  1. may I speak to you in the name of the

  2. father son and holy spirit

  3. amen after giving a lecture to a

  4. classroom full of students a theology

  5. Professor took took some time to answer

  6. any questions the students might

  7. have some students asked about fourth

  8. Century trinitarian

  9. controversy other students asked about

  10. how Jesus could be both fully human and

  11. fully

  12. God other students asked about how

  13. Christian theology relates to secular

  14. politics and then one student one Brave

  15. student asked a more personal question

  16. the student asked when were you

  17. saved now now this question when were

  18. you saved is a more personal question

  19. than a that a uh theology Professor

  20. usually gets so he took his time and

  21. thought for a moment as if he was trying

  22. to recollect the moment that he said the

  23. sinner's prayer or maybe he was trying

  24. to remember the date of his

  25. baptism then he

  26. said 2,000 years

  27. ago I was saved 2,000 years

  28. ago I found this answer to be surprising

  29. and eventually quite

  30. helpful because it places Jesus Christ

  31. front and

  32. center this theology Professor was

  33. acknowledging that Jesus Christ is the

  34. fixed Point around which his life

  35. revolves rather than trying to fit Jesus

  36. into his

  37. story this professor had recognized that

  38. his life his salvation had been grafted

  39. into the story of Jesus Christ

  40. and perhaps there is no better season of

  41. The Church calendar to remember that

  42. Jesus is the fixed point in all our

  43. lives than the season of

  44. Christmas and maybe there is no better

  45. passage to help us remember that Jesus

  46. Christ is the center of all things than

  47. our gospel passage for this morning John

    John 1 chapter mention

  48. chapter 1

  49. now John's prologue the beginning of

  50. John's gospel is carefully constructed

  51. and masterfully

  52. designed and it uses tropes from Greek

  53. philosophy that would have been familiar

  54. to his original audience so if you are a

  55. fan of the philosophical landscape of

  56. first century Greco Roman culture then

  57. today is your day today's your Super

  58. Bowl and if not if you're not interested

  59. in the philosophical lscape of first

  60. century GRE Roman

  61. culture Buckle

  62. in and Hold On Tight cuz here we go John

  63. Begins by saying in the beginning was

  64. the

  65. word and the Word was with God and the

  66. Word was

  67. God he was in the beginning with God all

  68. things were made through him and without

  69. him was not anything that was

  70. made the Greek word that we translate

  71. into English as word in the beginning

  72. was the word the Greek word is

  73. logos Scholars note that in Greek

  74. philosophy this word is deeply

  75. significant and its meaning can be hard

  76. to nail

  77. down it can mean something like word

  78. word thought

  79. principle speech or

  80. reason but it is also has something to

  81. do with the way the universe is

  82. ordered as one commentator puts it the

  83. Greek schools of thought in Greek

  84. schools of thought the universe is the

  85. cosmos in its in ordered

  86. place and what lies behind the Cosmos

  87. and gives it order is the

  88. logos so as Greeks were looking around

  89. at everything that is at the entire

  90. universe they were thinking there must

  91. be something behind it that gives it

  92. order this was the

  93. logos and John is saying that he's

  94. adopting it and he's saying that Jesus

  95. Christ is in fact the

  96. logos he is the one that gives order to

  97. the

  98. cosmos what's more John's prologue

  99. immediately makes one think of Genesis

  100. CH 1 both Genesis 1 and John 1 begin

  101. with the phrase in the

  102. beginning and in

  103. Genesis how does God create the

  104. universe how is it that God brought

  105. order to the formless void how did God

  106. bring light to the darkness that covered

  107. the face of the

  108. deep he

  109. spoke he said let there be light he used

  110. words John again is pointing his

  111. audience to the fact that Jesus is the

  112. very thing that brought order to the

  113. universe Jesus Christ is the word of God

  114. made flesh

  115. another theme that is prominent

  116. throughout the beginning of John's uh

  117. gospel is

  118. light he uses the metaphor of light over

  119. and over again making it clear for his

  120. audience that Jesus is the light of the

  121. world one of the things that's

  122. interesting about light is you can't

  123. really see

  124. it but yet it is the source that allows

  125. you to see

  126. you cannot grabb a hold of light and yet

  127. it fills a room and allows you to see

