  1. and may the words of my mouth and

  2. meditations of my heart be acceptable in

  3. your sight my Lord my rock and my

  4. redeemer good morning have a seat

  5. please in the winter of 1982

  6. I made the choice to accept Jesus Christ

  7. as my personal Savior and Lord the time

  8. is memorable for me because it had never

  9. occurred to me that this was a decision

  10. I needed to make you see in

  11. 1963 I entered the Bishop's Latin School

  12. a school exclusively for young Roman

  13. Catholic boys who wanted to become

  14. Catholic

  15. priests we went to Eucharist daily

  16. confess s weekly we studied classical

  17. greek latin systematic and various

  18. theologies in various forms

  19. rigorously but in my junior year I

  20. decided that I was not given the gift of

  21. Chastity and

  22. celibacy and I did not want them in my

  23. future I wanted to be called daddy

  24. rather be called

  25. father so obviously I couldn't stay in

  26. that school and become a Catholic

  27. priest although I left the school I was

  28. still very dedicated in my prayer life

  29. and solved in my belief in my Triune God

  30. I only tell you this because it helps

  31. set the scene for my

  32. shock some time passed and I was happily

  33. married father of two daughters eagly

  34. involved in the Episcopal church trying

  35. to bring younger people into a

  36. congregation whose average age was about

  37. 80

  38. so one winter night when Joan and I were

  39. involved in a home study group our young

  40. priest challenged me by asking if I had

  41. accept Jesus as my personal Savior and

  42. Redeemer I was taken aback I knew that

  43. Jesus was the Incarnate Son of God and

  44. my redeemer whose sacrifice on the cross

  45. had atoned for my sins what was this

  46. personal savior hang up this guy

  47. had we have talked calmly at some length

  48. he finally explained that Jesus wanted a

  49. personal commitment and a relationship

  50. with me and he asked me that if I truly

  51. believe that Jesus was who he said he

  52. was who was holding me

  53. back or would it take from my head

  54. knowledge to transform and become heart

  55. knowledge as

  56. well I went home asking myself that same

  57. question what was my hang up if I I

  58. really knew that Jesus was the son of

  59. God who died so that my sins would be

  60. forgiven why not move to the next step

  61. invite him into my life and enter into a

  62. very real personal relationship with him

  63. so I did just that and I couldn't help

  64. but wonder why none of my Jesuit priests

  65. instructors had ever encouraged me to do

  66. that I had spent years under their

  67. demanding teaching and they had never

  68. appointed me to the path of a deeper

  69. Journey with Jesus and I've come to

  70. believe that it's possibly because they

  71. were as unfamiliar with it as I

  72. was I recently read an email from Dr

  73. Scott Rhoden of the center for stward

  74. leaders it was the answer to my prayers

  75. and a focus and inspiration for this

  76. sermon as Dr Scott Rhoden described his

  77. and my experience this

  78. way through a convergence of pure grace

  79. of God God a new focus on both scripture

  80. and the writings and teachings of the

  81. Saints and the fellowship of a small

  82. band of fellow

  83. Travelers I've discovered a journey I

  84. never knew existed the words that best

  85. describe this journey for me and I hope

  86. for all of us are so much

  87. more so much more there is so much more

  88. to following Jesus than I'd ever

  89. realized or imagined so much more grace

  90. so much more love so much more peace

  91. there is so much more intimacy with the

  92. Triune God so much more joy in

  93. prayer so much more power to love my

  94. enemies and so much more freedom to

  95. become lost in the love of of Christ is

  96. one of the lines that my favorite Kyo

  97. prison ministry song say a little more

  98. of Jesus and so much less of

  99. me this new Focus for my life comes as a

  100. result of realizing that the life of

  101. following Jesus begins with so much less

  102. so much less of me so much less of my

  103. agenda so much less of my

  104. identity so much less of my

  105. pride so much of much less of my need to

  106. perform and produce so much less of my

  107. ownership of the things that only belong

  108. to

  109. God so much less of my superficial

  110. understanding understand in of what it

  111. means to follow Jesus in short so much

  112. less of

  113. Greg as I thought further instruction

  114. following my acceptance of Jesus my

  115. Savior I came across an author Brandon

  116. Manning a former Holy Ghost father who

  117. had left the priesthood and written

  118. several books The Lion The

  119. Lamb the regam muffin gospels and I read

  120. them regularly in this Advent devotional

  121. Brandon Manning recounts a conversation

  122. between St Francis and brother

  123. Leo brother Leo is

  124. struggling with the desire to be holy in

  125. his own eyes and fr St Francis responds

  126. Holiness Holiness is not a Personal

  127. Achievement it's an emptiness you

  128. discover in yourself instead of

  129. resenting it you accept it and it

  130. becomes the free space where the Lord

  131. can create a new hoard nothing for

  132. yourself sweep your house clean sweep

  133. out even the attic even the nagging

  134. painful consciousness of your past

  135. renounce everything that is heavy even

  136. the weight of your sins see only The

  137. Compassion the infinite patience and The

  138. Tender Love Of Christ Jesus is Lord that

  139. suffices now in our Ephesians reading

  140. today we reassured especially in the

  141. last few

  142. verses God's purpose was that we Jews

  143. who were the first to trust in Christ

  144. would bring praise and glory to God and

  145. now you Gentiles have also heard the

  146. truth the good news that God Saves

  147. you and when you believed in Christ he

  148. identified you as his own by giving you

  149. the Holy Spirit whom you promised long

  150. ago the spirit is God's

  151. guarantee that he will give us the

  152. inheritance he promised and that he has

  153. purchased us to be his own people he did

  154. this so that we would praise and glorify

  155. him now as a young Roman Catholic man

  156. I'd never heard of the Westminster

  157. catechism it was way too Presbyterian

