  1. For His glory and for our good, let's hear the word of the Lord

  2. this morning. Christ is the image of the

  3. invisible God, the first born of all creation.

  4. For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth,

  5. visible and invisible, whether Thrones or dominions or rollers

  6. or authorities, all things were created through Him and for Him.

  7. And He is before all things, and He is in Him.

  8. All things hold together and He is the bot, the head of the

  9. body, the church. He is the beginning, the first

  10. born from the dead, that in everything he might be

  11. preeminent. And then from Matthew Jesus

  12. said, seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and

  13. all these things will be added to you.

  14. Paul in Galatians chapter 2. I have been crucified with

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  15. Christ. It is no longer I who live, but

  16. Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh.

  17. I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave

  18. himself for me. This is the word of the Lord.

  19. Thanks be to God. The grass Withers and the

  20. flowers say, but our word of our Lord stands forever.

  21. Amen. Please be seated.

  22. There are few things as annoying as a truly full blown

  23. self-centered person. Most of you know somebody like

  24. this, somebody whose world revolves around them and they

  25. think that the world revolves around them, that every

  26. conversation they have is all about them, that every we

  27. thought that they think tends to be about them.

  28. They're just incredibly self-centered in all that they

  29. tend to think about, and it shows in everything that they

  30. do. And most of us are really

  31. annoyed by that, with good reason, because where does that

  32. leave us? If they have a world centered

  33. around them, what does that mean for everybody else?

  34. They truly full blown self-centered person can be

  35. incredibly annoying. I should stop for a second and

  36. make a note here that at 240 yesterday afternoon around 2:40,

  37. a group of your leaders here, the elders and some of the staff

  38. gathered together with the representatives from the

  39. denomination, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and dotted

  40. our last I and crossed our last T.

  41. We are now formally part the EPC.

  42. Now that's worth a whoop or two as part of that move.

  43. As part of that move, what we want to do is try to go back a

  44. little bit and reassert what it is that we believe.

  45. Who are we as a church? We want to do that for two

  46. reasons. One, we want to remind ourselves

  47. this is who we are. And two, we want to also express

  48. what we aspire to be. So as we talked about, hey, this

  49. is who we are. We know that we're only

  50. capturing a picture of the reality.

  51. We we are these things to some extent by God's grace, but we

  52. also know that by the Scriptures push we need to be these things

  53. even more and more. And so I've come up with a quick

  54. little description here about what Hebron is Hebron in what we

  55. aspire to be. Hebron Church is a biblically

  56. based, Christ centered community of disciples, A reformed

  57. classically evangelical church in the Presbyterian tradition,

  58. worshipping, growing and serving Christ in the East Hills of

  59. Pittsburgh. Now my goal is to try to go over

  60. each one of these characteristics over the next

  61. couple of weeks together, pointing out where it is that I

  62. think that Heaven Church's satisfactory presently fulfills

  63. this, but also to put forward to us kind of a challenge that hey,

  64. we don't ever want to lose sight of these goals.

  65. We don't want to lose sight of these descriptors that kind of

  66. describe who we are. And many of them are kind of

  67. self-evident. For instance, last week we

  68. looked at what it means that we are biblically based, and we

  69. described how that is both in the present expression of Hebron

  70. Church and what we want Hebron Church to be.

  71. And in part, what I trust is most people's connection.

  72. A lot of you are biblically based, and yet all of us want to

  73. aspire to be biblically based. Today we're going to take a look

  74. at that second descriptor. They're Christ centered.

  75. What does it mean to be Christ centered?

  76. And I need to do a here like I did last week as well.

  77. And to acknowledge that it'd be really hard, I think, to find a

  78. Christian Church that wouldn't somewhere along the lines

  79. acknowledge Christ as the center of what they're doing.

  80. Be to be Christ centered is not unique to Heber and it is

  81. something that I think a lot of people identify with.

  82. But I want to use the term kind of specifically and want to use

  83. that illustration of a self-centered person kind of as

  84. a corollary or kind of as a contrast to what we mean by

  85. being Christ centered or a Christ centered church.

