  1. let us

  2. pray Lord just as Ezra and

  3. Nehemiah

  4. heard the cries of the people longing to

  5. hear your word longing to listen to your

  6. law May our hearts Lord long for your

  7. word long to receive your gospel your

  8. good news give us ears to hear hearts

  9. and mind ready to Proclaim and to

  10. receive the good news that you've given

  11. to us and may my speech and message not

  12. be plausible words of wisdom but a

  13. demonstration of the spirit and of power

  14. so that indeed we would receive this

  15. gospel not based on human wisdom but on

  16. the power of

  17. God

  18. Amen may be

  19. seated today in Our Gospel reading Luke

  20. recounts Jesus's first

  21. sermon he has been

  22. baptized uh in the River Jordan by John

  23. he has spent time in the wilderness and

  24. driven by the spirit of God Jesus

  25. returns to his hometown to Nazareth

  26. returns to his home synagogue and

  27. preaches his first sermon of his

  28. ministry reading this text this week

  29. week reminded me of my first sermon 12

  30. years ago believe it or not in a small

  31. tiny Church in uh Western North

  32. Carolina I remember I was so

  33. afraid of saying something

  34. stupid or saying something wrong and so

  35. I tried to be as conventional as

  36. possible to not ruffle any

  37. feathers that is not what Jesus

  38. does Jesus goes into his home synagogue

  39. of Nazareth filled with the spirit and

  40. he speaks with power with authority he

  41. takes the scroll of the prophet Isaiah

  42. he opens it up and he reads it and then

  43. he

  44. declares something

  45. unbelievable that

  46. today this scripture has been fulfilled

  47. in your hearing can you

  48. imagine put yourself in that

  49. synagogue you saw the little boy Jesus

  50. grow up come up to the front go

  51. downstairs to little church this little

  52. boy the son of Joseph and

  53. Mary is now saying he is the Fulfillment

  54. of the

  55. Prophet I would have been shocked I

  56. wouldn't have believed

  57. him so what does it mean how can Jesus

  58. say this what does this mean for us

  59. today in order to

  60. understand the shocking nature the truth

  61. revealed in Jesus's first sermon we have

  62. to spend some time in the prophet Isaiah

  63. Isaiah 61 open your Bibles with me to

  64. Isaiah chapter 61 this was Jesus's

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  65. preaching

  66. text let's put it in context the book of

  67. Isaiah is the largest book of Prophecy

  68. in

  69. Scripture it was written uh during the

  70. fall of uh Judah of God's people uh

  71. being hauled off uh into Exile Isaiah is

  72. witnessing the last days of the

  73. Kingdom immediately before uh chapter 61

  74. we have a number of famous servant songs

  75. where Isaiah speaks about the suffering

  76. servant set apart um to suffer on behalf

  77. of God's people we know of course that

  78. this uh prophecy points us to Jesus in

  79. chapter 60 though Isaiah shifts his

  80. vision and looks towards the Fulfillment

  81. the return of God's people their

  82. Redemption from

  83. Exile Isaiah foresees a day when Israel

  84. will be restored they will return from

  85. Babylon and they will shine with the

  86. glory of God and Isaiah 61 explains how

  87. look with me at verse one it begins

  88. the spirit of the Lord is upon me

  89. because he has anointed me to bring good

  90. news to the

  91. poor Israel's restoration will come

  92. about through the Lord's anointed

  93. through the Messiah that's the word

  94. that's used here God will place his

  95. Spirit upon his chosen one and he will

  96. commission him to bring about a mission

  97. and his mission is to bring good news to

  98. the poor to the pressed to those who

  99. suffer the messiah's mission is one of

  100. Liberation and that has two aspects on

  101. one hand it is freedom for those who are

  102. enslaved by the World the Flesh and the

  103. Devil by the powers and principalities

  104. at work in our world but it's not just

  105. Freedom it's also

  106. restoration the Messiah will restore

  107. what has been lost by sin and

  108. death he goes first to those in greatest

  109. need to the poor but this freedom and

  110. restoration will extend to the whole

  111. earth to everyone who is oppressed in

  112. every

  113. way verse two continues that this

  114. Messiah will proclaim the year of the

  115. Lord's favor and the day of Vengeance of

  116. our God this phrase year of the Lord's

  117. favor it's a technical term Isaiah is

  118. signaling to Israel to look back to the

  119. law specifically to look back to

  120. Leviticus CH

  121. 25 there Israel was commanded to observe

  122. Jubilee Jubilee was the Sabbath year you

  123. all know the Sabbath the Commandment of

  124. the Lord to rest on the seventh day

  125. mirroring his own

  126. creation but it wasn't just a weekly

  127. phenomenon and Leviticus 20 uh 25 the

  128. Lord commands that every seventh year

  129. would be a jubilee year and every seven

  130. times seven years would be a great

