  1. let us

  2. pray Come Holy Spirit speak to our

  3. hearts this morning open our hearts to

  4. you and make us more like Jesus

  5. amen please be

  6. seated while I was growing up in De Mo

  7. Iowa at some point the state of Iowa

  8. introduced a new tax break for movies to

  9. be filmed in Iowa and so we started

  10. having more movies and TV shows and

  11. things filmed there it never got to the

  12. scale of what Georgia is but it was

  13. still pretty exciting to see that kind

  14. of thing happening and one day my

  15. parents got a call from someone who

  16. wanted to use parts of our house for a

  17. movie they were filming and it was a

  18. pretty sweet deal for us because they

  19. paid my parents some amount of money and

  20. they put our family up in a hotel for a

  21. week but the best perk of all of this is

  22. that we had the option of being extras

  23. in the

  24. movie and a lot of you are probably

  25. sitting there wondering what movie this

  26. is it was a small movie that I guarantee

  27. no one in this room has ever heard of

  28. and it was very poorly written you

  29. wouldn't even want to see it if I told

  30. you what the name of it was but I didn't

  31. know any of that at the time and I

  32. thought being an extra in a movie

  33. sounded pretty awesome Not only was I

  34. going to be in a movie but I got to miss

  35. a day of school and I got paid minimum w

  36. wage for my time there it was

  37. great the scene that I was an extra in

  38. was filmed at this soda fountain type of

  39. restaurant and my role was to pick up a

  40. tray of food and then walk with someone

  41. next to me over to the table where we

  42. were sitting at and put the food down

  43. sit down at the table and then something

  44. more interesting would happen you know

  45. after we did that in front of the

  46. camera and they filmed this several

  47. times you know they filmed these short

  48. little scenes over and over again so you

  49. know each time we'd get the food walk

  50. over put it down and then cut and we'd

  51. all go back to where we were at the

  52. start and in between one set of takes

  53. I'm getting ready to walk back and bring

  54. this tray back to the counter and

  55. there's this guy standing in between the

  56. tables in the way of where I need to

  57. walk and he's wearing a leather jacket

  58. and some dirty jeans that are a little

  59. ripped he just seems like he's a local

  60. guy I assume he's probably a friend of

  61. the owner of the restaurant who's just

  62. there checking it out he's excited that

  63. they're filming a movie in his town um

  64. but he wasn't paying attention to what

  65. was going on around him he's standing in

  66. the middle middle of the set here and

  67. he's just kind of looking around

  68. aimlessly and I feel a little frustrated

  69. cuz you know everyone's rushing to their

  70. spots trying to get back into position

  71. to get filmed and I'm trying to listen

  72. to the director telling me to go back

  73. where I need to go and this guy is just

  74. in my way totally unaware of what is

  75. going on and I started thinking to

  76. myself like I'm actually in this movie

  77. this guy is just here to watch what's

  78. happening and here he is getting in my

  79. way so I say to him in a little bit of a

  80. rude tone excuse me and he's like oh oh

  81. sorry and gets out of my way and I move

  82. back we do more

  83. takes but after that day I would later

  84. find out that this guy who was in my way

  85. was the actor Ray Leota who was the star

  86. of the

  87. movie and there was as an extra getting

  88. upset that the star of the movie was in

  89. my

  90. way I think if Ray Leota could have

  91. looked into my head in that moment and

  92. seen what I was thinking he'd probably

  93. feel a little bit like Jesus feels in

  94. Our Gospel reading today with his

  95. disciples so turn with me to Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  96. chapter

  97. 9 Mark chapter

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  98. 9 so at the beginning of chapter nine

