takes all of the life in the history of Jesus and makes it applicable and available to the church throughout time

  80. The same Lord that's present in the person of Jesus is directing the mission of the church here in Acts 16

  81. And I want you to believe with me and to reflect with me that the same spirit is doing that today in our time in

  82. 2024 as we prepare for 2025

  83. the mission of Jesus

  84. To his disciples was to go into all the world and to make disciples

  85. Jerusalem Judea

  86. Samaria and

  87. the uttermost parts of the earth in

  88. Their imagination the uttermost parts of the earth were pretty much the Mediterranean Basin down into Africa out and across

  89. Asia Minor Greece Rome all the way to Spain

  90. In fact Paul's aspiration in his own ministry was someday. I want to go all the way to Spain

  91. That's as far as you could kind of imagine in that era to think that that would be the well-traveled life

  92. if you could circumnavigate all around the Mediterranean Basin and

  93. The spirit is at work in the church advancing the mission of Jesus from place to place and now

  94. They are in that broad category of the uttermost parts of the known world

  95. Where new challenges would be present

  96. The inclusion of Gentile people and dealing with their own practices and habits both religious and social and family life

  97. Those would call for new sensitivity and new leaders

  98. And frankly a reimagined discipleship

  99. You know as the mission of Jesus goes throughout the world sometimes it gets more complex

  100. It's more challenging our

  101. Imagination in our mindset has to be broadened again and again as we think how does the life and gospel of Jesus apply

  102. In our context and in our time

  103. What Luke wants us to read and understand is that the spirit is leading us in that question

  104. In x-16 in this travel log we encounter a young man a new disciple

  105. Timothy

  106. Gift of God is what his name means

  107. Timothy will play a significant role from this point forward in the ministry of Paul

  108. Two letters in the New Testament will be written to Timothy by Paul

  109. Timothy will be sent on apostolic mission

  110. To shepherd the church and to help them to mature

  111. Timothy is a leader in the next generation of Christian leaders in the church and

  112. Luke wants us to understand that Timothy also represents the conundrum that the church is in and it's time

  113. Because his mother is Jewish

  114. Thanks be to God

  115. and a believer

  116. His father is a Greek. Oh my

  117. This is the wrestling of the church in this time

  118. How how do we bring Jew and Gentile together into fellowship in the gospel of Jesus Christ?

  119. The church has been wrestling with this breakthrough in advance by the spirit now for some time

  120. Peter had had a vision on a rooftop

  121. Being told to go with men who are at the door of the house of Simon the Tanner and he was taken to a

  122. Roman centurion named Cornelius who was a God

  123. fear and

  124. Peter comes to that literal place the gate to the house of the Gentile and

  125. Stands at a border and a barrier wrestling with all that he has been taught in raised up with that Jews live

  126. distinctly from Gentiles and so literally for him to

  127. Step across the threshold is to break the barrier of his own culture and heritage

  128. He only does so because the spirit has nudged him that that which was a human barrier is to be transcended

  129. by the spirit

  130. so

  131. Paul similarly in this place is at a place a juncture of transitions and

  132. Border crossings and boundary breaking that is difficult to experience and in the light in hindsight

  133. Perhaps we see God is at work here

  134. Timothy in the ancient world

  135. embodies the impossibility of

  136. mixed marriage

  137. His mother is a Jew and the believer his father is a Greek. We have a mixed marriage here

  138. Jews are not supposed to marry outside of their faith, but you know when they do sometimes they have children even can you imagine that?

  139. Timothy is the embodiment of a contradiction

  140. His mother is Jewish and believer and we find elsewhere that his grandmother was also a believer

  141. But his father is a Greek and perhaps his father is still also in his pagan understanding

  142. And so Timothy's very existence is both problematic

  143. But it's also a promise. He is a spiritual mulatto of sorts

  144. Being half Greek half Jew. He's multi ethnic. He's interreligious in his identity

  145. And what's understood and believed in the community is because his father is a Greek Timothy was never circumcised

  146. as a child so he is the living embodiment of this

  147. dangerous difficult place of in-betweens in

  148. Acts 15 it had been clarified by the

  149. leaders of the church in Jerusalem that

  150. Circumcision and devotion to Judaism was no longer necessary

  151. To be attached to Jesus that one did not have to become a Jew first to become a Jesus follower

  152. But by faith in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ one could be redeemed and brought into the people of God

