Submit One to Another

Allen Morehouse: Anyway, I get the privilege of introducing someone special to me.

Allen Morehouse: I mean not only is this a high Sabbath because of communion, but it's a high Sabbath because my grandson is with Renee and I.

Allen Morehouse: I've had the privilege to introduce his sister, Abby, Abigail, um, when she sang up here and she's also done the scripture.

Allen Morehouse: And of course my son, who's Pastor Myckal Morehouse, I've introduced him many times.

Allen Morehouse: And um I just, you know, I told Joshua I wouldn't try to embarrass him.

Allen Morehouse: So I've got to be careful.

Allen Morehouse: But he took a stand for the Lord a few years ago and got baptized.

Allen Morehouse: And it was an amazing experience because my son who baptized him, it was his first waterfall baptism.

Allen Morehouse: And of course I said I would get in the water, but I stuck my toes and and it was ice cold.

Allen Morehouse: But anyway, I am so happy that Joshua's agreed to share the scripture.

Allen Morehouse: And so thank you, Joshua.

Grandson: Good morning.

Grandson: Our scripture reading is found in Ephesians 5, verse 21.

Ephesians 5:21

Grandson: And it says, Submit yourselves to one another in the fear of God.

Grandson: It's a short one.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Yes, it is a short one.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But powerful.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We have been going through these one anothering texts and uh last week I got to listen I I did listen to uh

Pastor Dale Tunnell: the last two sermons because I was not here, I was a camp meeting, so I listened to Brother Willie and and Randy as they what they shared and I was moved by their thoughts that they had.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It is a a a a real challenge for us to to bear with one another

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Do you ever find that challenging to bear with one another?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Oh man, sometimes, sometimes, sometimes.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then the next one was be of the same mind with one another.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, we we think about that as a church and we think, How in the world can I mean, I'm not even of the same mind with myself sometimes

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean sometimes part of me wants to do this and part of me wants to do that.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, i i in with Cheryl and I, I mean, for us to be one, you know, of the same mind, sometimes that's how can we

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We don't even think alike.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: How's that supposed to work for us to to be of the same mind?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then today's sermon, man, I I

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Who Who put these things together anyway?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, you heard the scripture reading, right?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What's the big word there?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Submit.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean when it comes to when when you say that word, I mean

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It just bristles go up and down your spine, don't they?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, we don't like that word.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: In fact, that word has kind of gone out of use.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Submit.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean the definition when I when I looked it up, give way, yield, give in

Pastor Dale Tunnell: to the will or authority of another.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Notice with that that word submit, that means you are making a decision

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You are making a choice to surrender your desires to the desires of another.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Is that easy?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, wouldn't it have been so easy for me just to surrender my desire to have a pumped-up tire to the will of my father?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Who said, make sure you have the attendant to pump it up?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean it kind of reminds me of the little boy.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He was he was riding in the backseat of the car and they had been riding for a long time.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he was tired of sitting with the seat belt on.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And so he took it off.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he stood up in the back seat.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And what did his mother say?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Sit down and put your seatbelt on.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he just stood there.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What did his mother say the second time?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Sit down and put your seatbelt on.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he just stood there

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And his father said, Sit down now.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he just stood there

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And so his father began to pull the car over to the side of the road.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he sat down.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he buckled his seatbelt.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And the car started moving again.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he says, I just want you to know I'm standing on the inside.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's what we do sometimes, isn't it?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We think that there's an authority outside of ourselves and that something negative might happen to us, so we make the decision to sit

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But we do it in defiance.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We're standing on the inside

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What does it mean for us to to submit to one in this context here of Ephesians 5?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It's interesting because there in Ephesians 5

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You have the you know, it starts off with how to walk in love, it talks about walking in the light, and then it talks about how to walk in wisdom, and many versions of the Bible in that paragraph where it talks in Ephesians 5 there

Pastor Dale Tunnell: about how to walk in wisdom.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That statement, verse twenty one, is part of that paragraph where it talks about walk in wisdom, and it says verse twenty one, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And some versions of the Bible put it there.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Other versions of the Bible.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: separate it and they put it with the next section talking about how to have a Christian household

