  1. let us pray oh father I pray that your

  2. gospel the good news of Jesus Christ

  3. will be proclaimed and heard and applied

  4. to all of our lives by the presence and

  5. power and conviction of your holy

  6. spirit amen please be

  7. seated I did something for the first

  8. time this past weekend I should say we

  9. as a family did with some reputation we

  10. bought something via Facebook

  11. Marketplace some of you may be

  12. experienced in that sort of thing it's

  13. you just never know am I getting a good

  14. price is this something that I need does

  15. it even exist are the people

  16. real but after negotiating with someone

  17. and feeling confident Jack and I went

  18. out and got the item and you know those

  19. prices are completely arbitrary it's

  20. totally based on self-interest you know

  21. is it worth it is the trouble worth it

  22. is the trip worth it or for the people

  23. selling you know how much is this worth

  24. to me I've sold a couple things via

  25. Facebook Marketplace mainly my

  26. motivation was just getting rid of them

  27. and putting a little bit of value on it

  28. so someone would come and get it and

  29. take it away didn't have any care or

  30. concern for it but it makes me wonder

  31. what is the foundation for how we value

  32. something what determines the

  33. value like I said for so many things

  34. it's self-interest it's what is in it

  35. for

  36. us motivational speakers that I've

  37. listened to in the past who are training

  38. you to speak would emphasize that you

  39. know you've got to get inside your

  40. audience's mind and who are all tuned in

  41. to the radio station wi FM what's in it

  42. for me

  43. that's a very

  44. cynical approach to the way that we

  45. value things but it's so often true in

  46. the world you know if you have the right

  47. connections you can buy somebody you can

  48. buy a person almost anywhere in the

  49. world if you know the right people and

  50. how to go about it that person that you

  51. buy according to one organization a

  52. nonprofit that helps take people out of

  53. human

  54. trafficking you could buy someone around

  55. the world anywhere from $45 upwards to

  56. $50,000 for a really valuable person and

  57. that's the state of the world another

  58. organization indicated that they thought

  59. there was about 40 million people around

  60. the world in some form of slavery

  61. whether it's forced labor by government

  62. or individuals whether it's sexual

  63. exploitation however it is that many

  64. people being bought sold and used us for

  65. someone else's self-interest and

  66. Indulgence some of them being like the

  67. stuff I just wanted to get rid

  68. of but what is

  69. God's foundation for valuing people is

  70. it that arbitrary as well is it based on

  71. a person's characteristics or how

  72. they've done in

  73. life that's the good news for us God

  74. does have a foundation for how he values

  75. each and every person if reminds me of a

  76. friend of ours A good friend of ours who

  77. lives in Charleston who has two

  78. daughters and when we were visiting them

  79. one of the daughters the oldest one was

  80. in her teenage years like 16 or 17 and

  81. it came to that point where she came to

  82. her dad and said can I go out with my

  83. friends this weekend and spend the night

  84. with them out at this

  85. place and he began interrogating her you

  86. know much to her chag grin and she was

  87. perplexed he started asking her things

  88. like who are you going with who else is

  89. going to be there will there be boys

  90. there who's

  91. chaperoning where else are you going to

  92. be what are you going to be doing who's

  93. going to be driving all of those things

  94. that you know dads are thinking well

  95. yeah obviously but his daughter was

  96. perplexed like why why are you

  97. interrogating me why don't you just

  98. trust me and he said the most valuable

  99. thing that I have that I could loan to

  100. someone is my car

  101. and if someone asked to take my car for

  102. the

  103. weekend I would ask him all kinds of

  104. questions about where are they going

  105. what are they going to do who's going to

  106. be with them when are they bringing it

  107. back that's the most valuable thing I

  108. have and I would interrogate someone and

  109. probably wouldn't let him take it how

  110. much more am I going to be concerned

  111. about people taking you to be with them

  112. for the weekend you are my treasure you

  113. are so much more Val valuable than

  114. anything that I have I don't know if she

  115. really accepted that but I

  116. do and I think that is true for how God

  117. values each and every one of

  118. us you know we think of the things in

  119. this world that have so much value that

  120. God has created and wouldn't we like to

  121. have some of this or

  122. that but the most valuable

  123. thing is each and every person

  124. who is made in God's image and likeness

  125. and each and every person who is made in

  126. His image and likeness is a person for

  127. whom Christ

  128. died and so to know the value of each

  129. and every person we

  130. look not to the things of this world not

  131. even to their own characteristics not

  132. even to what they've done or haven't

  133. done we will confess in a little while

  134. falling short on both of

