  1. The Holy. Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

  2. according to John. Now, before the feast of the

  3. Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart out

  4. of this world to the Father, having loved His own, where in

  5. the world he loved them to the end, during supper, when the

  6. devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot,

  7. Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father

  8. had given all things into his hand and that He had come from

  9. God and was going back to God, rose from supper.

  10. He laid aside his outer garments and taking the tower, tied it

  11. around his waist. Then he poured water into a

  12. basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them

  13. with a towel that was wrapped around him.

  14. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, do you wash my

  15. feet? Jesus answered him, What I am

  16. doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will

  17. understand. Peter said to him, You shall

  18. never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I do not

  19. wash you, you have no share with me.

  20. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my

  21. hands and my head. Jesus said to him, The one who

  22. has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet, but is

  23. completely clean. But you are clean, but not

  24. everyone of you, for he knew who was to betray him.

  25. That was why he said, not all of you are clean.

  26. When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments

  27. and resumed his place, he said to them, Do you understand why I

  28. have done to you? You call me teacher and Lord,

  29. and you are right, for I am. If I then your Lord and Teacher

  30. have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's

  31. feet. I For I have given you an

  32. example that you also should do, just as I have done to you the

  33. gospel of the Lord. Good evening Emmanuel.

  34. Anglican shirt Actually, I have a hearing problem, so I couldn't

  35. hear from the backside. Good evening, Emmanuel Anglican

  36. Church. That's wonderful.

  37. You know, in Pakistan we use that.

  38. So when I want to wake up the people and we ask them again and

  39. again, I can't. I couldn't hear you.

  40. I bring you warm greeting in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

  41. for my family and my church in Pakistan.

  42. I stand before you today with a grateful heart thanking our

  43. Almighty God who has called me into His service, the one who

  44. leads us in every place and spread the fragrance of His

  45. knowledge through US, whether he's in Pakistan or in the

  46. United States. It is truly love doing that.

  47. So we are gathered here today. I want to sincerely thankful

  48. first Father Aaron who give me an opportunity to preach here

  49. with the beautiful people. You know, Father Aaron is a very

  50. faithful and humble servant of God who continually encouraged

  51. and supports me. I also pray that the vision God

  52. has placed in his heart for Emmanuel Church, it will

  53. flourish and grow and bear much fruit for His glory.

  54. I had a testimony, you know, from very first day when I came

  55. here, I visited many churches, but my spirit did not take

  56. peace. So when I came here, I feel like

  57. at home and especially thanks to Father Brian and my brother,

  58. Father Kamran, who connected me to this beautiful family of

  59. faith. I have been truly blessed by

  60. your worship, especially for the choir, musicians, the

  61. administrations and the ushers. So, you know, I learn a lot of

  62. things from the ushers or from the administration.

  63. So I will do a practice in my church and you know that.

  64. So your service is not your work.

  65. I'm talking to ushers. It is a worship.

  66. It is not your service. It is not your work.

  67. It is a worship. And you did it wonderfully.

  68. And I also thank you. Father Samuel is my brother, so

  69. every time when he meets me, he has a smile and he gave me honor

  70. and he gave me encouragement. So thank you for the Samuel, for

  71. your love and your encouragement.

  72. And now we turn to God's Word. I pray that the same Lord who

  73. brought us together will speak to our hearts and transform our

  74. lives. Let's join in prayer, gracious

  75. and loving God, on this sunny night as we remember the

  76. humility and love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  77. Open our hearts to receive. Your Word cleans us, oh Lord,

  78. not only outwardly but inwardly. Teach us what it means to love

  79. as Christ loved, to serve as he served, and to humble ourselves

  80. as he humbled Himself. May the word of my mouth and the

  81. meditation of our hearts be placing in your sight, O Lord

  82. our Rock, our Redeemer. Amen.

  83. Tonight, on Monday, Thursday, we enter into one of the most

  84. intimate and powerful moment in the life of Jesus Christ.

  85. This is the night before the cross, the night of Last Supper,

  86. the night of betrayal, and this is the night of denial, and this

  87. is the night of deep love. The word Monday comes from Latin

  88. word mandatum. Mandatum means commandment.

  89. It refers to new commandment. Jesus gives a letter in this

  90. chapter, and the commandment is love one another as I loved you.

  91. But before Jesus speaks that commandment, he shows it.

  92. He gets down his knees. He takes a towel.

  93. He washes feet. And this is where we must pass.

  94. Because for many of us of here in the United States, this act

  95. can be unfamiliar, even uncomfortable.

  96. Or we don't live in a culture where washing someone's feet is

  97. normal. It may seem symbolic, distant or

  98. even strange, but in Jesus time it was nothing but symbolic.

