  1. Well, friends, we um are continuing this

  2. morning in our series on the armor of

  3. God. You probably picked that up in our

  4. liturgy already that we're talking about

  5. the helmet of salvation today. Um we're

  6. talking about this unseen battle we're

  7. in. Uh we can't always reach out and

  8. grab it and touch it and name it. Um but

  9. but Paul tells us uh in this metaphor of

  10. putting on pieces of armor how we are to

  11. stand in the face of evil. How we are to

  12. make it through when the world feels

  13. dark and overwhelming. And so here the

  14. word of the Lord. We've been reading

  15. this each week from Ephesians 6:10-18.

    Ephesians 6:10–18

  16. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in

  17. his mighty power. Put on the full armor

  18. of God so that you can take your stand

  19. against the devil's schemes. For our

  20. struggle is not against flesh and blood,

  21. but against the rulers, against the

  22. authorities, against the powers of this

  23. dark world, and against the spiritual

  24. forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

  25. Therefore, put on the full armor of God,

  26. so that when the day of evil comes, you

  27. may be able to stand your ground. And

  28. after you have done everything to stand,

  29. stand firm then, with the belt of truth

  30. tucked around your waist and the

  31. breastplate of righteousness in place,

  32. and with your feet fitted with the

  33. readiness that comes from the gospel of

  34. peace. In addition to all of this, take

  35. up the shield of faith with which you

  36. can extinguish all the flaming arrows of

  37. the evil one. Take the helmet of

  38. salvation and the sword of the spirit,

  39. which is the word of God, and pray in

  40. the spirit on all occasions with all

  41. kinds of prayers and requests. With this

  42. in mind, be alert and always keep on

  43. praying for all the Lord's people. This

  44. is the word of the Lord.

  45. >> Thanks be to God.

  46. Well, several weeks ago, we began this

  47. series by like unmasking evil, trying to

  48. help us understand uh our real enemy,

  49. who Paul tells us is not flesh and blood

  50. human beings, even though we often want

  51. to make them our enemy.

  52. Um, but it's actually these other

  53. spiritual forces of evil and darkness in

  54. the world that are trying to corrupt the

  55. good, that are trying to cause us

  56. division and hatred and ultimately

  57. violence. The whole letter to the

  58. Ephesians is all about how we are to be

  59. in relationship with each other and that

  60. there is nothing that should tear us

  61. apart from one another. All these

  62. distinctives that we used to think

  63. matter when we become the people of

  64. Christ, the family of God, we put them

  65. aside

  66. and and we choose to love each other. We

  67. choose to be unified. Not uniformity,

  68. but unified

  69. with all our diversity. Um we come

  70. together in the love of God. And so Paul

  71. says evil is actually all the things

  72. that try and divide you that try and

  73. make you think that there are insiders

  74. and outsiders.

  75. There are people good enough and then

  76. there are people that are not good

  77. enough. And Paul says pay attention

  78. because that is a battle. And to be able

  79. to stand firm in the face of that in in

  80. all that would divide us. Um, the only

  81. way we're going to be able to do it is

  82. to put on these attributes of God, this

  83. armor of God. Things like truth and

  84. righteousness and peace and faith.

  85. Attributes that I remind you again this

  86. morning, they're not just like random

  87. attributes, random pieces of armor. They

  88. are the very attributes of our God. This

  89. is God's armor, God's God's faith, God's

  90. trust,

  91. God's peace that we strap to ourselves

  92. in order to be able to stand firm. We

  93. wrap that stuff around us and then when

  94. we face evil, we will be able to stand.

  95. This morning we turn to one of our last

  96. pieces of armor, this helmet of

  97. salvation. But I think to kind of get at

  98. this, we kind of need to know what we're

  99. talking about when we say salvation. I

  100. mean, what does it mean to be saved?

  101. That's a very churchy word if you've

  102. been in church long. And people

  103. interpret salvation and being saved in a

  104. number of different ways.

  105. Now you should know that in the Greek um

  106. we see over and over these two terms or

  107. variations of these terms. So is the

  108. word for salvation or deliverance or to

  109. be recovered. Think of recovery work or

  110. healed.

  111. Soo is just the verb form. So to save

  112. something or someone to rescue.

  113. Um but it's pretty broadly used in

  114. scripture this word.

  115. It really is. You can find examples of

  116. people being saved physically. So like

  117. think of from danger

  118. or storms,

  119. being saved from an illness, being

  120. healed or delivered.

  121. And then we see it used more

  122. metaphorically like talking about

  123. emotional salvation.