  86. To be a self-centered person. Part of the reason why that's so

  87. annoying is because it manifests itself.

  88. It shows itself on the outside all the time.

  89. The person's always talking about themselves.

  90. They only think about themselves every.

  91. The world revolves around them and they show it to the outside

  92. because let's face it, the force of sin drives each and every

  93. person in this room to be incredibly self-serving

  94. self-centered. We all tend to be self-centered,

  95. but hopefully, by God's grace, we're all not that annoyingly

  96. self-centered because we tamp it down, we push it down, we hide

  97. it a little bit. That's what we do with our self

  98. centeredness. That is what I fear a lot of

  99. churches might do with their Christ centeredness and by a lot

  100. of churches. What I'm scared about is Hebron

  101. Church. It's easy to say, hey, Hebron

  102. Church is a Christ centered church, but it's a challenge to

  103. make sure that we're not tamping that down, that that's not

  104. drifting into the background, that that isn't just a vague

  105. spirituality that kind of describes Heaven church.

  106. Well, Heaven church is Christ centered.

  107. Of course it is. No, I want it to be manifest.

  108. I want it to show itself just like that self-centered

  109. individual shows itself, manifests that characteristic in

  110. a bad way. So I want this self Christ

  111. centered. Sorry, I want this Christ

  112. centered character of Hebron Church to show itself to

  113. manifest, to be on the outside all the time.

  114. Now what do I mean by Christ centered?

  115. I mean that the controlling focus and the driving force of

  116. everything we do is Jesus Christ.

  117. The controlling focus and the driving force of everything we

  118. do is Jesus Christ. Picture this a little bit for

  119. you. So let's take it on an

  120. individual level. Let's put it on an individual

  121. level for a second. Imagine your life, your life is

  122. a big bubble. OK, imagine a big bubble that's

  123. that's representative of your life as a whole.

  124. So imagine a big bubble around me right now.

  125. And inside that bubble are a bunch of balls.

  126. And the individual balls are all represent something very crucial

  127. in your life, something very important.

  128. And maybe the size of the ball represents how important that

  129. thing is to you. And so you've got a ball in

  130. there for your job, your that's a big ball and your family and

  131. that's a huge ball. You enjoy reading certain

  132. things, that's a smaller ball. Your finances, that's a ball

  133. that's in the church, your friendships, that's a smaller

  134. ball. Your church is a larger ball.

  135. You've got all these different balls inside this big bubble

  136. that represents your life. What you put at the center of

  137. the of the bubble controls everything else, handles all the

  138. rest of those balls and most of us try to stick ourselves in the

  139. center of that bubble. We're in the center of that

  140. bubble and we're juggling all these different balls.

  141. I have a real small talented juggling.

  142. It's a small talents, but I can't keep 3 balls up in the air

  143. a little bit. At least I used to.

  144. So I was planning on using this as an illustration.

  145. I thought, oh, I could get up there and have juggle the balls

  146. and stuff like that. So I asked Kelly yesterday, get

  147. me three things that I could juggle and she get me three

  148. things and Wham, they all went on the floor right away.

  149. So hence I'm not going to juggle.

  150. But the idea is that in the in this sphere, this bubble, the

  151. thing in the center is holding everything up, keeping

  152. everything else juggled in your life.

  153. And So what we do is we recognize early on in our lives,

  154. if we have any sense of self-awareness, that sticking

  155. ourselves in the center of that bubble is a bad choice, is a

  156. failure. Now, the drive of sin, the push

  157. of our own selfishness is to place ourselves in the center.

  158. I know it true. I feel it every day.

  159. I feel it every minute to make myself the center of my life,

  160. the center of my world. But I wasn't created to be in

  161. the center of my life. The center of my life is not set

  162. apart for me, nor is it set apart for my family.

  163. Well, my family is incredibly important to me.

  164. My wife is glorious in my life. All these things.

  165. I love my kids most of the time. I have this great appreciation

  166. for my family. But to stick my family in the

  167. center of that bubble is to collapse.