  99. In 1st century in Judea, people walk everywhere.

  100. Roads are dusty, unpaved streets unsanitary.

  101. Sandals were the common footwear.

  102. By the time someone arrived in the home, their feet would be

  103. covered with the dust, mud and sometime worse.

  104. So foot washing was a necessary act of hospitality, but it was

  105. always the work of lowest servant.

  106. In fact, in Jewish tradition, a Jewish slave could not be

  107. required to wash feet. It was considered too degrading.

  108. Only Gentile slaves servant they perform this act.

  109. I just want to ask you, just imagine yourself, we all are in

  110. the upper room where Jesus celebrate Last Supper with his

  111. disciples. Just imagine that.

  112. Disciples called Jesus teacher. Jesus called disciples Rabbi

  113. Disciples called Jesus Master. Could you imagine that Rabbi

  114. Master who is creator of heaven and earth, who is the only

  115. begotten Son of God, who is the divine Son of God?

  116. He kneels down and creator of the heaven on earth washes the

  117. feet of His creation. Divinity kneels to humanity card

  118. kneels down and wash the feet of a human being.

  119. I must say that what an act of love you never see in your life.

  120. The passages began with the profound theological depth Jesus

  121. when we read Gospel John chapter 13 verse one to three, Jesus

    John 13 chapter mention

  122. know that is our had come having loved his own, He loved them to

  123. the end. And again, Jesus knowing that

  124. the Father had given all things into his hands.

  125. This is crucial. Jesus is not acting out of

  126. security. He is not trying to prove

  127. himself. He is not confused about his

  128. identity. He knows exactly who he is.

  129. He knows he came from God. He knows he is coming to God.

  130. He knows all authority in his hands.

  131. In our world where we live, people often do this kind of

  132. things to get authority, to get status.

  133. But Jesus never do that because he already has authority.

  134. He already has a status. He didn't do this to gain us

  135. status or gain of fame. He already has a status.

  136. He already knows that who he is or when we read was four to

  137. five. It is written that he rose from

  138. support take of his government, took a towel, poured water into

  139. a basin and began to wash the disciples feet.

  140. Every moment here is intentional.

  141. It is written that he rise just as he will rise again.

  142. He lays aside his auto garment to laying aside His auto garment

  143. is a picture of laying aside his glory.

  144. He poured a water into basin, a sign of cleansing.

  145. He wrap himself with a towel taking the form of a servant.

  146. Jesus take off his outer garments.

  147. As I mentioned that taking off his garments is mean to laying

  148. aside his glory. Or when we read through the

  149. Bible in Jesus like there is 2 times Jesus garments took off.

  150. First time he take off his garment by himself.

  151. On this night in the upper room before foot washing his

  152. disciples, he take off his garments himself.

  153. And second time before going to cross Roman soldiers take off

  154. his garments. First time when he take off his

  155. garment by himself, He cleans the foot of his disciples, and

  156. second time when the Roman soldiers take off his garment,

  157. he cleans. He wash our sins, He wash our

  158. lives and he wash our sins. This is not just an act of

  159. service, it is a living parable of gospel.

  160. Just as he Stoops to wash their feet, he will soon stop to the

  161. cross to cleanse their souls. And when Jesus came through

  162. Simon Peter, Peter is shocked. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  163. Peter understands the problem. This is upside on This is not

  164. how things are supposed to work. And then he refuses.

  165. He said you shall never wash my feet, But Jesus responds, if I

  166. do not wash you, you have no share with me.

  167. Here the meaning stiffens. This is no longer just about

  168. physical washing. This is about spiritual crazy.

  169. Peter must learn what we must all learn.

  170. We cannot come to Jesus our own terms.

  171. We must allow Jesus to serve us. We must allow him to cleanse us.

  172. Salvation is not something to achieve.

  173. It is something to receive. On salvation we cannot received

  174. by our own terms. Peter swings to other extreme.

  175. He said Lord not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

  176. But Jesus clarifies the one who has bath does not need to wash

  177. except for his feet. This speak of two realities.

  178. Listen carefully. 1 is the full cleansing and second one is the

  179. ongoing cleansing. Full cleansing means salvation.

  180. Ongoing cleansing means daily forgiveness.

  181. In theological terms for a believers, we use a term there

  182. is a three steps in a believer's life. 1st is justification,

  183. second is sanctification and third one is glorification.

  184. When you accept Jesus as your Savior, as your Lord, you are

  185. justified, you get the salvation or when you are justified, you

  186. go through sanctification, ongoing cleansing and after that

  187. you will go in the glorification here Jesus talk to Peter, you

  188. got a salvation, you are sanctified.

  189. You are no need of salvation. You are just need daily

  190. cleansing. You are just need ongoing

  191. cleansing. You just need a sanctification.

  192. Those who belong to Christ are already clean, but we still need

  193. daily cleansing because we walk through in the broken world.