  153. So on principle, Timothy doesn't need to be circumcised. He's free to live

  154. Uncircumcised in his flesh because he is devoted to Jesus Christ as Lord

  155. But Paul understands the practicality of the matter

  156. That while he's settled in that and the church is settled in that

  157. There are still people in the wider church that are caught up in that that are wrestling with that and to bring

  158. Timothy with him into various places. He will go particularly among Jewish populations

  159. will be problematic and

  160. So Timothy is asked to do the difficult thing

  161. to be circumcised and

  162. Therefore to avoid the source of anxiety and uncertainty that's present in the church. So Timothy

  163. Consents to that he's circumcised and he joins

  164. Paul in this ministry

  165. We do not know at the beginning of the text how significant that is that we hear that his father is a Greek

  166. But by the time we get to the end of the story, we'll realize the Greek being Greek and going to Greece is what this text is

  167. all about and

  168. The larger point I want to raise up here for consideration is that God is always in the business of raising up people

  169. new people

  170. young people

  171. different people

  172. People from different cultures and contexts people from different nations and nationalities

  173. God is raising up new and different people

  174. Who he intends to appoint and anoint to be a part of his ministry and service in the world

  175. Because the gospel is for all people

  176. everywhere

  177. We understood that the gospel was to the Jew first and then also to the Gentile

  178. But we understand that Jews are going to have a difficult time the further away they go of

  179. Translating culture and context without prejudice. It's just the reality of human limits

  180. It's easier to go perhaps one degree of separation or two degrees of separation

  181. Away from what's normal and natural for us

  182. But by the time we're asked to go three times away our heads are spinning

  183. So it takes new people to reach new people in new places and new generations

  184. The spirit of God is raising up new people

  185. And I want to encourage you Christ Church to ask the question in these days

  186. Who is God raising up calling to be a part of our fellowship our ministry our witness in the community

  187. Who's new in time? Who's new from a new generation who comes from a new place that while it adds complexity to the congregation

  188. It adds strength and opportunity

  189. To those who have yet to be reached

  190. In the book of Acts we were told that the meaning of Pentecost

  191. Included that the spirit now would be poured out on all people

  192. That would be young people and older people

  193. Men and women rich and free slave and and freed people the spirit would be poured out upon all of them

  194. And they would be given gifts to speak and to bear witness to Jesus

  195. They would have dreams and they would have visions

  196. It would be a prophetic community that would advance the mission of Jesus to the uttermost

  197. parts of the world and this is what's unfolding in the book of Acts and it comes with some difficulty and some

  198. Uncertainty as there's division between Paul and Barnabas between Silas and now Timothy

  199. The mission teams in some ways are breaking up, but now there's more than one team

  200. Barnabas will go with John Mark to Cyprus and Cyrene, which is where he's from and Paul and Silas and now young Timothy

  201. Will continue on this journey heading across what is modern-day Turkey

  202. Seeking to encourage the churches. They have already started but also to proclaim the gospel among new people

  203. And as we see in the story, they are adjusting as best they can

  204. To accommodate these social sensitivities of the community

  205. They want to do it without compromising the integrity of the gospel or their growth in Christ likeness

  206. But yes, a half Jew Greek

  207. Convert is what now in the company of the Apostle Paul

  208. As they go forward to advance the gospel

  209. And I wonder as I visit Christ Church today as I visit churches week to week

  210. I look out for who are the new people

  211. That God has brought into your fellowship

  212. People who come from a different space

  213. From a different culture or class from a different nationality or heritage

  214. That both challenges the church and strengthens the church by that diversity and that inclusion

  215. That's what the church is wrestling to do in the time of the Apostle Paul

  216. And so Luke goes on and says that Paul and his companions

  217. While the church is being strengthened and built up day by day. They they're not traveling again

  218. And they go throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia get your map out and look at this this afternoon