  99. Jesus was transfigured up on the

  100. mountain with Peter James and John with

  101. him showing his glory and what is to

  102. come and then after they come down the

  103. mountain as father Craig preached about

  104. last week Jesus and these three

  105. disciples encounter the rest of the

  106. disciples they're there arguing with a

  107. group of scribes and those disciples are

  108. unable to cast a demon out of a young

  109. boy and Jesus steps in and is able to

  110. free the boy from this demonic

  111. oppression and and then after that we

  112. pick up in verse 30 this morning as

  113. Jesus is walking with his disciples and

  114. he teaches them once again about his

  115. coming death he says the son of man is

  116. going to be delivered into the hands of

  117. men and they will kill him and when he

  118. is killed after 3 days he will

  119. rise to all of us it's obvious in

  120. hindsight that Jesus is going to die but

  121. we have to remember that for his

  122. disciples this wasn't the outcome they

  123. expect Ed from his

  124. ministry these men have the various

  125. military and political victories of the

  126. Old Testament in the back of their minds

  127. particularly The Exodus where God

  128. defeated Egypt and rescued his people

  129. from

  130. slavery so it's reasonable to assume

  131. that the Messiah is going to come and

  132. conquer the Roman oppressors who've been

  133. oppressing the Jewish people that's why

  134. just a chapter before this when Jesus

  135. was predicting his death to his

  136. disciples Peter pulls him aside and

  137. rebukes him saying this is not what this

  138. is all about this is not what your

  139. ministry is leading

  140. to but Jesus insists that he is going to

  141. be arrested and killed and then after 3

  142. days he'll rise from the

  143. dead and we're told in verse 32 that his

  144. disciples didn't understand what Jesus

  145. was saying but they were too afraid to

  146. ask him and Mark doesn't tell us exactly

  147. why the discip IES were too afraid to

  148. ask Jesus but I think we can make an

  149. educated guess based on the context

  150. because before this like we said Peter

  151. uh had pulled Jesus aside rebuked him

  152. saying this isn't what the Messiah is

  153. about but Jesus had responded by

  154. rebuking Peter in front of the rest of

  155. the disciples saying get behind me Satan

  156. for you are not setting your mind on the

  157. things of God but on the things of

  158. man now being called Satan is never a

  159. good thing but I think being called

  160. Satan by Jesus is probably even

  161. worse so I'm sure the other 11 disciples

  162. after seeing this happened to Peter uh

  163. are a little hesitant to speak up in

  164. case they might say the wrong thing and

  165. they're also coming off of this

  166. experience in last week's Gospel reading

  167. where they weren't able to cast this

  168. demon out of the young boy and they

  169. needed Jesus to step in and do it so I

  170. think it's fair to speculate that the

  171. disciples might have been feeling a

  172. little self conscious at this point

  173. about their own abilities their own

  174. knowledge but we find out in the

  175. following verses that instead of asking

  176. Jesus what he meant when they didn't

  177. understand it the disciples were instead

  178. arguing with each other about who's the

  179. greatest and it seems like they're

  180. responding to this self-consciousness

  181. this apprehension that they're all

  182. Feeling by instead trying to jockey for

  183. position maybe saying well at least I'm

  184. not as bad as those guys like at least

  185. I'm not Peter the one who got called out

  186. by

  187. Jesus but notice with me here the stark

  188. contrast between Jesus and his

  189. disciples Jesus is describing how he

  190. will give his life and suffer on behalf

  191. of others meanwhile the disciples are

  192. arguing about who's the

  193. greatest no wonder the disciples were

  194. silent when Jesus then asks them when

  195. they arrive what were you all talking

  196. about on the road as we were on our way

  197. here

  198. the disciples are concerned with upward

  199. Mobility status and

  200. honor and Jesus is on the road to the

  201. bottom there's no Honor on the cross

  202. only

  203. humiliation there's no feeling of

  204. greatness on the cross only weakness and

  205. defeat and yet we know that the cross

  206. became the sight of Jes Jesus's ultimate

  207. victory over sin death and the devil

  208. that's why Jesus tells his disciples if

  209. anyone would be first he must be last of

  210. all and servant of

  211. all Christians shouldn't be playing the

  212. games that the world plays for status

  213. and honor in the kingdom of God the way

  214. to become great is to become the

  215. least our reading from James describes

  216. this same dynamic

  217. in chapter 4 James is talking about

  218. quarrels between Believers which is what

  219. we see happening with the disciples as

  220. they're arguing on the road about who's

  221. the

  222. greatest and James says that these

  223. quarrels are caused because your

  224. passions are at War within you you're

  225. not clear about what's most important to

  226. you James goes on to say in verse 4 do

  227. you not know that friendship with the

  228. world is enmity with God therefore

  229. whoever wishes to be a friend of the

  230. world makes himself an enemy of

  231. God what James is describing here is an

  232. idea that's prominent in the writings of

  233. St

  234. Augustine and it's the idea that we all

  235. love many different things I love God I

  236. love my wife I love this church I love

  237. pizza but obviously all of those loves

  238. cannot be equal to one another if I love

  239. pizza more than I love my wife I'm going

  240. to have some serious problems in my

  241. marriage so we need to put all of these

  242. loves in the proper order we all have a

  243. hierarchy of loves and whatever is at

  244. the top whatever we love the most is

  245. going to shape the way that we love all

  246. of these other things and so what James

  247. is saying here is that our love of God

  248. needs to be at the top anything else as

  249. our greatest love will inevitably lead

  250. to sin putting anything else above God

  251. means we're setting ourselves in

  252. opposition to God and His

  253. Commandments we can't say well God is

  254. still number two but this is really

  255. important right now and I'll get back to

  256. God after that our love of God needs to

  257. be at the top of the hierarchy needs to

  258. be the greatest love that orders all the

  259. rest of our

  260. loves otherwise James tells us what

  261. happens uh in verse 16 of chapter 3

  262. where jealousy and selfish ambition

  263. exist there will be disorder in every

  264. vile

  265. practice when our selfish Ambitions

  266. overtake our love of God and our love of

  267. our

  268. neighbor we sin against each other and

  269. against God to get what we want but

  270. James is saying that the problem the

  271. heart of this isn't the actions it's the

  272. desires behind the actions the outward

  273. action emerg from a heart that's set on

  274. obtaining and achieving as much as I can

  275. for myself rather than giving myself

  276. fully to

  277. God that's why it's so important that we

  278. get our desires in order we see this

  279. Illustrated very well in the story of

  280. Cain and Abel in uh Genesis chapter

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  281. 4 after his brother Abel's offering is