  194. We need daily forgiveness. We need daily cleansing in our

  195. lives. After washing their feet, Jesus

  196. asked. Do you understand what I have

  197. done to you? Then he says you call me teacher

  198. and Lord, and you are right. If I, your Lord and Teacher,

  199. have wash your feet, you also ought to wash one another's

  200. feet. This is the heart of one day

  201. Thursday. This is the mandatum or this is

  202. the commandment. I have given you an example that

  203. you also should do just I have done to you.

  204. So tonight, what is meaning for us washing feet?

  205. So what does this mean for us? Especially in a culture where

  206. foot washing is uncommon, we must have the literal act to the

  207. theological truth foot washing means.

  208. Lowering ourselves for the sake of others.

  209. In a culture that values status, recognition and power, Jesus

  210. calls us to something radically different.

  211. To serve without being seen, to love without being placed, to

  212. give without expecting return. And the second thing is self

  213. giving love. This act is preview of the

  214. cross. Jesus does not just teach love,

  215. He embodies it. Foot washing is love that moves

  216. towards other even when it costs something.

  217. It is love that serves the undeserving.

  218. If you remember that Jesus, wash the feet of Judah who will

  219. betray Jesus wash the feet of Peter who will deny.

  220. This is self giving love even to those who are not able to show

  221. you love with them. And the third thing, third thing

  222. is that it is are receiving before giving.

  223. Before we can wash other's feet, we must allow Christ to wash

  224. ours. This is often the hardest part.

  225. We prefer to be strong, independent and self-sufficient.

  226. But the gospel begins with surrender.

  227. We must admit that I need to be cleansed.

  228. I cannot save myself and the four and most important thing.

  229. What is mean of foot washing? Jesus gave us a new definition

  230. of greatness. Please listen this sentence very

  231. carefully and it is my hardest desire you all to practice this

  232. sentence in your life. What a greatness in the Kingdom

  233. of God. Greatness is not measured by how

  234. many serve you. Greatness is not measured by how

  235. many serve you, but by how many you serve.

  236. Jesus redefined leadership. The greatest is the servant.

  237. The Lord becomes the slave. Even they were may not literally

  238. wash feet regularly. The principle is deeply

  239. relevant. Foot washing today may look like

  240. serving someone who cannot repay you for giving, someone who has

  241. wronged you, caring for the overlooked and forgotten,

  242. choosing humility over pride in relationships or doing unseen,

  243. unnoticed act of love. Tonight I want to encourage you.

  244. When you start to love one another, when you start to care

  245. others, you might face resistance.

  246. Devil stops you. If you read this passage

  247. carefully, actually in the upper room there is a silent war, and

  248. the silent war is against the Jesus and Devil.

  249. It is written that devil has already put in the heart of

  250. Judah to betray him and Jesus knows that Judah will betray me.

  251. Devil is already put in his heart and you know that devil is

  252. doing his work and Jesus is doing his work.

  253. The betrayal of you that did not stop Jesus to clean or to wash

  254. his feet. I give you a challenge.

  255. When you doing a good work, when you doing the love to others,

  256. might be you face denial, might be you face resistance, might be

  257. you face oppose. Devil's schemes and devil's plan

  258. will never stop Jesus. And when you have believed like

  259. this, so devil's schemes and plans will never stop you.

  260. There are lot of people in the world.

  261. I am from Pakistan, so I talk about my country.

  262. I'm I talk about my diocese. So if I could say that my

  263. diocese is a persecuted ISIS, it is not wrong.

  264. You can find it on the Internet. In the last couple of years

  265. there are many persecution incidents happen.

  266. In my diocese, there are many churches were burned by the

  267. Muslim extremists. A lot of houses burnt to fire,

  268. people lose their belongings. Likewise in Africa there are lot

  269. of churches, lot of communities who really deserve to wash their

  270. feeds. How we can wash their feeds?

  271. We can pray for them, we can care for them and we can love to

  272. them. Here in this message, the

  273. question is not will you wash feet?

  274. The question is, will you live a life shaped by the tower?

  275. On the Soly night we stand in that upper room, we see the

  276. bastard, we saw the towel, and we see the Lord of Glory

  277. kneeling before His disciples. As we hear Him say, as I have

  278. done for you, so you must do for one another.

  279. This is not just an example to admire, it is a life to embody,

  280. because the one who washed feet is the same one who went to the

  281. cross and the same one who calls us to follow Him.

  282. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  283. Amen. Let's pray together.

  284. Lord Jesus Christ, you who knelt to wash the feet of your

  285. disciples, wash us tonight with your grace.

  286. Cleans our heart from pride, our lives from selfishness, and our

  287. hands for service. Teach us to love as you have

  288. loved, to serve as you have served, and to work in humility

  289. all our days. In your holy name we pray.

  290. Amen.
