  1. Well, friends, we continue in our series

  2. on the armor of God from [snorts]

  3. Ephesians 6 as we talk about this unseen

  4. battle we're in.

  5. As you know by now here, Paul in

  6. Ephesians 6, he likens uh spiritual

  7. armor that we are to wrap around us,

  8. that we are to wear into battle uh to

  9. that of a Roman soldiers.

  10. And just as a soldier

  11. needs to be armed and ready for what

  12. they might face, we too need to be

  13. ready, prepared

  14. for all the spiritual darts that the

  15. enemy might throw at us.

  16. It's not woo woo or wacky to believe in

  17. dark forces at work in this world, to

  18. believe in evil.

  19. It's wisdom, friends,

  20. and it's reality.

  21. Now, we began the series by talking

  22. about our real enemy and trying to

  23. unmask evil. And then last week, we

  24. talked about the belt of truth and the

  25. breastplate of righteousness. And today,

  26. we are going to come to our next piece

  27. of armor, shoes.

  28. But before we do, let me remind you,

  29. like Kayn did, that shoes tend to serve

  30. a purpose depending on how they're

  31. designed. She stole my thunder this

  32. morning in her children's sermon, to be

  33. honest.

  34. Sometimes she does that and I'm like,

  35. "You know what? You're just going to

  36. preach then." [laughter]

  37. Uh, but I have some pictures for you.

  38. Let's see if you guys can keep up with

  39. the kids because they nailed it. What

  40. are these for? [sighs]

  41. Yes, the sports. All the sports. Uh,

  42. what about these?

  43. Ah, comfort. I live in these when I'm

  44. not here. Um, and they're the exact

  45. opposite of what these are for.

  46. Oh, any ballerinas with the bloody toes

  47. in the room?

  48. [snorts] Uh, what about these?

  49. If you're in Utah and you don't have one

  50. of these, you guys are in real trouble.

  51. Yes, hiking, climbing. Uh, what about

  52. these?

  53. mixed reaction, I think, because I think

  54. I think they're for riding horses and

  55. tending farms, but in my life, they're

  56. for line dancing exclusively.

  57. Exclusively,

  58. certain outfits, actually. Um, and what

  59. about these? Oh, those are for torturing

  60. women.

  61. Didn't you know?

  62. Uh, finally, these. What are those for?

  63. Nothing. Exactly. God only knows. I

  64. think they're for giving up on life.

  65. And I I mean, I say that and all three

  66. of the boys in our family have a pair.

  67. Um, but we're not sure what those are

  68. for, guys. Come on. I do not understand

  69. the Crocs. God help you guys if you've

  70. got some. Must be something though.

  71. People love them. Now, we all know it's

  72. like one thing to go barefoot at the

  73. beach, but to walk through a

  74. construction zone or a battlefield

  75. without shoes on would make even the

  76. toughest of us uh suddenly overpowered,

  77. weak, pathetic, right? I mean, I don't

  78. know about you, but if you've ever

  79. stepped on a Lego in the middle of the

  80. night, on your way to the bathroom, oh

  81. Lord Jesus,

  82. there are some situations we just need

  83. to have shoes and the right shoes. And

  84. spiritually speaking, standing firm

  85. against evil is one of those situations,

  86. friends. It's why Paul tells us to strap

  87. on these boots, to have our feet fitted

  88. with the readiness that comes from the

  89. gospel of peace. Boots that will root us

  90. in gospel peace and then help us spread

  91. that gospel peace wherever we go. And we

  92. need those boots this morning, don't we?

  93. And so, let's jump in this morning. I

  94. just want you to hear the word of the

  95. Lord again from Ephesians 6:10-18.

    Ephesians 6:10–18

  96. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in

  97. his mighty power. Put on the full armor

  98. of God so that you can take your stand

  99. against the devil's schemes. For our

  100. struggle is not against flesh and blood,

  101. but against the rulers, against the

  102. authorities, against the powers of this

  103. dark world, and against the spiritual

  104. forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  105. Therefore, put on the full armor of God,

  106. so that when the day of evil comes, you

  107. may be able to stand your ground. And

  108. after you have done everything to stand,

  109. stand firm then with the belt of truth

  110. buckled around your waist, with the

  111. breastplate of righteousness in place,

  112. and with your feet fitted with the

  113. readiness that comes from the gospel of

  114. peace. And in addition to all of this,

  115. take up the shield of faith, with which

  116. you can extinguish all the flaming

  117. arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet

  118. of salvation and the sword of the spirit

  119. which is the word of God. And pray in

  120. the spirit on all occasions with all

  121. kinds of prayers and requests. And with

  122. this in mind, be alert and always keep

  123. on praying for all the Lord's people.

