  1. let us

  2. pray Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have

  3. mercy on us sinners Proclaim to us your

  4. gospel that is the power of God for

  5. salvation to everyone who believes and

  6. help our unbelief help us to have faith

  7. that moves mountains to have faith that

  8. receives and walks in your love we ask

  9. through Christ amen

  10. please be

  11. seated I'm going to walk through the

  12. gospel passage today from Mark

    Mark 9:14

  13. 9:14 I encourage you to turn in your

  14. Bibles or you can use your phone um but

  15. this passage really begins

  16. previously in the the chapter of Mark

  17. it's also in Matthew and Luke's gospels

  18. begins with what we call the

  19. Transfiguration where Jesus takes with

  20. him James Peter and John and he climbs a

  21. a high mountain and Luke tells us that

  22. he goes up the mountain to pray and

  23. while he prays the three disciples with

  24. him fall asleep and as Jesus is praying

  25. the glory of Heaven surrounds him like a

  26. cloud like a mist and in that cloud he

  27. begins to have a conversation with two

  28. saints that have gone to be with the

  29. Lord Moses and Elijah and then the

  30. disciples wake up and they see the glory

  31. of God they see Jesus talking with two

  32. Heroes of their faith Moses and Elijah

  33. and Luke tells us that they're speaking

  34. to Jesus about his upcoming departure or

  35. his Exodus that is his death in

  36. Jerusalem and at that time as the

  37. disciples see him they see him

  38. transfigured filled and emanating a

  39. glory like one they have never seen

  40. before white like lightning like nothing

  41. in the world world and they're in awe

  42. they fall down and they hear the voice

  43. from Heaven of God speaking of Jesus

  44. saying this is my son my beloved listen

  45. to

  46. him and then all the

  47. glory this the lights they disappear and

  48. it's just them and Jesus and as they

  49. make their way down the mountain the

  50. Jesus tell Jesus tells them again that

  51. the son of man that himself will go to

  52. jerus Jem that he will suffer that he

  53. will die and on the third day he will be

  54. raised to

  55. life and as they come down the mountain

  56. they come into the scene that was read

  57. that begins in verse 14 they came to

  58. their disciples that were left there in

  59. an argument with some of the scribes the

  60. teachers of the law and while they're

  61. arguing there's a crowd about them and

  62. in the midst of that crowd is one of the

  63. most desperate people in the gospel in

  64. the Bible perhaps a father of a young

  65. son a young man who from his early days

  66. has been tormented by a demon that

  67. convulses him that we find out tries to

  68. destroy him by throwing him into fire

  69. into

  70. water a terrible terrifying experience

  71. you can imagine how that father has

  72. lived watching that happened to his son

  73. and he has brought him to the disciples

  74. there to have that demon cast out and

  75. the gospels emphasize that this is a

  76. demon it's not a case of a disease of

  77. epilepsy this is a demon that has

  78. possessed the boy from his early

  79. childhood and so as we begin in verse

  80. 14 when they came to the disciples they

  81. saw a crowd about them and the scribes

  82. arguing with

  83. them and you can imagine such a scene

  84. we've probably been in the midst of it

  85. it certainly is something that happens

  86. too often in this world people arguing

  87. people fighting people pointing

  88. fingers Jesus's disciples being right in

  89. the midst of it and immediately all the

  90. crowd when they saw Jesus were greatly

  91. amazed and ran up to him and greeted him

  92. and it's possible that as Jesus came

  93. down that mountain he still emanated

  94. some of that glory and light not unlike

  95. Moses did when Moses came down the

  96. mountain from the glory of God and and

  97. had to wear a veil but it might be more

  98. likely that Jesus just carried the

  99. authority of Heaven he carried the

  100. authority of a man who had been with God

  101. a man who is God he carried the

  102. Assurance the confidence of a man who

  103. had been in prayer who had heard from

  104. God and so they're amazed at him they

  105. see Jesus as something other than what

  106. they see in this world and they're

  107. amazed and they run up to him and they

