  1. let us

  2. pray oh Lord how good it is when your

  3. people dwell together as

  4. one in

  5. unity give us Lord the unity that only

  6. you can

  7. give and may my speech and message not

  8. be plausible words of human wisdom but a

  9. demonstration of the spirit and of power

  10. that our faith may not rest in the

  11. wisdom of men but in the power of the

  12. Living God we ask this in the name of

  13. the father and of the son and of the

  14. holy spirit amen you may be

  15. seated today we conclude our series on

  16. the pillars of Christ Church's

  17. Vision over the past few weeks we've

  18. gone over

  19. worship catechesis Mission and now life

  20. together our fourth and final pillar

  21. life together is a contemporary English

  22. rendering of a very important word in

  23. the Greek New Testament the word

  24. coia coia can mean lots of different

  25. things depending on the context it can

  26. mean to share in to participate to

  27. partner with to

  28. Fellowship to commune

  29. communion and belong

  30. coia is the distinctive feature of the

  31. church The Community of Faith the body

  32. of Christ it's one of the things that

  33. makes us different from the world

  34. Dietrick Bon Hofer wrote in his book

  35. life together that the church is the

  36. only human community that exists for the

  37. sake of others for those who are outside

  38. of its walls who are not yet part of the

  39. body indeed our life together is not

  40. just for us it is for those who are not

  41. yet part of us the

  42. communion the coin Andia the life

  43. together that we share in his great work

  44. the city of God St Augustine wrote about

  45. all human communities about what makes a

  46. community and he wrote two things that

  47. all Earthly communities are created by

  48. humans and are united by their shared

  49. loves all of us are part of many

  50. different communities we're all many of

  51. us part of this city Savannah Savannah

  52. was created by humans and we're United

  53. together by our love for this place for

  54. the natural beauty for its history uh

  55. for our culture

  56. here you may also have uh be part of

  57. another Community uh maybe a sports team

  58. uh sports team that did really well

  59. yesterday I will say add

  60. unexpectedly um maybe you belong because

  61. you were part of building that place you

  62. attended that place you love uh the team

  63. what they

  64. represent this country indeed was

  65. founded by humans and we are united by

  66. shared values by things that we all love

  67. life liberty the pursuit of

  68. happiness all human communities are this

  69. way but the church is different the

  70. church is unique the the church was

  71. created by God not by humans the church

  72. is a creature of water and the spirit

  73. humans do not build or grow the church

  74. we are all engrafted into the church by

  75. God's grace it's the only Community

  76. humans did not make and moreover the

  77. church is not United by our mutual love

  78. but United by the love of God the love

  79. that God has for each one of us that is

  80. what has constituted the church John

  81. writes in his first epistle chapter 4 we

  82. love because he first loved

  83. us it's God's love for us that makes it

  84. possible for us to love God and love

  85. neighbor as we just confessed without

  86. God's love we cannot fulfill the

  87. Commandments coia is a good description

  88. of what the life of this community is

  89. the community created by God founded on

  90. his love we share together participate

  91. with one another belong to one

  92. another coia is a work of God something

  93. he does on our

  94. behalf yet this does not mean we have no

  95. role to

  96. play the church can either grow and

  97. strengthen coin

  98. or we can shrink and weaken

  99. coia the coia of the church our life

  100. together grows through evangelism by

  101. telling the good news of Jesus Christ to

  102. those who do not know what he has done

  103. for us to those who sit in

  104. darkness our dasis inced this past

  105. weekend was all about evangelism our

  106. Bishop Bishop Alex charged all of our

  107. parishes to think about what it means to

  108. be

  109. places where the gospel is preached to

  110. those who've not

  111. heard but not just that we can also

  112. strengthen our

  113. coia there's two Dimensions to this coia

  114. there's the vertical Dimension the coia

  115. we all share with God and then there's a

  116. horizontal Dimension the coinonia that

  117. we share with one another indeed these

  118. two Dimensions reflect the two great

  119. Commandments the love of God and the

