  1. would you pray with

  2. me and now may the words of my mouth and

  3. the meditations of our hearts be always

  4. acceptable in your sight oh Lord our

  5. Rock and Our Redeemer

  6. amen you may you may have heard the

  7. story about Sherlock Holmes and Dr

  8. Watson on a camping

  9. trip they enjoyed a lovely dinner and

  10. decided to go to sleep in their

  11. tent after a few hours Sherlock Holmes

  12. woke up and nudged his faithful friend

  13. saying

  14. Watson look at the sky what do you

  15. see Watson replied I see millions of

  16. stars

  17. what does it tell you Holmes

  18. asked Watson pondered for a minute and

  19. eventually

  20. answered

  21. astronomically it tells me that there

  22. are millions of galaxies and perhaps

  23. billions of

  24. planets astrologically I observe that

  25. Saturn is in Leo chronologically I

  26. deduce that the time is approximately 3

  27. A4 past 3:00

  28. a.m. theologically I can see that God is

  29. all powerful and we are small and

  30. insignificant

  31. meteorologically I suspect that it will

  32. be a beautiful day

  33. tomorrow what does it tell you

  34. Holmes Sherlock Holmes was silent for a

  35. moment and then he

  36. answered oh Watson it means that someone

  37. has stolen our tent

  38. while Watson's

  39. observations may not have been wrong on

  40. the one

  41. hand on the other hand he missed

  42. something of profound and obvious

  43. importance and in the mid of the

  44. busyness of Life of concerns with family

  45. friends and loved ones after an election

  46. season full of Stress and

  47. Anxiety all of which are important and

  48. deserve our attention

  49. mention we must never forget the core of

  50. who we are and what we are called to as

  51. people claimed by the Gospel of Jesus

  52. Christ and our psalm for this morning

  53. Psalm 146 may act as Sherlock

  54. Holmes by inviting us to remember a few

  55. things that are perhaps obvious but

  56. often forgotten

  57. the first is that we are invited to be a

  58. people who praise

  59. God Psalm 146 begins and ends with the

  60. word hallelujah which we translate

  61. praise the Lord and in Hebrew it is not

  62. a word directed towards God as we often

  63. think rather it is an imperative it is a

  64. command an invitation

  65. this invitation to praise God is the

  66. beginning and the end of the psalm

  67. praising the Lord bookin everything in

  68. between every aspect of this Psalm first

  69. passes through and ends with

  70. praise and this is the posture that we

  71. are commanded to

  72. adopt we must begin and end our lives

  73. with the praise of God and all the

  74. details in between must be understood

  75. through the lens of

  76. Hallelujah and while a reminder to

  77. praise the Lord is perhaps obvious for

  78. Christians it is worth

  79. considering in light of our busy lives

  80. with all that we have to get done in

  81. light of legitimate concerns about

  82. family and friends and and in the midst

  83. of the news that we see on a daily

  84. basis praise often feels

  85. secondary an added bonus

  86. perhaps maybe even unnecessary or

  87. forgotten but it is the core of who we

  88. are we are people made to praise

  89. God and as we learn to adopt this

  90. posture of praise we will interact with

  91. all the other details of Our Lives

  92. whether they be good or bad while still

  93. pointing others towards the goodness of

  94. God the second reminder is one of

  95. trust the psalmist tells us put not your

  96. trust in princes nor in any child of

  97. man or as one translation puts it do not

  98. put your confidence in powerful

  99. people for when one breathes his last he

  100. shall re return again to the Earth and

  101. in that day all his thoughts

  102. perish the

  103. psalmist reminds us that it is foolish

  104. to put our trust in those with

  105. power for every man will perish in

  106. return to the Earth

  107. and this is even more pronounced in

  108. Hebrew the word for man

  109. Adam is only one syllable difference for

  110. the word for Earth

  111. Adama poetically the difference between

  112. man Adam and Earth Adama is only a

  113. breath each one of us no matter how

  114. powerful no matter how capable came from

  115. dust and to dust we shall

  116. return

  117. so if you are happy with the results of

  118. the

  119. election remember do not put your trust

  120. in princes nor in any child of man but

  121. blessed is the one who has God of Jacob

  122. for his help and whose hope is in the

  123. Lord his

  124. God and if you are disappointed in the