  108. greet him and Jesus asked nothing gets

  109. by Jesus he saw what they were doing

  110. what are you arguing about with them he

  111. asked his

  112. disciples in other words why are you

  113. spending your time and your energy

  114. arguing with

  115. people why are you getting involved in

  116. these conflicts these frustrations of

  117. the World by

  118. arguing instead of by seeking the Lord

  119. and In Prayer by practicing what he had

  120. taught them they are engaged in this

  121. vitriol with one another and when that

  122. happens they lose sight of the Kingdom

  123. of Heaven they lose sight of the need

  124. that they have been empowered to

  125. address as before in the gospels when

  126. Jesus gave them authority to go out

  127. preach the gospel cast out demons they

  128. even boasted about their ability to cast

  129. out demons but here they're just arguing

  130. they're involved

  131. in the conflicts of the world which

  132. likely are inspired by demons themselves

  133. who manipulate their own sinful nature

  134. in this Fallen World as Father Brian

  135. preached about last week the the

  136. susceptibility that we have to our own

  137. flesh the world and the

  138. devil and then they hear from the man

  139. the father teacher I brought my son to

  140. you for he had a spirit that makes him

  141. mute and whenever it seizes him it

  142. throws him down and he Foams and grinds

  143. his teeth and becomes rigid so I asked

  144. your disciples to cast it out and they

  145. were not

  146. able when when his disciples engage with

  147. the world like the world they are not

  148. able to do the works of the Kingdom

  149. they're not able to proclaim the gospel

  150. they're not able to exercise the gifts

  151. and Powers they've been given through

  152. the Holy Spirit and the same is true for

  153. us if you're like me at all you've found

  154. yourself way too often anxious fretting

  155. even angry at the things of the world

  156. and having arguments in your mind or

  157. being overcome with an anxiety about

  158. what's going to happen what's not going

  159. to happen in the world whether about

  160. things near or far and when we become

  161. consumed like that when I become

  162. consumed like that eventually by God's

  163. grace it may lead to prayer but too

  164. often it becomes concerned about myself

  165. and my agenda and I'm unproductive for

  166. the kingdom and that's what we see

  167. happening here this man had Faith to

  168. bring his son to the disciples and ask

  169. them to cast it out but the

  170. disciples maybe trying too much in their

  171. own power were impotent to cast out this

  172. demon and when Jesus comes on the scene

  173. we see the manifestations of evil in the

  174. darkness mocking and scoffing at the

  175. impotence of those who claim the name of

  176. Jesus creating conflict continue in his

  177. Terror in possessing the

  178. son and that's what evil does a couple

  179. weeks ago we had as our reading

  180. Ephesians 610 through2 that or 10-20

  181. that Paul tells us we don't wrestle

  182. against flesh and blood but that's

  183. exactly what the disciples were doing

  184. all this crowd was wrestling against

  185. each other but we wrestle against the

  186. spiritual forces of evil the rulers the

  187. authorities the cosmic powers of this

  188. present evil age and when we're bound up

  189. in the world and wrestling against flesh

  190. and blood we can't deal with them we

  191. can't continue our prayers to God and so

  192. when Jesus hears

  193. this he answered them all oh faithless

  194. generation how long am I to be with you

  195. how long am I to bear with you bring him

  196. to me this is quite a severe statement

  197. by

  198. Jesus Oh faithless generation how long

  199. am I to be with you Jesus being fully

  200. God is also fully man and he expresses I

  201. think his frustration here and maybe his

  202. Al also his lament at the dichotomy

  203. between what he experienced on the

  204. Mountaintop a true Mountaintop

  205. experience that he had with the glory of

  206. his father in communion with his

  207. father and then he comes down into this

  208. valley of

  209. darkness and that peace That Glory that

  210. he had experienced is all disrupted by

  211. this darkness that he walks

  212. into but of course Jesus does walk into

