  1. let us

  2. pray Lord may my speech and my message

  3. not be plausible words of wisdom but a

  4. demonstration of the spirit and of power

  5. so our faith may not rest in the wisdom

  6. of men but in the power of the Living

  7. God we ask this in the name of the

  8. father and the son and the holy spirit

  9. amen you may be seated

  10. I don't know about you but I love going

  11. to the

  12. movies I love uh getting a big thing of

  13. popcorn and like a big soda and some

  14. Milk

  15. Duds and uh sitting down and watching a

  16. good movie it's not something I get to

  17. do very often because I have three kids

  18. and that's not necessarily what I want

  19. to spend my babysitting money on but

  20. when we get to go and see a movie I love

  21. it and the truth is almost more than the

  22. movie the thing I really

  23. love are the Coming Attractions the

  24. trailers I love getting there early and

  25. seeing the trailers and what's to come I

  26. love it so much that often I'll go home

  27. and I'll watch the trailer Again on

  28. YouTube you know a good trailer is a

  29. thing of beauty it reveals just enough

  30. of the plot to get you interested but it

  31. holds back some of the best mysteries

  32. for for the actual film I mean there's

  33. nothing worse than a trailer that gives

  34. away all the good stuff right at

  35. first this morning as we stand on the

  36. cusp of the season of

  37. Lent the lectionary gives us a trailer a

  38. coming attractions of the things to come

  39. in the story of the

  40. Transfiguration this story hints at the

  41. mysteries of Holy Week the glory of

  42. Jesus that we will soon see in in 40

  43. days or so and gives us motivation for

  44. the coming lent and fast but it also

  45. hides away some of the best parts you'll

  46. have to stay with us to experience them

  47. together open your Bibles with me to uh

  48. Luke chapter 9 Our Gospel

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  49. reading The Story begins in Luke 9:

  50. 28 we're told that Jesus Took with him

  51. Peter James and John his three best

  52. friends and they went up a mountain to

  53. pray and as he was

  54. praying the appearance of Jesus's face

  55. was

  56. altered and his clothing became dazzling

  57. white like Moses and Elijah before him

  58. Jesus goes up the mountain to meet with

  59. God this is very common practice in the

  60. ancient world Jesus wanted to be as near

  61. as possible to his heavenly father so he

  62. goes on the mountain to be closer to the

  63. father to commune with him climbing as

  64. high as possible but he doesn't go alone

  65. he brings with him his his three best

  66. friends his buddies Peter James and John

  67. and as they go up on the mountain and

  68. are praying together something amazing

  69. happens indeed as we just sang In Our

  70. Gospel hymn when when two or three three

  71. are gathered together in

  72. prayer God meets

  73. them this is completely different than

  74. what we expect I mean Jesus is

  75. transformed the glory that is always

  76. present hidden behind his Humanity now

  77. shines forth on the Holy Mountain he is

  78. altered his disciples recognize him and

  79. yet it is someone different than him

  80. it's Jesus and yet he's completely

  81. different than the Jesus that they know

  82. for the early church this was a

  83. revelation of Jesus's

  84. Divinity the story was evidence used at

  85. the Council of NAA for Jesus's full

  86. humanity and full Divinity United

  87. together in the person of Christ indeed

  88. as Jesus taught in the Gospel of John if

  89. you see me you see the father I and the

  90. father are

  91. one Jesus is not less than God but the

  92. fullness of God

  93. the god of Israel made flesh his

  94. divinity is always there and now on the

  95. Holy Mountain we see him as he really is

  96. glorious transfigured

  97. transformed but more than that we also

  98. see the glory of our

  99. Humanity the Creator and the creature

  100. are not opposed to one another as we may

  101. often think but indeed the Creator longs

  102. to give his glory to his creatures we

  103. creatures were made for the glory of God

  104. we see this in verse 30 and behold two

  105. men were talking with Jesus on that

  106. mountain Moses and

  107. Elijah the presence of Moses and Elijah

  108. is significant for three reasons first

  109. they point us to the hope of the

  110. Resurrection from the dead for those who

  111. are in Christ death is not the end

  112. as Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4

  113. while our mortal bodies waste away in

  114. the grave our souls have only fallen

  115. asleep to be present with the Lord in

  116. what theologians call the intermediate

  117. state but this disembodied state with

  118. the Lord is not our

  119. destiny we're told that Moses and Elijah

  120. are there but we're not told how they're

  121. there they're not there in an embodied

  122. form they're there in a kind of

  123. spiritual form they long for the day

  124. that their bodies will be raised to dead

  125. and reunited with their souls in

  126. Resurrection and yet here by God's grace

  127. and power they are alive talking with

  128. their lord face to

  129. face both of these men secondly beheld

  130. the glory of God face to face Elijah in

  131. The Chariot of fire that took him into

  132. heaven and Moses as we heard just a few

  133. moments ago in our reading from Exodus

  134. when he went up Mount Si and beheld the

  135. glory of God and was given the law his

  136. face Shone with the brightness of Glory

  137. Moses did not encounter God and remain

  138. the same he was changed so changed in

  139. fact he had to wear a veil over his face

  140. to protect uh himself from the other

  141. Israelites who were terrified by his

  142. shining

  143. face however we might be tempted to

  144. think that the glory of God is opposed

  145. to the glory of humans we see in Moses

  146. and Elijah that indeed they are one they

  147. are destined for one another the third

  148. thing is that Moses and Elijah show us

  149. what a glorified human person looks

  150. like I mean the glory of Jesus we

  151. understand right he's fully God but

  152. Moses and Elijah there with the glory of

  153. God we humans were made for the glory of

  154. God that's our goal goal our end our

  155. destiny we all know this deep down even

  156. if we deny the existence of God because

  157. all of us strive to be seen to be known

  158. to be recognized by other people we want

  159. our accomplishments acknowledged and

  160. affirmed we aspire to Greatness in the

  161. work that God has given

  162. us this is good and right this is a

  163. striving for the glory that we are

  164. destined for the problem of course is

  165. that sin and death have Twisted this

  166. desire for Glory in on

  167. itself and instead of seeking

  168. Glory we are

  169. ambitious there's a difference friends

  170. between aspiration and ambition

  171. aspiration is about seeking to fulfill

