  1. let us

  2. pray overturn our captivity O Lord as

  3. when streams refresh the deserts of the

  4. South level the mountains and valleys of

  5. our hearts that our souls may be

  6. prepared for your

  7. coming in the name of the father and the

  8. son and the holy spirit amen you may be

  9. seated

  10. last month I'd had enough I was sick and

  11. tired of my messy

  12. Shed from the moment we moved in that

  13. shed has accumulated more and more and

  14. more

  15. stuff more Lawn Care gardening equipment

  16. more tools more

  17. toys and more toys

  18. and more

  19. toys I was wondering maybe it got so bad

  20. I'd have to buy a second shed just to

  21. fit all the

  22. toys but I was sick of it I was going to

  23. clean house or rather clean shed one

  24. Saturday morning a few weeks back Simeon

  25. and I went outside and we took

  26. everything out of the shed and we swept

  27. it we cleaned it out

  28. and then something amazing

  29. happened I discovered some things that I

  30. had forgotten about some things that I

  31. needed and i' also found some things

  32. that I no longer needed some stuff that

  33. I could get rid of some stuff I could

  34. sell for money and when it was all said

  35. and done I had a beautiful clean well

  36. organized shed I didn't need a second

  37. shed I just needed to clean the shed I

  38. had

  39. this is a helpful way for us to think

  40. about the ministry and message of John

  41. the

  42. Baptist John each Advent emerges from

  43. the Wilderness and calls us all to clean

  44. house to clear out all the stuff in our

  45. lives that get in the

  46. way throughout our life we have this

  47. tendency to acquire more and more things

  48. in the shed of our souls dreams desire

  49. desires bad habits resentments and

  50. grudges we need to take time to clean

  51. out our

  52. hearts lest our souls get filled with

  53. garbage with stuff that we don't

  54. need and when we finally do decide to

  55. clean our hearts out it'll be like my

  56. shed as soon as I opened my shed stuff

  57. fell on my

  58. head and isn't that true of our own

  59. lives we open open up our hearts to

  60. others and stuff falls on our heads and

  61. on our loved

  62. ones friends we need to clean house we

  63. need to heed the call of John the

  64. Baptist in Luke chapter

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  65. 3 so this morning we're going to look at

  66. John's

  67. Ministry his message and what it means

  68. for us today open your Bibles to Luke

  69. chap 3 it is a short but powerful Gospel

  70. reading

  71. Luke the great historian of the New

  72. Testament the writer of the book of Acts

  73. he sets John's Ministry in a particular

  74. time and

  75. place verse one in the 15th year of the

  76. reign of Tiberius Caesar Pontius Pilate

  77. being governor of Judea and Herod being

  78. tetrarch of Galilee and his brother

  79. Philip tetrarch of the region of rraa

  80. and tronus and linius tetrarch of

  81. abalene

  82. Luke is listing off the political

  83. leaders who ruled over Judea at that

  84. time and right from the start he is

  85. signaling to us that the promised land

  86. is under occupation it is not ruled by

  87. righteous Kings but by corrupt Gentile

  88. foreigners promised land has been

  89. divided between the Roman Imperial

  90. Governor Pontius Pilate and then three

  91. Jewish client Kings Jews who were

  92. complicit in the Roman Empire's rule who

  93. were participating in and benefiting

  94. from the subjugation of their own

  95. people indeed this was a very corrupt

  96. time in the

  97. world but then Luke goes on to talk

  98. about the religious leaders of Israel in

  99. verse two it was during the high

  100. priesthood of Annis and Caius and right

  101. away we should notice something strange

  102. is going on because according to the

  103. traditions of the laww there was only

  104. one high priest and that high priest

  105. held that position for life like a

  106. Supreme Court Justice why are there two

  107. high

  108. priests it's because the Romans had

  109. gotten into the Habit that they had uh

  110. done in many other places which is that

  111. each time there was a new Roman

  112. Administration ruling over a district

  113. they would set up their own puppet

  114. leaders they would appoint their own own

  115. authorities people loyal to them who

  116. would do what they said so even the

  117. religious worship of Israel is corrupt

  118. it's complicit in the rule of

  119. Rome both the political and religious

  120. leaders listed here will conspire to

  121. execute Jesus at the end of the book of

  122. Acts and right now Luke is setting us up

  123. he's reminding us he's telling us these

  124. names so that we will remember what they

  125. will do but among all this great

  126. corruption political religious there is

  127. a sign of Hope a small glimmer verse

  128. two the word of God came to John the son

  129. of Zachariah in the

  130. wilderness we learned about Zachariah

  131. earlier in Luke 1 he was one of the few

  132. righteous priests left in Israel during

  133. a very corrupt time while serving at the

  134. altar the Archangel Gabriel appeared to

  135. him and announced that his Barren wife

  136. Elizabeth would bear a son and that

  137. their son would not just be a priest but

  138. also a great prophet he says in Luke 1:

  139. 16 he will turn many of the children of

  140. Israel to the Lord their God and he will

  141. go before him in the spirit and power of

  142. Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers

  143. to the children and the dis obedient to

  144. the wisdom of the just and to make ready

  145. for the Lord a people

  146. prepared their son of course is John the

  147. Baptist even before his birth the angel

  148. tells us of his future Ministry how

  149. he'll go before the Lord in power in the

  150. spirit of Elijah indeed the Prophet

  151. Elijah is the key to understanding John

  152. the Baptist ministry you'll remember

  153. that in the book of First and 2 Kings

  154. which also tells us of a time of great

  155. political and religious corruption that

  156. Elijah was a faithful priest who was

  157. called by God to be a

  158. prophet he was the leader of a faithful

  159. Remnant in a time when everyone seemed

  160. to Bow their knees before Baal the Pagan

  161. God but Elijah did not spend his time in

  162. Jerusalem in Samaria in the centers of

  163. power in the capitals Elijah spent his

  164. ministry in the wilderness far away from

  165. the centers of power he spent his time

  166. with widows and orphans with the poor

  167. the sick the hungry and occasionally

  168. when he encountered the king he was uh

  169. held him

  170. account pronouncing the Lord's judgment

  171. over

  172. him so it's no surprise therefore that

  173. John the son of Zachariah the great

  174. priest and Prophet begins his ministry

  175. in the wilderness far from the centers

  176. of

  177. power the book of First Kings tells us a

  178. lot about how we should think about

  179. leadership one of its most important

  180. lessons though is applicable to the

  181. ministry of John time and time again

  182. Kings tells us that reform rarely comes

  183. from the center of power most of the

  184. time reform comes from the outside it

  185. comes from the Wilderness from the

  186. periphery from those on the

  187. margins after all powerful leaders will

  188. often use their power to perpetuate

  189. their own status and

  190. influence so when God raises up someone

  191. to reform he does so by turning to the

  192. Wilderness by turning to someone outside

  193. the centers of

  194. power that's where John is out in the

  195. wilderness far from the centers of power

  196. power but it's not just any Wilderness

  197. we're told in uh

  198. Luke 3 verse three he went into all the

  199. region around the

  200. Jordan and again your your Old Testament

  201. buzzer should be going off in your head

  202. the Wilderness around the Jordan was

  203. critical in Israel's history after

  204. wandering in the wilderness for 40 years

  205. the people of Israel entered the

  206. Promised Land by passing through the

  207. Wilder nness around the Jordan we're

  208. told in Joshua chapter 3 that as soon as

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  209. the feet of the priests who held the Ark