  282. accepted by God but Cain's offering is

  283. not Cain gets angry and God tells him

  284. them why are you angry why has your face

  285. Fallen if you do well will you not be

  286. accepted and if you do not do well sin

  287. is crouching at the door its desire is

  288. contrary to you but you must rule over

  289. it in Cain's anger at his brother sin is

  290. crouching at the door ready to overtake

  291. him and Cain has a choice whether to

  292. give into this temptation or to resist

  293. it

  294. unfortunately Cain allows his anger to

  295. grow and he ends up murdering his

  296. brother

  297. Abel but James is teaching us here that

  298. we need to deal with these sinful

  299. desires before they grow and one of the

  300. ways we do this is to think about which

  301. desires are you feeding and indulging on

  302. a daily basis are you feeding your

  303. desire for God by saturating yourself in

  304. biblical truth or are you feed ing

  305. jealousy and selfish

  306. ambition it's easy to do the latter when

  307. our culture is so dominated by selfish

  308. ambition being in an election year we

  309. all know that our politics is full of

  310. selfish

  311. ambition on all sides and our media is

  312. the same way our movies our TV shows the

  313. advertising that's coming at us from

  314. every direction is all about telling us

  315. to indulge what whatever we desire and

  316. to pursue our own

  317. greatness but James tells us that the

  318. opposite of this is humility he writes

  319. in verse 6 God opposes the proud but

  320. gives grace to the humble God opposes

  321. the proud but gives grace to the

  322. humble so how do we grow in

  323. humility I want to return now to Our

  324. Gospel reading because Jesus gives his

  325. disciples the antidote to their

  326. pride Jesus knows that his disciples

  327. were arguing on the road about who's the

  328. greatest but he doesn't just berate them

  329. in that moment and let tell them you

  330. guys all need to be more humble you're

  331. really messing up here instead Jesus

  332. teaches them the way to grow in

  333. humility he begins by telling them if

  334. anyone would be first he must be last of

  335. all and servant of

  336. then jesus takes up a child and puts

  337. this child in the middle of the

  338. disciples presumably to get their

  339. attention or something and then he picks

  340. up the child in his arms and tells his

  341. disciples whoever receives one such

  342. child in my name receives me and whoever

  343. receives me receives not me but him who

  344. sent

  345. me we have to understand that children

  346. in the ancient world were some of the

  347. lowest status people they're weak

  348. they're vulnerable they can be difficult

  349. to deal

  350. with when Jesus tells his disciples that

  351. they should be receiving children in

  352. other words that they should be serving

  353. and honoring

  354. children what he's telling them is go

  355. find the people at the bottom of the

  356. status hierarchy and then put yourself

  357. below

  358. them remember if anyone would be first

  359. he must be last of all and servant of

  360. all Jesus is teaching his disciples that

  361. the antidote to their pride and their

  362. quest for greatness is to serve the weak

  363. the

  364. vulnerable the low status the people who

  365. are difficult to deal

  366. with and this point about children is so

  367. important to Jesus that children are all

  368. over this section of Mark we'll just go

  369. over a few of them so first we have last

  370. week's Gospel reading where Jesus casts

  371. out a demon from a young boy then we

  372. have today's reading where Jesus brings

  373. this child in and tells his disciples

  374. anyone who receives a child in my name

  375. receives me then later in this chapter

  376. Jesus has harsh words for anyone who

  377. would cause a child to sin then in

  378. chapter 10 people start bringing

  379. children to Jesus for Jesus to bless

  380. them and the disciples stop them but

  381. Jesus then rebukes his disciples Les and