  124. Salvation is experienced through our

  125. relational repair. we read about a and

  126. then we often and I think this is the

  127. way we we most often are talking about

  128. it especially in church settings we see

  129. salvation talked about spiritually like

  130. God is saving our souls

  131. God is transforming us by this salvation

  132. work God's doing

  133. and then beyond all the ways that

  134. salvation is talked about um in

  135. impacting the world healing and rescuing

  136. and redeeming the world and us it's also

  137. used in all the time tenses too. And so

  138. you will read lots and lots of texts in

  139. the past tense. God has saved you.

  140. That work on the cross accomplished your

  141. salvation. You can be assured that you

  142. are saved. Lots and lots of those. And

  143. then you see them in the present tense.

  144. You'll read passages of scripture that

  145. say that God is presently at work saving

  146. us. That the salvation work of God is

  147. happening in us even now at this moment.

  148. And so you're like, "So God already

  149. saved me and God is still saving me

  150. according to scripture." Yes. And then

  151. you even get the future tense, these

  152. promises of a future salvation. So your

  153. your body will not ultimately be the end

  154. of you, that we will go on to be saved

  155. in time and eternity. And so salvation,

  156. it's all over the place. Um all the

  157. tenses, it's all the ways past, present,

  158. or future that God is rescuing us.

  159. rescuing the world, saving you, saving

  160. me, saving the world. And so, we're told

  161. to take this idea, this concept of

  162. salvation, and we're supposed to strap

  163. it on our heads like a helmet to protect

  164. us.

  165. But how is this protective armor? How is

  166. salvation protective for our minds?

  167. How does it help us stand in the face of

  168. evil?

  169. I want to suggest kind of two key ways.

  170. The helmet of salvation, it protects us

  171. in how we think and what we believe.

  172. And I'm sure there are other ways, but I

  173. just want to hit those two this morning.

  174. How we think and what we believe. Let me

  175. just ask you a few questions to just

  176. think about rhetorically.

  177. How do you discern what's right? Like in

  178. your thinking, when you're confronted by

  179. something, how do you go, "Yep, that's

  180. true." And that's not

  181. h how do you discern what's the ne next

  182. right step to take? H how do you

  183. evaluate your thinking? Do you have a

  184. process of of how you evaluate your

  185. thoughts

  186. to see if there have been any like

  187. dangerous ideologies that maybe have

  188. slipped in or you've gotten stuck in

  189. some really bad theology

  190. and suddenly you're aware of it. Or or

  191. maybe it's more about like

  192. self-fulfilling narratives of shame.

  193. How do you recognize when your thinking

  194. patterns have started to circle around

  195. that stuff?

  196. Do you have a way of doing it?

  197. What about when you even know when

  198. something's evil, but you really can't

  199. seem to help stop thinking about the

  200. dark thought

  201. that keeps surfacing again and again?

  202. Maybe it's hateful or it's about revenge

  203. or about something else.

  204. But even though you know it's not what

  205. you want to be thinking about, there it

  206. is again.

  207. There are some very real threats, I

  208. think, to keeping our thinking healthy.

  209. Um, in fact, I'd say that our thinking

  210. is probably the place where I think the

  211. enemy can get to us real quick, real

  212. fast.

  213. We talked a few weeks about ago about

  214. how evil is subtle, right? It's sneaky.

  215. It never comes in just like straight and

  216. directly at you. It comes sideways. And

  217. it sounds true, but it's not quite true.

  218. And I think this is part of why Paul

  219. says, "Put onto your head the helmet of

  220. salvation." be really careful about your

  221. thinking patterns

  222. because if evil can start to warp those

  223. things then it will impact every other

  224. area of our life

  225. which means that guarding our minds by

  226. the truth of God's rescue putting on

  227. this helmet of salvation it actually

  228. ends up being pretty lifesaving

  229. relationships saving for us

  230. um you guys know that I often quote

  231. Father Richard Roar he's a Franciscan

  232. priest an incredible author I think he's

  233. probably one of the greatest living

  234. spiritual teachers of our time. Um, and

  235. he talks quite a bit about this. He

  236. talks about what he calls stinking

  237. thinking.

  238. I know. I love that. Um, it's used it's

  239. a it's a phrase used in recovery work a

  240. lot actually. Um, and he's written a

  241. book on the 12 steps actually. Um, but

  242. he I'm going to show you a threeminut

  243. clip from him right now where he talks

  244. about how how do we guard our minds? Um,

  245. what does it mean to think about our

  246. thinking?

  247. The best thing is to invite them

  248. to observe their stream of consciousness

  249. with some degree of honesty

  250. and to notice the patterns. This doesn't

  251. sound spiritual at all. I'm sorry, but

  252. it really is. It's an exercise in huge

  253. canosis, letting go of because you're

  254. going to see that not just a few people

  255. are OCD.