  213. it because that is why he came to

  214. destroy the work of the devil and so he

  215. says bring the boy to me and they

  216. brought the boy tomb and when the spirit

  217. saw him immediately he convulsed the boy

  218. and he fell on the ground and rolled

  219. about foaming at the mouth the devil is

  220. not going to give up his grasp on things

  221. easily or willingly this demon

  222. knows that Jesus is the son of God who

  223. has the power and authority to cast him

  224. out but he is going to try even to

  225. intimidate the Son of God even to

  226. manifest in such a way as to cause

  227. Terror in Jesus he definitely follows in

  228. the way of his master who prows around

  229. like a roaring lion seeking someone to

  230. Devour the devil tries to create a

  231. shadow of death and Terror over us and

  232. before us that he will disrupt our faith

  233. that he will get us off kilter that he

  234. will try to make himself so intimidating

  235. that we think there's nothing that can

  236. be

  237. done except to be anxious to worry to

  238. try to

  239. hide but this demon has come before the

  240. Son of

  241. God through whom all things including it

  242. were made Jesus has absolute and perfect

  243. faith and certainty in the power of God

  244. working through him to cast out this

  245. demon and so he is not intimidated he is

  246. not moved by what it does just like he's

  247. not moved by what any of the demons in

  248. the gospel say to

  249. him he asked the father how long has

  250. this been happening to him and he said

  251. from childhood and it has often cast him

  252. into the fire and into water to destroy

  253. him this is what the enemy does this is

  254. what evil does this is what our own

  255. sinful nature does brings about

  256. destruction

  257. that is the working of evil in this

  258. world and that the devil and his demons

  259. have not given up Jesus referred to him

  260. as the ruler of the world and Jesus did

  261. come to cast him out of all things and

  262. one day he will be cast out of all

  263. creation and existence but for now those

  264. evil spirits are still in the world

  265. trying to bring about

  266. destruction through their powers through

  267. their world and through the manipulation

  268. of our own sinful nature that must die

  269. and you can think just what we see in

  270. the world what some of you have

  271. experienced how this happens from

  272. conception in the womb to the end of

  273. life naturally the devil seeks

  274. destruction murder drugs abuse all sorts

  275. of conflict and war and

  276. violence

  277. everything he's trying to bring about

  278. destruction

  279. in for this child since his childhood

  280. the demon has been trying to cast him

  281. into fire and water to destroy him

  282. imagine the heartache of his father

  283. imagine the terror that that child has

  284. experienced but they have found

  285. themselves at the feet of Jesus who is

  286. the one sent from heaven to destroy this

  287. very work that this demon has brought

  288. about and as Jesus sees the crowd coming

  289. about him the man asks Jesus if you can

  290. do anything have compassion on us and

  291. help

  292. us if you can do anything have

  293. compassion on us and help

  294. us Jesus said to him if you can all

  295. things are possible for one who

  296. believes one who believes has just come

  297. down from the mountain into the darkness

  298. of this Valley one who exudes and

  299. overflows with compassion has come to

  300. this man and his son the same one who

  301. has come into the world because of

  302. compassion who has come into the world

  303. with power who has come into our lives

  304. with compassion with power to do all

  305. things according to God's will his

  306. goodness and his love he has come into

  307. our lives Jesus is one who believes that

  308. all things are possible we will see when

  309. he's in the Garden of

  310. Gethsemane and he prays to the father

  311. ABA father all things are possible for

  312. you take this cup from me yet not what I

  313. will but what you will be done Jesus is

  314. one who believes and has an assurance

  315. that all things are possible for God he

  316. has the compassion to exercise that

  317. power for goodness and Grace and

  318. love and he is one who is obedient to

  319. God and so he says all things are