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And they start off the section with a Christian household, and it starts off with verse 21: Submit to one another in the fear of God.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Under the household portion.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I wonder where it belongs.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The problem is it fits both places.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: This this submission thing is is big.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It's huge.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The New Testament here is full of this concept.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Now because of time I'm not gonna take you through all the verses, but I want y take out a pen or pencil or something, write some things down, 'cause I'm not gonna read 'em all to you, but I'm gonna state the verse.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: So if you wanna do some homework this afternoon or tomorrow

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Uh, I'm gonna tell you, God talks to the elders.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he tells the elders they need to be submissive to the other members in the church.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Now when you think about elders in church, you

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Tend to think uh who's in charge, right?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If I ask you who's in charge in the church, you say talk to the pastor, talk to the head elder

Pastor Dale Tunnell: One of my uh senior pastors when we were when I was an intern, he he told me, You know what the head elder's main responsibility is, don't you?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And I said, Yeah, he takes care of all the problems the pastor doesn't want to take care of.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He kind of smiles and he says, That's a good answer.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I maybe remember that one.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: No, that's the the person who is head of submitting to the church.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: To demonstrate what submission is all about.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That is the responsibility.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: First Peter chapter 5, 2 and 3, if you want to go and read about the the the elders submitting

Pastor Dale Tunnell: In general, it says Christians, the body of Christ, are supposed to submit to elders.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Hebrews chapter 13, verse 17 talks about Christians in general submitting to the elders.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: First Peter chapter 5, verses 5 and 6.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It talks about the young men submitting to the older men.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Oh, come on.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We could have had that any other place as well.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But anyway, it says the young men submitting to the older men there.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: 1 Peter 5, verse 5 and 6.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians 5, 25 and 28.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Colossians 3, verse 19, it talks about husbands submitting to their wives.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ah, I forgot one.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: First Peter 3 7 also and 1 Corinthians 7 3 and 4.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Husbands submitting to their wives.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: being considerate to the wives, loving their wives as Christ loves the church.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then Ephesians five, just after our scripture reading, it puts it the other way.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It says wives are to submit to their husbands.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Then the same way that the church submits to Christ.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Also in Colossians 3 18, wives, submit to your husband.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Titus 2.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Verses 3 through 5 talks about the same thing.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: 1 Peter chapter 3, verses 1 through 4 talk about the same thing.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Then it changes.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Scripture also talks about submission in the context of parents submitting to their children

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians six, verse four.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Maybe I should read that one.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Fathers do not exasperate your children.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Instead, bring them up in the training and an admonition of the Lord.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians six four.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Since it's Father's Day, I'll read those there.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Parents to the children Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Colossians 3 21 talks about parents to their children to encourage them.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then we know the other ones, children to the parents, children obey your parents in the Lord.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: For this is right.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Honor your father and mother.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians 6, 1 through 3.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Colossians 3, verse 20.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Children, obey your parents.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Then it goes further there in Ephesians chapter 6, verse 9.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It talks about masters and slaves, or if we want to change that a little bit, employers to employees.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It says employers are to submit to the employees.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians 6, verse 9.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And Colossians chapter 4, verse 1.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If you're writing those things.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then the other side of things, servants to masters or employees to employers

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ephesians chapter six, verses five through eight, and also Colossians three, twenty-two to twenty-five

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then we get to Christians are to submit to government officials.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Romans chapter thirteen, verses one, five, and seven.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Verses one, five, and seven.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: In first Peter chapter two, thirteen through seventeen, talk about Christians submitting to the government

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's a whole lot of submission.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: How does it work?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Husband submitting to wife, wife submitting to husbands.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Who submits to whom?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Why doesn't it happen like it's supposed to happen?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'll tell you the reasons why.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'm going to give you three.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The the three reasons are selfishness.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Did you know we live in a selfish world?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If somebody says that you were the boss, what do you want to make sure people understand?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You're the boss.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If you're the boss, that means you get to

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Tell people what to do.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You get to decide, right?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Well yeah, well maybe

Pastor Dale Tunnell: So our selfishness gets us to the predicament that we are not willing to submit

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Even though we may not have worked at this place as long as some of the other people that are there, even though other people may know how things run and operate better than we do.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We don't submit because of our own insecurity.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean, if somebody says, look, you're the boss

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What are people expecting out of you?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Because of our insecurity, we want to make sure people know that