  172. your call to the best of your ability we

  173. aspire to be good stewards of what God

  174. has given

  175. us but ambition is different ambition is

  176. about

  177. domination we selfishly seek the glory

  178. for ourselves to the exclusion of others

  179. it's a zero sum game for the ambitious

  180. person either I get the glory or they do

  181. we both can't have it and so I do

  182. whatever I can to outshine my

  183. neighbor we perceive others as a threat

  184. to our Glory aspiration is fueled by

  185. goodness there's more than enough

  186. goodness to go around if we all Aspire

  187. for the same thing but ambition is

  188. fueled by

  189. Pride the 17th century Puritan Thomas

  190. Brooks

  191. wrote ambition is a gilded misery a

  192. Secret poison a hidden plague the inur

  193. ER of Deceit the mother of hypocrisy the

  194. parent of Envy the original Vice The

  195. Moth of

  196. Holiness moth of Holiness I love that

  197. ambition eats up the sanctification in

  198. our lives it erodes our moral

  199. virtue any character or conviction that

  200. we may have will be consumed by our

  201. prideful ambition if we let it

  202. why am I bringing this up well it's

  203. because we see this ambition in Simon

  204. Peter look with me at verse

  205. 32 now Peter and those who were with him

  206. were heavy with

  207. sleep when they became fully awake they

  208. saw his glory and the two men who stood

  209. with

  210. him Peter sees the glory of Jesus he

  211. sees Moses and Elijah and he understands

  212. that he's missing out he needs to be up

  213. there with him somehow say take that

  214. glory for himself verse 33 as the men

  215. were parting from him Peter said to

  216. Jesus

  217. Master it is good that we are here

  218. aren't you glad I'm here Jesus don't you

  219. need me what would you have done without

  220. me let us make three tents one for you

  221. one for Moses and one for Elijah not

  222. knowing what he said Luke gives us a

  223. hint this is not a good thing Peter is

  224. asking Peter is moated by prideful

  225. ambition it is good that we are here

  226. that's the voice of ambition he's

  227. self-satisfied he's more focused on his

  228. opportunity to shine than on the glory

  229. of his Lord he offers to make tense for

  230. the transfigured Jesus and his guests

  231. which may seem like a humble Act of

  232. service but in fact he is striving for

  233. recognition indeed often prideful

  234. ambition masquerades as humble

  235. service we ingratiate ourselves to

  236. others becoming indispensable to them

  237. aren't you glad you have

  238. me but true

  239. humility true

  240. aspiration it serves without expecting

  241. anything in return regardless if we're

  242. acknowledged for it or

  243. not God the Father sees Peter's prideful

  244. ambition indeed this is not the first

  245. time in the gospels Peter has strove to

  246. be recognized and it will not be the

  247. last time and we hear in verse

  248. 34 the voice of the father as he was

  249. saying these things the father doesn't

  250. even let him finish he cuts Peter off

  251. the cloud came and overshadowed them and

  252. they were afraid as they entered the

  253. cloud and a voice came out of the cloud

  254. saying this is my son My Chosen One

  255. listen to him Peter let go of your

  256. selfish Ambitions of your vain conceits

  257. Focus only on the son The Chosen One

  258. listen to

  259. him and when the voice had spoken Jesus

  260. was found alone

  261. this is one of the few times that we

  262. hear the voice of the father in the

  263. gospels and every time we hear the voice

  264. of the father it's the same thing each

  265. time the father draws our attention to

  266. Jesus look at Jesus my son my beloved My

  267. Chosen pay attention to him don't look

  268. at yourself don't look at anyone else

  269. look only to Jesus

  270. and like Peter the sole focus of all our

  271. aspirations should be the glory of the

  272. son whatever you do however you spend

  273. your time whatever you've been called to

  274. do everything you Aspire for should be

  275. the glory of the son not your own

  276. Ambitions not your

  277. pride friends this is the main thread

  278. the main plot of the trans

  279. Transfiguration story The Glory of Jesus

  280. the vanity and ambition of Peter the

  281. call to focus on

  282. Jesus but like a good movie trailer this

  283. story hints at something else there's

  284. another thread here easily missed if

  285. you're not paying attention our collect

  286. for the week pointed it out if you were

  287. paying

  288. attention the story points to the

  289. ultimate means of glorification to our

  290. glorification and the glorification of

  291. the son we have to start again at the

  292. beginning verse 28 how does it

  293. start now about 8 days after these

  294. sayings Jesus Took with him and you got

  295. to ask what

  296. sayings and you got to go back to Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  297. chapter 9 just