  125. results of the election

  126. remember do not put your trust in

  127. princes nor in any child of man but

  128. blessed is the one who has the god of

  129. Jacob for his help and whose hope is in

  130. the Lord his

  131. God the words of the psalm do not change

  132. based on who is in

  133. power they do not change based on any

  134. political

  135. situation they ring true no matter who

  136. is president and they will continue to

  137. ring true Until the End of the Age and

  138. we must learn to say them and believe

  139. them no matter the

  140. circumstance the third and final

  141. reminder from

  142. Psalm 146 may be less obvious but it is

  143. no less

  144. important it is one of

  145. obedience we cannot praise God if we do

  146. not obey him we cannot praise God for

  147. caring for those who suffer wrong as

  148. Psalm as the psalmist says in verse 7 if

  149. we ourselves do not care for those who

  150. suffer wrong

  151. we cannot truly praise God for feeding

  152. the hungry if we

  153. ourselves do not feed the

  154. hungry we cannot give God praise for

  155. setting prisoners free for healing for

  156. helping for loving the righteous for

  157. caring for strangers for defending the

  158. fatherless and the Widow and for making

  159. the ways of the ungodly crooked if we

  160. ourselves do not do these things

  161. if we desire to praise and trust God we

  162. must be a people who participate in his

  163. work we cannot praise and trust God if

  164. we do not obey God these things are

  165. indistinguishable they are one in the

  166. same as people who are acclaimed by the

  167. gospel we must learn praise trust in

  168. obedience

  169. we must not lose sight of these things

  170. they are a reminder from Psalm

  171. 146 and they are even seen in Our Gospel

  172. passage for this morning in Mark

  173. 12 Jesus

  174. warns against the powerful people of

  175. this

  176. world the people who sit in high places

  177. that people who do not participate in

  178. the work of God but Devour the homes of

  179. widows

  180. he warns against them and says they will

  181. receive greater

  182. condemnation and he looks at the gift of

  183. a poor

  184. woman the gift of only a

  185. penny and says truly I say to you this

  186. poor Widow has put in more than all

  187. those who are contributing to the

  188. Box because

  189. only only someone who says in their

  190. heart of Hearts praise the Lord oh my

  191. soul I will praise the Lord as long as I

  192. live only someone who says put not your

  193. trust in princes but in the god of Jacob

  194. can give all they

  195. have even to the last penny to God who

  196. is their

  197. savior

  198. now you may be thinking to

  199. Yourself Praise trust and obedience

  200. sound night but as we chanted the psalm

  201. this morning maybe those words felt a

  202. little foreign a little

  203. forced maybe with all that is going on

  204. in your life whether it be busyness with

  205. family broken relationship or

  206. sickness maybe the words praise the Lord

  207. just don't seem quite

  208. right maybe as Wars rage and elections

  209. are decided you feel that it would be

  210. foolish not to put our trust in those

  211. with

  212. power after all they have the ability to

  213. get things

  214. done and

  215. perhaps you are in a season of doubt and

  216. frustration and obedience feels a long

  217. way

  218. off keep reading the Psalms

  219. let them give you words when you have

  220. none and know there are Psalms of lament

  221. and doubt Psalms for times of anger and

  222. frustration and there are more psalms of

  223. praise lean into them hold on to them

  224. let them change you adopt them as your

  225. own language as your own prayer

  226. know also that there is a great great

  227. cloud of witnesses who have gone before

  228. you who have offered their own prayers

  229. who have struggled and learned who have

  230. mourned and

  231. celebrated there are great many Saints

  232. who have demonstrated what it means to

  233. say praise the Lord oh my

  234. soul learn from

  235. them and know that the church is here

  236. she is here to guide us as we learn to

  237. praise God to trust God and to obey

  238. God and she will be here always inviting

  239. you along with all the saints and angels

  240. to pray blessed is the one whose hope is

  241. in the Lord his

  242. God and

  243. finally the holy spirit is with

  244. you he always will be reminding you what

  245. it means to say hallelujah praise the

  246. Lord in the name of the father son and

  247. holy spirit amen