  168. The bubble is to have that bubble shatter and break.

  169. I love my church. I love my job, but to put either

  170. of those in the center is to invite the bubble to shatter and

  171. to break because they weren't created to carry that weight.

  172. They weren't created to be in the center.

  173. What goes in the center of my life, the core thing, the

  174. driving focus and the driving force is Jesus Christ.

  175. The controlling focus, the driving force is Jesus Christ.

  176. He's in the center and by doing so he keeps.

  177. Now translate that out then to our church.

  178. What does it mean that we are a church that is a Christ centered

  179. church? We have a growing youth ministry

  180. and it's wonderful to see it growing and, and, and developing

  181. and the excitement that there is with that kind of thing.

  182. But if we're a youth ministry centered church, that bubble is

  183. bound to collapse. We have a fabulous worship team.

  184. Don't we have a fabulous worship team?

  185. We have a fabulous worship team, but if is it crucial as our

  186. worship, is it crucial as they are in guiding us and leading us

  187. every day into God's presence? That can't be the center focus

  188. of our bubble. If it is, our bubble will surely

  189. collapse. We do great global missions.

  190. Jerry was talking about that earlier.

  191. We have wonderful local missions all over the place.

  192. We do wonderful things with our 70s and over 70s group.

  193. We have a good fellowship time. We have growth groups and Bible

  194. studies that help lead us into the church, into God's presence.

  195. All of these things are fabulous and wonderful.

  196. But if any of those things become the center focus of the

  197. bubble, the bubble is bound to collapse.

  198. It is bound to shatter. Now, why do you mention this?

  199. The concern is that there are so many wonderful things out there,

  200. there are so many wonderful opportunities out there, and

  201. that the church is tempted to consistently slide into doing

  202. this. OK, we don't want to be

  203. self-centered. We want to be other centered.

  204. We want, you know, that's a mantra that is recognizable in

  205. this world. We don't want to be

  206. self-centered. We want to be other centered.

  207. We want to focus our lives out towards the other people,

  208. etcetera, etcetera. And how easy it would be to

  209. become a church that is other centered.

  210. Goodness me. Don't we want to be focused on

  211. other people? Of course we do.

  212. Don't we want to pour our hearts and lives in the ministry, the

  213. love of God that He is blessed with us into other people's

  214. lives and into the relationships we have with other people?

  215. Of course we do. Any sense that that is not a

  216. mark of heaven, church is to our shame and detriment.

  217. But we can't be other centered. That's not what the church is

  218. built to be. The church is built to be Christ

  219. centered and Christ centered alone.

  220. Now you can pick this up a little bit in the text in which

  221. we read the text that point to the source of all that we have

  222. is Jesus Christ. The motivation that all we have

  223. is Jesus Christ and the hope that we have is Jesus Christ.

  224. The source of a Christ centered church is going to be Jesus

  225. Christ. The motivation of a Christ

  226. centered church is going to be Jesus Christ, and the hope of a

  227. Christ centered church is going to be Jesus Christ.

  228. You can see this if you have your text available in

  229. Colossians chapter one. This is when I read it.

  230. I hope you captured some of the majesty.

  231. I stumbled through the reading a little bit, but in in light of

  232. that, I hope that you still captured the majesty.

  233. This is one of those great passages about Jesus.

  234. This is one that really highlights who He is.

  235. Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the first born of

  236. all creation. For by Him all things were

  237. created in heaven and on earth, invisible and invisible.

  238. Whether Thrones or dominions, rollers and authorities, all

  239. things were created through Him and for Him.

  240. He is before all things and in all things hold together.

  241. He is the head of the body, the church, the beginning, the first

  242. born of the dead, that in everything he might be

  243. preeminent. Do you hear that?

  244. That's the passage that should ring that that should capture

  245. every thought in our every sense of our imagination, every goal,

  246. every pursuit in which heaven church is made-up of.

  247. That should capture your heart and your desire as an

  248. individual. What do we want?

  249. We want Jesus Christ to be preeminent.

  250. We want him to be lifted high. We want His Majesty and His

  251. sovereignty and His supremacy held up before the whole world

  252. and in front of our whole lives. We want everything in our lives

  253. to be shaped this way. How so?