  298. earlier just before this story Jesus

  299. teaches in verse 23 he said to all if

  300. anyone would come after me let him deny

  301. him himself take up his cross and follow

  302. me

  303. daily 8 days after these sayings this is

  304. no accident if you look at all of the

  305. gospels Matthew Mark Luke the ones that

  306. have a Transfiguration they're always

  307. preceded by the call to follow Jesus to

  308. the Cross there's always the teaching of

  309. self-denial and then the glory so Luke

  310. all the gospel writers they want us to

  311. read this story in the context of the

  312. teaching on self-denial and cross

  313. bearing there's another hint of the

  314. Cross here too in verse

  315. 31 Jesus is up on the mountain

  316. transfigured with Moses and

  317. Elijah and Luke tells us who appeared in

  318. glory and spoke of his departure which

  319. he was about to accomplish at

  320. Jerusalem and your Bible your few Bible

  321. may have a footnote like mine does that

  322. says Greek

  323. Exodus that's literally the word used

  324. here by

  325. Luke Jesus is talking with Moses and

  326. Elijah about his coming

  327. Exodus just as the god of Israel saved

  328. his people from slavery in Egypt passing

  329. through the Red Sea so will Jesus redeem

  330. all of us by passing through the passion

  331. and death of the cross

  332. this is what Moses and Elijah looked

  333. forward to what was shadowy revealed in

  334. their day now the glory of God is coming

  335. to fulfillment in the

  336. cross friends the cross is God's answer

  337. to our

  338. Ambitions Jesus means to crucify our

  339. selfish Ambitions and vain conceits in

  340. order to resurrect us as humble servants

  341. who only aspire to his glory to the

  342. glory of his kingdom and the way of the

  343. Cross is the way of self denial Luke

  344. says it differently than the other

  345. gospels let him deny himself take up his

  346. cross daily and follow

  347. me James says it this way in James 4:10

    James 4:10

  348. humble yourself in the sight of the Lord

  349. and He will lift you up but you know the

  350. opposite is true too right if you lift

  351. yourself up in the sight of the Lord he

  352. will humble

  353. you so I mean you got a choice God loves

  354. you he gives you some Freedom you can

  355. humble yourself or you can experience

  356. his humbling I don't know about you I'd

  357. rather humble myself right I'd rather

  358. take up that cross daily deny myself and

  359. follow Jesus that's the only thing that

  360. kills ambition in my heart

  361. heart why why why is the cross the means

  362. to True human

  363. Glory why did God choose to use this

  364. instrument of torture to bring about our

  365. transformation it's because the cross is

  366. the ultimate demonstration of

  367. love Jesus says in John 15 that no

  368. greater love has won than this than

  369. someone who lays down his life for his

  370. friends

  371. that's what the cross is the creator of

  372. the universe laying down his life

  373. demonstrating his friendship with

  374. us in 1 John chter 4 John writes who

  375. remember was there on that

  376. mountain God is

  377. love his love is glory and His glory is

  378. his love

  379. this is what Paul explains in our new

  380. testament reading from 1 Corinthians 13

  381. you can turn with me there now it was

  382. too good to pass this first Corinthians

  383. text up in no accident the lectionary

  384. puts it with the

  385. Transfiguration Paul is explaining that

  386. all Christians are called to follow

  387. Christ's example as we love God and love

  388. neighbor and practically speaking this

  389. looks like three

  390. things first we must value others more

  391. than our particular

  392. gifts we often forget that the 1

  393. Corinthians 13 passage on love happens

  394. in the context of this broader

  395. conversation Paul has about gifts we

  396. heard it in our reading God gives gifts

  397. to his church he calls people to

  398. different kinds of Ministries all these

  399. gifts are good they're for building up

  400. the body and yet lest we think our gifts

  401. are our Glory

  402. lest we use our gifts for our own

  403. Ambitions Paul reminds us that if we

  404. speak in the tongue of men's and Angels

  405. but have not love for noisy gong

  406. clanging symbol if I have prophetic

  407. powers and understand all Mysteries and

  408. have all knowledge and if I have all

  409. Faith as the move mountains but have not

  410. love I am

  411. nothing Paul is clear that we all have

  412. gifts are all to be used for the common

  413. good but more important than our gifts

  414. is the way we

  415. love for Christians the ends can never

  416. justify the

  417. means because the way we do something is

  418. just as important as the ends we seek to

  419. accomplish the way we treat others is