  120. love of neighbor so you'll be hearing

  121. more about growing coin

  122. evangelism a little later today in over

  123. the next few weeks but this morning

  124. right now I want to focus on how we

  125. strengthen our life together how can we

  126. make our coia stronger and our two of

  127. our scripture readings speak to this the

  128. first is Our Gospel reading from John 15

  129. if you have a Bible uh open it with

  130. me John 15 speaks to the vertical

  131. dimension of our coinonia the light

  132. together that we all share with

  133. God

  134. Jesus in his last supper discourse says

  135. in verse one I am the True

  136. Vine my father is the vine dresser every

  137. branch in me that does not bear fruit he

  138. takes away every branch that does bear

  139. fruit he prunes that it may bear

  140. more so Jesus is clear that we

  141. Christians are called to bear fruit

  142. fruits of the the spirit in our personal

  143. life the fruit of good works for God and

  144. neighbor but like a Vine and its

  145. branches the church can only bear fruit

  146. if it is connected to Christ if we

  147. remain abide in Jesus the source of our

  148. life together this word abide that's

  149. what it means it means to remain to stay

  150. where we are in Christ

  151. Jesus continues in verse four and five

  152. abide in me as I in you as the branch

  153. cannot bear fruit by itself unless it

  154. abides in the vine neither can you

  155. unless you abide in

  156. me so in order to bear fruit we must

  157. remain in

  158. Christ baptism engrafts us into Christ

  159. unites us to him by water and the spirit

  160. and it is there friends that we must

  161. remain remain in our baptism returning

  162. again and again to what Christ has done

  163. for us by his

  164. grace all the fruit that we may produce

  165. in this life is only by the grace of God

  166. by his

  167. Mercy John stot the great uh Anglican

  168. preacher and theologian called this

  169. Grace dependent

  170. effort Grace dependent effort I love

  171. that this is the call of the Christian

  172. Life to to abide in Christ so that we

  173. might bear

  174. fruit but how exactly does this work

  175. what does this practically mean well

  176. Jesus continues verses 9 and

  177. 10 as the father has loved me so I have

  178. loved you abide in my love if you keep

  179. my Commandments you will abide in my

  180. love just as I have kept my father's

  181. Commandments and abide in his love

  182. that's what abiding is all about it's

  183. about remaining in the love of God each

  184. one of us has been invited to share in

  185. the eternal love of the Triune god

  186. father Son and Holy Spirit the same love

  187. between the father and the son is what

  188. we are invited to participate in to coin

  189. Ania

  190. in when our lives are grounded in God's

  191. love then we bear

  192. fruit we will obey Christ's Commandments

  193. not out of fear or out of Duty but

  194. motivated by genuine love his love for

  195. us flows out of our hearts to our love

  196. for one

  197. another Abiding Love of God Is

  198. Fundamental to this vertical

  199. coinonia we live in an age where um our

  200. identity seems fraught it's become

  201. seeped into our politics people are are

  202. Waring over who they are what is the

  203. truest thing about them let me speak it

  204. very clearly today the truest thing

  205. about you is not your family it's not

  206. your work not your

  207. citizenship not your gender or

  208. sexuality not your political ideology

  209. the truest thing about you is that you

  210. are loved by God you are loved by an

  211. unimaginable

  212. eternal love Nothing Else

  213. Matters and it's not just you your

  214. family your friends your neighbors your

  215. enemy that person who's going to vote

  216. differently than you will they are loved

  217. by

  218. God this love this should be the

  219. animating principle of Our Lives this

  220. should be the thing that guides all of

  221. our

  222. decisions This Love should motivate us

  223. to share the good news with those who

  224. are

  225. lost the nature of coia coin Andia love

  226. is that it's always reaching outside of

  227. itself always reaching out to those

  228. outside of the walls outside of the

  229. community seeking motivated by the love

  230. of God to bring those in to

  231. fellowship and

  232. yet all too often we're distracted

  233. we forget about the love of God we

  234. forget about what Christ has done for us

  235. we live our lives thinking that we make

  236. ourselves that we sustain

  237. ourselves and then we become worried we

  238. become scared we don't trust in God to