  135. those to know the value of each person

  136. in God's eyes which for us is the true

  137. value we look to the Cross we look to

  138. Jesus Christ

  139. crucified there on the cross is the

  140. payment for each and every person's soul

  141. yes for this all the people who have

  142. been created collectively but also for

  143. each and everyone on his or her own God

  144. is

  145. determined your value and my value

  146. individually as worth the cost of

  147. sacrificing his son on the cross that's

  148. the payment for each one of us in fact

  149. this is what Paul emphasizes in his

  150. letter to First

  151. Corinthians in chapter 6: 19- 20 Paul

  152. says do you not know that your body is a

  153. temple of the Holy Spirit within

  154. you whom you have from God you are not

  155. your own for you were bought with a

  156. price so glorify God in your

  157. body Paul is emphasizing the value of

  158. each person twofold one is that the

  159. person was bought with a

  160. price and he says later in 1 Corinthians

  161. in chapter 7: 23 that that

  162. price has freed us from becoming slaves

  163. we are

  164. redeemed from slavery by the price with

  165. which we were bought and that

  166. price with which we were bought is

  167. Christ crucified he has purchased us or

  168. redeemed us for God and Paul also says

  169. your body is a temple of the Holy

  170. Spirit another way to emphasize the

  171. value of each and every person not only

  172. purchased for God but filled with God if

  173. you haven't done this I encourage you to

  174. read in the Old Testament about the

  175. details of Solomon's

  176. Temple that he that he created for

  177. God the details of it are Exquisite and

  178. they can seem tiresome as you're reading

  179. it but read the details and really

  180. imagine what that Temple looked like and

  181. would have felt like imagine a Nave like

  182. this except instead of Windows and

  183. painted walls

  184. it is all covered with

  185. gold the

  186. walls the doors the accouterments all

  187. covered with pure

  188. gold the statues of the Angels being

  189. solid gold and in that in that Nave the

  190. the light would be from the golden

  191. candles that are lit

  192. continually imagine that pure gold

  193. everywhere shining reflecting the

  194. light God commissioned Solomon to create

  195. this as the only kind of structure on

  196. Earth that as much as possible could be

  197. created to be worthy for the presence of

  198. God solid

  199. gold artistic designs on the walls in

  200. Gold beautifully crafted miraculously

  201. put

  202. together that that's the only place the

  203. only kind of structure in which God

  204. would

  205. dwell except for you Paul says do you

  206. not know that you your body is a temple

  207. of the Holy

  208. Spirit and you are of Greater worth than

  209. the gold which made the temple such an

  210. Exquisite beautiful place God dwells in

  211. you that's how much he values

  212. you and it is the blood of Christ that

  213. not only purchased you for God but

  214. cleansed you and made you a worthy

  215. vessel for the Holy

  216. Spirit and as I said on the evening

  217. during the evening service on Christmas

  218. Eve that three truths we can know that

  219. are made clear through the Incarnation

  220. and birth of Christ is that God Made You

  221. In His Image and likeness and he loves

  222. you and that Jesus came to save you and

  223. to die on the cross because he loves you

  224. and that the Holy Spirit of the father

  225. and the son is present to make known to

  226. you salvation

  227. and to pour the love of God into your

  228. hearts because he loves

  229. you that is your worth in God's

  230. eyes the value of his son the value of

  231. making his home in you the value of

  232. coming to you and constantly wooing you

  233. with his goodness and Grace that you

  234. might receive him into your life that he

  235. might come and live in

  236. you Peter writes in 1 Peter 1:8

    1 Peter 1:8

  237. you were ransomed from the feudal ways

  238. inherited from your forefathers not with

  239. perishable things such as silver or gold

  240. but with the precious blood of Christ

  241. like that of a lamb without blemish or

  242. spot people are bought bought and sold

  243. used discarded based on their value in

  244. silver or gold and you would think that

  245. man there's got to be at least a certain

  246. amount of silver or gold that would

  247. equal my

  248. worth that if someone would offer my

  249. family we will give you this much gold

  250. if you give us him

  251. like you know depending on what day it

  252. is you would think there's a certain

  253. amount high or

  254. low but all of that is cheap in God's

  255. eyes compared to the true worth of you

  256. you weren't bought you could not be

  257. bought with silver or gold in God's eyes

  258. your sins could not be cleansed away and

  259. forgiven with silver or gold you could

  260. not be made a worthy vessel for the holy

  261. spirit with silver or gold and no no one

  262. else can either you are of infinite

  263. value more than the most valuable

  264. Treasures of creation you were bought

  265. and purchased by the Son of God who has

  266. no beginning or end who is one with the

  267. father

  268. he died to purchase you for

  269. God one of my favorite books and