  219. They're traveling across modern-day Turkey from east to west pretty much along the southern half

  220. And they're going from region to region

  221. Having been kept by the Holy Spirit. We're told from preaching the word in the province of asia

  222. And then when they came to the border of missia another district, they tried to enter the city of bithynia

  223. But again in perplexity the spirit of jesus would not allow them to

  224. So they passed by missia

  225. And they went down to troas

  226. Luke is eager for us to understand that the spirit who is with the believers and filling the apostles

  227. For their ministry is giving them guidance day to day

  228. In the covenant church, we've historically talked about the important one of our covenant affirmations is the cultivation

  229. Of a conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit

  230. That in our walk with jesus, there's the marvel and mystery that the spirit of jesus

  231. Comes to fill us and to rest in us to give us wisdom and guidance

  232. And direction both broadly and sometimes very specifically like

  233. Get up across the room and go talk to that person kind of guidance

  234. And some of it's positive and this case some of it's negative like don't do this

  235. I know you want to go here, but the spirit says no, this is not for you and that happens twice in a row

  236. Perhaps frustrating to paul and his companions

  237. Perhaps they've journeyed long and it's about time for cocktail hour

  238. Or maybe whatever they would have done in that time and they were hoping to get off the road and find

  239. A little place, but the spirit says no keep traveling. This is not for you twice in a row

  240. They're wearied and tired and don't understand why this isn't as good a town or that for us to go

  241. But there's no discussion about the debate

  242. Simply luke tells us that the spirit of jesus sovereignly

  243. Says he would not allow them to

  244. And so they finally come down to troas on the coast

  245. And now a divine appointment occurs for the apostle

  246. During the night paul had a vision of a man of macedonia

  247. Standing and begging him and hear these words

  248. Come over to macedonia and help us

  249. Come over to macedonia and help us

  250. Come over to macedonia

  251. and help us

  252. And paul realized the holy spirit was speaking to him

  253. When they had set out they had no plan to go beyond the bounds of what we would call turkey today

  254. They were on a land trip. They only packed for their land trip

  255. You know, they didn't bring their ocean going close or whatever they needed there

  256. This was a five-day trip or whatever. No, there's a pivot by the movement of the spirit come over to macedonia and help us