  158. way too

  159. prestant so my wonderful wife shared the

  160. first question and answerers to why we

  161. were what is the chief end of man man's

  162. Chief end is to glorify God and enjoy

  163. him

  164. forever that sounded

  165. perfect John Marc Conor in a book called

  166. practicing the way typically says it

  167. this way contrary to what many assume

  168. Jesus did not invite people to convert

  169. to Christianity he didn't even call them

  170. to become Christians he invited people

  171. to follow him and to Apprentice under

  172. him into a whole new way of living to be

  173. transformed Karma continues there was a

  174. way of life modeled personally by Jesus

  175. himself that is far beyond anything else

  176. on offer in this world it can open you

  177. up to God's presence and Power in the

  178. ways most people only dream of then he

  179. offers this invitation we talk a lot

  180. about the call to follow and believe in

  181. Jesus to put your trust TR and

  182. confidence in him to lead you to life

  183. this is good and fitting but it must

  184. also be said that Jesus believes in

  185. you don't forget Jesus believes in you

  186. he believes that you and I can become

  187. his apprentices starting right where you

  188. are you can follow him into a life in

  189. the Kingdom that fulfills your deepest

  190. desires regardless of where you are on

  191. your journey with Jesus there is so much

  192. more I'm slowly coming to learn that the

  193. journey to follow Jesus is a process of

  194. be turned inside out upside down

  195. unfolded and undone it leaves no place

  196. in my life that is untouched or hidden

  197. it doesn't ask for equal space in my

  198. life with everything else it demands to

  199. become my life com's description of

  200. being an apprentice unto Jesus means

  201. watching what he does practic it under

  202. his guiding hand and then let him live

  203. in and through

  204. us I used to think that following Jesus

  205. required reordering our priorities from

  206. self career marriage family God two God

  207. marriage family career

  208. itself I'm coming to see that

  209. apprenticing unto Jesus means the life

  210. has but one essential priority intimacy

  211. with the Triune God when that

  212. relationship has preeminence over our

  213. entire life everything else is filled

  214. with richness and

  215. purpose it is the fruit promised by

  216. Jesus to those who would seek ye first

  217. the kingdom of

  218. God apprenticing unto Jesus transform us

  219. transforms us into our deepest truest

  220. self the person God created us to be the

  221. M moment of our

  222. Inception the person created us to be

  223. from the creation of the world it is a

  224. process of being formed into the people

  225. in love in

  226. Christ Rob Robert molland in his book

  227. invitation to a journey describes what

  228. it means to be transformed into the

  229. image of Christ often people have the

  230. idea that the image of Christ is

  231. something alien to human

  232. beings something strange that God wants

  233. to add to our life something imposed

  234. from outside that really doesn't fit Us

  235. in reality however the image of Christ

  236. is the Fulfillment of the deepest

  237. hungers of the human heart for

  238. wholeness he goes on to describe

  239. spiritual formation as the great

  240. reversal from being the subject who

  241. controls all other things to being a

  242. person who is shaped by the presence

  243. purpose and power of God in all

  244. things this transformation is not a

  245. withdrawn private cocooning process it

  246. is transformation to a life lived for

  247. others the self-empty that leads to

  248. Christ in filling also leads to selfless

  249. service and unconditional

  250. love for me the so much more aspect of

  251. this journey has been experienced most

  252. profoundly in the idea of finding Union

  253. not only with Christ but within the

  254. presence of the Trinity itself is taking

  255. seriously Paul's admonition in Ephesians

  256. we've been raised with Christ and seated

  257. with him in the Heavenly places in

  258. Christ Jesus Ephesians 2:6 seated with

    Ephesians 2:6

  259. Christ in the intimate Fellowship of the

  260. triun god is an overwhelming

  261. idea but it's one that the great Saints

  262. of the church all understood and

  263. experienced it is our loving God's

  264. invitation to be with him in a far more

  265. profound way than I have ever known or

  266. experienced previously

  267. yet is what my soul has thirsted for

  268. ever since I accepted Jesus as my

  269. personal Savior and Lord in our Bible

  270. study group we've been reading and

  271. discussing ji Packer's work knowing

  272. god and I've come to realize that God in

  273. all three persons has been waiting for

  274. me to draw closer in real intimate

  275. contact with him ever since I accepted

  276. Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior

  277. patiently waiting all the these years

  278. for me to approach communicate connect

  279. and to know my gracious father and God

  280. far more deeply and richly as he had

  281. always

  282. intended this opportunity is

  283. intoxicating and wonderful and I eagerly

  284. want to draw nearer and know my father

  285. more

  286. intimately now we just celebrated

  287. Christmas when God gave us the Ultimate

  288. Gift the Incarnation God With Us how

  289. does that audacious truth become our

  290. lived reality in

  291. 2025 here is a New Year's resolution

  292. worth

  293. considering I believe it starts when we

  294. lose ourselves more deeply sweep out our

  295. atcts surrender our lives down to the

  296. every second Penny thought attitude pain

  297. and hope so let us set aside everything

  298. else that we plan for 2025 and make this

  299. journey our soul and our Soul's

  300. aspiration Jesus is waiting for each of

  301. us as in Revelation we're told behold I

  302. stand at the door and knock the holy

  303. spirit in the power of transformation

  304. calls to us the Deeper Life in un Union

  305. with God and the astonishing

  306. transformation of our heart mind soul

  307. and strength beckons us let this be the

  308. year when we accept jesus' invitation to

  309. this journey the journey is so much more

  310. more in jesus' name we pray amen