  270. probably the longest book I've read is

  271. Lay Miser all by Victor Hugo written in

  272. the 1860s and um I first became familiar

  273. with the musical which I love and then

  274. read the book and in that book is

  275. probably one of the best Christian

  276. characters who presents a true image of

  277. Christ that I think it may be in

  278. literature in fiction and it's the

  279. bishop Bishop that the main character

  280. Jean valan encounters early in the book

  281. or early on in the musical Jean valan is

  282. a man living in France who is in prison

  283. for stealing a mouthful of bread and

  284. then he gets about 15 years added on to

  285. that so he's a prisoner they were slaves

  286. for 19 years he's released on parole and

  287. he immediately goes out and he steals

  288. some fruit from an orchard and then he's

  289. taken in by a Christian

  290. Bishop to spend the night at his house

  291. but instead of receiving that graciously

  292. Jean valan knocks him in the head grabs

  293. a bunch of silver stuff and runs off and

  294. he's apprehended by the police who of

  295. course assumed that he stole these

  296. silver items from the bishop they take

  297. him back to The Bishop's house and when

  298. confronted with this man that he

  299. welcomed into his house who stole from

  300. him and now is back

  301. rather than condemn him the bishop said

  302. to the police yes I gave him this silver

  303. I gave him these

  304. treasures and the the police release him

  305. they go

  306. away and if you know the musical you

  307. know how the song goes but the bishop

  308. confronts Jean

  309. valan not only giving him additional

  310. candlesticks to bless him but he says

  311. this and this is from the song I'm not

  312. going to sing it but I'll read

  313. it but remember this my brother not

  314. slave not prisoner my brother see in

  315. this some higher plan you must use this

  316. precious silver to become an honest man

  317. by the witness of the martyrs by the

  318. passion in the blood God has raised you

  319. out of Darkness I have bought your soul

  320. for God now now the bishop knows that it

  321. is Jesus who bought Jean Val Jan's soul

  322. but he is trying to emphasize and

  323. reiterate the value of this man who is a

  324. slave who saw himself as a prisoner who

  325. saw himself as a dog that he was worth

  326. more he says I've bought your soul for

  327. God change repent turn to God and if you

  328. know the story and the musical the next

  329. scene is Jean valan having this epiphany

  330. starting a new life and it goes from

  331. there a story of

  332. redemption the text that we read from

  333. Isaiah is the prophet speaking the words

  334. of God

  335. and he says this for Zion's sake Zion

  336. being Jerusalem being the place of the

  337. people of God for Zion's sake I will not

  338. keep silent and for Jerusalem's sake I

  339. will not be quiet until her

  340. righteousness Goes Forth as brightness

  341. and her salvation as a burning

  342. torch he will not keep silent until he

  343. sees God's purposes fulfilled in the

  344. people of God until he sees the people

  345. of God experience God's salvation and

  346. live in righteousness until what he says

  347. in verse two the Nations shall see your

  348. righteousness and all the kings your

  349. glory and you shall be called by a new

  350. name that the mouth of the Lord will

  351. give he will not be silent until he sees

  352. God's truth manifest in people's lives

  353. as they start living for God and by God

  354. and with God as the people God created

  355. him to

  356. be he goes on in verse three you shall

  357. be a crown of Beauty in the hand of the

  358. Lord a royal diadem in the hand of your

  359. God how much more should we not be

  360. silent about the value of each and every

  361. life until we see people who are living

  362. against God away from God without God

  363. become the people that God called them

  364. to be we must not keep silence declaring

  365. that each and every person is made in

  366. the image of God and is one for whom

  367. Christ died and is one to whom the Holy

  368. Spirit has come to show him or her the

  369. love of God that he or she might be

  370. saved and that God might receive what

  371. Jesus Paid for on the

  372. cross many of you know

  373. have heard or seen the video of our

  374. friend and member of the church Dirk

  375. Hardison who was assaulted about a week

  376. and a half ago maybe just a week ago at

  377. his front door on Price Street as he

  378. opened the door to two guys who he

  379. thought were Amazon delivery man and

  380. they proceeded to demand money and then

  381. hit him on the head a hammer with a

  382. hammer enough times to require 13

  383. Staples and stitches in his hands Dirk

  384. asked me to make sure that all of you

  385. know not to open your door to just

  386. anyone be sure who it

  387. is he's also thankful that he's doing

  388. well he's recovered his life was

  389. valuable and precious in God's sight

  390. although to these two guys who came to

  391. the door his life was worth

  392. nothing his life was worth whatever

  393. little cash they could get from

  394. him and too much that is the attitude

  395. and behavior of people in this world

  396. we're only concerned about how someone

  397. can serve our self interest however that