  124. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be

  125. to God.

  126. I was in a webinar training on Zoom this

  127. week. Um, another one, preparing clergy,

  128. how to handle potential confrontations

  129. with ICE agents. I've had to attend a

  130. number of these this last year. [snorts]

  131. Um, and this is to ensure that our

  132. immigrant and refugee populations within

  133. our congregations would be safe

  134. as we move into this season of

  135. unprecedented

  136. just trauma.

  137. Uh it's unfortunate because the rule of

  138. laws that used to keep our immigration

  139. policies humane

  140. regardless of how we feel about them. Um

  141. they're just not being followed. And so

  142. there's been a lot of trainings

  143. especially for those in hospitals and

  144. schools and churches, places that used

  145. to be sanctuary safe spaces. And I'm

  146. thankful for them. They've been helpful,

  147. full of all sorts of information, much

  148. of it unsettling.

  149. I I have learned the right questions to

  150. ask to make sure that agents are

  151. following due process if we can get them

  152. to and the advice that I'm to pull out

  153. my cell phone and we are too to film

  154. anything that we might see happening.

  155. We're supposed to write down license

  156. plate numbers and store copies of

  157. immigration paperwork for anyone in our

  158. congregation that wants to use us as an

  159. emergency contact should something

  160. horrible happen to them.

  161. Um, I've been trained on what to do and

  162. say if masked agents show up here on a

  163. Sunday morning, which spaces they're

  164. technically legally allowed to be in,

  165. and which ones they're not.

  166. It's all been to show us how we can

  167. prepare to love our people well and also

  168. follow the rule of law.

  169. But I want to share with you the advice

  170. that has been most striking in all of

  171. these trainings and was again this week

  172. actually.

  173. Advice that's been given in like the

  174. most serious of terms

  175. like pay attention everybody. If you

  176. hear nothing they said this week if you

  177. hear nothing else you hear this.

  178. This is what they've said. You must stay

  179. calm.

  180. You must breathe.

  181. You must hold on to peace

  182. so that you can keep the peace.

  183. Because as clergy, as church leaders,

  184. people are looking to you to see how you

  185. will respond. And if you lose it, they

  186. lose it.

  187. You must be unflapable.

  188. The church is not to use violence or

  189. force. So stay calm.

  190. [clears throat] This advice had me

  191. thinking immediately about flight

  192. attendants,

  193. right?

  194. When horrific, terrifying turbulence

  195. hits the plane. I mean, it's now what

  196. they call rough air. Have you noticed

  197. that? It's insane. Like, that helps. But

  198. when the turbulence hits, I mean, it is

  199. really normal for us as passengers to

  200. immediately look up and see what those

  201. flight attendants are doing, isn't it?

  202. Because if they're still passing out

  203. coffee and pretzels,

  204. then I get to take a deep breath and

  205. everything's going to be okay.

  206. All is well. It must not be that bad.

  207. But if their hands are ringing and

  208. they're running for their seats, well

  209. then I better start praying and buckle

  210. my seat belt, right?

  211. It's true.

  212. This is why airlines don't hire anxious

  213. flyers like me to be flight attendants.

  214. >> [gasps]

  215. >> Uh it's why they trained them

  216. extensively just like for months and

  217. months how to remain calm, how to revert

  218. to their training

  219. and how to trust the pilot even when

  220. they're afraid.

  221. Folks who can calm other people down and

  222. who can stay unflapable under pressure

  223. because they know that when people are

  224. afraid, we need someone to look to to

  225. gauge our anxiety and our panic. It's

  226. human to do that. And friends, I think

  227. that is what Paul is talking about here.

  228. This is precisely

  229. what Paul means when he says, "Strap the

  230. peace of the gospel around your feet.

  231. If you're going to march into anything,

  232. if you're up against evil, put peace on

  233. right away."

  234. As followers of Jesus, we're to be these

  235. people of gospel peace, of confident

  236. calm in the midst of chaos, people that

  237. others can look to in the middle of

  238. battle or awful turbulence for assurance

  239. and for courage,

  240. somewhere to gauge their panic. We're

  241. supposed to just keep passing out Diet

  242. Coke and Biscoff cookies.

  243. And And why can we do that?

  244. Because we trust the pilot.

  245. We can revert to our training.

  246. And friends, if we're not holding on to

  247. peace ourselves, if we have not taken in

  248. the peace of Christ as a regular

  249. practice, well, when life gets bumping,

  250. oh man, it's going to be really easy for

  251. the enemy, really easy for us to be

  252. rendered useless. Really easy for us to

  253. just jump in and start participating

  254. with evil.