  239. provide for us and inevitably we will

  240. love ourselves more than

  241. God all of us struggle with forgetting

  242. the good

  243. news abiding in Christ means returning

  244. day by day hour by hour Moment by moment

  245. to the truth of our existence to reality

  246. itself that all of us are loved with an

  247. unimaginable love this was Thomas

  248. Kramer's vision for the book of common

  249. prayer that through the Daily Office of

  250. morning and evening prayer through the

  251. worship of God's people in word and

  252. sacrament

  253. the good news of the Gospel would be

  254. recalled and remembered in the body and

  255. then we would be grounded in love sent

  256. out on

  257. Mission that's why we gather on

  258. Sundays that's why we listen to

  259. scripture pray and

  260. worship it reminds us of God's love

  261. which surpasses

  262. knowledge because it's remaining in that

  263. love that's the only way to bear fruit

  264. the only way to strengthen our vertical

  265. coia all of us are called to do this

  266. personally and we all do this together

  267. as a

  268. body abide in his

  269. love let's move on to the horizontal

  270. Dimension Paul's uh writing in Galatians

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  271. chapter

  272. 6 father Craig just finished up a

  273. Wednesday night bible study on Galatians

  274. I hope you joined him for that Galatians

  275. is such an important such a foundational

  276. book for the

  277. church here Paul is writing to a divided

  278. Church in Asia Minor there seems to be

  279. confusion confusion over the gospel

  280. confusion over Paul's Authority as an

  281. apostle and this confusion has

  282. undermined coia undermined life

  283. together sound familiar is there any

  284. confusion in our world you better

  285. believe it we need to hear what Paul

  286. says in Galatians here in chapter 6 Paul

  287. gives four concrete ways that the gala

  288. church can strengthen their coia their

  289. horizontal coia and these are true for

  290. us today as they were true for Paul in

  291. his

  292. day the first way that we strengthen

  293. coia is by restoring Sinners with

  294. gentleness look with me at verse one of

  295. Galatians

  296. 6 Brothers if anyone is caught in any

  297. transgression you who are spiritual

  298. should restore him in a spirit of

  299. gentleness keep watch on yourself lest

  300. you too be

  301. tempted the church is a community of

  302. redeemed Sinners all of us are

  303. constantly struggling Against the World

  304. the Flesh and the devil and all of us

  305. will fail

  306. we should lament when we experience sin

  307. in the church but we should not be

  308. surprised we are a community of people

  309. who are

  310. redeemed all Christians who are seeking

  311. to Faithfully walk with Christ in the

  312. church we will sin on occasion the

  313. important thing for Paul is how we treat

  314. one another when it

  315. happens do we treat our fellow brother

  316. and sister har

  317. ly judging them or do we treat them

  318. gently do we seek

  319. restoration or

  320. condemnation do we pridefully believe

  321. that ourselves that we are better than

  322. our sinful brother or sister that we

  323. never fall on occasion like they do or

  324. in humility do we see ourselves as no

  325. better than them as a sinner for whom

  326. Christ died

  327. when we sin we need our fellow

  328. Christians to restore us we need to hear

  329. the words of absolution the reminder to

  330. all of us that Jesus has died for us he

  331. forgives us and that forgiveness is

  332. accessible to us as a free gift if we

  333. put our faith in

  334. him the second

  335. uh concrete way to strengthen coia is is

  336. in verse two it's bearing one another's

  337. burdens Paul writes bear one another's

  338. burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ

  339. if anyone thinks he is something when he

  340. is nothing he deceives himself but let

  341. each one test his own work and then his

  342. reason to boast will be in himself alone

  343. and not in his neighbor for each will

  344. have to bear his own

  345. load in the first century by law Roman

  346. soldiers could compel any local person

  347. to carry equipment for

  348. them I mean can you imagine you know

  349. driving by Hunter Army Airfield or Fort

  350. Stewart and the soldiers saying you

  351. carry my bag for

  352. me but that's what it was like in the

  353. first century that was the

  354. law we see this in the the gospel of

  355. Matthew chapter 27 when they compel

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  356. Simon of sirene to bear the cross for