  210. of the Covenant touched the shores of

  211. the Jordan the waters parted before them

  212. just as the waters were parted over the

  213. Red Sea they passed through the waters

  214. on dry land and took possession of their

  215. inheritance all of this Old Testament

  216. background helps us understands John's

  217. message we get a summary of it in the

  218. second half of verse three that he went

  219. into all the region around the Jordan

  220. proclaiming a baptism of repentance for

  221. the Forgiveness of sins right here Luke

  222. summarizes John's message let's break it

  223. down a

  224. bit first John is baptizing he's

  225. baptizing in the very River Israel

  226. passed through on their way out of

  227. wilderness to the proom Promised Land

  228. This is intentional John is echoing that

  229. critical time in Israel's early life

  230. remember Israel spent 40 years in the

  231. wilderness wandering around it was a

  232. time of refining their hearts were not

  233. ready to receive the promises of God an

  234. entire generation had to die so that the

  235. new generation could pass through the

  236. waters in a similar way John has

  237. returned to the wilderness

  238. and he's reminding Israel of the

  239. promises of God he's reminding them of

  240. their time in the wilderness their need

  241. to pass again through the waters of the

  242. Jordan it's a call to start over to

  243. return where things began a call to

  244. repentance the Greek word metanoia it

  245. means to turn around and repentance has

  246. three steps all of them are essential

  247. for it to be true repentance

  248. first we have to recognize that we are

  249. going in the wrong

  250. direction this requires wisdom and

  251. discernment we have to see clearly and

  252. honestly I had to recognize I had a

  253. problem with my shed before I could

  254. clean it out and a lot of us don't even

  255. get there a lot of us are so blind to

  256. the true nature of our souls we don't

  257. realize that we need to change I like

  258. the direction I'm going what's wrong

  259. with it but when we do recognize we're

  260. going in the wrong direction then

  261. secondly we need to make a

  262. decision decision involves the desire

  263. for Change and the choice to

  264. change see we may recognize that we're

  265. going in the wrong direction but we may

  266. not want to

  267. change or we may want to

  268. change but don't have the will to choose

  269. to change

  270. if

  271. we never want to change then we'll never

  272. choose something

  273. different that's that second step making

  274. a decision Lord I want to change I want

  275. a clean shed I'm going to take action

  276. and clean out my shed that's the third

  277. step we take

  278. action repentance is not real until we

  279. change

  280. Behavior once we choose to turn around

  281. we must walk in a new way walk in the

  282. path of

  283. obedience me cleaning out my shed does

  284. me no good if I don't keep it up it's

  285. just going to get messy

  286. again this friends is John's

  287. message the people of God are heading in

  288. the wrong

  289. direction they've been corrupted by the

  290. political and religious powers that be

  291. the principalities and powers that are

  292. at war with the Lord the only way for

  293. Israel to avert

  294. disaster is to return to return to where

  295. all things started return to the

  296. Wilderness pass through the

  297. Jordan so that they can inherit again

  298. the promised

  299. land and what's so interesting and

  300. radical about John's message is that

  301. while it happens in the context of a

  302. covenant a corporate

  303. promise John calls out to individuals

  304. that individual Israelites need to

  305. repent to turn around and to return to

  306. where they

  307. started only then will God offer his

  308. great gift the Forgiveness of

  309. sins that's the goal of baptism and

  310. repentance that God would see our sins

  311. and wipe them

  312. away but there's a

  313. problem John knew there was a problem

  314. the problem is that we cannot truly

  315. repent without the grace of

  316. God the problem is not our wrong

  317. direction but our broken

  318. hearts we can't recognize that we're

  319. going in the wrong direction our hearts

  320. don't desire to change we can't choose

  321. something new because they are

  322. broken we need God to act we need God to

  323. clean house to create in us new Hearts

  324. so that we can

  325. repent and this is where we got to

  326. change my metaphor a bit see we are the

  327. sheds we are not the person cleaning the

  328. shed the shed can't clean itself it

  329. needs someone else to act someone else

  330. to do something they cannot do and yet

  331. how often friends do we try to clean our

  332. own Hearts we try to clear out to do

  333. better to try harder when we can't it's

  334. something God through his grace must do

  335. for

  336. us the New Testament is clear that

  337. repentance is a work that God does in us

  338. it's only possible by the Holy Spirit

  339. John knows this which is why later on in

  340. chapter 3 in verse 16 he says I baptize

  341. you with water water but he who is

  342. mightier than I is coming the strap of

  343. whose sandal I am not worthy to untie he

  344. will baptize you with the Holy Spirit

  345. and with

  346. fire John knows that his ministry his

  347. message it's only a sign it's pointing

  348. to something greater it's pointing to

  349. the action of God what he will do on our

  350. behalf in the person of Jesus

  351. Christ Christians often confuse the

  352. baptism of John with the baptism of

  353. Jesus they're not the same and as a

  354. result there are many Christians who

  355. think repentance is necessary before

  356. baptism but that's old Covenant logic

  357. that's John's baptism the logic of the

  358. New Covenant is different because we

  359. cannot repent without the grace of God

  360. the Holy Spirit we need God to act first

  361. we need God by his grace to recreate our

  362. hearts to make us as the Liturgy says

  363. regenerate by the Holy

  364. Spirit through the waters of baptism the

  365. Holy Spirit acts upon us and makes us

  366. new creatures so that we might repent

  367. following in the way of

  368. John this is clarified later on in Acts

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  369. chapter 19 there's a very interesting