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We're the boss.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then sometimes we get we don't do this right because of our confusion.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We don't understand what the Bible actually teaches.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'm gonna give you an illustration of this.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When Cheryl and I first got married,

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We went on our honeymoon.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We came back from our honeymoon.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We were in the trailer that we were going to live in.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And within the first few days there, I asked Cheryl to come and sit on my lap.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And I looked into her eyes.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And I don't remember everything I said, but I remember how it concluded.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If we are struggling to make a decision, I have the last word.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Why are you laughing?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It's okay if my yet last word is yes ma'am.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Right?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I I'm gonna tell you, I made this statement because I was selfish.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I wanted Cheryl to know I was boss.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I made this statement because I was insecure.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I wanted Cheryl to know I was in charge.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I made this statement because I had confusion about what the Bible actually taught about submission.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And I had been growing up in a pastor's house, and I still had that confusion.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And so I shared those Bible texts with you because they were shared with me

Pastor Dale Tunnell: so that we could look at them and understand what is submission.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What is the purpose of submission

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I mean I ha I had a uh a gentleman and he he came to me and he says, My wife has left me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And I said, Why did your wife leave me?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Make sure I get the words here right.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: My wife thinks I try to control her.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I said, Well do you

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he said, well, the Bible tells me I'm supposed to rule over her.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Genesis 3:16

Genesis 3:16

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Is that really what it means when it says that, or is that something that happens as a result of sin?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And in the gospel, when Galatians says there's neither male nor female, we're all one in Jesus Christ, what's supposed to happen

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When Ephesians tells us we're supposed to submit one to another, when we're in Christ, we're supposed to do it as unto the Lord.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What is that supposed to look like?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: This concept of submission is difficult.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It is truly difficult.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'm going to have you turn in your Bibles here to Matthew chapter twenty-six.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Matthew chapter twenty six

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We come down to verse 36.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It says, Jesus went into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: asked his disciples to sit here while I go a little bit further.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He took Peter, James, and John with him and began to be sorrowful and and prayed, and he said to them,

Pastor Dale Tunnell: My soul is exceedingly sorrowful.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Stay here and watch and pray with me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He went a little further, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup do what?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Pass from me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What was the will of Jesus?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What was the will of Jesus?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He did not want to die.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Now, I thought Jesus was God.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I thought the the Father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I thought they were all co-equal, co-eternal.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What's Jesus doing here?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He's expressing his will.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: In this instance, his his humanness.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: His desire, let this pass from me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Nevertheless, what

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Not as I will, but as you will.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What is that called?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Submission

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Now he does it in this verse, and then he goes back uh a second time in verse forty-two, and he prays, Oh my father, if this cup cannot pass away from me unless I drink it

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Your will be done.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We kind of get a picture here.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: This is not what Jesus wanted to do.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He was going through something that was extremely difficult for him at this time.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The weight of the world, the sins of Dale, were upon him.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Your sins were pressing down upon him.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He was feeling the separation between his father and himself

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He did not like the feeling that was going on here.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And he says, Father, please, if it is possible, let this cup fr pass from me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But then he goes on, he says, But not my will, but

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Thine be done

Pastor Dale Tunnell: 43 says, and he came and found them asleep again, and their eyes were heavy, so he left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What were the words the third time?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Let this cup pass from me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Do you know what Jesus' will was?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'm just saying, do you know what the father that what Jesus' will was?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: His will?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He was asking.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Three times he asked, Let this cup pass from me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We know what his will was.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But then he said, Thy will be done.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That means he was placing himself under

Pastor Dale Tunnell: His father's will.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: It was a choice that he was making.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Now I'm going to ask you: do you think he was standing up on the inside?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I don't think so.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He had stated his will, but he was in humble submission to the will of the Father

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Turn your Bible again.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: John chapter thirteen

Pastor Dale Tunnell: John chapter thirteen Same evening as Jesus praying in the garden, just a few hours earlier, John thirteen.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Begins there with Jesus washing the disciples' feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus starts to wash the disciples' feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We get to verse six, and it says, Then he came to Peter.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And Peter said to him,

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Lord, are you washing my feet?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What was Peter saying here

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus said to him, I'm doing you what I'm doing, you do not understand now, but you will know after this.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter said to him