  320. possible for one who believes and the

  321. father in his desperation cried out and

  322. said I believe help my

  323. unbelief he believes enough he's

  324. demonstrated that by bringing his child

  325. to the disciples and to Jesus but he

  326. still needs God's mercy and Grace

  327. because his faith is not perfect it's

  328. not complete and so it's not unlike our

  329. prayer Lord have mercy on me I believe

  330. Lord but have mercy on me and help my

  331. unbelief

  332. and

  333. then Jesus says to the unclean Spirit he

  334. rebukes it and says you mute deaf spirit

  335. I command you come out of him and never

  336. enter him again and there's no way that

  337. this spirit is going to disobey the word

  338. of God the word that created all things

  339. yet he's still not going to give up

  340. without in trying to intimidate trying

  341. to cause Terror

  342. maybe give one last hold

  343. out maybe Jesus will give

  344. up and so when Jesus commands a demon

  345. out the demon convulses the boy

  346. terribly but then it came out and the

  347. boy was like a corpse so that most say

  348. yes Jesus did it

  349. no even after Jesus casts out the demons

  350. there is so much doubt and unbelief that

  351. the crowd says he's dead

  352. man what a statement of unbelief this is

  353. why Jesus is frustrated and he says oh

  354. faithless generation how long am I going

  355. to be with you to give you reasons to

  356. believe in

  357. God the boy's dead they say but Jesus

  358. reaches down and lifts him up and

  359. restores him to the

  360. father you might feel hopeless like your

  361. dream are dead like you're dead to God

  362. you're dead to

  363. others but it's not

  364. true there is one who stands before you

  365. to stoop down and to lift you up to

  366. restore you to his father in Heaven he

  367. comes as a minister of reconciliation to

  368. reconcile us to God and to the kingdom

  369. of

  370. heaven this boy is not dead we are not

  371. dead no matter what is happened to us or

  372. what we've done we are not dead to God

  373. as long as we can have faith in Jesus

  374. and the one who has

  375. come there is nobody who is so low there

  376. is nobody who's so high in this

  377. world that Jesus does not stoop down to

  378. lift them up to restore them to the

  379. father to restore him or her to the

  380. goodness of God there's no one who has

  381. too little value in the eyes of the

  382. world and there's no one who has

  383. everything in the eyes of the world that

  384. is outside the reach of Jesus to lift

  385. him or her up set them on their feet and

  386. restore them to the heavenly father this

  387. is why Jesus has come into the

  388. world to lift us back up to God to lift

  389. us up out of the darkness and bring us

  390. into his light just as he does this

  391. young boy as he restores him to the

  392. father the disciples later asked Jesus

  393. those who had been left in the valley

  394. why couldn't we do it and he says this

  395. kind cannot be driven out by anything

  396. but prayer and almost every Bible I read

  397. has a footnote that says some

  398. manuscripts and

  399. fasting and I think that it's probably

  400. safe to include an

  401. fasting as part of our spiritual

  402. disciplines it was part of Jesus's

  403. spiritual disciplines

  404. Jesus is one who has prayed who fasted

  405. on our behalf Jesus is the one who has

  406. prayed and fasted so that we could be

  407. delivered from demons he has fulfilled

  408. this on our

  409. behalf the passage from Isaiah 50 is one

  410. that speaks of the suffering servant the

  411. obedient servant of God who is the

  412. Messiah the prophecies that Jesus

  413. fulfilled and I I want to revisit it in

  414. Isaiah

  415. 50 beginning in verse

  416. 4 the Lord God has given me the tongue

  417. of those who are taught that I may know

  418. how to sustain with the word him who is

  419. Weary mour by morning he awakens he

  420. awakens my ear to hear as those who are

  421. taught the Lord God has opened my ear

  422. and I was not rebellious I turn not

  423. backward I gave my back to those who

  424. strike my cheeks to those who pull out

  425. out the beard I hid not my face from

  426. disgrace and

  427. spitting but the Lord God helps me

  428. therefore I've not been disgraced

  429. therefore I've set my face like flint