  131. Jubilee year and every Jubilee

  132. year it would

  133. be debt

  134. forgiveness all indebtedness economic

  135. social familial would be forgiven can

  136. you imagine that'd be

  137. nice and also emancipation slaves

  138. everyone who is enslaved would be set

  139. free every seven years this was part of

  140. Israel's

  141. law this kind of radical debt

  142. forgiveness and emancipation is not

  143. unheard of in the ancient world we know

  144. that the Babylonian Kings often began

  145. their reign with debt forgiveness and

  146. emancipation but this was entirely based

  147. on the will and the whims of the king it

  148. was dependent on his Mercy his

  149. generosity

  150. a bit like presidents who are coming

  151. into office and leaving office granting

  152. pardons it's the same kind of idea

  153. here but Israel's King the true king of

  154. the whole world the lord he mandated in

  155. his law that every seventh year there

  156. would be Jubilee every seventh year

  157. there would be freedom and restoration

  158. to the indebted and to the

  159. enslaved because the Lord the god of

  160. Israel is a god of

  161. Mercy he Longs and loves to show Mercy

  162. to those who are oppressed and he

  163. commanded his people to do

  164. likewise but that's not all here in

  165. Isaiah 61 there's

  166. a future oriented Eternal component to

  167. Isaiah's prophecy it's not just

  168. foreseeing the messiah's coming in time

  169. it's also fores seeeing his final coming

  170. his eternal coming

  171. Isaiah foresees a day of Eternal

  172. Jubilee a time when for all eternity all

  173. debts are forgiven all slaves

  174. emancipated for all for good

  175. finally eternally free from the powers

  176. that oppress US economic social

  177. political the World the Flesh and the

  178. devil that true Freedom true restoration

  179. that's what Isaiah

  180. foresees and now we can understand the

  181. shocking claim of Jesus's first sermon

  182. here in Luke

  183. 4 Jesus Takes the scroll he reads Isaiah

  184. 61 he rolls it back I love Luke's

  185. account of this he hands it back to the

  186. attendant and All Eyes Are Fixed On

  187. Jesus what is he going to say about this

  188. text today this scripture has been

  189. fulfilled in your

  190. hearing not was fulfilled a long time

  191. ago not will be fulfilled one day right

  192. now here in my presence in my preaching

  193. is

  194. Jubilee He is claiming to be the Lord's

  195. anointed the one who will usher in the

  196. final Eternal Jubilee that through his

  197. presence all debts are forgiven all

  198. slaves are free

  199. now as we can understand this was

  200. difficult for the people in the

  201. synagogue to hear uh Luke continues that

  202. in fact they reject him because what he

  203. was saying seemed demonstrably untrue I

  204. mean there were still people enslaved

  205. there were still people oppressed

  206. the Romans were still there oppressing

  207. God's

  208. people so is Jesus a

  209. liar or is he speaking about something

  210. different a spiritual reality that we

  211. cannot see that has impact on the

  212. material world that we do

  213. see Jesus is rejected here friends

  214. because his listeners were hearing and

  215. seeing him from a worldly perspective

  216. Jesus is not simply focused on material

  217. realities economic political social he's

  218. talking about a spiritual Kingdom a

  219. kingdom of heaven that is not of this

  220. world a kingdom that is within us as

  221. Luke will later

  222. say humans can only find true material

  223. economic and social Freedom when they

  224. experience the spiritual freedom and

  225. restoration that comes in the kingdom of

  226. God and this Eternal Eternal Jubilee it

  227. comes through the presence of Jesus so

  228. indeed in their hearing the possibility

  229. for material Freedom was there but Jesus

  230. begins not with what we can see but what

  231. God sees he begins with the heart he

  232. begins with the transformation the

  233. freedom the restoration that must happen

  234. within us if the world is to be changed

  235. and this friends is good news

  236. because all of us are oppressed in a

  237. variety of ways we're materially

  238. oppressed by the wealthy socially

  239. oppressed by the powerful our lives are

  240. deeply affected by the corruption and

  241. failure of our leaders and this is just

  242. scratching the surface remember Jesus is

  243. really talking about here the Unseen

  244. realities that we are all mentally and

  245. emotionally

  246. oppressed haunted by the failures of our

  247. past our fears of the future by our

  248. destructive and unhealthy habits and

  249. attitudes but worse of all we are all

  250. spiritually

  251. oppressed by a enemy that is not of This

  252. World by our sinful thoughts and vicious

  253. behaviors by the lies and temptations of

  254. the Devil by our own

  255. shame all of us need freedom and

  256. restoration and Jesus comes to set us

  257. free to give us Eternal Jubilee now