  257. And after paul had seen the vision he discusses it with luke and with sylas and with timothy

  258. For the first time in the book of acts you see this now in this text

  259. The word we drops in here in verse 10 of chapter 16

  260. We

  261. Includes luke the author so it's very possible that in this moment luke who has

  262. Recorded all things in luke's gospel doing his research

  263. Now actually becomes participant and travel companion

  264. In the second missionary journey with paul and sylas and timothy because only now does he say we

  265. Got ready and that's his continuing frame of reference

  266. We got ready at once to leave for macedonia. We concluded

  267. God has called us to preach the gospel to them

  268. You see christian experience of the holy spirit

  269. Builds on the christian witness. We have a scripture

  270. The bible tells us to go into all the world and preach the gospel

  271. That's pretty broad

  272. We could sit with that text and say okay, we're to go into all the world and preach the gospel

  273. But where should we go first?

  274. Where should we go next? There's no answer to that in the bible

  275. The bible is broad counsel for all god's people throughout time

  276. But the spirit of jesus is able to take

  277. That and apply it to us in time and space contextually

  278. The spirit is able to prompt individuals and communities

  279. About what their next step is

  280. About which door is open and which door is closed

  281. We don't pit the spirit against scripture. We understand the spirit illuminates the word of god

  282. And applies it to our life for the sake of discipleship and mission

  283. So paul wakes comes in the morning and says i've had a vision he processes it when his team

  284. And he realizes the spirit is calling us to go where we have not even imagined or prepared to go

  285. And a marvelous thing

  286. After two nos in a row

  287. The spirit now says go go go

  288. And they do

  289. You see it is the spirit's work

  290. Who serves as our advocate

  291. And our guide

  292. The spirit both restrains us

  293. And constrains us

  294. The spirit prohibits

  295. And the spirit promotes

  296. The guidance of the holy spirit is both negative

  297. And positive

  298. The closing of doors

  299. And the opening of doors

  300. I thank god

  301. For every door

  302. That the holy spirit has closed

  303. In my life

  304. If every door was open my life would be a train wreck

  305. I'd just be a mess

  306. I can't handle every open door

  307. At tv show door number one door number two door number three remember that back in the day

  308. No, we there is an open door for us

  309. in revelation three

  310. In the letters of john to the seven churches in asia the area where paul is now

  311. Jesus introduces himself this way to the church in philadelphia

  312. These are the words of him who is holy and true

  313. Who holds the key of david

  314. What he opens no one can shut

  315. And what he shuts no one can open

  316. I know your deeds

  317. See i have placed before you an open door

  318. That no one can shut

  319. Christ church

  320. God has closed some doors to you in this time

  321. Thank god for closed doors

  322. Closed doors for you probably means an open door for somebody else

  323. It's not all about us

  324. But god opens doors for you

  325. And an open door for you

  326. Is a closed door for somebody else

  327. Your call is to discern lord what doors are open for us

  328. And you are nudging us to go through

  329. And which doors are closed to us?

  330. How do we know the difference between an open door and a closed door?

  331. While you push on all the doors

  332. You're not passive in saying oh lord open the door for me and I shall proceed

  333. You say no we tried to go here and it didn't work

  334. We learned from that lesson and then we tried to go here

  335. And it didn't work and we learned from that lesson and we stepped back and we reflected

  336. It seems that the spirit of the lord both in our hearts and in our experience

  337. Has closed that door to us and we should rest in that

  338. But when the lord speaks in ways that we can hear and discern together

  339. That god has opened the door for us then he's holding it open for us

  340. Then we should proceed together in faith and obedience

  341. Friends what is your open door?

  342. What opportunity it isn't necessarily the opportunity right here or here

  343. It's not always right on the path the smooth path. We'd like it to be on

  344. Sometimes the open door is in a place. We weren't prepared to go

  345. And it requires a trip across the water

  346. to another place

  347. Macedonia

  348. And the man we don't know and a story we haven't yet heard

  349. We get enough insight and enough clarity that we can walk by faith faith is never presumption

  350. Faith is taking god

  351. at his word

  352. God opens the door and he holds it open for our obedience

  353. So paul and his companions

  354. Hearing that and discerning it together

  355. Make plans and they proceed across the water

  356. Stopping in samathrists and then to neapolis and then to filipi it seemed to be always paul's aspiration

  357. Then when he went from province to province he went to the capital city in that region

  358. And began from there to share the gospel and to see

  359. Where he might find an open audience and he does this here

  360. He goes across to macedonia lands at neapolis

  361. Goes to filipi, which is a roman colony and it is the capital of that region

  362. And they spend several days there

  363. And then on the sabbath day we're told

  364. They come down

  365. to the river