  256. The universal addiction is that all

  257. people are addicted to their way of

  258. thinking.

  259. >> We all are. I am. You are. You are. Why

  260. wouldn't you be?

  261. >> You process things in a certain way. You

  262. have to suffer that humiliation by

  263. seeing how silly it is that this dog of

  264. my mind is going back to the same vomit

  265. to quote Proverbs. The the every 30

  266. seconds I'm tending to resentment.

  267. Whatever it might be, I'm tending to

  268. judgmentalism. I'm tell t tending to

  269. dismissal. Whatever your pattern is,

  270. paranoia,

  271. anger, superiority complex. Uh, oh my

  272. god, this is humiliating.

  273. Now I think that's why contemplation so

  274. easily has died out again and again

  275. >> because when the spirit you know Mark 1

  276. 1313 13-50 where the spirit drives Jesus

  277. into the wilderness you have to be

  278. driven there almost and the first thing

  279. that comes up are the wild beasts if you

  280. remember the text. Huh?

  281. >> Yeah.

  282. >> The wild beasts just all your crap. I

  283. hate to say it.

  284. >> St. Anthony as well.

  285. >> Very good. All your silly stupid

  286. patterns. of repetitive. You know, it

  287. was u uh Echartole who lives in

  288. Vancouver that I I wrote to after he

  289. wrote his book, The Power of Now. And I

  290. thanked him. I said,

  291. >> you know, you really opened up the older

  292. contemplative tradition. But you did it

  293. in a most wise way without using

  294. Christian vocabulary so people could

  295. write you off. But we call it the

  296. practice of the present moment or the

  297. sacrament of the presence of God in in

  298. Catholic vocabulary.

  299. >> Uh and I said, 'You said it without

  300. saying it.

  301. >> Thank you. And in that first book, if

  302. you ever read it at that point, he says

  303. 82% of human thought is repetitive and

  304. useless. And somewhat jokingly, I wrote

  305. to him, he lives in a rather simple

  306. apartment close to the airport at that

  307. time in Vancouver. And uh he wrote me

  308. back a sweet note uh because I said I

  309. only disagree with you on one point. I

  310. think it's 92%. And I was saying it

  311. somewhat facitiously but if you look at

  312. his latest book he says 98%.

  313. >> Wow.

  314. >> 98% of human thought is repetitive and

  315. useless.

  316. >> So you know

  317. >> whole city is running on that stream of

  318. thought.

  319. >> Yes. Yeah. You know, it's so humiliating

  320. to see this that we think think the same

  321. thought over and over and over again. So

  322. when Dart, who we've been making the

  323. whipping boy for hundreds of years,

  324. rightly so. I think, therefore I am, he

  325. actually was halfight. The western

  326. person thinks they are their thinking

  327. >> and their thinking is stinking thinking

  328. by spiritual standards. It's obsessive,

  329. compulsive, repetitive, paranoid, angry.

  330. I mean look at our politics. yours

  331. appears to be a little better than ours.

  332. Uh but he just want us to cry

  333. >> at the level of American political

  334. discourse.

  335. >> So we can have all these people we've

  336. sent to universities

  337. educated in intellects but have not gone

  338. above the ceiling to wisdom.

  339. >> Oh, I should just have Richard Roar

  340. preach more of my sermons.

  341. Uh but he he speaks and he writes about

  342. this stinking thinking quite a bit

  343. actually. Um and he reminds us that he

  344. he refers to it as contemplation in that

  345. video. But things like prayer and

  346. meditation and ruminating on scripture,

  347. these are these practices of

  348. contemplation that teach us how to

  349. observe our minds, how to think about

  350. our thinking, he says, with some degree

  351. of honesty.

  352. Some degree of honesty.

  353. I love that reference from Echartole who

  354. now agrees with him that it's more than

  355. the the first book. 98% of human thought

  356. is repetitive and useless or

  357. destructive.

  358. I mean, think about your own thinking

  359. for a second.

  360. Repetitive, useless, and potentially

  361. destructive.

  362. I I think that's what he means when he

  363. says it's humiliating once you realize

  364. it. I'm going to quote Roar here for a

  365. second.

  366. Because when we come to see how

  367. self-serving, how petty, how

  368. narcissistic, how compulsive our

  369. thinking is, we realize how trapped and

  370. unfree we are. We might even call it

  371. possessed.

  372. I truly believe the only cure for

  373. possession is repossession

  374. by our original source by God. To use

  375. the language most often found in

  376. recovery circles, this is what a vital

  377. spiritual experience does for all of us.