  398. may

  399. be and I know that in preparing for this

  400. sermon examining through my life I

  401. looked at how I have treated People

  402. based on entirely on my

  403. self-interest and I have to repent and

  404. ask God to forgive me and to transform

  405. me in church I know that it's easy to

  406. avoid confronting our guilt confronting

  407. our

  408. actions that have lessened someone's

  409. value because it's difficult we can

  410. experience shame and

  411. condemnation but we have to confront

  412. these areas of our own

  413. life how have we treated

  414. people less with less than the value

  415. that God treats them there's a story in

  416. the Old Testament it is one of the most

  417. amazing stories to me when I read the

  418. Bible and I just happened to read it

  419. recently and again like I can't believe

  420. this there was a good King pretty good

  421. Hezekiah king of Judah around 700s BC

  422. his son named Manasseh was not so good

  423. when he was 12 years old he became king

  424. that's never a good

  425. idea he proceeded to do everything I

  426. think possible that he could do wrong

  427. like he did something of everything bad

  428. that all the previous Kings did he

  429. worshiped the false gods the Demons of

  430. the day Baal ashth not only that he set

  431. up altars to these false gods in the

  432. very temple of

  433. God he worshiped these false gods

  434. everywhere he led the people of

  435. Judah to worship these false gods

  436. everywhere and then he finally sunk to

  437. the lowest of

  438. Lowe's not only building altars to all

  439. the hosts of Heaven in the courts of the

  440. house of the

  441. Lord in 2 Chronicles verse 33 beginning

  442. in verse 6 it says he burned his sons as

  443. an offering in the Valley of the son of

  444. Hanam and used fortune telling and Omens

  445. and sorcery and dealt with mediums and

  446. with

  447. necromancers he did much evil in the

  448. sight of the Lord provoking him to anger

  449. that's pretty much the worst that's the

  450. lowest of the lows for the kings of

  451. Judah he burned his sons in the fire he

  452. sought

  453. necromancers it doesn't get much worse

  454. than that you know the equivalent of

  455. burning suns in the fire for us today

  456. would be abortion from conception to

  457. birth it could be selling children

  458. abusing

  459. children all of

  460. that but we treat people like that

  461. throughout the end of their life not

  462. only can slaves be bought or sold many

  463. of you like me probably know someone who

  464. lost their life because they bought a

  465. pill for $10 or $20 off the street that

  466. had fentanyl in

  467. it imagine that someone willing to make

  468. 10 or

  469. $20 and take someone's

  470. life at the end of

  471. life uh Father Brian talked about this

  472. in Canada in in Sunday school how can

  473. has assisted suicide and if you go in

  474. with certain ailments that may be the

  475. recommendation physician assisted

  476. suicide it's only a few

  477. hundred that's the value of someone's

  478. life this evil King manasse despite all

  479. the evil that he

  480. did God sent him off to Exile in Chains

  481. as punishment he went to Babylon and in

  482. verse 12 it says this when he was in

  483. distress he intreated the favor of the

  484. Lord his God and humbled himself greatly

  485. before the god of his

  486. fathers do you wonder what happens next

  487. if you haven't read this awful King

  488. awful

  489. person he called upon the name of the

  490. Lord in his prison in his

  491. distress did God punish him and kill him

  492. and say no way sucker you had your

  493. chance he prayed to God and God was

  494. moved by his intreaty and heard his plea

  495. and brought him home again to Jerusalem

  496. and into his kingdom made him King

  497. again and Manasseh knew that the Lord

  498. was God it says and he led Judah to

  499. Worship the Lord he repented and he led

  500. them away from their idols and to

  501. Worship the

  502. Lord no matter how

  503. you have undervalued people in your life

  504. no matter what you've been a part of it

  505. could be in Deeds or

  506. words God

  507. forgives don't repress it don't push

  508. down there don't experience shame that

  509. is not from God or condemnation that is

  510. not from God bring it into the light and

  511. receive forgiveness for how you have not

  512. loved your brother or sister as

  513. yourself how you've not done what you

  514. should have done or done what you should

  515. not have

  516. done whether it's being involved in

  517. abortion whether it's being involved in

  518. abuse whether it's being involved in

  519. mistreating siblings mothers fathers

  520. friends

  521. the person on the street just confess

  522. it call upon the name of the Lord and

  523. entreat him and he will hear

  524. you and when we think about those who

  525. are doing evil the two guys that

  526. assaulted Durk we want Justice without a

  527. doubt we want Justice

  528. accountability but if God forgave King

  529. Manasseh and he forgave me and you he'll

  530. forgive those guys too their lives are

  531. of value in God's sight as is each and

  532. every person's and wouldn't it be Wonder

  533. to start if we started seeing wouldn't

  534. it be wonderful we started seeing such

  535. people turn their lives to