  366. Often expecting to find a place of prayer

  367. Now there's synergy in this text. I want to point out to you between

  368. Peter's experience in acts 10 and paul's experience in acts 16

  369. I think luke puts these here to show us parallel experience to these two apostles who sometimes butted heads

  370. And yet ultimately collaborated

  371. Peter gets credit for being the apostle that breaks the barrier and goes to cornelius's house

  372. And before he can even give the invitation the holy spirit falls upon them

  373. Gathered there and it's like pentecost part two

  374. And they go oh evay

  375. The spirit is given to gentiles

  376. They hadn't even been baptized and they certainly hadn't been circumcised

  377. And they realized god is really serious the gospel is going to gentiles

  378. But it was peter who got the privilege of saying yeah, you know

  379. I had a vision and I obeyed the vision and I went and this is what happened

  380. And I get to be the first to preach to the gentiles through a roman centurion now here paul

  381. In act 16 says well peter has his story

  382. I had a vision too in the middle of a night when we were here in troas

  383. And I get to be the one who travels across the water

  384. To be the first to proclaim the gospel among greeks

  385. Greeks what do we have about greeks around here? Oh timothy

  386. Timothy who I thought that was going to be problematic because he's half greek and half jew

  387. Let's put him out in front here

  388. Because timothy embodies in himself in his own life story. I bet he even speaks greek

  389. like a greek

  390. Yes, god is preparing the church to walk through the open door with grace

  391. and understanding

  392. And so they go down to the river

  393. expecting to find a place of prayer

  394. And lo and behold, we don't find a man from mastodonia here, do we?

  395. We sat down and began to speak to the women

  396. Who had gathered here

  397. And one of those listening is a woman

  398. From the city of thigh attire a thigh attire is back over in turkey

  399. But her name is lydia

  400. We're giving her name

  401. Lydia lydia is a businesswoman

  402. A dealer in purple cloth

  403. That's luxury goods in the ancient world

  404. Purple cloth was tray expensive

  405. Oh only the wealthy may enter if you had purple cloth and you you were adorned in purple cloth

  406. You were in the one percent

  407. She's a wealthy businesswoman under an international business trip

  408. And she is a worshipper of god

  409. A vision of a man from mastodonia come and help us

  410. Find its initial answer in a woman who's not even from those parts

  411. But on a business trip in filipi at the river

  412. Who is in her own way the best she understands

  413. A worshipper of god

  414. As cornelius was a godfearer and a roman centurion

  415. Who came to trust in christ through the ministry of peter

  416. Lydia is a worshipper of god

  417. Who first hears the message of jesus through the lips of the apostle paul

  418. And a young protégé timothy

  419. We should never ignore the reality that god

  420. Maintains a wider witness and presence in the world

  421. Than we are often aware of

  422. It doesn't mean we give into universalism

  423. And lose the distinctive of the gospel

  424. It means that we always believe that god is at work ahead of us

  425. That whatever light people have some people are responding to that light

  426. Some are groping some are uncertain

  427. But there are people who don't yet know the gospel of jesus

  428. Who cultivate a heart of prayer

  429. Who worship god as best they know

  430. And perhaps in their prayers there's oh god i wish i could know you better

  431. But how could that be?

  432. And one comes in the fullness of time

  433. To tell the story of how god has come into the world

  434. Himself in the person of jesus so that we might know god face to face

  435. And know the story of the forgiveness of our sins

  436. And the gift of eternal life

  437. And luke says in this marvelous moment of trembling uncertainty

  438. At this beachhead in massadonia

  439. In a journey that's gone farther than they ever imagined or certainly asked

  440. The lord opened lilias heart

  441. To respond to paul's message

  442. It's not that paul was so erudite and convincing

  443. Paul confessed about himself. He says i'm not an impressive preacher

  444. I write pretty heavy letters. He says i'm just not that great a preacher

  445. It's not about the preacher and their persuasion. He's not a greek

  446. Retirition with flourish and fanfare

  447. It is not paul who opened her heart

  448. Notice what the text says

  449. The lord

  450. opened

  451. her heart

  452. Friends there's no greater gift

  453. No greater witness of our own life

  454. And to come to that moment in our own time and story

  455. Where the lord

  456. Opens our heart to the gospel

  457. Whether it's in a church service under the ministry of a preacher

  458. Whether it's watching someone on television

  459. Whether it's reading a scripture

  460. Whether it's through the witness of a friend in a coffee shop

  461. Whatever the story is the most marvelous day in our life

  462. Is when the lord opens our heart

  463. To respond to the message and we realize for ourselves

  464. God is

  465. speaking to me

  466. God is calling me to believe that christ

  467. Lived and died and rose for me and is calling me to trust and to follow him

  468. And that happens

  469. For lydia the first disciple on what we will call the european

  470. continent

  471. Now paul and his group they're just moving within the roman empire from province to province in place to place