  420. even more important than our particular

  421. gifts and callings then our own

  422. convictions and our own

  423. knowledge without love it's all all

  424. nothing but secondly Paul explains

  425. that God wants to Bear spiritual fruit

  426. in us this is what love looks like he

  427. describes a number of different moral

  428. virtues in verse

  429. 4 love is patient love is kind love does

  430. not envy or boast is not arrogant or

  431. rude this is not dissimilar from some of

  432. Paul's other lists in his letters

  433. notably Galatians 5 where he talks about

  434. the fruit of the

  435. spirit these things are not things we do

  436. through our own power we learn to be

  437. patient and kind and to not envy and

  438. boast as we deny ourselves and take up

  439. our cross and follow Jesus as we mortify

  440. the flesh within us God builds in us and

  441. grows in us spiritual fruit

  442. this process is real there is good news

  443. people change you can change wherever

  444. you are whoever you want to be it is

  445. possible but transformation only comes

  446. through cross

  447. bearing it only comes through

  448. self-denial and following after Jesus as

  449. we do that God bears fruit in us but the

  450. cross must come first it's not about

  451. trying harder trying to be good but

  452. about being crucified with Christ

  453. letting go of our Ambitions our vanity

  454. and our pride as CS Lewis said it's not

  455. thinking less of ourselves but thinking

  456. of ourselves

  457. less this inward spiritual

  458. transformation through

  459. love makes it possible for the Third Way

  460. of practical love bearing with one

  461. another look with me at verse

  462. 5 Paul writes it does not insist in its

  463. own way it is not irritable or resentful

  464. it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but

  465. rejoices in the truth love bears all

  466. things believes all things hopes all

  467. things endures all

  468. things Love Never

  469. Ends the truth

  470. is to be honest for a

  471. moment you know we humans are really

  472. hard to love

  473. all of us have that one person in our

  474. lives you know might be annoying

  475. coworker or maybe a difficult family

  476. member or that neighbor or that person

  477. sitting on the Pew you know down the row

  478. from you whoever they are we are

  479. difficult to love try as we might and we

  480. try we can't change

  481. people only God changes Hearts we got to

  482. stop trying to change people

  483. people instead what love calls us to do

  484. is to bear with one

  485. another now this does not mean

  486. tolerating them or looking the other

  487. way love means refusing to be

  488. antagonized by the

  489. neighbor Carl Bart writes extensively

  490. about 1 Corinthians 13 in his church

  491. dogmatics he points out that Paul is not

  492. saying that we have no reason to be

  493. angry with her neighbor and he's not

  494. saying that a person who loves does not

  495. see the wrongs done to them what sets

  496. the lover apart is that they do not give

  497. in to anger they don't sit around

  498. dwelling on what people have done to

  499. them they don't keep a dossier on their

  500. neighbor the only way we can love like

  501. this is by following the teaching of

  502. Jesus and putting to death our own

  503. selfish desires

  504. because often the way we love people is

  505. we love them in a way that benefits us

  506. right and that's that ambition popping

  507. up its head

  508. again the Theologian uh John Howard

  509. Yoder wrote that people who bear crosses

  510. are working with the grain of the

  511. universe and he's so

  512. right at the heart of our universe our

  513. Cosmos is love and not an abstract ract

  514. mushy kind of love a generic love at the

  515. heart of reality is the love of a

  516. crucified God a God who gave himself so

  517. that we might be

  518. redeemed people who bear crosses are

  519. going with the grain of the universe but

  520. those who are selfish who are irritable

  521. who are resentful who are ambitious

  522. they're fighting with the very fabric of

  523. reality following the crucified God is

  524. the only way to

  525. life that is our

  526. glory and that's what lent is all

  527. about through fasting and prayer and

  528. almsgiving we deny ourselves we take up

  529. our cross and we follow Jesus we

  530. reconnect to the very ground of reality

  531. the way of Glory the way of life and we

  532. allow the Holy Spirit to change us to

  533. bear fruit in us so that we can

  534. experience true Resurrection not just in

  535. the life to come but in this life

  536. today the way of the Cross means putting

  537. to death everything in our lives that

  538. distracts us from following Jesus

  539. sacrificing the false glories of this

  540. world sacrificing our own Ambitions we

  541. must nail them to the Cross so that we