  430. and I know that I shall not be put to

  431. shame he who vindicates me is near who

  432. will contend with me let us Stand

  433. Together who is my adversary let him

  434. come near to me behold the Lord God

  435. helps me who will declare me guilty

  436. behold all of them will wear out like a

  437. garment the moth will eat them up this

  438. is what Jesus has fulfilled on our

  439. behalf as fully God as fully man in the

  440. world he gave his ear to the

  441. Lord that the Lord could direct him and

  442. instruct him day by day that the Lord

  443. could give him and he would proclaim the

  444. word that sustains the

  445. weary but not only that in obedience he

  446. turned his back to those who struck him

  447. to those who pulled pull out the beard

  448. he gave himself over to death in

  449. obedience believing that the Lord God

  450. would help him that he would not be

  451. abandoned but that he would be

  452. Vindicated which he was in the

  453. resurrection Jesus was obedient to God

  454. as a faithful servant and died and rose

  455. again on our behalf so that we can call

  456. upon him in faith and assurance that he

  457. will come to lift us up that he will

  458. come to to rescue us from the powers of

  459. evil and the Darkness and bring us into

  460. his kingdom to bring us into his light

  461. to bring us into the perfect love of the

  462. father that we can live with him so let

  463. us not be consumed or distracted or fret

  464. over the things of the world but when

  465. those things come against us and tempt

  466. us let us look to the Lord in prayer let

  467. us look to him calling upon his name

  468. whether it's a simple prayer like Lord

  469. help me Lord have mercy on me Lord come

  470. to me Lord I believe help my

  471. unbelief Jesus is our champion who

  472. didn't stay on the mountain of Heaven in

  473. God's glory but came down to the

  474. darkness of the valley of this world to

  475. die for us so that we could be made

  476. alive to God and filled with the Holy

  477. Spirit and by God's grace and through

  478. our reception of his gift of faith by

  479. faith and as he has ped out his holy

  480. spirit upon us we also can follow in the

  481. way of

  482. Jesus no longer being afraid no longer

  483. being overcome by

  484. Darkness but we too can submit to God

  485. and as James says in James 4:7 after

    James 4:7

  486. saying that God opposes the proud but

  487. gives grace to the humble we can humble

  488. ourselves to God and submit to God and

  489. as James says and resist the devil that

  490. he would flee from us

  491. we draw near to God and he draws near to

  492. us and therefore as we walk through

  493. Christ and in Christ we too overcome the

  494. evil and those spiritual forces of evil

  495. that we would not wrestle against them

  496. in our own power and get pinned but we

  497. would wrestle against them with the

  498. power of the Holy Spirit and by the name

  499. of Jesus and cast them out so I want to

  500. leave you with this encouragement to

  501. follow in the way of Jesus as his

  502. indicated in Isaiah 50 to make this a

  503. prayer to you what Jesus

  504. fulfilled the Lord God has given me the

  505. tongue of those who are taught that I

  506. may know how to sustain with the word

  507. him who is weary ask the Lord to teach

  508. you to speak to you to give you his word

  509. that sustains the weary and to help you

  510. to share it with others mour by morning

  511. he awakens awakens my ear to hear as

  512. those who are taught pray that God would

  513. speak to you morning by morning or day

  514. by day to awaken you as one who is

  515. taught by a loving father who Delights

  516. in his son and his daughter whether it's

  517. in the morning if that's the best time

  518. for you or whether it's during the day

  519. or at night invite the Lord to speak to

  520. you morning by morning Day by Day

  521. evening by evening to speak to you and

  522. awaken you as one who is taught awaken

  523. your spirit awaken your faith awaken his

  524. spiritual gifts within you awaken his

  525. calling for your

  526. life and humble yourself and submit to

  527. God Like Jesus ask him to help you

  528. submit to him and resist the devil

  529. invite the Lord to draw you near to him

  530. and for him to draw near to

  531. you that even when we walk in the valley

  532. of darkness that seems to be overcome by