  254. This text highlights that He's before all things.

  255. He's in all things. He.

  256. All things exist through him. All things exist by Him.

  257. He's a source of every aspect of what it means for us to have a

  258. Christ centered life. Now it'd be easy for us to sit

  259. there and say this, OK, why do we have such a good worship

  260. team? Well, because we have a great

  261. bass player. That's why we have a great

  262. worship team. Why do we have why are we so

  263. fabulous at the Bible studies and youth ministry work?

  264. Because we've got great volunteers that lead things.

  265. Why is it that our, our local ministry work is so good?

  266. What Look at our facilities. Think about what God has given

  267. to us in the facilities in which we operate in.

  268. You have no idea the money and the manpower that the trustees

  269. pour into in order to maintain this.

  270. It'd be easy for us to identify all those things and every one

  271. of those steps would be wrong because we'd be tempted to put

  272. in the center the work of the trustees or our budget that it

  273. enables us to financially do this most of the time.

  274. If you haven't, by the way, kept track of our finances in the E

  275. newsletter, you should do that. You you should know where we're

  276. at. And so and, and since the Lord's

  277. prodding to assist us in the ministries in which we do it,

  278. it'd be easy to get distracted from the center core of who we

  279. are and to be to place anything else in the center of of the

  280. church's work in Jesus Christ and to identify the power and

  281. the effectiveness. You know what if Jerry wasn't

  282. all that Jerry was, so many things wouldn't happen around

  283. the church if Dan didn't do what Dan did, if we didn't have the

  284. staff of all. That's true.

  285. But all of that risks missing the source of what makes Hebron,

  286. Hebron, which is Jesus Christ and him alone the source of a

  287. Christ centered church. Is Jesus Christ the motivation

  288. of a Christ centered church, Matthew and Jesus.

  289. Jesus says these things. Seek first the Kingdom of God

  290. and his righteousness and all these things will be added to

  291. you. What about all those other balls

  292. in the center of my bubble that are so important to me, that are

  293. so crucial to me? I don't want a single one of

  294. them to drop. What about all the balls in our

  295. church? We don't want a single one of

  296. them to drop. We don't want the elderly in our

  297. church to feel uncared for. We don't want the babies in our

  298. church not to have an effective nursery.

  299. We don't want the youth ministry or the adults, or we don't.

  300. We want everything that we want all those balls to stay in the

  301. air. How do they happen?

  302. Only by keeping our motivation correct.

  303. Do you get some of you who are older might remember the comic

  304. strip Calvin and Hobbes? If you don't remember the comic,

  305. Sir Calvin and Hawes find it. It's fabulous.

  306. But Calvin is a little boy and he has a vivid imagination, and

  307. he imagines that this cardboard box is a transmorgifier, and a

  308. transmorgifier is a machine that turns them into whatever he

  309. wants, and it turns them into an alien or it turns them into a

  310. dinosaur or robot or whatever like that.

  311. I wish that we had a transmorgifier and the trans

  312. morgifire would be every time anything happens in this church

  313. where we ask the question, well, what should we do about this or

  314. how do we feel about this or how do we think about this?

  315. We push it through the trans morgifire and we come out with,

  316. what do Christ do about this? What does Christ think about

  317. this? What does Christ feel about

  318. this? Now the crazy thing is that we

  319. do have a trans morgifire and he's the Holy Spirit because

  320. he's working that way in every individual Christian's life.

  321. By God's grace, he's working that way in our church as well,

  322. so that we have that motivation, the motivation that focuses on

  323. Christ as a center. Christ is the center by

  324. recognizing he's the source of all things.

  325. He's the motivation of all things, and He's the hope of all

  326. things. Listen to how Paul writes in

  327. Galatians chapter 2. I have been crucified with

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  328. Christ. It is no longer I who live, but

  329. Christ who lives in me. All right, now let's be in awe

  330. of that passage in such a way that we don't take it silly.