  370. scenario there Paul comes to Ephesus and

  371. there he finds some disciples and he

  372. says to them did you received the Holy

  373. Spirit when you believed and they say no

  374. we've not even heard of the Holy Spirit

  375. there's a Holy

  376. Spirit and then Paul responds into what

  377. were you baptized and they said into

  378. John's

  379. baptism Paul goes on John baptized with

  380. the baptism of repentance telling the

  381. people to believe in the the one who was

  382. to come after him this is

  383. Jesus and on hearing this they were

  384. baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus

  385. they were baptized again because John's

  386. baptism wasn't enough and when Paul had

  387. laid his hands on them verse 6 The Holy

  388. Spirit came upon them and they began

  389. speaking in tongues and

  390. prophesying the book of Acts makes the

  391. distinction very clear that what John is

  392. doing in the water is very different

  393. than what Jesus does in these

  394. Waters in these Waters in the New

  395. Covenant we have Recreation New Creation

  396. regeneration God gives us a new heart he

  397. cleans out the shed of our souls so that

  398. we might

  399. repent this indeed is what I learned in

  400. Germany this was the teachings of the

  401. reformers Luther Calvin kranner and yet

  402. we're so tempted to make it about our

  403. repentance about me proving that I'm

  404. good enough that I'm contrite

  405. enough that I can earn God's grace

  406. through my

  407. repentance John Cuts right to the heart

  408. of

  409. that God needs to act and to do

  410. something new in

  411. us so what does this have to do with us

  412. today

  413. with the season of

  414. Advent how should we receive John's

  415. Ministry and John's

  416. message well let me offer you two

  417. thoughts first we learn from John that

  418. repentance is really a kind of

  419. returning through holy baptism the Holy

  420. Spirit has cleaned house he has created

  421. in us new Hearts we are now capable of

  422. repenting indeed that is why we baptize

  423. infants so that that child can receive

  424. the gift of God and learn what it means

  425. to be truly repentant over the course of

  426. their

  427. lives for Christians repentance takes on

  428. a different character it's less about

  429. turning around and more about

  430. returning returning to the grace of God

  431. returning to our baptisms and the

  432. promises given to us returning to God's

  433. work in US

  434. because over the course of Our Lives all

  435. of us Drift from the path we neglect our

  436. walk with Christ like my shed our souls

  437. get filled with more and more stuff and

  438. not all of it's bad some of it is good

  439. but we can't know what's good and what's

  440. bad until we let God Clean us out that's

  441. what the season of advent is all about

  442. Advent the beginning of the lurgical

  443. calendar is about

  444. returning we return to the place of

  445. Israel before the coming of Christ we

  446. long for God to do something new in us

  447. to give us a new

  448. beginning the Advent gospel is

  449. simple if you need a fresh start it is

  450. possible but it's only possible when we

  451. return to the

  452. Wilderness and we pass through the

  453. waters of

  454. repentance and then receive the

  455. Forgiveness of sins the promises of

  456. eternal

  457. life the second thing I think this means

  458. for us today is a word about reform like

  459. John like the time of Kings we live in a

  460. time of great corruption among our

  461. political leaders among our religious

  462. leaders among

  463. institutions indeed in our own

  464. Hearts just this past week I learned

  465. from a friend about another Church

  466. leader who had a fall from grace after

  467. uh committing a moral

  468. failure it's no surprise that people are

  469. suspicious of

  470. churches the news is full of how our

  471. leaders fail us all the

  472. time if we want reform if we want to

  473. return we can't look to those at the

  474. center of

  475. power instead we should look to those on

  476. the mark

  477. those in the wilderness those away from

  478. the centers of power if you think

  479. something needs to change at this church

  480. don't come to Craig and

  481. I prayerfully discern what God is

  482. calling you to do here and tell us we

  483. want to know about it right but we're

  484. not going to fix it for you no Leader's

  485. going to fix it for you God has put his

  486. spirit in each one of us so that we can

  487. prayerfully and wisely discern how we

  488. can join in his

  489. work and whenever a prophet comes to

  490. reform throughout scripture throughout

  491. the ages it always comes from the

  492. outside from the Wilderness from the

  493. periphery indeed that's what Jesus did

  494. as our reading from Malachi made clear

  495. he spent time with the widows the

  496. orphans the poor the hungry the sick

  497. those in

  498. prison that's what we are called to do

  499. in m Matthew 25 when Jesus is talking

  500. about the End of the Age the metric for

  501. judgment is whatever you did for the

  502. least of these you do it unto me and

  503. that's why for Advent we have

  504. opportunities for you to give for you to

  505. serve a coat drive for refugees the dive

  506. on Thursdays with the homeless uh the

  507. ministry of the Kramers internationally

  508. in Syria which definitely needs our

  509. prayers today

  510. as the church listens to the least of

  511. these we develop a vision for what real

  512. reform could look like reform that looks

  513. like the kingdom of God because that's

  514. the only reform that really matters our

  515. sinful and lost world needs the kingdom

  516. of

  517. God and we learn and discern the kingdom

  518. by listening to the voice of those

  519. crying in the

  520. wilderness and then we can participate

  521. in the Fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy

  522. in our own day that every Valley will be

  523. filled and every mountain and Hill will

  524. be made low and the Crooked shall become

  525. straight and the rough places shall

  526. become level and All Flesh shall see the

  527. salvation of

  528. god so let's take some time to reflect

  529. on how God might be calling you to

  530. return to his promises his to your

  531. baptism

  532. and what it might look like for us to

  533. reform in our own day