  258. freeing us from everything that

  259. oppresses

  260. us there's aspects of this freedom and

  261. restoration that are instantaneous maybe

  262. some of you can attest to that in your

  263. life most of it though is gradual it

  264. happens over time as the holy spirit is

  265. at work in us sanctifying

  266. us as Paul writes in Colossians

  267. 1 he has delivered us from the domain of

  268. Darkness and transferred us to the

  269. kingdom of his beloved

  270. Son life in the kingdom of God is

  271. Jubilee life it's life of freedom and

  272. restoration because life in the kingdom

  273. is life in the presence of

  274. Jesus and this friends is why we need

  275. the

  276. church if you want Eternal Jubilee the

  277. only place to find it is in the presence

  278. of Jesus and where did Jesus promise to

  279. be where two or three are gathered in

  280. his word preached in his sacraments

  281. administered Jesus is present now

  282. bringing forth Jubilee in his body and

  283. that's indeed what Paul is talking about

  284. in our reading from 1 Corinthians 12

  285. turn with me in your Bibles to that

  286. passage the lectionary today is

  287. brilliant pairing 1 Corinthians 12 with

  288. Luke

  289. 4 as Paul explains here the church is

  290. the body of Christ on Earth it's the

  291. temple where the Holy Spirit dwells in

  292. the hearts of his people the church is

  293. the place where we encounter the

  294. presence of Jesus

  295. now verse 13 for in one Spirit we were

  296. all baptized into one body Jews or

  297. Greeks slaves or free all were made to

  298. drink of the one spirit

  299. it is through baptism we are made

  300. members of this body we're given a share

  301. of the spirit of God and as Paul writes

  302. in second Corinthians where the spirit

  303. of the Lord is there is

  304. freedom but Paul goes on to explain very

  305. practically what freedom in Christ looks

  306. like verse

  307. 14 for the body does not consist in one

  308. member but of

  309. many the if the foot should say because

  310. I'm not a hand I do not belong to the

  311. body that would not make it any less

  312. part of the body and if the ear should

  313. say because I am not the eye I do not

  314. belong to the body that would not make

  315. it any less part of the body if the

  316. whole body were an eye where would the

  317. sense of hearing be if the whole body

  318. were an ear where would be the sense of

  319. smell but as it is God arranged the

  320. members in the body each one of them as

  321. he

  322. chose so what Paul is doing here he's

  323. comparing the church Community to the

  324. body of Christ that each of us play a

  325. different role in that body because we

  326. are all members of that body as he

  327. explains earlier on Christ is the head

  328. he's the one commanding giving

  329. Life Giving freedom and restoration to

  330. all of us this kind of language was not

  331. unique in the ancient world the Romans

  332. used it all the time in fact Livy the

  333. great Roman Roman historian recounts a

  334. Roman Senator uh during a Revolt

  335. explaining that what was happening was

  336. that the stomach was revolting against

  337. the rest of the

  338. body Rome understood itself as a body

  339. politic in that way the difference is

  340. how the language is used the Romans they

  341. always use the body metaphor to

  342. subjugate to oppress you are the feet

  343. you are the stomach I am the head the

  344. elites the emperor you need to obey me

  345. that's what true order looks like but

  346. Paul Paul's doing something very

  347. different here he's using that metaphor

  348. turning it around verse

  349. 21 the eye cannot say to the hand I have

  350. no need of you nor again the head of the

  351. feet I have no need of you on the

  352. contrary the parts of the body that seem

  353. to be weaker are indispensable

  354. pagans never say that uh and on those

  355. parts of the body that we think less

  356. honorable we bestow greater honor in our

  357. unpresentable parts are treated with

  358. greater

  359. modesty so unlike Pagan Society the

  360. society the church the body of Christ is

  361. a society of

  362. interdependence of

  363. mutuality of us relying on each other

  364. supporting one another needing one

  365. another each part of the body has its

  366. own function to play none are

  367. interchangeable or

  368. replaceable this

  369. vision of freedom freedom in the

  370. body it's so different than the way we

  371. Americans think about

  372. freedom because for Americans right

  373. freedom is

  374. Independence it's freedom from other

  375. people right we don't want to be

  376. dependent on other people we want to be

  377. independent that's not the vision of

  378. Christian Freedom here Paul offers

  379. us in the presence of Christ true

  380. freedom and restoration is

  381. interdependence not Independence it's

  382. relying on one another belonging to each

  383. other Paul continues in verse

  384. 25 that there may be no division in the