  357. Jesus but the law of Christ is different

  358. the law of Christ compels members of the

  359. church to Bear one another's burdens

  360. each one of us has a burden to

  361. bear sometimes that burden is light

  362. other times it is

  363. heavier all of us experience times of

  364. struggle times of

  365. difficulty all of us have a Time

  366. where we need help from others do you

  367. remember a time when you needed help

  368. from

  369. others whenever you experience that the

  370. church is called to Bear one another's

  371. burdens for the stronger to help the

  372. weaker life is difficult friends this is

  373. no

  374. surprise but we are not called to face

  375. this life alone we need each other we

  376. need to Bear one another's birth burdens

  377. in humility not counting ourselves as

  378. greater than our weaker

  379. brother but seeing in them our savior

  380. Christ who died for

  381. them this is not just true for those

  382. within our coia within our fellowship

  383. bearing one another's burdens is also

  384. something we do for Outsiders for those

  385. outside of the body he says manifest in

  386. our Mercy Ministries caring for the poor

  387. the oppressed the sick we do this every

  388. Thursday with the homeless in Savannah

  389. inviting them in feeding them trying to

  390. help them get back on their

  391. feet those who dwell in the cony of the

  392. church bear one another's

  393. burdens this past week we celebrated in

  394. the calendar the Feast of St terz of

  395. Avala the great uh 16th century

  396. Carmelite

  397. Mystic and she wrote in one of her uh

  398. letters love is the measure of our

  399. willingness to Bear

  400. crosses if you're not willing to Bear

  401. the burden to bear the cross of another

  402. perhaps it's because you don't really

  403. love

  404. them the third uh concrete way to

  405. strengthen coinonia is in verse six we

  406. are called to share generously and

  407. abundantly Paul

  408. continues let e each one who has taught

  409. the word share all good things with the

  410. one who teaches do not be deceived God

  411. is Not mocked whatever one SWS that he

  412. will also reap for the one who SWS to

  413. his own flesh will reap from the flesh

  414. corruption but the one who SWS to the

  415. spirit will reap eternal life

  416. this is one example of something we see

  417. throughout the New Testament Paul talks

  418. often about the distribution and the

  419. collection when he would visit a church

  420. he would often take up an offering uh

  421. from wealthy churches throughout uh the

  422. Empire so that money could be sent back

  423. to churches that were struggling

  424. experiencing famine we see this in 1

  425. Corinthians

  426. 16 and we continue this practice with

  427. the offering the offering is not simply

  428. the church get getting money from you so

  429. we could pay our

  430. bills it's continuing this work of

  431. collecting and distributing resources

  432. those who have much are called to give

  433. what they have to those who have little

  434. and we do this in all kinds of ways here

  435. we have as father Craig has spoken

  436. recently a family emergency fund money

  437. set aside by the vestri precisely for

  438. this to help those fallen on Hard Times

  439. to help those who are poor

  440. who don't

  441. have here Paul gives us an important

  442. principle that should inform our

  443. financial giving if we spend our money

  444. on worldly things on things that

  445. entertain our own desires then it will

  446. reap

  447. corruption however if we give generously

  448. of our wealth to the church if we seek

  449. his kingdom in our giving then we will

  450. reap eternal life not just in the future

  451. but

  452. today it will empower the church to

  453. extend God's kingdom to those who are

  454. outside the economies of the world

  455. function according to

  456. scarcity but the kingdom of God

  457. functions according to abundance the

  458. kingdom of God is not a zero sum game we

  459. give generously and sacrificially

  460. expecting God to exponentially multiply

  461. our gift just like that young boy with

  462. the Five Loaves and two fishes giving

  463. what he had expecting God to do the

  464. unbelievable we say it every week all

  465. things come from thee Oh Lord and of

  466. your own have we given

  467. thee we can only say that because we

  468. share in coia together giving generously

  469. and

  470. abundantly the fourth and final concrete

  471. way to strengthen our coia is doing good

  472. to one another look with me at verse 9

  473. Paul writes let us not grow weary of

  474. doing good for in due season we will

  475. reap if we do not give up so then as we

  476. have opportunity let us do good to

  477. everyone especially to those who are of

  478. the household of

  479. faith we'll be having a stewardship

  480. series soon but consider this a

  481. Prelude the thing about money and giving

  482. money is that that's easy God doesn't

  483. just want your money he wants all of you

  484. body soul mind

  485. Spirit he wants you to be his hands and

  486. feet in the world the ascended Jesus is

  487. at the right hand of the father he's not

  488. bodily present with us the way he was

  489. 2,000 years ago but he has sent his

  490. spirit and by his Spirit we the church

  491. the body of Christ today are his

  492. incarnate presence in this world we say

  493. it every week right after we pray for

  494. the

  495. money lift up your

  496. hearts lift up your

  497. hearts God wants all of you and he wants

  498. you to do good to your neighbors to your

  499. friends to your family to your enemies

  500. especially to one another in the

  501. church so how might God be calling you

  502. to bless your fellow believer this

  503. week and what way can you offer

  504. practical help to the body how might God

  505. be calling you to use your gifts for the

  506. mutual upbuilding of the

  507. church and if you have struggles with

  508. giving money with giving a tithe you're

  509. never going to give yourself to God

  510. friends our life together our conia

  511. begins with abiding in the love of

  512. Christ God founded the church because he

  513. loves us and as we seek Christ in

  514. worship and scripture and prayer we

  515. remember his mercy and Grace we remember

  516. the

  517. cross what he has done for

  518. us and the Holy Spirit will work in us

  519. to bear fruit the fruit of nature

  520. neighbor love and in the church the

  521. coinonia the life together looks like

  522. restoring Sinners with

  523. gentleness bearing one another's burdens

  524. sharing

  525. generously doing good to one

  526. another as we attend to these vertical

  527. and horizontal dimensions of coinonia we

  528. will fan the Flames of our life together

  529. coinonia is like a bonfire God lights

  530. the fire and by his grace thanks be to

  531. God we can't put it

  532. out but we can grow the fire we can

  533. strengthen the fire and we can invite

  534. others to sit around the fire with

  535. us the Christian Life is necessarily A

  536. communal life in a world obsessed with I

  537. and me

  538. I mean that's all you're hearing in the

  539. political ads these days I can't wait

  540. for them to stop I and me

  541. right we are called to be a people who

  542. focus on the we who focus on the

  543. US to

  544. ask not what's best for me but what's

  545. best for the church what's best for the

  546. community what's best for the

  547. kingdom and this is my great prayer for

  548. us Christ Church to be a people who are

  549. constant constantly Fanning the Flames

  550. of coia in every worship service every

  551. class every activity every Ministry

  552. everything we do should be about