  255. Now, I don't want to talk about fear any

  256. more than I have to this morning. We

  257. spent all of Advent talking about fear.

  258. You can go back and watch those sermons.

  259. But we did that series for the exact

  260. same reason that Paul tells us we need

  261. the boots of peace on our feet. Because

  262. when we start running scared,

  263. we're barefoot.

  264. We're barefoot.

  265. We're running into battle with panic,

  266. unarmed.

  267. And when we give into that panic, we're

  268. going to find ourselves in some real

  269. trouble. I I want to talk about what

  270. this might look like practically in our

  271. lives. I think that

  272. this can look like when we get so overly

  273. preoccupied about something happening at

  274. work that it's like all that consumes

  275. us. the worry about the project or our

  276. co-worker or the promotion or whatever

  277. it is,

  278. it absorbs all our attention.

  279. Or we're so anxious about a relationship

  280. in our life or a conflict that we're

  281. rehearsing our revenge script at night.

  282. It's all we can think about.

  283. Or we live in fear. We start to practice

  284. our lives like our daily disciplines and

  285. habits around fear of not having enough

  286. money or our kids being okay. I know a

  287. lot of parents that live like that. A

  288. preoccupation with physical health, an

  289. obsession with safety or future

  290. planning.

  291. Well, when we're when we're living like

  292. that, doom scrolling news, refresh,

  293. refresh, refresh.

  294. Well, then we're completely distracted

  295. from the truth of God's kingdom. We

  296. can't think about that.

  297. Not when we're panicked, not when we're

  298. afraid, not when we're anxious. And then

  299. our spiritual enemy has us right where

  300. evil always wants us.

  301. Distracted,

  302. distraught,

  303. disembodied

  304. and disarmed for the battle.

  305. Distracted, distraught, disembodied and

  306. disarmed.

  307. We forget that the victory has already

  308. been won in Christ and that our pilot

  309. will not crash the plane.

  310. And so we hold on to peace. We grab it.

  311. We need it.

  312. I I do really appreciate that scripture

  313. tells us the truth. And what I mean by

  314. that is nowhere does Jesus promise that

  315. holding on to peace is going to be easy.

  316. In fact, he says it's going to be quite

  317. tricky because the world is an awful

  318. place a lot of the time. Evil is in its

  319. final death throws and we are going to

  320. have trouble remaining at peace.

  321. And he says to his disciples, "My peace

  322. I leave with you. My peace I give to

  323. you. I do not give to you as the world

  324. gives. Do not let your hearts be

  325. troubled and do not be afraid.

  326. This is what Paul is telling us when he

  327. says to lace up our boots.

  328. They're not our boots. Actually, that's

  329. the only reason they're helpful to us.

  330. It's not our peace we have to depend on,

  331. friends.

  332. They're Jesus's boots.

  333. My peace I give to you. I left my boots

  334. for you.

  335. put them on.

  336. It's God's very peace that's going to

  337. help us stay steady and remain calm and

  338. try and be unflapable in these moments.

  339. And where does that come from? What's

  340. the heartbeat of that peace? What's the

  341. the song in your mind that reminds you

  342. that the plane will not crash? It is the

  343. gospel. It is the promise that through

  344. the death and resurrection of Jesus

  345. Christ, death has been defeated. You're

  346. forgiven. It's who you really are. You

  347. don't have to live in shame and fear

  348. anymore. You don't have to fight back.

  349. Why? Because your God fights for you.

  350. You don't have to be cruel and mean and

  351. wield the same weapons of the folks that

  352. come against you.

  353. Because God has got you.

  354. And only then will we be able to hold

  355. fast

  356. to stand firm in the face of evil.

  357. to have the courage to step in the way

  358. and say, "You don't get to treat people

  359. that way."

  360. We had a great conversation last week

  361. when we were talking about evil in the

  362. Q&A after uh church and I said

  363. something. I'm going to repeat it here

  364. just a little loud for everybody at the

  365. back, too.

  366. Evil is big and scary and conceptual.

  367. That's why Paul calls it the powers, the

  368. dark forces at work in our world. But

  369. but it is very true that evil often has

  370. a name and a face. And what I mean by

  371. that

  372. is that it's essential we remember that

  373. there are times when we will encounter

  374. evil. And our job as people deeply

  375. rooted in the peace of the gospel are to

  376. stand and say that is not how we treat

  377. one another.

  378. No, I will not sign on to that lie.

  379. Now, those people with the name in the

  380. face, they're not evil.

  381. They are wounded.

  382. They are sick.

  383. I said it to the class and I want you to

  384. hear it. You have actually never met an

  385. evil person.