  385. body but that the members May have the

  386. same care for one another if one member

  387. suffers all suffer together if one

  388. member is honored all Rejoice

  389. together to be free in the body of

  390. Christ is a freedom for it's a freedom

  391. with it's a freedom to care a freedom to

  392. suffer not a freedom from not

  393. independent of one another that's the

  394. part of us that needs to be healed

  395. that independent selfish streak that

  396. thinks we're better than everyone

  397. else and God heals that in his presence

  398. in his body as we care for one another

  399. as we depend on each

  400. other life in the body of Christ friends

  401. is eternal

  402. Jubilee it's where we find Freedom and

  403. restoration now but it's only there if

  404. we care for one another depend on each

  405. other

  406. other or at least it should

  407. be the sad truth is that for many of us

  408. this is not our personal experience of

  409. the church it's not a place of care but

  410. a place of

  411. pain at its best the church is called to

  412. be a place where the presence of Jesus

  413. brings about freedom and restoration to

  414. the

  415. members but we must

  416. remember that each one of us is also a

  417. sinner

  418. each one of us is in a struggle Against

  419. the World the Flesh and the devil and

  420. from time to time we will

  421. fail spoiler alert Christians hurt each

  422. other people in the church hurt each

  423. other and this should not be a surprise

  424. to us the good news friends is that God

  425. chooses to use the church to use our

  426. relationships with one another to use

  427. our pain and our hurt to bring bring

  428. about freedom and restoration he uses

  429. the church despite our

  430. failures for it's within the church that

  431. the messiah's Eternal Jubilee is

  432. embodied I believe friends this is what

  433. we are called to be here at Christ

  434. Church anglian an interdependent

  435. community that cares for one another and

  436. suffers together but before we can do

  437. this we must first receive the Lord's

  438. freedom and restor ation for

  439. ourselves God wants you to be free of

  440. whatever is oppressing

  441. you do you know that he's already set

  442. you free do you believe that restoration

  443. is possible today not your sins in

  444. general but whatever you're going

  445. through right

  446. now the assaults of the world flesh the

  447. devil the thoughts that plague us shame

  448. condemnation anxiety fear I am not

  449. worthy I am

  450. unlovable I am not good enough I'm a

  451. failure but the most dangerous thought

  452. of all the thought that destroys the

  453. church that is the cause of every

  454. Scandal is the thought of

  455. self-sufficiency the thought of

  456. Independence that I can do this on my

  457. own that I don't need

  458. you that all of my my successes are my

  459. own I care for who I want to care for I

  460. choose I don't

  461. obey listen again to the words of Jesus

  462. to his first sermon the spirit of the

  463. Lord is upon me he's anointed me to

  464. Proclaim good news to the poor to

  465. Proclaim Liberty to the captives the

  466. recovery of the sight of the blind to

  467. set at Liberty those who are oppressed

  468. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor

  469. friends we must reject the lies of this

  470. world the lies in our own head the

  471. condemnation and instead embrace the

  472. truth that in the presence of Christ

  473. here in this body Freedom

  474. restoration is possible

  475. amen and only when we receive that for

  476. ourselves can we become a people who

  477. care for one another who love God and

  478. neighbor who can participate in the

  479. freeing and restoration of all

  480. things I would love us to be a place to

  481. be known in this town as a place where

  482. there is eternal Jubilee now for anyone

  483. who's

  484. struggling all we need to do is believe

  485. and ask Jesus free me restore

  486. me that is a dangerous prayer

  487. because in order for him to do that he

  488. has to Route out all that is Unholy

  489. within us he has to cleanse us and

  490. purify

  491. us if you're struggling to experience

  492. this Freedom or Restoration in your life

  493. I would encourage you to reach out to to

  494. Father Craig or to myself we would love

  495. to pray for you to help you understand

  496. what Christ has done for you in a deeper

  497. way all of us are on this journey of

  498. Faith whereby we're experiencing more

  499. and more

  500. Jubilee but all of us from time to time

  501. need prayer and counsel and Direction so

  502. please reach

  503. out the good news though is that when

  504. all of us are walking and living in

  505. God's Jubilee the spirit will give us

  506. the grace to care for one

  507. another he will make us a light for the

  508. world and agent of freedom and

  509. restoration

  510. today in the name of the father and the

  511. son son and the holy spirit amen