  378. Whether we name it as Jesus, God's

  379. spirit, higher power, or love.

  380. Afterward, we simply know that we belong

  381. in this world, that we are being held by

  382. some larger force. For some seemingly

  383. illogical reason, life then feels okay

  384. and even good and right and purposeful.

  385. This is what it feels like to be saved.

  386. I loved that line.

  387. If you're thinking makes you feel like

  388. sometimes you must be possessed, what

  389. might it mean to be repossessed

  390. but by the love of God?

  391. This is what I think Paul is getting at

  392. when he says, "Put the helmet of

  393. salvation on your heads.

  394. We are to measure our thinking patterns

  395. according to the love of God, the truth

  396. of God." And and Paul doesn't just talk

  397. about this here in Ephesians, friends.

  398. This is in every single letter he writes

  399. to the church in Corinth. He says this,

  400. "For though we live in the world, we do

  401. not wage war as the world does. The

  402. weapons we fight with are not the

  403. weapons of the world. On the contrary,

  404. they have divine power to demolish

  405. strongholds. We demolish arguments and

  406. every pretension that sets itself up

  407. against the knowledge of God. We take

  408. every we take captive every thought to

  409. make it obedient to Christ.

  410. Later to the Romans, he'll write this.

  411. Do not conform to the pattern of this

  412. world, but be transformed by the

  413. renewing of your mind. Then you will be

  414. able to test and approve what God's will

  415. is, his good and pleasing and perfect

  416. will. to the church at Philippi. He

  417. writes this, "D" not be anxious about

  418. anything, but in every situation by

  419. prayer and petition with thanksgiving,

  420. present your requests to God, and the

  421. peace of God which transcends all

  422. understanding will guard your hearts and

  423. your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally,

  424. brothers and sisters, whatever is true,

  425. whatever is noble, whatever is right,

  426. whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

  427. whatever is admirable, if anything is

  428. excellent or praiseworthy, think about

  429. such things.

  430. Are you seeing the theme here for him?

  431. Every letter, our thinking matters.

  432. Stinking thinking,

  433. it will take us right out of the battle.

  434. But protecting our minds with the truth

  435. of our salvation in Christ, it holds us

  436. steady,

  437. especially when we're up against

  438. spiritual darkness and conflict. That is

  439. one way the helmet serves us. It

  440. protects how we think. The other way, it

  441. protects what we believe. how we

  442. believe.

  443. I especially about who we are. I think

  444. this is really important. And and some

  445. of you might be thinking, wait, thinking

  446. and belief, Jamie, that's the same

  447. thing. And I would tell you, no, it's

  448. not. No, it's not.

  449. Belief is different. Your beliefs go

  450. deeper. They're like down in your core

  451. identity. In fact, what we believe, we

  452. don't even think about it. We just

  453. assume it's reality. It's not even

  454. something we have to investigate. We

  455. take our deeply held beliefs for

  456. granted. They're often rooted so deeply

  457. in our identity and value system that we

  458. don't even it doesn't occur to us to

  459. even think about them, much less

  460. question them.

  461. And it can be one more place that I

  462. think the enemy and evil can get us if

  463. we if especially if we've got deeply

  464. held beliefs that are dangerous.

  465. And and we can talk about like

  466. ideologies and cultural values and

  467. things like that, but actually I want to

  468. talk a little more personally.

  469. Do you believe you matter?

  470. Do you at your core think you're

  471. not really capable

  472. of ever being truly saved?

  473. Do you think you can't possibly deserve

  474. that?

  475. Is there somewhere deep inside of you

  476. where you think you're just too broken?

  477. that you won't be able to come back from

  478. whatever it is that's happened to you or

  479. from whatever it is you've done. Or

  480. worst of all, the most dangerous belief

  481. I think we can hold, and I know way too

  482. many people that feel like this. Do you

  483. believe that you're really not capable

  484. of being loved?

  485. You're unlovable.

  486. Which is why I think I'm an earworm to

  487. many of you because I say this all the

  488. time.

  489. But I want you to hear it again today.

  490. The truth about who you are,

  491. who I am, and who everybody else is. The

  492. most true thing about us is that we are

  493. the beloved children of God.

  494. It is the most true thing about you.

  495. No one gets to take that away from you.

  496. And there I I know are lots of things

  497. that are true about you. True about

  498. things you've done. True about things

  499. that have happened to you to be sure.

  500. But that is not the most true thing

  501. about you. The most true thing about you

  502. is that you were created in the image of

  503. God.

  504. That the divine is imprinted on your

  505. soul. That you come from love. That you

  506. were made for love. That goodness is

  507. ultimately what is most true about you.