  386. Not once, not ever. You have not met an

  387. evil person. You've never seen one on

  388. the news. There's not one in the White

  389. House.

  390. You have met sick,

  391. wounded, traumatized people. And when

  392. people are in positions of power, when

  393. they are sick and wounded and

  394. traumatized,

  395. they spill that trauma and illness

  396. everywhere else. I don't care if that's

  397. your stepdad or the neighbor down the

  398. street or your coworker.

  399. They're not evil.

  400. They are wounded and captive to evil.

  401. Which means we don't get to demonize the

  402. human being in front of us. No matter

  403. how much you might want to,

  404. it does mean that when evil has a name

  405. in a face,

  406. as people of faith, it is appropriate to

  407. stand up and say, "Not here, not me.

  408. Not my church, not my community, not my

  409. neighbor.

  410. You will only have the ability to stand

  411. firm and to be unflapable

  412. if you are rooted in the peace of Christ

  413. that defines you and names you and is

  414. the foundation upon which you stand.

  415. And you'll know really quick if you can

  416. hold on to it because do you believe the

  417. gospel is good news just for you? Or do

  418. you believe it's good news for the whole

  419. world, even the sickest among us?

  420. Because it is the only hope we've got,

  421. friends,

  422. that people would come to recognize

  423. their belovedness and get well

  424. and repent and make amends for the

  425. trauma that they have caused in this

  426. world. But us adding to the trauma.

  427. No.

  428. As your flight attendant today, let me

  429. tell you something right now. There is

  430. so much to be worried about in this

  431. world.

  432. So much concerning things happening. So

  433. much to grieve about and scream about

  434. and shake your fists about. I've been

  435. yelling at God all weekend.

  436. A lot to pray for, a lot to stand firm

  437. against. But what I was reminded of this

  438. week as I was studying for this sermon

  439. and deeply convicted by what it is Jesus

  440. calls us to do,

  441. we actually don't have anything to worry

  442. about.

  443. If we believe what we come in here and

  444. sing about and pray about, if we believe

  445. in the gospel, then we actually are

  446. naming to a world that God has won.

  447. That love will conquer over evil every

  448. single time. That death can take

  449. everything from us. But it doesn't take

  450. our soul.

  451. Earlier in Ephesians, Paul wrote that

  452. Jesus is our peace.

  453. He's the one who tore down the dividing

  454. wall of hostility and rage and anger and

  455. racism and stick in whatever you would

  456. like there. He tore it all down to make

  457. us one. He came and proclaimed the good

  458. news of peace to all who were the

  459. furthest away. And even the folks who

  460. were up close, everybody gets that

  461. proclamation.

  462. And so, friends, tie up your bootstraps.

  463. step into peace.

  464. You might have to, and Halen modeled

  465. this for our kids in the children's

  466. sermon, you might have to do it over and

  467. over and over all day long. Every time

  468. you realize you're in vengeance, you be

  469. like, "Took the dang boots off,

  470. swirling around,

  471. despair." Nope.

  472. The gospel is what is true about me and

  473. everybody else.

  474. Laying in bed,

  475. I don't know how you jump up in bed, but

  476. shift your body

  477. as many times as you have to

  478. because we are people that clothe

  479. ourselves in Christ. We are people that

  480. strap armor, armor [snorts] like peace

  481. to our bodies

  482. so that we can be peace in God's world.

  483. Isaiah says it well. How beautiful in

  484. the mountains are the feet of the one

  485. who brings good news. The feet of the

  486. one who proclaims peace, who brings good

  487. news, who proclaims salvation, who says

  488. to the world, "Your God reigns.

  489. Blessed are the peacemakers." Jesus

  490. said, "They will be called the children

  491. of God."

  492. And so, friends, I want you as you go

  493. out into the world this week, I want you

  494. to do this on your social media

  495. platforms. I want you to do it at work

  496. and among your family and in front of

  497. your neighbors. I want you to be holy

  498. flight attendants.

  499. I want you to trust that your pilot will

  500. not crash this plane.

  501. We are okay. Revert to your sacred

  502. training.

  503. Go back to what is true and right and

  504. good. And you know,

  505. don't get sucked in.

  506. May we be calm assurance.

  507. May we be unflapable in the face of

  508. evil. Standing firm in the peace of our

  509. God. Not your peace, Christ's peace.

  510. And so I'm going to invite you to take a

  511. couple deep breaths. You can close your

  512. eyes if you want. I'm going to read over

  513. you my favorite prayer when I am angry

  514. and afraid.

  515. I'm going to read three times.

  516. Let nothing disturb you.

  517. Let nothing frighten you.

  518. All things pass.

  519. God never changes.

  520. Patience obtains all it seeks.

  521. Those who have God lack nothing.

  522. God alone suffices.

  523. Big deep breaths.