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You shall never wash my feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: You shall not wash my feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Do we understand what's happening here?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus desired to wash

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter's feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter desired not to have them washed by Jesus because Jesus was not going to be his servant.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus was not going to act like he was his servant.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Ding ding ding ding ding new information.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Do you like it when you're having a conversation and you get new information?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Does new information sometimes change your thought processes?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The bells go off in Peter's head.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter says, Well, then, wash all of me

Pastor Dale Tunnell: What was going on here?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Something had changed in Peter's mind.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He got new information, new understanding, and he

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Submitted.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter says, Not just my feet only, but my hands and my head also.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus said to him, He who bathes needs only to have his feet washed, completely clean, and you are clean, but not all of you.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And then verse 12 it says, so when he had washed their feet, we understand that Jesus did what to Peter?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter came to the conclusion that it was okay for Jesus to wash his feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Peter submitted

Pastor Dale Tunnell: To Jesus when he had the proper understanding.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: In this context here.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Jesus tells us then, Verse 14: If I then your Lord and teacher have washed your feet

Pastor Dale Tunnell: you also ought to wash one another's feet, for I have left you an example that you should do as I have done to you.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Why do we celebrate communion?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Why do we celebrate this foot washing service?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Because we we are let's make sure we get it right, okay?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Is it fun to wash one another's feet?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I think fun is the wrong word

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Let's take that word fun out of it.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We are doing this because we are submitting to the will of Jesus.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When I wash someone's feet, I am submitting to the will of Jesus, and I am doing it because I love Jesus.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's why the scripture tells us we're supposed to submit to government officials.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's why the scripture tells us we're supposed to submit to our employers.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's why Scripture tells us we're supposed to submit to our spouse.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That's why Scripture tells us we're supposed to submit to our parents because we are doing it as unto the Lord.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When Jesus tells them to take the bread and the grape juice and to break it and to eat it, he says, this do in remembrance of me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When we wash one another's feet, we're doing it because we're submitting to Jesus.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: When we come back and gather together and we partake of the bread and the grape juice, we are doing it because we are submitting

Pastor Dale Tunnell: To the will of Jesus.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Do you love Jesus?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Oh, that was poor

Pastor Dale Tunnell: I'll ask you again, do you love Jesus?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We love Jesus.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Would you do anything for Jesus?

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He tells us, Wash one another's feet as I have washed yours.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: He tells us, Partake of the bread and the grape juice.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: This do in remembrance of me.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We are submitting to the will of Jesus today.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Seventh-day Adventists practice what is known as open communion.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: That means you do not have to be a Seventh-day Adventist in order to join with us.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If you're an adult, if you've accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, we invite you to participate with us in the footwashing service.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We invite you to participate with us in partaking of the grape juice and the bread.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: If you're still a child, you have not made the decision yet to be a believer in Jesus, you've not yet been baptized.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We encourage you to wait just a little bit longer until you're old enough, until you make that decision.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: The Seventh-day Adventists practice what is known as open communion.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We're going to separate it in just a moment.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We're going to ask the ladies to go out and turn to the right and go over here to the fellowship hall.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: And if you go over there, you can find a partner.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Someone will uh uh wash your feet and someone that whose your feet you can wash.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Maybe it's somebody that you've struggled with, maybe it's somebody you've had words with, maybe it's somebody that you need to forgive.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Maybe it's somebody that is your best friend and you love them forever.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: We invite you two by two to to find a partner there in that room

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Others can go out and turn to the left, the men, and there's a room down there that's marked for the men, and the men will f be able to find a partner

Pastor Dale Tunnell: and to wash one another's feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: There's also a room if you go out and turn to the left for families.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: Husband and wife, maybe the husband needs to apologize to the wife, or the wife needs to apologize to the husband.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: or mutual submission needs to take place, or maybe a mother needs to wash her son's feet, or a son needs to wash the mother's feet, or uh a father needs to wash his daughter's feet, or something like that.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: There's a room for families if you turn to the left.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: But this is the time for us to submit to one another and submit to the will of God and to wash one another's feet.

Pastor Dale Tunnell: After washing one another's feet, we'll come back to this place, and we will partake of the bread and the grape juice together in remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ.