  331. Paul's alive. Paul is alive, but what he's

  332. saying is that his hope, his expectations, his desires,

  333. everything about him, the center of his world, the center of his

  334. bubble is so clearly the crucified Jesus Christ in his

  335. grace, in his love, in his sacrifice, in His Holiness, in

  336. his righteousness, that the center of Paul's life is so

  337. completely and totally Jesus Christ that when you look at hit

  338. the bubble, the ball that is Paul himself is small and

  339. disappearing so that the Lord Jesus Christ can reign in the

  340. center of his bubble more and more completely.

  341. That's what we need for heaven church.

  342. Heaven church desires not just to be all of these things, but

  343. to fulfill all these things. We need the finances to be able

  344. to be faithful to the ministry God's called us to, but our hope

  345. is not. My hope is not in that you will

  346. open your wallets, but go ahead and do so.

  347. My hope is not that you will volunteer for the for the

  348. ministries, but please go and do so.

  349. My hope is not that you will catch a global vision of the

  350. Jesus Christ and that every single day you'll be driven to

  351. your knees to pray for the church that is suffering

  352. throughout the world, but please do so.

  353. My hope and prayer is for Jesus Christ to be the center of

  354. Hebron Church and everything that happens here so that you

  355. will automatically and always be driven exactly to that kind of a

  356. state place where all the balls within the sphere of Hebron

  357. Church are in order and functional as the center of the

  358. church balances and juggles them all.

  359. So what does it mean for us to be a Christ centered church?

  360. Well, one thing it means is that don't ever take Jesus Christ for

  361. granted. Now, I say that to you guys, but

  362. I'm saying that as a challenge for you, for the leadership of

  363. this church, if you ever hear us.

  364. If you ever hear me talking about things where it's not

  365. clear that it arises from the centrality of Jesus Christ,

  366. you've got to call me on it. I guarantee you it's not because

  367. I've forgotten Jesus or I no longer love him.

  368. But what happens is that I'll take him for granted.

  369. This church could take him for granted because he's been such,

  370. so good to us. He has blessed us in so many

  371. ways. It would be easy to take him for

  372. granted. Please don't let us do that.

  373. Please don't ever let ever let Jesus Christ become a means to

  374. an end. Well, we need a great strong

  375. youth ministry. Therefore, we're going to hang

  376. on to Jesus Christ. No, we hang on to Jesus Christ

  377. because he's the center. Now, out of that, we trust that

  378. he will bring us as the source, as a motivation, as a hope.

  379. He will bring us a strong youth ministry of vibrant 70s ministry

  380. and effective local outreach and wonderful facilities that we

  381. have going on. The good effective staff.

  382. We trust all those things because we trust in the

  383. centrality of Jesus Christ. But if heaven is going to be a

  384. Christ centered church, I need you to be a Christ centered

  385. follower. You need me to be a Christ

  386. centered follower, which means not in just some vague, distant

  387. behind the scenes implicit way, but incredibly explicitly in

  388. your life. Why do you know that a

  389. self-centered person is self-centered?

  390. Because they show it all the time.

  391. What do I need from you? What do you need from me?

  392. You need me to be showing you all the time that Jesus Christ

  393. is the center of my life. I need to see from you all the

  394. time that Jesus Christ is the center of your life.

  395. How does that happen? By our embracing Jesus Christ as

  396. the source of all we have and all we do.

  397. By making sure that Jesus Christ is the motivation for all we

  398. have and for all we do, and that Jesus Christ is the hope that we

  399. hold onto for all we have and then for all we do.

  400. And if there's anybody here that tries to live that way and

  401. consistently bumps up against their own inability because of

  402. our sinfulness, because of our self centeredness, because of

  403. our struggles, let me encourage you that we have an advocate on

  404. our side who is wanting to work that very life in your heart,

  405. placing Jesus Christ on the throne, and that's Christ

  406. himself, our Lord. Let's go to him in prayer.

  407. Jesus, we are thankful for the blessings that you pour out into

  408. our hearts. We are thankful that you are

  409. indeed the center of everything that happens here at Hebron.

  410. We know that to be true, Lord. We want to manifest that more

  411. clearly. We want to make that evident to