  128. clearly Jesus Christ is the very source

  129. of light from which we live our

  130. lives in these first 18 verses John

  131. masterfully places Jesus Christ at the

  132. center of all history Jesus is the very

  133. thing that orders the universe Jesus

  134. Christ is the one through which all

  135. things were made and without him there

  136. would be

  137. nothing and just as God spoke in the

  138. beginning and brought light Into

  139. Darkness so too does Jesus's birth bring

  140. a new beginning to the created

  141. World a new beginning that once again

  142. brings order in into chaos light Into

  143. Darkness this is what we celebrate in

  144. Christmas this is what the church

  145. remembers that Jesus the birth of

  146. Jesus was not simply an

  147. event it is the

  148. event it is the event that brought about

  149. a new story of a story that brings life

  150. to a world full of death it brings

  151. Redemption and

  152. salvation to a world full of

  153. disorientation and

  154. Brokenness when the word became flesh he

  155. he brought life and

  156. light into the

  157. world and death and darkness shall not

  158. overcome it

  159. this is the story that we live

  160. from this is the story that we have been

  161. grafted into through our baptism through

  162. the life death and resurrection of Jesus

  163. Christ but we too often look

  164. elsewhere we often do not recognize the

  165. Light of Christ

  166. we too often try to Define our own

  167. stories and this temptation is

  168. especially true here in

  169. America we love our

  170. individualism we love the story of

  171. someone who's self-defined who who

  172. picked them themselves up by their

  173. bootstraps we love the story of someone

  174. who has no story other than the one that

  175. they have

  176. chosen the danger of course is that we

  177. have all learn to pick and choose what

  178. we want our story to

  179. be like our phones that we customize

  180. picking this app and

  181. that we prefer that our lives be

  182. customized to be exactly the ones that

  183. we

  184. want and Jesus Christ

  185. becomes just another

  186. accessory just another thing along among

  187. the long list of things that we have

  188. chosen and can choose to get rid of if

  189. it suits

  190. us what we fail to remember is that the

  191. truest part of who we are the deepest

  192. part of us is Jesus Christ he is the

  193. heir we breathe the light that allows us

  194. to

  195. see even when we do not recognize it

  196. Jesus is the center of everything

  197. including our

  198. lives even when we

  199. forget we were saved 2,000 years

  200. ago therefore we must adopt the posture

  201. of John the Baptist who as John tells us

  202. was sent from

  203. God and in the Christian tradition

  204. whenever John is depicted in art he is

  205. nearly always

  206. pointing not towards himself not towards

  207. his own

  208. story but towards Jesus

  209. Christ towards the light of the

  210. world this is the posture that we must

  211. take we must recognize that we are not

  212. the source of our own salvation and we

  213. must bear

  214. witness we must bear witness to the

  215. goodness of a God who saves

  216. us we must Point others towards the

  217. light of the world and live in Defiance

  218. of the

  219. darkness we must recognize that even in

  220. the midst of Despair even in the midst

  221. of Heartache we can live in Defiance of

  222. the darkness of our broken world because

  223. the light still

  224. shines no matter what happens no matter

  225. what comes our way we can always say

  226. with courage and confidence the light

  227. shines the light shines and the Darkness

  228. shall not overcome

  229. it we must live in defiance of hatred

  230. and point others towards Jesus Christ

  231. who is the very appearance of God's

  232. loving kindness towards

  233. us we must not join those who would have

  234. us love our or hate our

  235. enemies rather we must Point others

  236. towards the one who taught us to love

  237. our

  238. enemies we must not prioritize

  239. the rich and the

  240. powerful rather we must direct others

  241. towards the one who taught us to love

  242. the least of

  243. these we must not be a violent

  244. people but Point others towards Jesus

  245. Christ who is the Prince of

  246. Peace we must live in Defiance towards

  247. the darkness in our own heart hearts of

  248. all the vices that occupy our hearts and

  249. Minds because we bear witness to the

  250. light of the

  251. world and we must learn to

  252. die we must learn to die to ourselves

  253. daily as we point others towards Jesus

  254. Christ the word made flesh the light of

  255. the

  256. world whose love is strong longer than

  257. death amen