  382. tells them let the children come to me

  383. so this idea of serving and honoring and

  384. caring for children is of great

  385. importance to

  386. Jesus this isn't just a little side

  387. tangent where he's telling them like hey

  388. go do your duty of your week down in

  389. children's ministry and then you can

  390. come back up to the real meat of the

  391. faith Jesus is telling his disciples to

  392. serve children because he's teaching

  393. them to be like him him to be last of

  394. all and servant of

  395. all remember before this Jesus has just

  396. reminded his disciples that he's on his

  397. way to the Cross to give his life for

  398. the sake of others and throughout his

  399. ministry on this path to the Cross we

  400. see Jesus constantly serving the weak

  401. the vulnerable the difficult the low

  402. status

  403. people the church should be a place

  404. where children are welcomed and served

  405. and honored and not just literal

  406. children but also anyone who is weak and

  407. vulnerable and low

  408. status and maybe a little difficult to

  409. deal

  410. with I love preaching but one of the

  411. hardest things about preaching for me is

  412. that God is always working his word in

  413. me as he's preparing me to preach it it

  414. feels like every time I preach God is

  415. convicting me of sin and giving me

  416. opportunities to repent and live out

  417. whatever he's preparing me to preach on

  418. and sure enough this week at work I had

  419. to deal with a very difficult

  420. person and for a few days I was able to

  421. just get through the interactions that I

  422. needed to have with this person and just

  423. move on but my frustration was building

  424. as these interactions kept happening and

  425. at some point around the middle of this

  426. week this person started pushing back on

  427. some point that I had already explained

  428. and they were saying that I was wrong

  429. about something I actually knew more of

  430. the information

  431. about and initially I was ready to

  432. respond in anger but I was quickly

  433. convicted and was reminded that I'd be

  434. preaching this week about humbling

  435. ourselves and serving

  436. children and I'm grateful in that moment

  437. that God enabled me to respond gracious

  438. iously to this person it ended up

  439. totally changing the interaction and it

  440. was much easier after

  441. that if you want to follow Jesus in his

  442. way of humility then ask God to open

  443. your eyes to the children around

  444. you ask God to show you opportunities to

  445. humble yourself in Christlike

  446. service but I need to warn you that this

  447. is a dangerous prayer to pray because

  448. you have to be ready for God to to

  449. answer

  450. it and when those opportunities come

  451. none of us in our own strength will be

  452. able to choose the path of humility we

  453. need the Holy Spirit to turn our hearts

  454. from selfish ambition into self-giving

  455. love the self-giving love of Christ who

  456. had everything in his divine nature but

  457. emptied himself to become a human being

  458. and to die on the cross for our sins

  459. in a few minutes we're going to prepare

  460. to receive the Eucharist and one of the

  461. reasons we do this every week is that in

  462. the sacraments we are united with

  463. Christ in the prayer of consecration

  464. Father Brian will pray sanctify us also

  465. that we may worthily receive this holy

  466. sacrament and be made one body with him

  467. that he may dwell in us and we in him

  468. it's only in Union with Christ that we

  469. can offer others his self-giving

  470. love the answer to the world's struggle

  471. for greatness isn't to say I need to try

  472. harder I need to serve more people the

  473. answer is to Humble ourselves before God

  474. to confess our selfishness to allow his

  475. Spirit to make us more like Christ the

  476. one who who is truly servant of

  477. all in the name of the father and the

  478. son and the holy spirit amen