  472. The fact that it goes across the aegean to what is macedonia is fairly incidental to paul

  473. But in the perspective of history

  474. When we think about all that has happened in what we would call western christianity

  475. And all that has gone from europe and broadly understood to the uttermost parts of the world the great

  476. missionary movements that have gone out from to europe

  477. Excuse me and from europe

  478. This is the beginning of it right here

  479. The first convert in what we will call europe

  480. Is a business woman

  481. Her name is lydia

  482. She's a dealer in luxury goods

  483. And she's well established and has a large household

  484. And luke tells us that having believed and being baptized

  485. She then invites

  486. All of them into her home for the spread shall we say

  487. If you consider me a believer in the lord

  488. Come and stay at my house

  489. Hospitality is always an essential part of discipleship

  490. particularly in the book of acts

  491. And

  492. Lydia is not just here to be converted and then to depart

  493. lydia brings the gospel

  494. To her whole household. She's head of household here

  495. For she and the members of her household are baptized

  496. In the ancient world the smallest social unit was not the individual

  497. It was the household

  498. As goes the householder so goes the household

  499. The philippian jailer will be the same way he will be converted and then his whole household

  500. Everyone there his family servants all of them

  501. Would be baptized and brought into the christian faith the same thing here lydia makes a decision

  502. It's compelling upon her entire household to be baptized

  503. Men women servants children

  504. Whoever's there are invited into their home now

  505. And her home becomes the launch pad for the gospel's expansion throughout greece and macedonia

  506. You're bringing me a cup bless your brother

  507. Oh, that's great wine, thank you

  508. All right

  509. And so what I want to share with us this morning to think about

  510. The lord is directing both the preacher and the hearer

  511. He's been preparing lydia to hear this message for some time

  512. Think of all the things that the holy spirit is doing

  513. In and through this movement to bring the right people to the right person at the right place at the right time

  514. Pivot the story and think of it through lydia's perspective

  515. Lydia is a worshipper of god best she understands she's carrying out her business

  516. She's made a business trip across to macedonia to sell her purple goods on a Sabbath day

  517. She's gathered at the river as a place of prayer and to kibitz with other women

  518. And these men come and sit here at the river

  519. And begin to tell a story and in that telling of the story

  520. A heart is strangely warned

  521. And faith in jesus christ begins to emerge and she confesses i believe you paul

  522. And paul observing the sincerity of her heart

  523. And then says well baptism is next and she and her old

  524. Householder baptized and now the church will begin in the house of lydia in macedonia and beyond

  525. paul's responsibility

  526. Was simply after the vision to discern it in the community and then to say

  527. We should go we should proceed

  528. Through the open door

  529. Friends when we walk through the open door

  530. God is the one who's prepared for what's on the other side

  531. We're not responsible for everything that's consequence

  532. God is responsible in the consequence

  533. Our responsibility is in the obedience

  534. To come to that unanticipated place

  535. Where a new base of witness will be established

  536. And from there the gospel will spread to Athens and to Corinth and to baria

  537. And then to the uttermost parts of the world

  538. Christ church, let's walk for a minute ten years from now in our imagination

  539. Let's let's say together that somewhere in the next season the holy spirit speaks to you

  540. And says no

  541. No

  542. Yes

  543. And in that no no yes you discern together in real time

  544. The lord is calling us to venture forth together

  545. To advance the mission of jesus among people who need help

  546. And we go

  547. And we never imagine what may happen

  548. What begins with one person

  549. With one name and one story in one place

  550. Establishes a beachhead that leads to something else

  551. And then ten years from now

  552. All the fruit that emerges from that

  553. We look back on and say we never could have asked or imagined

  554. For that it was not anything we did it was the lord preparing people in advance

  555. All we did was take one step at one time

  556. Of faithful obedience to push on a door and behold it swings open

  557. And we proceed

  558. Churches that are healthy and discipleship

  559. And missional and adventure

  560. Are simply churches willing to listen

  561. For the voice of the spirit

  562. And lean into opportunities

  563. And to see what the lord may do

  564. The rest is history and fruitfulness and adventure

  565. Our task is to discern the difference between no no no no no

  566. And yes yes yes yes yes

  567. And in that space to be faithful to the risen lord

  568. Who is with us

  569. My prayer as your brother in christ and superintendent

  570. Is that i will share with you in the joy and the journey

  571. Of that discernment

  572. In this next season of your life. What is jesus calling you to do together?

  573. May that adventure of faith and faithfulness fill your hearts with joy

  574. And anticipation

  575. And might you in your own life of prayer

  576. Listen for what the lord by the spirit is saying to the church

  577. Amen