  508. You are loved.

  509. That is actually who you really are.

  510. And holding on to that belief, getting

  511. that so deeply inside of you that it

  512. informs your thinking patterns and the

  513. way you live and operate in the world.

  514. That is maybe one of the most important

  515. things you can do.

  516. And it is what the helmet of salvation

  517. will help you do because it is a

  518. constant reminder that God has rescued

  519. you. That you are worth rescue.

  520. That nothing will be able to keep you

  521. from the love of God. Nothing.

  522. And when we lose sight of our

  523. belovedness,

  524. we get we get offkilter real quick. So

  525. what does it look like real quickly to

  526. have the helmet of salvation on your

  527. head? Here, here are five things. There

  528. could be many others, and I'll rattle

  529. through them really quick.

  530. I think if you were wearing that helmet

  531. long enough, you give up on regret.

  532. You give up on it. You don't need to

  533. ruminate anymore about like the past

  534. because you have realized that

  535. everything belongs.

  536. Like your whole life, every every part

  537. of it, the good, bad, and ugly, like

  538. none of it prevents you from being loved

  539. and included by God. And so you don't

  540. need to live in regret.

  541. You no longer need shame to define you.

  542. Two, I think people that wear the helmet

  543. of salvation are slower to speak

  544. because they know the allimp important

  545. truth that you only know what you know,

  546. right? And you don't know what you don't

  547. know. And so there's this humility to

  548. being wrapped in the salvation and

  549. rescue of God that allows you to go,

  550. maybe I'll listen before I respond.

  551. maybe I don't know what their experience

  552. has been like. So, they're slow to

  553. speak. Three, I think they live

  554. open-handed

  555. with everything. I mean, that they can

  556. let conflict roll off their shoulders

  557. because they really believe that God

  558. fights their battles for them. They can

  559. be generous with their time and their

  560. money. They can give power and

  561. leadership away. They can help other

  562. people get ahead because they trust that

  563. God's got them. They're so rooted in in

  564. their salvation that they don't have to

  565. save themselves anymore. And so they

  566. live open-handed.

  567. Four, I think they're not worried about

  568. the future.

  569. Why? Because they don't need to be in

  570. control anymore

  571. because they so believe that God's got

  572. it. That they've been rescued already

  573. and that God will surely rescue them

  574. again when they need it. And so there's

  575. not a lot of energy spent on like what's

  576. going to happen tomorrow and in 10

  577. years. And then finally, I think they

  578. live in gratitude.

  579. I think they live with this like

  580. generous posture because like they are

  581. aware of their rescue. And so they can't

  582. help but just be like, "Thank God for

  583. it." And anytime they see somebody else

  584. that's trapped that could use a little

  585. rescue, they're ready to show up and

  586. say, "God's got you, too.

  587. You're not actually unlovable.

  588. I I could go on and on, but that's what

  589. someone looks like and thinks like and

  590. believes like, who roots themselves in

  591. the salvation of God, who wraps that

  592. around their mind and their heart.

  593. And and I will say this, if you're not

  594. heading in that direction, friends,

  595. here's my advice to you. It's the same

  596. as roars. Evaluate your thinking.

  597. Think about your thoughts with again

  598. what he said with some degree of

  599. honesty.

  600. Where has stinking thinking grabbed

  601. hold? How much of your thinking is it?

  602. 98% that's repetitive and useless and

  603. potentially destructive

  604. because we don't want to head into

  605. battle with our h our head exposed. We

  606. want to strap that helmet on. We want to

  607. root ourselves in the saving grace of

  608. God and let that be what is true about

  609. us and inform our living. And so I want

  610. to close by just inviting you to recite

  611. this prayer with me.

  612. God, you have made me and saved me. You

  613. know my mind, my beliefs, and my

  614. thinking patterns. I have believed

  615. things that are not true. I have lived

  616. by biases and beliefs that undercut my

  617. beloved identity.

  618. Please heal the repetitive, useless, and

  619. destructive thinking patterns of my mind

  620. and stop connections in my brain that

  621. are tied to old ways of thinking that do

  622. not lead to life. God, please create and

  623. deepen new neural pathways with the

  624. truth of your salvation. Help me

  625. remember what is true about me. Rewire

  626. broken places to bring life and love

  627. more deeply into my consciousness. Help

  628. me know deep down that I am filled with

  629. your mercy and I am not trapped by what

  630. the world and what it says about me. Put

  631. your helmet of salvation upon my head

  632. and protect me from evil. Help me stand

  633. firm. Amen.
